  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Shine Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  3. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community. And as we follow Jesus together,

  5. we become convinced that there's no one so good. They don't need God's grace.

  6. And no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  7. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection.

  8. And last week, we took a look at the importance, in fact, more than the importance, the necessity of childlike faith,

  9. the necessity of acknowledging that we have nothing to offer to God, and all we can do is receive.

  10. This week, we're going to continue that theme with one very specific application of Jesus talking about the issue, the challenge, the danger of money.

  11. Money is one of those things that falls into the category of not bad, just dangerous.

  12. In fact, in many ways, money is good. It's a blessing.

  13. There was great wealth in the Garden of Eden when God created Adam and Eve,

  14. and we look forward to the new heavens and the new earth when there will also be great wealth.

  15. And so money is not bad in and of itself. It just presents unique temptations and challenges.

  16. And so it's with that we're going to dive right in.

  17. As we come to this passage in Mark chapter 10, I'm going to tell you three things.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  18. First of all, about the love of money. Second of all, the danger of money.

  19. And third, the new heart. That's the love of money, the danger of money, and the new heart.

  20. With that, I invite you to turn with me to God's Word.

  21. You can turn on your phone. You can turn in your Bible.

  22. You can turn in your worship guide. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  23. In Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5, tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  24. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  25. And so that's why we read now Mark chapter 10, starting at verse 17.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  26. And as He was setting out on His journey, a man ran up and knelt before Him and asked Him,

  27. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?

  28. And Jesus said to him, Why do you call me good?

  29. No one is good except God alone.

  30. You know the commandments. Do not murder. Do not commit adultery.

  31. Do not steal. Do not bear false witness. Do not defraud.

  32. Honor your father and mother.

  33. Verse 20.

  34. And He said to Him, Teacher, all these I have kept from my youth.

  35. And Jesus, looking at Him, loved Him and said to Him, You lack one thing.

  36. Go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.

  37. And come, follow Me.

  38. Disheartened by the saying, He went away sorrowful, for He had great possessions.

  39. And Jesus looked around and said to His disciples,

  40. How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God.

  41. And the disciples were amazed at His words.

  42. But Jesus said to them again, Children, how difficult it is to enter the kingdom of God.

  43. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.

  44. Verse 26.

  45. And they were exceedingly astonished and said to Him, Then who can be saved?

  46. Jesus looked at them and said, With man it is impossible, but not with God.

  47. For all things are possible with God.

  48. Peter began to say to Him, See, we have left everything and followed you.

  49. Verse 29.

  50. Jesus said, Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands for My sake and for the gospel,

  51. who will not receive a hundredfold now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands,

  52. with persecutions and in the age to come eternal life.

  53. But many who are first will be last and the last will be first.

  54. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  55. Our Father in heaven, we come to you this morning confessing that we need to be like little children to receive your instruction.

  56. And so we ask that you would help us.

  57. We know that we can't do it alone.

  58. That all by ourselves, we are incapable of hearing and understanding what it is you have to say to us.

  59. And so we ask that you would send your Holy Spirit to be with us.

  60. That you would soften our hearts.

  61. That you'd open up our minds.

  62. That you would be at work this morning.

  63. So that we would be able to hear and receive and obey your words.

  64. We thank you most of all that you don't come to us as simply a moral instructor.

  65. But you come to us as a man who lived and walked among us as Jesus.

  66. Full of beauty and glory and holiness and truth.

  67. We ask that you would show us him and that we would be changed as a result.

  68. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  69. Amen.

  70. The last time we saw Jesus, he was in the midst of taking these children up in his arms and blessing them despite the protests of his disciples.

  71. But the time has come now for Jesus to pack up and move on to his next adventure.

  72. You might think of this as a scene at the end of a lecture or an event and the speaker is trying to make his way out.

  73. He has somewhere else he needs to be.

  74. But you have an urgent and pressing question.

  75. And so you rush in on him to catch him before it is too late.

  76. Because what you have to ask is so incredibly important.

  77. That's what happens with this man here.

  78. He runs up to Jesus to block him before Jesus is able to escape to the next event because his question is so pressing.

  79. And thankfully he's able to catch Jesus here just in the nick of time.

  80. We understand why his question is pressing because he wants to know of all things,

  81. how is it that he can inherit eternal life?

  82. And in that he addresses Jesus as this good teacher.

  83. Jesus' answer here should surprise us because Jesus seems to correct him.

  84. He says, why are you calling me a good teacher?

  85. Only God is good.

  86. And we should be surprised by this because we saw in Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  87. Peter's confession that Jesus is the Christ.

  88. That Jesus is actually God.

  89. And so why is Jesus seeming to misdirect this man here?

  90. It should seem to us it would be the most normal expectation for Jesus to accept this.

  91. Yes, I am divine.

  92. You recognize me for who I am.

  93. Of course, I should be called good.

  94. Why does Jesus act as if he's not God?

  95. What we have to understand here is that Jesus is playing into this man's assumption.

  96. This rich ruler does not see or know that Jesus is divine.

  97. He sees Jesus as only human.

  98. And so what Jesus is doing in this passage is instead of correcting him,

  99. he decides to play along with this man's perspective.

  100. Jesus is saying, oh, you think that I'm merely a good teacher.

  101. You think that I am just another rabbi.

  102. Okay, let's roll with that and see where it takes us.

  103. Let's operate on that assumption and see what happens.

  104. Well, if I am a mere human, if I am just a rabbi, if I'm just a teacher,

  105. good, can't and doesn't apply to me.

  106. Because no human can truly be called good.

  107. And in that answer, Jesus has already indirectly cut out the legs from underneath this man's question.

  108. What does he ask?

  109. What must I do, right?

  110. How can I be good enough?

  111. And Jesus is poking him here.

  112. No one is good.

  113. You think I'm just a human.

  114. Well, then you have overestimated me.

  115. This phrase here that he asks him, what must I do?

  116. Verse 17, it is the opposite of what we saw last week,

  117. that we must receive the kingdom as children.

  118. But Jesus decides he's going to keep playing this game out with this man.

  119. And so he says, okay, let's continue to unfold this, unroll this blanket and see what happens.

  120. Verse 19, what about the moral law?

  121. What about the Ten Commandments?

  122. How are you doing with your performance in your life?

  123. This man, missing the fact that Jesus has already corrected him,

  124. continues to take the bait and says,

  125. yes, I can make this a matter of moral performance.

  126. If that's the bar that needs to be set, I have met it and exceeded it.

  127. I have done it.

  128. I have kept all of these things from my youth.

  129. And so he misses the deeper point that Jesus is driving at,

  130. the deeper issue of the human heart,

  131. the deeper issue of love for God.

  132. Has this man kept the law?

  133. Well, no, not in the way Jesus is going to go on and define it in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  134. In Mark chapter 12, someone's going to ask him what the greatest commandment is.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  135. And Jesus' response is that the sum of the law is love for God and love for others.

  136. And so Jesus is setting this man up to suddenly crush his understanding of himself

  137. by helping him understand you don't love God.

  138. You think that you have kept the law, but you are so incredibly far away.

  139. You love and trust and worship something much more than God himself.

  140. And that's what he sets him up for in verse 21.

  141. Looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him,

  142. you lack one thing.

  143. Go sell all that you have and give to the poor,

  144. and you will have treasure in heaven and come follow me.

  145. Jesus brings down the hammer on this man.

  146. Not to crush him,

  147. but we're told explicitly because he loved him.

  148. You're almost there.

  149. There's just one more thing you need to do.

  150. Give up all your money.

  151. Jesus is asking him,

  152. where is your true heart?

  153. What is it that you actually love and worship?

  154. What is your ultimate treasure?

  155. Disheartened by the saying,

  156. he went away sorrowful,

  157. for he had great possessions.

  158. Jesus is telling him this,

  159. you may be generally morally good and upright,

  160. but your trust and your hope and your love is not in me.

  161. It is in money.

  162. You do not love the Lord your God with all your heart.

  163. One pastor points out that this word here in verse 22,

  164. disheartened,

  165. that is used to describe this man

  166. is the same word that we're going to see in Mark chapter 14

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  167. used of Jesus when he's facing separation from God the Father

  168. as he looks to the potential

  169. and the reality of heading towards the cross.

  170. In other words,

  171. what this man feels about money

  172. is what Jesus feels about God the Father.

  173. That is how rapt and enamored he is with his possessions.

  174. He was good at external moral commands

  175. and he loved money more than God.

  176. This man loved money most of all.

  177. And so Jesus uses this as an object lesson for his disciples

  178. to help them understand the danger of wealth.

  179. It's right after this episode that he begins to teach them.

  180. Verse 23,

  181. he looks at his disciples and said,

  182. how difficult it will be for those who have wealth

  183. to enter the kingdom of God.

  184. And then we find out verse 25,

  185. it is not simply difficult.

  186. Verse 27,

  187. it is impossible.

  188. Jesus uses this illustration of the camel,

  189. which is the largest animal,

  190. and the thread,

  191. the eye of a needle,

  192. the smallest opening,

  193. and says,

  194. for a rich person to enter heaven,

  195. it is like taking the largest animal

  196. that you have as a frame of reference

  197. and putting it through the smallest opening.

  198. Now,

  199. there have been attempts throughout the centuries

  200. to explain away this passage

  201. and to say,

  202. well,

  203. the eye of the needle

  204. maybe was referring to this gate in Jerusalem

  205. that was narrow,

  206. but it wasn't too narrow.

  207. And so if you unpack the camel,

  208. then maybe you'd be able to make it through.

  209. And that's not what Jesus is saying.

  210. We use Jesus' words here

  211. to interpret his meaning.

  212. Verse 27,

  213. he tells us,

  214. it is impossible.

  215. He is giving them an image

  216. that is meant to be so extreme

  217. that there's no way of wiggling out of it.

  218. If you have money,

  219. if you're wealthy,

  220. you can't enter the kingdom,

  221. at least on first appearance.

  222. With man,

  223. it is impossible.

  224. With God,

  225. all things are possible.

  226. Money,

  227. outside of God's intervention

  228. and work in our hearts

  229. will keep us away from his kingdom.

  230. Why?

  231. There's two reasons.

  232. One,

  233. money pretends to be God.

  234. And money tempts us

  235. to believe that we are God.

  236. Money pretends to be God

  237. and money tempts us

  238. to believe that we are God.

  239. I have some examples for you

  240. on the back of your worship guide.

  241. There's a book called

  242. Far From the Tree

  243. that studies,

  244. among many things,

  245. children with profound disabilities.

  246. And the author makes this observation

  247. that people of higher socioeconomic status

  248. tend towards perfectionism

  249. and have a harder time

  250. living with perceived defects.

  251. One French study said,

  252. baldly,

  253. the lower classes

  254. show a higher tolerance

  255. for severely handicapped children.

  256. In other words,

  257. rich people

  258. can't handle imperfection.

  259. Why?

  260. Because money

  261. has convinced them

  262. that they are all powerful.

  263. there is nothing

  264. for which they cannot

  265. simply write a check.

  266. And so,

  267. they are unprepared

  268. to face

  269. the brokenness

  270. of this world.

  271. They believe

  272. that they are God

  273. because of their money,

  274. their experience

  275. in this life.

  276. Everything has been easy.

  277. There's been no challenge.

  278. They're not able

  279. to buy their way out of

  280. or hire their way into.

  281. And so,

  282. when they hit up

  283. against imperfection

  284. that they cannot solve,

  285. they do not know

  286. what to do.

  287. Money

  288. causes us

  289. to believe

  290. that we are

  291. like God.

  292. In an article

  293. about rich politicians,

  294. we're told this,

  295. a mounting body

  296. of research

  297. is showing

  298. wealth can actually

  299. change how we think

  300. and behave

  301. and not for the better.

  302. Rich people

  303. have a harder time

  304. connecting with others,

  305. showing less empathy

  306. to the extent

  307. of dehumanizing

  308. those who are

  309. different from them.

  310. They are less charitable

  311. and generous.

  312. They are less likely

  313. to help someone

  314. in trouble.

  315. And they are more likely

  316. to defend

  317. an unfair status quo.

  318. These aren't

  319. just inherited traits

  320. but developed ones.

  321. Money,

  322. in other words,

  323. changes

  324. who you are.

  325. are.

  326. The researchers

  327. then go on

  328. to say

  329. they believe

  330. this has to do

  331. with the fact

  332. of a few things.

  333. First of all,

  334. money tends

  335. to make people

  336. think that they're

  337. special and different.

  338. Somehow they're set

  339. apart from other people.

  340. They don't have

  341. to be bothered

  342. by what bothers

  343. normal everyday folks.

  344. The other reality

  345. is that money

  346. allows them

  347. to disconnect

  348. from other people.

  349. The more money

  350. you have,

  351. the less dependent

  352. you are.

  353. You don't need

  354. to ask your neighbor

  355. or friend

  356. for help

  357. if you're simply

  358. able to pay

  359. to get things done.

  360. Which makes us

  361. less empathetic

  362. and connected

  363. to those

  364. around us.

  365. The point

  366. of all of those

  367. things is this.

  368. Money

  369. allows us

  370. to pretend

  371. we aren't

  372. children.

  373. money gets

  374. in the way

  375. of the childlike

  376. posture we talked

  377. about last week.

  378. And remember,

  379. Jesus didn't say

  380. being like a child

  381. is helpful.

  382. He said being

  383. like a child

  384. is necessary.

  385. It is a requirement.

  386. Need

  387. is the price

  388. of admission.

  389. And wealth

  390. deceives us

  391. into believing

  392. we have

  393. no need.

  394. Wealth

  395. is an obstacle

  396. to childlike

  397. faith.

  398. Wealth

  399. is dangerous

  400. because

  401. it is an

  402. obstacle

  403. to childlike

  404. faith.

  405. What is it

  406. that children

  407. don't have?

  408. Many things.

  409. One of them

  410. is money

  411. and resources.

  412. Trusting

  413. in riches

  414. is the

  415. opposite

  416. of trusting

  417. in God.

  418. Trusting

  419. in money

  420. is the

  421. opposite

  422. of having

  423. childlike

  424. faith.

  425. And so

  426. we think

  427. in this

  428. way.

  429. You know

  430. what?

  431. Jesus

  432. is kind

  433. of volatile.

  434. You know?

  435. But money

  436. is safe

  437. and secure.

  438. And the

  439. more I have

  440. of it,

  441. the more

  442. I've piled

  443. up and

  444. saved,

  445. the safer

  446. I am.

  447. That's

  448. something I

  449. can really

  450. rely on.

  451. And so

  452. I don't

  453. have to

  454. be like

  455. a child.

  456. I don't

  457. have to

  458. recognize

  459. and embrace

  460. helplessness.

  461. It's a

  462. natural

  463. posture

  464. for a

  465. child to

  466. believe

  467. that her

  468. parents are

  469. going to

  470. provide for

  471. her.

  472. And so

  473. there's

  474. something

  475. deeply

  476. wrong.

  477. I want

  478. you to

  479. imagine

  480. for a

  481. second

  482. that

  483. you're

  484. a

  485. parent

  486. and

  487. you

  488. discover

  489. that

  490. your

  491. son

  492. is

  493. hoarding

  494. money

  495. in this

  496. mason

  497. jar

  498. in the

  499. back

  500. of

  501. his

  502. closet.

  503. Right?

  504. And so

  505. you ask

  506. him,

  507. what is

  508. this

  509. money

  510. for?

  511. Why

  512. do you

  513. have

  514. this

  515. jar

  516. filled

  517. with

  518. quarters

  519. and dollar

  520. bills?

  521. And your

  522. son says

  523. to you,

  524. well,

  525. I'm afraid

  526. that there's

  527. going to

  528. come a

  529. time when

  530. you're not

  531. going to

  532. be able

  533. to buy

  534. food for

  535. us.

  536. So I've

  537. stored a

  538. little

  539. something

  540. away.

  541. And what

  542. is your

  543. response as

  544. a

  545. parent?

  546. Heartbroken,

  547. right?

  548. And

  549. there's a

  550. ridiculousness

  551. to it

  552. that this

  553. child thinks

  554. they can

  555. store enough

  556. away to

  557. care for

  558. the family.

  559. There's a

  560. sadness,

  561. right?

  562. You want

  563. something

  564. better for

  565. that child.

  566. brothers and

  567. sisters,

  568. the same

  569. is true

  570. with us

  571. and our

  572. heavenly

  573. father.

  574. It is

  575. ridiculous

  576. for us

  577. to think

  578. that it

  579. is our

  580. job

  581. ultimately

  582. to provide

  583. for

  584. ourselves.

  585. It is

  586. laughable

  587. that we

  588. can store

  589. away enough

  590. money to

  591. protect

  592. ourselves.

  593. there's

  594. something

  595. sad for

  596. you,

  597. right?

  598. As a

  599. parent,

  600. you want

  601. something

  602. better for

  603. that child.

  604. You know

  605. that children

  606. are not

  607. meant to

  608. stash

  609. away money

  610. in the

  611. back of

  612. their

  613. closets

  614. thinking

  615. that you're

  616. going to

  617. run out

  618. of an

  619. ability

  620. to feed

  621. them or

  622. provide

  623. for them.

  624. And so

  625. there's a

  626. joy and

  627. a relief

  628. that comes

  629. for that

  630. son or

  631. that daughter

  632. in trusting

  633. that their

  634. parents are

  635. going to

  636. make sure

  637. that they

  638. have

  639. enough.

  640. The same

  641. is true

  642. for us.

  643. as tempting

  644. as money

  645. is,

  646. as alluring

  647. as wealth

  648. presents itself

  649. to be,

  650. God wants

  651. something

  652. better for

  653. you.

  654. God wants

  655. you to

  656. have the

  657. joy and

  658. relief and

  659. trust that

  660. comes from

  661. knowing that

  662. he will

  663. provide.

  664. He wants

  665. us to be

  666. able to

  667. pray and

  668. believe,

  669. give us

  670. this day

  671. our daily

  672. bread.

  673. wealth is

  674. such a

  675. challenge

  676. and such

  677. a threat.

  678. And by

  679. the way,

  680. whether you

  681. think so

  682. or not,

  683. if you

  684. live in

  685. America

  686. in 2022,

  687. you're

  688. basically in

  689. the top

  690. 1% of

  691. the world

  692. throughout

  693. history.

  694. In other

  695. words,

  696. you're

  697. wealthy,

  698. whether you

  699. want to

  700. admit it

  701. or not.

  702. what are

  703. we supposed

  704. to do

  705. if wealth

  706. is the

  707. opposite

  708. of

  709. childlike

  710. faith?

  711. Well,

  712. Jesus gives

  713. us an

  714. answer here.

  715. Verse 21,

  716. he tells

  717. this man,

  718. go sell

  719. all that

  720. you have

  721. and give

  722. to the

  723. poor and

  724. you will

  725. have

  726. treasure

  727. in heaven

  728. and come

  729. follow me.

  730. What's the

  731. solution for

  732. that child

  733. with the

  734. mason jar

  735. in the

  736. back of

  737. his

  738. closet?

  739. The

  740. solution is

  741. to get

  742. rid of

  743. the

  744. mason jar.

  745. What is

  746. the solution

  747. for making

  748. wealth

  749. into a

  750. god?

  751. The

  752. solution

  753. is to

  754. get rid

  755. of it.

  756. Now,

  757. don't hear

  758. what I'm

  759. not saying.

  760. Jesus'

  761. command is

  762. not for

  763. every person

  764. to give

  765. all their

  766. money away.

  767. This man

  768. receives a

  769. specific

  770. command from

  771. Jesus because

  772. money is

  773. such an

  774. idol for

  775. him.

  776. We talked

  777. earlier about

  778. the fact

  779. that money

  780. for him

  781. is like

  782. God the

  783. father to

  784. Jesus.

  785. He's so

  786. wrapped around,

  787. it is so

  788. powerful in

  789. his life that

  790. the only way

  791. he's going to

  792. be able to

  793. receive and

  794. embrace the

  795. kingdom is

  796. to give it

  797. all away.

  798. Jesus does

  799. not give that

  800. same command

  801. to everyone

  802. he meets in

  803. the gospels.

  804. Luke 19,

  805. for example,

  806. Zacchaeus,

  807. remember,

  808. is defrauding

  809. people.

  810. Zacchaeus gives

  811. a tremendous

  812. amount of his

  813. money away.

  814. We don't hear

  815. that he gives

  816. all of it

  817. away.

  818. If we take

  819. the teaching

  820. of the

  821. Bible from

  822. Genesis to

  823. Revelation,

  824. we see there

  825. are three

  826. things we're

  827. supposed to

  828. do with

  829. money.

  830. We're

  831. supposed to

  832. give it,

  833. we're

  834. supposed to

  835. save it,

  836. and we're

  837. supposed to

  838. spend it

  839. in that

  840. order.

  841. And so

  842. Jesus'

  843. command for

  844. you this

  845. morning is

  846. not that you

  847. would give

  848. all of your

  849. money away to

  850. the poor and

  851. have nothing

  852. left,

  853. but the

  854. way to

  855. break the

  856. power and

  857. allure of

  858. money is

  859. to get

  860. rid of

  861. it.

  862. Remember

  863. what Scott

  864. read earlier

  865. this morning,

  866. we know

  867. that money

  868. is a

  869. problem for

  870. us if we

  871. are unable

  872. to give

  873. large amounts

  874. of it away.

  875. We know

  876. that money

  877. has become

  878. a God

  879. when we

  880. are unable

  881. to give

  882. large amounts

  883. of it away.

  884. money.

  885. And if

  886. that sounds

  887. radical,

  888. that simply

  889. reveals how

  890. powerful and

  891. consuming

  892. money truly

  893. is.

  894. If that

  895. sounds radical,

  896. it simply

  897. reveals how

  898. powerful and

  899. consuming

  900. money truly

  901. is.

  902. And so

  903. that's why

  904. Jesus tells

  905. us the truth

  906. here,

  907. verses 26

  908. and 27,

  909. it is

  910. impossible.

  911. with man

  912. it is

  913. impossible,

  914. with not

  915. with God,

  916. for all

  917. things are

  918. possible

  919. with God.

  920. The command

  921. for this

  922. man is not

  923. necessarily the

  924. command for

  925. us,

  926. but what

  927. should be

  928. true of us

  929. is this,

  930. Christians'

  931. fists are

  932. not tightly

  933. grasped

  934. around

  935. money.

  936. We're able

  937. to let it

  938. go.

  939. when we

  940. let it

  941. go,

  942. the spell

  943. that money

  944. has over

  945. us breaks.

  946. When we're

  947. able to

  948. let it

  949. go,

  950. we recognize

  951. it's not

  952. our God.

  953. When we

  954. let it go,

  955. we are

  956. saying,

  957. Jesus,

  958. I trust

  959. you enough

  960. that you're

  961. going to

  962. provide for

  963. me tomorrow.

  964. I am

  965. able to

  966. receive from

  967. you my

  968. daily bread.

  969. God.

  970. If we

  971. cannot let

  972. money go,

  973. it proves

  974. we don't

  975. trust God.

  976. It's that

  977. simple.

  978. If we

  979. cannot let

  980. money go,

  981. it proves

  982. we do

  983. not trust

  984. God.

  985. God.

  986. hard task.

  987. How do

  988. we do

  989. it?

  990. I've

  991. told you

  992. before about

  993. this man

  994. named Thomas

  995. Chalmers,

  996. who is a

  997. Scottish

  998. preacher in

  999. the 19th

  1000. century,

  1001. and he

  1002. preached this

  1003. famous sermon

  1004. on 1 John 2

  1005. called the

  1006. expulsive

  1007. power of a

  1008. new affection.

  1009. He says

  1010. if you

  1011. want to

  1012. get rid

  1013. of one

  1014. thing,

  1015. you must

  1016. replace it

  1017. with another

  1018. thing.

  1019. Our hearts

  1020. are this

  1021. affection vacuum

  1022. that we

  1023. have to

  1024. love

  1025. something.

  1026. We can't

  1027. get rid

  1028. of one

  1029. love without

  1030. replacing it

  1031. with another.

  1032. He gives

  1033. this illustration

  1034. of a house

  1035. where a

  1036. strong man

  1037. lives.

  1038. If you

  1039. want to

  1040. get rid

  1041. of that

  1042. strong man,

  1043. there's only

  1044. one way.

  1045. You have

  1046. to find

  1047. a stronger

  1048. man to

  1049. kick him

  1050. out.

  1051. If you

  1052. want to

  1053. love one

  1054. thing less,

  1055. you must

  1056. find another

  1057. love that

  1058. is even

  1059. greater,

  1060. even more

  1061. powerful.

  1062. He goes

  1063. on to

  1064. talk about

  1065. the love

  1066. of riches

  1067. in this

  1068. sermon,

  1069. and he

  1070. says if

  1071. you want

  1072. to tell

  1073. a man

  1074. to stop

  1075. loving

  1076. money,

  1077. it's the

  1078. same as

  1079. telling him

  1080. to burn

  1081. his house

  1082. down.

  1083. It makes

  1084. no sense.

  1085. And so

  1086. what he's

  1087. saying is

  1088. basically

  1089. everything

  1090. that I've

  1091. told you

  1092. this morning

  1093. is worthless.

  1094. it doesn't

  1095. matter.

  1096. You can

  1097. tell someone

  1098. over and

  1099. over again

  1100. that they

  1101. need to

  1102. give up

  1103. wealth,

  1104. but no

  1105. one is

  1106. going to

  1107. burn their

  1108. own house

  1109. down,

  1110. right?

  1111. Except

  1112. unless,

  1113. Chalmers says,

  1114. he knows

  1115. that when he

  1116. burns it

  1117. down,

  1118. he's going

  1119. to have

  1120. a new

  1121. house

  1122. ten times

  1123. as great.

  1124. no man

  1125. in his

  1126. right mind

  1127. will burn

  1128. his house

  1129. down unless

  1130. he knows

  1131. when he

  1132. does,

  1133. he will

  1134. receive one

  1135. ten times

  1136. as valuable.

  1137. Jesus

  1138. knows the

  1139. human heart

  1140. better than

  1141. anyone else,

  1142. and that's

  1143. exactly what

  1144. he does

  1145. here in

  1146. this

  1147. passage.

  1148. church.

  1149. He tells

  1150. them,

  1151. there is

  1152. something

  1153. ten times

  1154. as valuable

  1155. as money.

  1156. In fact,

  1157. more than

  1158. ten times

  1159. as valuable.

  1160. Jesus is

  1161. the strong

  1162. man that

  1163. is more

  1164. powerful than

  1165. the love

  1166. of money.

  1167. And he

  1168. presents them

  1169. with this

  1170. vision here

  1171. in verses

  1172. 29-31.

  1173. Peter,

  1174. looking for

  1175. reassurance

  1176. here,

  1177. says,

  1178. see,

  1179. we've left

  1180. everything

  1181. and followed

  1182. you.

  1183. By the way,

  1184. people pointed

  1185. out,

  1186. Peter does

  1187. not say,

  1188. we've sold

  1189. everything

  1190. and followed

  1191. you.

  1192. Again,

  1193. Jesus'

  1194. command is

  1195. not for

  1196. every

  1197. Christian

  1198. to divest

  1199. themselves

  1200. of all

  1201. resources.

  1202. Jesus

  1203. gives him

  1204. this assurance.

  1205. Truly I

  1206. say to

  1207. you,

  1208. there is

  1209. no one

  1210. who has

  1211. left

  1212. house or

  1213. brothers or

  1214. sisters or

  1215. mother or

  1216. father or

  1217. children or

  1218. lands for

  1219. my sake and

  1220. for the gospel

  1221. who will not

  1222. receive a

  1223. hundredfold now

  1224. in this time

  1225. houses and

  1226. brothers and

  1227. sisters and

  1228. mother and

  1229. children and

  1230. lands with

  1231. persecutions and

  1232. in the age to

  1233. come eternal

  1234. life.

  1235. Jesus is saying

  1236. there is

  1237. something not

  1238. ten times

  1239. greater, a

  1240. hundredfold

  1241. greater.

  1242. there are

  1243. things that

  1244. wealth offers

  1245. you that it

  1246. cannot deliver.

  1247. It cannot

  1248. provide

  1249. satisfaction and

  1250. joy and

  1251. significance.

  1252. You know

  1253. what can?

  1254. God and

  1255. his people.

  1256. The brothers

  1257. and sisters that

  1258. he is promising

  1259. them here in

  1260. the present are

  1261. the people that

  1262. you can look

  1263. around and see

  1264. here this

  1265. morning.

  1266. when he

  1267. talks about all

  1268. the great things

  1269. that he has for

  1270. his people, he's

  1271. also presenting

  1272. them the vision of

1273. what is to come in

  1274. his heavenly

  1275. kingdom.

  1276. Money, brothers and

  1277. sisters, cannot

  1278. deliver on its

  1279. promises.

  1280. It can arouse and

  1281. entice.

  1282. It cannot

  1283. fulfill.

  1284. Do you want

  1285. more of what

  1286. matters?

  1287. Do you want

  1288. more relationships

  1289. of significance?

  1290. Do you want

  1291. more things that

  1292. fill up the

  1293. emptiness of your

  1294. heart?

  1295. Jesus tells us

  1296. clearly what needs

  1297. to happen.

  1298. He says, follow

  1299. me.

  1300. Do you want

  1301. to have a

  1302. future?

  1303. Jesus says, the

  1304. future is with

  1305. me, not in

  1306. your investment

  1307. accounts.

  1308. I am your

  1309. security.

  1310. And so what he

  1311. tells this man is

  1312. true of us as

  1313. well.

  1314. No one is

  1315. good.

  1316. God, everyone

  1317. needs, verse 27,

  1318. Jesus to do the

  1319. impossible.

  1320. Everyone needs a

  1321. change, a radical,

  1322. miraculous change of

  1323. heart so that we

  1324. love what is truly

  1325. good and valuable and

  1326. precious and not

  1327. just what appears to

  1328. be.

  1329. This man does not

  1330. understand that he is

  1331. not simply spiritually

  1332. bankrupt, but he is

  1333. also in debt.

  1334. He needs Jesus'

  1335. divine intervention

  1336. just like us.

1337. And so we have not

  1338. just Jesus' promise of

1339. what is to come in the

  1340. future, but we have

1341. Jesus as our hope that

  1342. what is impossible with

  1343. man is possible with

  1344. God.

1345. That when Jesus died on

  1346. the cross for us,

  1347. taking the punishment

  1348. that we deserve, when

  1349. he lived the perfect

  1350. life doing what we

1351. should have done, he is

1352. able then to come and

  1353. change our hearts and

1354. lives and minds so that

  1355. we love what is

  1356. actually valuable.

1357. And so we confess with

  1358. this man, or with

1359. Jesus here, that we are

  1360. not good.

  1361. God alone is good.

1362. We need him to change

  1363. our hearts and our

  1364. loves and our

  1365. affections.

1366. In the year 79 AD, there

  1367. was a volcano that

  1368. erupted on Mount

  1369. Vesuvius on the

  1370. western coast of

  1371. Italy, destroying the

  1372. ancient city of

  1373. Pompeii, which was

  1374. terrible for the

  1375. residents of Pompeii and

  1376. was wonderful for

  1377. archaeologists because the

  1378. ash preserved everything

1379. that was in that city.

1380. And so it buried what

  1381. became an archaeologist's

  1382. dream.

  1383. In January of 1911,

  1384. there was a California

  1385. newspaper that

  1386. announced a recent

  1387. discovery that

  1388. archaeologists have

  1389. made of a woman's

  1390. petrified body as she

  1391. was fleeing from the

  1392. city trying to escape

  1393. the volcano.

1394. With her, she had what

  1395. was most valuable, and

  1396. so the newspaper report

1397. tells us both of her

  1398. hands were full of

  1399. jewels.

  1400. Evidently, the woman

  1401. was fleeing from the

  1402. eruption that overwhelmed

  1403. Pompeii, carrying her

  1404. valuables and was

  1405. buried.

  1406. The jewels are

  1407. excellently preserved.

  1408. They consist of

  1409. bracelets, necklaces,

  1410. rings, amulets studded

1411. with gems, and a pair of

  1412. earrings which are

  1413. probably unique.

1414. They may be the most

  1415. valuable specimens of

  1416. ancient jewelry ever

  1417. discovered.

  1418. Each earring contains

1419. 21 perfect pearls set in

1420. gold in imitation of a

  1421. bunch of grapes.

1422. She had the most valuable

  1423. specimens of ancient

  1424. jewelry ever discovered, and

  1425. they were worthless.

  1426. Ultimately, her jewels were

  1427. of no use.

  1428. Mark chapter 10, verse 15,

    Mark 10:15

1429. truly I say to you, whoever

1430. does not receive the kingdom

1431. of God like a child shall not

  1432. enter it.

  1433. And verse 21, Jesus

1434. looking at him, loved him

1435. and said to him, you lack

  1436. one thing.

1437. Go sell all that you have

1438. and give to the poor and

1439. you will have treasure in

  1440. heaven.

  1441. And come, follow me.

  1442. Let's pray.

1443. Our Father in heaven, we

1444. thank you that you offer us

  1445. something so much more

  1446. precious and more valuable

1447. in the wealth and riches of

1448. this world, and yet we also

  1449. confess that we, without

1450. your help, love what cannot

  1451. deliver.

1452. And so we ask that you would

1453. change our hearts, that you

1454. would do what is impossible

1455. with man but possible with

  1456. you.

1457. That we would be willing to

1458. burn it down knowing there

1459. will be something ten times

1460. more valuable, the value of

  1461. you and your kingdom.

1462. We ask all these things in the

1463. mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  1464. Amen.

1465. I invite you to stand for our

  1466. closing hymn.

  1467. Amen.

  1468. Amen.
