  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  11. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  12. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection.

  13. And in the first half of the Gospel, we were asking this question of who is Jesus,

  14. and that reached its climax in many ways in the middle of chapter 8

  15. when Peter finally recognizes that Jesus is the Christ.

  16. He is the one that they've been looking for for thousands of years.

  17. And now as we continue in the Gospel, they're following Jesus quite literally on His way to the cross,

  18. and so we're asking a different question, which is what does it look like to follow after Jesus?

  19. In the last few weeks as we've looked at Jesus' teaching,

  20. we've seen the way that the kingdom operates is very different than the way of the world.

  21. There is an upside-down quality to the cross,

  22. and yet the disciples are still functioning by worldly principles.

  23. And so we looked, first of all, at the worldly view of marriage and sex, which Jesus corrects.

  24. Then the worldly view of children, which Jesus turns upside down.

  25. Last week, the worldly view of money.

  26. Jesus isn't done yet, though, and so this week we're going to see Him address the topic of power, success, glory, and fame.

  27. And we'll see the approach of the Christian is very different from that of the world.

  28. And so I invite you to turn with me now to Mark chapter 10, starting at verse 32.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  29. You can turn in your Bible.

  30. You can turn in your worship guide.

  31. You can turn on your phone.

  32. Remember that no matter where you turn, this is God's Word.

  33. And Proverbs 30, verse 5, tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  34. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  35. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 32.

  36. And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them.

  37. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.

  38. And taking the twelve again, He began to tell them what was to happen to Him, saying,

  39. See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes.

  40. And they will condemn Him to death, and deliver Him over to the Gentiles.

  41. And they will mock Him, and spit on Him, and flog Him, and kill Him.

  42. And after three days He will rise.

  43. Verse 35.

  44. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Him and said to Him,

  45. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.

  46. And He said to them, What do you want me to do for you?

  47. And they said to Him, Grant us to sit one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory.

  48. Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking.

  49. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?

  50. And they said to Him, We are able.

  51. And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink, you will drink.

  52. And with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.

  53. But to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant.

  54. But it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

  55. Verse 41.

  56. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.

  57. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  58. Our Father in Heaven, we praise You again that we're here together this morning,

  59. and that You speak to us, to our hearts by Your Word.

  60. We confess that we have hungry hearts that love and run after many things.

  61. We ask that You'd be at work by Your Spirit, that we would love one thing, that we would love You.

  62. We ask this morning now, as we look at Your Word, that You would cast a spotlight on Jesus,

  63. that we would see His glory and His beauty and His holiness and His love,

  64. and that You would grow our love and affection for Him,

  65. our reverence and our awe for Him,

  66. that we would follow Him and love Him and obey Him.

  67. We ask all these things in His mighty name. Amen.

  68. If this passage feels familiar at all, if it feels like a deja vu from previous sections in the Gospel of Mark,

  69. that's because, in fact, it is.

  70. Mark is famous for having three different passion predictions,

  71. three different places where Jesus tries to teach His disciples about what is to come later in His ministry,

  72. and this is the final of the three.

  73. The disappointing thing is that it was a repetition not just in His prediction,

  74. but in the failed response, the inappropriate response of His disciples.

  75. Remember in chapter 8, Jesus first told them about His future,

  76. and it was Peter who rebuked Him,

  77. and Jesus had to tell him,

  78. Get behind me, Satan,

  79. because Peter did not understand the true nature of Jesus' purpose and mission.

  80. But then it happens again in the next chapter.

  81. In chapter 9, Jesus tells them again that the Son of Man is going to suffer and die,

  82. and remember at that point, they are afraid to ask any more,

  83. so they instead choose the very smart strategy of immediately arguing amongst themselves about who is the greatest.

  84. It's at that point, you remember that Jesus tells them,

  85. Mark chapter 9, verse 35,

    Mark 9:35

  86. If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.

  87. And so here, as we come to chapter 10,

  88. we would expect the disciples would have learned something.

  89. They would have made some improvement from chapter 9.

  90. They would have understood that glory is not what they should be chasing after.

  91. Instead, here we see that they have learned something.

  92. It's just the wrong thing.

  93. There's a similar response here.

  94. They long for greatness, but James and John have finally gotten their act together.

  95. They have a better plan and strategy than they had before.

  96. Last time, all of them were arguing about who would be the greatest.

  97. They decide this time they're going to take matters into their own hands.

  98. The rest of the disciples are chumps.

  99. They don't understand what actually needs to happen,

  100. which is to make the grab for power that will set them above everyone else.

  101. They don't need to argue with anyone.

  102. They can skip all of that and take matters into their own hands

  103. and ensure that they are actually the greatest,

  104. because they're going to sit next to Jesus.

  105. When I was growing up, I'm the youngest of three sons,

  106. and so my brothers and I came up with this brilliant concept,

  107. which we called the magic number.

  108. The magic number was the number three, because there was three of us.

  109. And so this especially applied to desserts that were left in the house.

  110. If there were three pieces of cake left,

  111. we would tell our parents,

  112. look, it's the magic number.

  113. The conclusion is obvious.

  114. What must you do?

  115. You must make sure each of your three sons gets a piece of cake.

  116. And of course, I think our parents realized with some amusement

  117. that it was probably better for our metabolism than for theirs.

  118. And so this proved to often be a winning strategy.

  119. We just needed to point out there's only three things left.

  120. You have three sons.

  121. Do I need to help you figure this out even more?

  122. Here we have the same thing going on.

  123. There's a magic number.

  124. There's James and John.

  125. There's two of them.

  126. They also are brothers.

  127. And guess how many sides Jesus has?

  128. Jesus has two, a left side and a right side.

  129. So we don't have to compete against each other as brothers.

  130. Instead, we know there's the exact number that we need.

  131. We'll leave it up to Jesus to decide who's going to be on the right side

  132. so we do not have to compete.

  133. Either way, we're both going to get great seats.

  134. And yet the irony is thick here because we see verse 32,

  135. Jesus is on the way to Jerusalem.

  136. He is literally walking towards the cross.

  137. He is literally telling them about his suffering.

  138. And what is it that James and John have on their mind?

  139. We have stock options with Jesus.

  140. We were smart enough to get in on the ground floor.

  141. We knew Jesus before it was cool.

  142. We know as he's heading towards Jerusalem,

  143. this is going to be his big moment.

  144. This is when he's going to do everything we know that the Christ is supposed to accomplish.

  145. He's going to become powerful and glorious.

  146. He's going to overthrow the Romans.

  147. And so before it's too late,

  148. we need to ensure that we cash in everything we have.

  149. Jesus is about to get really big.

  150. And we'll get big too.

  151. There's only two slots and there are 12 disciples.

  152. We need to make sure we're the ones who ask first.

  153. We made the smart move.

  154. We got in on the ground level.

  155. It has certainly earned us something.

  156. Finally, where dreams will come true.

  157. And at the same time, Jesus has been trying to tell them he is revealing more and more

  158. how bad it is going to get the level of suffering they will experience.

  159. They are obsessed with glory, but Jesus has just told them,

  160. verse 33, it's going to get really bad.

  161. He's going to face death.

  162. And it's not just that he's going to face death,

  163. but there are some Jews who are going to go so against the norms of God's people

  164. that they're going to hand over another Jew to the Gentiles of all people.

  165. And not only are they going to hand him over the Gentiles,

  166. those Gentiles, verse 34, are going to mock him, spit on him, whip him, and kill him.

  167. And if it couldn't get any worse for the disciples,

  168. remember how last week's passage ended, verse 31,

  169. the first will be last and the last first.

  170. In other words, it would be challenging for the disciples to look any more ridiculous

  171. and tone deaf than they look here.

  172. Brothers and sisters, we are also tempted by power and glory

  173. and forget how tone deaf and ridiculous we look.

  174. We want, when we speak to people, for their ears to perk up,

  175. for things to happen, for people to act and change and listen.

  176. We need or want others to know how strong and smart and fast

  177. and wealthy and beautiful we are.

  178. We want and need others to recognize the cars we drive,

  179. the toys that we have, the restaurants we can visit,

  180. the experiences we can afford.

  181. We want a more prestigious job,

  182. not because it's an opportunity for us to do more good for God in this world,

  183. so that we can prove something to ourselves and others.

  184. I'm finally worthy.

  185. I finally proved I have a right to exist in this world.

  186. This desire for greatness,

  187. it drives the desire and the need for affirmation on social media,

  188. for likes and comments.

  189. We want our kids to behave not because it's for their good,

  190. but so that other people would see that we're the parents

  191. who have it all together.

  192. And they would praise us and admire us and look up to us.

  193. And yet, our children can't be fooled,

  194. and they know the truth and resent it.

  195. We have the desperate insecurity that's revealed by name-dropping.

  196. We know someone who matters,

  197. and therefore, we must matter too.

  198. Because greatness is about others recognizing us,

  199. serving us, deferring to us.

  200. And yet, it's all so transparent, so easy to spot.

  201. We think we can hide from other people

  202. the things we wear on our sleeves.

  203. And so Jesus speaks into that mess here in verses 42 through 45

  204. when he tells them there's actually a different paradigm to operate by.

  205. You are looking to be like the Gentile rulers,

  206. verse 42,

  207. who receive all these great things,

  208. but in fact, the opposite is what you should be aiming for.

  209. Verse 43,

  210. whoever would be great among you must be your servant.

  211. You must change your entire way of thinking about yourself,

  212. your identity,

  213. an entirely new definition of greatness.

  214. You need to reorient your values and aspirations and ambition.

  215. And it's important to note here

  216. that Jesus is not giving some sort of leadership hack.

  217. Because what he says here is a sort of thing

  218. you might hear from all sorts of leadership gurus,

  219. whether they're Christians or not.

  220. But the worldly advice would go like this,

  221. a humble servant,

  222. that's the way you get into the record of great leaders.

  223. That's the way people will remember you and give you glory.

  224. And Jesus is saying here,

  225. no, this is something different.

  226. Getting into the book of great leaders and people is irrelevant.

  227. There's a completely different mental model paradigm

  228. for what is important in life.

  229. The world will tell you,

  230. become great by being humble.

  231. That's the trick.

  232. And Jesus says,

  233. becoming great in the eyes of the world isn't the goal.

  234. It's not the aim.

  235. Instead, it's to take on a different position.

  236. Verse 43,

  237. servant.

  238. Verse 44,

  239. slave.

  240. And so we see the same principle that we talked about

  241. when Jesus gave similar instruction in chapter 9,

  242. that there is this principle of the gospel

  243. that's opposed to the principle of the world.

  244. The principle of the world is that we push others down

  245. so that we can lift ourselves up.

  246. And Jesus comes and flips that and says,

  247. no,

  248. the gospel,

  249. we lift others up and push ourselves down.

  250. There's a different way,

  251. a different path for the Christian,

  252. and it's the way of Jesus.

  253. That we don't evaluate others

  254. based on how they advance our goals

  255. or meet our needs,

  256. based on what they can do for us.

  257. If we're concerned primarily about honor and status,

  258. then we will evaluate other people

  259. on how they relate to that.

  260. In fact,

  261. we stop the constant need,

  262. the drive for the approval

  263. and admiration of others,

  264. and instead we start exalting others

  265. and lifting them up,

  266. even when,

  267. especially when,

  268. it doesn't advance our personal goals

  269. or ambitions.

  270. In fact, how we treat

  271. those who have less power than us

  272. reveals the most about our character,

  273. whether we actually understand

  274. and follow Jesus.

  275. And it's more than simply acts of service.

  276. It is giving up entirely the obsession

  277. with personal glory and power and honor.

  278. Remember two weeks ago

  279. when the disciples tried to be great friends

  280. to Jesus by blocking the children

  281. who are coming to him.

  282. The reason they did that

  283. is because those children

  284. had nothing they could offer

  285. to advance Jesus' mission

  286. and his purpose.

  287. They had nothing to offer the world,

  288. and so therefore,

  289. they must have nothing to offer Jesus.

  290. Jesus interrupts them then

  291. and says,

  292. that's the point.

  293. I'm interested in those

  294. who know they have nothing to offer.

  295. That same idea,

  296. that same principle

  297. is reinforced here.

  298. Christians follow Jesus

  299. by offering things

  300. by offering things

  301. to those who have nothing to offer.

  302. We show whether we understand

  303. and follow Jesus

  304. by how we treat those on the margins.

  305. But the haunting question is for us,

  306. why is it so hard?

  307. Why is it that success and glory

  308. and power and fame

  309. are so alluring and attractive?

  310. When I was in college,

  311. I had a professor who had this sign

  312. in her office that said this,

  313. success is the best revenge.

  314. And I asked her one time about it,

  315. and she indicated,

  316. in broad terms with no details,

  317. that there had been a time

  318. where there were those

  319. who had hurt her and opposed her,

  320. and she had realized

  321. this was the way

  322. she was going to make it all right.

  323. Success is the best revenge

  324. seems like a great motivational line

  325. until you think about it

  326. and you realize

  327. how incredibly sad

  328. and bankrupt

  329. that line is.

  330. Because if success

  331. is the best form of revenge,

  332. it means that you are still

  333. controlled and dominated

  334. by the perceptions

  335. and beliefs

  336. of that person

  337. who hurt you.

  338. And it helps us understand

  339. why success

  340. is so attractive.

  341. all of us have

  342. hurts

  343. and wounds

  344. that we're trying to patch

  345. and heal

  346. and success

  347. seems like

  348. an incredibly attractive option

  349. to do that.

  350. Do you know

  351. the hurt

  352. of your own heart?

  353. Do you know

  354. the hunger

  355. of your own heart?

  356. Maybe the bullying

  357. that you experienced

  358. as a kid

  359. still travels with you

  360. and you believe

  361. that if you accomplish enough,

  362. you can make

  363. those words

  364. untrue.

  365. You can prove

  366. that you're somebody

  367. that you have worth.

  368. maybe you've come

  369. to the sobering

  370. realization

  371. that your spouse

  372. finds his work

  373. much more fascinating

  374. than you.

  375. But if your kids

  376. can just achieve enough,

  377. then somehow

  378. it will be all

  379. okay.

  380. maybe it's

  381. your father's

  382. yelling

  383. or perhaps

  384. more confusing

  385. his distance

  386. and his silence.

  387. It's not a coincidence

  388. that so many

  389. ambitious

  390. and powerful men

  391. have absent

  392. fathers.

  393. your body

  394. can go

  395. without food

  396. for a few days

  397. but the heart

  398. is always

  399. hungry.

  400. The heart

  401. never fasts.

  402. The heart

  403. always feeds

  404. on something.

  405. And so

  406. success

  407. and glory

  408. and power

  409. without addressing

  410. the deep

  411. issues

  412. and longings

  413. of our heart

  414. never ends

  415. well.

  416. there are

  417. many things

  418. that we want

  419. to happen

  420. at our church

  421. things that we

  422. want to grow

  423. and increase

  424. and those things

  425. will only be

  426. dangerous to us

  427. if we don't

  428. address our

  429. hearts

  430. first.

  431. And none of it

  432. matters if we

  433. don't get

  434. first things

  435. right.

  436. The matter

  437. of the heart

  438. Jesus knows

  439. greatness and

  440. success are

  441. like wealth

  442. they're very

  443. dangerous.

  444. They can

  445. and will

  446. shipwreck us

  447. outside of

  448. God's

  449. grace.

  450. In fact

  451. some people

  452. would say

  453. that success

  454. is more

  455. dangerous

  456. than failure.

  457. That success

  458. reveals our

  459. character

  460. as much

  461. if not

  462. more than

  463. the obstacles

  464. we face.

  465. Now

  466. everything

  467. that I've

  468. said to

  469. you

  470. pretty much

  471. up to

  472. this point

  473. outside of

  474. mentioning

  475. Jesus and

  476. his teaching

  477. any secular

  478. prophet

  479. any sage

  480. could have

  481. mentioned

  482. these things

  483. to you.

  484. And so

  485. what do we

  486. do?

  487. What does

  488. Jesus have

  489. to do

  490. with the

  491. hunger of

  492. our hearts

  493. if this

  494. is something

  495. that's

  496. recognized

  497. by wisdom

  498. teachers of

  499. all types?

  500. Well first

  501. I'll point out

  502. what's been

  503. pointed out

  504. by others

  505. the same

  506. thing I

  507. mentioned

  508. when we

  509. talked about

  510. children.

  511. If this

  512. seems

  513. cliche

  514. if it

  515. seems

  516. normal

  517. in every

  518. day

  519. we have

  520. to remember

  521. that's

  522. because

  523. we live

  524. in a

  525. world

  526. that's

  527. been

  528. shaped

  530. Jesus

  531. teaching.

  532. Okay

  533. when the

  534. disciples

  535. heard

  536. Jesus

  537. say

  538. these

  539. things

  540. it

  541. was

  542. not

  543. something

  544. that

  545. they'd

  546. heard

  547. over

  548. and over

  549. before

  550. it was

  551. radical.

  552. they didn't

  553. turn to

  554. Jesus

  555. and say

  556. oh yeah

  557. we heard

  558. that same

  559. thing

  560. the other

  561. day

  562. on this

  563. great

  564. leadership

  565. podcast

  566. you should

  567. listen

  568. to it

  569. you would

  570. really like

  571. that guy.

  572. No

  573. the disciples

  574. were shocked

  575. they were

  576. shocked

  577. that Jesus

  578. view of

  579. power

  580. was

  581. completely

  582. opposite

  583. that

  584. of the

  585. world

  586. and so

  587. we

  588. recognize

  589. as we

  590. see

  591. this

  592. idea

  593. of

  594. servant

  595. leadership

  596. of making

  597. ourselves

  598. slaves

  599. and

  600. servants

  601. if it

  602. seems

  603. commonplace

  604. that's

  605. because

  606. of

  607. Jesus

  608. words

  609. in this

  610. passage

  611. what

  612. might

  613. seem

  614. normal

  615. for us

  616. was

  617. radical

  618. then

  619. because

  620. we

  621. live

  622. in a

  623. world

  624. shaped

  625. by

  626. this

  627. teaching

  628. the

  629. other

  630. thing

  631. that we

  632. recognize

  633. is this

  634. we

  635. might

  636. have

  637. a

  638. secular

  639. prophet

  640. or sage

  641. who

  642. recognizes

  643. that

  644. the heart

  645. has to

  646. feed

  647. on

  648. something

  649. Jesus

  650. is just

  651. the only

  652. one

  653. who

  654. gives

  655. us

  656. the

  657. food

  658. for

  659. the

  660. heart

  661. that's

  662. enough

  663. he's

  664. the only

  665. one

  666. who's

  667. able

  668. to

  669. fill

  670. what

  671. is

  672. otherwise

  673. a

  674. bottomless

  675. hole

  676. because

  677. the only

  678. thing

  679. that can

  680. replace

  681. the love

  682. of men

  683. is the

  684. love

  685. of God

  686. if you

  687. look with

  688. me on

  689. the back

  690. of your

  691. worship

  692. guide

  693. you'll

  694. see this

  695. first quote

  696. by a

  697. man

  698. named

  699. Ryan

  700. Holiday

  701. and part

  702. of the

  703. reason

  704. I

  705. include

  706. this

  707. is

  708. because

  709. he's

  710. an

  711. agnostic

  712. he

  713. doesn't

  714. believe

  715. in

  716. Jesus

  717. in

  718. fact

  719. he

  720. runs

  721. a

  722. very

  723. progressive

  724. bookstore

  725. in

  726. Texas

  727. and by

  728. progressive

  729. I don't

  730. just mean

  731. a specific

  732. political

  733. position

  734. I mean

  735. that Ryan

  736. promotes

  737. and honors

  738. things that

  739. we would

  740. call

  741. truly

  742. wicked

  743. and yet

  744. in the

  745. midst

  746. of all

  747. this

  748. he

  749. understands

  750. at least

  751. something

  752. about the

  753. nature

  754. of the

  755. human

  756. heart

  757. he says

  758. everyone

  759. has a

  760. hungry

  761. heart

  762. but how

  763. we

  764. choose

  765. to feed

  766. that

  767. heart

  768. matters

  769. it's

  770. what

  771. determines

  772. the

  773. kind

  774. of

  775. person

  776. we

  777. end

  778. up

  779. being

  780. what

  781. kind

  782. of

  783. trouble

  784. we'll

  785. get

  786. into

  787. and

  788. whether

  789. we'll

  790. ever

  791. be

  792. full

  793. whether

  794. we'll

  795. ever

  796. really

  797. be

  798. still

  799. what

  800. you

  801. may

  802. know

  803. what

  804. you

  805. know

  806. is

  807. he's

  808. deeply

  809. fascinated

  810. by

  811. C.S.

  812. Lewis

  813. many

  814. of his

  815. writings

  816. are

  817. informed

  818. by that

  819. great

  820. Christian

  821. thinker

  822. and so

  823. he

  824. is

  825. trying

  826. to do

  827. what

  828. many

  829. others

  830. are

  831. which

  832. is

  833. to

  834. have

  835. the

  836. kingdom

  837. without

  838. the

  839. king

  840. to

  841. have

  842. the

  843. fruits

  844. of

  845. Christianity

  846. without

  847. its

  848. root

  849. he

  850. has

  851. a

  852. piece

  853. of

  854. the

  855. truth

  856. but

  857. not

  858. the

  859. whole

  860. thing

  861. he

  862. knows

  863. the

  864. problem

  865. he

  866. just

  867. doesn't

  868. know

  869. the

  870. full

  871. solution

  872. and so

  873. we

  874. can

  875. say

  876. yes

  877. there

  878. are

  879. many

  880. secular

  881. sages

  882. and

  883. prophets

  884. and

  885. preachers

  886. who

  887. remind

  888. us

  889. of the

  890. need

  891. to

  892. fill

  893. the

  894. hunger

  895. of

  896. our

  897. hearts

  898. and

  899. it's

  900. Jesus

  901. alone

  902. who's

  903. able

  904. to

  905. give

  906. us

  907. what

  908. we

  909. need

  910. to

  911. turn

  912. away

  913. from

  914. the

  915. allure

  916. and

  917. temptation

  918. of

  919. power

  920. and

  921. glory

  922. and

  923. honor

  924. and

  925. success

  926. it

  927. is

  928. Jesus

  929. who

  930. allows

  931. us

  932. to

  933. replace

  934. the

  935. love

  936. of

  937. men

  938. with

  939. the

  940. love

  941. of

  942. God

  943. I've

  944. been

  945. telling

  946. you

  947. for

  948. weeks

  949. now

  950. that

  951. the

  952. heart

  953. must

  954. have

  955. something

  956. to

  957. feed

  958. on

  959. if

  960. we

  961. take

  962. away

  963. one

  964. thing

  965. we

  966. have

  967. to

  968. replace

  969. it

  970. with

  971. another

  972. and

  973. there

  974. is

  975. only

  976. one

  977. replacement

  978. that

  979. is

  980. great

  981. enough

  982. that

  983. is

  984. powerful

  985. enough

  986. that

  987. is

  988. glorious

  989. enough

  990. to

  991. take

  992. away

  993. this

  994. temptation

  995. it

  996. is

  997. the

  998. food

  999. and

  1000. the

  1001. love

  1002. and

  1003. the

  1004. knowledge

  1005. that

  1006. we

  1007. are

  1008. secure

  1009. in

  1010. Christ

  1011. a

  1012. woman

  1013. named

  1014. Rebecca

  1015. McLaughlin

  1016. says

  1017. this

  1018. if

  1019. God

  1020. himself

  1021. has

  1022. died

  1023. for

  1024. you

  1025. what

  1026. more

  1027. do

  1028. you

  1029. have

  1030. to

  1031. prove

  1032. if

  1033. the

  1034. creator

  1035. of

  1036. the

  1037. universe

  1038. loved

  1039. you

  1040. enough

  1041. to

  1042. give

  1043. his

  1044. life

  1045. as

  1046. a

  1047. ransom

  1048. for

  1049. yours

  1050. how

  1051. precious

  1052. does

  1053. that

  1054. make

  1055. you

  1056. Jesus

  1057. sacrifice

  1058. for us

  1059. can breed

  1060. humility

  1061. if we

  1062. will only

  1063. let

  1064. it

  1065. we

  1066. won't

  1067. need

  1068. to be

  1069. recognized

  1070. by

  1071. others

  1072. if we

  1073. know

  1074. we

  1075. are

  1076. seen

  1077. and

  1078. known

  1079. and

  1080. deeply

  1081. loved

  1082. by

  1083. the

  1084. king

  1085. of

  1086. all

  1087. the

  1088. universe

  1089. himself

  1090. we

  1091. can

  1092. unclench

  1093. our

  1094. grip

  1095. on

  1096. status

  1097. if

  1098. we

  1099. know

  1100. we're

  1101. held

  1102. in

  1103. Jesus

  1104. hands

  1105. we

  1106. can

  1107. kneel

  1108. down

  1109. if

  1110. we

  1111. are

  1112. sure

  1113. he

  1114. will

  1115. one

  1116. day

  1117. lift

  1118. us

  1119. up

  1120. Jesus

  1121. love

  1122. is

  1123. the

  1124. only

  1125. thing

  1126. secure

  1127. enough

  1128. great

  1129. enough

  1130. to

  1131. release

  1132. to

  1133. release

  1134. to

  1135. release

  1136. on

  1137. to

  1138. point

  1139. out

  1140. that

  1141. crucifixion

  1142. is

  1143. for

  1144. slaves

  1145. but

  1146. Jesus

  1147. receives

  1148. it

  1149. as

  1150. a

  1151. king

  1152. ransoms

  1153. are

  1154. paid

  1155. for

  1156. kings

  1157. not

  1158. by

  1159. kings

  1160. and

  1161. yet

  1162. Jesus

  1163. comes

  1164. as

  1165. the

  1166. only

  1167. king

  1168. to

  1169. pay

  1170. a

  1171. ransom

  1172. for

  1173. slaves

  1174. and

  1175. so

  1176. the

  1177. love

  1178. of

  1179. the

  1180. world

  1181. is

  1182. replaced

  1183. by

  1184. the

  1185. love

  1186. of

  1187. Jesus

  1188. that's

  1189. what

  1190. he's

  1191. telling

  1192. us

  1193. here

  1194. in

  1195. verse

  1196. 45

  1197. for

  1198. even

  1199. the

  1200. son

  1201. of

  1202. man

  1203. came

  1204. not

  1205. to

  1206. be

  1207. served

  1208. but

  1209. to

  1210. serve

  1211. and

  1212. to

  1213. give

  1214. his

  1215. life

  1216. as

  1217. a

  1218. ransom

  1219. for

  1220. many

  1221. when

  1222. you're

  1223. secure

  1224. and

  1225. safe

  1226. in

  1227. the

  1228. love

  1229. of

  1230. God

  1231. glory

  1232. and

  1233. power

  1234. and

  1235. honor

  1236. will

  1237. not

  1238. be

  1239. tempting

  1240. to

  1241. you

  1242. that's

  1243. the

  1244. only

  1245. thing

  1246. powerful

  1247. enough

  1248. in

  1249. 2013

  1250. the

  1251. football

  1252. team

  1253. at

  1254. Olivet

  1255. Middle

  1256. School

  1257. in

  1258. Olivet

  1259. Michigan

  1260. came

  1261. up

  1262. with

  1263. a

  1264. plan

  1265. and

  1266. the

  1267. students

  1268. did

  1269. this

  1270. behind

  1271. the

  1272. backs

  1273. of

  1274. their

  1275. coaches

  1276. and

  1277. behind

  1278. the

  1279. backs

  1280. of

  1281. their

  1282. parents

  1283. no

  1284. one

  1285. knew

  1286. it

  1287. was

  1288. going

  1289. to

  1290. happen

  1291. until

  1292. it

  1293. did

  1294. they

  1295. ran

  1296. a

  1297. play

  1298. to

  1299. intentionally

  1300. not

  1301. score

  1302. they

  1303. decided

  1304. they

  1305. would

  1306. get

  1307. as

  1308. close

  1309. to

  1310. the

  1311. goal

  1312. line

  1313. as

  1314. possible

  1315. but

  1316. they

  1317. would

  1318. stop

  1319. there

  1320. they

  1321. would

  1322. not

  1323. cross

  1324. it

  1325. why

  1326. because

  1327. they

  1328. wanted

  1329. their

  1330. teammate

  1331. Keith

  1332. to

  1333. have

  1334. the

  1335. first

  1336. touchdown

  1337. of

  1338. his

  1339. entire

  1340. life

  1341. Keith

  1342. was

  1343. a

  1344. student

  1345. with special

  1346. needs

  1347. who

  1348. struggled

  1349. with social

  1350. and learning

  1351. disabilities

  1352. and so

  1353. they stopped

  1354. right there

  1355. at the

  1356. goal line

  1357. and at the

  1358. next play

  1359. all of the

  1360. players

  1361. surrounded

  1362. Keith

  1363. and made

  1364. sure that

  1365. as they

  1366. rushed

  1367. he was in

  1368. the middle

  1369. with them

  1370. holding

  1371. the ball

  1372. they

  1373. decided

  1374. they

  1375. they

  1376. decided

  1377. instead

  1378. of

  1379. pushing

  1380. others

  1381. down

  1382. to

  1383. lift

  1384. themselves

  1385. up

  1386. they

  1387. would

  1388. push

  1389. themselves

  1390. down

  1391. to

  1392. lift

  1393. someone

  1394. else

  1395. up

  1396. they

  1397. went

  1398. from

  1399. looking

  1400. for

  1401. their

  1402. own

  1403. glory

  1404. their

  1405. own

  1406. opportunities

  1407. to score

  1408. to become

  1409. servants

  1410. and

  1411. slaves

  1412. for

  1413. Keith

  1414. their

  1415. wide

  1416. receiver

  1417. justice

  1418. Miller

  1419. admitted

  1420. that

  1421. it

  1422. wasn't

  1423. his

  1424. idea

  1425. because

  1426. all

  1427. he

  1428. would

  1429. think

  1430. about

  1431. is

  1432. himself

  1433. and

  1434. his

  1435. friends

  1436. but

  1437. after

  1438. what

  1439. they

  1440. did

  1441. for

  1442. Keith

  1443. it

  1444. has

  1445. changed

  1446. the

  1447. way

  1448. he

  1449. looks

  1450. at

  1451. the

  1452. world

  1453. he

  1454. just

  1455. needed

  1456. someone

  1457. else

  1458. to

  1459. suggest

  1460. it

  1461. brothers

  1462. and

  1463. sisters

  1464. we

  1465. can

  1466. only

  1467. lift

  1468. others

  1469. up

  1470. if

  1471. and

  1472. when

  1473. we

  1474. believe

  1475. our

  1476. spot

  1477. our

  1478. place

  1479. is

  1480. secure

  1481. and

  1482. it

  1483. is

  1484. in

  1485. Jesus

  1486. Christ

  1487. we

  1488. can

  1489. only

  1490. lift

  1491. others

  1492. up

  1493. and

  1494. look

  1495. out

  1496. for

  1497. them

  1498. when

  1499. we

  1500. know

  1501. that

  1502. no

  1503. matter

  1504. what

  1505. we

  1506. have

  1507. a

  1508. place

  1509. on

  1510. the

  1511. team

  1512. and

  1513. we

  1514. do

  1515. because

  1516. Jesus

  1517. died

  1518. for

  1519. us

  1520. whoever

  1521. would

  1522. be

  1523. first

  1524. among

  1525. you

  1526. must

  1527. be

  1528. slave

  1529. of

  1530. all

  1531. for

  1532. even

  1533. the

  1534. son

  1535. of

  1536. man

  1537. came

  1538. not

  1539. to

  1540. be

  1541. served

  1542. but

  1543. to

  1544. serve

  1545. and

  1546. to

  1547. give

  1548. his

  1549. life

  1550. as

  1551. a

  1552. ransom

  1553. for

  1554. many

  1555. let's

  1556. pray

  1557. our

  1558. father

  1559. in

  1560. heaven

  1561. we

  1562. praise

  1563. you

  1564. this

  1565. morning

  1566. that

  1567. we

  1568. are

  1569. safe

  1570. and

  1571. secure

  1572. in

  1573. your

  1574. love

  1575. that

  1576. nothing

  1577. can

  1578. threaten

  1579. that

  1580. that

  1581. you

  1582. have

  1583. showed

  1584. us

  1585. our

  1586. value

  1587. and

  1588. our

  1589. worth

  1590. in

  1591. Jesus

  1592. and

  1593. his

  1594. sacrifice

  1595. his

  1596. death

  1597. for

  1598. us

  1599. we

  1600. ask

  1601. that

  1602. you

  1603. would

  1604. make

  1605. us

  1606. secure

  1607. and

  1608. safe

  1609. in

  1610. that

  1611. that

  1612. we

  1613. would

  1614. know

  1615. it

  1616. and

  1617. so

  1618. that

  1619. we

  1620. would

  1621. be

  1622. able

  1623. to

  1624. take

  1625. risks

  1626. to

  1627. offer

  1628. it

  1629. and

  1630. give

  1631. it

  1632. away

  1633. to

  1634. others

  1635. we

  1636. ask

  1637. these

  1638. things

  1639. in

  1640. the

  1641. mighty

  1642. name

  1643. of

  1644. Jesus

  1645. Christ

  1646. and
