  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad.

  4. They can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  5. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark and you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in his life and his death and his resurrection.

  6. And as we were going through the beginning, chapters 1 through 8, we asked this question, who is Jesus?

  7. We saw in the middle of chapter 8, Peter answers it definitively for us, that Jesus is the Christ.

  8. He's the one who's come to be the ultimate prophet, priest, and king for God's people.

  9. And so now we've been on a journey with a slightly different question heading out from that, which is what does it look like to follow after Jesus?

  10. And over the last few weeks, we have seen, as Jesus literally heads to Jerusalem, that the kingdom operates in a way that is upside down.

  11. It operates in a way that is different from the world.

  12. We've seen that when it came to marriage and sex.

  13. We've seen that when it comes to children, when it comes to money, and then last week when it comes to power and glory and success and fame.

  14. Now this week, it might appear on the surface that we've turned away from that, that we're simply looking at another healing story.

  15. In fact, this is the last healing that Jesus will perform before Holy Week begins in chapter 11.

  16. But it is actually not just another blind man who's given sight.

  17. Jesus is using this, Mark is using this, as a conclusion to the upside down nature of the kingdom.

  18. In fact, it in some ways connects all the stories that come before what we've seen over the last month or so,

  19. as Jesus gets right at the issue of desire.

  20. Because all the things that we've looked at, marriage, children, money, power, get at what it is that our hearts most long for.

  21. What we dream of, what we want, the results that we look for.

  22. And so it's with that I invite you to turn with me to God's word.

  23. We're in Mark chapter 10, starting at verse 46.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  24. You can turn in your worship guide, you can turn on your phone, you can turn in your Bible.

  25. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  26. In Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  27. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  28. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 46.

  29. And they came to Jericho.

  30. And as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd,

  31. Bartimaeus, a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside.

  32. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say,

  33. Jesus, son of David, have mercy on me.

  34. Verse 48.

  35. And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.

  36. But he cried out all the more, son of David, have mercy on me.

  37. And Jesus stopped and said, call him.

  38. And they called the blind man, saying to him, take heart, get up.

  39. He is calling you.

  40. Verse 50.

  41. And throwing off his cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus.

  42. And Jesus said to him, what do you want me to do for you?

  43. And the blind man said to him, Rabbi, let me recover my sight.

  44. And Jesus said to him, go your way.

  45. Your faith has made you well.

  46. And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

  47. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  48. Our Father in heaven, we come again to your word.

  49. And we thank you that you promise that it won't return to you empty.

  50. But it will accomplish all of your purposes.

  51. And so we ask that you would honor that promise this morning,

  52. that you would use it to accomplish your purposes in our hearts, in our minds, in our lives.

  53. That you would do for us what we can't do for ourselves.

  54. That you'd change hearts of stone into hearts of flesh.

  55. That you'd show us our need for you and your salvation.

  56. And you'd also show us your grace.

  57. Most of all, we ask that you would show us Jesus,

  58. that we would see exactly how beautiful he is.

  59. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  60. Amen.

  61. When I was in seminary,

  62. the seminary that I went to also offered a counseling program.

  63. And there were a variety of men that I came in with

  64. who came in thinking that they were going to be pastors.

  65. And they left instead being counselors.

  66. Some of my best friends, in fact.

  67. And there was an exercise that some of those counselors had to do

  68. in their very last year of the program together when they were doing their internship.

  69. Meaning they were practicing with actual clients in real life situations.

  70. And then they would meet together to be coached and mentored and to discuss these things.

  71. And some of them in their coaching groups were required to do an exercise

  72. that they referred to as goaling.

  73. Goaling, going along with the word goal.

  74. Something that you want or desire.

  75. And that was, in fact, the purpose of the exercise.

  76. It was for them to answer this question.

  77. What is it that you really want?

  78. What is it deep down that your heart longs for

  79. that maybe you've not been willing to say out loud before,

  80. but now you need to say something you've not been willing to admit to anyone?

  81. And it turned out to be a much harder exercise than it sounds like on the surface

  82. because it involves grappling with what it is we want most of all.

  83. The person who presents a public image of having this carefree existence that they love,

  84. full of trips and experiences,

  85. has to wrestle with whether they actually are deeply lonely

  86. and want to find someone to settle down with.

  87. The person who presents as a family man has to ask himself

  88. if deep down he wants professional success more than anything else.

  89. Maybe someone works for a company nine to five

  90. and what they're afraid to say out loud

  91. is that they wish that they could work for themselves.

  92. Maybe it's something as simple as being comfortable financially.

  93. Maybe you just want to have friends who you can trust,

  94. who enjoy you, and whom you enjoy.

  95. Desire is a funny thing,

  96. and often we haven't slowed down enough to know what it is we actually want.

  97. We can be caught off guard by them when they appear.

  98. Now, when these counselors were given this exercise,

  99. the story that I heard they were told at the very beginning,

  100. a sobering one was of a man who did the goaling,

  101. and he decided at the end of it

  102. that what he wanted more than anything else,

  103. his desire, what he was going to head for,

  104. was he had a number in his head of his annual salary.

  105. This man wanted to make $500,000 a year.

  106. And at the end of the year,

  107. after he had completed his goaling exercise,

  108. he had accomplished what he set out to do.

  109. He was making $500,000 a year,

  110. except that there was a catch.

  111. In that year, he had also lost his family.

  112. Desire is a dangerous thing.

  113. The heart is a risky thing.

  114. And as they say,

  115. we have to be careful what we wish for

  116. because we might have the misfortune of actually getting it.

  117. I told you on the surface,

  118. this might look like just another healing story for Jesus,

  119. but actually it's deeply connected to our passage from last week.

  120. It's so connected, in fact,

  121. that I almost preached last week's passage

  122. and this week's passage as one sermon rather than two,

  123. and it's because there's this phrase that appears in both stories.

  124. There's this connection that ties them intimately together.

  125. It's Jesus' question that he asked last week in verse 36.

  126. Remember, James and John come to him and they say,

  127. we want you to give us whatever it is that we ask for.

  128. And Jesus responds by saying this,

  129. what do you want me to do for you?

  130. It's not a coincidence that that same exact question appears in this passage.

  131. This blind man is crying out to Jesus.

  132. Those around him are trying to silence him.

  133. Jesus calls him to come.

  134. And what is it that Jesus says to him?

  135. The exact same words.

  136. What do you want me to do for you?

  137. Mark has placed these two stories together

  138. because he wants us to put them side by side.

  139. He wants us to see this same question asked of two different people

  140. and for us to realize how radically different the answers are.

  141. One answers that they want power, honor, and glory.

  142. The other one answers that he just wants to be able to see.

  143. Verse 51,

  144. Rabbi, let me recover my sight.

  145. I've told you before that repetition in the Bible matters.

  146. And this repetition here is not just meant to tie these two stories together.

  147. It is to turn the barrel of the story straight at us, the readers,

  148. because the question that Jesus asks of James and John,

  149. the question that he asks of this blind man,

  150. is the same question Mark means for his readers to answer.

  151. What is it that you want Jesus to do for you?

  152. When we come into this story, verse 46,

  153. they're crossing the Jordan River,

  154. which means that they're heading from the west towards the east.

  155. This is to remind us that Jesus is getting closer and closer to Jerusalem.

  156. And so as he's nearing the cross,

  157. things are coming into greater and greater focus.

  158. Next week, chapter 11 is going to start out with his triumphal entry into Jerusalem

  159. when he rides a donkey as a conquering king.

  160. I've told you before that as the gospel of Mark continues,

  161. we're going to see three groups of people merge into two.

  162. It's been pointed out that as we begin in the gospel,

  163. there are folks who love Jesus,

  164. folks who are opposed to Jesus,

  165. and folks who are ambivalent to Jesus.

  166. As we continue in the gospel,

  167. that middle category disappears,

  168. and we only have two.

  169. Either we love Jesus and want to follow him,

  170. or we're opposed to him and reject him.

  171. It's in that that we see this man,

  172. verse 47,

  173. he's crying out.

  174. Maybe he's ashamed,

  175. maybe he's embarrassed,

  176. but he is too desperate to care.

  177. He does something else that's interesting.

  178. In verse 47,

  179. he hears that it's Jesus of Nazareth,

  180. but he doesn't cry that out.

  181. What does he say instead?

  182. Did you notice it?

  183. He says,

  184. Jesus,

  185. son of David.

  186. That son of David is language that refers to Jesus as the king,

  187. because remember that David was the quintessential king of Israel,

  188. and it was from David's line that the greater king was meant to come.

  189. And so this blind man,

  190. at least at some level,

  191. understands Jesus' identity.

  192. He knows something about the fact that Jesus is the king.

  193. But unlike the disciples,

  194. unlike James and John,

  195. he also understands something about himself.

  196. Verses 47 and 48,

  197. we hear twice,

  198. have mercy on me.

  199. Verse 48,

  200. they try to silence him,

  201. but it doesn't matter because his need is too great.

  202. Brothers and sisters,

  203. the point is this.

  204. Jesus is not going to be beautiful to us

  205. unless we know,

  206. until we know,

  207. that we need his mercy.

  208. Jesus is not going to be beautiful to us.

  209. Until we know,

  210. unless we know,

  211. how much we need him.

  212. If Jesus is boring and unattractive,

  213. if he seems irrelevant,

  214. if you are wondering why it is that you're plotting along in the Christian life,

  215. I can tell you there's at least one reason,

  216. and it's this.

  217. You don't think your situation is that bad.

  218. Maybe you need some tweaks,

  219. some life hacks,

  220. but you don't need something as radical

  221. as going from death to life,

  222. from a heart of stone

  223. into a heart of flesh.

  224. This man, though,

  225. this blind man,

  226. has a physical problem

  227. meant to teach us a spiritual lesson.

  228. His need is so great.

  229. He is so desperate

  230. that he doesn't care

  231. who tells him to shut up.

  232. He doesn't care

  233. how awkward or embarrassing

  234. the situation is.

  235. He needs the son of David

  236. to heal him.

  237. And glory and power

  238. and honor

  239. which are at the front

  240. of James and John's mind

  241. are irrelevant to him.

  242. Because there is something

  243. much, much more important.

  244. I warned you at the beginning

  245. of the Gospel of Mark

  246. when we preached chapter 1,

  247. verses 1 through 8,

  248. that it was not going to be

  249. an intellectual.

  250. We're not here

  251. to have just profound insights

  252. into God's word,

  253. but we are instead here

  254. to be saved.

  255. I told you over and over

  256. that we have to admit

  257. real need,

  258. that that's the price

  259. of admission

  260. when it comes to Jesus

  261. and his kingdom.

  262. And the Gospel of Mark

  263. does just that.

  264. If you're reading carefully,

  265. if you're listening,

  266. if you're feeling it,

  267. the Gospel pushes on you.

  268. Mark is demanding

  269. a response.

  270. Brothers and sisters,

  271. Jesus himself

  272. demands a response.

  273. Either we are for him

  274. or we are against him.

  275. We were meant to answer

  276. at the beginning

  277. who we believe he is.

  278. And now Jesus

  279. presses us to answer

  280. what it is

  281. our hearts most long for.

  282. The reader is meant

  283. to connect the dots here

  284. and answer this question

  285. for herself.

  286. And so I ask you again,

  287. what is it that you want

  288. Jesus to do for you?

  289. Have you slowed down enough

  290. to know what it is

  291. your heart craves

  292. and longs for?

  293. Maybe like James and John,

  294. you're hoping Jesus

  295. will finally provide

  296. the approval of others.

  297. That if you can say

  298. the right things

  299. at the right time

  300. in church,

  301. that you'll be significant

  302. and powerful,

  303. that your life will matter.

  304. Maybe you're hoping

  305. that Jesus is going

  306. to provide you

  307. with a simple

  308. and easy family

  309. where things

  310. always go smoothly.

  311. Maybe you're hoping

  312. he's going to provide you

  313. with a spouse.

  314. Maybe what you want

  315. from Jesus

  316. is simply to give

  317. those you love

  318. the worldly success

  319. that you want for them.

  320. maybe you just want

  321. to be left alone,

  322. comfortable

  323. and at ease.

  324. And it doesn't feel

  325. like you're asking

  326. for too much.

  327. It probably didn't feel

  328. like too much

  329. to James and John.

  330. And we know that it didn't

  331. because they did.

  332. And Jesus is actually

  333. offering something

  334. far better.

  335. Jesus says here,

  336. I will give you sight

  337. if you're willing

  338. to admit you're blind.

  339. I will give you sight

  340. if you're willing

  341. to admit

  342. that you're blind.

  343. What is it

  344. that you actually want?

  345. What is it

  346. that you want me

  347. to do

  348. for you?

  349. And so really

  350. Jesus here

  351. is pulling together

  352. everything we've seen

  353. over the last

  354. four weeks

  355. and beyond

  356. because this is

  357. the upside down

  358. nature of the gospel

  359. all over again.

  360. It is not

  361. for the strong

  362. but for the weak.

  363. It's not for those

  364. who are well

  365. but for those

  366. who are sick.

  367. Remember John the Baptist

  368. at the very beginning

  369. came to prepare

  370. the way for Jesus

  371. and he prepared

  372. the way for Jesus

  373. in this sense

  374. specifically

  375. that people had

  376. to come to him

  377. and repent

  378. of their sins.

  379. That they were

  380. naming what was wrong

  381. so that the doctor

  382. the great physician

  383. could come

  384. and heal them.

  385. And that's exactly

  386. what Jesus does here.

  387. Verse 52

  388. Go your way

  389. your faith

  390. has made you well.

  391. And what is this man's fate?

  392. That he knows

  393. how great his need is

  394. and he doesn't give up

  395. until Jesus answers.

  396. That is what we are meant

  397. to want Jesus

  398. to do for us.

  399. We are meant to see

  400. our great need of him.

  401. Jesus offers

  402. to heal you too.

  403. if you will let him.

  404. If you will admit

  405. your need.

  406. If you can say

  407. with the blind man

  408. son of David

  409. have mercy on me.

  410. as we think

  411. and look

  412. at our desires

  413. it may be

  414. sobering

  415. and convicting

  416. it may be hard

  417. and challenging

  418. you may be filled

  419. with a certain sense

  420. of conviction

  421. and need

  422. to change

  423. and duty

  424. and guilt

  425. and shame

  426. will not help you.

  427. In fact

  428. that is what we just sang

  429. in our new song

  430. this morning.

  431. I invite you to look there

  432. with me on page 6.

  433. What we sang

  434. right before the sermon

  435. is a song

  436. about what it takes

  437. for Jesus

  438. to be beautiful to us

  439. for our desires

  440. to be pointed

  441. in the right direction

  442. and we are told this

  443. in the second verse

  444. at the end

  445. it is not a sense

  446. of right

  447. or duty.

  448. Duty will not change

  449. what our hearts

  450. long for.

  451. Knowing what is right

  452. will not change

  453. what it is

  454. we love

  455. but instead

  456. we are told here

  457. the sight

  458. of peerless worth.

  459. In other words

  460. the sight

  461. of knowing

  462. and seeing

  463. that Jesus

  464. is more beautiful

  465. and more precious

  466. and greater

  467. than anything else.

  468. And what is it

  469. that is going

  470. to lead us

  471. to look at Jesus

  472. and see his beauty

  473. as more

  474. than any other beauty.

  475. It is going

  476. to happen

  477. when that diamond

  478. is set

  479. against the black backdrop.

  480. It is going

  481. to happen

  482. when we see

  483. God's grace

  484. and we know

  485. our need.

  486. Food is beautiful

  487. to a hungry man.

  488. Hospitals

  489. are welcome

  490. to those

  491. who need

  492. healing.

  493. Guilt

  494. won't

  495. get you

  496. there.

  497. Duty

  498. won't

  499. get you

  500. there.

  501. It is

  502. Jesus

  503. and his

  504. beauty

  505. that

  506. changes

  507. our

  508. hearts

  509. and

  510. our

  511. desires.

  512. And so

  513. this passage

  514. is calling

  515. us to ask

  516. this question

  517. that we've

  518. seen

  519. already.

  520. I've mentioned

  521. many times

  522. what is it

  523. that you

  524. want me

  525. to do

  526. for you?

  527. What is

  528. the desire

  529. of your

  530. heart?

  531. What is it

  532. that you

  533. long for

  534. more than

  535. anything

  536. else?

  537. Is it

  538. leading you

  539. to life

  540. or to

  541. death?

  542. The blind

  543. man here

  544. gives us

  545. the model

  546. and the

  547. answer.

  548. What we

  549. need more

  550. than anything

  551. else is to

  552. be healed.

  553. When we

  554. know that,

  555. what we

  556. will long

  557. for more

  558. than anything

  559. else is

  560. for Jesus.

  561. that is

  562. the sight

  563. of

  564. peerless

  565. worth.

  566. In the

  567. Lord of the

  568. Rings

  569. trilogy,

  570. the very

  571. beginning,

  572. we meet

  573. this character

  574. named

  575. Gollum.

  576. And while

  577. he might

  578. not appear

  579. or act

  580. like it,

  581. Gollum was

  582. a hobbit

  583. at one

  584. point who

  585. has been

  586. twisted by

  587. the years

  588. that he

  589. spent with

  590. the ring.

  591. The thing

  592. that he

  593. loves and

  594. desires more

  595. than anything

  596. else, he's

  597. been with

  598. it for

  599. 500 years

  600. and it

  601. still hasn't

  602. been enough

  603. to satisfy

  604. him.

  605. And Yegala

  606. keeps running

  607. after it as

  608. we get to

  609. the end of

  610. the third

  611. book, the

  612. return of

  613. the king.

  614. Frodo and

  615. Sam have

  616. made it near

  617. the end of

  618. their journey.

  619. They just

  620. need to get

  621. into Mount

  622. Doom so

  623. that they

  624. can drop

  625. the ring

  626. into the

  627. lake of

  628. fire and

  629. destroy it

  630. forever.

  631. But as

  632. they journey,

  633. Sam notices

  634. that someone

  635. is following

  636. them,

  637. and he

  638. realizes that

  639. Gollum is

  640. still after

  641. the ring.

  642. When they

  643. sleep at

  644. night, then

  645. he and

  646. Frodo take

  647. turns staying

  648. up, afraid

  649. Gollum will

  650. come to

  651. steal and

  652. kill.

  653. As the

  654. journey

  655. continues,

  656. Frodo is

  657. so warned

  658. that Sam

  659. has to

  660. carry him

  661. at points

  662. to get

  663. to the

  664. top of

  665. Mount

  666. Doom.

  667. And near

  668. the end,

  669. it's so

  670. hard that

  671. they crawl

  672. on hands

  673. and knees

  674. to enter

  675. in so

  676. that they

  677. can get

  678. to this

  679. place to

  680. destroy the

  681. ring once

  682. and for

  683. all.

  684. Sam thinks

  685. that they're

  686. done with

  687. Gollum until

  688. the very

  689. last moment

  690. when he

  691. comes,

  692. knocks Sam

  693. aside and

  694. begins a

  695. wrestling match

  696. with Frodo.

  697. He wants

  698. the ring so

  699. much that he

  700. bites off

  701. Frodo's

  702. finger and

  703. then cries

  704. out in joy

  705. that he

  706. finally has

  707. it.

  708. gollum

  709. and then

  710. gollum

  711. falls off

  712. the ledge

  713. and he

  714. dies because

  715. he's burned

  716. in the

  717. fires of

  718. Mount

  719. Doom.

  720. Gollum

  721. gets

  722. what he

  723. desires

  724. and it

  725. kills him.

  726. he burns

  727. in the

  728. lake

  729. of fire.

  730. What do

  731. you want

  732. Jesus to

  733. do for

  734. you?

  735. This

  736. passage tells

  737. us it's a

  738. matter of

  739. life and

  740. death.

  741. Let's pray.

  742. our

  743. father in

  744. heaven we

  745. thank you

  746. this morning

  747. that you

  748. know that

  749. we're feeble

  750. and fragile

  751. people and

  752. that you

  753. meet us at

  754. that place

  755. with your

  756. grace.

  757. We ask

  758. that you

  759. would show

  760. us what

  761. it is that

  762. we long

  763. for and

  764. love.

  765. That you

  766. turn us

  767. to want

  768. you and

  769. your grace

  770. more than

  771. anything else.

  772. You'd show

  773. us our need

  774. for your

  775. mercy and

  776. that we

  777. would run

  778. to you

  779. with joy.

  780. We ask

  781. these things

  782. in the

  783. mighty name

  784. of Jesus

  785. Christ.

  786. Amen.

  787. I invite

  788. you to

  789. stand for

  790. our closing

  791. hymn.
