  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection,

  11. and we have kind of two movements to the Gospel.

  12. Chapters 1 through 8, we were asking this question of who is Jesus,

  13. which we saw definitively answered by Peter in the middle of chapter 8 when he said that you are the Christ.

  14. And now we're in the second half, chapters 8 through 16,

  15. which answer this question of what it actually looks like to follow after Jesus.

  16. And so that's what we've been talking about over the last several weeks,

  17. that following Him looks like this upside-down nature of the kingdom.

  18. And I don't need to tell you that it's been a little bit intense.

  19. We've had some hard topics as we've tackled marriage and sex and children and money and power and success and glory and fame,

  20. how all of those things are different in the kingdom of God than they are in the kingdom of the world.

  21. And then last week, we topped it off with this topic of desire.

  22. Jesus asks this question,

  23. What is it that you want me to do for you?

  24. And so this week, we're going to pause for a moment all of those questions

  25. and just look at, meditate on together who Jesus is.

  26. Because we can talk about the upside-down nature of the kingdom all day,

  27. but it must have some sort of motivation.

  28. There has to be something great enough and glorious enough for us to want to live in a way that goes against our culture.

  29. We actually have to see Jesus' beauty.

  30. And so the song that we just sang set us up perfectly.

  31. We sang,

  32. Captivated by His beauty, worthy tribute, haste to bring.

  33. Crown Him now, unrivaled King.

  34. It's in seeing Jesus' beauty that we're able to live in His kingdom.

  35. And we also sang,

  36. It's not a sense of right or duty, but the sight of peerless worth.

  37. And that's why I'm so passionate about this song,

  38. because it reminds us that we have to see Jesus before anything else.

  39. And so we're just going to look at that this morning,

  40. the type of king that Jesus is,

  41. the fact that He has a greater beauty, a greater love than any earthly king.

  42. Unless we put our eyes on Jesus,

  43. we're going to be tempted to put them on other saviors and rulers,

  44. saviors and rulers that will destroy us rather than save us.

  45. And so that's why it's incredibly important for us to pause and look at Jesus this morning,

  46. the great and greater king.

  47. It's with that that I invite you to turn with me in your Bible.

  48. You can turn in your worship guide.

  49. You can turn on your phone.

  50. You can turn in your Bible.

  51. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  52. And in Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5,

    Proverbs 30:5

  53. we read that every word of God proves true.

  54. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  55. And so that's why we're going to read now Mark chapter 11, starting at verse 1.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  56. Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethpage and Bethany at the Mount of Olives,

  57. Jesus sent two of His disciples and said to them,

  58. Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it,

  59. you will find a colt tied on which no one has ever sat.

  60. Untie it and bring it.

  61. Verse 3.

  62. If anyone says to you, Why are you doing this?

  63. Say, The Lord has need of it, and will send it back here immediately.

  64. And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street,

  65. and they untied it.

  66. Verse 5.

  67. And some of those standing there said to them,

  68. What are you doing untying the colt?

  69. And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go.

  70. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it,

  71. and he sat on it.

  72. And many spread their cloaks on the road,

  73. and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.

  74. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting,

  75. Hosanna!

  76. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  77. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David.

  78. Hosanna in the highest.

  79. Verse 11.

  80. And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple.

  81. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late,

  82. he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

  83. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  84. Father in heaven, we thank you again for giving us your word,

  85. and we ask that you would speak to us again.

  86. We ask that as we look at the challenging nature of your kingdom,

  87. more than anything else,

  88. you would help us to have a clear and precise vision of Jesus,

  89. that you would show us his holiness and his love and his beauty

  90. and his glory this morning,

  91. that we would be captured by it more than anything else.

  92. We thank you,

  93. that we don't have to worry about whether we've been good enough,

  94. whether we've done enough,

  95. whether we've earned enough,

  96. because we know that we haven't.

  97. But instead, we simply ask for these things

  98. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  99. Amen.

  100. Amen.

  101. I've been telling you for a while now

  102. that Jesus is heading on his path to Jerusalem,

  103. and that continues in this passage.

  104. In fact, we see that he's practically arrived in verse 1.

  105. We're told they drew near to Jerusalem.

  106. If I told you that someone was driving,

  107. and first they passed by Briargate,

  108. and then they were in downtown Colorado Springs,

  109. and shortly thereafter,

  110. they were getting close to Shine Mountain,

  111. you would know that they're headed in what direction?

  112. You know that they're headed south.

  113. The Gospel writer is telling us here,

  114. in the order of locations,

  115. that Jesus is heading directly west.

  116. He is on a collision course with the city of Jerusalem.

  117. That's what he's telling us here with Bethpage,

  118. and Bethany, and the Mount of Olives.

  119. Bethany is actually this suburb that's east of Jerusalem,

  120. and it appears to be where Jesus stays for a few days

  121. before Passion Week,

  122. and at the very beginning of Passion Week.

  123. That's why at verse 11, we see him return there.

  124. Now, in the past, remember it was important

  125. for Jesus to keep his kingship a secret.

  126. We talked before about the fact that he told various people

  127. who received healings not to tell too many people about him,

  128. not to spread the word, to keep what he knew under wraps.

  129. The time for that has passed.

  130. Jesus is no longer interested in keeping his kingship a secret.

  131. In fact, he does the opposite in this passage.

  132. He starts to do king kind of things.

  133. He does the sort of things that the people of Israel are looking for.

  134. He's playing in, in some ways, to their expectations,

  135. their hopes that this Messiah is going to come once and for all

  136. and set things right.

  137. Remember, that's why James and John were so eager

  138. to sit at his left and his right hand,

  139. because they knew that the moment of Jesus' kingship

  140. was drawing near as they approached Jerusalem.

  141. In verses 2 through 6 here,

  142. as Jesus sends for this donkey to ride,

  143. he is commanding what belongs to him.

  144. The whole world, in fact, is his kingdom.

  145. And what he's doing here is an ancient tradition called Royal Angaria,

  146. which is where kings would be able to command whatever they needed.

  147. In sending for this donkey, this colt,

  148. and just saying, the Lord has need of it,

  149. Jesus is saying clearly to everyone,

  150. I am behaving just like a king.

  151. Even more than that, though, in verses 7 through 9,

  152. Jesus comes in riding on this colt,

  153. doing what we would not expect him to do

  154. when he left in our previous passage.

  155. Remember, he healed Bartimaeus.

  156. He was leaving with this crowd,

  157. and this would have been a crowd that was heading to Jerusalem

  158. for a pilgrimage.

  159. Well, what is it that pilgrims do as they enter Jerusalem?

  160. Jerusalem.

  161. They walk on their feet.

  162. As one of my friends might say,

  163. they used their Lamberfittis to get into Jerusalem.

  164. And Jesus, in fact, does the opposite.

  165. Who is it that's supposed to ride into Jerusalem?

  166. Well, it's supposed to be a king who is returning

  167. from a conquering,

  168. from a successful military campaign.

  169. In fact, that's what would have happened over and over.

  170. There's a reason this is called the triumphal entry,

  171. which is that Roman generals would have a triumph.

  172. They would come in riding a war horse

  173. to show that they had been victorious.

  174. They were the ones in charge.

  175. Even more than that, verse 8,

  176. what is it that these people do in response?

  177. Most likely, they've been traveling with Jesus this entire time.

  178. They're the ones who were with him

  179. when he healed blind Bartimaeus,

  180. and they begin to throw their cloaks on the ground,

  181. which is a sign of submission to the king.

  182. And so Jesus is doing everything we would expect

  183. a conquering king to do

  184. as he's approaching this city,

  185. except for one thing.

  186. Jesus should not be riding a donkey.

  187. If he is a great and conquering king,

  188. he needs to be returning from war on a war horse.

  189. And yet Jesus here is being incredibly subversive.

  190. We read earlier this morning,

  191. Zechariah chapter 9,

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  192. which I'm going to refer to as well.

  193. And what we read there is that

  194. there is going to be this king.

  195. You can turn back with me,

  196. page 3 of your worship guide.

  197. Your king is coming to you,

  198. humble and mounted on a donkey,

  199. on a colt,

  200. the foal of a donkey.

  201. Jesus is telling them,

  202. yes, I'm entering as a king,

  203. but heads up,

  204. I'm the Zechariah 9-9 king.

  205. I am not the king you expect.

  206. We see two things about this king

  207. as Jesus makes this reference

  208. from what we learn from Zechariah 9.

  209. The first one is that this king

  210. is a humble king.

  211. That's what we're told.

  212. Behold, your king is coming to you,

  213. righteous and having salvation,

  214. as he humble and mounted on a donkey,

  215. on a colt,

  216. the foal of a donkey.

  217. In other words, he's so humble,

  218. he's not just coming in on a donkey.

  219. He's coming in on a baby donkey.

  220. That is how humble and lowly he is.

  221. Instead of experiencing comforts

  222. and pleasure in this life,

  223. he is going to experience

  224. suffering and poverty.

  225. He is going to be born in a manger.

  226. He's going to be working class.

  227. He's going to be on the move.

  228. He's going to be going to people

  229. rather than demanding that they come to him.

  230. That's why Jesus says in Matthew 8,

  231. foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests,

  232. but the son of man has nowhere to lay his head

  233. because he is the humble king.

  234. He is the king who comes in riding a donkey.

  235. He's the king that we were told about in Isaiah 53,

  236. despised and rejected by men,

  237. a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.

  238. He's not greeted with praise and love

  239. and admiration throughout his story,

  240. but he's greeted with opposition,

  241. hatred,

  242. and those who wish to kill him.

  243. The king on the donkey

  244. is the king who's going to bring salvation

  245. through humility.

  246. The story is told of Dan Cathy,

  247. who's the president and CEO of Chick-fil-A,

  248. and at one point he was in California

  249. visiting a construction site for a new franchise,

  250. and he became hungry,

  251. and of course the franchise wasn't open.

  252. They weren't able to serve him any Christian chicken,

  253. and so he had to go and visit the Taco Bell next door.

  254. The man who was with him reported

  255. that he and Dan had to go to the bathroom together afterwards,

  256. and he saw something very strange.

  257. After Dan had finished washing his hands,

  258. he pulled out some extra paper towels

  259. and began also cleaning the sinks

  260. of the Taco Bell bathroom.

  261. Now, maybe Dan Cathy is that much of a neat freak,

  262. but there's a certain humility,

  263. there's a certain service

  264. that characterizes him in that moment, right?

  265. He is so humble,

  266. he's cleaning the bathroom of his competitors.

  267. Jesus cleans the bathroom,

  268. not of his competitors,

  269. but of his enemies.

  270. Jesus came to clean up the mess

  271. left by you and me.

  272. He is not characterized by one moment of service

  273. in a life filled with wealth and power and privilege,

  274. he's characterized by an entire existence.

  275. Dan Cathy for a moment,

  276. Jesus for his life.

  277. When Jesus rides in on the donkey,

  278. he is telling us he is the king who is with us.

  279. He knows the pains of life like we do,

  280. and I would say in some ways even more.

  281. Jesus experienced a standard of living,

  282. a type of poverty

  283. that I would imagine most of us here today

  284. have no concept of.

  285. Jesus knows more of suffering than we do.

  286. Most kings are insulated from the pains of life.

  287. Jesus instead runs into them.

  288. Many earthly rulers lack integrity.

  289. They say one thing and do another.

  290. And even the best earthly rulers

  291. are imperfect and flawed.

  292. And Jesus is the king,

  293. the ruler who has lived differently than us

  294. because he lived worse than us.

  295. He's the king who takes on more suffering than us.

  296. He is the humble king.

  297. That's why Hebrews chapter 4 tells us

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

  298. we don't have a high priest

  299. who's unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  300. but one who in every respect

  301. has been tempted as we are yet without sin.

  302. captivated by his beauty,

  303. tribute to him bring.

  304. Not right or duty,

  305. but the sight of peerless worth.

  306. Why do we follow Jesus?

  307. Because he is the great

  308. but also humble king.

  309. He is worth following much more

  310. than Dan, Kathy,

  311. or any other inspirational human leader.

  312. Compared to Jesus,

  313. they are selfish idiots.

  314. Jesus is greater

  315. and more glorious

  316. and more loving.

  317. Jesus is more sacrificial

  318. than any other king

  319. we could follow.

  320. He is the humble king.

  321. And so look at him.

  322. Meditate on him.

  323. See his beauty.

  324. Let it captivate your heart

  325. more than any other beauty.

  326. Because that's the kind of king he is.

  327. We don't just find out

  328. in Zechariah chapter 9

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  329. that he is going to be

  330. the humble king,

  331. but we also find out

  332. that Jesus is going to be

  333. the peaceful king.

  334. The donkey is not just

  335. a sign of Jesus' humility,

  336. but also a sign of peace.

  337. If you look again

  338. at Zechariah chapter 9,

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  339. page 3 of your worship guide,

  340. we see in verse 10

  341. he is going to end war

  342. and bring peace.

  343. I will cut off the chariot

  344. from Ephraim

  345. and the war horse

  346. from Jerusalem.

  347. The battle bow

  348. shall be cut off

  349. and he shall speak

  350. peace to the nations.

  351. His rule shall be

  352. from sea to sea

  353. and from the river

  354. to the ends

  355. of the earth.

  356. Jesus will rule

  357. the entire world.

  358. That's what the king

  359. on the donkey

  360. is going to do.

  361. Verse 9,

  362. we're told

  363. he is righteous

  364. and having salvation.

  365. If he's righteous,

  366. it means he's going

  367. to right every wrong.

  368. There is going to be

  369. complete and total

  370. world peace

  371. and those who need

  372. to be brought to justice

  373. will be.

  374. There are all types

  375. of visions

  376. that people have today

  377. for how the world

  378. is going to be

  379. made right.

  380. We live by the values

  381. of the kingdom.

  382. We embrace the upside down

  383. nature of the kingdom

  384. because we believe

  385. in the future

  386. of the kingdom.

  387. Because we believe

  388. that Jesus is

  389. the Zechariah 9,

  390. 9 through 10 king

  391. who is actually

  392. going to speak peace

  393. to all the nations.

  394. The one who is going

  395. to rule over

  396. the entire world.

  397. The one who is righteous

  398. and has salvation

  399. and so he's going

  400. to be able

  401. to right every wrong

  402. and wipe away

  403. every tear.

  404. It's because we know

  405. and embrace

  406. and believe

  407. in that future

  408. that future kingdom

  409. that's coming

  410. because of this Jesus here

  411. that we see in this passage

  412. riding in on the donkey

  413. that we live

  414. according to the kingdom

  415. right now.

  416. He is the peaceful kingdom.

  417. The peaceful king.

  418. Imagine for a second

  419. if this vision

  420. were not true.

  421. It would not simply

  422. be zeroed out.

  423. In fact,

  424. the human heart

  425. has this longing

  426. within it

  427. to see the world

  428. made right.

  429. The option

  430. is not Jesus

  431. returning or nothing.

  432. The option

  433. is not Jesus

  434. bringing peace

  435. to the nations

  436. or nothing.

  437. The option

  438. is Jesus

  439. bringing peace

  440. or someone else

  441. bringing peace.

  442. We cannot escape

  443. visions of a world

  444. with restored justice.

  445. We cannot escape

  446. narratives that tell us

  447. if we do X, Y, or Z

  448. finally everything

  449. will be made right.

  450. The only question

  451. for us

  452. is which vision

  453. we will choose.

  454. There are politicians

  455. and activists

  456. who would present you

  457. with all sorts of paths

  458. as their vision

  459. to the way

  460. to heal the world.

  461. The only problem

  462. is this

  463. that outside of Jesus

  464. justice is up to us

  465. goodness is within us.

  466. justice is up to us

  467. goodness

  468. is within us.

  469. If Jesus

  470. is not going to

  471. speak peace

  472. to the nations

  473. then we will

  474. and must.

  475. In other words

  476. if we lose

  477. this vision

  478. of Jesus

  479. we will

  480. replace it

  481. with a vision

  482. that leaves

  483. bodies in its wake.

  484. because the visions

  485. that the world

  486. gives us

  487. are visions

  488. in which

  489. we are

  490. the good guys.

  491. And so these

  492. world views

  493. always lead

  494. to injustice

  495. and oppression.

  496. They have to

  497. because if you believe

  498. the problem

  499. is always outside

  500. of you

  501. then there is

  502. a culprit

  503. that you have

  504. to deal with

  505. and you never

  506. face your own

  507. failings

  508. and sin.

  509. So Jesus

  510. here presents

  511. a vision

  512. that is more

  513. realistic

  514. more just

  515. more peaceful

  516. of all of these

  517. visions.

  518. Jesus is the only

  519. one who sacrifices

  520. himself

  521. to save his

  522. enemies.

  523. He is the only

  524. one who

  525. cleans the

  526. bathrooms

  527. of the people

  528. who hate him.

  529. Jesus is the only

  530. one who is going

  531. to be able

  532. to take us

  533. back to Eden.

  534. The only one

  535. that allows us

  536. to be human

  537. and recognize

  538. we're not

  539. strong enough

  540. we're not

  541. good enough

  542. we're not

  543. powerful enough

  544. to make this

  545. world right.

  546. That's why

  547. Jesus tells us

  548. his yoke is easy

  549. and his burden

  550. is light.

  551. Because he

  552. takes responsibility

  553. for healing

  554. the world.

  555. And so

  556. what do we do?

  557. if this

  558. vision of

  559. Jesus is true

  560. if he is

  561. the donkey

  562. king who is

  563. coming to

  564. bring peace

  565. to the nations

  566. we can wait

  567. with patience.

  568. We can wait

  569. with longing.

  570. Our hope

  571. does not hang

  572. on the thread

  573. of one

  574. political

  575. party

  576. or person

  577. or leader

  578. or technology

  579. or success

  580. of a movement.

  581. We can choose

  582. peace

  583. over violence.

  584. We can turn

  585. the other cheek

  586. because we know

  587. that Jesus

  588. one day

  589. will make

  590. all things

  591. right.

  592. It is

  593. only

  594. the king

  595. on a donkey

  596. who allows us

  597. to love

  598. our enemies.

  599. We know

  600. that he

  601. will make

  602. all things

  603. right

  604. so that we

  605. don't

  606. have to.

  607. Jesus

  608. is the

  609. great

  610. king

  611. for which

  612. our hearts

  613. long.

  614. We see

  615. him coming

  616. into Jerusalem.

  617. We look

  618. forward to him

  619. coming

  620. again

  621. to this

  622. earth.

  623. finally

  624. this

  625. humility

  626. and this

  627. peace

  628. that

  629. Jesus

  630. shows

  631. us

  632. are

  633. humility

  634. and

  635. peace

  636. that

  637. come

  638. ultimately

  639. through

  640. his

  641. death

  642. on the

  643. cross.

  644. I had a

  645. conversation

  646. recently

  647. with a

  648. woman

  649. whose

  650. husband

  651. is

  652. exploring

  653. Christianity.

  654. He is

  655. reading

  656. mere

  657. Christianity.

  658. She

  659. considers

  660. herself

  661. spiritual

  662. but not

  663. religious.

  664. I was

  665. explaining

  666. to her

  667. what it

  668. is

  669. that

  670. Christianity

  671. believes

  672. and I

  673. told her

  674. every

  675. religion

  676. every

  677. worldview

  678. believes

  679. there is

  680. something

  681. wrong

  682. with

  683. the

  684. world.

  685. Everyone

  686. agrees

  687. the

  688. world

  689. is

  690. sick.

  691. You

  692. can't

  693. find

  694. someone

  695. who

  696. would

  697. deny

  698. that.

  699. So

  700. Christianity

  701. is not

  702. unique

  703. actually

  704. in that

  705. claim.

  706. It

  707. agrees

  708. with

  709. every

  710. other

  711. worldview

  712. and

  713. saying

  714. something

  715. is

  716. wrong.

  717. It

  718. disagrees

  719. though

  720. on

  721. two

  722. things.

  723. What's

  724. the

  725. problem

  726. and

  727. what's

  728. the

  729. solution?

  730. Christianity

  731. disagrees

  732. with other

  733. worldviews

  734. because

  735. it

  736. says

  737. the

  738. problem

  739. includes

  740. us.

  741. the

  742. problem

  743. is not

  744. just

  745. people

  746. out

  747. there.

  748. The

  749. problem

  750. is

  751. the

  752. person

  753. in

  754. here.

  755. The

  756. problem

  757. is so

  758. deep

  759. and so

  760. great

  761. and so

  762. severe

  763. that we

  764. cannot

  765. fix

  766. ourselves.

  767. The

  768. gospel

  769. is the

  770. news

  771. to us

  772. that we

  773. must

  774. radically

  775. change

  776. and we

  777. are

  778. incapable

  779. of

  780. changing

  781. ourselves.

  782. the

  783. second

  784. thing

  785. the

  786. gospel

  787. has

  788. that's

  789. unique

  790. comes

  791. from

  792. the

  793. first

  794. one.

  795. The

  796. problem

  797. is so

  798. great

  799. that we

  800. can't

  801. fix

  802. it.

  803. A

  804. politician

  805. is not

  806. going to

  807. be able

  808. to heal

  809. the

  810. world.

  811. A

  812. movement

  813. is not

  814. going to

  815. be able

  816. to heal

  817. the

  818. world.

  819. We

  820. need

  821. someone

  822. much

  823. greater,

  824. much

  825. more

  826. powerful.

  827. Now

  828. we

  829. could

  830. long

  831. for,

  832. we

  833. could

  834. want

  835. a

  836. king

  837. on

  838. a

  839. war

  840. horse.

  841. There's

  842. only

  843. one

  844. problem

  845. with

  846. that.

  847. If

  848. a

  849. king

  850. came

  851. on

  852. a

  853. war

  854. horse,

  855. he

  856. would

  857. bring

  858. peace,

  859. he

  860. would

  861. fix

  862. the

  863. world,

  864. but

  865. he

  866. would

  867. crush

  868. us

  869. because

  870. we

  871. are

  872. part

  873. of

  874. the

  875. problem.

  876. And

  877. so we

  878. need,

  879. we

  880. must

  881. have

  882. the

  883. king

  884. on

  885. the

  886. donkey,

  887. the

  888. king

  889. who

  890. brings

  891. peace

  892. by

  893. taking

  894. the

  895. punishment

  896. that

  897. we

  898. deserve.

  899. We

  900. need

  901. the

  902. king

  903. who

  904. comes

  905. and

  906. dies

  907. the

  908. death

  909. that

  910. we

  911. deserve

  912. to

  913. take

  914. the

  915. punishment

  916. that

  917. should

  918. have

  919. fallen

  920. on

  921. us.

  922. That's

  923. the

  924. only

  925. way

  926. we

  927. get

  928. to

  929. have

  930. healing

  931. on

  932. the

  933. one

  934. hand

  935. and

  936. still

  937. be

  938. breathing

  939. and

  940. alive

  941. on

  942. the

  943. other.

  944. It

  945. is

  946. the

  947. king

  948. who

  949. rides

  950. in

  951. with

  952. humility

  953. in

  954. order

  955. to

  956. bring

  957. peace

  958. by

  959. bringing

  960. justice

  961. and

  962. taking

  963. it

  964. on

  965. to

  966. himself.

  967. In

  968. other

  969. words,

  970. Jesus

  971. needed

  972. to be

  973. both

  974. God

  975. and

  976. on

  977. a

  978. donkey

  979. to

  980. bring

  981. justice

  982. by

  983. receiving

  984. punishment

  985. rather

  986. than

  987. doling

  988. it

  989. out.

  990. Righteous

  991. in having

  992. salvation

  993. is he,

  994. the

  995. humble

  996. king

  997. dies

  998. for his

  999. people

  1000. so that

  1001. his

  1002. death

  1003. can bring

  1004. peace.

  1005. Now,

  1006. I told you

  1007. we would not

  1008. be able to

  1009. handle a

  1010. king on a

  1011. war horse

  1012. because he

  1013. would bring

  1014. peace but

  1015. crush us.

  1016. the reality

  1017. is that

  1018. since Jesus

  1019. has come

  1020. as the

  1021. king on

  1022. a donkey,

  1023. he will

  1024. one day

  1025. come as

  1026. the king

  1027. on the

  1028. war horse.

  1029. Revelation

    Revelation 19 chapter mention

  1030. chapter 19

  1031. gives us

  1032. this image

  1033. of Jesus

  1034. second coming

  1035. to the

  1036. earth when

  1037. he returns

  1038. on a

  1039. horse and

  1040. tramples

  1041. his enemies

  1042. under him.

  1043. the king

  1044. who receives

  1045. punishment,

  1046. who brings

  1047. justice by

  1048. suffering for

  1049. us,

  1050. will one

  1051. day bring

  1052. full and

  1053. final justice

  1054. to this

  1055. earth.

  1056. And so

  1057. that while

  1058. they don't

  1059. know the

  1060. timetable,

  1061. they don't

  1062. understand the

  1063. details,

  1064. we can agree

  1065. with the

  1066. people in

  1067. this passage,

  1068. verse 10,

  1069. verse 9,

  1070. Hosanna,

  1071. blessed is

  1072. he who

  1073. comes in

  1074. the name

  1075. of the

  1076. Lord.

  1077. Blessed is

  1078. the coming

  1079. kingdom of

  1080. our father

  1081. David.

  1082. Hosanna in

  1083. the highest.

  1084. What's the

  1085. vision that

  1086. we need

  1087. for Jesus

  1088. to be more

  1089. beautiful and

  1090. more glorious

  1091. than everything

  1092. else?

  1093. What is the

  1094. upside down

  1095. kingdom with

  1096. the upside

  1097. down king?

  1098. It is the

  1099. king who is

  1100. with us.

  1101. And the

  1102. king who

  1103. brings peace.

  1104. And so we

  1105. look to him

  1106. for healing

  1107. and justice

  1108. rather than

  1109. looking to

  1110. ourselves.

  1111. That's why we

  1112. serve him,

  1113. worship him,

  1114. love him,

  1115. follow him,

  1116. obey him.

  1117. Let's pray.

  1118. Our father

  1119. in heaven,

  1120. we praise

  1121. you and

  1122. thank you

  1123. that in

  1124. Jesus'

  1125. first coming,

  1126. he didn't

  1127. come on

  1128. a war

  1129. horse.

  1130. Because we

  1131. know that

  1132. if he

  1133. did,

  1134. we would

  1135. be crushed.

  1136. We thank

  1137. you instead

  1138. that he

  1139. came to

  1140. receive the

  1141. punishment that

  1142. we deserve.

  1143. We ask

  1144. that you

  1145. would grow

  1146. our vision

  1147. of Jesus,

  1148. our love

  1149. for him,

  1150. and our

  1151. longing for

  1152. his kingdom,

  1153. that we

  1154. would be

  1155. moved,

  1156. not by

  1157. right or

  1158. duty,

  1159. but by a

  1160. vision of

  1161. his peerless

  1162. worth.

  1163. We ask

  1164. these things

  1165. in the mighty

  1166. name of

  1167. Jesus Christ.

  1168. Amen.
