  21. Amen. This week, we kind of had a big week as a family. We welcomed a new baby into our family.

  22. And yeah, yeah. And as we did, yep, not clapping for me. I did nothing.

  23. I did drive to the hospital. So that was a big achievement, driving to the hospital.

  24. But as I was welcoming this new baby into our family, I was reflecting on what I've done well

  25. as a parent and what I've done poorly as a parent. And I'll let you choose which column this falls in.

  26. I was reflecting on the fact that I taught my youngest or my oldest to drive before he was three.

  27. Now, before anyone gets really nervous, I taught him to drive in Alabama, where the road in front

  28. of our house wasn't paved, had very little traffic. And as I was teaching him to drive, sitting on my

  29. lap, I told him two things. Just keep it out of the ditches. Don't fall into the ditch on the right.

  30. Don't fall into the ditch on the left. You might have heard something very similar when you learned

  31. how to drive, whether that was at two or 12 or 16. Keep it in between the lines is another famous phrase.

  32. But as I was teaching him how to drive, I wanted him to focus on what was ahead

  33. and not worry about what was on the left and what was on the right.

  34. First John has that same singular focus.

  35. But when you enter into the conversation, what do you do with this thing that is sin?

  36. Oftentimes, Christians can deviate and fall and slide into the ditch on the right

  37. or slide in the ditch on the left.

  38. And John knows this. And he's saying to these Christians, hey, sin is a big deal.

  39. But don't think that you have no sin. He talked about that in 1 John.

  40. And don't think that as you slide into the ditch on the right, that sin doesn't matter at all.

  41. So as a Christian, that message is still pertinent to us today.

  42. We need to be concerned about sin.

  43. But we can't slide into either of those ditches.

  44. And as we look at the Christian life this morning, let's be mindful of those two ditches.

  45. And as we do, John's going to tell us a couple things.

  46. The first one is what Jesus does.

  47. And the other is what we do.

  48. That's not to make them equitable or even.

  49. But we do something.

  50. But Jesus does something.

  51. So first, we're going to look at what Jesus does in this passage.

  52. Let's look back at verse 1.

  53. He starts out with this phrase, my little children.

  54. Now, I'm sure nobody remembers this past summer, the last time you looked at 1 John.

  55. But John has a very different tone to start out for the first chapter of 1 John.

  56. He's kind of railing against them.

  57. He's giving them the business.

  58. And then he comes back and he says, my little children.

  59. Imagine going from yelling to speaking tenderly.

  60. Or whisper yelling is probably more accurate.

  61. To speaking very tenderly and calling them my little children.

  62. It represents a shift in his tone.

  63. Because he's addressing, if you remember, all these bad ideas that are in the church,

  64. are floating around in the day,

  65. or even had invaded some of the hearts of some of the people he's writing to.

  66. And it was this idea that sin doesn't matter.

  67. If you're a Christian, you don't have any sin at all.

  68. Now, let that sink in.

  69. If you're a Christian, you don't have any sin at all.

  70. And John says, no.

  71. That's not the case at all.

  72. I mean, can you imagine if we said that if you're a Christian,

  73. you don't have sin anymore at all?

  74. The wheels in your mind might start turning and saying,

  75. uh-oh, I'm in trouble.

  76. Because I realize, even though if I put my faith in Jesus,

  77. I'm still struggling with sin myself.

  78. So what do I do?

  79. If they're saying I shouldn't have sin anymore at all,

  80. what do I do?

  81. And then the next step is, oh yeah, man.

  82. If that's the case, I'm just so discouraged I'm going to give up.

  83. John's saying something different.

  84. He's saying this, that Jesus is not only an advocate before the Father because you do sin,

  85. but Jesus has paid the penalty for your sin,

  86. for the sin of anybody that's going to believe in him.

  87. So we're going to look at that in kind of two headings.

  88. Jesus as an advocate and Jesus as the atonement.

  89. That second part of verse one, right after my little children,

  90. he says, I'm writing these things to you so that you may not sin.

  91. Now that's even more confusing if we're saying,

  92. hey, if you're a Christian, you should flee from sin,

  93. but you're still going to have it.

  94. John's saying very clearly that Jesus is this advocate before the Father.

  95. He says that, but if anyone does sin, we have an advocate before the Father,

  96. Jesus Christ, the righteous.

  97. Jesus Christ, I think we all have a good idea of what an advocate is,

  98. but let's just review that for a second.

  99. It's a little bit more than being really, really interested in something.

  100. I can be really, really interested in astronomy.

  101. If I get out my telescope and look at the night sky,

  102. I can be really, really interested at baseball.

  103. If I follow all the baseball games in the playoffs,

  104. I can be really, really interested in dogs or Legos or Pokemon or whatever.

  105. But an advocate is somebody who has a big interest

  106. and then takes action on behalf of that interest.

  107. So Jesus is not just interested in us as people,

  108. as an academic exercise or even compassion.

  109. He takes steps for our good

  110. because he's not just simply interested in our outcome.

  111. That's why John calls him an advocate.

  112. An advocate, not just generally, but before the Father.

  113. That's not the only picture that we have of Jesus as an advocate before the Father.

  114. Listen to this.

  115. Paul describes Jesus as an advocate interceding for us in Romans 8.

  116. He says this,

  117. Who will bring a charge against God's elect?

  118. God is the one who justifies and asks again,

  119. Who shall condemn the Christian?

  120. It is Christ Jesus.

  121. It is he who died, yes, rather raised,

  122. who is at the right hand of God the Father,

  123. who also intercedes for us.

  124. So here we have this picture of a courtroom,

  125. interceding on behalf of the person that's the defendant.

  126. The charge is coming against that person,

  127. and he's interceding before someone who's an authority.

  128. That's not the only picture we have of Jesus as an advocate.

  129. Think of Hebrews.

  130. It's Jesus who's interceding,

  131. bringing the cares and concerns of his people before the Father.

  132. That's who Jesus is,

  133. and that's what he does on our behalf.

  134. He's an advocate interceding for us.

  135. But why does he do that?

  136. How does he have standing to intercede before the Father for us?

  137. It's because he is the atonement.

  138. He is the one who's doing the atoning work on our behalf.

  139. Now that's just a really fancy word,

  140. and John uses an even fancier word, propitiation,

  141. for canceling the debt of our sin.

  142. Look in verse 2 with me.

  143. He is the propitiation for our sins,

  144. and not for ours only,

  145. but also for the sins of the world.

  146. He has canceled the debt for our sin.

  147. He has paid it with his own blood

  148. by giving up his life,

  149. the righteous for us, the unrighteous.

  150. And so that charge stands no more.

  151. That's how Jesus can intercede.

  152. That's how he can advocate before the Father for us.

  153. There's a French theologian who described it this way.

  154. It's kind of wordy, but he says this.

  155. There's great force in this word, propitiation.

  156. For in a manner which cannot be expressed,

  157. God at the very time when he loved us

  158. was hostile to us

  159. until we were reconciled in Christ.

  160. Now that word is so interconnected in all of the Bible,

  161. atonement.

  162. When we hear it,

  163. it might not jog our memories.

  164. It might not cause us to have flashbacks.

  165. But for an audience like this,

  166. for people that heard this,

  167. read this,

  168. it did.

  169. And this is what it looked like.

  170. It's kind of like in those Marvel movies

  171. where you see those flashbacks,

  172. and you see the whole timeline come to fruition.

  173. And that timeline looks like this.

  174. It looks like the temple.

  175. It looks like sacrifices.

  176. All of those things

  177. are jogging the memories of these readers.

  178. It's things that were once dirty,

  179. made clean,

  180. made right before God.

  181. It's pictures of Abraham,

  182. and at the last second,

  183. not his son being sacrificed,

  184. but a lamb.

  185. It's sheep being led to the slaughter.

  186. Not because the sheep are guilty,

  187. but because of another.

  188. All the way to Christ,

  189. the one who is righteous,

  190. dying for the unrighteous.

  191. When we hear that word,

  192. that's what we should think of,

  193. because that's what the readers thought of.

  194. It's a word with baggage.

  195. It's coming in with all these other meanings,

  196. but finding their fulfillment

  197. in what Jesus has done.

  198. That's what atonement means.

  199. That's what the sacrifice,

  200. or John uses the shorthand version,

  201. of the blood,

  202. to mean all of that.

  203. Jesus.

  204. Jesus' blood means all of that.

  205. All right.

  206. There's an interesting phrase in here, though,

  207. that probably a lot of our minds

  208. go straight to in verse two.

  209. But also for the sins of the whole world.

  210. Okay.

  211. Let's buckle up.

  212. Let's put our big boy pants on

  213. as we kind of like try to figure out

  214. what's going on here.

  215. Because some people can come to this text

  216. and say,

  217. surely that means everyone at all time

  218. forever is forgiven.

  219. And it could mean that.

  220. But if you look at the context

  221. most specifically,

  222. and then more broadly what John does,

  223. we're going to try to see if that's right.

  224. Now, some have come to that text

  225. and said,

  226. hey, based on that,

  227. everyone is saved.

  228. It doesn't matter.

  229. It doesn't matter whether you have faith in Christ.

  230. It doesn't matter whether you believe the gospel.

  231. That Christ has died for that.

  232. And that is applied to you

  233. whether you believe it or not.

  234. Whether you trust in it or not.

  235. If you look at the context of what John is saying,

  236. remember, he's calling them his children.

  237. He's talking to those who have faith in Christ.

  238. He says something a little bit different than that.

  239. He's saying,

  240. even if you think,

  241. you skip down a couple chapters

  242. or even a couple verses,

  243. he's really concerned with what?

  244. Walking in holiness

  245. and believing the gospel.

  246. If he's so concerned with those things,

  247. it surely cannot mean that.

  248. John will even say later

  249. that some will not have eternal life

  250. because they do not have the Father

  251. because they deny the Son.

  252. Think about that immediate context.

  253. That if we keep his word,

  254. we walk in him,

  255. we abide in him,

  256. that wouldn't matter

  257. if we took the former.

  258. So what is John saying?

  259. John is saying this,

  260. that it matters if you have faith in Jesus,

  261. but it doesn't matter what you look like,

  262. where you come from.

  263. It doesn't matter if you're a Jew or Gentile,

  264. male, female, or a child.

  265. All types of people can come to him.

  266. All types of people.

  267. Jew or Greek.

  268. The blood of Christ is for you.

  269. The blood of Christ is for Rahab and Abraham.

  270. It's for the judges,

  271. even the really bad judges.

  272. The blood of Christ is for them.

  273. There's power in the blood

  274. for the mighty kings and peasant girls,

  275. for fishermen,

  276. for those that would walk with Jesus

  277. and those of us that come after him.

  278. The blood is there for all of them.

  279. It means the whole world,

  280. all kinds of people during all times

  281. can come to Christ.

  282. The gospel is not just for them

  283. and it's not just for us.

  284. It's for all kinds of people.

  285. That's what he means.

  286. That's a good reminder for us

  287. that the gospel is not just for us

  288. at Shine Mountain.

  289. It's not for us just in the springs.

  290. It's not just for those of us

  291. that are Americans.

  292. It's not even for those of us

  293. who have good theology

  294. and think all the right things.

  295. The gospel is for all people.

  296. The power is not in our right thinking,

  297. in our right living.

  298. The power is in what Christ has done

  299. and it applies to all of us

  300. at all times.

  301. That's a good reminder to us,

  302. especially as Presbyterians,

  303. because we can sometimes think,

  304. if I think this way,

  305. even if it is biblical,

  306. even if it is right,

  307. that's what saves me.

  308. No.

  309. Christ is what saves you

  310. because you don't bring anything

  311. to the table

  312. except your own sin.

  313. That's what John is talking about.

  314. We are pardoned

  315. by blood that does not discriminate.

  316. We are pardoned

  317. by blood

  318. that is bought.

  319. We are bought

  320. by Christ.

  321. We must be reminded of that.

  322. I've spent a lot of time

  323. over the last couple months

  324. in courtrooms,

  325. which is an interesting comparison

  326. because I'm not a lawyer.

  327. I don't know if you are,

  328. but I've seen

  329. some TV shows about lawyers.

  330. And the thing

  331. that makes lawyers powerful

  332. is not what they look like,

  333. although that can be a factor,

  334. but I've spent a lot of time

  335. with some people

  336. that I work with

  337. in courtrooms.

  338. And as I have,

  339. I've gotten to watch

  340. different lawyers

  341. and their different tactics.

  342. What happens

  343. at different kind of hearing?

  344. I'm not even going to act

  345. like I know everything

  346. that happens,

  347. but it's fascinating nonetheless,

  348. especially when you come

  349. to this idea in Scripture

  350. that Jesus is interceding

  351. before a judge.

  352. on our behalf.

  353. And the most interesting one

  354. was when a man

  355. who was in an orange jumpsuit,

  356. so clearly not a lawyer,

  357. interceded on his own behalf.

  358. And he was powerful,

  359. not because he was wearing

  360. the orange Crocs

  361. and orange jumpsuit,

  362. and not because he was wearing

  363. a fine suit.

  364. He was powerful

  365. because of his argument.

  366. It's the same thing

  367. with Jesus here.

  368. The argument that Jesus makes

  369. is powerful

  370. before the Father

  371. because of what Jesus

  372. has done on our behalf.

  373. And we should rest in that.

  374. Because all of us

  375. face this question

  376. of what to do

  377. with our sin.

  378. If we believe

  379. the ideas

  380. that are swirling around

  381. in John's time

  382. that says,

  383. we don't sin at all,

  384. we err.

  385. If we believe

  386. some of the lies

  387. that we hear

  388. in our modern day

  389. that say,

  390. yeah, it's okay.

  391. It's okay if you sin.

  392. We err in another way.

  393. We all have to deal

  394. with our own sin,

  395. but the gospel

  396. gives us good

  397. and gracious news.

  398. It gives us confidence

  399. because we have

  400. an advocate

  401. before the Father

  402. who pleads

  403. on our behalf

  404. because of what

  405. he has done.

  406. That's what John

  407. is telling us.

  408. So what do we do

  409. in response to that?

  410. One,

  411. we should worship him.

  412. We should be thankful

  413. for what Christ has done.

  414. We should go to him

  415. again and again

  416. with our cares

  417. because our temptation

  418. is to shrink back

  419. and say,

  420. Jesus surely

  421. can't understand

  422. what I'm thinking

  423. or going through.

  424. But the irony in that

  425. is Christ has

  426. and he's come out

  427. the other side perfect,

  428. but he's still

  429. compassionate towards us.

  430. So we must worship him

  431. and go to him

  432. so that he can intercede

  433. and advocate

  434. before the Father

  435. on our behalf.

  436. What else?

  437. We should be prompted

  438. to tell others about this.

  439. If there is truly goodness

  440. in what has happened,

  441. what has been done

  442. on our behalf,

  443. we should be prompted

  444. to tell others,

  445. the people that we work with,

  446. the people in our homes,

  447. even small children,

  448. those awkward

  449. family relationships

  450. where there's a cost

  451. to be lost.

  452. Something that's surely

  453. not going to be gained

  454. by me telling others

  455. about Christ.

  456. I have to use my words.

  457. I have to point to him

  458. and say,

  459. my life is better

  460. because of Christ.

  461. Not simply that,

  462. my life has been changed

  463. that I have confidence

  464. as I walk

  465. because of what Christ has done.

  466. That should be our response

  467. to Jesus

  468. and what he has done

  469. in our lives.

  470. But what do we do?

  471. We talked about

  472. what Jesus does,

  473. but what do we do?

  474. Look with me at the text.

  475. Look at verse 3.

  476. And by this,

  477. we know that we have

  478. come to know him

  479. if we keep his commandments.

  480. Knowing him

  481. is not some secret formula

  482. or secret handshake

  483. or a secret knowledge,

  484. but it's a relationship

  485. with Christ.

  486. A relationship,

  487. and John talked about

  488. this earlier,

  489. that if we have fellowship

  490. with him,

  491. if we have fellowship

  492. with God,

  493. we know that if we have fellowship,

  494. and he kind of circles back

  495. to this idea.

  496. Thankfully,

  497. we've had some time off

  498. from 1 John

  499. because 1 John

  500. has a couple themes,

  501. and all he does

  502. is just repeat them

  503. over and over,

  504. which kind of seems boring

  505. if you think about it.

  506. But then,

  507. if you realize

  508. that as humans,

  509. how many times,

  510. even in the Gospel of Mark,

  511. have we seen the same thing

  512. over and over again,

  513. just packaged in a different way

  514. with different people?

  515. And one of those themes

  516. is having fellowship

  517. with God.

  518. And John returns

  519. to it again.

  520. He says,

  521. if we have fellowship

  522. with God,

  523. we can know that.

  524. How?

  525. If we know

  526. that we keep

  527. his commandments.

  528. It's important

  529. that we remind ourselves

  530. when we talk about this

  531. that it's not prescriptive,

  532. but it's instead descriptive.

  533. I don't know God

  534. because I keep

  535. his commandments.

  536. I know God

  537. and in response,

  538. I keep his commandments.

  539. Those might seem

  540. very similar,

  541. but they're very different.

  542. And as we approach

  543. Reformation Day,

  544. that's something

  545. that Luther reminds us of.

  546. John's not saying

  547. keep the commandments

  548. and you'll have

  549. a relationship with God.

  550. He's saying,

  551. if you have a heart

  552. that's changed

  553. by what God has done,

  554. what Christ has done

  555. on your behalf,

  556. then we will live

  557. out of that.

  558. And joyful obedience

  559. will keep his commandments.

  560. Jesus says this

  561. another way,

  562. that a tree

  563. is known

  564. by its fruit

  565. or even another.

  566. John says that

  567. obedience

  568. or somebody

  569. writing about,

  570. paraphrasing what

  571. John has said,

  572. he said,

  573. obedience contributes

  574. to our assurance

  575. that we know

  576. that we are in Christ

  577. because my heart

  578. is changed

  579. and I want to

  580. follow after him.

  581. I want to do

  582. what he loves

  583. and I want to do

  584. what he's told me

  585. to do.

  586. I don't know

  587. about you

  588. but when I hear that,

  589. when I see this

  590. in this text,

  591. I go,

  592. uh oh.

  593. What about me?

  594. Because I don't

  595. obey perfectly.

  596. What am I to do now

  597. when I see

  598. that I don't

  599. keep his commandments?

  600. Not even

  601. for a nanosecond.

  602. Does that mean

  603. I'm truly a Christian?

  604. Let's revisit

  605. something that

  606. John's told us

  607. in chapter one.

  608. He said,

  609. if you say

  610. that you have no sin,

  611. you deceive yourself.

  612. Okay,

  613. I got that part.

  614. I got sin.

  615. So,

  616. how do I know

  617. that I'm a Christian?

  618. There's evidence

  619. of knowing

  620. and loving God

  621. and desiring

  622. and having

  623. some success

  624. year after year,

  625. week after week,

  626. maybe even

  627. day after day

  628. in growing

  629. of my ability

  630. to keep the commandments,

  631. of my joyful obedience

  632. to his word.

  633. Yes,

  634. there will be mountains

  635. and valleys in that.

  636. Yes,

  637. there will be times

  638. when I fail

  639. and fail big.

  640. But,

  641. year after year,

  642. that's what it looks like.

  643. Remember,

  644. John is writing

  645. to this group

  646. of Christians

  647. that's interacting

  648. with these ideas

  649. that say,

  650. there is no sin

  651. or sin doesn't matter.

  652. And those keep coming up.

  653. They're kind of lies

  654. from the first chapter.

  655. And John

  656. re-kind of packages

  657. one of those lies

  658. here in verse four.

  659. He says,

  660. whoever says,

  661. I know him

  662. but does not

  663. keep his commandments

  664. is a liar

  665. and the truth

  666. is not in him.

  667. He says,

  668. if you have no care

  669. for bringing honor

  670. to Christ,

  671. you need to question

  672. if you actually

  673. have faith in Christ.

  674. He goes

  675. on to correct

  676. this way of thinking

  677. in verse five.

  678. He says,

  679. but whoever keeps

  680. his word

  681. in him,

  682. truly,

  683. the love of God

  684. is perfected.

  685. And by this,

  686. we may know

  687. that we are in him.

  688. He's reframing

  689. what we've already heard

  690. in verse three.

  691. He says,

  692. what does a Christian do?

  693. It looks like this.

  694. He keeps his commandments

  695. and in doing so

  696. demonstrates the love

  697. that we have for Christ.

  698. The love that we have

  699. for the gospel

  700. and that God

  701. is working in our hearts.

  702. That he is at work

  703. in our lives.

  704. Jesus says this

  705. another way.

  706. What does he say

  707. to his disciples?

  708. If you love me,

  709. keep my commandments.

  710. John's re-addressing

  711. some of these challenges

  712. that this church

  713. was facing

  714. in a number of churches.

  715. Instead of knowing God,

  716. they were saying

  717. they abided with him,

  718. that they lived in him,

  719. but they had no concern

  720. for what God

  721. has concern for.

  722. Instead,

  723. one who is a follower

  724. of Christ

  725. has a relationship

  726. with him,

  727. lives with him,

  728. loves what he loves.

  729. Today,

  730. if you love

  731. the good news of Jesus,

  732. our lives

  733. should look

  734. like what God

  735. has called us to.

  736. A concern for his commandments,

  737. a love for his word,

  738. a love for what is holy.

  739. Why?

  740. Because it brings honor

  741. to God

  742. and it shows

  743. that there's a transforming

  744. power at work.

  745. the only reason

  746. that we would love

  747. those things

  748. that are lovely to him

  749. is because we see

  750. with new eyes

  751. because of our faith

  752. in Christ.

  753. That that message

  754. has changed our heart

  755. from the inside out.

  756. It's not a rote obedience,

  757. but instead,

  758. a love for God

  759. that begins internally.

  760. That's really hard

  761. to see the difference

  762. sometimes.

  763. It might look

  764. a little different.

  765. My obedience

  766. to God's word

  767. because of a transformed life

  768. might look the same

  769. as somebody

  770. who just follows

  771. this list of rules.

  772. In Colorado Springs,

  773. every September,

  774. we have this event,

  775. the hot air balloon launch.

  776. It's pretty magical.

  777. I hate to use that word,

  778. but it's really cool.

  779. And when you see

  780. all those balloons lift off,

  781. especially at nighttime,

  782. what makes that hot air balloon

  783. different though

  784. than if I put a turkey fryer

  785. underneath a plastic bag.

  786. It has heat,

  787. has a little bit of fire

  788. sometimes,

  789. and it has something

  790. that can provide

  791. some amount of lift.

  792. Now that seems ridiculous,

  793. right?

  794. When we approach God's word,

  795. when we approach his call

  796. to obey his commandments,

  797. it can seem

  798. like those

  799. are the same thing.

  800. But in fact,

  801. the world's apart.

  802. A transformed heart

  803. that lives in obedience

  804. to the commandments

  805. because of the gospel

  806. looks fundamentally different.

  807. It feels fundamentally different

  808. internally

  809. than one that says,

  810. I'm doing these things

  811. because I'm earning

  812. the Lord's favor.

  813. We have to stay away.

  814. We have to be on guard

  815. against that.

  816. But Christ,

  817. but the Lord,

  818. nonetheless,

  819. has called us

  820. to love him

  821. and obey his commandments.

  822. And that's the challenge

  823. for us as Christians.

  824. So we are called

  825. to examine our own hearts

  826. and to see

  827. if we're following

  828. after Christ

  829. because of a transformed life?

  830. Or do I think

  831. in the deep recesses

  832. of my mind

  833. and heart

  834. that in fact,

  835. I am making myself

  836. more lovely

  837. to Christ

  838. because brothers and sisters,

  839. that can never happen.

  840. You are altogether lovely

  841. because of what Christ has done,

  842. not because

  843. of anything that you do

  844. or fail to do.

  845. We are lovely

  846. because Christ

  847. has seen us as lovely

  848. because Christ

  849. has given

  850. of his own life.

  851. So we are called

  852. to look inwardly,

  853. look in our own hearts

  854. and see

  855. if that has happened.

  856. To see if we live

  857. out of that

  858. or do we live

  859. out of just

  860. a mere obedience

  861. because we view

  862. the Lord

  863. as a taskmaster

  864. instead of

  865. a joyful father

  866. who looks on us

  867. as we are clothed

  868. with Christ.

  869. Look today

  870. at your own heart.

  871. Do I follow

  872. after Christ?

  873. Do I love him?

  874. And do I love him

  875. and do I share

  876. that love with others?

  877. Is my heart

  878. overflowing

  879. because of what

  880. he has done?

  881. Am I seeking

  882. out opportunities

  883. to advance

  884. his kingdom?

  885. Whether that's

  886. in my own home,

  887. my own neighborhood,

  888. or where I work?

  889. Sadly,

  890. too often,

  891. the answer is no.

  892. But today,

  893. look to Christ.

  894. Look

  895. to share

  896. that love

  897. with others

  898. because of what

  899. he has done

  900. for you

  901. and those around you.

  902. No matter

  903. what your life

  904. looks like,

  905. no matter

  906. where you've

  907. come from

  908. or where you're

  909. going,

  910. Christ calls

  911. you to himself

  912. and calls

  913. others to himself.

  914. Let's pray.

  915. Lord,

  916. we're thankful

  917. this day

  918. of the good news

  919. of Christ.

  920. We're thankful

  921. that if we walk

  922. in the way

  923. that you have

  924. called us,

  925. we pray

  926. that you might

  927. fit us

  928. for the task

  929. because without

  930. your spirit,

  931. without your

  932. transforming power,

  933. it's impossible.

  934. We pray

  935. that you would

  936. allow us

  937. to look

  938. in our hearts

  939. and confirm

  940. that it's true.

  941. And Father,

  942. that we would

  943. be assured

  944. of your work

  945. in our lives,

  946. that we'd be

  947. encouraged

  948. by what Christ

  949. has done.

  950. And Father,

  951. that we would

  952. be prompted

  953. to go out

  954. and share that

  955. with others.

  956. Father,

  957. we pray

  958. that as we

  959. follow Christ,

  960. that we would

  961. flee from sin

  962. and that

  963. we would

  964. be reminded

  965. that our sin

  966. is remembered

  967. no more.

  968. We pray

  969. this in Jesus'

  970. name.

  971. Amen.

  972. Let's stand

  973. as we sing

  974. our closing hymn

  975. this morning.
