  1. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  7. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We are continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark, and we've come to this point.

  10. We started last Sunday or two Sundays ago with the triumphal entry.

  11. Jesus makes His way on a Sunday into Jerusalem, and He has no longer keeping the secret about His identity.

  12. In fact, His conflict with the religious establishment is coming to a head.

  13. We saw that last time with the fact that He was being praised as the King coming into Jerusalem,

  14. and He'll continue that conflict this week with the famous passage of Him clearing the temple

  15. as He has this confrontation with the religious establishment.

  16. We're not only going to see that famous passage, though, we're also going to look at the strange passage,

  17. often misunderstood part about the fig tree that Jesus curses.

  18. And we're going to understand Jesus is using that as an illustration to deal with religion that has an outer ritual

  19. but no inner substance, religion that exploits people rather than healing them.

  20. That's the flashpoint of Jesus' confrontation with the rulers of the temple.

  21. And so it's with that, I invite you to turn with me in the Gospel of Mark.

  22. We're in chapter 11, starting with verse 12.

  23. You can turn with me in your Bible.

  24. You can turn in your phone.

  25. You can turn in your worship guide.

  26. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  27. In Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5, tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  28. He's a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  29. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 12.

  30. Verse 15.

  31. And they came to Jerusalem.

  32. And He entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple.

  33. And He overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.

  34. And He would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple.

  35. And He was teaching them and saying to them,

  36. Is it not written,

  37. My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations.

  38. But you have made it a den of robbers.

  39. Verse 18.

  40. And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy Him.

  41. For they feared Him, because all the crowd was astonished at His teaching.

  42. And when evening came, they went out of the city.

  43. I invite you to join me in prayer as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  44. Our Father in Heaven, we thank You again for giving us Your Word, for speaking to us,

  45. for not leaving us alone to figure out things by ourselves.

  46. And we ask that You would do that this morning.

  47. You'd show us Jesus and His passion, His heart, His zeal,

  48. for us to have access and intimacy with God,

  49. that You would grow our love and affection and our reverence and our awe for Him.

  50. We ask all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  51. Amen.

  52. Amen.

  53. We continue the story of Holy Week this morning with a little bit of a strange incident

  54. with Jesus encountering this fig tree that He seems so frustrated with.

  55. And it's actually not just the tree that we need to focus on,

  56. but in fact, the whole situation.

  57. All the little details in this story matter for us.

  58. And so, track closely with me as we go.

  59. Remember here that Jesus is commuting into Jerusalem from Bethany.

  60. Bethany is this suburb that's to the east.

  61. And so, they're traveling in every day along with all these other pilgrims.

  62. And it turns out as He's coming in here on Monday, verse 12,

  63. Jesus must not have eaten breakfast.

  64. So, Bethany was not apparently a bed and breakfast,

  65. but instead Jesus encounters this fig tree.

  66. Verse 13, he's hungry and he sees this chance for him to be able to eat.

  67. It's important for us to note that he sees this tree in the distance.

  68. It looks like this tree is exactly what he needs.

  69. It looks like this tree is going to offer Jesus what it desires.

  70. It is going to fill him up where he's empty.

  71. It's going to make him full where he's hungry.

  72. Why?

  73. Same verse, because Jesus sees that it is in leaf.

  74. In other words, everything looks great and attractive from a distance.

  75. And yet, Jesus is in for a great disappointment.

  76. Again, verse 13,

  77. He found nothing but leaves.

  78. And the point is this, that the tree is involved in false advertising.

  79. The tree is offering from a distance what it cannot deliver.

  80. We might say that the tree is all sizzle, no steak.

  81. The tree is all foam, no beer.

  82. The tree is all hat, no cattle.

  83. The tree is all leaves, no figs.

  84. The tree offers one thing, but the reality is very, very different.

  85. Now, some people are frustrated with verse 13 because it tells us it was not the season for figs.

  86. And so they believe that Jesus here with this tree is somehow being stupid or unfair.

  87. Yes, Jesus knows it's not the season for figs.

  88. Jesus is not an idiot.

  89. That is not, in fact, the point.

  90. Jesus is acting out an illustration for his disciples in the same way that an Old Testament prophet would act something out

  91. before God's people to help it cut home to their hearts.

  92. Jesus is trying to tell them the temple looks good, verse 13, from a distance.

  93. It looks good if you're far enough away.

  94. If you get up close, it cannot, it will not feed you.

  95. And in fact, that's the point.

  96. Verse 14, his disciples heard it.

  97. The point of all of this is that he can demonstrate and teach his disciples what is actually going on with the temple.

  98. And so what's been foreshadowed with this first episode now happens as he comes to the temple in verses 12 through 19.

  99. Jesus is prepping his disciples for the same point.

  100. The temple is involved in false advertising.

  101. The temple offers something that it cannot deliver.

  102. If you're familiar with the Old Testament, you know fundamentally the temple is about God's presence with his people.

  103. As Israel was traveling in the desert, they had the tabernacle, the precursor to the temple.

  104. And the tabernacle was in the center of God's people, and they would be camped all around it

  105. to make this point clearly for them that God's presence was in the very center of their community.

  106. The temple continues that same point as the tabernacle, but instead, this time, it is not temporary, but permanent.

  107. It's not a tent that can be moved, but a building that cannot.

  108. And so this is the place where they're supposed to meet with God and have their spiritual needs filled.

  109. This is the place for forgiveness and healing and meaning and belonging and significance.

  110. This is the place that God's people are coming to be with him.

  111. This is the place where their spiritual needs are supposed to be met.

  112. And yet Jesus here encounters something very different in verse 15.

  113. He's already done his recon, by the way.

  114. You may remember from last time, verse 11, the very end of Sunday, Jesus went to take a look around the temple.

  115. So when he comes to this fig tree, he already knows what he's setting up.

  116. He's already seen these vendors.

  117. He already knows the temple courts are being abused.

  118. And so it's not a surprise here when he comes, verse 15, and finds that there are those who are selling and buying.

  119. And he drives them out.

  120. He overturns the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.

  121. Now, many of these things that are going on in the temple are actually necessary in some way.

  122. Jesus has traveled to Jerusalem over the last few passages, much as Jews would do from around the world.

  123. This was the high holy day of Passover.

  124. And so it's actually a convenience that they're offering here.

  125. It would be great as someone coming to Jerusalem to know that you don't have to bring your pigeon with you.

  126. You can bring your money.

  127. You can buy it on the way.

  128. It's great to be able to exchange money because the temple tax would have to be paid with a Tyrian coin, which is different than Roman money.

  129. And so what they're offering here is actually in some ways necessary and important for God's people as they travel to Jerusalem.

  130. The problem is not what they're doing.

  131. The problem is the location.

  132. They have camped out the outer portion of the temple, which had one purpose.

  133. This outer portion was the only place that Gentiles, that non-Jews, could come to experience God's presence.

  134. If they were a Gentile, they could not proceed into the inner portions of the temple.

  135. And so this was a precious and sacred space for them, for it to be filled up with these folks who are selling and changing money.

  136. For those who are using it as a furrow fair is to say, we don't care about the Gentiles.

  137. We're not actually concerned with whether people can have access and fellowship and communion with God.

  138. That is not something we are worried about.

  139. And so they've lost the meaning, the importance of the entire event.

  140. Verse 16, there's something even worse going on.

  141. It's not just that these folks are selling in the space where people are supposed to access God, but they're actually using it as a traffic point.

  142. You know, sometimes when you enter a neighborhood, there'll be a sign telling you there is no outlet.

  143. You can't get anywhere from here.

  144. And yet you'll see drivers often trying to find a shortcut.

  145. Someone comes to a stoplight next to a gas station, and they'll pull into the gas station and pull around so they can make a right turn, skipping the traffic light.

  146. That's the same thing that's going on here.

  147. People are using this outer court, this place that's sacred for Gentiles to access God's presence and experience communion with him as a shortcut for their traffic.

  148. As a way to get from point A to point B much faster.

  149. And so that's why Jesus comes down so hard.

  150. That's why he's flipping over tables and driving people out.

  151. Because verse 17, he gets to the heart of the matter.

  152. Is it not written, my house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations?

  153. Those who are running the temple have missed two important fundamental things.

  154. First of all, they've missed the very purpose of the temple.

  155. They've missed the fact that it is there for relationship with God.

  156. They've missed the fact that it's there for God's people to experience God's presence.

  157. They've missed the point that it is for God's people to worship him and hear from him.

  158. And so they have all the show, they have all the trappings and none of the substance.

  159. But they've missed something else as well.

  160. They haven't just missed its purpose, they've missed God's heart.

  161. A house of prayer for all nations.

  162. They've missed what we've been told throughout the entire Old Testament,

  163. which is that the promise that was made to the Jews is ultimately meant for all the nations.

  164. They don't care about the Gentiles.

  165. They don't care about non-Jews having intimacy with God.

  166. And so ultimately they end up serving greed rather than God.

  167. They like the appearance.

  168. They don't care about the substance.

  169. They are fascinated by the outside.

  170. They are uninterested in the heart.

  171. And so we can understand Jesus' anger here.

  172. What could be worse than to treat God's presence,

  173. his love for his people, as nothing more than a commodity?

  174. What could be worse than treating access to God, fellowship with God,

  175. as a sporting event?

  176. They are vendors here to make a buck rather than those who care about God's people.

  177. Now we still have a little bit more to unpack with this fig tree.

  178. Why is it so important?

  179. Why is Jesus so offended?

  180. Why is he so frustrated by the fact that this tree has no fruit to offer him?

  181. It's very simple.

  182. It's because Jesus is hungry.

  183. Jesus is making a point here.

  184. The fig tree refuses to meet Jesus' physical needs, his physical hunger.

  185. But how much worse is it that the temple refuses to meet God's people's spiritual needs,

  186. their spiritual hunger?

  187. In other words, Jesus is filled with anger because the temple has left his people to starve.

  188. This is the place where they have communion with God, and it is blocked by vendors.

  189. The temple is supposed to be a place where people are restored and not exploited.

  190. It's supposed to be a place of reconciliation and healing and forgiveness.

  191. And here they're given a counterfeit.

  192. God's people are robbed.

  193. They take not just their money, but their opportunity for relationship with God.

  194. Remember that the Passover is the celebration of God's great deliverance of his people from Egypt.

  195. It was him bringing them out of slavery and giving them freedom.

  196. It was their first step on the way to the promised land.

  197. And so that's why pilgrims are coming from all over to be at Jerusalem for this celebration.

  198. And so we understand how bad our things are when this celebration of God's deliverance has become simply an economic event.

  199. It's one thing to withhold figs from a hungry person.

  200. It's quite another thing to withhold the very presence of God.

  201. Now, we don't have to look far in our own culture to find holidays that can become about profit rather than healing.

  202. So think with me for a minute about Valentine's Day.

  203. By the way, I'm a big fan of Valentine's Day.

  204. I have nothing against it.

  205. It's this holiday that's meant to be about expressing love and vulnerability and intimacy and self-sacrifice.

  206. And it can become just another economic extravaganza.

  207. It can become just another hallmark holiday meant to build the bottom line.

  208. And so you can imagine Jesus coming home, right?

  209. Maybe imagine him as a spouse coming to this dead and lifeless marriage.

  210. And the home is filled with roses.

  211. It's full of wonderful, expensive roses.

  212. And Jesus comes in and throws them all in the trash.

  213. And he says, look, I don't want your roses.

  214. I want your heart.

  215. This can't make up for what's lacking in this relationship.

  216. In fact, it's a slap in the face that you think you can buy your way out of the troubles of this marriage.

  217. And that's what's going on in this passage.

  218. You won't give what's truly important.

  219. You won't give your time and energy and investment.

  220. All you're willing to give is your money.

  221. You give many flowers, but your heart is somewhere else.

  222. We could say, all roses know love.

  223. That is why Jesus is so frustrated in this passage.

  224. That is why he set the stage with the illustration of the fig tree to point out how empty and fruitless and exploitative and damaging the system has become.

  225. And so as we understand all of those things, as we get a sense of Jesus' frustration and his anger, there's two things simply that I want us to take from this passage.

  226. And the first is this, that it is possible to completely miss the point.

  227. It is possible to engage in ritual with no heart and not to even realize it.

  228. This is the father who is proud of the Bible studies he attends and the doctrine he knows.

  229. But he has no compassion or grace towards his spouse or children.

  230. Loves the ritual, misses the heart.

  231. It's the congregant who is proud of her service in the church and at the same time lacks the fruit of the spirit.

  232. She's busy, but there's no love, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, or self-control.

  233. Loves the appearance, misses the heart.

  234. It's the church that's proud of its ministries and its activities.

  235. And it burns through people rather than taking part in their healing.

  236. Loves the appearance, misses the heart.

  237. It's the leader who uses the manipulative tactics of the world and justifies it because he's doing God's work.

  238. Loves the appearance, misses the heart.

  239. And so the question for us in all of that is this, in all of the busyness,

  240. in all of the religious activity that we take part in,

  241. are we actually bringing others to know God?

  242. Or are we simply getting in the way?

  243. In the busyness and activity of religion, are we actually showing fruit?

  244. Are we growing in love, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, and self-control?

  245. Or are we all hat and no cattle?

  246. All leaves, no figs.

  247. Jesus here is giving us a warning and a reminder

  248. that it is possible, it is easy to have fruitless religion.

  249. It is easy and possible to be full of activity

  250. and also to simply follow the desires of our own hearts.

  251. Fruitless religion is a real and present danger.

  252. Now I told you there were two things

  253. that I want us to take from our passage.

  254. That is the first.

  255. The second is this.

  256. None of what I have said this morning

  257. matters

  258. unless we see

  259. Jesus.

  260. What is Jesus' heart

  261. and his passion here?

  262. What is it that gets Jesus fired up?

  263. What is it that drives him

  264. to turn over tables

  265. and get people out?

  266. Jesus' passion here

  267. is that you

  268. would access

  269. his presence.

  270. Jesus' anger

  271. is because

  272. his people

  273. are being starved.

  274. Jesus' action here

  275. is because

  276. God's people

  277. are hungry

  278. for God's presence

  279. and his healing

  280. and that there are men

  281. who are getting

  282. in the way.

  283. And so more than anything else

  284. we have to see

  285. Jesus' love

  286. here for these people.

  287. His love

  288. for the Gentiles.

  289. His love

  290. for those

  291. who are being blocked

  292. from God.

  293. His love

  294. for you.

  295. Jesus is passionate

  296. that his people

  297. would experience

  298. the healing

  299. and forgiveness

  300. and reconciliation

  301. the purpose

  302. and the significance

  303. that comes

  304. and only comes

  305. from his presence.

  306. He is angry

  307. on behalf

  308. of someone else.

  309. He is angry

  310. on behalf

  311. of his people.

  312. He's angry

  313. on behalf

  314. of you.

  315. Jesus'

  316. passion

  317. is that

  318. his house

  319. would be a house

  320. of prayer

  321. for all

  322. nations.

  323. What makes

  324. Jesus upset?

  325. Jesus is upset

  326. when you

  327. are blocked

  328. from him.

  329. Jesus is upset

  330. when rote

  331. and ritual

  332. religion

  333. get in the way

  334. of you

  335. experiencing

  336. the beauty

  337. and the glory

  338. of knowing

  339. his love

  340. and his forgiveness

  341. for you.

  342. He is upset

  343. when people

  344. miss out

  345. on the glory

  346. of worshiping

  347. him,

  348. singing to him

  349. and hearing

  350. from him

  351. words of life.

  352. that is

  353. what gets

  354. Jesus

  355. going.

  356. He's upset

  357. when you're

  358. kept

  359. from forgiveness

  360. and healing

  361. and meaning

  362. and wisdom

  363. and belonging.

  364. And so

  365. the same

  366. question

  367. that we've

  368. been looking

  369. at for a few

  370. weeks

  371. comes to us.

  372. Hast thou

  373. seen him,

  374. heard him,

  375. known him?

  376. is not

  377. thine

  378. a captured

  379. heart?

  380. Captivated

  381. by his

  382. beauty

  383. worthy

  384. tribute

  385. haste

  386. to bring,

  387. let his

  388. peerless

  389. worth

  390. constrain

  391. you,

  392. crown him

  393. now

  394. unrivaled

  395. king.

  396. Yes,

  397. be careful

  398. about fruitless

  399. religion.

  400. Yes,

  401. be careful

  402. about blocking

  403. people from

  404. God's presence.

  405. Yes,

  406. watch out

  407. for the

  408. way in

  409. which religion

  410. becomes

  411. about the

  412. appearance

  413. rather than

  414. the substance

  415. and,

  416. most of

  417. all,

  418. more than

  419. anything else,

  420. see Jesus'

  421. heart.

  422. Jesus has

  423. come to

  424. Jerusalem

  425. so that

  426. he can

  427. die.

  428. Jesus has

  429. come to

  430. Jerusalem

  431. so that

  432. any barrier

  433. between people

  434. and him

  435. would be

  436. broken down.

  437. Jesus has

  438. come so

  439. the temple

  440. and its

  441. sacrificial

  442. system

  443. would not

  444. be needed

  445. anymore.

  446. Jesus has

  447. come so

  448. that we

  449. every year

  450. are not

  451. making a

  452. pilgrimage

  453. to Jerusalem

  454. to be

  455. in his

  456. presence,

  457. but we

  458. can be

  459. in his

  460. presence

  461. now fully

  462. and finally

  463. because of

  464. the work

  465. of Jesus

  466. Christ.

  467. Jesus

  468. came so

  469. that his

  470. people

  471. could be

  472. in his

  473. presence.

  474. I can

  475. tell you

  476. all sorts

  477. of things

  478. about the

  479. abuse of

  480. religious

  481. systems

  482. and none

  483. of it

  484. matters if

  485. we don't

  486. see this

  487. Jesus

  488. and grow

  489. in our

  490. love

  491. for him.

  492. Captivated

  493. by his

  494. beauty.

  495. See the

  496. beauty of

  497. Jesus in

  498. his love.

  499. See the

  500. beauty of

  501. Jesus in

  502. his anger.

  503. There are

  504. stories that

  505. have been

  506. told of

  507. folks who

  508. have

  509. experienced

  510. horrific

  511. things

  512. and there's

  513. many things

  514. that are

  515. upsetting

  516. about that,

  517. many things

  518. that are

  519. haunting and

  520. traumatic.

  521. One of the

  522. things that

  523. haunts people

  524. in those

  525. situations is

  526. this.

  527. No one

  528. was angry

  529. for me.

  530. No one

  531. was upset

  532. for me.

  533. My parents

  534. or my spouse

  535. or my friends

  536. didn't fight

  537. for me

  538. in that.

  539. More than

  540. anything else

  541. in this

  542. passage, I

  543. want you to

  544. see this.

  545. Jesus angry

  546. for you.

  547. Jesus angry

  548. for anything

  549. that blocks

  550. you from

  551. his presence.

  552. Jesus angry

  553. for those

  554. who keep

  555. you from

  556. him.

  557. that is

  558. his beauty

  559. and his

  560. glory.

  561. Now Jesus

  562. gives a

  563. curse here

  564. in verse

  565. 14.

  566. It's a

  567. curse that's

  568. for the

  569. tree.

  570. Remember I

  571. told you all

  572. the details

  573. matter and

  574. there's a

  575. parallel for

  576. the temple

  577. as well.

  578. The temple

  579. in a sense

  580. is a lame

  581. duck at

  582. this point.

  583. It is

  584. almost

  585. obsolete

  586. because the

  587. temple is

  588. doing a

  589. performing a

  590. function that

  591. will no

  592. longer be

  593. needed after

  594. Jesus'

  595. death.

  596. When we

  597. get to

  598. Mark

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  599. chapter 14

  600. and Jesus

  601. dies, one

  602. of the things

  603. we're going

  604. to see is

  605. that the

  606. inner curtain

  607. within the

  608. temple that

  609. protects people

  610. from the

  611. very greatest

  612. and intense

  613. point of

  614. God's presence

  615. is going to

  616. be ripped

  617. from top

  618. to bottom

  619. in half

  620. because there

  621. is no

  622. longer a

  623. need for

  624. the temple

  625. to mediate

  626. God's presence

  627. with his

  628. people because

  629. Jesus has

  630. come to be

  631. Emmanuel,

  632. God with

  633. us.

  634. Jesus is

  635. God's

  636. presence,

  637. not the

  638. temple.

  639. Jesus is

  640. going to

  641. make it

  642. no longer

  643. necessary.

  644. What he

  645. does in

  646. part here

  647. in clearing

  648. out this

  649. narthex for

  650. God's people

  651. to access

  652. him, he's

  653. going to

  654. do in

  655. full in

  656. the cross

  657. because when

  658. he's on

  659. the cross

  660. he is going

  661. to die

  662. the death

  663. that we

  664. deserve

  665. even though

  666. he lived

  667. the life

  668. that we

  669. should have.

  670. He's going

  671. to take

  672. the punishment

  673. we deserve

  674. on him

  675. so that

  676. we can

  677. have

  678. access

  679. to

  680. God.

  681. Not as

  682. pilgrims

  683. making our

  684. way to

  685. Jerusalem

  686. but as

  687. those who

  688. can pray

  689. anytime,

  690. anywhere.

  691. Jesus is

  692. so passionate

  693. that you

  694. have fellowship

  695. with him,

  696. that you

  697. have access

  698. to him

  699. that he

  700. dies.

  701. That is

  702. his ultimate

  703. clearing of

  704. the temple.

  705. In John

    John 4 chapter mention

  706. chapter 4

  707. Jesus meets

  708. a Samaritan

  709. woman.

  710. There's lots

  711. of things

  712. that happen

  713. there and

  714. they talk

  715. about but

  716. one of the

  717. things they

  718. talk about

  719. is this,

  720. she asks

  721. him to

  722. resolve this

  723. debate for

  724. her about

  725. where the

  726. appropriate

  727. place of

  728. worship is.

  729. Are we

  730. supposed to

  731. worship in

  732. Jerusalem or

  733. are we

  734. supposed to

  735. worship here

  736. in Samaria?

  737. And Jesus

  738. says,

  739. look,

  740. that's not

  741. going to be

  742. even an

  743. issue soon.

  744. The time

  745. is coming

  746. when you're

  747. not going to

  748. worship here

  749. or there,

  750. you're going

  751. to worship

  752. in spirit

  753. and in

  754. truth.

  755. Meaning

  756. that this

  757. system is

  758. coming to

  759. the end,

  760. the temple

  761. is obsolete

  762. because of

  763. me and

  764. my work,

  765. you will

  766. come to

  767. God in

  768. my name

  769. wherever

  770. and whenever

  771. you need

  772. to.

  773. Mark

    Mark 11:17

  774. chapter 11

  775. verse 17

  776. my house

  777. shall be

  778. called a

  779. house of

  780. prayer for

  781. all the

  782. nations.

  783. And now

  784. we look not

  785. to the

  786. temple but

  787. to Jesus

  788. himself who

  789. is God's

  790. presence.

  791. That's why

  792. we pray

  793. in Jesus

  794. name.

  795. And so

  796. let's do

  797. that now.

  798. Our

  799. Father in

  800. heaven,

  801. we
