  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy, truly, to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here,

  4. and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community,

  6. and as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  7. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection,

  11. and as we come to this passage this morning, there's really no two ways about it.

  12. We have a difficult text of Scripture before us.

  13. It's difficult to understand. It's difficult to hear.

  14. It's hard intellectually because it appears, at least on first reading,

  15. that somehow we can control God.

  16. We can have supernatural powers if simply we have enough faith.

  17. And it's hard spiritually because as we come to this passage,

  18. it has the potential to bring us maybe guilt or shame or cynicism

  19. as we look at things that we've cried out to God for, we've prayed earnestly for,

  20. and God has chosen not to grant that.

  21. We wonder if something was wrong with us if we didn't just have enough faith,

  22. and so maybe we found ourselves in a place of resignation or cynicism.

  23. So as we come to Jesus' teaching here, I say sometimes, as I do now,

  24. I'm going to say something, not everything,

  25. as we try to unravel the knots of this passage to both satisfy our minds,

  26. to understand it, and also to address our hearts as we face the challenges

  27. of just living as Christians, crying out to God,

  28. and feeling like at times He doesn't hear or answer.

  29. And so it's with those challenges that we're going to turn now to God's Word.

  30. I invite you to turn with me to Mark chapter 11.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  31. We're going to start at verse 20, and remember that this is God's Word.

  32. God tells us that His Word is a lamp to our feet, and it's a light to our path,

  33. which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  34. but instead He's given us His Word to show us the way to go.

  35. And so that's why we read together now, starting at verse 20.

  36. As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.

  37. And Peter remembered and said to Him,

  38. Rabbi, look, the fig tree that you cursed has withered.

  39. And Jesus answered them,

  40. Have faith in God.

  41. Truly I say to you,

  42. whoever says to this mountain,

  43. be taken up and thrown into the sea,

  44. and does not doubt in his heart,

  45. but believes that what he says will come to pass,

  46. it will be done for him.

  47. Verse 24,

  48. Therefore I tell you,

  49. whatever you ask in prayer,

  50. believe that you have received it,

  51. and it will be yours.

  52. And whenever you stand praying,

  53. forgive,

  54. if you have anything against anyone,

  55. so that your Father also,

  56. who is in heaven,

  57. may forgive you

  58. your trespasses.

  59. I invite you to pray with me as we come

  60. to this portion of God's Word.

  61. Our Father in heaven,

  62. we do praise you

  63. and thank you again this morning

  64. that you teach us and instruct us,

  65. that you challenge us

  66. and you encourage us with your Word.

  67. We ask that you would do that this morning.

  68. You would especially help us

  69. to understand clearly

  70. what Jesus is teaching in this passage,

  71. and that you would encourage us

  72. to be bold in our prayers,

  73. and comfort us

  74. and sustain us

  75. in the prayers

  76. that we have prayed for

  77. months and years

  78. and perhaps decades,

  79. that you would stir up our faith,

  80. that we would see Jesus

  81. in his beauty

  82. and his glory,

  83. and that our love for him

  84. would grow more and more,

  85. that you would change us,

  86. that we would look like him.

  87. We thank you

  88. that even though

  89. we haven't earned these things

  90. and we don't deserve them,

  91. we can ask them with confidence

  92. because we ask them in Jesus' name.

  93. Amen.

  94. As we come to this passage,

  95. we're picking up

  96. where we left off last week.

  97. You'll remember

  98. that we had first

  99. this cursing of the fig tree

  100. by Jesus,

  101. which was an illustration

  102. that he was acting out,

  103. that he was living out,

  104. so that he could tell his disciples

  105. what was actually going on

  106. with the temple,

  107. that the temple was

  108. all leaves and no fig.

  109. It was all external appearances,

  110. but no substance.

  111. As we move on

  112. from that episode,

  113. Jesus cleaning out

  114. of the temple,

  115. it appears to be important

  116. to Mark to tell us

  117. once again

  118. about this fig tree.

  119. And so we see

  120. in verse 20

  121. what we didn't learn

  122. last week,

  123. which is the totality

  124. of its destruction.

  125. It's not just

  126. that the fig tree

  127. has been destroyed,

  128. but it has been destroyed

  129. away,

  130. all the way

  131. to the roots.

  132. Jesus has taken here

  133. a scorched earth policy

  134. towards the fig tree,

  135. that this destruction here

  136. is total and utter

  137. and complete.

  138. And so Peter represents

  139. the surprise of the disciples

  140. in verse 21.

  141. He says,

  142. look, Rabbi,

  143. the fig tree

  144. that you cursed

  145. has withered,

  146. which reminds us

  147. that it wasn't clear

  148. what the conclusion

  149. would be

  150. in the previous passage.

  151. There's all sorts of ways

  152. this could have played out

  153. when Jesus says,

  154. may you never bear figs again.

  155. And here it plays out

  156. in an incredibly dramatic

  157. and severe way.

  158. It is complete

  159. and quick

  160. and total,

  161. more than Peter

  162. perhaps expected.

  163. That's important

  164. for us to understand

  165. as we head

  166. into this next story

  167. because what Jesus

  168. says next

  169. assumes Peter's

  170. surprise here.

  171. Verses 22 and 23,

  172. Jesus is essentially

  173. saying,

  174. oh, you think

  175. that's a big deal?

  176. You think it's surprising

  177. and powerful

  178. to wither

  179. a fig tree away

  180. all to its roots?

  181. Look up.

  182. You see that mountain

  183. over there?

  184. If you have enough faith,

  185. you can throw that

  186. into the sea.

  187. In other words,

  188. making a fig tree

  189. wither to its roots

  190. isn't anything.

  191. Disciples,

  192. you all ain't seen

  193. nothing yet.

  194. If you are impressed

  195. by that,

  196. you are too easily pleased.

  197. There is so much

  198. more power

  199. than you realize.

  200. There is something

  201. greater even

  202. than what you've seen.

  203. Now when Jesus

  204. in verse 23

  205. says,

  206. look at this mountain,

  207. that helps us understand

  208. that he's talking about

  209. not just mountains

  210. in general

  211. but a specific mountain.

  212. There's disagreement

  213. about whether

  214. he's referring here

  215. to the Mount of Olives

  216. that he crosses over

  217. as he approaches Jerusalem

  218. or if he's referring

  219. to the Temple Mount

  220. where the Temple itself

  221. stands.

  222. Regardless,

  223. there is a little-known

  224. historical fact

  225. that's important

  226. for us to know

  227. as we come to this passage

  228. to be able

  229. to understand it.

  230. And that little-known

  231. fact is this.

  232. Neither the Temple Mount

  233. nor the Mount of Olives,

  234. believe it or not,

  235. have ever been cast

  236. into the sea.

  237. That's actually

  238. never happened.

  239. And it's important

  240. for me to point that out

  241. because it highlights

  242. the first thing

  243. we need to understand

  244. about this passage

  245. which is the form

  246. of Jesus' teaching here.

  247. When Jesus tells them,

  248. hey, if you have enough faith,

  249. you can throw a mountain

  250. into the sea,

  251. Jesus is using

  252. what we might call

  253. an overstatement.

  254. Some have referred to it

  255. as an exaggeration

  256. or a hyperbole

  257. or a proverbial saying.

  258. And unless you think,

  259. in case you think

  260. I'm making this up

  261. to take a hard passage

  262. and make it easier,

  263. remember we've already

  264. seen this.

  265. Mark 9, verses 43-47,

    Mark 9:43–47

  266. Jesus says,

  267. hey, it's a good idea

  268. to cut off your hand,

  269. cut off your foot,

  270. tear out your eye.

  271. None of you, however,

  272. here have cut off

  273. your hands, your feet,

  274. or torn out your eyes

  275. as far as I can tell.

  276. And so you're in agreement.

  277. There's times when Jesus

  278. uses an exaggeration

  279. to make a point.

  280. The same thing is true

  281. in Luke 12.

  282. You have a passage

  283. about this on the back

  284. of your worship guide.

  285. Or Luke 14, excuse me.

  286. Jesus says,

  287. you should hate your family.

  288. And yet,

  289. so many of you

  290. are sitting here

  291. with your families

  292. because you know, right,

  293. Jesus is making

  294. an overstatement.

  295. He is saying something

  296. extreme to make a point.

  297. And the point here

  298. is this,

  299. that prayer is very powerful.

  300. But it's more impactful,

  301. it's more memorable

  302. for Jesus to say,

  303. hey,

  304. prayer's so powerful

  305. you can take mountains

  306. and cast them

  307. into the sea

  308. than to say,

  309. oh, you think that's big?

  310. Well, prayer's a really big deal.

  311. That might go over

  312. the disciples' heads,

  313. but here,

  314. Jesus,

  315. as the master teacher,

  316. gives them this image

  317. to help them

  318. remember forever

  319. how important it is

  320. that they would pray.

  321. Jesus is simply

  322. telling them this,

  323. prayer can accomplish

  324. more than you imagine.

  325. Prayer can make

  326. the impossible possible.

  327. And so that helps us

  328. escape the trap

  329. that's been used

  330. by those who have

  331. abused this passage

  332. that somehow

  333. we have to take it

  334. woodenly

  335. or literalistically

  336. that if we just

  337. have enough faith,

  338. God will do anything

  339. for us.

  340. God is somehow

  341. this genie in the bottle

  342. and if our faith

  343. can rub that bottle

  344. just the right way,

  345. then we will have

  346. the superpower

  347. to do whatever

  348. we want in this world.

  349. And yet that is not

  350. what Jesus is teaching here.

  351. He is simply telling them,

  352. look,

  353. what you've seen here

  354. is nothing compared

  355. to the power

  356. that is available

  357. to you

  358. through prayer.

  359. And so that's the first thing

  360. we need to understand

  361. about Jesus' teaching here

  362. is the form

  363. of his teaching.

  364. That in this,

  365. he is using

  366. this overstatement,

  367. this hyperbole,

  368. this proverbial saying.

  369. The second thing

  370. we need to understand

  371. to make sense

  372. of this teaching

  373. from Jesus

  374. is the context

  375. of his teaching.

  376. That he's teaching this

  377. in the context

  378. of the overthrow

  379. of evil,

  380. the clearing

  381. of the temple

  382. which prevents

  383. God's people

  384. from actually

  385. accessing God's presence.

  386. The point of confusion

  387. here for those

  388. who abuse this passage

  389. or misunderstand it

  390. would be in verse 24

  391. when Jesus says,

  392. whatever you ask

  393. in prayer.

  394. And the confusion

  395. would be

  396. if we make the word

  397. whatever

  398. mean anything

  399. or everything.

  400. And whatever

  401. does not mean

  402. anything or everything

  403. and so I want you

  404. to think about it

  405. this way.

  406. You invite me

  407. to your house

  408. for dinner

  409. and I come over

  410. and being

  411. the housebroken,

  412. well-trained guest

  413. that I am

  414. with just really

  415. clear boundaries,

  416. as soon as I come

  417. to your house,

  418. I make a beeline

  419. for your freezer.

  420. And I pull open

  421. the freezer door

  422. and I say,

  423. what do we have

  424. in here?

  425. And there it is,

  426. it's glowing

  427. and bright

  428. in your freezer,

  429. I see that you

  430. have the quart

  431. of Blue Bell

  432. ice cream.

  433. And so I say,

  434. yes,

  435. this is what

  436. I've hoped for

  437. and longed for,

  438. that is what

  439. I want.

  440. We haven't eaten

  441. dinner yet.

  442. And so what do

  443. you say to me

  444. at that point?

  445. You say,

  446. Matthew,

  447. you can have

  448. whatever you want.

  449. What does that

  450. not mean?

  451. It does not mean

  452. that you have

  453. invited me

  454. to go upstairs

  455. in your house

  456. and take all

  457. your guns

  458. and all your jewelry.

  459. Whatever

  460. does not mean

  461. anything or everything.

  462. When you say,

  463. Matthew,

  464. you can have

  465. whatever you want.

  466. What you mean is

  467. you can have

  468. whatever you want

  469. in the context,

  470. in the realm,

  471. in the sphere

  472. of the freezer.

  473. And if I'm lucky,

  474. in the sphere

  475. of the refrigerator.

  476. There's a context

  477. to that statement.

  478. When you say whatever,

  479. you don't mean

  480. anything in the world.

  481. You don't mean

  482. everything in your house.

  483. You mean

  484. whatever you need

  485. to eat

  486. from this

  487. refrigerated instrument.

  488. Okay,

  489. there's a realm,

  490. there's a context,

  491. there's a boundary,

  492. there's a limit

  493. on your statement there.

  494. I might also

  495. never be invited

  496. for dinner again.

  497. Same thing

  498. is going on here

  499. with Jesus

  500. is that there is

  501. a context

  502. and a realm.

  503. When Jesus says

  504. in verse 24,

  505. whatever you ask

  506. in prayer,

  507. he is speaking

  508. in the context

  509. about the advancing

  510. of God's kingdom,

  511. the destruction

  512. of evil,

  513. and the erasing

  514. of what separates

  515. God's people

  516. from God's presence.

  517. We are not

  518. in the realm

  519. of the refrigerator,

  520. we're in the realm

  521. of the clearing

  522. of the temple

  523. that has just happened

  524. and the withering

  525. of the fig tree.

  526. The withering

  527. of the fig tree

  528. is destroying

  529. those things

  530. that have spiritual

  531. appearance

  532. but no spiritual

  533. substance.

  534. Whatever you ask

  535. in prayer

  536. in that genre,

  537. whatever you ask

  538. in prayer

  539. for the advancing

  540. of God's kingdom,

  541. whatever you ask

  542. in prayer

  543. for the defeat

  544. of evil

  545. and the overthrowing

  546. of spiritual

  547. strongholds.

  548. One pastor

  549. puts it this way,

  550. we can move mountains

  551. in our prayers,

  552. the mountain

  553. we are moving

  554. is the overthrow

  555. of a broken world

  556. and the coming

  557. of the kingdom

  558. of God.

  559. Which means

  560. that this morning

  561. you have already prayed

  562. that God would cast

  563. mountains into the sea

  564. because that's exactly

  565. what we pray for

  566. in the Lord's prayer.

  567. we come together

  568. and say,

  569. hey, may your kingdom

  570. come, your will be done

  571. on earth as it is

  572. in heaven.

  573. For God's kingdom

  574. to come

  575. and his will to be done

  576. on earth as it is

  577. in heaven

  578. is much more difficult

  579. than shriveling

  580. a fig tree

  581. to its roots.

  582. It is in fact

  583. much more challenging

  584. than casting a mountain

  585. into the sea.

  586. It is something

  587. that only happens

  588. if God's supernatural

  589. power is at work

  590. in the world.

  591. And so you might

  592. be thinking,

  593. oh man,

  594. that's all this passage

  595. means?

  596. Like, we're downplaying it.

  597. It just means

  598. the Lord's prayer.

  599. No, I don't say this

  600. to downplay this passage

  601. but to highlight

  602. and emphasize

  603. what a radical

  604. act of faith

  605. it actually is

  606. when we pray

  607. the Lord's prayer

  608. together.

  609. Remember verse 25

  610. of this passage.

  611. Jesus says,

  612. hey, by the way,

  613. when you're praying,

  614. you also need to forgive.

  615. And if you're honest,

  616. you know how hard

  617. it is to forgive

  618. someone who has

  619. truly hurt you.

  620. It is harder

  621. to do that

  622. than to cast

  623. a mountain

  624. into the sea.

  625. We are asking God

  626. when we pray

  627. for his kingdom

  628. to come

  629. on earth

  630. as it is in heaven

  631. to do what

  632. no earthly government

  633. has ever been able

  634. to accomplish.

  635. Dynamite

  636. can destroy

  637. mountains.

  638. We have the technology

  639. right now

  640. to cast

  641. mountains

  642. into the sea.

  643. We do not have

  644. the technology

  645. to move

  646. the human heart.

  647. We do not have

  648. the technology

  649. to break

  650. the forces of evil

  651. once and for all.

  652. We do not have

  653. the technology

  654. necessary

  655. to restore

  656. dignity and worth

  657. to people

  658. who are on the margins.

  659. We do not have

  660. the technology

  661. to rescue

  662. the poor

  663. and bring down

  664. the arrogant.

  665. Now,

  666. I didn't share this

  667. with you last week

  668. because I didn't

  669. want to brag,

  670. but I do want

  671. to tell you this week

  672. I actually

  673. personally have

  674. the capacity

  675. to shrivel

  676. fig trees

  677. to their roots.

  678. I have

  679. a can

  680. of Roundup 360

  681. in my backyard

  682. right now.

  683. And even if I didn't,

  684. we all know

  685. Home Depot

  686. is less than

  687. 10 minutes

  688. from this church.

  689. And I guarantee you

  690. they have it in stock.

  691. Roundup 360

  692. cannot destroy

  693. the sin

  694. in our hearts

  695. to its root.

  696. God's power

  697. at work

  698. through prayer

  699. is much

  700. more powerful

  701. than the shriveling

  702. of a fig tree.

  703. It makes

  704. putting a

  705. mountain

  706. into the sea

  707. look like

  708. nothing.

  709. When we pray

  710. for God's

  711. kingdom to come,

  712. we are praying

  713. something

  714. impossible

  715. and radical

  716. and revolutionary.

  717. we are praying

  718. for power

  719. that can come

  720. from God

  721. and God alone.

  722. And so

  723. we can say

  724. mountains truly

  725. are moved

  726. when we pray

  727. in our congregational

  728. prayer for our

  729. army chaplains

  730. and they are able

  731. to speak clearly

  732. about the gospel

  733. and soldiers

  734. are moved

  735. in their hearts

  736. because of that.

  737. God has moved

  738. a mountain.

  739. That is harder

  740. than withering

  741. a fig tree.

  742. It's harder

  743. than casting

  744. a mountain

  745. into the sea.

  746. When we pray

  747. for children

  748. who are taught

  749. in our Sunday

  750. school classes

  751. week after week

  752. that in 40 years

  753. they would still

  754. love Jesus

  755. and be part

  756. of his community

  757. in the church,

  758. we are praying

  759. that a mountain

  760. has been moved,

  761. that God would

  762. move mountains

  763. that are beyond

  764. our control.

  765. To do that

  766. is much harder

  767. than withering

  768. a fig tree.

  769. When we pray

  770. for oppressive

  771. and unjust systems

  772. to be replaced

  773. by the love

  774. of God

  775. and his gospel,

  776. we are praying

  777. for mountains

  778. to be moved.

  779. And so what Jesus

  780. here is saying

  781. is that the power

  782. of God's kingdom,

  783. the defeat of evil,

  784. those are the prayers

  785. that God cooperates

  786. and answers.

  787. Jesus always

  788. and ultimately

  789. answers the prayer,

  790. thy kingdom come,

  791. thy will be done

  792. on earth

  793. as it is in heaven.

  794. He just doesn't

  795. always answer it

  796. in our way

  797. on our timetable.

  798. And so that's

  799. what's going on

  800. in this image

  801. of the mountain.

  802. How do we make sense

  803. of this hard saying?

  804. We have to know

  805. the form

  806. of Jesus' teaching.

  807. His form

  808. is in exaggeration.

  809. We have to know

  810. the context

  811. of his teaching

  812. which is in

  813. the kingdom.

  814. And we are not

  815. out of the woods

  816. yet.

  817. Because we also

  818. have verses 23

  819. and 24

  820. which would

  821. at first glance

  822. make us believe

  823. that maybe

  824. we can somehow

  825. name it

  826. and claim it

  827. if we just

  828. have enough faith

  829. whatever we want

  830. in this life

  831. will happen.

  832. Or on the other side

  833. maybe we're filled

  834. with shame

  835. and guilt

  836. because obviously

  837. we don't have

  838. enough faith

  839. or God

  840. would have acted.

  841. And so we're going

  842. to head straight

  843. into that as well.

  844. Verse 23 says

  845. if you don't doubt

  846. in your heart

  847. but this man

  848. believes what he says

  849. will come to pass

  850. it will be done

  851. for him.

  852. No qualifications.

  853. If you have

  854. enough faith

  855. it's going to happen.

  856. Verse 24

  857. whatever you ask

  858. in prayer

  859. believe that you

  860. have received it

  861. and it will

  862. be yours.

  863. I want you to

  864. think about this

  865. and understand it

  866. in the context

  867. of verse 22

  868. where Jesus says

  869. have faith

  870. in God.

  871. Now in our

  872. confession this morning

  873. we already hit

  874. the first two elements

  875. of Charles Spurgeon's

  876. definition of faith.

  877. First that faith

  878. is knowledge

  879. but it's also

  880. trust or belief.

  881. It's not just

  882. knowing the facts

  883. but that they're

  884. believing that

  885. they're true.

  886. Spurgeon gives

  887. a third element

  888. though which we

  889. might call

  890. trust or action

  891. which means

  892. I live

  893. as if these

  894. things are true.

  895. I don't just

  896. say in my head

  897. I believe them

  898. but my feet

  899. and my hands

  900. and my heart

  901. show that I

  902. believe those

  903. things.

  904. If that's what

  905. we mean by faith

  906. if that's the

  907. faith that we're

  908. talking about

  909. in this prayer

  910. then we can say

  911. that Jesus

  912. is teaching this.

  913. The direction

  914. of our prayers

  915. must match

  916. the direction

  917. of our lives.

  918. The direction

  919. of our prayers

  920. must match

  921. the direction

  922. of our lives.

  923. Don't expect

  924. God to answer

  925. your prayers

  926. if you pray

  927. for the kingdom

  928. and refuse

  929. to live

  930. like the kingdom

  931. is true.

  932. In fact

  933. that's the logic

  934. that's given

  935. in the Lord's

  936. prayer right?

  937. Forgive us

  938. our debts

  939. as we

  940. forgive our

  941. debtors.

  942. It is in

  943. that sense

  944. that we believe

  945. that we've

  946. already received

  947. it.

  948. In the sense

  949. that we're

  950. praying for

  951. the kingdom

  952. and we're

  953. living as if

  954. the kingdom

  955. is true.

  956. We're demonstrating

  957. that faith

  958. by our actions.

  959. We're not just

  960. saying words

  961. but there's

  962. an integrity

  963. there's a

  964. consistency

  965. between what

  966. we ask

  967. God for

  968. and the way

  969. that we act

  970. in the world.

  971. And so that

  972. helps us understand

  973. why verse 25

  974. is here.

  975. Verse 25

  976. is one

  977. application

  978. of that

  979. principle.

  980. Okay,

  981. your prayer

  982. and your life

  983. needs to move

  984. in the same

  985. direction so

  986. verse 25

  987. whenever you

  988. stand praying

  989. forgive

  990. if you have

  991. anything against

  992. anyone so

  993. that your

  994. father also

  995. who is in

  996. heaven may

  997. forgive you

  998. your trespasses.

  999. verses 23

  1000. and 24

  1001. are not

  1002. saying

  1003. be perfect

  1004. and have

  1005. superhuman

  1006. faith

  1007. and then

  1008. whatever you

  1009. want to

  1010. happen

  1011. will happen.

  1012. It is saying

  1013. this,

  1014. live out

  1015. the Christian

  1016. life.

  1017. Live your

  1018. life in

  1019. such a way

  1020. that if

  1021. Jesus doesn't

  1022. come back

  1023. and if the

  1024. kingdom is

  1025. not true

  1026. you will

  1027. lose

  1028. big time.

  1029. That's what

  1030. it means

  1031. to believe

  1032. your prayer

  1033. has already

  1034. been answered.

  1035. It's to

  1036. truly live

  1037. into the

  1038. kingdom.

  1039. First

  1040. Corinthians

  1041. 15

  1042. talking about

  1043. the resurrection

  1044. Paul says

  1045. hey by the

  1046. way if

  1047. Jesus didn't

  1048. rise from

  1049. the dead

  1050. we Christians

  1051. we should

  1052. be pitied

  1053. more than

  1054. anyone else

  1055. in the world.

  1056. We're actually

  1057. the stupidest

  1058. people.

  1059. We're going

  1060. to lose

  1061. more than

  1062. anyone else.

  1063. Matthew

  1064. 17

  1065. Jesus

  1066. clarifies

  1067. he talks

  1068. again

  1069. in that

  1070. passage

  1071. about moving

  1072. mountains

  1073. and he

  1074. says hey

  1075. you know

  1076. how large

  1077. and great

  1078. your faith

  1079. has to be

  1080. to move

  1081. a mountain?

  1082. It has to

  1083. be so large

  1084. and great

  1085. that it's

  1086. like a

  1087. mustard seed.

  1088. The smallest

  1089. of all the

  1090. seeds.

  1091. The smallest

  1092. amount

  1093. of faith

  1094. can move

  1095. mountains.

  1096. that's

  1097. what it

  1098. means to

  1099. believe

  1100. that we

  1101. already

  1102. have it

  1103. to receive

  1104. it.

  1105. It means

  1106. that we

  1107. are living

  1108. as if

  1109. our prayers

  1110. are true.

  1111. I told

  1112. you we

  1113. have two

  1114. challenges

  1115. before us

  1116. this morning.

  1117. One to

  1118. satisfy our

  1119. minds and

  1120. understanding

  1121. what it is

  1122. that Jesus

  1123. is actually

  1124. teaching in

  1125. this passage

  1126. and the

  1127. other one

  1128. is to

  1129. address our

  1130. hearts

  1131. because I

  1132. can talk

  1133. about the

  1134. power of

  1135. prayer as

  1136. much as I

  1137. want and

  1138. I am very

  1139. aware that

  1140. for all of

  1141. us many

  1142. of us in

  1143. this room

  1144. who have

  1145. lived as

  1146. Christians for

  1147. any amount

  1148. of time

  1149. we have

  1150. had seasons

  1151. of prayer

  1152. perhaps in

  1153. the past

  1154. perhaps in

  1155. the present

  1156. and we

  1157. have not

  1158. seen the

  1159. kingdom come

  1160. in the way

  1161. we wanted

  1162. or expected.

  1163. And so this

  1164. passage raises

  1165. up for us

  1166. either this

  1167. sense of

  1168. cynicism and

  1169. despair

  1170. prayer isn't

  1171. worth it

  1172. I am going to

  1173. continue to

  1174. go through

  1175. the motions of

  1176. the Christian

  1177. life but

  1178. I have

  1179. shut my

  1180. heart down

  1181. I am not

  1182. going to

  1183. risk hoping

  1184. again.

  1185. Or it has

  1186. brought us to

  1187. places of

  1188. guilt and

  1189. shame.

  1190. Man if I

  1191. had only

  1192. prayed more

  1193. back then

  1194. then things

  1195. would be

  1196. different.

  1197. If I had

  1198. more faith

  1199. then I

  1200. wouldn't be

  1201. in the

  1202. situation I

  1203. am in

  1204. now.

  1205. In other

  1206. words we

  1207. have to

  1208. answer this

  1209. question what

  1210. do we do

  1211. when our

  1212. prayers aren't

  1213. answered?

  1214. How do we

  1215. respond when

  1216. we pray that

  1217. God would

  1218. move a

  1219. mountain and

  1220. we see the

  1221. mountain still

  1222. standing?

  1223. I have a

  1224. mentor I'll

  1225. call him

  1226. John and

  1227. John grew

  1228. up in a

  1229. Christian family

  1230. and his

  1231. parents were

  1232. both believers

  1233. and when he

  1234. was an

  1235. adult his

  1236. parents decided

  1237. that they

  1238. did not want

  1239. to be married

  1240. to each other

  1241. anymore.

  1242. And John

  1243. begged God

  1244. that he would

  1245. move that

  1246. mountain.

  1247. He begged

  1248. that the

  1249. kingdom would

  1250. come in

  1251. such a way

  1252. that his

  1253. parents would

  1254. not get a

  1255. divorce.

  1256. And they

  1257. did.

  1258. Later

  1259. John met

  1260. the love

  1261. of his

  1262. life and

  1263. they married

  1264. and they

  1265. had great

  1266. hopes and

  1267. dreams of

  1268. children together

  1269. and they

  1270. prayed that

  1271. God would

  1272. move that

  1273. mountain.

  1274. And he

  1275. didn't.

  1276. And so I

  1277. asked him at

  1278. one point I

  1279. said what have

  1280. you done

  1281. with that?

  1282. How do you

  1283. work through

  1284. that in light

  1285. of God's

  1286. promises to

  1287. you about

  1288. prayer and

  1289. what you

  1290. believe about

  1291. his goodness?

  1292. And he

  1293. said this.

  1294. He said that

  1295. took several

  1296. years to

  1297. really work

  1298. through because

  1299. there's so

  1300. many other

  1301. ways that I've

  1302. seen God's

  1303. goodness.

  1304. You use

  1305. what you've

  1306. seen in the

  1307. light to

  1308. help you

  1309. trust in

  1310. the dark.

  1311. I don't

  1312. understand Lord

  1313. why you would

  1314. let this

  1315. happen but I

  1316. also know

  1317. this is a

  1318. broken world

  1319. and that's not

  1320. your fault.

  1321. that's our

  1322. fault.

  1323. I need to

  1324. trust that

  1325. you're still

  1326. with me in

  1327. this and

  1328. you haven't

  1329. forgotten me.

  1330. You use

  1331. what you've

  1332. seen in the

  1333. light to

  1334. help you

  1335. trust in

  1336. the dark.

  1337. And then he

  1338. goes on to

  1339. say this.

  1340. When prayer

  1341. does not change

  1342. things I need

  1343. to trust.

  1344. Lord you are

  1345. still good and

  1346. I don't know

  1347. why you haven't

  1348. answered this but

  1349. I trust you and

  1350. I'm going to

  1351. keep asking.

  1352. That doesn't

  1353. mean there

  1354. aren't times

  1355. when I'm in

  1356. sorrow.

  1357. That's why so

  1358. many of the

  1359. psalms are

  1360. lament psalms

  1361. because of

  1362. unanswered

  1363. prayer.

  1364. God knows

  1365. how grieving

  1366. that can be and

  1367. so he gives us

  1368. the language to

  1369. use in the

  1370. face of

  1371. unanswered

  1372. prayer.

  1373. prayer.

  1374. The same

  1375. trust that

  1376. allows us to

  1377. pray allows us

  1378. to keep

  1379. following God

  1380. even when we

  1381. don't see what

  1382. we want to

  1383. see.

  1384. You use what

  1385. you've seen in

  1386. the light to

  1387. help you trust

  1388. in the dark.

  1389. Of course

  1390. that's what we

  1391. sang this

  1392. morning, right?

  1393. We sang how

  1394. long?

  1395. How long

  1396. until you wipe

  1397. our tears

  1398. away?

  1399. How long

  1400. until we see

  1401. you descending

  1402. from the sky?

  1403. Of course

  1404. if you read

  1405. the book of

  1406. Psalms you know

  1407. that at the

  1408. end the last

  1409. psalms are all

  1410. psalms of praise

  1411. which is the

  1412. psalmist's way of

  1413. teaching us that

  1414. in the end all

  1415. of our laments

  1416. turn into songs

  1417. of praise to

  1418. God if we

  1419. wait long

  1420. enough.

  1421. The kingdom

  1422. will come

  1423. fully and

  1424. finally.

  1425. Finally Jesus

  1426. teaches this

  1427. knowing that

  1428. the most

  1429. painful

  1430. unanswered

  1431. prayer in

  1432. all of

  1433. history

  1434. will happen

  1435. to him

  1436. soon.

  1437. You'll

  1438. remember as

  1439. Jesus is

  1440. facing his

  1441. own death

  1442. he prays out

  1443. to God

  1444. and he

  1445. basically says

  1446. look I want

  1447. there to be

  1448. another way

  1449. for this to

  1450. happen

  1451. but not

  1452. my will

  1453. be done

  1454. your will.

  1455. And so

  1456. Jesus'

  1457. prayer goes

  1458. unanswered

  1459. and Jesus

  1460. himself removes

  1461. the greatest

  1462. mountain he

  1463. removes the

  1464. mountain of

  1465. sin that

  1466. separates us

  1467. from God

  1468. because of

  1469. his unanswered

  1470. prayer he

  1471. suffers the

  1472. punishment the

  1473. death that we

  1474. deserve and

  1475. he lives the

  1476. perfect life

  1477. that we did

  1478. not so that

  1479. we can cry

  1480. out how long

  1481. so that we

  1482. can pray to

  1483. God asking

  1484. him to move

  1485. mountains so

  1486. that we can

  1487. have the faith

  1488. that accesses

  1489. the very power

  1490. of God.

  1491. When we don't

  1492. know where

  1493. God is or

  1494. how he is

  1495. acting we

  1496. simply look to

  1497. Jesus on the

  1498. cross.

  1499. Jesus.

  1500. And we

  1501. know

  1502. as we're

  1503. told by

  1504. the apostle

  1505. Paul all

  1506. the promises

  1507. of God are

  1508. yes and

  1509. amen in

  1510. him.

  1511. All our

  1512. prayers for

  1513. mountains to

  1514. be moved,

  1515. all our

  1516. prayers for

  1517. the kingdom

  1518. to come

  1519. are, have

  1520. been answered

  1521. and will be

  1522. answered in

  1523. Jesus.

  1524. Jesus.

  1525. I

  1526. mentioned

  1527. before

  1528. Charles

  1529. Spurgeon

  1530. who's a

  1531. famous

  1532. Baptist

  1533. preacher

  1534. in London

  1535. in the

  1536. 19th century

  1537. and the

  1538. story is

  1539. told of

  1540. five young

  1541. college

  1542. students who

  1543. were spending

  1544. a Sunday

  1545. in London

  1546. and so they

  1547. decided hey

  1548. here's what we

  1549. really want to

  1550. do we want to

  1551. go hear this

  1552. great Charles

  1553. Spurgeon guy

  1554. preach because

  1555. we've heard

  1556. about how

  1557. wonderful he

  1558. is.

  1559. So they're

  1560. waiting for

  1561. the doors to

  1562. open and

  1563. this unassuming

  1564. man comes in

  1565. and greets

  1566. them and

  1567. he says

  1568. gentlemen let

  1569. me show

  1570. you around

  1571. would you

  1572. like to

  1573. see the

  1574. heating plant

  1575. of this

  1576. church.

  1577. They thought

  1578. this was a

  1579. strange request

  1580. because they

  1581. happened to

  1582. be visiting

  1583. in the month

  1584. of July but

  1585. they decided

  1586. to amuse

  1587. this old

  1588. man.

  1589. They didn't

  1590. want to

  1591. offend him

  1592. so we're

  1593. told they're

  1594. taken down

  1595. a stairway.

  1596. A door

  1597. was quietly

  1598. opened and

  1599. their guide

  1600. whispered

  1601. this is

  1602. our heating

  1603. plant.

  1604. To the

  1605. surprise the

  1606. students saw

  1607. 700 people

  1608. bowed in

  1609. prayer seeking

  1610. a blessing

  1611. on the

  1612. service that

  1613. was soon

  1614. to begin

  1615. in the

  1616. auditorium

  1617. above.

  1618. Softly

  1619. closing the

  1620. door that

  1621. man introduced

  1622. himself to

  1623. them.

  1624. It was

  1625. Charles Spurgeon

  1626. himself.

  1627. Prayer

  1628. moves

  1629. mountains.

  1630. Christians.

  1631. It is the

  1632. heating plant

  1633. of the

  1634. Christian

  1635. life.

  1636. And as

  1637. we pray

  1638. in faith

  1639. for God's

  1640. kingdom to

  1641. come

  1642. we use

  1643. what we've

  1644. seen in

  1645. the light

  1646. to trust

  1647. in the

  1648. dark.

  1649. Let's pray.

  1650. Our

  1651. Father in

  1652. heaven we

  1653. praise you

  1654. and thank you

  1655. for your

  1656. word for

  1657. your promises

  1658. of prayer

  1659. and for

  1660. your

  1661. encouragement

  1662. to us.

  1663. We ask

  1664. that you

  1665. would use

  1666. this teaching

  1667. in our

  1668. lives.

  1669. That we

  1670. would cry

  1671. out to you

  1672. more and

  1673. more with

  1674. hope and

  1675. longing

  1676. that the

  1677. direction of

  1678. our lives

  1679. and the

  1680. direction of

  1681. our prayers

  1682. would be

  1683. one and

  1684. the same.

  1685. Knowing that

  1686. you're the

  1687. one who

  1688. gives us

  1689. the power

  1690. and the

  1691. grace.

  1692. We ask

  1693. these things

  1694. in Jesus

  1695. name.

  1696. Amen.

  1697. I invite

  1698. you to

  1699. stand
