  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  11. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark,

  12. and you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection.

  13. And we are continuing the story we began a few weeks ago, which is the story of Holy Week.

  14. You'll remember day one of Holy Week, Sunday.

  15. Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, and then He finishes out the day by inspecting the temple.

  16. And then Monday, He shows right back up.

  17. He saw all the things that were going on in the temple, and so He curses the fig tree,

  18. then cleanses the temple.

  19. And then day three, Tuesday, in the morning, they're heading out,

  20. and they see that the fig tree's been withered all the way to the root,

  21. and He talks about the mountains being cast into the sea by great faith.

  22. And so that takes us to today's passage.

  23. Now, His cleansing of the temple in chapter 11, verse 18,

  24. actually sets the stage for what's about to happen in this passage,

  25. and the passages to follow because He has finally sort of thrown down the gauntlet

  26. and let the religious leaders know He is here for a conflict.

  27. He's come in as the king without apology in His triumphal entry.

  28. He's come in as the one to cleanse the temple.

  29. And so He has truly taken the baseball bat to the bee's nest.

  30. And so that's why we see the religious leaders coming after Him now.

  31. The focus of the Gospels, of course, is on Jesus' second coming, or His first coming.

  32. But as we look at this passage, we're also going to see Him hint at,

  33. look forward to talk about His second coming as well.

  34. And so as we jump into this passage, we're at Mark chapter 11, starting verse 27.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  35. This is the map. This is where we're headed.

  36. I'm going to tell you the story.

  37. And after we talk about the story, I'm going to tell you three things.

  38. Okay? Story, three things.

  39. With that, I invite you to turn with me in God's Word.

  40. You can turn in your worship guide.

  41. You can turn on your phone.

  42. You can turn in your Bible.

  43. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  44. And God tells us that His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  45. which means that He has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  46. but instead He's given us His Word to show us the way to go.

  47. And so that's why we read now Mark chapter 11, starting at verse 27.

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  48. And they came again to Jerusalem.

  49. And as He was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to Him.

  50. And they said to Him,

  51. By what authority are you doing these things?

  52. Or who gave you this authority to do them?

  53. Jesus said to them,

  54. I will ask you one question.

  55. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

  56. Was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?

  57. Answer me.

  58. And they discussed it with one another, saying,

  59. If we say from heaven, He will say,

  60. Why then did you not believe Him?

  61. But shall we say from man?

  62. They were afraid of the people,

  63. for they all heard that John really was a prophet.

  64. So they answered Jesus,

  65. We do not know.

  66. And Jesus said to them,

  67. Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

  68. Chapter 12.

  69. And He began to speak to them in parables.

  70. A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it

  71. and dug a pit for the winepress

  72. and built a tower

  73. and leased it to tenants and went into another country.

  74. When the season came,

  75. He sent a servant to the tenants to get from them

  76. some of the fruit of the vineyard.

  77. And they took him and beat him

  78. and sent him away empty-handed.

  79. Again He sent to them another servant

  80. and they struck him on the head

  81. and treated him shamefully.

  82. And He sent another and him they killed.

  83. And so with many others.

  84. Some they beat and some they killed.

  85. Verse 6.

  86. He had still one other, a beloved son.

  87. Finally, He sent him to them saying,

  88. They will respect my son.

  89. But those tenants said to one another,

  90. This is the heir.

  91. Come, let us kill him

  92. and the inheritance will be ours.

  93. And they took him and killed him

  94. and threw him out of the vineyard.

  95. What will the owner of the vineyard do?

  96. He will come and destroy the tenants

  97. and give the vineyard to others.

  98. Have you not read this scripture?

  99. The stone that the builders rejected

  100. has become the cornerstone.

  101. This was the Lord's doing

  102. and it is marvelous in our eyes.

  103. And they were seeking to arrest Him

  104. but feared the people

  105. for they perceived that He had told the parable

  106. against them.

  107. So they left Him and went away.

  108. I invite you to pray with me

  109. as we come to this passage of God's Word.

  110. Our Father in Heaven,

  111. the psalmist asks you in Psalm 119

  112. to open His eyes

  113. that He would behold wondrous things

  114. out of your law.

  115. And we ask the same thing this morning.

  116. We know that without your help,

  117. we can't understand your Word.

  118. And so we ask that you would send

  119. your Holy Spirit now,

  120. that you would give us clarity in our minds,

  121. you'd give us tenderness in our hearts,

  122. that we would be able to hear and receive

  123. everything that you've written in your Word,

  124. that you would cast a spotlight on Jesus for us

  125. so we would see His beauty and His glory

  126. and His holiness and His love,

  127. and that we'd follow after Him

  128. with faith and joy and obedience.

  129. We ask these things

  130. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  131. Amen.

  132. As we begin this story,

  133. I mentioned we're doing it

  134. against the backdrop of Jesus' confrontation

  135. that He's already had

  136. with the religious leaders.

  137. First of all, He ticks them off

  138. by having His triumphal entry

  139. and being willing to say,

  140. yes, He is in fact the King.

  141. And then to add insult to injury,

  142. He goes and cleanses the temple

  143. of those who are selling things

  144. and exchanging money there.

  145. And so that helps us understand

  146. as we begin this confrontation,

  147. the scribes and the elders

  148. and the chief priests ask Him,

  149. verse 28,

  150. by what authority are you doing these things?

  151. These things here is a reference

  152. to everything that's come before.

  153. By what authority are you rolling into the temple,

  154. turning over tables,

  155. driving out money changers?

  156. I mean, you're acting like you own the place.

  157. And so what gives you the nerve?

  158. What gives you the right to come in

  159. and behave this way?

  160. Jesus turns it back on them

  161. and He says, look,

  162. I'm gonna ask you a question.

  163. And the question Jesus asks them

  164. is not random here.

  165. He is saying, essentially,

  166. the answer to my question

  167. is the answer to your question.

  168. Now, this might sound foreign,

  169. but we actually do the same thing today.

  170. So if you were to ask me,

  171. Matthew, are we having church on Sunday?

  172. I might say, is the sky blue?

  173. Do bears poop in the woods?

  174. Yes, of course we're having church on Sunday.

  175. The answer to my question

  176. is the answer to your question.

  177. This is what Jesus is pushing them with.

  178. In other words,

  179. John's authority is my authority.

  180. If you understand John,

  181. you will understand me.

  182. If you know what authority he acted under,

  183. you will know what authority I acted under.

  184. verse 28 or verse 29,

  185. verse 30,

  186. was the baptism of John from heaven or from man?

  187. And so Jesus might have well asked them,

  188. is my authority,

  189. do you think it's from heaven or from man?

  190. Of course, we have this revelation

  191. of where their hearts truly are.

  192. Verse 33, we do not know.

  193. And so Jesus says,

  194. basically, I'm wasting my time here.

  195. You didn't understand John,

  196. you're not gonna understand me.

  197. You didn't recognize John,

  198. you're not gonna recognize me.

  199. You didn't repent when John told you to repent,

  200. you're not going to repent when I tell you to repent.

  201. You are not asking sincere questions.

  202. You're not seeking understanding.

  203. You're here just to trick me and trap me.

  204. And so this is a waste of my time.

  205. There's no time on my calendar

  206. for this sort of conflict.

  207. In fact, they've already played their hands.

  208. They've revealed where their hearts truly are.

  209. They are not interested in truth.

  210. They're interested in power and reputation,

  211. what serves them best.

  212. Truth is irrelevant

  213. since their concern is self-protection.

  214. They're trying to trap Jesus,

  215. not to learn from Jesus.

  216. And really what Jesus is about to do here,

  217. he's about to return to the lesson of the fig tree.

  218. We talked about a few weeks ago from chapter 11,

  219. that this is all leaf, no fig.

  220. The religious leaders are all show, no substance.

  221. And while Jesus has told them

  222. he's not going to answer their question,

  223. he then turns around and proceeds

  224. to answer their question,

  225. except he does it in the form of a story, of a parable.

  226. Remember the question is by what authority?

  227. That word authority repeats over and over again

  228. between verses 27 and 33.

  229. And so Jesus now decides to tell them a story

  230. about authority, the story of the vineyard.

  231. Now you may be familiar,

  232. you may remember from chapter four,

  233. when Jesus spoke in parables,

  234. often he would need to provide this explanation

  235. afterwards to the disciples.

  236. He would pull them aside into his private gathering

  237. to help them understand what it was

  238. he was actually talking about.

  239. In this incidence though,

  240. there is no need for such a thing.

  241. Jesus has burning clarity.

  242. In fact, his clarity is so burning,

  243. verse 12, we're told,

  244. instead of being confused immediately,

  245. these religious leaders understood

  246. exactly what Jesus was saying.

  247. They knew,

  248. they perceived that he had told the parable against them.

  249. easy for the religious leaders to understand,

  250. also easy for us to understand.

  251. It's not an accident that we read

  252. from Isaiah chapter five this morning,

  253. which presents this image of Israel as a vineyard.

  254. And this image shows up not just in Isaiah chapter five,

  255. but in other portions throughout the Old Testament.

  256. And so it was easily recognizable

  257. that when we're talking about a vineyard,

  258. we're talking about Israel.

  259. Then we have these tenants.

  260. These tenants are supposed to watch the vineyard

  261. for its owner.

  262. And we have to understand the logic of this,

  263. how a tenant in that time

  264. when they were given a vineyard

  265. would sort of share in a portion of the crop

  266. in return for watching after the vineyard.

  267. It was common for owners to leave

  268. and to have someone

  269. that that would be essentially a renter from them.

  270. And they would split the profits

  271. or share the profits.

  272. So the tenants would get some of the grapes,

  273. some of the wine.

  274. And then the owner would get some of the grapes,

  275. some of the wine.

  276. They would share the proceeds.

  277. There would be the one

  278. who has the capital investment,

  279. who's able to set up this vineyard.

  280. And then there's the one

  281. who doesn't have the resources,

  282. who's just there to watch over it.

  283. The tenants here are the Jewish religious leaders.

  284. They are not the ones

  285. who set up the sacrificial system.

  286. They're not the ones

  287. who came up with the idea of the temple.

  288. No, God was the one who did all of that work.

  289. He was the one, chapter 12, verse one,

  290. who put a fence around the vidyard,

  291. dug a pit for a wine press,

  292. built a tower.

  293. God here is the great investor.

  294. And so these priests and tribes

  295. are ones who are simply there

  296. to watch over what God has set up.

  297. And there's an expectation

  298. that they're going to have fruit,

  299. that they're going to accomplish

  300. God's mission for Israel,

  301. that Israel would be a light to the nations,

  302. a show people that the nations

  303. could look around and say,

  304. oh, that's what it actually looks like

  305. when God's people walk in God's ways.

  306. That's what a society actually looks like

  307. when it's filled with justice

  308. and mercy and love and goodness.

  309. That's what it looks like

  310. when people treat each other

  311. as created in the image of God.

  312. And instead of doing that,

  313. the religious leaders chose instead

  314. to serve themselves.

  315. They chose instead to look

  316. for their own profit.

  317. They didn't care about the owner.

  318. They didn't care about God

  319. and his purposes and his ways

  320. and his mission.

  321. And so then we find out,

  322. okay, this owner sends his servants

  323. to check in.

  324. Verse six on what's happening.

  325. Actually, verses two through six,

  326. he sends these servants in

  327. over and over to go check

  328. and see how is the vineyard doing?

  329. What's happening there?

  330. Am I getting the profit that I want?

  331. Is the fruit that's supposed

  332. to come from these plants

  333. actually materializing?

  334. And instead of being treated

  335. with honor as the servants

  336. and representatives

  337. of the owner of the vineyard,

  338. of God himself,

  339. they're beaten and killed.

  340. This is supposed to represent

  341. God sending his prophets

  342. throughout the Old Testament

  343. to his people,

  344. sending them to warn them

  345. about their lack of spiritual fruit,

  346. to rebuke the spiritual leaders

  347. for feeding themselves

  348. rather than feeding the people.

  349. And so we can think of

  350. just a few examples out of many.

  351. Elisha, one of the Old Testament prophets,

  352. was persecuted by Jezebel,

  353. who was the queen of Israel.

  354. She wanted to kill him.

  355. If you want to read about that,

  356. you can read about it

  357. in 1 Kings chapter 19.

    1 Kings 19 chapter mention

  358. Then we hear about Manasseh,

  359. the king of Judah.

  360. Tradition holds that Manasseh,

  361. this king of God's people,

  362. decided he was going to saw Isaiah in half.

  363. Which is a great way to end as a prophet.

  364. And then in case we haven't forgotten,

  365. remember we see the last prophet

  366. before Jesus here in the Gospel of Mark.

  367. Mark chapter 6,

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  368. what happens to John the Baptist?

  369. He's beheaded.

  370. And so these religious leaders

  371. know all too well

  372. what Jesus is telling them.

  373. Look, God has sent his representatives

  374. over and over again

  375. to warn you.

  376. And all you did was reject them.

  377. It was a bad deal

  378. to be an Old Testament prophet.

  379. It was a thankless job.

  380. In fact, this is not in the Bible,

  381. but church tradition holds

  382. that at one point,

  383. the prophet Isaiah

  384. applied for term life insurance.

  385. And he was denied

  386. just based on his vocation.

  387. He was unable to qualify.

  388. He was laughed out of the building.

  389. That's how bad it was

  390. to be one of the servants.

  391. And so Jesus is taking this long route,

  392. this long story

  393. to get to the answer

  394. of their question.

  395. Remember, they want to know

  396. by what authority.

  397. And after laying out

  398. the history of Israel,

  399. after reminding them

  400. of the way they've treated the prophets,

  401. he finally gets to the point.

  402. I am the son

  403. of the vineyard owner.

  404. I am the one

  405. who's supposed to receive

  406. the inheritance.

  407. I am the one

  408. to whom all of this belongs.

  409. By what authority

  410. do I cleanse the temple?

  411. I cleanse it as the son

  412. of the owner of the temple.

  413. I cleanse it as one

  414. to whom it belongs.

  415. There is no

  416. higher authority.

  417. I do it

  418. in the authority

  419. by the authority

  420. of God himself,

  421. an authority

  422. that you

  423. don't

  424. care about.

  425. Jesus here

  426. could

  427. not

  428. be

  429. clearer.

  430. Again,

  431. verse 12,

  432. they perceived

  433. he told the parable

  434. against them.

  435. The meaning

  436. is not hidden.

  437. Jesus has not

  438. been subtle here.

  439. He's told this

  440. obvious story

  441. and the religious leaders

  442. understand it all

  443. too well.

  444. He is telling them this,

  445. you rejected

  446. John the Baptist,

  447. you have rejected

  448. me,

  449. and you will

  450. kill me.

  451. that's not all

  452. though.

  453. Verse 9,

  454. because of all

  455. that,

  456. judgment

  457. is

  458. coming.

  459. What will the

  460. owner of the

  461. vineyard do?

  462. He will come

  463. and destroy

  464. the tenants

  465. and give

  466. the vineyard

  467. to others.

  468. your time

  469. here

  470. has an

  471. expiration date.

  472. Your authority

  473. over the temple

  474. is coming

  475. to an end.

  476. Your era

  477. of power

  478. and control

  479. will not

  480. last

  481. much

  482. longer.

  483. Now,

  484. this raises

  485. a question

  486. for us.

  487. Remember,

  488. I told you

  489. I'm going

  490. to tell you

  491. the story

  492. and then

  493. I'm going

  494. to tell

  495. you three

  496. things.

  497. You all,

  498. believe it or

  499. not,

  500. are not

  501. chief priests,

  502. scribes,

  503. or rulers

  504. of the temple.

  505. And this

  506. passage is

  507. meant to

  508. explain the

  509. overthrow of

  510. the temple

  511. leadership.

  512. And so,

  513. what is it

  514. that we're

  515. supposed to

  516. draw out

  517. of this

  518. as people

  519. in 2022

  520. reading this

  521. story about

  522. Jesus explaining

  523. his cleansing

  524. of the temple?

  525. Well,

  526. I'm going

  527. to give you

  528. three things

  529. for us to

  530. hold on to

  531. from this

  532. story as

  533. people who

  534. look forward

  535. to Jesus'

  536. second coming,

  537. people who

  538. follow after

  539. Jesus,

  540. things that

  541. give us

  542. hope and

  543. challenge

  544. from what

  545. Jesus tells

  546. us.

  547. First of

  548. all,

  549. we find

  550. out in

  551. this story

  552. the end

  553. of the

  554. story.

  555. How is

  556. everything

  557. going to

  558. turn out?

  559. At the

  560. very end,

  561. we know

  562. the owner

  563. of the

  564. vineyard

  565. is coming

  566. back.

  567. Verse

  568. nine,

  569. what will

  570. the owner

  571. of the

  572. vineyard

  573. do?

  574. He will

  575. come and

  576. destroy the

  577. tenants and

  578. give the

  579. vineyard to

  580. others.

  581. Now,

  582. yes,

  583. when we're

  584. hearing about

  585. the owner

  586. of the

  587. vineyard,

  588. it's talking

  589. about the

  590. Jewish

  591. leadership.

  592. And so,

  593. in a sense,

  594. what Jesus

  595. says here has

  596. already been

  597. done, and

  598. it foreshadows

  599. and follows

  600. after what we

  601. also know is

  602. going to happen

  603. at the end of

  604. the age.

  605. We may see

  606. injustice and

  607. oppression and

  608. selfishness happening

  609. now from the

  610. tenants of the

  611. vineyard, from

  612. those who are in

  613. charge in the

  614. religious world or

  615. the secular world

  616. who are looking to

  617. use rather than

  618. to love.

  619. and we know it

  620. will not last

  621. forever.

  622. The owner is

  623. coming back.

  624. He is going

  625. to clean

  626. house.

  627. Now, there's a

  628. flip side to

  629. that that's also

  630. in this passage

  631. because when we

  632. talk about the

  633. fact that Jesus

  634. is coming back,

  635. there's this

  636. question that

  637. arises that was

  638. also true for

  639. the early church,

  640. which is this,

  641. why hasn't he

  642. come back yet?

  643. If Jesus is

  644. coming back to

  645. make all things

  646. right, why is

  647. he waiting?

  648. It seems like

  649. things are getting

  650. pretty bad.

  651. It seems like

  652. now would be a

  653. great time.

  654. If you remember

  655. when we went

  656. through 2 Peter,

  657. we looked in

  658. 2 Peter 3,

  659. and Peter actually

  660. addresses this

  661. question.

  662. He says,

  663. the Lord is not

  664. slow to fulfill

  665. his promise as

  666. some count slowness,

  667. but is patient

  668. toward you,

  669. not wishing that

  670. any should perish,

  671. but that all should

  672. reach repentance.

  673. What do we see

  674. here from the

  675. vineyard owner?

  676. He is incredibly

  677. patient.

  678. Verses 2 through 6

  679. is him sending

  680. his servants

  681. over and over

  682. again and

  683. watching them get

  684. beaten or killed.

  685. It's almost

  686. nonsensical.

  687. You would think

  688. if you owned a

  689. vineyard and you

  690. sent one servant

  691. and that servant

  692. was beaten or

  693. killed, what would

  694. you do?

  695. You'd probably be

  696. posting on next

  697. door.

  698. You guys would

  699. not believe I

  700. sent my servant

  701. in and he got

  702. beaten.

  703. Never hire these

  704. people as your

  705. tenants at your

  706. vineyard.

  707. Yet God just

  708. keeps sending them

  709. again and again.

  710. He's sending the

  711. prophets over and

  712. over showing his

  713. forbearance, his

  714. patience, his

  715. long-suffering with

  716. his people.

  717. Often you'll hear

  718. folks talk about how

  719. God in the Old

  720. Testament is a God

  721. of wrath.

  722. Then we have God of

  723. the New Testament,

  724. this God of love.

  725. Yet that's not the

  726. picture the Bible

  727. gives us.

  728. The picture the

  729. Bible gives us of

  730. this God who is

  731. just patient decade

  732. after decade,

  733. century after

  734. century, millennia

  735. after millennia.

  736. God is more patient

  737. than you.

  738. God is more long

  739. suffering than you.

  740. God has more

  741. forbearance than you

  742. do even if you are

  743. the nicest person I

  744. have ever met.

  745. And God does it for

  746. the sake of repentance.

  747. He gives his people

  748. time and time again

  749. opportunities to turn

  750. back and return to

  751. him.

  752. And so the vineyard

  753. owner is coming

  754. back.

  755. God is coming back

  756. to this world to set

  757. all things right.

  758. And his delay

  759. shows his patience.

  760. It shows his love.

  761. It shows his

  762. wisdom.

  763. And he is not

  764. patient forever.

  765. He's not patient

  766. forever.

  767. So I told you I was

  768. going to tell you two

  769. things.

  770. The second is this.

  771. Well the first was we

  772. know the end of the

  773. story.

  774. God's patience does not

  775. mean he's not coming

  776. back.

  777. The second one is that

  778. ultimately his patience

  779. ends with him

  780. returning and there are

  781. two and only two

  782. options.

  783. There are only two

  784. ways to live.

  785. Either we worship

  786. Jesus or we reject

  787. Jesus.

  788. Remember I've told you

  789. over and over as we've

  790. been going through the

  791. gospel of Mark that as

  792. the story moves forward

  793. as we get near the end

  794. we're no longer going to

  795. have three categories of

  796. people.

  797. At the beginning we had

  798. those who were on

  799. Jesus' team.

  800. They were pro-Jesus.

  801. We had those who were

  802. against Jesus.

  803. They hated him.

  804. And then we just had

  805. these crowds in the

  806. middle that didn't quite

  807. know what to do.

  808. They were intrigued.

  809. They were curious.

  810. Now we're getting to the

  811. point where that middle

  812. category disappears.

  813. which is the narrator's

  814. way of telling us.

  815. Mark's way of

  816. underscoring that in

  817. the end as you get to

  818. know Jesus, as you

  819. understand him and

  820. study him, you have to

  821. make a choice.

  822. There are only two

  823. options.

  824. Those who love Jesus

  825. and those who hate

  826. him.

  827. That's part of what

  828. Jesus is getting at

  829. here when he cites

  830. Psalm 118 in verse

  831. 10.

  832. The stone that the

  833. builders rejected has

  834. become the cornerstone.

  835. A cornerstone is the

  836. stone of a building

  837. that's laid first.

  838. It's the stone that has

  839. to be laid perfectly

  840. because everything else

  841. matches it and aligns

  842. with it.

  843. Every other stone exists

  844. in reference to the

  845. cornerstone.

  846. Everything is submitted to

  847. it, aligned with it,

  848. in agreement with it.

  849. This quotation then from

  850. Psalm 118 is reminding

  851. us either we align with

  852. Jesus or we don't.

  853. Either we love the

  854. cornerstone or we reject

  855. it, either we build on

  856. it or we trip on it.

  857. Either you harden your

  858. heart or you repent.

  859. Either you decide you're

  860. going to try to be God

  861. or you submit to God.

  862. Either your heart is hard

  863. or it is tender and

  864. responsive.

  865. Either you serve yourself

  866. or you serve the owner of

  867. the vineyard.

  868. Either God's word confirms

  869. judgment or it confirms

  870. salvation.

  871. There are no other options.

  872. Either you reject God's

  873. messengers or you receive

  874. them.

  875. When it comes to Jesus, as

  876. we get closer and closer to

  877. the end of the story, you

  878. must make a choice.

  879. Are you going to build your

  880. life on the cornerstone or are

  881. you going to reject it and

  882. fight it?

  883. I warned you at the

  884. beginning as we began, Mark,

  885. it is not an intellectual

  886. exercise that we're taking

  887. part in, but instead the

  888. author here, Mark, is

  889. pointing the finger at us

  890. more and more.

  891. He's asking the question of

  892. us over and over again.

  893. What are you going to do

  894. with this information?

  895. How are you going to

  896. respond to it?

  897. Remember Jesus' questions

  898. in chapter 10.

  899. He asked twice, what is it

  900. that you want from me?

  901. A question of the heart.

  902. Here the same question of

  903. the heart is coming up.

  904. How are you going to

  905. respond to me?

  906. Are you going to receive

  907. my servants or are you

  908. going to beat them?

  909. Are you going to build your

  910. life on my cornerstone or are

  911. you going to reject it?

  912. Are you going to run towards

  913. me or run away from me?

  914. There are no other

  915. options.

  916. So first, we know how the

  917. story ends.

  918. We know the vineyard owner is

  919. coming back.

  920. Second, we know there's two

  921. and only two ways to live.

  922. Either we receive the king

  923. or reject the king.

  924. And the third and final thing

  925. is this.

  926. When we come to a passage of

  927. scripture and it's showing us

  928. things that are incredibly

  929. negative, when it's rebuking

  930. people for sins that

  931. potentially we don't share in,

  932. it's likely that you're not a

  933. religious leader who is using

  934. the temple for your own

  935. purposes.

  936. What do we do with that?

  937. Well, as I've mentioned to you

  938. before, one of the ways we read

  939. the Bible, when we see a

  940. negative, we turn it positive.

  941. So you look at the Ten

  942. Commandments and you see,

  943. thou shalt not commit adultery.

  944. And you think, I'm doing great.

  945. I haven't committed adultery.

  946. Well, no, there's a positive

  947. there for you.

  948. And the positive is build up

  949. your marriage.

  950. Make it as strong as you can.

  951. Do not murder.

  952. You think, well, I haven't

  953. murdered recently.

  954. I'm doing great.

  955. What can you do to promote

  956. and protect life?

  957. That's the positive.

  958. And so when we look at this

  959. negative, when we see the

  960. religious leaders beating

  961. God's servants, killing them,

  962. and throwing them away,

  963. what is our response?

  964. Our response is to look for

  965. the positive.

  966. The way that we act on God's

  967. word is we recognize his

  968. authority and his messengers.

  969. We receive God's word not with

  970. hardness or bitterness or

  971. indifference.

  972. We receive it with joy and

  973. eagerness.

  974. We have this anticipation and

  975. this excitement about what God

  976. is going to tell us in his

  977. word, what we're going to learn,

  978. the ways that we're going to

  979. grow and be shaped as people

  980. who look more and more like

  981. him.

  982. As Israel failed in their

  983. mission to be a light to the

  984. nations, as they failed for

  985. people to be able to look at

  986. them and say, that's what it

  987. looks like when God's people

  988. walk in God's ways.

  989. We have a passion to say, what

  990. would it look like for this

  991. people to be God's people who

  992. walk in God's ways?

  993. What would happen, the light we

  994. would be to our community if we

  995. were excited and zealous, filled

  996. with anticipation about what

  997. God's going to do in our

  998. midst?

  999. Filled with the desires we

1000. talked about with the fig tree

1001. to grow in that fruit, to be

1002. filled with the fruit of the

  1003. spirit.

1004. What would it be like for us

1005. not to try to kill the son of

1006. the vineyard owner, but instead

1007. to look forward to his

1008. appearing, to look forward to

1009. his coming and prepare for it?

1010. Many of you, if you have

1011. someone who's coming over to

  1012. your house, they're not a

  1013. regular guest, you probably

1014. feel some obligation to try to

1015. clean up and tidy up, right?

1016. You want it to be the most

  1017. hospitable environment it can

  1018. be.

1019. You want to give them a good

  1020. and warm welcome.

  1021. Sometimes you can recognize

1022. this when you go over to

  1023. someone's house because you

1024. look at the carpet and what do

  1025. you see?

  1026. The fresh vacuum stripes.

1027. And so you know, okay, this

1028. person has done the prep.

  1029. They've gotten ready.

1030. They cared about this event.

1031. They want to honor the guest

  1032. who's coming over.

1033. And so what I'm saying is

  1034. this.

1035. As we look forward to Jesus

1036. and his return, our hearts and

1037. our lives have the stripes of

1038. the vacuum cleaner on them.

1039. Not out of guilt or shame or

1040. fear, but because we're so

1041. excited and joyful about the

  1042. coming of the king.

1043. We want him to find everything

  1044. set in order.

1045. We want him to be honored and

  1046. exalted and glorified.

1047. We're doing the opposite of

  1048. these tenets.

1049. We're preparing for his return.

1050. Of course, this parable is also

  1051. a type of prediction.

1052. Jesus tells about the past, but

1053. he also tells about the future.

1054. In verses 2 through 5, we hear

1055. about the prophets who have been

  1056. beaten and killed.

1057. And when Jesus says this, all the

1058. prophets have been either beaten

  1059. or killed.

1060. Jesus then tells them about

  1061. something that hasn't happened.

  1062. Verses 7 through 8.

1063. But those tenants said to one

1064. another, this is the heir.

1065. Come, let us kill him and the

  1066. inheritance will be ours.

1067. And they took him and killed him

1068. and threw him out of the vineyard.

1069. Jesus is telling them, not only did

1070. you kill the prophets in the past,

1071. you will kill me, the son, in the

  1072. future.

1073. That's how twisted and broken and

1074. curved inward your hearts are.

1075. And of course, that is the

1076. sacrifice that makes it possible

1077. for us to look forward with joy to

  1078. Jesus' return.

1079. To be the ones who long to have the

1080. marks of the vacuum cleaner on our

  1081. carpet.

1082. That we know that what Jesus has

1083. done for us when he came to this

1084. earth, he lived the perfect life that

1085. we could not live and he died the

1086. death that we should have died.

1087. And so none of what Jesus is saying

1088. matters unless we know how this

1089. particular story in the gospels end.

1090. And it ends with Jesus going to his

1091. death and then rising again from the

  1092. dead.

1093. He comes to die for hard-hearted

1094. people who beat and kill the

  1095. prophets.

1096. But who turn and follow him in

  1097. repentance.

1098. He comes for hard-hearted people and

1099. changes their hearts to hearts of

  1100. flesh.

1101. He comes for people like you and me.

1102. The house that I grew up on in, the

1103. front door had window panes, not in

1104. the door, but on both sides of the

  1105. door.

1106. In fact, those windows are still there.

  1107. They're called apparently double

  1108. side lights.

1109. I just thought of them as windows

1110. along the side of the door.

1111. And every Christmas, every December

  1112. really is before Christmas.

1113. And then at one point we shifted it to

  1114. New Year's.

1115. All of my dad's family would come to

1116. our house from different parts of the

  1117. country.

1118. And so we would spend several days,

1119. maybe a week, getting ready because

1120. there's lots of things that need to be

1121. cleaned and cooked and prepared.

1122. And then the day would come when we

1123. knew our family was actually going to

  1124. arrive.

1125. And so what would we do?

1126. Well, I for one would look out those

1127. side lights because I was so excited.

1128. And even though I knew they weren't

1129. going to get there until 2 p.m., I would

1130. check it earlier than that.

  1131. Because who knows, right?

  1132. We didn't have, people didn't have

  1133. cell phones back then.

1134. This was in a different age.

1135. So no one was texting you or sending

1136. you their PIN, you know.

1137. You might get a call from a rest station

1138. like, oh, we're two hours away.

1139. So you never know the exact moment that

  1140. they might arrive.

1141. But you knew that they were and that

1142. when that time happened, you know, your

  1143. cousins would be there.

1144. Both the awkward cousin and the fun

  1145. cousin.

1146. And things would be more exciting than

1147. they had been at that moment before.

1148. And so it was worth it to look out, to

1149. try to deal with the impatience, to

1150. look and see when it was you would see

1151. the car coming down the street.

1152. Brothers and sisters, our Lord Jesus is

1153. coming back to make all things right.

1154. And so we prepare our hearts and our homes and our

1155. churches and our lives for him.

  1156. Let's pray.

1157. Our Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you

  1158. again for your word.

1159. We ask that you would not let it return to you void,

1160. but instead it would accomplish all the purposes you have

  1161. for it.

1162. That it would be at work, growing our longing and

1163. desire for you to come back and that we would live in

  1164. light of your return.

1165. We ask all of these things in Jesus' name.

  1166. Amen.

1167. I invite you to stand for our closing hymn.
