  1. welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're

  2. here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one

  3. community, and as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced there's no one so good they don't

  4. need God's grace, and no one so bad they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to

  5. hear what God has to say to us in his word. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark. You'll

  6. remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection,

  7. and we are in what I said last week was the most difficult chapter in the Gospel of Mark, at least

  8. the most difficult to understand. That's Mark 13, which talks about both the fall of Jerusalem,

  9. the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, and also the end of the world, and it was those two things that

  10. we discussed last week. Remember, we discussed the destruction of the temple. We saw God's faithfulness

  11. to his people in the first century, which reminds and reassures us of God's faithfulness to his

  12. people in the 21st century. We also saw the end of the world, which reminds us that Jesus is coming

  13. back. He is separated from us, but he has not abandoned us. So that's what we looked at in the

  14. middle of the chapter, of chapter 13 last week, and you'll remember I told you that it's easy to get

  15. lost in a passage like this. We need to have a due north clear in our minds, and for that, the heart

  16. of the passage is this. How do we make it between Jesus' first coming and his second coming? That's

  17. what the entire chapter of Mark 13 is attempting to answer. Now, in the past few weeks, we have had

  18. encouragement and comfort, God's provision towards us as we make that journey. This week, we turn towards

  19. challenge and action, because Jesus is going to remind his disciples of the importance of doing

  20. what he calls staying awake. It's with that that I invite you to turn with me to God's word. We're in

  21. Mark chapter 13, starting at verse 32. You can turn with me in your worship guide. You can turn in your

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  22. Bible. You can turn on your phone. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word, and God tells

  23. us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold, and it's sweeter than honey, even

  24. honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. And so, that's why we read now Mark chapter 13, starting at

    Mark 13 chapter mention

  25. verse 32. But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven nor the sun,

  26. but only the father. Be on guard, keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

  27. It is like a man going on a journey when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge,

  28. each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not

  29. know when the master of the house will come, in the evening or at midnight, or when the rooster crows,

  30. or in the morning, lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you, I say to all,

  31. stay awake. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  32. Our Father in heaven, we thank you once again that you have not left us without instruction, but instead

  33. you come to us and you speak to us clearly in your word. We ask that you would do that again this

  34. morning, that we'd understand the hope of Jesus' return. We'd also know the challenge and the

  35. preparation that you've given us, that we would be encouraged and empowered by your grace and

  36. challenged by your commands. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  37. Amen. If you are a homeowner and you're anything like me, you know that there is sort of an endless

  38. list of things that need to get done. Let's see if I can stop that. Endless list of things that need

  39. to get done. And so you sort of have to prioritize what is the most important or the most urgent thing,

  40. because it's impossible to do everything at once. So one of the things that's been on my list for

  41. a while is I really wanted to get my fence gate replaced because the gate just drives me nuts.

  42. It does not close really all the way, swirling apart, not really. And it's just a thorn in my side.

  43. So at the end of last year, I decided this is the time I'm going to get the gate replaced.

  44. Here's the thing though. The gate didn't have to be replaced. It didn't need to be replaced. It just

  45. annoyed me. And I wanted to know that in my life, whenever I dealt with the gate, it would just work

  46. exactly the way I wanted it to work. And the reason I did that is because I expect to be in my house for

  47. a long time. And so it's worth it to me to make that investment for my own enjoyment. If I were planning

  48. to put my house on the market in six months or 12 months, the gate would be a complete waste of money

  49. because no one cares when they're trying to buy my house, whether the gate is perfect or not, right?

  50. They're not going to add several thousand dollars to have the house with the new gate.

  51. No, it'd just be complete throwing it away.

  52. Which I bring up to remind you all of just a simple principle, which is that what we believe

  53. about the future, what we think the future holds for us determines how we live and operate in the

  54. present. Because I believe, because I hope that I'm going to enjoy this gate for many years, it's worth

  55. it to me to replace it. If I were shopping around for a new house, there would be other things that

  56. would be more important to fix, other things that might help it actually gain value on the market.

  57. There's been talk recently about how my generation is supposedly going to live longer than other

  58. generations. And so we should think more seriously about saving for retirement because our age is just

  59. going to go on and on and on. Now, whether that's true is a different discussion, but it again

  60. highlights this fact, what we believe the future holds determines how we live now. This passage asks us,

  61. do you really believe that Jesus is coming back? Do you really believe that Jesus is coming back?

  62. Will you live as if that's true? When I bought a new gate to my fence, I was living out my belief that I'm

  63. going to be in my house for a while. Do we live out the belief that Jesus is actually coming back?

  64. Now, remember I told you in chapter 13 of Mark, we're talking about two things. We're talking about the

  65. destruction of the temple in 70 AD, and we're talking about Jesus' return. In this section, we are turning

  66. back. Remember, last week we were talking primarily about the destruction of the temple, at least at the

  67. end, first. And so now the question is, why do we know that in this talk that Jesus is giving, we're

  68. talking about his return, not the destruction of the temple? Because we're talking about both, right?

  69. So why do we know that this parable of the man who's returning to his servants, how do we know this is

  70. about Jesus coming back, not about Jerusalem? Well, there's a few things. First of all, verses 34 and 35

  71. give us an example of an individual who leaves and then returns. The destruction of the temple,

  72. the fall of Jerusalem, is not about one person leaving and coming back, right? That doesn't make sense.

  73. So Jesus' illustration here makes most sense in talking about his return. Second, it stands in sharp

  74. contrast to verses 28 through 31, which we just looked at. Those verses are about watching the signs, knowing

  75. when the fall of Jerusalem is going to come. Here, there are no signs to know, verse 32, but concerning that

  76. day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. And so the

  77. uncertainty of the return also points to the fact that we're talking about Jesus coming back. There's

  78. many reasons. I'm just going to point you to two more. In verse 32, we're told, but concerning that day

  79. or that hour. If Jesus was continuing his discussion of the fall of Jerusalem, he would not say, but

  80. concerning that day or that hour. He would say, and concerning that day or that hour. So, but there tells us

  81. we're changing topics. And finally, that day or that hour in verse 32 is a technical term that appears

  82. throughout the New Testament to refer to the day when Jesus is coming back. With all of that being said,

  83. this passage is not complicated. In fact, it's incredibly simple. It is set up to be idiot proof.

  84. And the main point is clear. The main point is this, stay awake. We know that's the main point

  85. because it's repeated not once, not twice, not thrice. It's repeated four times in verses 33 through 36.

  86. And even before the passage is finished, we're given the summary, the whole point, right in verse 33.

  87. Be on guard, keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

  88. And so the point of this passage is very, very simple. Live your life

  89. in light of the fact that Jesus is coming back.

  90. Live your life in light of the fact that Jesus is coming back.

  91. Verse 34,

  92. We have this man going on a journey. What does he do?

  93. He gives each of his servants their work.

  94. He leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with their work.

  95. So there's something these servants are supposed to be doing.

  96. And he commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.

  97. What does it mean then to live in light of the fact that Jesus is coming back?

  98. It means we're doing the work that the master has given us, and we don't want to be found asleep.

  99. We don't want to be found distracted, doing something else, going off on side quests,

  100. being found lulled into a false sense of security or complacency.

  101. Now I could leave it there.

  102. We could pray, and we could sing our final hymn.

  103. Live your life as if Jesus is coming back.

  104. But I want to call your attention to two different ways in which we live our lives in light of Christ's return.

  105. First, the priority of Christ's return.

  106. And second, the urgency of Christ's return.

  107. First, the priority of Christ's return.

  108. And second, the urgency of Christ's return.

  109. And so first, we'll talk about the priority of his return.

  110. There's a man named Richard Sibbes, who is a Puritan,

  111. and he lived during the 1500s and the 1600s.

  112. And he provides this example of the Christian life where he talks about it as if it's a stream.

  113. And he says, imagine you have this stream,

  114. and this stream is split into all these smaller, tinier streams.

  115. What's going to happen to the power and the force of that stream

  116. if you split it in a bunch of different directions?

  117. It's not going to have any power.

  118. It's not going to have any force.

  119. It's just going to be diluted.

  120. And so it's not going to be able to accomplish anything.

  121. On the other hand, imagine that the reverse is true.

  122. You have all these small, little streams,

  123. and they flow into this one large, great stream.

  124. Well, what's that stream going to be able to do?

  125. It's going to be able to bear in on something

  126. with all the force and power of that water.

  127. You're going to be able to focus everything in one direction.

  128. Now, coincidentally, it turns out that you have this illustration

  129. on the back of your worship guide from Richard Sivs.

  130. And he tells us what the main direction is that our stream is supposed to be headed.

  131. This is the last sentence.

  132. The main desire must be to be saved

  133. and by grace to have communion and fellowship with God in Christ Jesus.

  134. Unless this be the main care,

  135. the soul can produce nothing good.

  136. To stay awake,

  137. to live in light of Jesus' return,

  138. is to say all of our streams,

  139. every piece and point of our life,

  140. converges in this one direction.

  141. It goes back to the first catechism question.

  142. What is man's purpose?

  143. To glorify God and enjoy him forever.

  144. Whatever you do,

  145. it's meant to be driven in that direction.

  146. And so that's the priority of Christ's return.

  147. Whatever we do,

  148. we want the first question to be,

  149. how does this contribute to being prepared for Jesus to return?

  150. And so it means that as we are raising our children,

  151. we are keeping first things first.

  152. We are more concerned about preparing them for Jesus coming back

  153. than we're concerned about preparing them for college admissions.

  154. Because the kingdom of God,

  155. heaven,

  156. is more important than Harvard

  157. or USAPHA

  158. or UCCS.

  159. It means that as we are training our bodies

  160. and staying strong

  161. as fitness is important for us,

  162. we are not doing it for vanity.

  163. We are not doing it out of anxiety or fear,

  164. but so that we can do productive work for the Lord.

  165. That Ephesians 5, 16 would be true of us,

  166. that we would be making the best use of the time

  167. because the days are evil.

  168. It means that when the church gathers to worship,

  169. you are here.

  170. Because this is part of how you stay awake.

  171. This is how you're reminded of what is most important in life.

  172. This is how your stream is constantly redirected

  173. in the right direction.

  174. Being in worship pushes out other things in your life

  175. not the other way around.

  176. If Jesus is coming back and he is,

  177. this is how we stay awake together.

  178. It means as we arrange and think about our lives,

  179. success is not as important as character

  180. and godliness and holiness.

  181. Better to love God

  182. and no one to know our name

  183. than to be famous

  184. and be separated from him.

  185. For what does it profit a man

  186. to gain the world and lose his soul?

  187. For what can a man give in return for his soul?

  188. It's Mark 8, 36 and 37.

  189. Every yes is a no.

  190. Everything that you say yes to,

  191. you are saying no to something else

  192. because you have seven days and 24 hours

  193. in each of those days.

  194. Your resources are limited.

  195. Staying awake means

  196. when you make difficult decisions in your life,

  197. you always say yes to the kingdom of God

  198. and no to other things.

  199. Stay awake.

  200. And so I'm pleading with you all this morning

  201. on behalf of Jesus Christ.

  202. If you are not awake,

  203. wake up.

  204. Make first things first.

  205. Every yes is a no.

  206. If you are awake,

  207. keep awake.

  208. Stay awake.

  209. Now,

  210. I do want to say

  211. in relation to that,

  212. there are some

  213. who take teachings like this

  214. and they make the Christian life

  215. as a result of it

  216. a life of unusual

  217. and constant sort of austerity

  218. and intensity.

  219. You know,

  220. I preach this passage

  221. and suddenly

  222. it's mandatory

  223. for everyone to be in church

  224. six times a week.

  225. There's a famous preacher

  226. who at one point

  227. told people

  228. they were,

  229. they were,

  230. had their priorities off

  231. if they were collecting seashells.

  232. Somehow that was a sin.

  233. Okay.

  234. That's more a reflection

  235. of someone's personality

  236. and their anxiety

  237. than it is a biblical teaching.

  238. And so I want to just say

  239. on the one hand,

  240. it's good to enjoy

  241. all sorts of things

  242. in the right perspective.

  243. God created this world.

  244. He's glorified

  245. when we enjoy it,

  246. right?

  247. On the other hand,

  248. pleasure here and now

  249. is not our ultimate goal.

  250. Okay.

  251. So we do all sorts of things

  252. to the glory of God.

  253. There's all sorts of things

  254. we can point into that stream.

  255. Do them

  256. to the glory of God.

  257. Do them in light

  258. of eternity,

  259. whether it's your work

  260. or your play.

  261. It doesn't mean

  262. we don't enjoy this world.

  263. There is a way

  264. to ski

  265. in light of Jesus' return,

  266. but do it

  267. in light of Jesus' return.

  268. Keep it in the right place

  269. and perspective

  270. in the right season.

  271. We take all things,

  272. everything in our lives

  273. and we assess them.

  274. We direct them

  275. towards the fact

  276. that Jesus

  277. is coming back.

  278. We want

  279. all our small streams

  280. to be part

  281. of one large stream.

  282. And so I'm saying

  283. two things.

  284. On the one hand,

  285. it doesn't mean

  286. we stop enjoying

  287. any of God's gifts

  288. and we live sort of

  289. this monk lifestyle.

  290. On the other hand,

  291. it doesn't mean

  292. there aren't real sacrifices

  293. and trade-offs.

  294. We do say no

  295. to good things sometimes

  296. so we can say yes

  297. to God

  298. and his kingdom.

  299. We've talked about

  300. the urgency

  301. that we are putting

  302. first things,

  303. excuse me,

  304. the priority

  305. that we're putting

  306. first things first.

  307. There is also

  308. an urgency.

  309. We're not just doing

  310. first things first,

  311. we are doing

  312. first things now.

  313. There are some things

  314. that are simply

  315. daily actions, right?

  316. They're just,

  317. you're just being faithful

  318. day after day

  319. as you live life

  320. in light of Jesus' return.

  321. There are some things

  322. that you're just going

  323. to do every morning

  324. because Jesus is coming back.

  325. There are other things

  326. that are tasks

  327. that we are tempted

  328. to put off

  329. and so that takes us

  330. to the urgency

  331. of Christ's return.

  332. Imagine for a second

  333. that you're a student,

  334. maybe you're in college,

  335. and you show up to class

  336. and the professor announces

  337. there's a major research paper

  338. that's going to be

  339. a large portion

  340. of your grade

  341. for this class.

  342. And at the beginning

  343. he says,

  344. you'll notice

  345. on your syllabus

  346. there's no deadline

  347. for this paper.

  348. And the reason is

  349. I'm just going to roll

  350. into class one day

  351. and ask for you

  352. to hand it in.

  353. But you don't know

  354. which class

  355. that's going to be.

  356. What are you going to do?

  357. Well, hopefully

  358. when that class is over

  359. you're headed

  360. to the library, right?

  361. You are going

  362. to get to work.

  363. That's the only chance

  364. to hand it in.

  365. There's no late assignments.

  366. You can't run back

  367. to your dorm

  368. and get the paper.

  369. No, you need to be ready.

  370. If you come to that class

  371. you want to know

  372. that if he asks

  373. for the paper

  374. you have it

  375. to hand in.

  376. You're going to get to work.

  377. You're going to write.

  378. Procrastination

  379. is deadly

  380. if the deadline

  381. is unknown.

  382. Procrastination

  383. is deadly

  384. if the deadline

  385. is unknown.

  386. We're told here

  387. remember verse 32

  388. concerning that day

  389. or that hour

  390. no one knows

  391. not even the angels

  392. in heaven

  393. nor the son

  394. but only

  395. the father.

  396. Live life

  397. in light of Jesus' return

  398. and you don't know

  399. when he's coming back

  400. so there's an urgency.

  401. There are things

  402. that need to be

  403. taken care of

  404. now.

  405. There are certain things

  406. that are on

  407. a limited time offer.

  408. here's a few of them.

  409. Addressing

  410. broken

  411. and strained

  412. relationships.

  413. Living

  414. in light

  415. of Jesus' return

  416. means that we are

  417. tenderhearted

  418. and quick

  419. to reconcile.

  420. We do not want

  421. Jesus to return

  422. and to find us

  423. nurturing

  424. and coddling

  425. bitterness

  426. and grudges

  427. and lists

  428. of complaints.

  429. Reconcile

  430. now

  431. before

  432. it is too

  433. late.

  434. Do you want

  435. Jesus to come

  436. back

  437. and find

  438. that you're

  439. in the middle

  440. of an intense

  441. conflict

  442. with someone else

  443. in the church?

  444. No.

  445. Can you imagine

  446. what that would be like?

  447. Jesus is coming back

  448. in his glory

  449. and what are you doing?

  450. You're like spitting

  451. it out with someone.

  452. No.

  453. Stay awake.

  454. Live in light

  455. of Jesus' returns.

  456. Be quick

  457. to forgive

  458. and repent.

  459. Don't delay

  460. in healing

  461. your marriage

  462. because Jesus

  463. is coming

  464. back.

  465. Stay

  466. awake.

  467. Do you want

  468. Jesus to return

  469. in this picture

  470. that he's given

  471. for us

  472. on earth

  473. of what his

  474. relationship

  475. with the church

  476. is going to be like?

  477. You're in the midst

  478. of destroying

  479. that picture.

  480. No.

  481. Jesus is coming

  482. back.

  483. Stay

  484. awake.

  485. Don't delay.

  486. Your money

  487. here on earth

  488. will be worth

  489. nothing

  490. when Jesus

  491. returns.

  492. do you want

  493. Jesus

  494. to return

  495. and find

  496. that you

  497. have stored

  498. up no

  499. treasure

  500. in heaven?

  501. Stay

  502. awake.

  503. We don't

  504. want Jesus

  505. to return

  506. and find

  507. that all

  508. of our

  509. treasure

  510. is here

  511. on earth.

  512. There

  513. is an

  514. urgency.

  515. There is

  516. a limited

  517. time

  518. offer.

  519. the story

  520. is told

  521. of a man

  522. who had

  523. millions

  524. and millions

  525. of dollars

  526. and at

  527. one point

  528. he had

  529. to declare

  530. bankruptcy

  531. and someone

  532. asked him

  533. in light

  534. of the fact

  535. that you

  536. ended up

  537. having no

  538. money,

  539. do you

  540. regret

  541. any of

  542. the money

  543. that you

  544. gave away?

  545. Because you

  546. could have

  547. that money

  548. that could

  549. have helped

  550. you in this

  551. bankruptcy

  552. suit.

  553. and he

  554. said,

  555. the only

  556. money I

  557. kept

  558. was the

  559. money I

  560. gave

  561. away.

  562. Brothers

  563. and sisters,

  564. when Jesus

  565. returns,

  566. the only

  567. money you

  568. will have

  569. kept

  570. is the

  571. money you

  572. gave

  573. away.

  574. Stay

  575. awake.

  576. Live

  577. in light

  578. of Jesus'

  579. return.

  580. Don't

  581. miss

  582. the chance

  583. to give,

  584. not just

  585. financially,

  586. but in

  587. other ways.

  588. Don't

  589. miss the

  590. chance to

  591. do good.

  592. You may

  593. not have

  594. it tomorrow.

  595. People

  596. who are

  597. experts in

  598. leadership

  599. talk about

  600. the fact

  601. that good

  602. leaders have

  603. a bias

  604. towards

  605. action.

  606. They get

  607. things done.

  608. I'm going

  609. to suggest

  610. to you

  611. this morning

  612. Christians

  613. have a

  614. bias

  615. towards

  616. doing

  617. good.

  618. Do

  619. as much

  620. good

  621. as you

  622. can

  623. in light

  624. of and

  625. because

  626. of Jesus'

  627. return.

  628. Making

  629. the best

  630. use of

  631. the time

  632. because

  633. the days

  634. are evil.

  635. Finally,

  636. there is

  637. an urgency

  638. to repenting

  639. of our

  640. sins and

  641. following

  642. Jesus.

  643. No one

  644. knows

  645. the day

  646. or the

  647. hour.

  648. Do not

  649. be like

  650. Herod in

  651. Mark 6.

  652. Do you

  653. remember what

  654. Herod loved

  655. to do?

  656. Herod

  657. loved

  658. to listen

  659. to listen.

  660. But

  661. he would

  662. not

  663. act.

  664. He

  665. loved

  666. other

  667. things

  668. more.

  669. I say

  670. this with

  671. love for

  672. you.

  673. Some of

  674. you are

  675. nibbling

  676. around the

  677. edges of

  678. our church

  679. and nibbling

  680. around the

  681. edges of

  682. Christianity.

  683. Jesus is

  684. coming back

  685. and no

  686. one knows

  687. the day

  688. or the

  689. hour.

  690. The time

  691. to repent

  692. is not

  693. tomorrow,

  694. it is

  695. now.

  696. Procrastination

  697. is deadly

  698. if the

  699. deadline

  700. is unknown.

  701. Stay

  702. awake.

  703. Now,

  704. I gave

  705. you an

  706. illustration

  707. a little

  708. bit ago.

  709. That was a

  710. terrible

  711. illustration.

  712. I told

  713. you about

  714. a college

  715. professor

  716. who was

  717. going to

  718. come in

  719. and just

  720. announce a

  721. deadline.

  722. And I

  723. compared that

  724. to this

  725. passage to

  726. highlight the

  727. urgency.

  728. And there

  729. is a

  730. point,

  731. except

  732. excuse me,

  733. did not

  734. announce a

  735. deadline,

  736. announce an

  737. assignment.

  738. You didn't

  739. know when

  740. it was

  741. due.

  742. There's a

  743. point in

  744. which that's

  745. true,

  746. and the

  747. point is

  748. the point of

  749. comparison

  750. that's

  751. true is

  752. that we

  753. don't know

  754. the day

  755. or the

  756. hour.

  757. Here,

  758. though,

  759. is why

  760. that

  761. illustration

  762. was

  763. terrible.

  764. Jesus

  765. is not

  766. an absent

  767. college

  768. professor.

  769. And your

  770. work for

  771. him,

  772. your staying

  773. awake,

  774. is not

  775. a stressful

  776. deadline.

  777. Remember

  778. what we've

  779. looked at

  780. in this

  781. passage.

  782. Jesus

  783. is the

  784. one who

  785. loves us

  786. and cares

  787. for us.

  788. He is

  789. returning

  790. to us,

  791. not having

  792. abandoned

  793. us,

  794. but returning

  795. to us

  796. after a

  797. separation.

  798. He's

  799. made

  800. promises

  801. to us.

  802. Remember,

  803. he's faithful

  804. to the

  805. church in

  806. the first

  807. century.

  808. He'll be

  809. faithful to

  810. you in

  811. the 21st

  812. century.

  813. He made

  814. a promise

  815. in verse

  816. 11 that

  817. if you're

  818. in persecution,

  819. he's even

  820. going to give

  821. you words

  822. to speak.

  823. And then he

  824. gave us this

  825. promise two

  826. sermons ago

  827. in verse

  828. 13,

  829. but the

  830. one who

  831. endures to

  832. the end

  833. will be

  834. saved.

  835. Jesus

  836. is not

  837. some

  838. absent

  839. and

  840. irrational

  841. college

  842. professor.

  843. No,

  844. he is

  845. the one

  846. who is

  847. coming back

  848. for his

  849. people,

  850. has made

  851. promises

  852. to his

  853. people.

  854. And so

  855. staying awake,

  856. being prepared

  857. for his

  858. return,

  859. is not

  860. us

  861. trembling

  862. in fear

  863. at an

  864. administrator

  865. who's coming

  866. to evaluate

  867. our lives.

  868. No,

  869. we are

  870. making

  871. things

  872. ready

  873. for our

  874. heavenly

  875. father

  876. to

  877. come

  878. back

  879. and

  880. he

  881. will

  882. stay

  883. awake.

  884. The story

  885. is told

  886. of an

  887. air force

  888. pilot who

  889. returned

  890. from the

  891. first war

  892. in Iraq.

  893. He had

  894. finished his

  895. 300th

  896. mission

  897. and so he

  898. was immediately

  899. sit home

  900. without any

  901. notice.

  902. He and his

  903. team were

  904. put on a

  905. plane.

  906. They flew

  907. in that

  908. plane to

  909. Massachusetts

  910. and then

  911. they immediately

  912. got in a

  913. car and

  914. drove to

  915. their home

  916. places in

  917. western

  918. Pennsylvania.

  919. So they

  920. drove all

  921. the way

  922. through the

  923. night to

  924. get home.

  925. His family

  926. had no

  927. idea that

  928. he was

  929. returning.

  930. He gets

  931. dropped off

  932. in the

  933. driveway of

  934. his home

  935. just as

  936. the sun

  937. is rising

  938. and as

  939. he arrived

  940. he was

  941. surprised to

  942. find a

  943. banner across

  944. the garage

  945. door that

  946. said,

  947. welcome

  948. home

  949. dad.

  950. And he

  951. was surprised

  952. because he

  953. told no

  954. one that

  955. he was

  956. returning.

  957. He says

  958. this,

  959. when I

  960. walked into

  961. the house

  962. the kids

  963. about half

  964. dressed for

  965. school screamed

  966. daddy.

  967. His daughter

  968. Susan came

  969. running down

  970. the hall.

  971. She looked

  972. terrific,

  973. hair fixed,

  974. makeup on,

  975. and a

  976. crisp yellow

  977. dress.

  978. How did you

  979. know?

  980. He asked.

  981. I didn't,

  982. she answered

  983. through tears

  984. of joy.

  985. Once we

  986. knew the

  987. war was

  988. over,

  989. we knew

  990. you'd be

  991. home one

  992. of these

  993. days.

  994. we knew

  995. you'd

  996. try to

  997. surprise

  998. us,

  999. so we

  1000. were ready

  1001. every day.

  1002. Stay awake

  1003. for no one

  1004. knows when

  1005. the time

  1006. will come.

  1007. Let's pray.

  1008. Our Father in

  1009. heaven, we

  1010. praise you

  1011. and thank you

  1012. that you are

  1013. not a

  1014. cold and

  1015. calculating

  1016. administrator

  1017. coming to

  1018. see if we've

  1019. dotted our

  1020. I's and

  1021. crossed our

  1022. T's.

  1023. you're not

  1024. an absent

  1025. and arbitrary

  1026. college

  1027. professor,

  1028. but you're

  1029. the one

  1030. who loves

  1031. us and

  1032. cares for

  1033. us.

  1034. You've

  1035. made promises

  1036. that you'll

  1037. protect us

  1038. and you'll

  1039. provide for

  1040. us, and

  1041. most of

  1042. all, that

  1043. you will

  1044. come back

  1045. to be

  1046. with us.

  1047. We ask

  1048. that you

  1049. would drive

  1050. that reality

  1051. home to

  1052. our hearts,

  1053. that we

  1054. would live

  1055. more and

  1056. more in

  1057. light of

  1058. your return.

  1059. We ask

  1060. all of

  1061. these things

  1062. in Jesus'

  1063. name.

  1064. Amen.
