  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  11. We're returning now to our series in the Gospel of Mark,

  12. and you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection.

  13. And when we left off in Mark a few weeks ago, we were in Mark chapter 14,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  14. we got hit from both sides in the passage that we looked at.

  15. You'll remember we were looking at this passage where Jesus was anointed at Bethany,

  16. but before and after he was anointed, we sort of had this bookend,

  17. there's a plot that's going on to take his life.

  18. And at the same time, he's being anointed for his burial.

  19. So there's an anointing for burial, and there's a betrayer that's at work.

  20. We've already seen that Judas is getting to work to hand Jesus over.

  21. That's where we left off.

  22. And so it's with that in mind that we then proceed to this next section.

  23. That's what sets the stage for us.

  24. And we're just going to see a couple of simple reminders in this passage of things that the Bible tells us over and over again,

  25. which is Jesus' control and Judas' warning,

  26. which is a way of saying we're going to talk about the beauty of Jesus,

  27. and then we're going to talk about the danger of sin.

  28. We're going to talk about the beauty of Jesus.

  29. We're going to talk about the danger of sin.

  30. And so without any delay, then I invite you to turn with me to this passage.

  31. You can turn with me in your Bible.

  32. You can turn in your worship guide.

  33. You can turn on your phone, no matter where you turn.

  34. Remember that this is God's Word,

  35. and God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold,

  36. even the finest gold, and it's sweeter than honey,

  37. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  38. And so that's why we read now Mark 14, starting at verse 12.

  39. And on the first day of unleavened bread, when they sacrificed the Passover lamb,

  40. His disciples said to Him,

  41. Where will you have us go and prepare for you to eat the Passover?

  42. And He sent two of His disciples and said to them,

  43. Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you.

  44. Follow him.

  45. And wherever he enters, say to the master of the house,

  46. the teacher says,

  47. Where is my guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?

  48. Verse 15.

  49. And He will show you a large upper room furnished and ready.

  50. There prepare for us.

  51. And the disciples set out and went to the city,

  52. and found it just as He had told them,

  53. and they prepared the Passover.

  54. Verse 17.

  55. And when it was evening, He came with the twelve.

  56. And as they were reclining at table and eating,

  57. Jesus said,

  58. Truly I say to you,

  59. one of you will betray Me,

  60. one who is eating with Me.

  61. They began to be sorrowful and say to Him one after another,

  62. Is it I?

  63. He said to them,

  64. It is one of the twelve,

  65. one who is dipping bread into the dish with Me.

  66. For the Son of Man goes as it is written of Him.

  67. But woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed.

  68. It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.

  69. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  70. Our Father in Heaven,

  71. we thank You for the riches and the treasure that You have given us.

  72. In Your Word,

  73. we thank You for the pictures and stories You present to us of Jesus over and over again.

  74. And we ask that You would help us this morning,

  75. that You do that again,

  76. that You would put a spotlight on Jesus and His love,

  77. His care,

  78. His control.

  79. You'd help us to see Him more clearly

  80. than when we came in to worship this morning.

  81. So we ask that You'd encourage us.

  82. And we also ask that You'd challenge us

  83. with the example and the warning of Judas.

  84. Most of all,

  85. You'd remind us of Your grace

  86. and how You provide for us

  87. and our needs in the Gospel.

  88. We thank You

  89. that we can come with boldness

  90. to ask You for these things

  91. because we're not afraid of whether we've earned them or deserve them.

  92. We know quite simply that we haven't.

  93. But instead,

  94. we simply ask them

  95. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  96. Amen.

  97. You'll remember that

  98. we are now in the midst of the week

  99. leading up to Jesus' death

  100. and His resurrection.

  101. And Jesus has come,

  102. as many of the Jews have come,

  103. for the celebration of the Passover.

  104. And so there are thousands,

  105. tens of thousands of more people in Jerusalem

  106. than there would normally be.

  107. This city is packed,

  108. like you might expect,

  109. for an incredibly large conference

  110. or sporting event

  111. because people have gathered

  112. from all over the Jewish world

  113. to celebrate this festival together.

  114. And that's what we see in verse 12.

  115. On the first day of unleavened bread,

  116. when they sacrificed the Passover lamb.

  117. It's important then for us

  118. to be reminded of what exactly it is

  119. that they're celebrating

  120. when we talk about the Passover.

  121. If you're familiar with the story

  122. of God's people in the Old Testament,

  123. you'll remember in Exodus chapter 12,

    Exodus 12 chapter mention

  124. they need to leave Egypt

  125. where they've been kept as slaves.

  126. And God has performed a variety of miracles

  127. on judgments on the people of Egypt.

  128. And the last one he performs

  129. is to kill the firstborn of every family in Egypt

  130. because they will not let his people go.

  131. But he sets up a practice for God's people,

  132. for the Jewish people,

  133. to protect their own firstborns.

  134. What they're supposed to do,

  135. what God instructs them to do

  136. is to have this meal

  137. where they have a lamb that's sacrificed.

  138. And they take the blood of this lamb

  139. and they paint it on the doorframes of their house.

  140. And so as the spirit of the Lord goes through Egypt,

  141. it passes through Egypt,

  142. taking the lives of the firstborn

  143. of the Egyptian families,

  144. but it passes over God's people,

  145. the ones who have marked their doors

  146. with the blood of the lamb.

  147. And so that's quite simply why it's called Passover.

  148. It's when God passed over his people.

  149. And he gives this to them

  150. as something they celebrate every year

  151. as a remembrance of his faithfulness and goodness.

  152. and deliverance,

  153. that they are covered by the blood of the lamb.

  154. That helps us to understand the incredible symbolism

  155. of what's occurring here

  156. because Jesus is going to be the final

  157. and ultimate lamb whose blood is shed.

  158. We don't celebrate Passover anymore as Christians

  159. because we are covered by Jesus' blood.

  160. He's the ultimate Passover sacrifice.

  161. We'll talk about that even more next week,

  162. but that helps us understand how powerful this is

  163. that Jesus is going to celebrate Passover

  164. with his disciples.

  165. They're going to slaughter this lamb

  166. as he is going forward to be the final lamb.

  167. He's gonna provide an even greater blood,

  168. an even greater covering,

  169. that not just the people of God in Egypt,

  170. but we are passed over by God's judgment

  171. because of Jesus' blood.

  172. With all that in mind,

  173. this text doesn't just remind us of that.

  174. It raises some questions.

  175. Verse 12, again, there's this great feast that's at hand.

  176. And what's important to know

  177. is that you can't just celebrate Passover anywhere.

  178. It has to be celebrated within the walls of Jerusalem.

  179. You may remember I've told you over and over

  180. that Jesus and his disciples are commuting in from Bethany.

  181. That's where he's staying during this time.

  182. And so he's constantly traveling from the east

  183. towards the west into Jerusalem.

  184. Jesus has a commute every day,

  185. in other words, during this week.

  186. But now it's come time for something

  187. that cannot be celebrated at Bethany.

  188. And you can imagine it just would be true today

  189. if there was a major conference or sporting event,

  190. something where lots of people are gathering

  191. into another city,

  192. accommodations are gonna get snapped up just like that.

  193. The best Airbnbs in Jerusalem

  194. are not gonna be available for Jesus

  195. and his disciples forever.

  196. It is important for them

  197. to have made preparations in advance.

  198. And so we can understand this question

  199. that the disciples have in verse 12,

  200. where will you have us go

  201. and prepare for you to eat the Passover?

  202. It's a little late, by the way, to be making plans.

  203. You don't book a room the day of the conference.

  204. You book it months in advance.

  205. We have a conference that happens

  206. for pastors and elders in our denomination,

  207. and there's like a flurry when the rooms open up.

  208. And if you don't book it the day they open up,

  209. at this point, you don't get a room.

  210. And so there's all this drama, right,

  211. of trying to stay on top of when they're let out.

  212. It's surprising in a sense

  213. that Jesus' disciples don't know what the plan is.

  214. How is it that they can't be aware of it

  215. until this point?

  216. It is too late for them to make new arrangements

  217. to be in Jerusalem.

  218. There are tens of thousands of out-of-towners here.

  219. And so it's good news that we find out

  220. that Jesus has, in fact, made a plan.

  221. But why has Jesus not told them about his plan?

  222. Why has he kept this a secret from them?

  223. And why, when they ask him,

  224. does he continue to keep it a secret?

  225. Watch this with me.

  226. He doesn't tell them the answer.

  227. So verse 12, they ask.

  228. Verse 13, he has this whole code set up.

  229. So he sends out two of his disciples.

  230. He doesn't send them all.

  231. He says, you're gonna go prepare,

  232. but I'm not gonna tell you where you're going to end up.

  233. You have to go and identify this man

  234. who's carrying a jar of water,

  235. and he's gonna meet you.

  236. Now, this might seem like a strange sign,

  237. but you have to understand that in the ancient times,

  238. a man would not have carried a jar of water.

  239. He would have carried a skin of water.

  240. Women carried the pots or the jars.

  241. Men carried the skins.

  242. Why that is, don't ask me.

  243. But one person's explained it this way.

  244. It would be like Jesus said,

  245. go and find the man who has the pink purse.

  246. That's the man you're supposed to meet.

  247. And so this isn't as confusing as we might think,

  248. but Jesus has set up this kind of coded system.

  249. So they're gonna meet the man.

  250. He's got the pink purse,

  251. but he's not gonna tell them where they're going.

  252. He's going to lead them to the spot, right?

  253. And then they're going to get to the house.

  254. Verse 14, and wherever he enters,

  255. then say to the master of the house,

  256. the teacher says, where is my guest room?

  257. In other words, Jesus has not forgotten

  258. about arrangements for the Passover.

  259. Jesus has actually arranged a very complicated strategy

  260. far in advance.

  261. He set up a messenger with a special signal.

  262. This messenger is gonna take them to the safe house

  263. where he's gonna celebrate Passover.

  264. They're not gonna know what's going on until they get there.

  265. And then Jesus himself is gonna make sure

  266. none of the other disciples know what's going on

  267. until they get there.

  268. Verse 16, the disciples set out and went to the city

  269. and found it just as he has told them.

  270. And they prepared the Passover.

  271. Why all the secrecy?

  272. Well, remember what I reminded you of the beginning.

  273. There's two things from the previous passage,

  274. and I'm gonna add a third.

  275. Chapter 14, verse one, we found out the chief priests

  276. and the scribes were seeking how to arrest him

  277. by stealth and kill him.

  278. Jesus has people who are out for his life.

  279. And we learned that they were cautious

  280. about doing it with the crowds.

  281. They kind of need to do it secretly,

  282. but that problem's solved by Judas.

  283. Judas is going to help them out.

  284. Verses 10 and 11, the chief priests and Judas

  285. have this gathering and there's money that's offered.

  286. And so we're told, and he sought an opportunity

  287. to betray him.

  288. So Jesus has people who are out for his life.

  289. He has someone who's an insider,

  290. who's going to give up the goods.

  291. On top of that, we learn in the gospel of John,

    John 11 chapter mention

  292. chapter 11, the chief priests and the Pharisees

  293. had given orders that if anyone knew where he was,

  294. he should let them know so that they might arrest him.

  295. The point is this.

  296. Jesus is a master of operational security.

  297. Okay?

  298. Jesus knows that this plan could be easily sabotaged.

  299. He knows that Judas is seeking for an opportunity

  300. to betray him.

  301. And so none of the other disciples can even know

  302. where the meeting is happening.

  303. It is not an exaggeration, an overstatement to say,

  304. Jesus has set up a safe house

  305. so he can celebrate Passover without being killed.

  306. That's why all these steps have been taken.

  307. Somehow, without consulting any of the disciples,

  308. Jesus has set all this up.

  309. Jesus is going to allow himself to be arrested, right?

  310. We know that if you're familiar with the story,

  311. but his time has not yet come.

  312. Why?

  313. Jesus needs to instruct his disciples.

  314. Jesus has more than he needs to share

  315. with those who love him and follow him.

  316. Jesus still needs to establish their celebration

  317. of the Lord's Supper.

  318. He still has his time of prayer

  319. that he's going to invite them into

  320. that we'll see in a few weeks.

  321. In other words,

  322. Jesus is in control of everything

  323. at this very point of his arrest

  324. for the sake of those he loves.

  325. He's arranging detail after detail.

  326. He is meticulous and careful in every step

  327. so that he can care for them.

  328. I'm going to call your attention

  329. to this quote on page seven,

  330. which says,

  331. a God who is in control

  332. when the foundations of his own earthly existence

  333. are crumbling

  334. is a God who can be trusted to sustain us

  335. when it appears our life is tumbling in.

  336. Remember I told you at the beginning,

  337. we're going to do two things.

  338. We're going to look at the beauty of Jesus

  339. and we're going to be warned

  340. about the dangers of sin.

  341. And so just pause with me for a minute

  342. and let's look,

  343. meditate on the beauty of Jesus.

  344. Jesus is in the most painful week of his life.

  345. And in the midst of that painful week,

  346. his thoughts are not with himself,

  347. but with his disciples who follow him.

  348. Jesus in the midst of this painful week

  349. controls every detail.

  350. He's planned out every detail in advance

  351. so that he can be with them.

  352. Jesus continues to arrange the world

  353. so that his people are cared for.

  354. What he is most concerned about

  355. is making sure his disciples receive

  356. the shepherding they need.

  357. He's concerned that they receive

  358. the care that they need.

  359. Brothers and sisters,

  360. the same is true for us.

  361. God arranges and controls

  362. the tiniest details of this world

  363. for the sake of his people.

  364. That is his heart and his concern.

  365. Jesus cares for you

  366. at great cost,

  367. arranging all things.

  368. Jesus arranges all things

  369. when you're diagnosed with cancer.

  370. Jesus arranges all things

  371. when your child is ill.

  372. Jesus arranges all things

  373. when the culture and the world around you

  374. appear to become more evil every day.

  375. And when you PCS and move

  376. from one station to another,

  377. Jesus arranges all things.

  378. Jesus arranges all things.

  379. So just look with me at Jesus.

  380. His plans are never foiled.

  381. He already has it all figured out.

  382. That's true here

  383. as he's on his way to his death

  384. and he's caring for his disciples.

  385. And it's true for you

  386. this week and last week

  387. and next month and next year

  388. for the rest of your life.

  389. That is the glory

  390. and the beauty of Jesus.

  391. Remember the famous words

  392. of Gandalf to Frodo

  393. when he said,

  394. a wizard is never late

  395. nor is he early.

  396. He arrives precisely

  397. when he means to.

  398. Brothers and sisters,

  399. the same is true of our God

  400. as he works in our lives.

  401. That is the beauty

  402. and glory

  403. of Jesus Christ.

  404. We don't just see

  405. Jesus' control here though.

  406. We also have a sobering

  407. warning

  408. from Judas.

  409. Notice what happens

  410. at this meal.

  411. Jesus is eating.

  412. He's here

  413. with the twelve

  414. and he drops

  415. this truth bomb on them.

  416. Verse 18,

  417. Truly I say to you,

  418. one of you will betray me,

  419. one who is eating with me.

  420. Did you notice

  421. how the disciples

  422. responded to that?

  423. They didn't respond

  424. with indignation.

  425. In fact,

  426. we see in verse 19,

  427. they began

  428. to be sorrowful

  429. and to say to him

  430. one after another,

  431. is it I?

  432. The disciples

  433. grieve

  434. at the very thought

  435. that they might

  436. hurt Jesus.

  437. Just to think

  438. about such a thing,

  439. just to imagine

  440. such a thing

  441. is enough

  442. to make them sad.

  443. There's a

  444. sweetness,

  445. there's an innocence

  446. to the disciples'

  447. posture here

  448. that I don't want

  449. you to miss.

  450. They don't say

  451. I would never

  452. do that.

  453. Peter is going

  454. to say that later.

  455. But they don't say

  456. that here.

  457. They don't say

  458. I would never

  459. do that.

  460. No,

  461. they say,

  462. I hope it's not me.

  463. I hope I'm not

  464. the one

  465. who betrays

  466. our beautiful Lord.

  467. And so we have

  468. this example

  469. from the disciples

  470. of what a

  471. tender heart,

  472. a godly heart

  473. looks like.

  474. someone who's

  475. close to God

  476. and moved

  477. by his things

  478. is sorrowful

  479. even at the

  480. thought

  481. of betraying

  482. Jesus.

  483. Christian,

  484. is that

  485. your heart?

  486. Are you sad

  487. even at the

  488. thought

  489. of hurting

  490. our Father God?

  491. are you sorrowful

  492. even at the

  493. thought

  494. of damaging

  495. the community

  496. that you love

  497. through your words?

  498. Are you sorrowful

  499. even at the

  500. thought

  501. that you might

  502. be at risk

  503. of giving in

  504. to materialism

  505. rather than

  506. generosity?

  507. Are you sorrowful

  508. even to think

  509. about wallowing

  510. around in

  511. sexual sin?

  512. Do those

  513. things grieve

  514. you?

  515. Because they

  516. grieve the

  517. disciples here.

  518. Yes,

  519. the disciples

  520. are mistaken

  521. at many points

  522. and they

  523. love Jesus.

  524. And so

  525. even the

  526. thought

  527. of hurting

  528. him in this

  529. way makes

  530. them sorrowful.

  531. I'm going

  532. to call

  533. your attention

  534. to page

  535. eight of

  536. your worship

  537. guide where

  538. there's this

  539. beautiful quote

  540. from the

  541. Puritan

  542. Richard Sibbes

  543. who I've been

  544. quoting for a

  545. while now.

  546. He says,

  547. true humility

  548. quakes at the

  549. threats as the

  550. very frowns of a

  551. father will

  552. distress a

  553. dutiful child.

  554. Carnal

  555. people,

  556. he means

  557. fleshly people,

  558. people who

  559. don't walk in

  560. the Holy Spirit,

  561. are like men

  562. that hearing

  563. thunderclaps

  564. afar off are

  565. never a whit

  566. moved.

  567. But when it

  568. is present

  569. over their

  570. heads,

  571. then they

  572. tremble.

  573. So hypocrites

  574. care not for

  575. judgments that

  576. are afar off.

  577. In other words,

  578. hypocrites don't

  579. care about sin

  580. until they have

  581. to face its

  582. consequences.

  583. God's people

  584. hate sin even

  585. when they see

  586. the clouds

  587. on the distance.

  588. That's what is

  589. true of the

  590. disciples.

  591. Does that

  592. describe you?

  593. do you have

  594. a tender

  595. heart?

  596. A heart

  597. that is

  598. moved even

  599. at the

  600. thought of

  601. sin.

  602. We certainly

  603. want to have

  604. tender hearts,

  605. especially because

  606. Judas provides

  607. us with a

  608. very sobering

  609. warning.

  610. He gives us

  611. an example of

  612. what a hard

  613. heart looks

  614. like, and he

  615. shows us how

  616. we get

  617. there.

  618. Judas is

  619. already in

  620. the midst of

  621. finding time to

  622. betray Jesus.

  623. Remember,

  624. verse 11,

  625. he sought an

  626. opportunity to

  627. betray him.

  628. And then Jesus

  629. just says it

  630. outright.

  631. Truly I say

  632. to you, one

  633. of you will

  634. betray me, one

  635. who is eating

  636. with me.

  637. Eleven

  638. disciples have a

  639. tender heart.

  640. Sad at even

  641. the thought of

  642. betraying Jesus.

  643. One disciple

  644. is not.

  645. Which reminds

  646. us of this,

  647. it is possible

  648. to physically

  649. be close to

  650. Jesus and

  651. spiritually be

  652. far, far

  653. away.

  654. It is

  655. possible to

  656. be deeply

  657. embedded in

  658. the church

  659. and in a

  660. spiritual community

  661. and to be

  662. far away

  663. from Christ.

  664. Christ.

  665. It is

  666. possible to

  667. come week

  668. after week

  669. and join

  670. with God's

  671. people and

  672. to have a

  673. hardened heart.

  674. Jesus

  675. reminds us of

  676. this not just

  677. once but

  678. twice.

  679. Verse 17,

  680. he says that

  681. this person

  682. who's going

  683. to betray

  684. him,

  685. eating

  686. with him.

  687. Truly I

  688. say to you,

  689. one of you

  690. will betray

  691. me, one

  692. who is eating

  693. with me.

  694. Even worse

  695. than that,

  696. verse 20,

  697. one who is

  698. dipping bread

  699. into the dish

  700. with me.

  701. The gospel

  702. of John

  703. indicates that

  704. Judas was

  705. not just at

  706. the table

  707. with Jesus,

  708. he was sitting

  709. next to

  710. Jesus.

  711. He was as

  712. close as

  713. one could

  714. get and

  715. yet far

  716. away.

  717. And then

  718. Jesus outlines

  719. for us the

  720. most painful

  721. truth of

  722. all in

  723. verse 21.

  724. Woe to

  725. that man

  726. by whom

  727. the son

  728. of man

  729. is betrayed.

  730. It would

  731. have been

  732. better for

  733. that man

  734. if he had

  735. not been

  736. born.

  737. And Jesus

  738. is making

  739. the point

  740. that being

  741. separated

  742. from God

  743. is worse

  744. than if

  745. you never

  746. existed.

  747. Being

  748. separated

  749. from God

  750. fully,

  751. finally,

  752. eternally

  753. is worse

  754. of fate

  755. than never

  756. having

  757. existed.

  758. That is

  759. how bad

  760. it is.

  761. it is

  762. better not

  763. to have

  764. been born

  765. than to

  766. reject

  767. Jesus

  768. Christ.

  769. And yet

  770. as one

  771. of his

  772. twelve,

  773. that is

  774. exactly

  775. what

  776. Judas

  777. does.

  778. It is

  779. not hard

  780. for us

  781. either to

  782. figure out

  783. how Judas

  784. got there

  785. because Judas

  786. is someone

  787. who refused

  788. to struggle

  789. with his

  790. own sin.

  791. If you've

  792. been here

  793. before,

  794. when I

  795. serve the

  796. Lord's

  797. Supper,

  798. I say,

  799. hey,

  800. this table

  801. is not

  802. for you

  803. if you're

  804. refusing to

  805. repent of

  806. sin.

  807. And then I

  808. follow that

  809. by saying,

  810. but if you're

  811. struggling with

  812. sin,

  813. this table

  814. is for you.

  815. Which is to

  816. say that we

  817. know that the

  818. Christian life

  819. is not one

  820. in which we

  821. are finally

  822. free from

  823. the presence

  824. of sin in

  825. our lives,

  826. but it is

  827. one in which

  828. we're fighting

  829. against the

  830. presence of

  831. sin.

  832. And if we

  833. are not

  834. fighting against

  835. it,

  836. then the

  837. battle is

  838. in a sense

  839. already over.

  840. In John

    John 12 chapter mention

  841. chapter 12,

  842. we're told that

  843. Judas had been

  844. stealing from

  845. the money

  846. bags.

  847. This was

  848. not just a

  849. split decision

  850. where Judas

  851. woke up one

  852. day and

  853. decided,

  854. you know

  855. what,

  856. I'm going

  857. to betray

  858. Christ.

  859. No,

  860. day after

  861. day,

  862. week after

  863. week,

  864. Judas had

  865. chosen to

  866. no longer

  867. struggle with

  868. sin.

  869. Judas had

  870. chosen not

  871. to take it

  872. seriously,

  873. not to

  874. repent.

  875. And so

  876. beware.

  877. Beware of

  878. where you

  879. will end

  880. up if you

  881. refuse to

  882. fight the

  883. sin in

  884. your life.

  885. Jesus tells

  886. us and

  887. Judas shows

  888. us that it

  889. leads to

  890. death.

  891. That is

  892. what happens

  893. when we

  894. play with

  895. sin rather

  896. than

  897. fighting with

  898. it.

  899. It is

  900. better that

  901. we had

  902. not been

  903. born.

  904. Jesus'

  905. words here

  906. are deep

  907. and painful

  908. and sobering.

  909. And so

  910. the call

  911. for us

  912. is to

  913. examine

  914. our hearts.

  915. Are you

  916. struggling

  917. with sin?

  918. Are you

  919. fighting

  920. against it?

  921. We just

  922. prayed the

  923. Lord's Prayer

  924. a little bit

  925. ago.

  926. It said,

  927. we forgive

  928. our trespasses

  929. as we

  930. forgive those

  931. who trespass

  932. against us.

  933. are you

  934. refusing to

  935. struggle

  936. with sin

  937. by refusing

  938. to forgive

  939. those in

  940. your life?

  941. Are you

  942. refusing

  943. to share

  944. your addiction

  945. with anyone

  946. so that you

  947. don't have to

  948. walk in the

  949. light?

  950. Are you

  951. letting money

  952. and comfort

  953. convince your

  954. heart that you

  955. really, at the

  956. end of the

  957. day, don't

  958. need Jesus

  959. because you're

  960. powerful enough

  961. and secure

  962. enough?

  963. Are there

  964. hard truths

  965. and small

  966. failures that

  967. you know

  968. about but

  969. you just

  970. aren't going

  971. to face?

  972. Maybe hard

  973. truths and

  974. big failures.

  975. Judah shows

  976. us where

  977. that path

  978. leads.

  979. That it's a

  980. slow hardening

  981. of a heart

  982. until that

  983. heart becomes

  984. stone.

  985. There's

  986. different ways

  987. to think

  988. about what

  989. happens when

  990. we rub up

  991. against something

  992. over and

  993. over again.

  994. Sometimes people

  995. think of sin

  996. as sort of

  997. like a

  998. blister.

  999. You know

  1000. what happens

  1001. when you

  1002. get a

  1003. blister?

  1004. You're

  1005. hiking.

  1006. Maybe you

  1007. have bad

  1008. shoes or

  1009. bad socks

  1010. and your

  1011. foot rubs

  1012. on that

  1013. same place

  1014. over and

  1015. over again.

  1016. What happens?

  1017. It becomes

  1018. painful.

  1019. You can

  1020. feel it.

  1021. It creates

  1022. distress in

  1023. you so that

  1024. you want to

  1025. deal with it.

  1026. You want to

  1027. address it as

  1028. quickly as

  1029. possible.

  1030. Maybe you

  1031. have some

  1032. kind of mole

  1033. skin that you're

  1034. going to put on

  1035. it to protect

  1036. that portion of

  1037. your foot.

  1038. Maybe you spend

  1039. extra money on

  1040. socks so it

  1041. doesn't happen to

  1042. begin with.

  1043. It's tempting at

  1044. times for people to

  1045. think that's what

  1046. sin is like.

1047. I'm going to sin and

1048. it's going to be more

  1049. and more painful and

1050. I'm just going to be

  1051. forced to deal with

  1052. it.

  1053. In fact, what the

  1054. Bible tells us about

  1055. sin is very different

  1056. than that.

1057. It is not like a

  1058. blister.

  1059. It's actually a little

  1060. bit more like this.

  1061. If you play a

  1062. stringed instrument,

  1063. if you play a

  1064. violin or a

  1065. viola or a

  1066. guitar and you

  1067. play it over and

  1068. over, you know

  1069. what happens to

  1070. your fingers over

  1071. time.

  1072. You're going to

  1073. develop calluses,

  1074. right?

  1075. Your fingers get

  1076. thicker and thicker,

  1077. the skin does, so

  1078. that you can handle

  1079. pressing onto the

  1080. string.

  1081. In a sense, your

  1082. fingers become

  1083. desensitized to the

  1084. string.

  1085. We might even say

  1086. your fingers become

  1087. hardened.

  1088. That's actually what

  1089. sin is like.

1090. Sin is not like a

  1091. blister.

  1092. Sin is like the

  1093. calluses on your

  1094. finger from playing

  1095. an instrument.

  1096. The more and more

  1097. you come into

  1098. contact with it,

  1099. the less and less

  1100. seriously you take

  1101. it, the more and

  1102. more you refuse to

  1103. struggle with it,

  1104. the less you're able

  1105. to feel it.

  1106. The more hardened

  1107. your heart becomes,

  1108. the easier it is

  1109. to sin.

  1110. That's what happened

  1111. to Judas here.

  1112. Judas played the

  1113. guitar of sin long

  1114. enough that his

  1115. heart became

  1116. completely hard.

  1117. It was not a

  1118. blister.

  1119. Judas' heart was a

  1120. callous.

  1121. Don't let your

  1122. heart become

  1123. calloused by sin.

  1124. Don't go back and

  1125. touch it over and

  1126. over again thinking

  1127. it won't have any

  1128. consequences.

  1129. Thankfully, though,

  1130. there's a greater

  1131. hope for us than

  1132. that.

  1133. There's a sobering

  1134. principle here that

1135. points us to a great

  1136. truth.

  1137. Sobering principle,

  1138. I've told you,

  1139. verse 21, it's

  1140. better that you

  1141. wouldn't be born

  1142. than be separated

  1143. from God.

1144. And yet, what is it

  1145. that Jesus is about

  1146. to do?

1147. Jesus is about to be

  1148. separated from his

  1149. heavenly father on

  1150. the cross.

  1151. Jesus is choosing

  1152. something that is

  1153. worse than never

  1154. having existed.

  1155. That's how bad,

  1156. that's how painful,

  1157. that's how serious

  1158. Jesus' sacrifice on

  1159. the cross was.

  1160. He chose, in a

  1161. sense, Judas' fate for

1162. a time so that he

  1163. could save you.

  1164. Jesus chose

  1165. Judas' fate for a

  1166. time.

  1167. He was separated

  1168. from the father.

1169. In fact, not only is

  1170. he separated from the

  1171. father, he's

  1172. carefully arranging

  1173. everything towards

  1174. that end.

  1175. He will be arrested

  1176. when he is ready.

  1177. Brothers and

  1178. sisters, that is

  1179. how much our

  1180. Lord Jesus loves

  1181. us.

  1182. In fact, that's

  1183. how much he loves

  1184. you.

  1185. That's how much

  1186. pain he was

  1187. willing to

  1188. endure.

  1189. How could we

  1190. not have

  1191. tender hearts?

  1192. How could we

  1193. not be

  1194. sorrowful even

  1195. at the thought

  1196. of sin when

  1197. we see the

  1198. clear picture

  1199. of our Lord

  1200. and of his

  1201. love for

  1202. us?

  1203. It is not

  1204. hard at that

  1205. point, but

  1206. easy.

  1207. I have

  1208. told you

  1209. before as

  1210. we have

  1211. worked through

  1212. the gospel of

  1213. Mark that

  1214. there is an

  1215. observation that

  1216. has been made

  1217. that as you go

  1218. through the

  1219. gospel, the

  1220. third category of

  1221. people disappear.

  1222. At the beginning

  1223. there are three

  1224. categories.

  1225. You have got

  1226. people who are

  1227. on team Jesus,

  1228. people who are

  1229. against Jesus,

  1230. and people who are

  1231. just in the

  1232. crowd.

  1233. They are looking

  1234. on.

  1235. As we go through

  1236. the gospels, that

  1237. middle category

  1238. recedes into the

  1239. background.

  1240. There are those

  1241. who are for

  1242. Jesus and those

  1243. who are against

  1244. him.

  1245. And what the

  1246. gospel writer is

  1247. saying is that

  1248. as you see this

  1249. story of Jesus, as

  1250. you walk along

  1251. this road, ultimately

1252. you are in one of

  1253. those two camps.

  1254. You have to choose

1255. are you going to be

  1256. for him or against

  1257. him?

  1258. Are you going to

  1259. embrace the

  1260. Savior or will

  1261. you reject him?

  1262. Either you follow

  1263. the path of the

  1264. disciples, the path

  1265. of a tender heart,

  1266. or you follow the

  1267. path of Judas, the

1268. path of a heart of

  1269. stone?

  1270. Brothers and

  1271. sisters, which

  1272. one will it be?

  1273. Let's pray.

  1274. Our Father in

  1275. heaven, we thank

  1276. you so much that

  1277. you sent your

  1278. son to choose

  1279. something that was

  1280. so painful that it

  1281. was worse than

  1282. never having

  1283. existed, to be

  1284. separated from

  1285. you.

  1286. We thank you that

  1287. he did it for

  1288. our sake,

  1289. controlling and

  1290. arranging everything

  1291. at every point and

  1292. every moment to

  1293. care for us, your

  1294. people.

  1295. We ask that you

  1296. would show us that

  1297. in great clarity and

  1298. beauty, that we

  1299. would see Jesus and

  1300. his love and his

  1301. glory and his

  1302. sacrifice, and it

  1303. would melt our

  1304. hearts, that we

  1305. would have not

  1306. hearts of stone, but

  1307. hearts of flesh, not

  1308. hearts that are hard,

  1309. but hearts that are

  1310. tender.

  1311. We ask these things

1312. in the mighty name of

  1313. Jesus Christ.

  1314. Amen.

  1315. Amen.
