  1. If you don't have a Bible, you can turn in your bulletin.

  2. It's printed there for you.

  3. So we've been kind of making, or I've been making my way through 1 John with you guys

  4. in little breaks and chunks from Mark.

  5. But we're coming to the next section, which has some spicy stuff in it.

  6. So let's give our attention to the reading of God's Word.

  7. 1 John 2, verses 15 through 27.

    1 John 2:15–27

  8. Do not love the world or the things in the world.

  9. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

  10. For all that is in the world, all the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and

  11. the pride of life is not from the Father, but is from the world.

  12. And the world is passing away along with its desires.

  13. But whoever does the will of God abides forever.

  14. Children, it is the last hour.

  15. And as you have heard, that Antichrist is coming.

  16. So now many Antichrists have come.

  17. Therefore, we know that this is the last hour.

  18. They went out from us, but they were not of us.

  19. For if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.

  20. But they went out, that it might become plain that they are not of us.

  21. But you have been anointed by the Holy One, and you have all knowledge.

  22. I write to you not because you do not know the truth, but because you know it.

  23. And because no lie is of the truth.

  24. Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?

  25. This is the Antichrist.

  26. He who denies the Father and the Son.

  27. No one who denies the Son has the Father.

  28. Whoever confesses the Son has the Father also.

  29. Let what you heard from the beginning abide in you.

  30. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you,

  31. then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father.

  32. And this is the promise that he made to us, eternal life.

  33. I write these things to you about those who are trying to deceive you,

  34. but the anointing that you have received from him abides in you.

  35. And you have no need that anyone should teach you,

  36. but as his anointing teaches you about everything,

  37. and is true and is no lie,

  38. just as it has taught you, abide in him.

  39. Let's pray.

  40. Lord, we're thankful this morning for your word.

  41. We pray that you might bless it,

  42. especially the preaching of your word,

  43. and that it would take root in our souls,

  44. and that we might see Christ as more glorious.

  45. We pray these things in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. The anticipation of a big championship fight,

  48. a highly touted contender

  49. who comes in with all the brashness and arrogance of a champion,

  50. dressed maybe like Uncle Sam.

  51. He looks at his opponent,

  52. and he mocks him.

  53. Back-to-back titles, dressed to the hilt,

  54. everyone shouting his name, music blasting.

  55. His opponent does not stand a chance at all.

  56. Skinny, scrawny, unproven.

  57. Why is there even a fight after all?

  58. He's going to win.

  59. It's a foregone conclusion.

  60. And then comes the underdog,

  61. and he knocks the champion to the floor.

  62. Never been done before.

  63. Never happened.

  64. Completely taken off guard

  65. because he had underestimated his opponent

  66. because he thought

  67. that there was no chance that he would win.

  68. That's the opening,

  69. or really the culmination of Rocky.

  70. It's not opening.

  71. It opens the series, and it continues on.

  72. You know Rocky,

  73. the story of Rocky Balboa from the south side of Philadelphia.

  74. You know, he works in a meatpacking plant,

  75. and he trains for this big fight

  76. by punching big slabs of meat.

  77. And here is Apollo Creed,

  78. the champion who lets down his guard

  79. and then is taken off his pedestal.

  80. Not by any decision,

  81. because he actually wins the fight,

  82. but his name, his recognition,

  83. all of that comes with a champion,

  84. is taken away from him.

  85. All the support of all the on-watchers

  86. and adoring fans

  87. are now Rocky fans.

  88. That's a similar story

  89. that plays over and over,

  90. no matter if it's history,

  91. politics, and upset victories.

  92. The war in Ukraine.

  93. Whoever thought Ukraine would last this long?

  94. Or, in literature,

  95. think of Cinderella.

  96. Cinderella.

  97. No one would have thought

  98. anyone would fall for Cinderella,

  99. unless they would have

  100. surely sent her to the ball.

  101. Her stepmother and all those

  102. mean, nasty sisters

  103. would have supported her.

  104. But that's even where we get that term,

  105. the Cinderella story.

  106. It's because it's an unlikely outcome.

  107. But whether it's politics,

  108. or history,

  109. or literature,

  110. the underdog,

  111. the Cinderella story,

  112. is something that resonates with us.

  113. But oftentimes,

  114. what happens

  115. is the champion,

  116. or the supposed victor,

  117. who is certainly going to win,

  118. lets down their guard.

  119. That's what's going on in this text

  120. this morning.

  121. John is reminding Christians

  122. that they can't let down their guard,

  123. but they're going to end up,

  124. like Apollo Creed,

  125. knocked to the mat.

  126. John is saying,

  127. don't let down your guard,

  128. because there's something out there.

  129. The world.

  130. Don't let down your guard,

  131. because I'm warning you

  132. about the enemies of Christ.

  133. Those are two kind of things

  134. that influence Christians.

  135. And John is reminding these people,

  136. and us,

  137. that those two things remain

  138. even for us today.

  139. So those are the headings

  140. that we're going to look at this morning.

  141. This idea of the world,

  142. and this warning against

  143. the enemies of Christ.

  144. So,

  145. if you turn your attention

  146. back to God's word,

  147. let's look at verse 15.

  148. Do not love the world,

  149. or the things in this world.

  150. If anyone loves the world,

  151. the love of the Father

  152. is not in him.

  153. John's really clear here.

  154. Don't love the world,

  155. or the things that are in the world.

  156. That's a trickier statement,

  157. than at first glance.

  158. Remember,

  159. these instructions are coming on heels

  160. of John repeating,

  161. over and over,

  162. that there's these things,

  163. there's this group of people,

  164. that these Christians

  165. are going to have to endure,

  166. that they're influenced by,

  167. and they have to remember

  168. what God has done for them.

  169. They have to recall to mind,

  170. and live out of that,

  171. that is the gospel,

  172. what Jesus has done for them.

  173. They have to rest in that alone,

  174. because all these things

  175. are going to assault them,

  176. and challenge them.

  177. But John reminds them,

  178. that they're loved,

  179. they're called to abide in him,

  180. they're kept by Jesus.

  181. And on the heels of that,

  182. he's saying,

  183. if you're doing all these things,

  184. you don't love the world,

  185. or the things in it.

  186. In typical John fashion,

  187. he's going to restate this idea.

  188. He says,

  189. those that do love the world,

  190. do not love the Father.

  191. They do not love the things,

  192. that he loves.

  193. In fact,

  194. his love is not in them.

  195. But there's a couple of ways,

  196. in which scripture uses the word,

  197. world.

  198. This is my Father's world,

  199. we sing that song here.

  200. Is that what he's talking about?

  201. What about the famous,

  202. scripture that you hear,

  203. or you see,

  204. at all those sporting events?

  205. For God so loved the world.

  206. Right?

  207. Is it that sense of world?

  208. That he gave his only begotten son.

  209. Remember,

  210. that's the same author,

  211. that's right here,

  212. that penned these words,

  213. telling us not to love the world.

  214. So how can he tell us,

  215. that God loves the world,

  216. that he gave his only son,

  217. but he's telling us,

  218. as Christians,

  219. not to love the world?

  220. Those two don't seem,

  221. to fit together.

  222. It's this.

  223. When John uses the term,

  224. world here,

  225. he means not the created order,

  226. and all the things in it,

  227. including us,

  228. that were created by him,

  229. and that he's called good.

  230. Think about Genesis 1.

  231. He means,

  232. it is this.

  233. Look at verse 16.

  234. For all that is in the world,

  235. the desires of the flesh,

  236. the desires of the eyes,

  237. and the pride of life,

  238. is not from the Father,

  239. but it's from the world.

  240. The desires of the flesh,

  241. the temptations that we all face,

  242. the desires of the eyes,

  243. the things that we want,

  244. that we see,

  245. and we must have.

  246. The pride that we have in possessions,

  247. that's what he's talking about.

  248. Those are all euphemisms.

  249. That's sin.

  250. He's saying,

  251. those things that are in the world,

  252. that are sinful,

  253. whether they're good,

  254. distorted to be evil,

  255. because we place them on the pedestal

  256. of the most important thing in the world,

  257. or whether they're actually bad.

  258. Those things are the world.

  259. It's the same sense in which we often echo Paul

  260. when we say we're called out from this world,

  261. that we're in this world,

  262. but not of it,

  263. or the words of Christ when he reminds us

  264. that he is not of this world.

  265. Yes, he's physically there,

  266. but he is not of this world.

  267. John defines it here for us in verse 16.

  268. And scripture affirms that the world

  269. and the way of godliness

  270. are two separate ideas.

  271. And he's calling us to the way of godliness.

  272. The world and all that's in it

  273. is at odds with the Father.

  274. The irony here is that all of this,

  275. the allure of the world,

  276. is something we struggle with

  277. because we're in the here and now.

  278. And we struggle with it

  279. even though we know that it's fleeting,

  280. even though we know that it's passing.

  281. But why do we do that?

  282. Why do we continuously struggle

  283. when we know that the will of God

  284. abides forever?

  285. That that is made by a God

  286. that is infinite and eternal.

  287. Who doesn't want those things?

  288. And yet we settle for that,

  289. which is far less.

  290. The British writer C.S. Lewis reminds us

  291. when he describes his own struggle

  292. in the weight of glory.

  293. He says,

  294. You and I have a need

  295. of the strongest spell

  296. that can be found

  297. to wake us

  298. from the evil enchantment

  299. of worldliness,

  300. which has been laid upon us

  301. for nearly a hundred years.

  302. Almost our whole education

  303. has been directed

  304. to silencing this shy,

  305. persistent inner voice.

  306. Almost all our modern philosophies

  307. have been devised

  308. to convince us

  309. that the good of man

  310. is to be found on this earth.

  311. This idea

  312. that we have to wake ourselves up

  313. from this,

  314. this slumber,

  315. and this idea

  316. that we have to fight against

  317. finding all of our good

  318. on this earth.

  319. God is infinite, eternal.

  320. That is the thing

  321. of lasting worth and value.

  322. It's not these things

  323. that tempt us

  324. in this world.

  325. There are many things

  326. in this life

  327. that are fleeting.

  328. They're alluring,

  329. promising that they'll

  330. never,

  331. never actually deliver on.

  332. I have a friend like this

  333. that's always tempted.

  334. He's tempted

  335. by something

  336. in his normal

  337. day-to-day

  338. appeal

  339. that this thing,

  340. this action

  341. will actually lead

  342. to his ruin.

  343. He knows

  344. that it's not for his good,

  345. but he does it anyway.

  346. He knows

  347. that it's not for his good

  348. because I remind him

  349. of this.

  350. I remind him

  351. of this

  352. when I discipline him

  353. and give him

  354. a cold bath

  355. outside in the front yard.

  356. My friend

  357. is man's best friend.

  358. His name's Otter.

  359. It's not my pet.

  360. I don't have a pet Otter.

  361. That's really confusing.

  362. I have a dog,

  363. German short hair pointer

  364. named Otter.

  365. And the thing

  366. that he struggles with

  367. more than anything

  368. in this world,

  369. the thing that he's tempted

  370. by

  371. are these fluffy

  372. black and white things.

  373. See,

  374. Otter is from

  375. South Alabama

  376. where

  377. they don't really exist

  378. that often.

  379. He's not had that many

  380. experiences with them

  381. until he came here.

  382. But those tempting,

  383. fun,

  384. black and white things

  385. have this nasty smell.

  386. And even though

  387. he knows at this point

  388. through various interactions

  389. that this will not

  390. turn out for his good,

  391. that playing with that

  392. fluffy black and white animal

  393. is not going to be fun

  394. in the end,

  395. he still does it.

  396. He's done it

  397. on normal days.

  398. He's done it

  399. on Christmas Eve.

  400. He's done it

  401. by himself.

  402. He's done it

  403. with his friends,

  404. his litter mates.

  405. He's done it

  406. with my older dog

  407. who knows now

  408. to avoid those skunks.

  409. But Otter does it

  410. every single time.

  411. He's mesmerized by it.

  412. Even when they warn him.

  413. Even when they warn him

  414. with their teeth.

  415. He's still tempted.

  416. He doesn't learn

  417. from experience.

  418. He doesn't learn

  419. from the wisdom

  420. of his elders.

  421. He doesn't learn

  422. from correction from me.

  423. He doesn't learn

  424. from the effects of it.

  425. Having to get that cold bath

  426. of peroxide and water.

  427. Tomato juice doesn't work.

  428. He doesn't learn.

  429. He keeps going back

  430. again and again.

  431. It's because they're cute.

  432. Yeah.

  433. Yes, they are.

  434. He goes back

  435. and he pays the price

  436. every time.

  437. But we are kind of like

  438. Otter the dog.

  439. We play with the skunk.

  440. We play with the stench

  441. of our own sin.

  442. And we know

  443. that it will not be

  444. for our own good.

  445. We know it from experience.

  446. We know it from the words

  447. that we hear on Sunday.

  448. We know it from God's word.

  449. We know it from others.

  450. But yet,

  451. we return again and again

  452. to something that's empty,

  453. vain, and fleeting.

  454. But why?

  455. Why do we do that?

  456. It's because we're made

  457. of flesh and bone.

  458. We live in this

  459. created world

  460. that we're finite creatures.

  461. We're part of this world.

  462. But we are called

  463. to something more than now.

  464. We're called to resist

  465. those impulses of our flesh.

  466. We can't be deceived

  467. by this world,

  468. by our eyes,

  469. by what we can see,

  470. by our pride,

  471. by our sin,

  472. by our own apathy

  473. to that which is lovely,

  474. to God himself.

  475. There is an Anglican pastor

  476. who wrote this

  477. about this passage.

  478. And it's so fitting.

  479. He said,

  480. the world is the great rock

  481. on which thousands

  482. of young people

  483. are continually

  484. making shipwreck.

  485. Now, I think the qualification

  486. that we would make

  487. is not just young people.

  488. It's all people.

  489. We don't object

  490. to any article

  491. of the Christian faith.

  492. They do not deliberately

  493. choose evil

  494. and openly rebel

  495. against God.

  496. They hope somehow

  497. to get to heaven at last.

  498. And they think it proper

  499. to have some religion.

  500. But they cannot give up

  501. their idol.

  502. They must have the world.

  503. And so running after well

  504. and bidding fair for heaven

  505. while boys and girls

  506. turn aside

  507. when they become men

  508. and women

  509. go down the broad way

  510. which leads to destruction.

  511. We love the world.

  512. We are marked

  513. by worldliness.

  514. But we are called

  515. to seek after things

  516. that are eternal

  517. and to abide

  518. with the Lord forever.

  519. We are called

  520. to delight

  521. in who God is

  522. and what He has done.

  523. That we have to

  524. reorder our priorities

  525. and not see

  526. these good gifts

  527. as ultimate things

  528. and worship them.

  529. But worship Christ.

  530. That's what we are called to.

  531. That's what John

  532. is calling these people to.

  533. And that's a struggle

  534. and we will fail.

  535. But we must remind

  536. one another

  537. to return again

  538. and again

  539. to Christ

  540. and not to the things

  541. in this world.

  542. John reminds us

  543. to stand against the world

  544. but he also

  545. reminds us

  546. through this section

  547. that there's this other thing

  548. going on.

  549. He warns us

  550. to be on our guard

  551. not just against the world

  552. but against the enemies

  553. of Christ.

  554. Let's turn our attention there.

  555. Remember that John

  556. is writing to a people

  557. that he loves.

  558. So in verse 18

  559. when he says

  560. children

  561. it's not like

  562. they're their little child

  563. but children

  564. I love you.

  565. I want the best for you.

  566. I'm going to warn you

  567. of the impending danger.

  568. It's not demeaning at all.

  569. He's reminding them

  570. because he actually

  571. cares for them.

  572. He's reminding them

  573. because something is looming.

  574. It's not simply

  575. a battle of ideas.

  576. It's ideas that

  577. influence their lives

  578. and train wreck

  579. or shipwreck

  580. their faith

  581. against the rock.

  582. It's a battle

  583. of theological ideas

  584. and he's reminding them

  585. these real people

  586. that he loves them.

  587. Now I know

  588. in this first verse

  589. there's something looming

  590. that we want to jump to

  591. and it's that antichrist.

  592. But before we do

  593. we have to remember

  594. we have to look at

  595. all what's going on.

  596. There's also this term

  597. last hours.

  598. What does he mean by that?

  599. If John's writing

  600. in the last hours

  601. and we're still here

  602. was he wrong?

  603. Were those the last hours?

  604. Are these the last hours?

  605. John's talking about

  606. a quality of time

  607. not a quantity of time.

  608. So quickly we move

  609. to quantity

  610. but not quality.

  611. Think about the use

  612. of the term all

  613. in scripture.

  614. all men.

  615. It's really all types

  616. of men

  617. that it's often used.

  618. We should be concerned

  619. though

  620. because

  621. this

  622. can often be

  623. an attack

  624. against scripture.

  625. It's not the last hours

  626. he's talking about

  627. in terms of time

  628. but the quality of time.

  629. These hours are different

  630. or these last days

  631. are different.

  632. How are they different

  633. from before?

  634. Think on the timeline

  635. of scripture.

  636. At one time

  637. God spoke through prophets

  638. and through signs

  639. and types

  640. and shadows

  641. and now he speaks

  642. by his son.

  643. That's what the writer

  644. of Hebrews reminds us.

  645. In these final days

  646. and these last days

  647. that are different

  648. because we have Christ.

  649. That's how they're the last.

  650. So they're different days

  651. by which Christ

  652. now speaks.

  653. It points

  654. to something though

  655. that will have challenges.

  656. In verse 18

  657. he reminds us

  658. that we've heard

  659. that the Antichrist

  660. is coming

  661. so now

  662. many Antichrists

  663. have come.

  664. I have to admit

  665. when looking at this passage

  666. I was tempted

  667. to just be like

  668. hey

  669. I can just preach

  670. another passage

  671. right?

  672. Because this word

  673. comes with all kinds

  674. of baggage

  675. and immediately

  676. in context

  677. we see

  678. we know that term

  679. Antichrist

  680. but then

  681. we're reoriented

  682. because then

  683. it uses it

  684. in the plural

  685. and we have to think

  686. what's going on?

  687. But it gets

  688. our attention

  689. and most often

  690. we think of that term

  691. we think of Paul

  692. or Revelation

  693. this idea

  694. of this man

  695. of lawlessness

  696. a singular figure

  697. who opposes

  698. Christ

  699. and his kingdom

  700. but here

  701. it's plural.

  702. It's very different.

  703. simply put

  704. it's these people

  705. that are against

  706. the cause of Christ

  707. against him

  708. against his kingdom

  709. it's not a singular

  710. individual

  711. in this context

  712. it's all those people

  713. that are against

  714. Jesus.

  715. Now remember

  716. 1 John

  717. is a letter

  718. written to a church

  719. written to Christians

  720. to assure them

  721. to remind them

  722. to comfort them

  723. as they faced

  724. all these challenges

  725. and the challenges

  726. were those

  727. that were swirling

  728. around the community

  729. of Christ

  730. whether they have

  731. been part of them

  732. and then had gone

  733. out from them

  734. as we'll see

  735. or they were still

  736. within them

  737. promoting their ideas

  738. all about

  739. confusion

  740. over who Jesus

  741. was

  742. and what he had done

  743. those are those

  744. antichrists

  745. that he's talking about.

  746. Look with me

  747. at verse 19

  748. they went out

  749. from us

  750. but they were not

  751. of us

  752. for they have

  753. been of us

  754. they would have

  755. continued with us

  756. but they went out

  757. that it might become

  758. plain

  759. that they are

  760. not all

  761. of us.

  762. They were part

  763. of the covenant

  764. community

  765. they were part

  766. of the church

  767. and then they left.

  768. John's saying

  769. this is not

  770. simply a clash

  771. of ideas

  772. that happen

  773. in the classroom

  774. this happens

  775. in real life

  776. and these ideas

  777. have real big

  778. effects

  779. ramifications

  780. for real people.

  781. These aren't

  782. just minor

  783. theological

  784. fights

  785. you know

  786. the nerds

  787. have

  788. that really

  789. don't affect us.

  790. These are important

  791. in its life

  792. and death

  793. it's a real

  794. struggle

  795. over error

  796. over truth

  797. and lies

  798. but what are they

  799. struggling over?

  800. If it's that big

  801. of a deal

  802. what are they

  803. struggling over?

  804. Look with me

  805. at verse 20

  806. he reminds them

  807. they've been

  808. anointed

  809. by the Holy

  810. One

  811. that they have

  812. all the knowledge

  813. 21

  814. that I write

  815. to you

  816. because you do

  817. know the truth.

  818. It's not as if

  819. you don't know it

  820. there is no lie

  821. in the truth.

  822. He's writing

  823. them

  824. reminding them

  825. they have

  826. everything they need

  827. they don't need

  828. to be swayed

  829. by these new ideas

  830. they need to return

  831. again and again

  832. to the gospel

  833. and that what

  834. is contained

  835. in the message

  836. of their sin

  837. being paid for

  838. by Christ

  839. who's both God

  840. and man

  841. that is true

  842. that is lasting

  843. and there is no

  844. lie in them

  845. if they believe

  846. in that

  847. there's no lie

  848. in that

  849. but there is

  850. one that lies.

  851. John tells us

  852. that these enemies

  853. of Christ

  854. are those

  855. that deny

  856. Jesus

  857. they deny

  858. some aspect

  859. of who he is

  860. or what he's done

  861. we don't know

  862. exactly what it is

  863. but it's probably

  864. about him being

  865. God and man

  866. at the same time

  867. or

  868. him

  869. paying the punishment

  870. for sin

  871. they're confused

  872. but these

  873. Christians

  874. are called

  875. to love him

  876. if you remember

  877. this isn't the first time

  878. we've seen

  879. this clash

  880. of theology

  881. these people

  882. who are denying

  883. who Jesus is

  884. and what he's done

  885. are the same people

  886. back in chapter 1

  887. that said

  888. what?

  889. that they had fellowship

  890. with God

  891. these are the same people

  892. that said

  893. they have no sin

  894. not now

  895. not ever

  896. these are the same people

  897. that said

  898. they're walking in the light

  899. and John says

  900. more

  901. he says

  902. you can't walk

  903. in the light

  904. and then have fellowship

  905. with the darkness

  906. or he goes on

  907. in chapter 2

  908. and says

  909. these are the same people

  910. that said

  911. they walked in that light

  912. they've tasted

  913. and seen

  914. yet they did not know

  915. who Christ

  916. truly was

  917. was it his divinity?

  918. was it the fact

  919. he was God

  920. and man

  921. as we just confessed

  922. this morning?

  923. was it the fact

  924. that his death

  925. had impact

  926. for them

  927. even though

  928. they couldn't see

  929. the effects

  930. of his death

  931. on the cross?

  932. that he reigns

  933. now in heaven

  934. even though

  935. it doesn't look like it

  936. we don't know

  937. what it is

  938. but we'll see

  939. in a couple chapters

  940. what it is

  941. we don't know

  942. at this point

  943. we don't know

  944. exactly what it is

  945. but we know

  946. they have the wrong

  947. view of Christ

  948. and that is essential

  949. for any person

  950. that is saying

  951. they're walking

  952. with Jesus

  953. and I'm putting

  954. their trust

  955. in this

  956. God

  957. man

  958. to not know

  959. who he truly

  960. is

  961. one theologian

  962. has written

  963. that when we

  964. think like this

  965. we're taking

  966. the cross

  967. and we're rounding

  968. off the edges

  969. whether making it

  970. more palatable

  971. or easier

  972. to handle

  973. we're reducing

  974. the sharp lines

  975. that bring about

  976. the effects

  977. in this world

  978. that's what

  979. they're trying

  980. to do

  981. they're trying

  982. to reconcile

  983. this

  984. they're trying

  985. to shape

  986. the message

  987. and by doing

  988. so

  989. they're losing

  990. the cross

  991. in all of it

  992. John's correcting

  993. this

  994. he's saying

  995. it matters

  996. what you think

  997. about Jesus

  998. and little children

  999. I'm going to remind

  1000. you of all these

  1001. things

  1002. so that you

  1003. aren't led

  1004. astray

  1005. because Jesus

  1006. matters

  1007. remember

  1008. he's calling

  1009. them to remember

  1010. now

  1011. tomorrow

  1012. is a

  1013. is a

  1014. day of remembering

  1015. it's memorial

  1016. day

  1017. it's not

  1018. something that

  1019. we struggle

  1020. with in

  1021. modern America

  1022. remembering

  1023. Israel

  1024. struggle

  1025. with that

  1026. and God

  1027. did miraculous

  1028. things and

  1029. brought them

  1030. out of the

  1031. land

  1032. and they

  1033. were told

  1034. to build

  1035. memorials

  1036. they were

  1037. told

  1038. to remember

  1039. through days

  1040. they were

  1041. told to

  1042. remember

  1043. through

  1044. celebrations

  1045. and what

  1046. do they

  1047. do

  1048. they forget

  1049. now

  1050. memorial day

  1051. is a

  1052. national day

  1053. that we're

  1054. called

  1055. to remind

  1056. ourselves

  1057. of the

  1058. sacrifices

  1059. of people

  1060. for freedom

  1061. in this

  1062. country

  1063. the ability

  1064. that we

  1065. have to

  1066. have liberty

  1067. to have

  1068. life

  1069. to have

  1070. the pursuit

  1071. of happiness

  1072. and we're

  1073. called to be

  1074. thankful for

  1075. those sacrifices

  1076. but more

  1077. often than not

  1078. it's a day

  1079. that we just

  1080. cease working

  1081. that we celebrate

  1082. the start of

  1083. summer

  1084. we dust off

  1085. the pool

  1086. noodles

  1087. we fire up

  1088. the barbecue

  1089. and we celebrate

  1090. because summer

  1091. is here

  1092. around the corner

  1093. it's a little

  1094. tricky in

  1095. Colorado

  1096. the pool

  1097. is not so

  1098. warm right

  1099. now

  1100. we might

  1101. see snow

  1102. right

  1103. but in

  1104. this day

  1105. we have

  1106. this clash

  1107. of ideas

  1108. maybe even

  1109. clash

  1110. in our

  1111. own

  1112. hearts

  1113. because

  1114. for some

  1115. memorial day

  1116. is this day

  1117. that's the start

  1118. of summer

  1119. but for some

  1120. it's kind of

  1121. haunting

  1122. it's a

  1123. struggle

  1124. it's marked

  1125. by sadness

  1126. marked by

  1127. loss

  1128. marked

  1129. by guilt

  1130. and maybe

  1131. decisions

  1132. that you've

  1133. made

  1134. or others

  1135. have made

  1136. that have

  1137. been led

  1138. to the loss

  1139. of Americans

  1140. that's hard

  1141. that doesn't

  1142. look like

  1143. the pool

  1144. and barbecue

  1145. right

  1146. but as a

  1147. nation

  1148. we're called

  1149. to remember

  1150. this day

  1151. but some

  1152. of us

  1153. were marked

  1154. by more

  1155. introspection

  1156. and lament

  1157. and that's

  1158. okay

  1159. and that's

  1160. a good

  1161. thing

  1162. as a

  1163. kid

  1164. I was

  1165. part of

  1166. a family

  1167. that was

  1168. never

  1169. really

  1170. patriotic

  1171. on memorial

  1172. day

  1173. which

  1174. we'd always

  1175. spend it

  1176. at the lake

  1177. we'd go

  1178. like catfishing

  1179. and swimming

  1180. and enjoy

  1181. the day

  1182. and it always

  1183. struck me

  1184. like why did

  1185. we do

  1186. those things

  1187. if it was

  1188. a day

  1189. for remembering

  1190. are we

  1191. remembering

  1192. and as I

  1193. grew as an

  1194. adult

  1195. I started

  1196. to challenge

  1197. that

  1198. I said

  1199. hey

  1200. we have

  1201. multiple

  1202. generations

  1203. of people

  1204. who've

  1205. given

  1206. their lives

  1207. to this

  1208. country

  1209. who've

  1210. given

  1211. all of

  1212. them

  1213. we have

  1214. cousins

  1215. that I

  1216. don't even

  1217. know

  1218. because we

  1219. live all

  1220. around the

  1221. world

  1222. and I

  1223. asked

  1224. I can't

  1225. remember

  1226. if it was

  1227. my dad

  1228. or granddad

  1229. I asked

  1230. them

  1231. why don't

  1232. we do

  1233. the things

  1234. that other

  1235. people do

  1236. on memorial

  1237. day

  1238. why don't

  1239. we go

  1240. to parades

  1241. why don't

  1242. we do

  1243. you know

  1244. go to

  1245. cemeteries

  1246. which are

  1247. all good

  1248. things

  1249. and I

  1250. remember

  1251. the response

  1252. being

  1253. every day

  1254. is memorial

  1255. day

  1256. that our

  1257. whole lives

  1258. as multiple

  1259. generations

  1260. of people

  1261. that have

  1262. served in

  1263. the military

  1264. are marked

  1265. by these

  1266. memorials

  1267. and that

  1268. each day

  1269. we were

  1270. to live

  1271. as honoring

  1272. those

  1273. who paid

  1274. the ultimate

  1275. price

  1276. whether they're

  1277. friends

  1278. family members

  1279. and that

  1280. shaped

  1281. each and

  1282. every day

  1283. I think

  1284. that's what

  1285. we're called

  1286. to in memorial

  1287. day

  1288. is to remember

  1289. those things

  1290. and John

  1291. in this

  1292. section

  1293. is calling

  1294. them not

  1295. just to

  1296. remember

  1297. and set

  1298. it aside

  1299. but to

  1300. live each

  1301. day

  1302. moment

  1303. by moment

  1304. remembering

  1305. what Christ

  1306. has done

  1307. that's what

  1308. he's calling

  1309. them to

  1310. remember

  1311. not just

  1312. one day

  1313. of the year

  1314. and then go

  1315. on about

  1316. your business

  1317. but remember

  1318. second by

  1319. second

  1320. what Christ

  1321. has done

  1322. and even

  1323. more than

  1324. that

  1325. I'm going

  1326. to send

  1327. you one

  1328. that you

  1329. might

  1330. delight

  1331. and abide

  1332. in me

  1333. so that

  1334. it's going

  1335. to help

  1336. you live

  1337. that moment

  1338. by moment

  1339. in light

  1340. of what

  1341. Christ

  1342. has done

  1343. look at

  1344. with me

  1345. at verse

  1346. 24

  1347. let what

  1348. you heard

  1349. from the

  1350. beginning

  1351. abide

  1352. in you

  1353. if what

  1354. you heard

  1355. from the

  1356. beginning

  1357. abides

  1358. in you

  1359. then you

  1360. too

  1361. will abide

  1362. in the

  1363. son

  1364. and in

  1365. the

  1366. father

  1367. and this

  1368. is the

  1369. promise

  1370. he made

  1371. to us

  1372. eternal

  1373. life

  1374. this is

  1375. coming

  1376. on the

  1377. heels

  1378. of

  1379. understanding

  1380. what

  1381. they're

  1382. fighting

  1383. about

  1384. they

  1385. claimed

  1386. that

  1387. they

  1388. had

  1389. the

  1390. father

  1391. but

  1392. they

  1393. didn't

  1394. have

  1395. the

  1396. son

  1397. and

  1398. John's

  1399. reminding

  1400. them

  1401. that

  1402. they're

  1403. called

  1404. to

  1405. abide

  1406. in

  1407. God

  1408. and

  1409. abide

  1410. in him

  1411. because

  1412. they're

  1413. sending

  1414. them

  1415. the

  1416. Holy

  1417. Spirit

  1418. he's

  1419. sending

  1420. them

  1421. someone

  1422. to help

  1423. them

  1424. it's

  1425. not a

  1426. disassociated

  1427. remembering

  1428. it's

  1429. living

  1430. moment

  1431. by

  1432. moment

  1433. even

  1434. when

  1435. he

  1436. feels

  1437. far

  1438. and

  1439. distant

  1440. living

  1441. by

  1442. his

  1443. help

  1444. living

  1445. by

  1446. what

  1447. he

  1448. has

  1449. done

  1450. God

  1451. doesn't

  1452. say

  1453. just

  1454. think

  1455. real

  1456. hard

  1457. and

  1458. then

  1459. you

  1460. can

  1461. fight

  1462. against

  1463. the

  1464. schemes

  1465. of

  1466. the

  1467. devil

  1468. this

  1469. world

  1470. these

  1471. theological

  1472. ideas

  1473. he

  1474. says

  1475. no

  1476. abide

  1477. in

  1478. him

  1479. live

  1480. out

  1481. of

  1482. him

  1483. it's

  1484. not

  1485. simple

  1486. remembering

  1487. of

  1488. what

  1489. Christ

  1490. has

  1491. done

  1492. in

  1493. the

  1494. past

  1495. and

  1496. going

  1497. on

  1498. about

  1499. our

  1500. day

  1501. but

  1502. living

  1503. each

  1504. day

  1505. in

  1506. light

  1507. of

  1508. what

  1509. he

  1510. has

  1511. done

  1512. it's

  1513. not

  1514. facts

  1515. trapped

  1516. in

  1517. our

  1518. brains

  1519. but

  1520. he's

  1521. given

  1522. his

  1523. spirit

  1524. to

  1525. remain

  1526. in

  1527. us

  1528. to

  1529. live

  1530. with

  1531. us

  1532. so

  1533. we

  1534. might

  1535. abide

  1536. in

  1537. the

  1538. son

  1539. and

  1540. the

  1541. father

  1542. it

  1543. moves

  1544. past

  1545. memorial

  1546. and

  1547. it

  1548. moves

  1549. towards

  1550. transformation

  1551. that

  1552. each

  1553. day

  1554. has

  1555. a

  1556. component

  1557. of

  1558. remembering

  1559. but

  1560. each

  1561. day

  1562. is

  1563. being

  1564. renewed

  1565. then

  1566. we

  1567. can

  1568. see

  1569. the

  1570. beauty

  1571. of

  1572. this

  1573. world

  1574. and

  1575. we're

  1576. not

  1577. captive

  1578. to

  1579. it

  1580. we

  1581. can

  1582. see

  1583. our

  1584. highest

  1585. good

  1586. not

  1587. as

  1588. the

  1589. things

  1590. that

  1591. we

  1592. can

  1593. attain

  1594. or

  1595. the

  1596. things

  1597. that

  1598. we

  1599. want

  1600. or

  1601. the

  1602. things

  1603. that

  1604. we

  1605. don't

  1606. have

  1607. but

  1608. the

  1609. ultimate

  1610. good

  1611. is

  1612. Christ

  1613. we

  1614. see

  1615. that

  1616. when

  1617. we

  1618. live

  1619. moment

  1620. by

  1621. moment

  1622. abiding

  1623. in

  1624. him

  1625. we

  1626. see

  1627. that

  1628. most

  1629. clearly

  1630. we're

  1631. not

  1632. captive

  1633. to

  1634. our

  1635. eyes

  1636. we're

  1637. not

  1638. captive

  1639. to

  1640. the

  1641. desires

  1642. of

  1643. our

  1644. flesh

  1645. or

  1646. even

  1647. big

  1648. grand

  1649. theological

  1650. arguments

  1651. we

  1652. see

  1653. Jesus

  1654. as

  1655. he

  1656. truly

  1657. is

  1658. and

  1659. we're

  1660. freed

  1661. we're

  1662. freed

  1663. not

  1664. just

  1665. from

  1666. in

  1667. the

  1668. sense

  1669. of

  1670. having

  1671. liberty

  1672. but

  1673. we're

  1674. freed

  1675. from

  1676. the

  1677. power

  1678. of

  1679. sin

  1680. and

  1681. death

  1682. we're

  1683. freed

  1684. by

  1685. Jesus

  1686. himself

  1687. and

  1688. his

  1689. actions

  1690. on

  1691. the

  1692. cross

  1693. we're

  1694. freed

  1695. to

  1696. serve

  1697. him

  1698. we're

  1699. freed

  1700. to

  1701. stand

  1702. on

  1703. our

  1704. guard

  1705. by

  1706. abiding

  1707. in

  1708. him

  1709. John

  1710. reminds

  1711. us

  1712. that

  1713. it's

  1714. no

  1715. new

  1716. knowledge

  1717. that

  1718. we

  1719. need

  1720. it's

  1721. this

  1722. old

  1723. old

  1724. story

  1725. and

  1726. these

  1727. ideas

  1728. they're

  1729. going

  1730. to

  1731. assault

  1732. us

  1733. even

  1734. the

  1735. world's

  1736. going

  1737. to

  1738. assault

  1739. us

  1740. but

  1741. we

  1742. have

  1743. him

  1744. and

  1745. we

  1746. live

  1747. in

  1748. him

  1749. so

  1750. Christian

  1751. be

  1752. on

  1753. your

  1754. guard

  1755. be

  1756. on

  1757. your

  1758. guard

  1759. against

  1760. the

  1761. world

  1762. be

  1763. on

  1764. your

  1765. guard

  1766. against

  1767. these

  1768. things

  1769. that

  1770. the

  1771. enemies

  1772. of

  1773. Christ

  1774. espouse

  1775. these

  1776. new

  1777. ideas

  1778. that

  1779. seek

  1780. to

  1781. destroy

  1782. what

  1783. is

  1784. true

  1785. and

  1786. right

  1787. and

  1788. beautiful

  1789. that

  1790. seek

  1791. to

  1792. destroy

  1793. what

  1794. we

  1795. see

  1796. from

  1797. scripture

  1798. of

  1799. God

  1800. himself

  1801. stand

  1802. on

  1803. guard

  1804. that

  1805. we

  1806. might

  1807. remember

  1808. that

  1809. each

  1810. day

  1811. our

  1812. lives

  1813. have

  1814. been

  1815. changed

  1816. by the

  1817. glory

  1818. of

  1819. the

  1820. gospel

  1821. the

  1822. glory

  1823. of

  1824. Christ

  1825. let's

  1826. pray

  1827. about

  1828. those

  1829. who

  1830. want

  1831. anything

  1832. to
