  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain

  2. Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today. A special welcome if

  3. you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not

  4. because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community,

  5. and as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good. They don't

  6. need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back

  7. week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word. We're continuing and actually ending

  8. our series in the Gospel of Mark, and you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of

  9. Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection, and I reminded you last week that our journey in

  10. Mark was not meant to be merely an intellectual exercise. It would be a great tragedy, as I said,

  11. for us to move on to the book of Judges next month and to merely think of Mark as just a book that we

  12. looked at at some point, because that's not Mark's intention. That's not his goal in writing this

  13. Gospel. His goal is that we would see Jesus and that we would be changed, and I've also been telling

  14. you over and over again that as the Gospel progresses, you move from three groups of people

  15. to two groups of people. First, you have three groups, those who are for Jesus, those who are

  16. against Him, and those who are in the middle. And as we come to the very end, the middle group

  17. disappears. There are those who are for Jesus and those who are against Him. And so Mark really gives us

  18. a double ending here, two different pictures of two people responding well to Jesus. Last week,

  19. we looked at Joseph of Arimathea, and you will remember that Joseph's response was this. He was

  20. willing to lose his kingdom for the sake of God's kingdom. Joseph was willing to lose his kingdom for

  21. God's kingdom. And we're going to return again to this same question, the question we started with at

  22. the very beginning of the Gospel. Who is Jesus, and how do we respond to Him? We're going to have one

  23. final model as we come to the end. Now, you may be wondering at this point, if you've looked in your

  24. Bible, what do you mean that we've come to the end? I only see verses 1 through 8, and my Bible has an

  25. additional section of verses 8 through 20. Why are we not going to talk about that? Why are we suddenly

  26. ending the Gospel now? You may see, if you have an ESV, it has this note, some of the earliest

  27. manuscripts do not include 16 verses 9 through 20. In fact, most scholars do not consider verses 9

  28. through 20 to be original. In other words, most scholars are convinced Mark did not write verses

  29. 9 through 20. And so we're not going to cover it here in worship, because our goal is we're here in

  30. worship together, as I say every week, is that we're looking at God's Word. And so I don't want to say,

  31. hey, this is God's Word, when it's unclear to us, it's doubtful that it is. Now, you may be thinking

  32. at this point, wow, I can't trust the Bible. And that's the last thing that I want you to be thinking,

  33. because what I actually want you to see here is how seriously we take the Scriptures. So seriously

  34. that your Bible has a note in it, making sure you know there are certain sections that don't appear in

  35. the earliest manuscripts. Okay, so actually I want you to increase your trust in it. Oh, when there's

  36. something going on with the original manuscripts, my Bible's going to tell me, so I can have confidence

  37. in what it is that I'm reading. Now, that raises another question for us, which relates to our

  38. passage this morning. Why would someone add on an extra ending to the Gospel of Mark? And one

  39. explanation is this, and I think this is probably one of, if not the most likely answer. Mark ends his

  40. Gospel in a very strange way. Look at the last two words of verse 8. Really, the last four words,

  41. for they were afraid. Why in the world would Mark, after we have taken this journey with Jesus,

  42. right after we have seen his death and resurrection, decide to end his story with a group of women being

  43. afraid? Why would he end the story that way after he's told us things that we should be looking

  44. forward to? Jesus is moving forward to Galilee, right? Why isn't it that we're going to hear that

  45. story? He tells these women they're meant to go forward and be witnesses and share these things with

  46. the followers of Jesus. Why don't we get to hear about that? It's those questions, I believe, that

  47. cause certain people later to write an ending because they were unsatisfied with the way that Mark

  48. left things. It seems abrupt and strange. And I'm going to suggest to you this morning

  49. that if we understand fear rightly, this ending is incredibly fitting to Mark. It's incredibly

  50. fitting to Mark, and it's actually fitting to the witness of the rest of the Scriptures. It makes sense,

  51. as I'll explain to you in a minute, that Mark would end his gospel in exactly this way. Once again,

  52. and for the last time, he's giving us a picture. How should we respond to Jesus? And so as with that,

  53. I'm going to invite you to turn with me to Mark chapter 16. You can turn in your Bible. You can turn

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  54. on your phone. You can turn in your worship guide. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's

  55. word. And God says in Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5, we're told every word of God proves true. He is a

    Proverbs 30:5

  56. shield to those who take refuge in him. And so that's why we're going to start now reading Mark

    Mark 16 chapter mention

  57. chapter 16 at verse 1. When the Sabbath was passed, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome

  58. bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week, when the

  59. sun had risen, they went to the tomb. And they were saying to one another, who will roll away the stone

  60. for us from the entrance of the tomb? And looking up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back.

  61. It was very large. Verse 5, and entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side,

  62. dressed in a white robe, and they were alarmed. And he said to them, do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of

  63. Nazareth who is crucified. He has risen. He is not here. See the place where they laid him. Verse 7,

  64. but go tell his disciples and Peter that he is going before you to Galilee. There you will see him just

  65. as he told you. And they went out and fled from the tomb, for trembling and astonishment had seized

  66. them. And they said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. I invite you to pray with me as we

  67. come to this portion of God's word. Our Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you again that you

  68. have not left us to stumble around trying to figure out life on our own, but instead you have given us

  69. your word, given us your instructions about how to walk in this world. You've given us reminders about

  70. your glory and your grace. And most of all, you've given us a vision of Jesus Christ. We ask that one

  71. more time you would show us Jesus, that we would see his beauty and his glory, and it would lead us

  72. to worship him, to love him, to follow him, to obey him. We ask all these things in the mighty name of

  73. Jesus Christ. Amen. I want you to think back just one week to how we ended our story last week.

  74. The very last verse in chapter 15, we were told, verse 47, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of

  75. Joseph saw where he was laid. Now that was not a random remark. It was meant for us to know they

  76. are doing their homework. This plan that they're about to execute has been in the works ever since

  77. Jesus has been put in the tomb. They have made a note of where Jesus' body is so they can do this

  78. very thing that we see in this passage, so that they can go and anoint his body with spices and oil.

  79. Now, they've been delayed in this task because they can't do that on the Jewish Holy Day. They're not

  80. able to do it on the Sabbath, and that's why we're told in verse 1, when the Sabbath was passed. In other

  81. words, they have been waiting. They've been waiting until the moment when they can finally go and honor

  82. Jesus' body. They're buying spices then. This is again, verse 1, Saturday evening. This would be after

  83. the Sabbath is over because it would have gone from Friday evening sunset to Saturday evening at sundown

  84. so that they can be ready, verse 2, to go as soon as possible to care for Jesus. So they've done their

  85. homework. They've noted the location of the tomb. They have their assignment and their mission. They

  86. want to honor Jesus' body, and they get after it as quickly as they can. You can sort of sense their

  87. impatience here. They've been honoring the Holy Day, and they're trying to get there as fast as possible.

  88. That's why we're told in verse 2, it is very early on the first day of the week that they went to the

  89. tomb. In fact, they've gone so early that they have not done all the appropriate planning that they

  90. should have. So it seems that while they're running to the tomb, verse 3, it suddenly occurs to them,

  91. oh wait, we didn't make a plan to deal with the stone that's rolled in front. And these stones would

  92. have been incredibly large, and so these three women would not have been capable of doing it on

  93. their own. And so we can sense their anxiety and their fear as they're approaching for this important

  94. task to take care of Jesus' body. They realize they haven't quite done everything because they know

  95. that they're not able to roll the stone away by themselves. And so that's why we see in verse 3,

  96. who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance of the tomb? Now, this also reminds us

  97. that when this angel in verse 7, and we'll talk about why it's an angel, calls them out, because he

  98. does call them out, he says, this is what he told you. Go tell his disciples and Peter that he is going

  99. before you to Galilee. There you will see him just as he told you. In other words, these women have not

  100. put the pieces together. And not just them, none of Jesus' followers have put the pieces together.

  101. Jesus has told them over and over in the Gospels, I'm going to die, and then after three days, I'm going

  102. to rise again. And so really, it should be the expectation, as these women are going to the tomb,

  103. their expectation should be that Jesus has risen. But of course, just like everyone else, this has

  104. gone over their heads. I say all this to understand, as you understand the story, their surprise when

  105. they finally arrive at the tomb. Verse 4, we can imagine their relief. Looking up, they saw that the

  106. stone had been rolled back. And in case we'd forgotten, we're reminded that it's very large, so

  107. they're not able to do it on their own. That, of course, might cause them to be anxious and worry about

  108. what had happened to Jesus' body. But things get even worse after that. Verse 5,

  109. And entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed in a white robe,

  110. and they were alarmed. Now, we can imagine their alarm is for a variety of reasons. One,

  111. they're not expecting to find someone else in this tomb so early in the morning, right after the

  112. Sabbath day has passed. But there's another reason that they would find this man alarming. It's

  113. understated here. We are told simply that he is dressed in a white robe. The other Gospels help

  114. us understand this is more than just a white robe. Matthew chapter 28 says his appearance was like

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  115. lightning and his clothing white as snow. Luke, in chapter 24, tells us he had dazzling apparel.

  116. I think that's going to be my goal from now on. I want people to say, look at him. He's got dazzling

  117. apparel. But we can understand their shock, right? We can understand why it is they are alarmed.

  118. They're alarmed because they're probably wondering, okay, what has happened to Jesus' body? There's a

  119. potential that his body has been stolen and taken away just as they are coming to anoint him.

  120. They're terrified because here is someone who is clearly more than human. He's more than human

  121. because of his appearance. And he's also more than human because of his knowledge. What is this

  122. man able to do? And it's more than a man. Matthew's Gospel confirms for us this is, in fact, an angel.

  123. So really, we could say he just looks like a man. Matthew also confirms for us, by the way,

  124. that it's the angel who moved the stone away. So he's done them a huge favor here.

  125. But we know he's more than human, not just because of his appearance, but because of his knowledge.

  126. Verse 7 and verse 6. He's able to tell them what no human would know at this point.

  127. Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He is risen. He is not here.

  128. Without that explanation, we would simply assume that Jesus' body had been stolen.

  129. It's not enough for there to be an empty tomb.

  130. There has to be an empty tomb because Jesus has risen from the dead.

  131. That, then, is why the angel tells them, verse 6, don't be alarmed.

  132. Even though I'm a scary angel, the body wasn't stolen.

  133. Don't be alarmed.

  134. Even though I have dazzling apparel,

  135. Jesus has risen from the dead.

  136. And, by the way, Jesus told you that over and over and over.

  137. Things have happened just as he said.

  138. Now, there's plenty of things that we could say about Jesus' resurrection.

  139. And I'm not going to say those things this morning

  140. because I don't believe that is actually the focus of this particular passage.

  141. Yes, we see Jesus' resurrection,

  142. and Mark's focus, what he spends time on,

  143. is telling us about the response to the resurrection.

  144. What Mark wants us to see is what these women do with it.

  145. And so we're going to focus on that this morning.

  146. Before we do, though, I want to quickly say one thing

  147. that I want you to notice in verse 7.

  148. Go tell his disciples and Peter.

  149. Now, why should they need to go to tell the disciples and Peter?

  150. That doesn't make sense

  151. because Peter is actually one of the disciples.

  152. It would be like I said,

  153. okay, go talk to all the new deacons we just installed and Greg.

  154. That doesn't make sense.

  155. Greg is one of the new deacons.

  156. You don't need to add him onto the list.

  157. Except Peter is the one who denied Christ.

  158. In fact, some people think he said,

  159. tell the disciples and Peter,

  160. it's possible that Peter was so ashamed by what he had done

  161. that that would be a separate trip.

  162. In other words, it's possible that Peter

  163. has actually isolated himself away from the other disciples.

  164. And so as Jesus tells these women to go and share the news,

  165. he remembers that he and Peter have not interacted

  166. since they made eye contact after Peter's denial.

  167. And so as we look towards these women's response

  168. to Christ and his resurrection,

  169. I don't want you to miss this moment of grace

  170. that the forefront of Jesus' mind

  171. is Peter's denial

  172. and Jesus' desire to reunite with him.

  173. One question the readers might ask of this passage

  174. is what is it that Jesus is going to do

  175. when he finds his disciples?

  176. The last thing they did was abandon him.

  177. Should they be scared of Jesus coming and talking to them?

  178. Should they be afraid that Jesus is going to come

  179. and rebuke them and correct them for abandoning him?

  180. And the answer here is no.

  181. Jesus is going to go and be restored with his disciples.

  182. He's going to go and be restored with Peter.

  183. Because of Jesus' death and his resurrection,

  184. he is coming to be restored to sinners.

  185. Becoming to be restored to people like you and me.

  186. I don't want to distract us from our focus though,

  187. which is the response of these women.

  188. And it's actually surprising in certain ways.

  189. Verse eight, we are told,

  190. they went out and fled from the tomb

  191. for trembling and astonishment had seized them.

  192. They were literally shaking

  193. after encountering this angel.

  194. Which in some ways makes sense.

  195. This is an overwhelming experience.

  196. And in some ways is very surprising.

  197. They've just received great news.

  198. Jesus has risen from the dead.

  199. And he's risen from the dead

  200. just like he told you over and over again.

  201. And so it's likely that they're remembering finally

  202. the things that Jesus was trying to communicate to them

  203. and they weren't able to hear.

  204. And so why is it that they are physically shaking

  205. and filled with astonishment?

  206. And why is it that we're told

  207. they're not able to say anything

  208. because they're afraid?

  209. Well, in his book,

  210. What Does It Mean to Fear the Lord?

  211. by a man named Michael Reeves,

  212. he says,

  213. trembling is actually the common denominator

  214. that we see throughout the story of the Bible

  215. for people who experience the fear of God.

  216. Whether it is a fear of God

  217. from someone who's a sinner,

  218. who's afraid of his punishment,

  219. or someone who's experiencing the fear

  220. that the Proverbs talks about,

  221. the fear of all at God's majesty and love

  222. and his power,

  223. trembling is what those people experience.

  224. And so what Mark is telling us here

  225. is that these women are overwhelmed

  226. by the demonstration of God's power and love.

  227. They are overwhelmed as they understand

  228. what has actually happened.

  229. They're trembling as they see what Jesus has done.

  230. Reeves goes on to clarify,

  231. and this is an important thing for us to understand,

  232. that there are two types of trembling.

  233. The first kind of trembling,

  234. he says,

  235. is the kind of trembling

  236. that happens when a soldier is under heavy fire.

  237. It's the trembling of terror.

  238. And that's the kind of trembling or fear

  239. we would expect from someone

  240. who is not a Christian if they encounter God.

  241. That they would have terror

  242. knowing that they're facing God's judgment

  243. for their sins.

  244. He then goes on to tell us

  245. so there's another type of trembling.

  246. Trembling as a soldier under fire

  247. is not the only way.

  248. The other kind of trembling

  249. is the trembling of overwhelmed adoration

  250. as a bridegroom first seeing his bride.

  251. That when we think about the fear of the Lord,

  252. the fear of the Lord for Christians

  253. is not a fear of God

  254. as if God is going to hurt us somehow.

  255. It is that kind of trembling

  256. as the bridegroom seeing his bride.

  257. It is the trembling that happens

  258. when we see something great

  259. and powerful and overwhelming.

  260. Jeremiah 33 verse 9,

    Jeremiah 33:9

  261. talking about God's people,

  262. says this,

  263. they shall fear and tremble

  264. because of all the good

  265. and all the prosperity

  266. I provide for it.

  267. And so they're not afraid of God

  268. in Jeremiah 33

  269. as if he's going to do something bad to them.

  270. No, they have this fear of God

  271. because he is so good.

  272. In other words,

  273. they are overwhelmed

  274. by God and his goodness.

  275. They're trembling

  276. because God has been so kind to them.

  277. They're trembling

  278. because they realize

  279. how powerful God is.

  280. it's the sort of trembling

  281. that you might experience

  282. as you look out

  283. on the Grand Canyon.

  284. It's the kind of trembling

  285. you might feel

  286. as you see the northern lights.

  287. It's the kind of trembling

  288. that many people felt

  289. back in 2017

  290. when we had a total eclipse.

  291. You guys might remember that.

  292. Nature is only a signpost

  293. to point us to God.

  294. If people tremble

  295. at a solar eclipse,

  296. imagine how much more

  297. they will tremble

  298. before the king of the universe.

  299. And so there's a trembling

  300. that comes from realizing

  301. God's greatness

  302. and our smallness.

  303. There's a trembling

  304. that comes from realizing

  305. our wickedness

  306. and God's forgiveness.

  307. There's a trembling

  308. we experience

  309. when we are overwhelmed

  310. by the reality of our sin

  311. and we're also overwhelmed

  312. by God's mercy

  313. and His goodness

  314. and His love.

  315. And so that helps us understand

  316. what it means

  317. for someone to fear the Lord

  318. because we're told

  319. in 1 John 4, verse 18,

    1 John 4:18

  320. that perfect love

  321. casts out fear.

  322. In other words,

  323. we need an understanding

  324. of the word fear

  325. that goes beyond

  326. just being scared.

  327. When a Christian

  328. experiences the fear of God,

  329. it is not being scared of God.

  330. It is being overwhelmed

  331. by God's holiness,

  332. by His power,

  333. by His authority,

  334. by His love,

  335. by His goodness,

  336. by His mercy.

  337. And it's that fear of God

  338. that moves us

  339. to obedience

  340. and love

  341. and awe.

  342. It's true

  343. of the entire Bible

  344. and it's true

  345. of the Gospel

  346. of Mark.

  347. Reeves also

  348. gives us a list

  349. of people

  350. in the Old Testament

  351. and the New Testament

  352. who trembled

  353. in God's presence.

  354. He tells us,

  355. Abraham, Joshua,

  356. David, Ezekiel,

  357. Daniel, Paul,

  358. and John

  359. all fell

  360. on their faces

  361. in God's presence.

  362. Now,

  363. if I've lost you

  364. a little bit,

  365. this would be the time

  366. for you to come back

  367. in with me.

  368. The point is this.

  369. These women

  370. have trembling

  371. and astonishment

  372. because they have

  373. finally realized

  374. how great God is.

  375. They have trembling

  376. and astonishment

  377. because they are

  378. overwhelmed

  379. by what it means

  380. that Jesus has died

  381. and risen from the dead.

  382. They have trembling

  383. and astonishment

  384. because finally

  385. they realize

  386. who Jesus is.

  387. and so they have

  388. appropriate

  389. a true,

  390. a right fear.

  391. We might say

  392. in a sense

  393. they are falling

  394. on their faces

  395. like Abraham,

  396. Joshua,

  397. David,

  398. Ezekiel,

  399. Daniel,

  400. Paul,

  401. and John.

  402. They have

  403. a true

  404. fear of the Lord,

  405. not a fear

  406. of punishment,

  407. not afraid

  408. of God,

  409. but an understanding

  410. of God's greatness.

  411. And that understanding

  412. hits them

  413. so hard

  414. it knocks the wind

  415. out of them.

  416. Now I only

  417. can remember

  418. a couple times

  419. as a kid

  420. that something

  421. knocked the wind

  422. out of me

  423. such that I actually

  424. wasn't able to speak

  425. and I've tried hard.

  426. I can't actually

  427. remember what it was

  428. that happened to me.

  429. I think maybe one time

  430. I ran into a chair

  431. and I wasn't able

  432. to say anything

  433. for a certain amount

  434. of time.

  435. All I could do

  436. to my parents

  437. was mouth words.

  438. And as a parent

  439. you realize,

  440. okay,

  441. this kid's not going

  442. to be able

  443. to talk for a while

  444. because the force

  445. is so great.

  446. We know

  447. from the other gospels

  448. that these women

  449. went forward

  450. and did exactly

  451. what this angel

  452. told them to do.

  453. They went

  454. and shared

  455. the news

  456. with Jesus'

  457. disciples.

  458. disciples.

  459. And so what do

  460. we make

  461. of these last

  462. couple phrases?

  463. They said nothing

  464. to anyone

  465. for they

  466. were afraid.

  467. God's greatness.

  468. God's goodness

  469. and his love.

  470. Jesus' power

  471. and authority

  472. overwhelmed them

  473. so much

  474. it knocked

  475. the wind

  476. out of them.

  477. God's goodness.

  478. God's goodness

  479. that's what happens

  480. when we see

  481. God

  482. for who he truly is.

  483. That's why

  484. we don't want

  485. the gospel of Mark

  486. to be merely

  487. an intellectual

  488. exercise.

  489. That's what happens

  490. when we understand

  491. how great God is

  492. and how small

  493. we are.

  494. That's what happens

  495. when we see

  496. how terrible

  497. our sin is

  498. and how great

  499. a forgiveness

  500. we have

  501. in Christ.

  502. It does not

  503. lead us

  504. to make

  505. simply

  506. an interesting

  507. note

  508. in the margin

  509. of our Bibles

  510. although that's

  511. certainly not wrong.

  512. It does not

  513. cause us

  514. to think

  515. theoretical

  516. thoughts

  517. at the end

  518. of the day

  519. and at the

  520. very end

  521. of Mark's

  522. gospel

  523. if we

  524. understand

  525. who Jesus

  526. is

  527. it will

  528. take the

  529. wind

  530. out of us.

  531. If we

  532. understand

  533. what Jesus

  534. has done

  535. we will

  536. have no

  537. choice

  538. but to

  539. tremble.

  540. when

  541. we

  542. see

  543. God

  544. we

  545. will

  546. be

  547. like

  548. Joseph

  549. of

  550. Arimathea

  551. who gives

  552. up his

  553. kingdom

  554. for God's

  555. kingdom.

  556. We will

  557. be

  558. like

  559. these

  560. women

  561. overwhelmed

  562. with

  563. who

  564. God

  565. is.

  566. And so

  567. you can

  568. see why

  569. I think

  570. this is

  571. an

  572. appropriate

  573. ending

  574. to Mark's

  575. gospel.

  576. Mark

  577. actually

  578. tells us

  579. multiple

  580. times

  581. in other

  582. parts

  583. of the

  584. gospel

  585. about

  586. people

  587. having

  588. this

  589. fear

  590. of

  591. God.

  592. Mark

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  593. chapter

  594. 9

  595. we had

  596. the

  597. transfiguration

  598. remember

  599. Peter,

  600. James,

  601. and John

  602. got to

  603. be part

  604. of this

  605. elite

  606. group

  607. that

  608. went

  609. with

  610. Jesus

  611. and

  612. they

  613. saw

  614. Elijah

  615. and

  616. Moses

  617. at

  618. the

  619. top

  620. of

  621. a

  622. mountain

  623. and

  624. what

  625. are

  626. we

  627. told?

  628. Peter

  629. did

  630. not

  631. know

  632. what

  633. to

  634. say

  635. for

  636. they

  637. were

  638. terrified.

  639. Now

  640. they

  641. Moses

  642. was

  643. going

  644. to

  645. hurt

  646. them

  647. right?

  648. No

  649. they

  650. were

  651. terrified

  652. overwhelmed

  653. by the

  654. power

  655. and

  656. grace

  657. that

  658. was

  659. present.

  660. We're

  661. told the

  662. same

  663. thing

  664. Mark

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  665. chapter

  666. 4

  667. remember

  668. Jesus

  669. calms

  670. the

  671. storm

  672. and

  673. they

  674. were

  675. filled

  676. with

  677. great

  678. fear

  679. and

  680. said

  681. to

  682. one

  683. another

  684. who

  685. then

  686. is

  687. this

  688. that

  689. even

  690. the

  691. wind

  692. and

  693. the

  694. sea

  695. obey

  696. him?

  697. And

  698. so

  699. verse

  700. 8

  701. here

  702. the

  703. last

  704. verse

  705. of

  706. Mark's

  707. gospel

  708. completes

  709. the

  710. pattern.

  711. This

  712. is

  713. what

  714. happens

  715. when

  716. people

  717. see

  718. God

  719. for

  720. who

  721. he

  722. truly

  723. is.

  724. When

  725. we

  726. grasp

  727. our

  728. sin

  729. and

  730. God's

  731. grace

  732. this

  733. is

  734. what

  735. happens.

  736. When

  737. we

  738. grasp

  739. God's

  740. power

  741. and

  742. our

  743. weakness

  744. this

  745. is

  746. how

  747. we

  748. respond.

  749. When

  750. we

  751. understand

  752. how

  753. loving

  754. God

  755. is

  756. that

  757. there's

  758. no one

  759. who

  760. loves

  761. you

  762. more

  763. than

  764. Jesus

  765. loves

  766. you

  767. we

  768. will

  769. have

  770. trembling

  771. and

  772. astonishment.

  773. One

  774. of the

  775. reasons

  776. scholars

  777. are

  778. dissatisfied

  779. by this

  780. ending

  781. even as

  782. they know

  783. that the

  784. addition

  785. is not

  786. original

  787. is that

  788. there's

  789. been all

  790. these

  791. references

  792. throughout

  793. the

  794. gospel

  795. to

  796. what's

  797. going

  798. to

  799. happen

  800. next.

  801. We're

  802. told

  803. Jesus

  804. has

  805. gone

  806. on

  807. to

  808. Galilee.

  809. And

  810. that

  811. they're

  812. going

  813. to

  814. meet

  815. him

  816. there.

  817. They're

  818. told

  819. we're

  820. told

  821. these

  822. women

  823. are

  824. supposed

  825. to

  826. go

  827. and

  828. spread

  829. the

  830. news.

  831. And

  832. the

  833. other

  834. gospels

  835. tell

  836. us

  837. about

  838. those

  839. things.

  840. And

  841. so

  842. some

  843. people

  844. say

  845. well

  846. Mark

  847. must

  848. have

  849. had

  850. an

  851. ending

  852. that

  853. got

  854. lost.

  855. He

  856. must

  857. have

  858. gone

  859. on

  860. to

  861. tell

  862. us

  863. those

  864. things

  865. like

  866. the

  867. other

  868. gospels.

  869. When

  870. in fact

  871. I think

  872. Mark

  873. is saying

  874. this.

  875. Yes

  876. there are

  877. many

  878. things

  879. that

  880. happened

  881. after

  882. Jesus'

  883. resurrection.

  884. Yes

  885. the women

  886. went

  887. and they

  888. shared

  889. the good

  890. news

  891. that was

  892. given

  893. to them

  894. by the

  895. angel.

  896. Yes

  897. they went

  898. on and

  899. met

  900. Jesus

  901. in

  902. Galilee.

  903. Yes

  904. we're

  905. told

  906. at the

  907. beginning

  908. of Acts

  909. and at the

  910. end of

  911. Luke

  912. the

  913. continuing

  914. ministry

  915. of Jesus

  916. and

  917. all

  918. of that

  919. is

  920. downstream

  921. of

  922. knowing

  923. who

  924. God

  925. is.

  926. None

  927. of that

  928. matters

  929. if we

  930. have not

  931. stood

  932. in the

  933. presence

  934. of God

  935. and none

  936. of that

  937. will last

  938. unless

  939. we see

  940. Jesus

  941. for who

  942. he truly

  943. is.

  944. and so

  945. as we

  946. move on

  947. to

  948. Judges

  949. and we

  950. look back

  951. at Mark

  952. what I

  953. don't want

  954. you to

  955. do

  956. is to

  957. think of

  958. it as

  959. just

  960. another

  961. book

  962. that we

  963. studied.

  964. Instead

  965. I want

  966. you to

  967. remember

  968. that Jesus

  969. was the

  970. one who

  971. came

  972. and worked

  973. miracles

  974. because he

  975. is the

  976. king of

  977. all heaven

  978. and earth.

  979. I want

  980. you to

  981. remember

  982. that Jesus

  983. is the

  984. one who

  985. cast out

  986. demons

  987. because there's

  988. no evil

  989. power that

  990. does not

  991. submit to

  992. him.

  993. I want

  994. you to

  995. remember

  996. that he's

  997. the one

  998. who was

  999. in darkness

  1000. for three

  1001. hours as

  1002. he hung

  1003. on the

  1004. cross

  1005. because he

  1006. received

  1007. God's

  1008. judgment

  1009. and wrath.

  1010. I want

  1011. you to

  1012. remember

  1013. that as

  1014. Jesus

  1015. prayed in

  1016. the garden

  1017. of Gethsemane

  1018. he was

  1019. abandoned

  1020. by his

  1021. disciples

  1022. because in

  1023. the end

  1024. he was

  1025. all alone.

  1026. I want

  1027. you to

  1028. remember

  1029. that Peter

  1030. denied

  1031. Christ

  1032. and when

  1033. Jesus rose

  1034. from the

  1035. dead he

  1036. said tell

  1037. the disciples

  1038. and Peter.

  1039. I want

  1040. you to

  1041. remember

  1042. that when

  1043. the enemy

  1044. comes knocking

  1045. to accuse

  1046. you as

  1047. the liar

  1048. that he

  1049. is

  1050. that

  1051. Jesus

  1052. suffered

  1053. under

  1054. Pontius

  1055. Pilate.

  1056. He

  1057. received

  1058. the

  1059. guilty

  1060. verdict

  1061. so that

  1062. we could

  1063. be declared

  1064. innocent.

  1065. The

  1066. gospel of

  1067. Mark

  1068. and

  1069. Jesus'

  1070. life

  1071. and

  1072. death

  1073. and

  1074. resurrection

  1075. are

  1076. meant

  1077. to

  1078. change

  1079. us

  1080. forever.

  1081. We

  1082. are

  1083. meant

  1084. to

  1085. have

  1086. trembling

  1087. and

  1088. astonishment

  1089. and in

  1090. a true

  1091. and right

  1092. sense

  1093. to be

  1094. afraid.

  1095. Of course

  1096. as we

  1097. come to

  1098. the end

  1099. of Mark's

  1100. gospel

  1101. it is not

  1102. the end

  1103. of the

  1104. story.

  1105. There are

  1106. many many

  1107. more things

  1108. to come

  1109. and all

  1110. of them

  1111. are

  1112. downstream

  1113. of this.

  1114. What

  1115. comes

  1116. first

  1117. is who

  1118. is Jesus

  1119. and how

  1120. do you

  1121. respond to

  1122. him?

  1123. And who

  1124. is Jesus?

  1125. He has

  1126. more power

  1127. than anyone

  1128. else.

  1129. He has

  1130. more glory

  1131. than anyone

  1132. else.

  1133. He has

  1134. more love

  1135. than anyone

  1136. else.

  1137. And how

  1138. do we

  1139. respond to

  1140. him?

  1141. Verse

  1142. 7 of

  1143. your

  1144. worship

  1145. guide

  1146. says

  1147. this,

  1148. To

  1149. encounter

  1150. the

  1151. living

  1152. God

  1153. truly

  1154. means

  1155. that we

  1156. cannot

  1157. contain

  1158. ourselves.

  1159. He

  1160. is not

  1161. a truth

  1162. to be

  1163. known

  1164. unaffectedly

  1165. or a

  1166. good

  1167. to be

  1168. received

  1169. listlessly.

  1170. Seen

  1171. clearly,

  1172. the dazzling

  1173. beauty

  1174. and splendor

  1175. of God

  1176. must cause

  1177. our hearts

  1178. to quake.

  1179. not

  1180. quake

  1181. in fear

  1182. but

  1183. overwhelmed

  1184. by God's

  1185. love,

  1186. power,

  1187. authority,

  1188. and holiness

  1189. and glory.

  1190. That causes

  1191. us to

  1192. follow him

  1193. and to

  1194. love him

  1195. and obey

  1196. him.

  1197. So that's

  1198. why we're

  1199. going to

  1200. sing now.

  1201. Behold

  1202. our God

  1203. seated on

  1204. his throne.

  1205. Come

  1206. let us

  1207. adore

  1208. him.

  1209. Behold

  1210. our

  1211. king,

  1212. nothing

  1213. can

  1214. compare.

  1215. Come

  1216. let us

  1217. adore

  1218. him.

  1219. Let's

  1220. pray.

  1221. Let's

  1222. pray.

  1223. Let's

  1224. pray.

  1225. Let's

  1226. pray.

  1227. Let's

  1228. pray.

  1229. Let's

  1230. pray.
