  1. I'm a pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here.

  5. And we're glad that you're here,

  6. not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together,

  9. we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  10. they don't need God's grace,

  11. and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  12. which is why we come back week after week

  13. to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  14. We're continuing to take a break from our series in the book of Judges.

  15. We're doing a five-week series on our Grit and Grace Generosity Initiative.

  16. And as you hear that word generosity,

  17. of course you know we're talking about raising money as a church,

  18. but in our sermons we are not going to talk a lot about giving

  19. because our church is not about money.

  20. It's about a mission.

  21. We just happen to need money to pursue that mission.

  22. And so we're going to be talking about the mission of this church

  23. and our vision together.

  24. A couple weeks ago we talked about,

  25. from Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  26. about the church being the city set upon a hill.

  27. The church is the light of the world.

  28. And then last week we talked from 1 Corinthians chapter 3

    1 Corinthians 3 chapter mention

  29. about the fact that we're a gospel hub.

  30. We're a church that's constantly sending and receiving.

  31. And this week we're going to be jumping forward in 1 Corinthians

  32. all the way from chapter 3 to chapter 12.

  33. And we're going to be talking about the piece of our vision

  34. that is our thick community,

  35. that is we're deeply connected to one another.

  36. Now I'm going to read a long section.

  37. I'm going to read verses 12 through 27 just for context,

  38. but our focus this morning is going to be mainly on verses 25 through 27.

  39. So we're going to read a large section so we know what we're talking about.

  40. And then we're going to zone in on three verses specifically.

  41. And our question this morning is simple.

  42. What is unique about the Christian community?

  43. What is unique about the Christian community?

  44. Why is the Christian community the thickest of all communities?

  45. Now it's with that, I invite you to turn with me to God's Word.

  46. You can turn in your Bible, you can turn on your phone,

  47. you can turn in your worship guide.

  48. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  49. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold,

  50. even the finest gold.

  51. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  52. And so that's why we read now 1 Corinthians chapter 12,

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  53. starting with verse 12.

  54. For just as the body is one and has many members,

  55. and all the members of the body, though many, are one body,

  56. so it is with Christ.

  57. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,

  58. Jews or Greeks, slaves or free,

  59. and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

  60. For the body does not consist of one member, but of many.

  61. If the foot should say,

  62. Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,

  63. that would not make it any less a part of the body.

  64. And if the ear should say,

  65. Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,

  66. that would not make it any less a part of the body.

  67. If the whole body were an eye,

  68. where would be the sense of hearing?

  69. If the whole body were an ear,

  70. where would be the sense of smell?

  71. But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose.

  72. If all were a single member, where would the body be?

  73. As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

  74. The eye cannot say to the hand, I have no need of you,

  75. nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.

  76. Verse 22.

  77. On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable.

  78. And on those parts of the body that we think less honorable, we bestow the greater honor.

  79. And our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty,

  80. which our more presentable parts do not require.

  81. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it,

  82. that there may be no division in the body,

  83. but that the members may have the same care for one another.

  84. Verse 26.

  85. If one member suffers, all suffer together.

  86. If one member is honored, all rejoice together.

  87. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  88. Our Father in heaven, we praise you and we thank you for your gift of the church to us.

  89. We thank you for this community, not simply a community that gathers on Sunday morning,

  90. but a community that scatters throughout the week together.

  91. We ask that you would continue to build this community, this outpost at Cheyenne Mountain.

  92. We ask that you would do it by your word.

  93. And so we ask that you help us this morning as we look at Paul's letter to the Corinthians first,

  94. and then also for us that you would use it to teach us and grow us.

  95. Most of all, we ask that you would use it to change us,

  96. that we would look more like Jesus because of our time together this morning.

  97. And we ask these things in his mighty name.

  98. Amen.

  99. I don't think I say this very often, but every once in a while,

  100. I will say that 2018 was most likely the most challenging year for me of my adult life.

  101. Some of you who were here back then know many pieces of that.

  102. I won't go into all of it, but I will share with you one story from the April of 2018.

  103. It was early in the month, and I woke up.

  104. Actually, I wasn't able to go to sleep at night because I had this chest pain that wouldn't go away.

  105. And so it was severe enough that I decided I needed to go to the emergency room.

  106. So I woke up, one of my housemates that I was living with at the time,

  107. and he took me to Penrose downtown, and I wasn't doing great.

  108. I came into the hospital.

  109. I got dizzy.

  110. I ended up collapsing on the floor.

  111. Now, there was another thing that was happening in April of 2018,

  112. which is that I was trying to get ordained as a minister.

  113. And this ER incident actually happened several weeks

  114. before I was supposed to go and do my final series of oral tests before our regional church.

  115. And so during that time, I was working and studying a lot.

  116. I was working on these exams to become ordained as a pastor,

  117. and there was one particular coffee shop where I would spend an enormous amount of time.

  118. I spent so much time that basically everyone at this coffee shop, they knew who I was,

  119. they knew my name, and I was there so much that five-plus years later,

  120. sometimes I'll still run into someone from that time who remembers who I am,

  121. they know my name.

  122. The question is this.

  123. When I was in the emergency room, did anyone from the coffee shop visit me?

  124. No.

  125. Now, it's not their fault.

  126. I'm not throwing them under the bus.

  127. I didn't tell anyone at the coffee shop that I was in the emergency room.

  128. Not only did I not tell them, I wasn't able to tell them.

  129. I had never exchanged phone numbers with them.

  130. So I knew these people.

  131. They recognized me.

  132. We had some sort of community together.

  133. And yet when things went sideways for me, who was it that showed up?

  134. Well, it was actually someone from this church.

  135. Mark and Marie's fair brother came in the middle of the night to Penrose downtown,

  136. probably like 1 or 2 a.m.,

  137. and they stayed with me while they did all these tests,

  138. and then I think Mark and Marie ended up driving me back home to my house,

  139. and Mark then took me the next morning to get the antibiotics they'd given me.

  140. By the way, I was not having a heart attack at age, what had that been, 29?

  141. They told me I had bronchitis.

  142. Chest pain is one of the things that you can have with that.

  143. I was able to recover, and by God's grace, I got ordained.

  144. But I tell you all that story to highlight this,

  145. the difference between a thick community and a thin community.

  146. Thick and thin community is a term that's used by sociologists to describe

  147. different groups of people and the level of care and investment and commitment

  148. that exists in those types of groups.

  149. If you are in a thin community, you will have people who know your name.

  150. You may have drive-by interactions with those people.

  151. You may have a shared activity.

  152. For me, I knew these people because we had the shared activity

  153. of being in the same coffee shop together.

  154. I had the shared activity of ordering coffee.

  155. They had the shared activity of providing me with coffee.

  156. But will people in a thin community call you when you stop showing up?

  157. Eventually, I kind of broke up with that coffee shop,

  158. and I moved on to another one.

  159. Did they call me to find out what had happened?

  160. No.

  161. They sent me an email saying,

  162. we haven't seen you in a while.

  163. Here's $3 off.

  164. If you are in a thin community,

  165. will they sit with you and cry when you lose a loved one?

  166. No.

  167. Will they give you money for groceries when you're out of work?

  168. Maybe.

  169. Probably not.

  170. Those are not things that thin communities do.

  171. Now, you might find some exceptions here and there,

  172. and if you do, they are exceptions that prove the rule.

  173. No, that list that I just read to you,

  174. those are things that thick communities do.

  175. Thick communities have more than drive-by interactions.

  176. People in thick communities know more than just your name.

  177. People in thick communities show up when you end up in the emergency room.

  178. People in thick communities sit with you and cry with you when you lose a loved one.

  179. People in thick communities bring you gift cards to King Soopers when you lose your job.

  180. In fact, that's what we find throughout the entire testimony of Scripture.

  181. Thick community members are intimately connected to one another.

  182. When I was in the ER, the thin community was not there.

  183. The thick community was.

  184. That's because the thick community does things like this.

  185. Romans 12, verse 15.

    Romans 12:15

  186. Rejoice with those who rejoice.

  187. Weep with those who weep.

  188. Galatians chapter 5.

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  189. Through love, serve one another.

  190. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word.

  191. You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

  192. 1 Peter 4.

  193. Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.

  194. John chapter 13.

    John 13 chapter mention

  195. A new commandment I give to you that you love one another.

  196. Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.

  197. By this, all people will know that you are my disciples if you have love for one another.

  198. Now, we could have looked at any one of those passages this morning.

  199. We happen to be looking at 1 Corinthians chapter 12, which captures these concepts.

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  200. It shows how intimately connected the members of the church are supposed to be.

  201. Now, we're told in verse 26 what it's supposed to look like.

  202. If one member suffers, all suffer together.

  203. If one member is honored, all rejoice together.

  204. That's a thick community kind of thing to do.

  205. That we are celebrating each other's successes and we're grieving each other's losses.

  206. That we are deeply and intimately connected.

  207. And the reason for that, we're given in verse 12 at the very beginning.

  208. Paul sets up this comparison between the church body and the human body.

  209. The human body is one entity with many members.

  210. And the church body, one entity with many members.

  211. So we need different parts to make the body work.

  212. This is what Paul is teaching this church.

  213. And yet, it's different parts that make the body work.

  214. All pointing towards the same mission.

  215. All working towards the same end and goal together.

  216. All connected and participating in successes and failures.

  217. He emphasizes this, not just in verse 12, but also in verse 20.

  218. As it is, there are many parts, yet one body.

  219. And there's all sorts of implications that we could talk about as we think through what this passage means for us as a church.

  220. We could talk about the fact that there's great unity, right?

  221. The body only has one purpose and one goal.

  222. The toes and the eyes are not in competition with each other.

  223. And we could talk about the fact that there's different tasks.

  224. Each person has a special place to fulfill.

  225. Part of what we saw in 1 Corinthians 3 last week is that there are some who plant and some who water, right?

  226. Everyone has a job within God's people.

  227. This passage ultimately shows our deep need for one another.

  228. And it also shows our deep care for each other.

  229. It shows our deep need for one another and our deep care for each other.

  230. And it's the deep care that I want to focus us on this morning.

  231. This deep care, by the way, is necessarily how a body works.

  232. Paul actually doesn't say, hey, this is what you should do.

  233. He says, this is unavoidable.

  234. This is what a body does.

  235. Notice his language here, verse 26.

  236. He doesn't say if one member suffers, all should suffer together.

  237. And he doesn't say if all rejoice together, everyone should.

  238. If one rejoices, everyone should rejoice together.

  239. No, he states it as the way things just automatically work.

  240. Why?

  241. Because that's how a body works.

  242. You don't have to think, if you stub your toe,

  243. about whether the rest of your body is going to be upset, right?

  244. That's not a decision that your body makes.

  245. No, it's a body.

  246. One piece is suffering.

  247. The entire body is going to suffer, right?

  248. Paul is saying, this is how intimately connected you are to each other.

  249. This is not my vision for the church.

  250. This is what the church is.

  251. If it's a body, then necessarily it will function in this way.

  252. If it's a body, already we will see this working out

  253. in the functions of the community.

  254. You'll note on page seven, this quote from Charles Hodge.

  255. He says, this is the law of our physical nature.

  256. Notice that word, the law.

  257. This is how it works.

  258. You can't get around it.

  259. The body is really one.

  260. It has a common life and consciousness.

  261. The pain or pleasure of one part is common to the whole.

  262. So Paul is not saying that this should happen.

  263. He is saying, this is the only way.

  264. If you are a body, then this is reality.

  265. If you are a church connected to Christ the head, this is reality.

  266. One member suffers, all suffer together.

  267. One member rejoices, all rejoice together.

  268. He tells us this, verse 25,

  269. that there may be no division in the body,

  270. but that the members may have the same care for one another.

  271. What does he mean here by the same care?

  272. What kind of care do the members have for each other?

  273. Well, that phrase, same care,

  274. is getting at what Jesus says in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  275. The members give the same care to each other

  276. that they would give to themselves.

  277. And so this is what Jesus told us.

  278. Remember, when we were in the gospel of Mark,

  279. what's the summary of the law?

  280. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength

  281. and love your neighbor as yourself.

  282. That's how a body works.

  283. The eye cares for the toe as itself.

  284. Toe cares for the eye.

  285. The heart cares for the liver.

  286. The lungs care for the blood.

  287. There is no other way for a body to work.

  288. Brothers and sisters,

  289. there is no other way for the church to work.

  290. If one member suffers,

  291. all suffer together.

  292. If one member is honored,

  293. all rejoice together.

  294. Now you are the body of Christ

  295. and individually members of it.

  296. Verse 27 there is telling us why it works this way.

  297. It works this way because that is how bodies work.

  298. And so that's our vision for this church.

  299. Our vision for Cheyenne Mountain

  300. is that we would be a place of thick community.

  301. Our vision is that when someone new

  302. walks into the doors here,

  303. that they would be warmly welcomed

  304. and brought into our fellowship.

  305. Our vision is that as the heartbeat of our community,

  306. our worship service would overflow into the week.

  307. That we would not simply or merely

  308. be people who happen to occupy the same room

  309. on Sunday morning,

  310. but that as we're sent out from this room

  311. at the benediction,

  312. we would be connected to each other

  313. Monday through Saturday.

  314. Our vision is that as one member suffers,

  315. all suffer together.

  316. Our vision is that as one member rejoices,

  317. all rejoice together.

  318. Our vision is that this would be a place

  319. where people know each other intimately.

  320. That we pray with those who are suffering.

  321. That we rejoice with those who are celebrating.

  322. That we work with those who are struggling.

  323. That we encourage those who are sad.

  324. And we help those who are grieving.

  325. That we would be one community

  326. following Jesus together.

  327. If one member suffers,

  328. all suffer together.

  329. If one member rejoices,

  330. all rejoice together.

  331. Our vision is not

  332. that we would be the church

  333. of the beautiful people

  334. who have it all together

  335. and all look the same.

  336. Our vision is not

  337. that we would have cliques

  338. that are hard to break into

  339. and insiders and outsiders.

  340. No, our vision is that

  341. we would have

  342. all sorts of people

  343. in all sorts of life stages,

  344. from all sorts of backgrounds,

  345. and all sorts of ages

  346. connecting deeply

  347. with one another.

  348. Our vision is that

  349. we would be

  350. the body.

  351. Now, this is already happening

  352. in our church.

  353. When I say this is our vision,

  354. what I don't mean is,

  355. wow, this is such a cold place.

  356. I hope we can be warm, right?

  357. No, I mean,

  358. we want to grow.

  359. We want this to become

  360. more and more true

  361. of this community.

  362. This is already happening

  363. in our church.

  364. It's happening

  365. in women's Bible studies

  366. and men's Bible studies.

  367. It's happening

  368. in small groups.

  369. It's happening

  370. at the ladies' come and go

  371. on Fridays.

  372. It's happening

  373. in our outreach Bible study

  374. on Tuesday mornings.

  375. We are seeing God at work

  376. in this body

  377. and we're not satisfied.

  378. We want to see

  379. even more.

  380. We want to grow

  381. even more.

  382. We want Romans 15,

    Romans 15:7

  383. verse 7,

  384. to be true of us.

  385. Therefore,

  386. welcome one another

  387. as Christ has welcomed you

  388. for the glory of God.

  389. A few weeks ago

  390. when we launched

  391. Grid and Grace

  392. on September 24th,

  393. a man named Joe

  394. was here in our worship services

  395. and he was here

  396. because Joe is helping us

  397. with the generosity initiative.

  398. And so I met with Joe afterwards

  399. and I asked him

  400. for some feedback.

  401. I said,

  402. hey, I don't want you

  403. to flatter me.

  404. We want to grow and improve.

  405. Tell me what your experience

  406. was like on Sunday morning

  407. at Cheyenne Mountain.

  408. And he said,

  409. well, you guys have

  410. that greeting time

  411. and it is very long.

  412. He said,

  413. I've been to churches before

  414. and maybe they have

  415. a three minute greeting time.

  416. Maybe they'd have

  417. less than that.

  418. Your greeting time

  419. goes for five minutes.

  420. And then he said,

  421. and as I was there,

  422. I talked to this person

  423. and this person

  424. and this person

  425. and suddenly I realized,

  426. oh, there's a reason

  427. their greeting time

  428. goes so long.

  429. These people actually

  430. like each other.

  431. I was like,

  432. yeah, Joe,

  433. that's part of our church.

  434. These people

  435. actually like each other.

  436. They actually want

  437. to connect with each other

  438. and hear how each other's doing.

  439. That is part of what it means

  440. to be Cheyenne Mountain.

  441. I've told this story

  442. only a few times,

  443. but when I first came

  444. to interview

  445. in the April of 2017

  446. at this church,

  447. I met Paul Bishop,

  448. not Paul Bishop II.

  449. We have a Paul Bishop

  450. in our congregation right now,

  451. but we had a previous

  452. Paul Bishop

  453. in our congregation

  454. who's now moved on,

  455. the first Paul Bishop.

  456. And I met Paul

  457. this weekend,

  458. that weekend,

  459. and I told him,

  460. you know,

  461. tell me about Cheyenne Mountain.

  462. He said,

  463. well, one of the things

  464. that's always been true

  465. about Cheyenne Mountain

  466. is its welcome.

  467. People have always

  468. commented on

  469. how welcome they feel

  470. as part of our church.

  471. And I continue to hear that

  472. from visitors.

  473. People come,

  474. they say,

  475. man, I'm surprised

  476. by how open

  477. and welcoming

  478. this congregation is.

  479. I share all that

  480. to say,

  481. when we talk about

  482. our vision,

  483. we're not saying

  484. these are things

  485. that are not true,

  486. but we hope they're true.

  487. No, we're saying

  488. this is part of our culture

  489. at Cheyenne Mountain.

  490. Let it be even more.

  491. This is part of our culture

  492. at Cheyenne Mountain.

  493. Let it continue to grow.

  494. Now, at the beginning,

  495. I asked this question.

  496. I said,

  497. what's unique

  498. about the Christian community?

  499. Why is it the thickest community?

  500. You know,

  501. when we talk about

  502. thick and thin communities,

  503. the church is not

  504. the only thick community.

  505. Okay?

  506. There are other places

  507. you can go

  508. and you can find

  509. that kind of care.

  510. Now, I will say

  511. thick communities

  512. are disappearing

  513. in our culture.

  514. The church

  515. is one of the last ones left.

  516. Why?

  517. Well, one of the reasons

  518. Britt already highlighted

  519. this morning,

  520. it's on page three

  521. of your worship guide.

  522. Britt read the first part,

  523. community among persons

  524. is forged

  525. only when there is

  526. something more important

  527. than one's own interests

  528. to which all share

  529. a higher allegiance.

  530. But here's the second part.

  531. When I am the final authority

  532. for determining

  533. right and wrong

  534. and when nothing

  535. is more important

  536. than my right

  537. to live as I see fit,

  538. tight, supportive community

  539. is eroded,

  540. perhaps even impossible.

  541. In other words,

  542. thick community

  543. and individualism

  544. don't go together.

  545. Thick community

  546. and secularism

  547. do not go together.

  548. Thick community

  549. requires,

  550. it demands

  551. that you be committed

  552. to something

  553. greater than yourself.

  554. Thick community

  555. requires and demands

  556. that you adhere

  557. to a way of life

  558. that you share

  559. with other people.

  560. what's happening

  561. in our culture

  562. right now.

  563. We're rejecting

  564. that entirely, right?

  565. I am the ultimate

  566. standard of authority.

  567. If you are the ultimate

  568. standard of authority,

  569. community will always

  570. have its limits.

  571. Because as soon

  572. as something

  573. is not serving you

  574. in exactly the right way,

  575. where are you going to go?

  576. Somewhere else.

  577. No, there's a higher

  578. commitment

  579. that community

  580. requires.

  581. And so that's part

  582. of why the church

  583. is one of the last

  584. thick communities

  585. remaining.

  586. There's another reason.

  587. Let's get to this

  588. on the back

  589. of your worship guide.

  590. A quote by a man

  591. named David Brooks

  592. talks about the difference

  593. between thin institutions

  594. and thick institutions.

  595. Thin institutions

  596. tend to see themselves

  597. horizontally.

  598. People are members

  599. for mutual benefit.

  600. Thick organizations

  601. often see themselves

  602. on a vertical axis.

  603. People are members

  604. so they can collectively

  605. serve the same

  606. higher good.

  607. In the former,

  608. there's an ever-present

  609. utilitarian calculus.

  610. Is this working for me?

  611. Am I getting more out

  612. that I'm putting in?

  613. That creates a distance

  614. between people

  615. and the organization.

  616. But in the latter,

  617. there's an intimacy

  618. and an identity

  619. born out of common love.

  620. Why is the church

  621. one of the last thick

  622. communities left

  623. in our culture?

  624. Because there's an intimacy

  625. and an identity

  626. born out of common love.

  627. There is something

  628. that is more important

  629. than our self-expression.

  630. There's something

  631. that's more important

  632. than our self-identity.

  633. There's something

  634. that's more important

  635. than our self-interest.

  636. And so that's one piece

  637. of the story.

  638. That's one reason

  639. that the church

  640. is one of the last

  641. thick communities left.

  642. Now, I haven't answered

  643. the whole question.

  644. The next question is,

  645. and why is the church

  646. the thickest

  647. of all the ones

  648. that are left?

  649. Before I answer that,

  650. I want to say this.

  651. Right now in the church,

  652. there's this phenomenon

  653. of people coming

  654. and they're coming

  655. to the church

  656. looking for community.

  657. community,

  658. but they're consumers

  659. of community,

  660. not creators

  661. of community.

  662. In other words,

  663. they come to the church

  664. and they say,

  665. you're a church

  666. and churches are

  667. dispensers of community.

  668. So where's my community?

  669. Where is the group

  670. of people

  671. that I'm going

  672. to get along with

  673. the best

  674. already established

  675. for me?

  676. Where are the events

  677. that meet my exact needs

  678. at the exact right time?

  679. Oh, and by the way,

  680. if this doesn't happen

  681. on my timetable,

  682. well then I'm just

  683. going to go find

  684. another community vendor.

  685. I'll find another church

  686. that's maybe meeting

  687. my community need.

  688. And so what happens

  689. is folks just jump

  690. from church to church

  691. searching for something

  692. that doesn't really exist.

  693. And so when I say

  694. that we're a church

  695. of thick community,

  696. that's what we long for,

  697. that's our vision,

  698. I am not saying

  699. we're going to serve it

  700. to you on a silver platter.

  701. Because we are not

  702. community consumers,

  703. we're community builders.

  704. You want thick community?

  705. Join us in building it.

  706. You want to be connected

  707. with other people

  708. in the church?

  709. Show up

  710. when those people show up.

  711. Meet with those people

  712. when they meet.

  713. Be a part of building

  714. this community

  715. together.

  716. By the way,

  717. that's why Cheyenne Mountain

  718. is still here

  719. 27 years after its founding.

  720. It's because the people

  721. who have come here

  722. have not been consumers

  723. of community,

  724. they've been builders

  725. of community.

  726. They have not asked

  727. how they can be served,

  728. but they have asked

  729. how they serve.

  730. In other words,

  731. if you don't show up

  732. to anything

  733. and you leave

  734. during the last song,

  735. as thick as this community is,

  736. don't expect to find it

  737. for yourself here.

  738. Does that make sense?

  739. We need to be builders

  740. of community,

  741. not consumers

  742. of community.

  743. Okay,

  744. I have explained

  745. the disappearance

  746. of thick communities

  747. in one sense,

  748. the sense that

  749. our society

  750. is more and more

  751. individualistic.

  752. That doesn't answer

  753. the question, though,

  754. of why Christianity

  755. is the thickest community.

  756. You could find

  757. thick community

  758. in a mosque.

  759. Maybe you could find

  760. it in a Mormon temple.

  761. Why do you come here

  762. to find it

  763. in a Christian church?

  764. Well,

  765. there's probably

  766. many reasons.

  767. One of them

  768. is this.

  769. This is once again

  770. on page seven

  771. of your worship guide.

  772. Pastor Tim Keller

  773. is speaking about

  774. truth claims here,

  775. but we could apply this

  776. to communities as well.

  777. All claims are exclusive.

  778. The gospel is an exclusive truth,

  779. but it's the most inclusive,

  780. exclusive truth

  781. in the world.

  782. You might say it

  783. a different way.

  784. All communities

  785. are exclusive.

  786. The Christian community

  787. is the most inclusive,

  788. exclusive community

  789. in the world.

  790. Why is it the most inclusive

  791. of all the exclusive communities?

  792. It's the most inclusive

  793. because there's only

  794. one requirement

  795. to be a member.

  796. And the requirement

  797. is that you recognize

  798. that you have no hope

  799. outside of Jesus Christ.

  800. And in recognizing that,

  801. you realize

  802. that you must follow

  803. after Him

  804. in His faith

  805. and obedience.

  806. which means

  807. it is more inclusive

  808. than every other community.

  809. It's not limited

  810. by age.

  811. It's not limited

  812. by ability.

  813. It's not limited

  814. by generation.

  815. It's not limited

  816. by culture.

  817. It's not limited

  818. by how much

  819. you can do

  820. or perform.

  821. It's only limited

  822. by one thing,

  823. and so it's the most open

  824. of all the communities.

  825. There are many places

  826. that will claim

  827. to be a family for you.

  828. The army

  829. will claim

  830. to be your family.

  831. And the army

  832. will be a phenomenal family

  833. for you

  834. and to you

  835. until the day

  836. you get a DUI.

  837. And at that point,

  838. the army,

  839. I have bad news for you,

  840. is no longer

  841. your family.

  842. Okay?

  843. There might be

  844. a running club

  845. in which you have

  846. deep connection

  847. and community,

  848. and you've actually found

  849. a level of thickness there.

  850. But what happens

  851. if you lose your legs?

  852. There might be

  853. another religion

  854. that welcomes you in

  855. for a time,

  856. and if you're not able

  857. to perform

  858. at the right level,

  859. because all religions

  860. outside of Christianity

  861. are works-based,

  862. you will find

  863. that it's not

  864. the place for you.

  865. Christianity

  866. is the thickest

  867. of all communities.

  868. The church

  869. is the thickest

  870. that you can find,

  871. because there is

  872. only one requirement

  873. for admission.

  874. Of course,

  875. there's only one requirement

  876. for admission

  877. because of our Lord

  878. and Savior,

  879. Jesus Christ.

  880. when we talk

  881. about being

  882. the body of Christ

  883. in 1 Corinthians 12,

  884. we cannot forget

  885. that every body

  886. has a head.

  887. Paul tells us

  888. in another letter

  889. in Colossians,

  890. the church is the body,

  891. Christ is the head.

  892. So why is the church

  893. the thickest community?

  894. Verse 27 tells us,

  895. now you are the body

  896. of Christ

  897. and individually

  898. members of it.

  899. the church is the

  900. greatest body,

  901. it's the greatest

  902. community,

  903. because we have

  904. the greatest

  905. head.

  906. Now,

  907. as we think about

  908. being a thick

  909. community,

  910. we have to talk about

  911. what it means

  912. to be a community

  913. that is getting

  914. larger and larger.

  915. As I've told you

  916. all before,

  917. there are many things

  918. that we disagree

  919. about at this church.

  920. no one disagrees

  921. with the fact

  922. that we're growing.

  923. No one disagrees

  924. with the fact

  925. that this church

  926. is getting larger

  927. and larger

  928. in terms of the people

  929. that are connected

  930. to it and are coming

  931. on Sunday morning.

  932. And the challenge

  933. of greater growth

  934. is that it becomes

  935. harder and harder

  936. as you have more

  937. and more people

  938. to build and maintain

  939. a thick community.

  940. Now,

  941. notice what I didn't say.

  942. I didn't say

  943. it becomes impossible.

  944. I said it becomes harder.

  945. It is more challenging

  946. the more people

  947. you have in a community

  948. to stay tight

  949. and connected

  950. to one another.

  951. And one of the ways

  952. that you do that

  953. is by having

  954. even more smaller groups

  955. for folks to plug into.

  956. The large group

  957. can be a challenging place.

  958. You know,

  959. sometimes you show up

  960. to a restaurant

  961. and you have like

  962. a party of 15

  963. and everyone insists

  964. that you have to sit

  965. at one table.

  966. Everyone knows

  967. that 15 people

  968. can't have one conversation,

  969. right?

  970. But everyone wants

  971. that feeling of,

  972. oh, we're all

  973. at the same table.

  974. Same thing happens

  975. in the church.

  976. As we grow,

  977. there comes this reality

  978. where we need

  979. more and more

  980. smaller places

  981. for folks to connect.

  982. Especially

  983. intentional small groups

  984. for people to connect.

  985. And so that's why

  986. the elders have set

  987. the goal of by 2026,

  988. we want to have

  989. five to seven

  990. new small groups.

  991. Not because we're

  992. obsessed with small groups,

  993. that's just a strategy,

  994. but because we're

  995. passionate about

  996. thick community.

  997. We're passionate

  998. about places

  999. where people

  1000. can come,

  1001. plug in,

  1002. connect,

  1003. and walk side

  1004. by side

  1005. with one another.

  1006. The challenge

  1007. is this.

  1008. To get there,

  1009. we need

  1010. a second pastor.

  1011. And to get

  1012. a second pastor,

  1013. we need

  1014. to eliminate

  1015. our building debt

  1016. of $800,000.

  1017. And to eliminate

  1018. that debt,

  1019. that's why we have

  1020. the Grid and Grace

  1021. initiative.

  1022. We are trying

  1023. to raise that money

  1024. to pay off

  1025. our mortgage

  1026. so we can

  1027. free up

  1028. $8,000 a month

  1029. in our budget.

  1030. We want to release

  1031. that $8,000

  1032. and we want to

  1033. release it

  1034. into thick community.

  1035. We want to release

1036. it into a second pastor

  1037. who will help us

  1038. do this well.

  1039. A pastor will be

  1040. raising up

  1041. and developing

  1042. leaders who can

  1043. run those groups.

  1044. A pastor will be

  1045. overseeing them.

  1046. A pastor will help

  1047. us to be faithful

  1048. in maintaining

  1049. our vision

  1050. moving forward.

  1051. And so that's

  1052. why we're inviting

  1053. and challenging you

  1054. as the congregation

1055. to join us in that.

  1056. That you would get

  1057. the same vision

  1058. that we have

  1059. of a community

  1060. that's intimately

  1061. connected to one another

  1062. where as we grow

  1063. there would continue

  1064. to be places

  1065. where people can know

  1066. and be known.

  1067. That's our vision.

  1068. That's why we're

  1069. talking about this.

  1070. That's why we're

  1071. trying to raise money.

  1072. Not because we're

  1073. about money

  1074. but because we're

  1075. about a mission.

  1076. And that mission

  1077. involves moving forward

  1078. the next level

  1079. of growth

  1080. as a church.

  1081. Now I mentioned

  1082. earlier verse 27

  1083. helps us understand

  1084. why the church

  1085. is the thickest

  1086. community.

  1087. It's because of

  1088. our head

  1089. our Lord Jesus.

  1090. Colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1091. says this

1092. and he is the head

  1093. of the church

  1094. of the body

  1095. the church.

  1096. He is the beginning

  1097. the firstborn

  1098. from the dead

  1099. that in everything

  1100. he might be preeminent.

  1101. What does a body

  1102. need

  1103. to make everything

  1104. else work?

  1105. It has to have

  1106. a head.

  1107. If you lose

  1108. your arm

  1109. you can still

  1110. make it in life.

  1111. If you lose

  1112. a toe

  1113. things will be

  1114. challenging

  1115. you're still here.

  1116. If you lose

  1117. your head

  1118. game over.

  1119. right?

  1120. And it's our head

  1121. that leads us

  1122. and guides us.

  1123. You may have

  1124. noticed

  1125. in the back

  1126. of your worship

  1127. guide

  1128. in our vision

  1129. section

  1130. we have our

  1131. symbol

  1132. for thick

  1133. community

  1134. and the symbol

  1135. is a towel

  1136. and a basin

  1137. and the towel

  1138. and the basin

  1139. are meant

  1140. to remind us

  1141. the story

  1142. of Jesus

  1143. from John

    John 13 chapter mention

  1144. chapter 13.

  1145. Remember Jesus

  1146. is with his

  1147. disciples

  1148. it's the last

  1149. week of his

  1150. life.

  1151. They come

  1152. in

  1153. and Jesus

  1154. acts not

  1155. as the host

  1156. but as the servant

  1157. and he does

  1158. this by washing

  1159. their feet

  1160. and he says

  1161. this in John

  1162. 13

  1163. If I then

  1164. your Lord

  1165. and teacher

  1166. have washed

  1167. your feet

  1168. you also

  1169. ought to wash

  1170. one another's

  1171. feet

  1172. for I have

  1173. given you

  1174. an example

  1175. that you also

  1176. should do

  1177. just as I

  1178. have done

  1179. to you.

  1180. Why is

  1181. Christianity

  1182. the thickest

  1183. community?

  1184. It's the

  1185. thickest

  1186. community

  1187. because we

  1188. are a body

  1189. that's connected

  1190. to Christ

  1191. our head

  1192. and it's

  1193. the thickest

  1194. community

  1195. because Christ

  1196. our head

  1197. has set

  1198. for us

  1199. an example.

  1200. He has

  1201. set for us

  1202. the example

  1203. of washing

  1204. one another's

  1205. feet.

  1206. He has

  1207. given us

  1208. the grace

  1209. to not

  1210. be focused

  1211. on our

  1212. own rights

  1213. and privileges.

  1214. He's

  1215. given us

  1216. the power

  1217. to embrace

  1218. him and

  1219. others

  1220. above

  1221. ourselves.

  1222. That's the

  1223. logic by the

  1224. way in our

  1225. final song.

  1226. A song that

  1227. can really

  1228. only be sung

  1229. by Christians.

  1230. Tells us

  1231. three times

  1232. in the first

  1233. verse

  1234. teach us

  1235. your ways.

  1236. As we learn

  1237. from one

  1238. another

  1239. learn to

  1240. love

  1241. each other.

  1242. And that

  1243. does two

  1244. things.

  1245. It recognizes

  1246. our need.

  1247. We need

  1248. to be

  1249. taught.

  1250. We can't

  1251. do this

  1252. by ourselves.

  1253. And it

  1254. also shows

  1255. us the

  1256. one from

  1257. whom we

  1258. learn it,

  1259. our Lord

  1260. and Savior

  1261. Jesus Christ.

  1262. He is

  1263. the one

  1264. who has

  1265. the ways

  1266. of love.

  1267. We ask

  1268. him to

  1269. teach us.

  1270. We do

  1271. that

  1272. following

  1273. him

  1274. together

  1275. as one

  1276. community.

  1277. Let's

  1278. pray.

  1279. Let's

  1280. pray.
