  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  4. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here.

  7. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  8. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  9. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  10. They don't need God's grace.

  11. And no one so bad that they can't have it.

  12. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  13. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Judges.

  14. And you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  15. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  16. It's about the need for a faithful and true king.

  17. A king who can do what no man can do, which is to change the hearts of humans.

  18. It's about the spirit, the power of spirit-filled leadership.

  19. And it's about God's mercy on hard-hearted people.

  20. People like you and me.

  21. Last week, Drew Arrington finished up for us the story of Deborah and Barak and Sisera.

  22. And so now we move on to Judges chapter 6, where we see the story of Gideon.

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  23. The story of Gideon spans several chapters in the book of Judges.

  24. And so we're going to be in this for a number of weeks.

  25. And just at the beginning this week, we're going to try to bite off verses 1 through 24.

  26. Now, there's a lot going on even in these verses.

  27. And we could spend several weeks just in these first 24 verses up in front of us.

  28. And what I want us to focus on, to keep our eyes on, is a paradox, a tension,

  29. that appears in this text and in this story.

  30. And the tension is between...

  31. There's an angel.

  32. He shows up to Gideon.

  33. The tension is between the angel's description of Gideon and how Gideon actually behaves.

  34. So we're going to see the angel in verse 12.

  35. He's going to come to Gideon and he's going to describe him as this great, mighty man of valor.

  36. And then in verse 14, he's going to tell him,

  37. Hey, you have actually this great and enormous strength.

  38. Gideon, on the other hand, does not appear at all like a mighty man of valor.

  39. He appears feeble and doubting and hiding from his enemies.

  40. And so our question this week is simple.

  41. Why does God call this hesitant and hiding man a mighty man of valor?

  42. A related question would be, what gives us the power to go out on God's mission?

  43. What is it that gives us the power to go out on God's mission?

  44. And with that, I'm going to invite you to turn with me to Judges chapter 6.

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  45. You can turn in your worship guide.

  46. You can turn on your phone.

  47. You can turn in your Bible.

  48. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  49. And Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  50. Every word of God proves true.

  51. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  52. And so that's why we read now Judges chapter 6, starting at verse 1.

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  53. The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  54. And the Lord gave them into the hand of Midian seven years.

  55. And the hand of Midian overpowered Israel.

  56. And because of Midian, the people of Israel made for themselves the dens that are in the mountains and the caves and the strongholds.

  57. For whenever the Israelites planted crops, the Midianites and the Amalekites and the people of the east would come up against them.

  58. They would encamp against them and devour the produce of the land as far as Gaza

  59. and leave no sustenance in Israel and no sheep or ox or donkey.

  60. For they would come up with their livestock and their tents.

  61. They would come like locusts in number.

  62. Both they and their camels could not be counted.

  63. So that they laid waste the land as they came in.

  64. And Israel was brought very low because of Midian.

  65. And the people of Israel cried out for help to the Lord.

  66. Verse 7.

  67. When the people of Israel cried out to the Lord on account of the Midianites,

  68. the Lord sent a prophet to the people of Israel.

  69. And he said to them,

  70. Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel,

  71. I led you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of slavery.

  72. And I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all who oppressed you

  73. and drove them out before you and gave you their land.

  74. And I said to you, I am the Lord your God.

  75. You shall not fear the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.

  76. But you have not obeyed my voice.

  77. Verse 11.

  78. Now the angel of the Lord came and sat under the terebinth at Aphra,

  79. which belonged to Joash the Abizrite,

  80. while his son Gideon was beating out wheat in the winepress to hide it from the Midianites.

  81. And the angel of the Lord appeared to him and said to him,

  82. The Lord is with you, O mighty man of valor.

  83. Verse 13.

  84. And Gideon said to him,

  85. Please, sir, if the Lord is with us, why then has all this happened to us?

  86. And where are all his wondrous deeds that our fathers recounted to us,

  87. saying, Did not the Lord bring us up from Egypt?

  88. But now the Lord has forsaken us and given us into the hand of Midian.

  89. And the Lord turned to him and said,

  90. Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian.

  91. Do not I send you.

  92. Verse 15.

  93. And he said to him,

  94. Please, Lord, how can I save Israel?

  95. Behold, my clan is the weakest in Manasseh,

  96. and I am the least in my father's house.

  97. And the Lord said to him,

  98. But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.

  99. And he said to him,

  100. If now I have found favor in your eyes,

  101. then show me a sign that it is you who speak to me.

  102. Please do not depart from here until I come to you

  103. and bring out my present and set it before you.

  104. And he said,

  105. I will stay until you return.

  106. Verse 19.

  107. So Gideon went into his house and prepared a young goat

  108. and unleavened cakes from an ephah of flour.

  109. The meat he put in a basket,

  110. and the broth he put in a pot,

  111. and brought them to him under the terebinth,

  112. and presented them.

  113. And the angel of God said to him,

  114. Take the meat and the unleavened cakes,

  115. and put them on this rock,

  116. and pour the broth over them.

  117. And he did so.

  118. Then the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of the staff

  119. that was in his hand,

  120. and touched the meat and the unleavened cakes.

  121. And fire sprang up from the rock,

  122. and consumed the meat and the unleavened cakes.

  123. And the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.

  124. Then Gideon perceived that he was the angel of the Lord.

  125. And Gideon said,

  126. Alas, O Lord God,

  127. for now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.

  128. But the Lord said to him,

  129. Peace be to you.

  130. Do not fear.

  131. You shall not die.

  132. Then Gideon built an altar there to the Lord

  133. and called it,

  134. The Lord is Peace.

  135. To this day,

  136. it still stands at Afra,

  137. which belongs to the Abizrites.

  138. I invite you to pray with me

  139. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  140. Our Father in heaven,

  141. we praise you,

  142. and we thank you again

  143. that you are not a God who's far off,

  144. but you're a God who comes near to us,

  145. that you're a God who's with us,

  146. that you speak to us clearly in your word.

  147. And we ask that you would do that again this morning,

  148. that you would show us your mercy and your grace,

  149. and you'd show us our need for that mercy,

  150. and you would help us to turn in faith and love to you.

  151. And we ask all these things

  152. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  153. Amen.

  154. Amen.

  155. As we begin in chapter six,

  156. we see in verse one a phrase

  157. that we've seen over and over before.

  158. In fact, this has become something of a formula

  159. to explain what we've talked about before

  160. of the judge's cycle,

  161. or the judge's spiral,

  162. as some have called it.

  163. That the judges are faithful to God for a time,

  164. they fall into idolatry and disobedience,

  165. and then they again cry out to him.

  166. And so we see in verse one,

  167. the people of Israel did what was evil

  168. in the sight of the Lord.

  169. It's a formulaic statement

  170. that we've seen with Ophniel and Ehud.

  171. We saw it with Deborah and Barak.

  172. And so in a sense,

  173. we're expecting the same thing to happen again

  174. in this passage.

  175. Once again,

  176. we're going to see God's people turn away from him,

  177. a judge be raised up,

  178. and then them come back.

  179. But this time,

  180. things are worse than ever before.

  181. In fact, that should not surprise us.

  182. Remember when the cycle is introduced,

  183. Judges chapter two, verse 19,

  184. it tells us each time there's a cycle,

  185. things are going to get worse and worse.

  186. Things are so bad here,

  187. verse two,

  188. they are hiding out in caves.

  189. They have never had to do this before.

  190. This was not part of the previous stories

  191. in this book.

  192. And we find out very quickly

  193. why it is that they're hiding out in the caves.

  194. Verses three and four,

  195. things are not just bad.

  196. Actually, things are so bad.

  197. They are not just oppressed like they were before.

  198. They are actually starved.

  199. We have not heard before of the food supply

  200. for the Israelites being cut off,

  201. but that's exactly what's happening here.

  202. Verse four,

  203. they're devouring the produce of the land

  204. and they leave no sustenance in Israel,

  205. no sheep or ox or donkey.

  206. And so that helps explain for us

  207. what's happening later in the chapter.

  208. Why do we find Gideon,

  209. verse 11,

  210. beating out wheat in a wine press?

  211. Well, he's doing everything he can,

  212. right, to hide food

  213. from those who are coming to pillage and destroy.

  214. It helps us understand

  215. why are they hiding in caves?

  216. Well, because they're trying to keep their food,

  217. the little food that they have,

  218. away from those who are pillaging them

  219. and plundering them.

  220. We haven't heard this phrase before.

  221. Verse six,

  222. Israel was brought very low.

  223. Things are worth now

  224. than they have been in chapters one through five.

  225. And so they do what they've always done.

  226. Verses six and seven,

  227. they cry out.

  228. Notice though,

  229. what they don't do,

  230. it's what they failed to do in the past.

  231. They cry out,

  232. they don't repent.

  233. They're sorry that they're in the situation

  234. where they're being plundered.

  235. They are not sorry

  236. that they've turned aside,

  237. verse 10,

  238. worshiped the gods of the Amorites.

  239. And so God comes,

  240. verses eight through 10,

  241. by this angel,

  242. speaks on his behalf

  243. to spell out for them

  244. what exactly has gone wrong.

  245. Look,

  246. I told you all to do this

  247. and you did that.

  248. I told you all

  249. not to worship foreign gods,

  250. but instead

  251. you have chosen to do that.

  252. It's worth noting here

  253. that God's condemnation

  254. in verses eight through 10

  255. is immediately

  256. followed by his deliverance

  257. in verse 11.

  258. We'll come back to that later.

  259. For now,

  260. I want us to move on

  261. to our friend Gideon

  262. who we meet in verse 11

  263. and he is hiding food.

  264. He is beating out wheat

  265. in the wine press,

  266. hoping somehow

  267. that these plunderers

  268. as they come through

  269. are not going to see him.

  270. Somehow he's going to be able

  271. to preserve food

  272. for himself

  273. and his family

  274. by changing his location.

  275. He is struggling

  276. for basic existence.

  277. In fact,

  278. all of Israel here

  279. is struggling

  280. for basic existence.

  281. And the angel comes

  282. and says

  283. probably one of the last things

  284. we would expect him to say.

  285. The angel does not first

  286. come to deliver

  287. some sort of instructions

  288. or encouragement.

  289. No, the angel just shows up,

  290. verse 12,

  291. and says this,

  292. The Lord is with you,

  293. O mighty man of valor.

  294. And so you can imagine

  295. Gideon's thoughts

  296. as he is hiding out

  297. in a wine press

  298. just trying to have

  299. enough food to eat.

  300. This angel shows up

  301. out of nowhere

  302. and just says,

  303. You know what?

  304. God's with you.

  305. And you know what?

  306. You are a real strong guy.

  307. And of course,

  308. Gideon does not buy it.

  309. Verse 12,

  310. The Lord is with you.

  311. Verse 13,

  312. what does he say?

  313. If the Lord is with us.

  314. You might tell me

  315. that God is here with us.

  316. It certainly doesn't feel like that.

  317. You might tell me

  318. that God is with us.

  319. It certainly doesn't look like that.

  320. We have heard all the stories

  321. about what you did

  322. for our forefathers,

  323. but where are you now?

  324. What good does the story

  325. of the Exodus do for us

  326. when we can barely eat?

  327. What good do your words

  328. of presence do for us

  329. when we're being ransacked

  330. by other countries?

  331. Gideon is cynical

  332. and jaded.

  333. He's cynical and jaded

  334. based on what's been happening

  335. in his country.

  336. That fact that he's having

  337. to hide out

  338. and just preserve

  339. enough food to survive.

  340. And what does the angel respond?

  341. The angel doesn't answer

  342. his complaints at all.

  343. The angel doesn't tell him,

  344. Oh no,

  345. this is how you should

  346. think through it.

  347. No,

  348. he just gives him a command.

  349. Thank you for sharing

  350. those complaints, Gideon.

  351. And here's what I have

  352. to say to you.

  353. Verse 14,

  354. go in this might of yours

  355. and save Israel

  356. from the hand of Midian.

  357. Sorry you're feeling oppressed.

  358. I'm sorry you're struggling

  359. for food.

  360. Step two,

  361. go and defeat your conquerors.

  362. Which raises our question again,

  363. why does God choose

  364. this hesitant

  365. and hiding man

  366. a mighty man

  367. of valor?

  368. Gideon does not have

  369. a great resume.

  370. Verse 11,

  371. what is he doing?

  372. He is not going out

  373. in this great strength

  374. that he supposedly has

  375. to fight Israel's enemies.

  376. No,

  377. he's hiding away.

  378. He is staying

  379. as low

  380. as he can.

  381. And it makes sense,

  382. right?

  383. But this is not

  384. some great act

  385. of bravery

  386. or courage.

  387. We have no indication

  388. that Gideon

  389. has a resume

  390. of bravery

  391. and courage.

  392. Verse 13,

  393. we find out

  394. he is a disaffected

  395. and cynical

  396. and jaded young man

  397. who has doubts

  398. and questions

  399. about whether God

  400. is really with them.

  401. Verse 15,

  402. he goes on

  403. to help this angel

  404. understand

  405. that his resume

  406. is really bad.

  407. His clan

  408. is the weakest

  409. in Manasseh.

  410. And it's not just

  411. his clan

  412. that is a problem.

  413. He is also a problem.

  414. He is the least

  415. in his father's house.

  416. And so we have

  417. a pretty strong case

  418. up front

  419. that God

  420. has picked

  421. the wrong man.

  422. God,

  423. at least in Gideon's eyes,

  424. has made

  425. a mistake.

  426. There are other clans

  427. to choose from.

  428. within his clan,

  429. there are other men

  430. to pick from.

  431. And so why

  432. does God come

  433. to Gideon

  434. of all these people

  435. and tell him

  436. in the midst

  437. of his failure,

  438. his weak resume,

  439. no indication,

  440. there's no track record

  441. here of his victory

  442. against oppressors

  443. that he is

  444. the mighty man

  445. of valor?

  446. Well,

  447. I've told you

  448. only one side

  449. of the story.

  450. the angel

  451. says,

  452. O mighty man

  453. of valor,

  454. but that's not

  455. the first thing

  456. he says.

  457. What does the angel

  458. say

  459. first?

  460. Verse 12,

  461. the Lord

  462. is

  463. with you.

  464. The Lord

  465. is with you,

  466. O mighty

  467. man

  468. of valor.

  469. Verse 13,

  470. Gideon

  471. has doubts

  472. about God's

  473. presence.

  474. What does he say?

  475. Verse 14,

  476. do I

  477. not

  478. send

  479. you?

  480. Gideon

  481. explains

  482. verse 15

  483. that his

  484. resume

  485. is really

  486. bad.

  487. He is the

  488. weakest

  489. and the

  490. least.

  491. And what

  492. does the angel

  493. say?

  494. Verse 16,

  495. the angel

  496. does not

  497. say,

  498. oh,

  499. no,

  500. no,

  501. Gideon,

  502. that's not

  503. true.

  504. Manasseh's

  505. not the

  506. weakest.

  507. You're

  508. actually

  509. such a

  510. strong

  511. man.

  512. No,

  513. he doesn't

  514. argue with

  515. Gideon.

  516. What does

  517. he say?

  518. But I

  519. will

  520. be

  521. with

  522. you.

  523. This is

  524. the same

  525. thing we

  526. saw with

  527. JL a

  528. couple weeks

  529. ago.

  530. God

  531. is not

  532. interested

  533. in picking

  534. the strongest

  535. or the

  536. most talented.

  537. God

  538. does not

  539. choose to

  540. do his

  541. work

  542. through

  543. those

  544. who

  545. are

  546. most

  547. gifted

  548. or

  549. impressive.

  550. God

  551. works

  552. through

  553. those

  554. who

  555. follow

  556. him

  557. in

  558. obedience.

  559. Victory

  560. comes

  561. to the

  562. faithful

  563. who

  564. take

  565. God

  566. at

  567. his

  568. word.

  569. By the

  570. way,

  571. he doesn't

  572. just promise

  573. his presence,

  574. he also

  575. promises

  576. great

  577. victory.

  578. The same

  579. thing he

  580. promised

  581. to Barak.

  582. Verse 16,

  583. you shall

  584. strike the

  585. Midianites

  586. as one

  587. man.

  588. Why

  589. is Gideon

  590. a mighty

  591. man

  592. of

  593. valor?

  594. Gideon

  595. is a

  596. mighty

  597. man of

  598. valor

  599. because

  600. God

  601. is with

  602. him.

  603. God

  604. does

  605. not

  606. call

  607. the

  608. qualified.

  609. God

  610. qualifies

  611. the

  612. called.

  613. God

  614. is not

  615. interested

  616. in the

  617. most

  618. talented

  619. or

  620. gifted

  621. or

  622. flashy

  623. people.

  624. God

  625. is

  626. interested

  627. in

  628. those

  629. who

  630. will

  631. obey.

  632. And

  633. God

  634. gives

  635. his

  636. presence

  637. to

  638. his

  639. people.

  640. Gideon

  641. is a

  642. mighty

  643. man of

  644. valor

  645. for one

  646. reason

  647. and one

  648. reason

  649. only.

  650. God's

  651. presence

  652. with

  653. him.

  654. Remember

  655. I mentioned

  656. the other

  657. question we're

  658. asking is

  659. this,

  660. what gives

  661. us the

  662. power

  663. to go

  664. out on

  665. God's

  666. mission?

  667. And the

  668. answer is

  669. the same,

  670. God

  671. is with

  672. us.

  673. Proverbs

    Proverbs 18:10

  674. 18,

  675. verse 10

  676. reminds us,

  677. the name

  678. of the

  679. Lord

  680. is a

  681. strong

  682. tower.

  683. The

  684. righteous

  685. man

  686. runs

  687. into

  688. it

  689. and

  690. is

  691. safe.

  692. Psalm

    Psalms 125:1

  693. 125,

  694. verse

  695. 1.

  696. Those

  697. who

  698. love

  699. the

  700. Lord

  701. are

  702. like

  703. Mount

  704. Zion,

  705. which

  706. cannot

  707. be

  708. moved,

  709. but

  710. abides

  711. forever.

  712. Psalm

    Psalms 125:2

  713. 125,

  714. verse 2,

  715. as the

  716. mountains

  717. surround

  718. Jerusalem,

  719. so the

  720. Lord

  721. surrounds

  722. his

  723. people

  724. from

  725. this

  726. time

  727. forth

  728. and

  729. forevermore.

  730. Christian,

  731. how

  732. can you

  733. follow

  734. after God?

  735. How can

  736. you go

  737. on the

  738. mission

  739. that he

  740. has called

  741. us to?

  742. For

  743. one reason

  744. and one

  745. reason

  746. only,

  747. God

  748. is with

  749. you.

  750. Gideon's

  751. question

  752. in

  753. verse

  754. 15

  755. is our

  756. question

  757. as well.

  758. He says

  759. to him,

  760. please,

  761. Lord,

  762. how can

  763. I save

  764. Israel?

  765. Behold,

  766. my clan

  767. is the

  768. weakest

  769. in Manasseh

  770. and I

  771. am the

  772. least

  773. in my

  774. father's

  775. house.

  776. Don't

  777. we ask

  778. the same

  779. questions?

  780. how

  781. can I

  782. share

  783. my hope

  784. in Christ

  785. with my

  786. neighbor?

  787. I am

  788. awkward

  789. and I

  790. lack

  791. skill,

  792. but I

  793. will be

  794. with you.

  795. How can

  796. I stand

  797. for truth

  798. when I

  799. know that

  800. others

  801. will slander

  802. me?

  803. Behold,

  804. I am

  805. someone who

  806. only likes

  807. peace,

  808. but I

  809. am

  810. with you.

  811. How can

  812. I love

  813. my enemies

  814. and pray

  815. for those

  816. who persecute

  817. me?

  818. When I

  819. look in

  820. my heart,

  821. all I

  822. see is

  823. anger,

  824. but I

  825. am

  826. with you.

  827. How can

  828. I make

  829. the call

  830. that I

  831. know that

  832. I need

  833. to make

  834. and I'm

  835. desperately

  836. avoiding?

  837. I'm not

  838. even sure

  839. what I'm

  840. going to

  841. say.

  842. but I

  843. am

  844. with you.

  845. How can

  846. I remain

  847. faithful to

  848. my marriage

  849. vows when

  850. it is a

  851. relationship

  852. that's filled

  853. with coldness

  854. and distance?

  855. But I

  856. will be

  857. with you.

  858. How can

  859. I move

  860. towards those

  861. who have

  862. hurt me

  863. with forgiveness?

  864. Behold,

  865. I am

  866. filled with

  867. bitterness.

  868. but I

  869. will be

  870. with you.

  871. How can

  872. I confess

  873. my sins

  874. and stop

  875. living a

  876. double life?

  877. What will

  878. happen when

  879. people find

  880. out?

  881. What about

  882. the consequences?

  883. But I

  884. will be

  885. with you.

  886. Some of

  887. you are

  888. wondering,

  889. you want to

  890. switch to

  891. this mic?

  892. I'm

  893. some of

  894. you are

  895. wondering,

  896. how do

  897. I continue

  898. the journey

  899. that I'm

  900. on with

  901. parenting?

  902. It's been

  903. a long

  904. road.

  905. There's

  906. failures and

  907. mistakes in

  908. the past.

  909. There's things

  910. that I would

  911. change.

  912. I'm not

  913. sure I want

  914. to keep

  915. going.

  916. I'm not

  917. sure I have

  918. the perseverance

  919. or the wisdom

  920. that it takes,

  921. and I wonder

  922. if I should

  923. just give up

  924. if it's

  925. too late.

  926. And God's

  927. word to you

  928. is the same,

  929. but I

  930. am with

  931. you.

  932. Gideon

  933. is right

  934. in a

  935. sense.

  936. Gideon is

  937. right that

  938. obedience is

  939. impossible if

  940. we're left to

  941. ourselves.

  942. Obedience is

  943. impossible unless

  944. God is with

  945. us.

  946. We are

  947. not

  948. moralists.

  949. We don't

  950. believe that

  951. we can pull

  952. ourselves up

  953. by our

  954. bootstraps.

  955. We don't

  956. believe we

  957. can will

  958. ourselves to

  959. obey.

  960. Our hope

  961. is that

  962. God's

  963. spirit is

  964. at work

  965. within us

  966. stirring up

  967. our hearts

  968. and our

  969. minds to

  970. obey.

  971. Without

  972. God,

  973. we can't.

  974. With

  975. God,

  976. we can.

  977. God is

  978. with us

  979. by his

  980. Holy Spirit.

  981. There's

  982. comforting words

  983. on the back

  984. of our

  985. worship guide

  986. which remind

  987. us of this.

  988. Christ promises

  989. a spirit that

  990. no enemies

  991. will be able

  992. to withstand.

  993. God's

  994. children in

  995. the time of

  996. opposition,

  997. when they

  998. understand

  999. themselves and

  1000. what they

  1001. stand for,

  1002. are given

  1003. by God a

  1004. spirit against

  1005. which no

  1006. enemies can

  1007. stand.

  1008. The spirit

  1009. of liberty

  1010. gives boldness,

  1011. strength,

  1012. and courage

  1013. against

  1014. opposition.

  1015. God's

  1016. spirit,

  1017. God's

  1018. presence with

  1019. us is

  1020. what gives

  1021. us everything

  1022. we need

  1023. to follow

  1024. after him

  1025. in obedience.

  1026. In fact,

  1027. we can have

  1028. even greater

  1029. confidence than

  1030. Gideon had.

  1031. We have

  1032. greater confidence

  1033. than Gideon

  1034. had because we

  1035. have greater

  1036. access to the

  1037. Holy Spirit

  1038. than Gideon

  1039. had.

  1040. We don't

  1041. live in the

  1042. time of the

  1043. Old Testament.

  1044. Verse 9 on

  1045. your worship

  1046. guide helps us

  1047. understand the

  1048. difference between

  1049. God's presence in

  1050. the Old Testament

  1051. and the New

  1052. Testament.

  1053. This is a

  1054. theologian named

  1055. Herman Boving

  1056. who says the

  1057. Holy Spirit,

  1058. and this is he's

  1059. talking about the

  1060. Old Testament,

  1061. had come down to

  1062. a few independent

  1063. persons and only

  1064. temporarily for a

  1065. specific purpose.

  1066. Remember, one of

  1067. our themes for the

  1068. book of Judges is

  1069. the power of

  1070. spirit-filled

  1071. leadership.

  1072. What do we see?

  1073. We see the Holy

  1074. Spirit showing up

  1075. here and there on

  1076. specific people.

  1077. And what does he

  1078. tell us?

  1079. Now, that is in

  1080. the age of the

  1081. New Testament,

  1082. it descended upon

  1083. the whole church

  1084. and upon all its

  1085. members, and it

  1086. remains dwelling and

  1087. working there

  1088. permanently.

  1089. Christian, God

  1090. promises you his

  1091. presence by his

  1092. Holy Spirit.

  1093. If you are in

  1094. Christ, God is

  1095. with you.

1096. God is with you in

1097. a way that he was

  1098. not with every

  1099. Israelite in the

  1100. Old Testament.

  1101. God has poured out

1102. his spirit in a way

1103. that is new in the

  1104. new covenant.

  1105. God has poured it

  1106. out on all

  1107. believers.

  1108. It is not

  1109. something had by

  1110. some, but had by

  1111. all.

  1112. You have God's

  1113. presence.

  1114. God is with you

  1115. turning a heart of

  1116. stone into a heart

  1117. of flesh.

  1118. God is with you

  1119. giving you the

  1120. courage that you

  1121. need to stand

  1122. against opposition.

  1123. As we follow

  1124. after God, we know

  1125. that we have his

  1126. presence.

  1127. obedience.

  1128. As we follow him

  1129. in obedience.

  1130. Now, it's important

1131. to say as we follow

  1132. him in obedience

  1133. because sometimes

  1134. preachers say things

  1135. like this and people

  1136. hear, oh, God is

1137. with me in whatever I

  1138. do.

1139. God is not with you

1140. as you try to pick

  1141. winning numbers for

  1142. the Powerball.

  1143. God is not promising

  1144. success in every

  1145. business venture that

  1146. you try out.

  1147. He does promise his

  1148. ultimate power and his

  1149. ultimate success as we

  1150. follow after him in

  1151. obedience.

  1152. God promises us

1153. success in the way that

  1154. the psalmist talks about

1155. in Psalm 27, that he

1156. knows he will see the

1157. goodness of the Lord in

1158. the land of the living.

  1159. God promises his

  1160. presence in the way

  1161. Jesus speaks about it

  1162. in Matthew 28, verse

    Matthew 28:20

  1163. 20.

1164. He gives the mission to

  1165. the church, right?

  1166. He says, you're going

1167. out to make disciples of

  1168. all nations.

1169. Behold, I am with you

  1170. always, even to the

  1171. end of the age.

  1172. Christian, God is with

  1173. you.

1174. In fact, this passage is

  1175. dripping.

  1176. It is saturated with

  1177. God's grace.

1178. Remember, I told you in

  1179. verses 8 through 10, God

1180. comes with this word of

  1181. condemnation and we see

  1182. zero repentance from the

  1183. people.

  1184. And what does he

  1185. immediately do?

  1186. He moves into

  1187. deliverance.

1188. God does not wait for

  1189. his people to repent

  1190. before he raises up

  1191. Gideon.

  1192. That's the same thing

  1193. we're told in Romans

    Romans 5:8

  1194. chapter 5, verse 8.

1195. It was while we were

  1196. still sinners that

  1197. Christ died for us.

  1198. It is deliverance

  1199. followed by obedience.

  1200. It is not obedience

  1201. followed by

  1202. deliverance.

  1203. Verse 17, Gideon is

  1204. looking for a sign.

  1205. Now, it would be

  1206. tempting at this point

  1207. to say, oh, Gideon

  1208. lacks faith.

1209. He needs some sort of

  1210. confirmation.

1211. But we have to remember,

  1212. Gideon is trying to

  1213. act out the old

  1214. Russian proverb,

  1215. trust, but verify.

  1216. It's not that he doesn't

  1217. trust God's word.

1218. It's that he needs to

1219. make sure it is actually

  1220. God who is speaking.

1221. And so what he's saying

1222. is here is, I want to

1223. make sure I'm not having

  1224. a hallucination.

  1225. Okay?

  1226. Please confirm for me

1227. that this is a word from

  1228. God.

  1229. And God comes and

  1230. confirms that for him.

  1231. Gideon did not have

  1232. clarity.

  1233. We do.

1234. We do not need a sign

  1235. to remind us or

  1236. confirm God's presence.

  1237. We have already received

  1238. the greatest sign.

1239. The greatest sign is this,

1240. that God sent his one

  1241. and only son,

  1242. that whoever would

  1243. believe in him would

  1244. have eternal life.

  1245. The greatest sign is

1246. that we look to Christ

1247. who became a man and

  1248. walked life on this

  1249. earth.

  1250. Colossians 1.15

  1251. tells us this,

  1252. Jesus is the visible

  1253. image of the invisible

  1254. God.

  1255. God.

  1256. We no longer look

  1257. for a sign.

  1258. We have the greatest

  1259. sign possible.

  1260. And so now,

  1261. after Christ's

  1262. resurrection and his

  1263. ascension, his presence

1264. is even greater than it

  1265. was in the Old

  1266. Testament.

  1267. That's the promise that

  1268. Jesus makes in John

    John 14 chapter mention

  1269. chapter 14.

  1270. In John chapter 16,

    John 16 chapter mention

1271. I'm going to send my

1272. spirit to be with you.

  1273. In the Old Testament,

  1274. the spirit was given

  1275. to certain people

  1276. at certain times.

  1277. In the New Testament,

1278. God gives it to his

  1279. whole church.

  1280. Without God,

  1281. we can't.

  1282. With God,

  1283. we can.

  1284. God is with you.

1285. Why does God call Gideon

1286. a mighty man of valor?

1287. Because God is with him.

1288. What gives us the power

1289. to go out on God's mission?

1290. The answer is the same.

  1291. God is with us.

  1292. Christian,

  1293. God is with you.

  1294. You are mighty men

1295. and mighty women of valor

  1296. because of God's presence.

  1297. Let's follow after him.

  1298. Let's pray.

  1299. Our Father in heaven,

  1300. we praise you

  1301. and thank you

  1302. for your word.

  1303. And we thank you

  1304. that we live

  1305. as Jesus

  1306. is already ascended

  1307. to the right hand

  1308. of God the Father.

  1309. That he pours out

  1310. the spirit on us

  1311. as he's promised.

  1312. That we are assured

  1313. of your presence

  1314. and your power.

1315. We ask that you would

  1316. remind us of that.

1317. that it would motivate us

  1318. and enable us

  1319. to move forward

  1320. following you

  1321. together this week.

  1322. We ask these things

  1323. in the mighty name

  1324. of Jesus Christ.

  1325. Amen.
