  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the book of Judges,

  10. and you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  11. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  12. It's about the need for a faithful and true king,

  13. a king who can do what no human can do, which is to change the hearts of men.

  14. It's about the power of spirit-filled leadership,

  15. and it's about God's grace to hard-hearted and rebellious people,

  16. people like you and me.

  17. Last week, we began the story of Gideon, and we asked this big question,

  18. why is it that God calls Gideon a mighty man of valor,

  19. since everything in Gideon's resume and his actions would suggest otherwise?

  20. And we saw that Gideon was a mighty man of valor because,

  21. and only because, God was with him.

  22. That God does not call the qualified, but instead, He qualifies the called.

  23. This week, we're going to continue the story of Gideon,

  24. and we'll see that Gideon has to make a choice.

  25. Is he going to serve the true God or false gods?

  26. Of course, a choice that all of us have to make as well.

  27. And so, a simple question this morning for this passage is,

  28. why is it worth taking a risk for God?

  29. Why is it worth taking a risk for God?

  30. We'll look at two things.

  31. We'll see first the destruction of idols,

  32. and then the powerlessness of idols.

  33. The destruction of idols, and then the powerlessness of idols.

  34. It's with that that I invite you to turn with me to Judges 6,

  35. starting at verse 25.

  36. You can turn in your worship guide.

  37. You can turn on your phone.

  38. You can turn in your Bible.

  39. And no matter where you turn,

  40. remember that Proverbs 30 tells us,

  41. every word of God proves true.

  42. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  43. And so, that's why we read now,

  44. Judges 6, starting at verse 25.

  45. That night the Lord said to him,

  46. Take your father's bull and the second bull seven years old,

  47. and pull down the altar of Baal that your father has,

  48. and cut down the Asherah that is beside it,

  49. and build an altar to the Lord your God

  50. on the top of the stronghold here,

  51. with stones laid in due order.

  52. Then take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering

  53. with the wood of the Asherah that you shall cut down.

  54. So Gideon took ten men of his servants

  55. and did as the Lord had told him.

  56. But because he was too afraid of his family

  57. and the men of the town to do it by day,

  58. he did it by night.

  59. Verse 28.

  60. When the men of the town rose early in the morning,

  61. behold, the altar of Baal was broken down,

  62. and the Asherah beside it was cut down,

  63. and the second bull was offered on the altar

  64. that had been built.

  65. And they said to one another,

  66. Who has done this thing?

  67. And after they had searched and inquired,

  68. they said, Gideon, the son of Joash,

  69. has done this thing.

  70. Then the men of the town said to Joash,

  71. Bring out your son that he may die,

  72. for he has broken down the altar of Baal

  73. and cut down the Asherah beside it.

  74. But Joash said to all who stood against him,

  75. Will you contend for Baal, or will you save him?

  76. Whoever contends for him shall be put to death by morning.

  77. If he is a god, let him contend for himself,

  78. because his altar has been broken down.

  79. Verse 32.

  80. Therefore on that day Gideon was called Jeroboam,

  81. that is to say, let Baal contend against him,

  82. because he broke down his altar.

  83. Now all the Midianites and the Amalekites

  84. and the people of the east came together,

  85. and they crossed the Jordan

  86. and encamped in the valley of Jezreel.

  87. But the spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon,

  88. and he sounded the trumpet,

  89. and the Abizrites were called out to follow him.

  90. And he sent messengers throughout all Manasseh,

  91. and they too were called out to follow him.

  92. And he sent messengers to Asher, Zebulun, and Naphtali,

  93. and they went up to meet them.

  94. I invite you to pray with me

  95. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  96. Our Father in heaven,

  97. we thank you once again for your word

  98. that you've given to us,

  99. that you haven't left us to stumble around

  100. trying to put the pieces together on our own,

  101. but instead you've given us your word

  102. to show us the way to walk in this life.

  103. And most of all, our hope,

  104. that our hope is in you.

  105. And we ask that you would do that again this morning,

  106. that you would arrest our attention,

  107. that we would see clearly

  108. what you have for us in your word,

  109. and most of all,

  110. that we would see Jesus

  111. and the hope that we have in him.

  112. We are helpless to do this by ourselves,

  113. and so we ask that you would

  114. pour your spirit out on us in a special way,

  115. that we would be able to hear clearly from you

  116. and respond with faith and love and obedience.

  117. We ask these things

  118. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  119. Amen.

  120. You'll remember from last week

  121. that the Israelites have been oppressed.

  122. Once again, we see another judge's cycle

  123. by another foreign nation.

  124. And so they cry out to God asking him,

  125. hey, will you come deliver us?

  126. And God, instead of immediately

  127. sending them deliverance,

  128. instead sends them a prophet to tell them,

  129. hey, this is how you guys have gone off the map.

  130. And so in verse 10, we saw the prophet said,

  131. hey, this has happened

  132. because you have gone serving after other gods.

  133. It's not a mystery

  134. how you've gotten yourselves into this situation.

  135. No, you did exactly what I told you not to do.

  136. You feared gods other than me.

  137. This week, we get to see exactly what that means.

  138. We saw it in a big picture last week,

  139. and now we get to zoom in.

  140. It turns out within Gideon's own family,

  141. there is worship of false gods going on.

  142. Gideon's own father, Joash,

  143. this is what we see in verse 25,

  144. has two different things set up.

  145. He has an altar that he's established to Baal.

  146. Baal is this male god that they would worship.

  147. And he has an Asherah pole.

  148. Asherah was a goddess.

  149. She would have these poles

  150. that might be a tree or something else.

  151. Some folks think that these were actually carved

  152. to look like her.

  153. So he has not just one,

  154. but two idols that he set up.

  155. This is not just someone in Gideon's tribe.

  156. It is someone in Gideon's very family.

  157. Not just in his family,

  158. but his own father.

  159. And God comes then to Gideon,

  160. this mighty man of valor,

  161. and wastes no time in giving him his first task.

  162. This is verse 25.

  163. Take your father's bull,

  164. pull down the altar of Baal,

  165. cut down the Asherah that is beside it.

  166. Gideon must destroy the pagan worship

  167. that is occurring in his very own family.

  168. And so, verse 27, Gideon obeys.

  169. Gideon goes and does it.

  170. We find out he does it with fear and trembling.

  171. We're told also in verse 27,

  172. he did it at night

  173. because he was too afraid of his family

  174. and the men of the town to do it by day.

  175. Now, we might be tempted

  176. to throw Gideon under the bus at this point

  177. and say, look at him and his fear.

  178. But God didn't tell him he couldn't do it at night.

  179. In the midst of his fear and hesitation,

  180. at the end of the day,

  181. Gideon does what God commands.

  182. Gideon is obedient and faithful

  183. despite the consequences that might come.

  184. He doesn't do what we saw Barak do.

  185. Remember, Barak said, I'll obey if.

  186. I'll obey if Deborah comes with me.

  187. No, Gideon, in all his imperfection and humanity

  188. and trembling and fear,

  189. goes and does what God has told him to do.

  190. We find out that Gideon has every reason to be afraid.

  191. Townspeople wake up the next morning.

  192. They discover that the Asherah pole has been cut down,

  193. the altar has been destroyed,

  194. and what is their first response?

  195. Verse 30, let's kill him.

  196. Gideon is not simply afraid here

  197. of being ostracized socially.

  198. He's not afraid that some people might say

  199. some mean things about him around town.

  200. No, he is too afraid.

  201. He's doing this at night

  202. because his very life might be at risk.

  203. He is not afraid of disapproval.

  204. Gideon is actually afraid of death.

  205. This also reminds us that Israel

  206. has not actually repented of her idolatry.

  207. Last week, they cried out to God saying,

  208. look, we're oppressed by these other nations.

  209. Please come and help us.

  210. But as we said that then, they didn't repent.

  211. They continue to have the altar to Baal

  212. in the Asherah pole.

  213. Now, we're gonna come back to what happens next

  214. with Gideon, how his skin is able to be saved,

  215. but I don't want us to miss what has just happened here.

  216. It is not simply or merely

  217. that Gideon has to tear down the false worship.

  218. Verse 25, there's a tearing down.

  219. Verse 26, there's a replacing.

  220. God doesn't just say, hey, do away with this idol worship.

  221. 26, and build an altar to the Lord your God

  222. on top of the stronghold.

  223. And then, go and make a sacrifice.

  224. When we're told, verse 27,

  225. that Gideon did as the Lord commanded,

  226. it does not simply mean

  227. that he pulled down the altar and the pole.

  228. It means that he also stood up the new altar,

  229. made the new sacrifice.

  230. The point is this.

  231. The human heart will worship something.

  232. It is not enough to remove one thing.

  233. It must be replaced with another thing.

  234. We cannot move from worshiping one idol

  235. to worshiping nothing.

  236. No, our hearts are designed to give something,

  237. our trust, our hope, our confidence, our desires.

  238. And so, if they merely pull down this altar

  239. and there's nothing new to replace it,

  240. what is going to happen?

  241. Well, of course, that vacuum in their heart

  242. is going to be filled by something.

  243. They must replace their false worship

  244. with true worship.

  245. It's not enough to tear down.

  246. They must also build up.

  247. It's just like we discussed many times

  248. when we were in the Gospel of Mark.

  249. One love must be replaced by another love

  250. because the heart will love something.

  251. Now, remember that Gideon asked this question

  252. in verse 13 of last week.

  253. When the angel comes to him, he says,

  254. God, why has this happened to us?

  255. Why are we not experiencing the success

  256. we're told our fathers recalled to us?

  257. The angel tells them, remember verse 10,

  258. hey, not the angel, the prophet had already told them,

  259. look, you were fearing other gods.

  260. In other words, this foreign nation

  261. that has come in to take you over,

  262. they are merely a symptom of a greater disease.

  263. The disease is not the fact that the Amorites are there.

  264. The disease is your idolatry.

  265. You cannot expect to be rescued from this foreign nation

  266. until you are rescued from false worship.

  267. We cannot deal with the symptom

  268. until we eradicate the disease.

  269. And so God is telling Gideon here,

  270. look, cut it out at the root.

  271. Do you want deliverance from the foreign nations?

  272. You must first be delivered from idols.

  273. You want no more oppression.

  274. You don't want to be hiding in the caves anymore,

  275. threshing out wheat in wine presses.

  276. You have to deal with your heart.

  277. And so the point for us

  278. is just like the old proverb says,

  279. everyone wants to be a gangster

  280. until it's time to do gangster things.

  281. Everyone wants revival

  282. until it's time to do revival things.

  283. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  284. until it's time to pull down the altar to Baal.

  285. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  286. until it's time to take an unpopular stand

  287. that the world will mock you for.

  288. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  289. until the moment that we don't just talk about the sin

  290. that's out there in the world,

  291. but we have to talk about the sin

  292. that's in here in God's church.

  293. We have to repent of our own tongues

  294. and selfishness and pride and greed.

  295. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  296. until it involves us confessing our sins

  297. to a brother or a sister.

  298. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  299. until the moment we have to forgive our enemies

  300. and pray for those who persecute us.

  301. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  302. until the moment

  303. that love for God and others

  304. becomes more important

  305. than personal achievement

  306. and peak experiences.

  307. Everyone wants a mighty work of God

  308. until the moment we talk about giving generously

  309. for the kingdom of God.

  310. In other words,

  311. mighty works of God require

  312. and always require sacrifice

  313. and repentance from his people.

  314. Everyone wants revival

  315. until it's time to do revival things.

  316. We see here Gideon does exactly that.

  317. Gideon takes the risk.

  318. Gideon faces rejection by his family.

  319. Doesn't just risk rejection by his family,

  320. although Joash does come in to save him.

  321. Faces rejection by the town.

  322. Even more than that,

  323. he faces potential death.

  324. I mentioned last week in verses 8 through 10

  325. that we see the logic of redemption,

  326. that God's salvation comes before our obedience.

  327. It's deliverance followed by obedience,

  328. not obedience followed by deliverance.

  329. In other words,

  330. we don't earn things from God

  331. or prove things to him.

  332. No, he comes,

  333. as Roman 5 tells us,

  334. Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

  335. But, and,

  336. obedience does follow.

  337. There is a call to obedience

  338. before success in battle.

  339. There is a call to obedience

  340. before God clears these oppressors from his people.

  341. Again, it's the same thing we heard our Lord Jesus say

  342. when we were in Mark,

  343. in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  344. If anyone would come after me,

  345. let him deny himself

  346. and take up his cross and follow me.

  347. For whoever would save his life will lose it.

  348. But whoever loses his life for my sake

  349. and the gospel's will save it.

  350. For what does it profit a man

  351. to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?

  352. Do we really want a mighty work of God?

  353. Gideon,

  354. in the midst of his frailty and fear and humanity,

  355. is willing to pay the price.

  356. Are we willing to do the same?

  357. We see this dynamic also in verses 25 through 26.

  358. What is it that Gideon has to do?

  359. He's not just making a generic sacrifice.

  360. No, he is taking one of his father's bulls to sacrifice.

  361. In other words,

  362. what was meant for idolatry.

  363. In other words,

  364. this bull was almost certainly meant

  365. to be sacrificed on Baal's altar,

  366. is repurposed and redirected.

  367. What was meant for idolatry

  368. is used for worship of the true God.

  369. That's what turning away from idolatry looks like.

  370. It means taking what was dedicated to false gods

  371. and giving it to the true God.

  372. It means that our resources and our time

  373. are turned over

  374. from the things that capture our hearts.

  375. And they're given to God and his kingdom.

  376. We still haven't answered our question, though,

  377. which is this.

  378. Why is it worth taking a risk for God?

  379. Why is it worth Gideon stepping out here

  380. and risking his own death?

  381. Well, we turn back to the story

  382. and we see what saves Gideon's skin

  383. in this situation is his father, Joash.

  384. Joash understands a key in elementary,

  385. a theological principle.

  386. Verse 31, he says this.

  387. They're coming, by the way, for Gideon's life.

  388. They're saying, hey, let's find him and kill him.

  389. And Gideon says, will you contend for Baal

  390. or will you save him?

  391. He threatens to kill anyone who tries.

  392. And then he says this.

  393. If he is a god, let him contend for himself

  394. because his altar has been broken down.

  395. In other words, idolatry, fake gods,

  396. are just one big psyop.

  397. The false gods are actually powerless.

  398. Joash knows this.

  399. And so he's betting on it.

  400. We will have Baal protect himself

  401. so nothing will happen.

  402. Because what is Baal

  403. but someone weak, powerless, non-existent?

  404. And so Joash is reminding us

  405. of an extremely important truth,

  406. the simple fact that idols have no real power.

  407. Success will not bring you the healing

  408. that you long for.

  409. Money cannot protect you

  410. from pain and heartbreak and disease.

  411. Sex cannot give your life meaning

  412. or resolve the questions you have

  413. about your identity.

  414. If you pile things up

  415. and you're surrounded by trinkets,

  416. you will still be left feeling empty.

  417. Let Baal defend himself.

  418. Why?

  419. Because false gods cannot deliver on their promises.

  420. False gods cannot give the hope they promise.

  421. Why is it worth taking a risk for God?

  422. Because he is not a false god.

  423. The flip side is this,

  424. that Yahweh, the God of Israel,

  425. has real and true power.

  426. Gideon decides and prepares to go out to war.

  427. That's what we see in verse 33.

  428. All these enemy tribes are gathering up against him.

  429. The Midianites, the Amalekites,

  430. of the people of the east,

  431. are in an alliance.

  432. They cross the Jordan

  433. and they encamp in this valley.

  434. He has three different groups

  435. who are coming against him.

  436. Gideon here should be shaking in his boots.

  437. Verse 34,

  438. But.

  439. But what?

  440. Why is he not shaking in his boots?

  441. But the spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon.

  442. God makes good on his promise.

  443. God does exactly what he said he would do

  444. in last week's passage.

  445. Remember, he told Gideon over and over

  446. as Gideon shared with him his concerns

  447. and his lack of resume.

  448. He said,

  449. But I will be with you.

  450. And what do we see here

  451. but that very thing?

  452. God clothes him with his spirit

  453. so that he has all the power he needs

  454. to follow God's command.

  455. Brothers and sisters,

  456. we have seen an even greater demonstration

  457. of God's power.

  458. We know even more of God's love

  459. and power and authority

  460. than Gideon could ever dream.

  461. We have seen his demonstration

  462. when he sent his only son,

  463. our Lord Jesus,

  464. to live the perfect life

  465. that we should have lived on this earth

  466. and to die the death

  467. that we deserved.

  468. And we see the type of power

  469. that is at work

  470. that Ephesians tells us

  471. is accessible to us

  472. when he raises Jesus from the dead.

  473. In other words,

  474. it is resurrection power

  475. that is at work in you, Christian.

  476. You have even greater reason

  477. to hope than Gideon.

  478. It is the power

  479. that God uses

  480. to save hard-hearted people.

  481. It is the power

  482. that was strong enough

  483. to raise Jesus from the dead

  484. and is powerful enough

  485. to raise us as well.

  486. It is the power

  487. that gives us great hope

  488. and confidence

  489. as 1 Peter 1 tells us.

  490. We have this inheritance in heaven.

  491. And he describes it in this way.

  492. The inheritance is imperishable,

  493. undefiled,

  494. and unfading.

  495. In other words,

  496. there is nothing

  497. that happens here on earth

  498. that can touch

  499. or affect your inheritance there.

  500. Why is God worth

  501. taking a risk for?

  502. Because he has real power

  503. to really save.

  504. He gives us

  505. the only hope

  506. that can deliver

  507. on its promises.

  508. He does for us

  509. what he does for Gideon.

  510. The spirit of the Lord

  511. clothed him.

  512. That's why we follow him.

  513. That's why we obey him.

  514. That's why we trust him.

  515. That's why we sing to him.

  516. Let's pray.

  517. Let's pray.

  518. Our Father in heaven,

  519. we praise you

  520. and thank you

  521. that Jesus is not

  522. an idea

  523. or a suggestion

  524. or a teaching,

  525. but he is a person.

  526. He is God

  527. who became man,

  528. who came down,

  529. demonstrated your great love

  530. and your great power

  531. so that we could follow

  532. after you

  533. with confidence and hope.

  534. And we ask

  535. that you would be at work

  536. in our lives,

  537. that we would be willing

  538. to take a risk for you.

  539. That we would be willing

  540. to stand for what's true

  541. and to follow you

  542. when it's hard

  543. because we know

  544. that you are the one

  545. and only true

  546. and living God.

  547. That everything else

  548. that makes us promises

  549. and gives us hope

  550. ultimately is a lie.

  551. We thank you

  552. that that's not true

  553. of your son

  554. and our savior,

  555. our Lord Jesus.

  556. And so we pray

  557. all of these things

  558. in his name.

  559. Amen.

  560. Amen.

  561. Amen.

  562. Amen.

  563. Amen.

  564. Amen.

  565. Amen.

  566. Amen.

  567. Amen.

  568. Amen.

  569. Amen.

  570. Amen.

  571. Amen.

  572. Amen.

  573. Amen.

  574. Amen.

  575. Amen.
