  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here.

  4. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  5. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good they don't need God's grace.

  6. And no one so bad that they can't have it.

  7. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  8. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Judges.

  9. And you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  10. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  11. It's about the need for a true and faithful king.

  12. A king who can do what no human can do, which is to change the hearts of men.

  13. It's about the power of spirit-filled leadership.

  14. And it's about God's grace to hard-hearted people.

  15. People like you and me.

  16. We're picking up this week in the middle of the story of the book of Jethwa.

  17. I told you last week that this is one of the most challenging stories in all of Scripture to both understand and interpret.

  18. And we began last week with Jethwa arising as this judge who was coming to rescue God's people from the Ammonites.

  19. And everything was going great until the moment that he vowed a human sacrifice to earn somehow God's favor.

  20. And so you'll remember we talked about the fact that 18 years of serving foreign gods can't be undone in one day.

  21. The tragedy unfolds again this week as we see the conclusion.

  22. And once again we are faced with the necessary, the essential reality for God's people to constantly be formed and transformed by his word.

  23. And we're reminded of a tragedy that happens when we're not.

  24. So with that I invite you to turn with me now to Judges chapter 11.

    Judges 11 chapter mention

  25. We're going to start at verse 34.

  26. You can turn in your worship guide.

  27. You can turn on your phone.

  28. You can turn in your Bible.

  29. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  30. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  31. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  32. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 34.

  33. Then Jethwa came to his home at Mizpah.

  34. And behold, his daughter came out to meet him with tambourines and with dances.

  35. She was his only child.

  36. Besides her, he had neither son nor daughter.

  37. And as soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and said,

  38. Alas, my daughter, you have brought me very low, and you have become the cause of great trouble to me.

  39. For I have opened my mouth to the Lord, and I cannot take back my vow.

  40. And she said to him,

  41. My father, you have opened your mouth to the Lord.

  42. Do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth,

  43. now that the Lord has avenged you on your enemies, on the Ammonites.

  44. So she said to her father,

  45. Let this thing be done for me.

  46. Leave me alone two months,

  47. that I may go up and down on the mountains and weep for my virginity,

  48. I and my companions.

  49. Verse 38.

  50. So he said, Go.

  51. Then he sent her away for two months,

  52. and she departed, she and her companions,

  53. and wept for her virginity on the mountains.

  54. And at the end of two months,

  55. she returned to her father,

  56. who did with her according to his vow that he had made.

  57. She had never known a man,

  58. and it became a custom in Israel

  59. that the daughters of Israel went year by year

  60. to lament the daughter of Jethpah the Gileadite

  61. four days in the year.

  62. I invite you to pray with me

  63. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  64. Our Father in heaven,

  65. we thank you again that you haven't abandoned us.

  66. You haven't left us as orphans in a merciless universe,

  67. but instead, you come as a good father.

  68. You instruct us and guide us in your word.

  69. And we ask that you would do that very thing this morning,

  70. and that you would pour out your Holy Spirit here in this room on us

  71. in a special way,

  72. and that as we look at your word,

  73. you would open our eyes,

  74. that we would be able to understand it,

  75. to see it, to believe it,

  76. that you would use it to shape us,

  77. to form us, to change us.

  78. And most of all,

  79. we ask that you would show us Jesus,

  80. that we would see his beauty more and more,

  81. and that that would cause us to change,

  82. to look more like him.

  83. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name.

  84. Amen.

  85. Now, last week,

  86. we left off the story of Jephthah

  87. with a little bit of a cliffhanger.

  88. You'll remember in verses 30 and 31,

  89. Jephthah made this shocking vow

  90. that he was going to provide God with a human sacrifice,

  91. a burnt offering,

  92. if God would simply give him victory

  93. against the Ammonites.

  94. The tragedy, of course,

  95. is that God's Spirit was already on Jephthah

  96. when he made this promise,

  97. and so it reminded us of this fundamental misunderstanding

  98. that he had of God and his ways.

  99. Now, as we return to the story,

  100. the question that's looming is this,

  101. who is going to greet Jephthah?

  102. Remember, his vow was that

  103. the person who came to greet him would be the sacrifice.

  104. And so the tensions, in a sense,

  105. could not be higher for us.

  106. We're meant, as readers,

  107. to be on the edge of our seats

  108. as Jephthah returns home from his victory

  109. against the Ammonites.

  110. And we don't have to wait long

  111. to find out what happens.

  112. We're met with this dramatic irony,

  113. this contrast between the stakes of the story

  114. and the joy that we see from his daughter

  115. as she comes out.

  116. She's coming to greet him,

  117. this is verse 34,

  118. with tambourines and with dances.

  119. And so she thinks there's this great moment of celebration,

  120. but what she doesn't know

  121. is what we of the readers are already tracking with.

  122. She is going to be the one to be sacrificed.

  123. As if that was not bad enough,

  124. the narrator ratchets it up again for us.

  125. It is not simply that it's Jephthah's daughter

  126. who comes out to greet him,

  127. but it is his only daughter.

  128. We're told that not once,

  129. but twice to drive it home.

  130. She was his only child.

  131. Besides her, he had neither son nor daughter.

  132. We discussed last week the fact,

  133. some commentators point out,

  134. who would we expect to greet Jephthah

  135. but the women of his house

  136. who are coming to applaud him for his victory.

  137. They're grateful he's returned, right?

  138. And so Jephthah,

  139. maybe he's hoping that this is going to be

  140. some sort of servant.

  141. Maybe he's hoping that the stakes are going to be low.

  142. Instead, they're as bad as they could be.

  143. And so I want us to pause for a moment

  144. and not miss the tragedy that this is.

  145. We were set up in verses 30 and 31

  146. that something, someone was coming.

  147. Someone from Jephthah's household

  148. would be the sacrifice.

  149. And in the gamble that he's made,

  150. Jephthah could not lose more.

  151. Now, as modern people,

  152. we might immediately turn to sentimental reasons

  153. that Jephthah's filled maybe with love for his daughter

  154. and this sort of fatherly affection for her

  155. and that's the great loss that's confronting him.

  156. But we cannot overlook the greater issue

  157. that's at play here for him,

  158. which is this.

  159. It's the issue of bloodline.

  160. Why is it so tragic that it's not just his daughter,

  161. but his only daughter?

  162. Jephthah's future has just been erased.

  163. Why is Jephthah so upset?

  164. Well, we're told multiple times

  165. that his daughter is going to grieve her virginity.

  166. In other words, Jephthah will have no grandchildren.

  167. Jephthah's line is going to stop with him.

  168. Seeing that tragedy helps us understand

  169. the way that he behaves in verse 35.

  170. Of course, Jephthah tears his clothes.

  171. What could be worse?

  172. Why is it that Jephthah seems more upset for himself

  173. than for his daughter?

  174. He seems kind of selfish here.

  175. Verse 35, he almost is blaming her, right?

  176. You have brought me very low.

  177. You have become the cause of great trouble to me.

  178. Jephthah's more upset for himself than for his daughter

  179. because his future is no more.

  180. Remember the promise he was made last time.

  181. Look, if you're victorious,

  182. if you're able to conquer the Ammonites,

  183. you're going to be the ruler of all of Gilead.

  184. And all of that is for nothing.

  185. What is it worth to be the ruler of Gilead

  186. if there's not a next generation?

  187. What is it worth to have power and influence and control

  188. when there's no one to share it with?

  189. What is it worth for him to have a great reversal

  190. from the one who was cast out

  191. because his mother was a prostitute

  192. if there's no one to pass it down to?

  193. And so there's this tragic irony in Jephthah's story.

  194. We're reminded of the Old Testament principle

  195. that the punishment does indeed fit the crime.

  196. Jephthah is looking by this vow

  197. to somehow convince God to help him

  198. so that he can secure his future,

  199. his reputation, and his power.

  200. And that very future reputation and power

  201. is what he has just lost.

  202. None of it is worth anything

  203. if his daughter is dead.

  204. Amen.

  205. The story continues in verses 36 and 37.

  206. His daughter simply tells him,

  207. look, you've vowed it,

  208. so I guess you have to do it.

  209. I just have one request.

  210. Can I have two months?

  211. Can you stay the execution for that long

  212. so I can grieve with my friends?

  213. Now Jephthah says yes,

  214. and so she goes,

  215. and we're told specifically

  216. she is mourning her virginity,

  217. which is a way of saying

  218. that her dream that she might have had

  219. of having a family

  220. is never going to materialize.

  221. Jephthah's grieving the end of his bloodline.

  222. We could say that his daughter

  223. is doing the same.

  224. And then verse 39, it happens.

  225. Jephthah told us,

  226. he told God he was going

  227. to have a burnt sacrifice.

  228. We're told in these very simple words,

  229. verse 39,

  230. Jephthah did with her

  231. according to his vow that he had made.

  232. And so we're left as the reader

  233. to sit in how bad things have become in Israel.

  234. And in case we've missed the point,

  235. we're told one more time,

  236. verse 39,

  237. she had never known a man.

  238. In case we missed it,

  239. Jephthah's line is over.

  240. Everything that he fought for

  241. and sacrificed for is for nothing.

  242. And so as the readers,

  243. Israel coming to this,

  244. we're just left sitting here.

  245. The narrator doesn't provide

  246. any further explanation.

  247. There's a real lack of detail

  248. and suddenly we just move on

  249. to the next part of the story.

  250. There's this tragedy here

  251. that meant to speak for itself.

  252. The question we're left sitting with is this.

  253. Why?

  254. Why did it have to end this way?

  255. Why is this the path

  256. that the story took?

  257. It seems senseless,

  258. irrational,

  259. unnecessary.

  260. I mean, just basic things

  261. from the Old Testament

  262. should have stopped this.

  263. We talked last week

  264. about Deuteronomy chapter 12,

    Deuteronomy 12 chapter mention

  265. which says human sacrifice

  266. is an abomination.

  267. God hates it.

  268. That's what the pagan nations do.

  269. That's not what his people do.

  270. Now you might come back and say,

  271. well, God also hates

  272. someone not keeping a vow.

  273. But then we see Leviticus chapter five

  274. provides a way out.

  275. It says, hey, if you break a vow,

  276. here's how you can make sacrifices

  277. to atone for it.

  278. In other words,

  279. there's a clear path

  280. out of this for Jethro.

  281. He doesn't have to proceed

  282. with the sacrifice.

  283. There is a way for him to escape.

  284. Breaking a vow is bad.

  285. It's nowhere as bad

  286. as sacrificing your daughter.

  287. Jethro could easily have turned

  288. a different way.

  289. Why did he not?

  290. The fundamental problem

  291. is this.

  292. Jethro did not know God's word.

  293. Jethro was shaped

  294. more by the nations

  295. around him

  296. and their gods

  297. than by the true God.

  298. And as big as a problem

  299. as that might seem,

  300. there's an even bigger problem.

  301. No one around Jethro

  302. knew God's word either.

  303. His daughter's out mourning

  304. for two months, right?

  305. That's plenty of time

  306. for counselors

  307. and advisors

  308. and priests

  309. to come to Jethro

  310. and say,

  311. look,

  312. you don't have to do this.

  313. It doesn't have to end this way.

  314. God hates this.

  315. He's provided a way out.

  316. And so the silence

  317. is deafening.

  318. This is how bad

  319. things have gotten

  320. in Israel.

  321. This is how far away

  322. God's people

  323. have moved

  324. from God's word.

  325. It is possible

  326. to return to God,

  327. to truly want

  328. to worship him

  329. as Israel did.

  330. Remember,

  331. the end of chapter 10,

  332. and yet

  333. be so

  334. fundamentally

  335. ignorant

  336. of his ways.

  337. it's possible

  338. to have a sincere

  339. desire

  340. to serve God

  341. and yet

  342. not know

  343. the way

  344. he calls us

  345. to walk.

  346. A friend of mine

  347. who's a pastor

  348. told me a story

  349. of his

  350. from a few years ago.

  351. He was visiting

  352. his brother

  353. and his sister-in-law,

  354. and his sister-in-law

  355. had just become

  356. a Christian,

  357. and she was

  358. so excited

  359. about what she

  360. was learning

  361. about Jesus

  362. and about her faith

  363. that she was just

  364. eager to share it

  365. with her whole

  366. community and her friends.

  367. And since her

  368. brother-in-law

  369. was coming to visit

  370. and he was a pastor,

  371. she thought,

  372. I'm going to ask him

  373. for some advice.

  374. How can I do better

  375. at sharing the gospel?

  376. Because it just,

  377. it seems to be

  378. so challenging.

  379. And so my friend

  380. asked her,

  381. he said,

  382. okay,

  383. tell me about

  384. some of the challenges

  385. that you're facing.

  386. And she said,

  387. well,

  388. it was just hard

  389. to share the gospel

  390. because it was so loud.

  391. Because we had all

  392. gone out together

  393. to the strip club.

  394. And so just the volume

  395. was so high,

  396. you know,

  397. it was hard for me

  398. to share.

  399. And it was also hard

  400. because it was late at night,

  401. it was 2 a.m.,

  402. and like I was trying

  403. to formulate thoughts

  404. to share with them,

  405. but I was also

  406. a little drunk,

  407. you know?

  408. And so it was hard

  409. for me to kind of

  410. speak clearly

  411. and get the thoughts

  412. out that I wanted.

  413. So my friend's

  414. sitting there,

  415. right,

  416. like,

  417. what do I say?

  418. Yeah,

  419. I can see how

  420. being at the strip club

  421. and being drunk

  422. would make it hard

  423. to share about Jesus.

  424. On the one hand,

  425. right,

  426. he wants to come in.

  427. Wow,

  428. there's this great zeal

  429. for God

  430. and his ways,

  431. right?

  432. You're learning

  433. about Jesus

  434. and what he means

  435. for you,

  436. and you want

  437. to share it

  438. with others.

  439. Like,

  440. I want to champion

  441. that and praise that.

  442. And on the other hand,

  443. you have so much

  444. to learn about sin,

  445. about what God

  446. calls us to,

  447. the way of life

  448. we're supposed

  449. to walk in.

  450. That there are parts

  451. of the old life

  452. that still have a hold.

  453. Now,

  454. you'll see this

  455. on the back

  456. of your worship guide

  457. talking about Satan's

  458. devices in taking

  459. out the believers.

  460. It tells us this,

  461. Satan knows

  462. that a saint

  463. without a knowledge

  464. of the gospel

  465. is as vulnerable

  466. as an army

  467. without ammunition.

  468. Christian,

  469. do you have

  470. the ammunition

  471. you need?

  472. Are you shaped

  473. by God's word?

  474. Are you shaped

  475. by the world

  476. outside?

  477. Knowing God's word

  478. is an element

  479. of what we've been

  480. talking about

  481. as the theme

  482. of Judges,

  483. this constant need

  484. for spiritual renewal

  485. and revival

  486. among God's people.

  487. Why is it

  488. that we return

  489. every week

  490. to hear what God

  491. has to say to us

  492. in his word?

  493. Why is it

  494. that we gather

  495. as small groups

  496. in Bible studies

  497. throughout the week?

  498. It is this,

  499. because it shows us

  500. the path

  501. to life.

  502. why do we

  503. pay careful

  504. attention

  505. to what God

  506. has to say

  507. to us?

  508. Because it protects

  509. us from great

  510. danger.

  511. Why do we

  512. listen?

  513. Because the

  514. philosophies

  515. and the values

  516. of this world

  517. are not

  518. harmless.

  519. Learning from God

  520. and his word

  521. is not

  522. some sort

  523. of theoretical

  524. exercise

  525. that we

  526. do

  527. so we can

  528. be pleased

  529. with how much

  530. more we know.

  531. No,

  532. it is the way

  533. that we walk

  534. in life.

  535. It is the way

  536. that God

  537. protects us

  538. from horrific

  539. things

  540. that the world

  541. says are normal.

  542. It is the way

  543. we prevent

  544. ourselves

  545. from drinking

  546. poison

  547. and pouring

  548. it out

  549. on others.

  550. The pagan

  551. culture around

  552. him has

  553. told Jethpah

  554. that death

  555. and destruction

  556. are normal

  557. and necessary.

  558. Brothers

  559. and sisters,

  560. our culture

  561. tells us

  562. the same

  563. thing.

  564. Our culture

  565. also tells us

  566. that death

  567. and destruction

  568. are normal

  569. and healthy

  570. and necessary.

  571. we have

  572. not

  573. moved

  574. beyond

  575. human

  576. sacrifice.

  577. Of course,

  578. it takes

  579. different forms

  580. in our world.

  581. It could be

  582. the human

  583. sacrifice

  584. of abortion

  585. or euthanasia

  586. or assisted

  587. suicide.

  588. It is the

  589. mutilation

  590. and chemical

  591. castration

  592. of children

  593. that reminds

  594. us our

  595. culture

  596. is not

  597. that different.

  598. All

  599. those things

  600. to appease

  601. the gods

  602. of this

  603. world,

  604. the gods

  605. of convenience

  606. and ease

  607. and independence

  608. and autonomy.

  609. In fact,

  610. if you look

  611. at paganism,

  612. it always

  613. requires

  614. human

  615. sacrifice.

  616. The more

  617. pagan

  618. the culture,

  619. the less

  620. sacred

  621. life

  622. is.

  623. God's

  624. word

  625. protects

  626. us

  627. from

  628. many

  629. other

  630. lies

  631. as well.

  632. It protects

  633. us from

  634. the lie

  635. that the

  636. good life

  637. is one

  638. of consumption

  639. and pleasure

  640. and peak

  641. experiences.

  642. It protects

  643. us from the lie

  644. that we are

  645. autonomous

  646. and independent

  647. and we can

  648. redefine ourselves

  649. in whatever way

  650. we want.

  651. it protects

  652. us from the

  653. lie that

  654. whatever we

  655. want is

  656. always more

  657. important than

  658. the community.

  659. It protects

  660. us from the

  661. lie that our

  662. identity

  663. and our

  664. peace

  665. comes from

  666. how we use

  667. our sexual

  668. organs.

  669. we have

  670. to

  671. constantly

  672. push

  673. back

  674. on the

  675. world around

  676. us with

  677. the truth

  678. of God's

  679. word.

  680. It's why we

  681. read already

  682. from Romans

    Romans 12 chapter mention

  683. chapter 12.

  684. John read it

  685. for us.

  686. This is on

  687. page 2

  688. of your

  689. worship guide.

  690. Do not

  691. be conformed

  692. to this

  693. world but

  694. be transformed

  695. by the

  696. renewal

  697. of

  698. your

  699. mind.

  700. we are

  701. constantly

  702. being told

  703. by the

  704. culture and

  705. the world

  706. around us

  707. what is

  708. good and

  709. bad,

  710. what is

  711. true and

  712. right,

  713. what is

  714. healthy and

  715. unhealthy.

  716. And so we

  717. have to

  718. stand

  719. constantly

  720. with the

  721. truth of

  722. God's

  723. word.

  724. You'll see

  725. this on

  726. page 7

  727. of your

  728. worship guide

  729. from C.S.

  730. Lewis.

  731. Good

  732. philosophy

  733. must exist

  734. if for

  735. no other

  736. reason because

  737. bad philosophy

  738. needs to be

  739. answered.

  740. And if you

  741. live in this

  742. world, you

  743. know bad

  744. philosophy

  745. constantly

  746. needs to

  747. be answered.

  748. That's why we

  749. talk about here

  750. at Shine

  751. Mountain the

  752. importance of

  753. robust

  754. discipleship.

  755. We want

  756. that to be a

  757. key focus for

  758. us as a

  759. church.

  760. how else

  761. are we

  762. going to be

  763. transformed

  764. by the

  765. renewing of

  766. our minds?

  767. How else

  768. are we going

  769. to walk in

  770. the path of

  771. life?

  772. How else

  773. are we going

  774. to know

  775. what is

  776. good and

  777. true and

  778. right?

  779. In John

    John 10 chapter mention

  780. chapter 10,

  781. Jesus tells us

  782. two things.

  783. He tells us

  784. he's the

  785. good shepherd

  786. and he also

  787. tells us he's

  788. the door.

  789. In other

  790. words, he's

  791. the one who

  792. protects and

  793. guides his

  794. sheep.

  795. He's the one

  796. who keeps

  797. them far away

  798. from danger

  799. and tells them

  800. where good

  801. things are.

  802. In fact, he

  803. says this in

  804. verse 10,

  805. the thief comes

  806. only to steal

  807. and kill and

  808. destroy.

  809. I came that

  810. they may have

  811. life and have

  812. it abundantly.

  813. What do we

  814. see in the

  815. story of

  816. Jethpah if

  817. not the enemy

  818. coming to

  819. steal and

  820. kill and

  821. destroy?

  822. How is it

  823. that we have

  824. life and

  825. have it

  826. abundantly?

  827. We find it

  828. in God's

  829. word.

  830. And of course,

  831. ultimately, we

  832. find it in our

  833. Lord Jesus.

  834. He's the one

  835. who says,

  836. I am the

  837. shepherd.

  838. I am the

  839. good door.

  840. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  841. chapter 1

  842. tells us that

  843. Jesus is the

  844. wisdom of

  845. God.

  846. God in

  847. his word

  848. teaches us

  849. everything we

  850. need to

  851. know to

  852. have life.

  853. He protects

  854. us from

  855. great danger.

  856. Christian, he

  857. protects you

  858. from great

  859. danger.

  860. Will you be

  861. transformed by

  862. the renewing of

  863. your mind?

  864. God in

  865. his book,

  866. All the

  867. Light We

  868. Cannot See.

  869. Anthony

  870. Doerr, the

  871. author, won

  872. the Pulitzer

  873. Prize in

  874. 2015.

  875. And in this

  876. book, he

  877. tells the

  878. story of

  879. two children

  880. living during

  881. the same

  882. years leading

  883. up to and

  884. during World

  885. War II.

  886. One of the

  887. children is

  888. this young

  889. girl.

  890. His name is

  891. Mari Lohr.

  892. Marilor and

  893. her father.

  894. She lives in

  895. Paris and her

  896. father is a

  897. single parent.

  898. He has many

  899. challenges as

  900. many parents do.

  901. He has a

  902. particular challenge

  903. though which is

  904. that Mari Lohr is

  905. blind because of

  906. cataracts.

  907. Now her father

  908. wants her to

  909. know how to get

  910. around the city of

  911. Paris and how to

  912. navigate the world

  913. but of course that's

  914. challenging right

  915. because his daughter

  916. cannot see.

  917. He loves his

  918. daughter though and

  919. so he wants to

  920. figure out a

  921. solution.

  922. How can I give

  923. her the tools

  924. that she needs

  925. to survive despite

  926. this challenge that

  927. she has?

  928. And so he comes up

  929. with the solution.

  930. He builds this

  931. small detailed

  932. model of the

  933. streets of Paris

  934. around their

  935. homes.

  936. And he tells his

  937. daughter you need

  938. to run your

  939. hands along the

  940. models of the

  941. street so that

  942. you can learn how

  943. to find your way

  944. around in our

  945. neighborhood.

  946. And so for

  947. months Mari Lohr

  948. is running her

  949. hands along the

  950. model that her

  951. father's built

  952. trying to learn

  953. every curve and

  954. corner of the

  955. streets around

  956. them.

  957. Her father takes

  958. her out to

  959. practice.

  960. He'll move her

  961. around and then

  962. try to help her

  963. get back to their

  964. house so she knows

  965. how to return.

  966. At first she has

  967. little success but

  968. as they practice

  969. more and more she

  970. is able to

  971. navigate her way

  972. around the city

  973. of Paris.

  974. Brothers and

  975. sisters,

  976. our heavenly

  977. father has given

  978. us a model for

  979. how the world

  980. works.

  981. He means for us

  982. to run our

  983. hands over and

  984. over again so

  985. that we can find

  986. our way home.

  987. Let's pray.

  988. Our father in

  989. heaven we do

  990. thank you and

  991. praise you that

  992. you give us

  993. life in your

  994. word.

  995. We ask that

  996. you would

  997. grow our

  998. love and

  999. our knowledge

  1000. of it not

  1001. for the sake

  1002. of intellectual

  1003. exercises or

  1004. pride but that

  1005. we could be

  1006. protected from

  1007. great evil and

  1008. that we could

  1009. follow you in

  1010. great life.

  1011. We thank you

  1012. that this life

  1013. doesn't come

  1014. through anything

  1015. we've done,

  1016. anything we've

  1017. earned or

  1018. deserved, but

  1019. instead it comes

  1020. through our

  1021. Lord Jesus.

  1022. So we ask

  1023. these things in

  1024. his name.

  1025. Amen.
