  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain

  2. Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. Special welcome if you are new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here,

  4. and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community. And as we follow Jesus together,

  6. we become convinced that there's no one so good. They don't need God's grace,

  7. and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what

  8. God has to say to us in His Word. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Judges,

  9. and you'll remember that the book of Judges is about many things. It's about the need for

  10. constant renewal and revival among God's people. It's about the need for a true and faithful king,

  11. a king who can do what no human can do, which is to change the hearts of men.

  12. It's about the power of Spirit-filled leadership, and it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people,

  13. people like you and me. We've been taking a look at the story of Jethwa in three parts,

  14. and we're now to the third part, the very end. Last week, we saw the most tragic portion of Jethwa's

  15. story. We were reminded that Jethwa doesn't know anything. He was ignorant of God's Word

  16. and His ways. This morning, as we end Jethwa's story, we're going to come back to a theme that

  17. has shown up over and over again throughout chapters 8 through 10, which is the sorry state

  18. of Israel, that groups and individuals are loyal only to themselves. We'll see the havoc that that

  19. tribalism, that ego has on God's people. And so I invite you with that to turn with me in God's Word.

  20. We're now in Judges chapter 12. You can turn in your Bible. You can turn on your phone.

    Judges 12 chapter mention

  21. You can turn in your worship guide. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word,

  22. and God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  23. and it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. And so that's why we

  24. read now Judges chapter 12, starting at verse 1. The men of Ephraim were called to arms, and they

    Judges 12 chapter mention

  25. crossed to Zaphon and said to Jethwa, Why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites and did not

  26. call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire. And Jethwa said to them, I and my

  27. people had a great dispute with the Ammonites. And when I called you, you did not save me from their

  28. hand. And when I saw that you would not save me, I took my life in my hand and crossed over against

  29. the Ammonites. And the Lord gave them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight

  30. against me? Verse 4. Then Jethwa gathered all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim. And the men of

  31. Gilead struck Ephraim because they said, You are fugitives of Ephraim, you Gileadites, in the midst of

  32. Ephraim and Manasseh. And the Gileadites captured the fords of the Jordan against the Ephraimites. And when

  33. any of the fugitives of Ephraim said, Let me go over, the men of Gilead said to him, Are you an Ephraimite?

  34. When he said no, they said to him, Then say Shibboleth. And he said Sibboleth, for he could not pronounce it

  35. right. Then they seized him and slaughtered him at the fords of the Jordan. At that time, 42,000 of

  36. the Ephraimites fell. Jethwa judged Israel six years. Then Jethwa the Gileadite died and was buried

  37. in his city in Gilead. Verse 8. After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. He had 30 sons and 30

  38. daughters that he gave in marriage outside his clan, and 30 daughters he brought in from outside for his

  39. sons. And he judged Israel seven years. Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.

  40. After him, Elon the Zebulonite judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years. Then Elon the Zebulonite

  41. died and was buried at Eijilin in the land of Zebulon. Verse 13. After him, Abdan the son of Hillel,

  42. the Pirithonite, judged Israel. He had 40 sons and 30 grandsons who rode on 70 donkeys,

  43. and he judged Israel eight years. Then Abdan the son of Hillel, the Pirithonite, died and was buried

  44. at Pirithon in the land of Ephraim in the hill country of the Amalekites. I invite you to pray with

  45. me as we come to this portion of God's Word. Our Father in heaven, we praise you again that you

  46. give us your Word, that you teach us, that you instruct us. And we confess again that we need

  47. your help, that unless your Spirit is with us, we will not be able to understand and believe and apply

  48. what you have here for us. And so we ask that you would give us that help, that most of all you would

  49. use this passage to show us Christ, that he would be more and more beautiful and glorious and lovely to

  50. us. We ask these things in the mighty name of him, Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

  51. For us to understand what's happening in this passage before us in chapter 12,

  52. it's important for us to remember briefly what has come in the last several chapters.

  53. You'll remember back in chapter 10, things were getting so bad in Israel that we were told they

  54. were not just worshiping some of the idols, that's what they had done before, but in fact they were

  55. worshiping all of the idols. The judges' cycle, some call it judges' spiral, continues as the judges go

  56. deeper and deeper into sin and rebellion. And so God says, look, you have not repented, I'm not going to

  57. help you. But then they cry out, God has mercy on them, he raises up Jephthah to save them from the

  58. Ammonites. And that's what we saw last week. Jephthah, in fact, saves them from the Ammonites.

  59. And so we would expect at this point for there to be some peace in the land, right? There would be

  60. celebration of some sort. Israel would come together. Maybe they would thank Jephthah, right,

  61. for all the good that he's done for them. But instead of that, at the very beginning, verse 1,

  62. we encounter the opposite. The Ammonites are done, we should expect peace. But no, there is an army

  63. that shows up on the doorstep of Jephthah. The men of Ephraim, this is verse 1, were called to arms,

  64. and they crossed to Zaphon and said to Jephthah, why did you cross over to fight against the Ammonites

  65. and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house over you with fire. They don't send a

  66. diplomat. They don't send a representative to say, hey, we're upset. No, this entire army crosses from the

  67. heartland of Israel in the west across the Jordan River to a city on the east so that they can tell

  68. Jephthah that it is time for his house to be burned down. There's a whole military force that comes,

  69. and we find out later in verse 6 how big this force is. Jephthah ends up killing 42,000 of them.

  70. The men of Ephraim roll thick. They are here to let him know how mad they are. And their response is

  71. what we would call a disproportionate response. Their ego has been damaged, and so they're going

  72. to respond by wrecking Jephthah and his people. This is pretty extreme to state the obvious.

  73. Things are getting out of control in the land of Judges. Now, as I mentioned during our confession

  74. of faith, we've seen this same issue before. The men of Ephraim were angry back in chapter 8. They

  75. were angry at Gideon because Gideon did not invite them. What they didn't do there, though, was threaten

  76. to destroy anything. And so their anger, their response is becoming worse and worse. Where does this anger

  77. come from? Well, we know from last time they were mad at Gideon back in chapter 8 because they were

  78. not invited, and Gideon is able to calm everything down by stroking their egos. Remember, Gideon says,

  79. you guys are so great. In fact, what I did is nothing in comparison to what you did. You know, the men of

  80. Ephraim are the best. And so that seems to calm them down. Not so this time. Gideon stroked their ego

  81. Jethro. Jethro does not have Gideon's diplomacy. Remember, Jethro is a wild man. And so he does what wild

  82. men do. He starts a fight. And what a fight it is. And so we need to see and remember and understand

  83. here that this is worse than ever. We are continuing in the free fall of God's people in the book of Judges.

  84. Verse 4, they have this fight. It is blue on blue. Gilead versus Ephraim. Israelites versus Israelites.

  85. Turns out that Ephraim's talk is bigger than their game. Jethro makes quick work of them.

  86. And then he decides it's not enough to make quick work of them. They're in a tight spot. He's going to

  87. make it even tighter. Remember, I told you they've crossed over the Jordan River. They brought this

  88. entire army with them into a different land, the place where Jethro's people are, the place of Gilead.

  89. So what are they going to have to do if they want to escape? Well, they're going to have to cross back

  90. over. Jethro realizes this. Remember, we know that Jethro's a great warrior. He's a great tactician.

  91. And so he decides, look, I know exactly what to do. I'm going to get rid of these men of Ephraim.

  92. We're going to take the fords. So that when they try to cross back over from the east to the west,

  93. they're going to have to go through what we've set up.

  94. In a sense, he's telling Ephraim this. Two can play this game. You want to be tribalistic?

  95. I'll be tribalistic. You want to make a big deal about honor? I'll make a big deal about honor.

  96. Game recognizes game. And it turns out there's some sort of linguistic difference between these two

  97. groups. His people are able to pronounce Shibboleth with the H. Their people are able to pronounce it

  98. without the H. And so this has become a cultural term that of a Shibboleth is a test to know if

  99. someone belongs in your group. And of course, again and again, and this is what we see in verses five and

  100. six, they fail the test. That's how Jethwa is able, verse six, to take out 42,000.

  101. Jethwa here goes beyond what self-defense allows.

  102. Jethwa is not just defending himself. No, he is purging and cleansing. Jethwa is out for revenge.

  103. Remember, I told you when we first came to Jethwa, hard times call for hard men.

  104. And Jethwa is nothing if not a hard man for better or for worse.

  105. After all of this happens, verse seven, we're told Jethwa judged Israel six years.

  106. And there is an absence here of what we've been told in the past.

  107. In the past, when we've seen a judge and we're told how long he judged, we are also told,

  108. and the land had rest. The land had peace for however many years.

  109. We don't hear that here with Jethwa because the land has no peace.

  110. The violence within Israel increases more and more.

  111. So the point of the story is this.

  112. The selfishness and the tribalism and the violence of Israel has reached a new low.

  113. Things are worse than they've ever been.

  114. And this draws us to the overarching theme of the previous few chapters and the chapters to come,

  115. which is that more and more what we're seeing in the nation of Israel is that they look just like the nations around them.

  116. That's what we saw last week, right?

  117. Jethwa is acting as if Yahweh was a pagan god.

  118. He brings this human sacrifice because that's what the nations around them do.

  119. Here the same thing is happening.

  120. What is it that's true of the nations around them?

  121. Well, that nothing and no one is greater than me and my tribe.

  122. My ego is of ultimate importance.

  123. Nothing is more important than protecting and defending that.

  124. If it requires revenge, I'll take revenge.

  125. If it requires violence, there will be violence.

  126. If you attack my honor, I will attack your honor.

  127. Israel is cannibalizing itself.

  128. God doesn't even need to send in the other nations at this point.

  129. They are doing a great job destroying each other.

  130. They have lost all perspective, all sense of unity because tribalism and self-interest rule the day.

  131. They rule the day for Ephraim as they come to attack Jethwa for not giving them the honor they believe they deserve.

  132. They rule the day for Jethwa as he slaughters his brothers rather than seeking peace.

  133. Now the text hints at this in verse 7.

  134. It is not just Jethwa who dies.

  135. It is Jethwa the Gileadite.

  136. And in case you think that's just a mistake, remember how the last chapter ended.

  137. Verse 40 of chapter 11.

  138. The daughters of Israel went year by year to lament the daughter of Jethwa, the Gileadite.

  139. Jethwa is a Gileadite first.

  140. The men of Ephraim are men of Ephraim first.

  141. God's people have lost their unity together.

  142. In fact, as we talk as a church about what it means for us to have thick community,

  143. the kind of community that goes beyond simply knowing someone's name and saying something pleasant,

  144. but being deeply invested in each other's lives, it is this that is one of the greatest threats.

  145. You may have seen this on page 3 of your worship guide.

  146. Israel shares no higher allegiance.

  147. Judges provides for us a warning.

  148. As we think about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people,

  149. this particular passage reminds us of our need for this,

  150. our need not to lose the big picture out of concern for personal honor.

  151. Not to value what is good for us rather than what is good for the community.

  152. And yet the temptation, the pull, the draw, the lie is constant.

  153. That shows up in the person who doesn't get the attention he wants,

  154. so he creates drama to get it.

  155. It comes in the person who doesn't get the attention he wants,

  156. It comes in the woman who congratulates herself that everything would fall apart except for me.

  157. It comes in the man who's outraged that he doesn't receive the honor and the praise that he believes he deserves.

  158. It comes in the person who only thinks about what is best for me and my clique, my constituency,

  159. rather than what's going to bring the whole community together.

  160. It comes in the person who complains that no one helps,

  161. and yet loves to be seen doing everything.

  162. God's people are meant to be one people on one mission.

  163. They're not meant to be different people on different missions.

  164. God's people are one people with one mission,

  165. not different people with different missions.

  166. And that the Bible reminds us again and again that we have ultimately two options.

  167. We can go on a mission with each other,

  168. or we can go on a mission against each other.

  169. We can go on a mission with each other.

  170. We can go on a mission against each other.

  171. That's our warning from Judges 12.

  172. Our warning not to become like the nations around us,

  173. not to be dragged in to the petty bickering and tribalism

  174. that characterizes so much of our world.

  175. And Judges also reminds us that left to ourselves,

  176. that is exactly where we will go.

  177. And so we need to remember the words of our Lord Jesus.

  178. Remember, I've told you before,

  179. Jesus tells us, Luke 10, verse 20,

    Luke 10:20

  180. as disciples come back,

  181. they're so excited about the success they've experienced in ministry.

  182. And Jesus tells them this,

  183. Do not rejoice in this,

  184. that the spirits are subject to you,

  185. but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

  186. How do we avoid the fate of Israel?

  187. How can we run away from the temptation of the men of Ephraim?

  188. It's to remember that our glory comes from God and God alone.

  189. Our honor is that our names are written in the book of life.

  190. The praise and thanks we get

  191. is not worth comparing

  192. to following and serving our Lord Jesus.

  193. The honor that we seek after

  194. is hearing,

  195. well done, good and faithful servant.

  196. That is what is great.

  197. Joy and contentment and honor

  198. come from that and that alone.

  199. Remember I mentioned during our confession of faith,

  200. our solution to seeking our glory over God's glory

  201. is to remember how great God is.

  202. It is the difference

  203. between climbing a 14er

  204. and making a 14er.

  205. You think you have glory?

  206. Check out God's glory.

  207. You think you have power?

  208. Check out God's power.

  209. You think you're impressive?

  210. God is impressive.

  211. In fact, it's we see God as great

  212. that we abandon our own delusions.

  213. And so it's not just that God gives us glory.

  214. It's not just that we rejoice

  215. that our names are written in heaven.

  216. It is that God's glory eclipses ours.

  217. That is how we follow Jesus

  218. as one people together.

  219. We will not

  220. and we cannot

  221. abandon our own agendas

  222. and pride and ambition

  223. until we see

  224. how great and glorious God is.

  225. we will not

  226. and we cannot

  227. rest

  228. from our own agenda

  229. until we see

  230. how glorious and great

  231. God's agenda is.

  232. we will not

  233. and we cannot

  234. turn away

  235. from our individual missions

  236. until we have caught

  237. the vision

  238. of God's mission.

  239. It is God's beauty

  240. and power

  241. and glory

  242. and majesty

  243. and mercy

  244. and grace

  245. and authority

  246. that causes

  247. everything else

  248. to pale.

  249. it is great things

  250. that give us

  251. perspective

  252. on small things.

  253. I recently

  254. re-read

  255. The Hobbit

  256. by J.R.R. Tolkien

  257. and if you're

  258. a Gandalf

  259. shows up one day

  260. and he recruits

  261. Bilbo

  262. to this adventure

  263. this adventure

  264. to go out

  265. with the dwarves

  266. and the dwarves

  267. need to go on adventure

  268. because the dragon

  269. smog

  270. has taken over

  271. their home.

  272. You'll remember

  273. that they

  274. have the lonely mountain

  275. or at least

  276. they had the lonely mountain

  277. at one point

  278. the dragon

  279. has driven them out

  280. and it's even worse

  281. than that

  282. it's not just

  283. that he's driven them out

  284. he is also

  285. sitting

  286. sleeping

  287. napping

  288. on top of all

  289. of their treasure.

  290. And so the dwarves

  291. have lost their home

  292. and

  293. they have lost

  294. their gold.

  295. Now the dwarves

  296. have great doubts

  297. about Bilbo.

  298. It's unclear

  299. to them

  300. whether he is

  301. an asset

  302. or a liability

  303. and there's

  304. tension

  305. ongoing

  306. between him

  307. and them.

  308. In fact

  309. he proves himself

  310. to be a liability

  311. at multiple points.

  312. They go out

  313. onto their adventure

  314. what does Bilbo do?

  315. He sleeps in.

  316. He gets up late

  317. he has to race

  318. to catch up with them.

  319. They run into

  320. some trolls.

  321. What does Bilbo do?

  322. Bilbo almost

  323. gets them killed.

  324. Gandalf has to

  325. show up

  326. to the rescue

  327. at the last minute

  328. to protect

  329. all of them.

  330. Sometimes

  331. maybe many times

  332. the dwarves

  333. regret

  334. bringing Bilbo.

  335. In fact at one point

  336. you'll remember

  337. Bilbo disappears

  338. and the dwarves

  339. have this conversation

  340. with Gandalf

  341. where they say

  342. hey why don't we

  343. just leave him behind?

  344. We don't actually

  345. need him.

  346. Right?

  347. Bilbo for

  348. his part

  349. dreams constantly

  350. of returning

  351. to his hobbit

  352. hole.

  353. And yet Bilbo

  354. also ends up

  355. being an asset

  356. at some points.

  357. Bilbo saves them

  358. later on

  359. from the spiders.

  360. He saves them

  361. from the wood elves.

  362. Bilbo

  363. goes first

  364. against the dragon

  365. smog.

  366. In the midst

  367. of all these

  368. tensions

  369. and egos

  370. Thorin

  371. the head dwarf

  372. has an ego.

  373. Gandalf by the way

  374. shows his ego

  375. a few times.

  376. what is it

  377. that holds

  378. all of them

  379. together?

  380. Why do the dwarves

  381. not leave

  382. Bilbo behind

  383. and why does

  384. Bilbo not run

  385. home?

  386. It's because

  387. they're all

  388. seeking

  389. the treasure.

  390. They are

  391. different people

  392. with one

  393. mission.

  394. And so they

  395. have to work

  396. together

  397. and they have

  398. to partner

  399. together

  400. to make

  401. it to the

  402. end.

  403. Brothers and

  404. sisters

  405. God has

  406. given us

  407. his greatest

  408. treasure

  409. in the gospel.

  410. God has

  411. given us

  412. his greatest

  413. treasure

  414. in his

  415. son.

  416. And when

  417. and as

  418. we are

  419. tempted

  420. to be

  421. concerned

  422. about our

  423. own honor

  424. and praise

  425. and success

  426. and glory

  427. we are

  428. reminded

  429. again and

  430. again of

  431. the true

  432. mission

  433. that we

  434. are on.

  435. We're

  436. reminded

  437. again and

  438. again that

  439. honor and

  440. ego pale

  441. in comparison

  442. to what God

  443. has for us.

  444. And so

  445. in the midst

  446. of human

  447. imperfection

  448. and sin

  449. we work

  450. together

  451. we partner

  452. together

  453. to make

  454. it to the

  455. end

  456. because

  457. God's

  458. treasure

  459. is

  460. greater.

  461. Gandalf

  462. jumps in

  463. and out

  464. of the

  465. hobbit.

  466. Sometimes

  467. he's with

  468. them

  469. sometimes

  470. he's

  471. not.

  472. At one point

  473. he is

  474. with them

  475. for a time

  476. when they're

  477. in Mirkwood

  478. Forest.

  479. He walks

  480. with them

  481. all the way

  482. to the

  483. forest.

  484. He's

  485. sort of

  486. this

  487. protective

  488. presence

  489. and then

  490. he has

  491. to leave

  492. them.

  493. he reminds

  494. the dwarves

  495. how important

  496. Bilbo is

  497. to their

  498. adventure

  499. even as

  500. they consider

  501. leaving him

  502. behind.

  503. He encourages

  504. them to have

  505. faith in him

  506. and then

  507. he reminds

  508. them to

  509. persevere

  510. and his

  511. exhortation

  512. his words

  513. to them

  514. are this

  515. think

  516. of the

  517. treasure

  518. at the

  519. end.

  520. Christian

  521. think

  522. of the

  523. treasure

  524. at the

  525. end.

  526. Let's

  527. pray.

  528. Our

  529. Father in

  530. heaven

  531. we

  532. praise you

  533. and thank

  534. you for

  535. your word

  536. which encourages

  537. us and

  538. also warns

  539. us.

  540. We thank

  541. you for

  542. the warning

  543. of the

  544. men of

  545. Ephraim

  546. and we

  547. ask that

  548. you would

  549. be at

  550. work

  551. us

  552. individually

  553. and as

  554. a

  555. community

  556. that you

  557. would pull

  558. us

  559. together

  560. as

  561. different

  562. people

  563. on one

  564. mission

  565. that we

  566. wouldn't

  567. be

  568. concerned

  569. about

  570. our

  571. power

  572. and honor

  573. and praise

  574. and glory

  575. because we

  576. would know

  577. that it

  578. comes from

  579. you

  580. and that

  581. your glory

  582. is so much

  583. greater

  584. than our

  585. glory.

  586. But that

  587. would free

  588. us.

  589. It would

  590. give us

  591. peace

  592. to worry

  593. not about

  594. our standing

  595. but simply

  596. to follow

  597. you in

  598. faith.

  599. We thank

  600. you that

  601. we haven't

  602. earned or

  603. deserved

  604. these things

  605. and so we

  606. simply ask

  607. them in the

  608. mighty name

  609. of Jesus

  610. Christ.

  611. Amen.
