  1. Good morning.

  2. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  4. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad that you're here.

  6. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  9. They don't need God's grace.

  10. And no one's so bad that they can't have it,

  11. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  12. We're continuing our series in the book of Judges,

  13. and you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  14. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  15. It's about the need for a true and faithful king,

  16. a king who can do what no human can do,

  17. which is to change the hearts of men.

  18. It's about the power of spirit-filled leadership,

  19. and it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people,

  20. people like you and me.

  21. Last time we were in Judges, we finished the story of Jethwa,

  22. and you'll remember that it did not end well.

  23. There was disunity among God's people,

  24. so much so that they were fighting and killing one another.

  25. This morning we move on to the story of the judge Samson.

  26. Samson's going to be the last judge we encounter in Judges,

  27. and so we've made it quite some time.

  28. And you'll remember our principle,

  29. the main principle I've been pressing home in interpreting Judges,

  30. comes from chapter 2, verse 19,

  31. which tells us each generation was more corrupt than the one before them.

  32. And so we see this constant downward trajectory or this spiral.

  33. So the very first judge, I told you,

  34. Othniel was the best judge of all time.

  35. Samson, the last judge, the worst judge of all time.

  36. And so things are getting worse and worse in Israel,

  37. if that can be believed,

  38. that they're even worse than under the judge Jethwa.

  39. But in fact, that is the case.

  40. And after we end the story of Samson,

  41. we will see Israel continue in decline.

  42. And so our question this morning as we come to Judges chapter 13 is very simple.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  43. What is our hope when it appears that the lights have gone out?

  44. What is our hope when it appears that people have forgotten God completely?

  45. What is our hope in our lives when we look and we see tragedy and devastation behind us?

  46. Not just because of what other people have done,

  47. but because of what we have done as well.

  48. So with that, I invite you to turn with me to Judges chapter 13.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  49. You can turn in your Bible.

  50. You can turn on your phone.

  51. You can turn in your worship guide.

  52. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  53. Proverbs chapter 30 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  54. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  55. And so that's why we read now Judges chapter 13, starting at verse 1.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  56. And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  57. So the Lord gave them into the hand of the Philistines for 40 years.

  58. There was a certain man of Zorah of the tribe of the Danites whose name was Manoah.

  59. And his wife was barren and had no children.

  60. And the angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her,

  61. Behold, you are barren and have not born children, but you shall conceive and bear a son.

  62. Therefore be careful and drink no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean.

  63. For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son.

  64. No razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb.

  65. And he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Philistines.

  66. Then the woman came and told her husband,

  67. A man of God came to me.

  68. And his appearance was like the appearance of the angel of God, very awesome.

  69. I did not ask him where he was from, and he did not tell me his name.

  70. But he said to me, Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son.

  71. So then drink no wine or strong drink and eat nothing unclean.

  72. For the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb to the day of his death.

  73. Verse 8.

  74. Then Manoah prayed to the Lord and said,

  75. O Lord, please let the man of God whom you sent come again to us

  76. and teach us what we are to do with the child who will be born.

  77. And God listened to the voice of Manoah,

  78. and the angel of the Lord came again to the woman as she sat in the field.

  79. But Manoah, her husband, was not with her.

  80. So the woman ran quickly and told her husband,

  81. Behold, the man who came to me the other day has appeared to me.

  82. And Manoah arose and went after his wife and came to the man and said to him,

  83. Are you the man who spoke to this woman?

  84. And he said, I am.

  85. Verse 12.

  86. And Manoah said, Now when your words come true,

  87. what is to be the child's manner of life and what is his mission?

  88. And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah,

  89. Of all that I said to the woman, let her be careful.

  90. She may not eat of anything that comes from the vine,

  91. neither let her drink wine or strong drink,

  92. or eat any unclean thing.

  93. All that I commanded her, let her observe.

  94. Verse 15.

  95. Manoah said to the angel of the Lord,

  96. Please let us detain you and prepare a young goat for you.

  97. And the angel of the Lord said to Manoah,

  98. If you detain me, I will not eat of your food.

  99. But if you prepare a burnt offering, then offer it to the Lord.

  100. For Manoah did not know that he was the angel of the Lord.

  101. And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord,

  102. What is your name?

  103. So that when your words come true, we may honor you.

  104. And the angel of the Lord said to him,

  105. Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?

  106. So Manoah took the young goat with a grain offering

  107. and offered it on the rock to the Lord,

  108. to the one who works wonders.

  109. And Manoah and his wife were watching.

  110. And when the flame went up toward heaven from the altar,

  111. the angel of the Lord went up in the flame of the altar.

  112. Now Manoah and his wife were watching,

  113. and they fell on their faces to the ground.

  114. Verse 21.

  115. The angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and to his wife.

  116. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord.

  117. And Manoah said to his wife,

  118. We shall surely die, for we have seen God.

  119. Verse 23.

  120. But his wife said to him,

  121. If the Lord had meant to kill us,

  122. he would not have accepted a burnt offering

  123. and a grain offering at our hands,

  124. or shown us all these things,

  125. or now announced to us such things as these.

  126. And the woman bore a son and called his name Samson.

  127. And the young man grew, and the Lord blessed him.

  128. And the Spirit of the Lord began to stir him

  129. in Mahanadan, between Zorah and Eshtel.

  130. I invite you to pray with me

  131. as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  132. Our Father in heaven,

  133. we do thank you one more time

  134. that you have spoken to us.

  135. You haven't left us to figure things out on our own,

  136. or to stumble around,

  137. but instead you've given us your Word

  138. to guide us and direct us.

  139. We thank you that it does more than that.

  140. It doesn't just guide and direct,

  141. but it shows us your Son and our Savior,

  142. our Lord Jesus,

  143. who died for us even when we were still sinners.

  144. It shows us your grace and your mercy,

  145. which we have not earned,

  146. and we do not deserve.

  147. And we ask that you would remind us

  148. of those things this morning,

  149. that we would see them in a fresh way.

  150. We'd believe them more than before.

  151. We'd live with greater hope.

  152. We thank you that we don't have to worry

  153. about whether we've earned these things

  154. or deserve them.

  155. We know that we don't, and we haven't.

  156. And so we simply ask for them

  157. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  158. Amen.

  159. Amen.

  160. If you've been with us through the book of Judges,

  161. I hope that you recognize the very first phrase

  162. that begins this chapter.

  163. It tells us,

  164. and the people of Israel again

  165. did what was evil in the sight of the Lord.

  166. And this is the phrase that begins

  167. basically every section.

  168. It's what we saw that began the story of Jethpah

  169. in Judges chapter 10.

    Judges 10 chapter mention

  170. It's the same phrase that began the story of Gideon.

  171. It's the phrase that began the story of Deborah

  172. in chapter four, and then Ehud and Othniel.

  173. We see the same thing,

  174. that there is this pattern in the book of Judges.

  175. And so hopefully you're getting used to it at this point,

  176. that the same things occur over and over.

  177. We find out also in verse one, what does the Lord do?

  178. The same thing he does every time, right?

  179. When they turn away from him,

  180. he gives them into the hand of a foreign country.

  181. This time it's into the hand of the Philistines.

  182. We get a hint though,

  183. that something is worse than before

  184. because it is not like last time.

  185. Remember when they're in the hands of the Ammonites,

  186. it's for 18 years.

  187. This time we get more than twice that.

  188. They are oppressed for 40 years.

  189. And so we've seen this before.

  190. It might be tempting for us to go into autopilot

  191. as we read chapter 13.

  192. Okay, here's another judge and another cycle.

  193. We know what has happened before.

  194. We know what's going to happen this time.

  195. Except suddenly there's a disruption.

  196. There is a deafening silence that we should feel here.

  197. There is something that has happened every other time

  198. that does not happen this time.

  199. There is something that God's people always do

  200. that they don't do.

  201. There is something missing between verse one and verse two.

  202. The people of Israel do not cry out to God.

  203. The people of Israel do not repent.

  204. The author of Judges is telling us this.

  205. Israel is closer to death than ever before.

  206. Israel has become so bad

  207. that she doesn't even need no to cry out to God for mercy.

  208. Israel has become so twisted in her view

  209. and understanding of the world

  210. that it feels normal at this point

  211. to have a foreign oppressor.

  212. Of course the Philistines are over us.

  213. That's just how life is.

  214. Of course we live among a pagan nation.

  215. That's just how things go.

  216. Israel has finally come to the point

  217. where she is inoculated

  218. against the presence of foreign rulers and foreign gods.

  219. This is normal, right?

  220. This is just the way it should be.

  221. It's been this way for years in the past.

  222. It'll be this way for years in the future.

  223. This is the pattern that I've told you about all along.

  224. Judges chapter two, verse 19 tells us

  225. every generation is getting worse.

  226. Every generation, the phrase is,

  227. is more corrupt than the generation before.

  228. They refuse to give up the ways of their fathers.

  229. Things in Israel are very bad.

  230. Israel doesn't just need help.

  231. Israel really needs help.

  232. Israel is not just wicked.

  233. Israel is really wicked.

  234. Israel is not just gone.

  235. She is real far gone.

  236. And it's not because of the Philistines.

  237. That's not the ultimate problem.

  238. The ultimate problem is that Israel has forgotten her God.

  239. The ultimate problem is that they are removed from reality

  240. more than ever before.

  241. It's with that missing section there

  242. that we come to verse two

  243. and we find out there is not just a problem

  244. for the people and nation of Israel.

  245. There's also a problem being faced

  246. by this particular couple.

  247. Manoah and his wife have a challenge.

  248. And the challenge is that they are not able

  249. to have children.

  250. And we might think this is somehow a coincidence,

  251. but in fact, these two things are meant to go together.

  252. The problem of Israel

  253. and the problem of Manoah and his wife

  254. are intertwined with one another.

  255. You'll see this on page nine of your worship guide.

  256. Just as Israel was helpless and hopeless,

  257. so were Manoah and his wife.

  258. Hopeless nation, hopeless couple.

  259. Not a coincidence.

  260. And so that returns us to our question,

  261. what does God do?

  262. What is our hope when it appears

  263. that the lights have been turned off?

  264. What is our hope when things are so bad

  265. that Israel does not even know

  266. that she needs to cry out to God?

  267. Well, again, we see these two things

  268. going side by side, hand in hand.

  269. Verse three,

  270. the angel of the Lord appears to Manoah's wife

  271. and says,

  272. behold, you are barren

  273. and have not born children,

  274. but you shall conceive and bear a son.

  275. Okay, great.

  276. That's a solution to the problem

  277. of Manoah and his wife.

  278. What's the solution to the problem

  279. of the people of Israel?

  280. Well, it turns out they are one and the same.

  281. Verse five,

  282. this son's going to be a Nazarite

  283. and he shall begin to save Israel

  284. from the hand of the Philistines.

  285. What God does for Manoah and his wife

  286. is the same thing he's going to do for Israel.

  287. He is going to bring hope

  288. where there is no hope.

  289. He is going to bring new life

  290. where there is despair.

  291. He's going to bring literal life

  292. to literal barrenness.

  293. He's going to bring spiritual life

  294. to spiritual barrenness.

  295. Now you'll note here in verses five and seven,

  296. we're told that this son

  297. who's going to come as the solution

  298. to both problems

  299. is going to be a Nazarite.

  300. We're not going to talk a lot this morning

  301. about what it means to be a Nazarite

  302. because we have a lot of other things to discuss,

  303. but it is going to become

  304. incredibly important next week.

  305. So just remember a couple things.

  306. If someone is a Nazarite,

  307. they are set apart to God

  308. in a special way

  309. for a time of focus and dedication.

  310. And there are three rules

  311. that they need to keep.

  312. Those are laid out here.

  313. They should not touch alcohol,

  314. can't cut their hair,

  315. can't touch dead bodies.

  316. Okay, just remember that.

  317. That's going to become incredibly important

  318. in chapter 14

  319. and chapter 15 and 16 as well.

  320. So we have this situation of barrenness.

  321. There's despair for Manoah and his wife

  322. and also for the people of Israel.

  323. God comes in in the midst of that.

  324. He intervenes.

  325. He brings life into those situations.

  326. And then we're presented

  327. with the rest of this narrative,

  328. which appears to be

  329. simply a comedy of errors.

  330. Verses 8 through 14,

  331. Manoah is not happy,

  332. it appears,

  333. that the angel appeared to the wife,

  334. but not to him.

  335. And so he starts praying to God like,

  336. hey, I want the angel to come back to us.

  337. So Manoah wants his own word.

  338. He wants to speak directly with the angel.

  339. And the angel,

  340. it says God answers his prayer,

  341. but either God or the angel or both

  342. seem to troll Manoah a little bit here.

  343. He says, I want the angel to come to us.

  344. God says, fine.

  345. He sends the angel to his wife again.

  346. Manoah is cut out.

  347. And so then she has to run to Manoah

  348. and get him.

  349. And he comes and he says,

  350. look, I want all this new information.

  351. Tell me about the mission.

  352. Tell me how we're supposed to raise the kid.

  353. And what does the angel do?

  354. He just repeats the exact same information over again.

  355. Manoah wants new things.

  356. He gets the same things all over again.

  357. He seems to maybe have missed something

  358. in his wife's communication.

  359. The only time that's happened

  360. in the history of the world.

  361. He's asked in verse 12,

  362. what is this kid's mission supposed to be?

  363. Well, we've already been told in verse five,

  364. his mission is to begin to save Israel.

  365. And so at the very best,

  366. Manoah seems to be very confused.

  367. He goes on to be afraid at the very end

  368. that they're actually going to die,

  369. that God's going to kill them

  370. because they've seen his presence.

  371. And his wife has to step in and remind him,

  372. this is verse 23,

  373. actually, honey, that doesn't make sense.

  374. If God killed us, we couldn't have the kid.

  375. Okay, so these things are not adding up here.

  376. In the midst of that,

  377. Manoah decides it's time for him

  378. to offer this young goat as an offering.

  379. And there's all kinds of debate

  380. about what is Manoah trying to do here?

  381. Is he simply offering hospitality

  382. because he's in the ancient Near East?

  383. Is he trying to exercise

  384. some sort of power play over the angels

  385. so he can get the upper hand in the situation?

  386. Whatever he is trying to do,

  387. we know this.

  388. Manoah is very confused.

  389. Manoah is unclear on what's happening.

  390. He doesn't even realize who this figure is

  391. that he's speaking to.

  392. He doesn't know that it's a representative

  393. of God himself.

  394. And so everything really that's happening

  395. in this section can be summarized.

  396. Verse 18,

  397. Manoah asks the angel for his name

  398. and the angel says,

  399. why do you ask my name

  400. seeing it is wonderful?

  401. In other words,

  402. not only do you not know what's going on,

  403. but even if I were to explain it,

  404. you would be confused.

  405. This is way out of your league, Manoah.

  406. What is happening is above your pay grade.

  407. Okay?

  408. You can ask my name,

  409. but there's no point.

  410. This is wonderful.

  411. This is more than you can wrap your head around.

  412. This is more than you are set up

  413. to comprehend and understand.

  414. And so in the midst of all of this confusion

  415. and running around and drama

  416. and comedy of errors between Manoah and his wife,

  417. underlying all of the details is this.

  418. Israel, Manoah, Manoah's wife,

  419. can thank no one but God.

  420. They are clearly not smart enough,

  421. competent enough, or good enough

  422. to deserve any of this.

  423. No, in the midst of Israel's rebellion,

  424. in the midst of her inoculation

  425. against foreign-occupied,

  426. God comes in and saves them.

  427. And so as we look at all these details

  428. and these stories, we see this.

  429. They are not smart enough or clever enough

  430. to figure things out on their own.

  431. The point of the story is not Samson.

  432. The point of the story is not Manoah.

  433. The point of the story is not the angel

  434. or Manoah's wife.

  435. The point is this.

  436. Israel may have forgotten God.

  437. God has not forgotten Israel.

  438. In the midst of rebellion and dysfunction

  439. and sin and confusion,

  440. God is still at work.

  441. Doesn't mean that there aren't consequences

  442. for what Israel's done.

  443. It doesn't mean they're not going to suffer

  444. for their rebellion and mistakes.

  445. Doesn't mean that their disobedience

  446. doesn't hurt them, right?

  447. We've seen it.

  448. We've seen the sobering effects of sin.

  449. We saw it in the story of Jethro.

  450. As we've gone through the book of Judges,

  451. we have seen the warnings are many

  452. and the consequences are real.

  453. And so I'm not saying this morning

  454. that sin doesn't matter.

  455. What I am saying is this.

  456. There is still hope.

  457. God never gives up on his people.

  458. In fact, we already sang it this morning.

  459. Because of his great love,

  460. we are not overcome.

  461. That brings us back to our question.

  462. What is our hope when it appears

  463. that the light has gone out?

  464. What is Israel's hope when she has forgotten

  465. even to cry out to God for hope and help?

  466. And our hope is simply this.

  467. God does not give up on his people.

  468. God does not give up on us.

  469. Even if it means life support,

  470. God is still there.

  471. God does not give up on us.

  472. God does not give up on us.

  473. What is our hope when it appears

  474. that the light has gone out?

  475. Our hope is that it only appears.

  476. In the midst of sin and apostasy

  477. and rebellion and confusion,

  478. the sun still rises.

  479. The sun still rises.

  480. Brothers and sisters,

  481. the same is true for us and our sin

  482. if we love and follow and trust Jesus.

  483. God still brings hope

  484. to hopeless situations.

  485. God still brings life

  486. to barren places.

  487. You might look at your own life

  488. and think about your ongoing battle against sin,

  489. things that you have said

  490. and you can't take back.

  491. People you've hurt,

  492. addictions that you've entertained

  493. and coddled.

  494. And the Bible says this,

  495. if you are still alive,

  496. the story is not over.

  497. If you are still alive,

  498. God is at work.

  499. If you're still alive,

  500. there is still hope.

  501. You might be a parent

  502. and look back

  503. at your numerous failures.

  504. And this passage reminds us

  505. that God is more powerful

  506. than your mistakes.

  507. His arm is not too short to save.

  508. Those things do not have the last word.

  509. You might look at the disappointments,

  510. perhaps betrayal,

  511. that you've experienced

  512. in your marriage

  513. and wonder if it's all over.

  514. And the truth is this,

  515. God has not abandoned you.

  516. We might look at the church broadly

  517. and around the world

  518. filled with confusion

  519. and division

  520. and disagreement

  521. and error.

  522. God is still at work

  523. redeeming a people

  524. for himself.

  525. You might look,

  526. not at the church around the world,

  527. you might look at this particular church,

  528. Cheyenne Mountain,

  529. in the midst of our preferences

  530. and disagreements

  531. and failures

  532. and mistakes.

  533. God is still using this church

  534. to bring his kingdom

  535. on earth

  536. as it is in heaven.

  537. God's grace

  538. is greater

  539. than our sin.

  540. And so we're reminded

  541. of the promise

  542. from 1 Corinthians 2,

    1 Corinthians 2:9

  543. verse 9.

  544. But as it is written,

  545. what no eye has seen,

  546. nor ear heard,

  547. nor the heart of man imagined,

  548. what God has prepared

  549. for those

  550. who love him.

  551. someone about a month ago

  552. who is not a Christian

  553. asked me this question.

  554. He said,

  555. what do you think

  556. is going to happen

  557. to our world

  558. in 10 years?

  559. And he was asking me

  560. in light of

  561. all the wild things

  562. that are happening

  563. in politics

  564. and finance,

  565. what's happening

  566. with artificial intelligence,

  567. what's happening

  568. with people being changed

  569. by their phones

  570. and technology

  571. and media.

  572. And part of his question

  573. was like,

  574. are we even going

  575. to be here

  576. in 10 years?

  577. And what I told him

  578. was this.

  579. I said,

  580. as a Christian,

  581. I believe

  582. that God

  583. holds our world

  584. together.

  585. And so I have

  586. sort of this

  587. inherent optimism

  588. that in the midst

  589. of all of these things,

  590. God has not given up

  591. on his world.

  592. And then I told him

  593. the other side

  594. of the coin,

  595. I said,

  596. it's not just

  597. that I have

  598. this great optimism,

  599. it's also this.

  600. I'm confident

  601. that if God

  602. was not holding

  603. us together,

  604. you and I

  605. would not be

  606. having this conversation

  607. because we would

  608. have already

  609. crumbled.

  610. Left to ourselves,

  611. we would have

  612. already destroyed

  613. this world.

  614. So the hope

  615. of Christians

  616. is the same hope

  617. we're reminded of

  618. in Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  619. God holds

  620. the world together

  621. by the word

  622. of his power.

  623. That we are not

  624. victims of chance

  625. and circumstance.

  626. Yes,

  627. things are bad

  628. in judges.

  629. Things are bad

  630. in this world.

  631. Hope

  632. never

  633. disappears.

  634. God

  635. never

  636. gives up

  637. on his

  638. world.

  639. God's people

  640. may forget

  641. him.

  642. God

  643. never

  644. forgets

  645. his people.

  646. Christian,

  647. God

  648. has not

  649. given up

  650. on you.

  651. That's what

  652. we're told

  653. in verse 19.

  654. Manoah

  655. offers this

  656. offering to the

  657. Lord

  658. to the one

  659. who works

  660. wonders.

  661. The one

  662. who holds

  663. the world

  664. together.

  665. the one

  666. who has

  667. not

  668. forgotten

  669. his people.

  670. The one

  671. whose eyes

  672. are still

  673. on you

  674. when you're

  675. distracted.

  676. The one

  677. whose love

  678. is for you

  679. when you're

  680. worried.

  681. The one

  682. who works

  683. wonders.

  684. Now

  685. this great

  686. hope is

  687. coming to

  688. Israel.

  689. They're

  690. oppressed

  691. by the

  692. Philan.

  693. Samson

  694. is the

  695. worst

  696. judge

  697. of all

  698. the

  699. judges.

  700. Samson

  701. is going

  702. to prove

  703. to be

  704. incredibly

  705. disappointing.

  706. Samson

  707. is ruled

  708. by his

  709. lusts

  710. and his

  711. desires.

  712. Samson

  713. is a

  714. misogynist

  715. who's also

  716. incredibly

  717. violent.

  718. He has

  719. no

  720. self-control.

  721. He seems

  722. to disregard

  723. God's call

  724. on his

  725. life and

  726. the importance

  727. of being

  728. a Nazarite.

  729. And so

  730. as we

  731. go on

  732. here,

  733. our hope

  734. is not

  735. going to

  736. be lifted

  737. up by

  738. Samson.

  739. Yes,

  740. he's going

  741. to be

  742. used by

  743. God.

  744. he is

  745. going

  746. to kill

  747. a lot

  748. of

  749. Philistines.

  750. But we're

  751. also given

  752. a hint

  753. here that

  754. Samson

  755. is not

  756. enough.

  757. Note on

  758. verse 5

  759. what we're

  760. told,

  761. he shall

  762. begin

  763. to save

  764. Israel

  765. from the

  766. hand of

  767. the Philistines.

  768. In other

  769. words,

  770. as God

  771. intervenes

  772. to save

  773. and rescue

  774. his people,

  775. this fallen

  776. and sinful

  777. man will

  778. not be

  779. enough.

  780. Yes,

  781. God has

  782. remembered

  783. Israel and

  784. they will

  785. need something

  786. and someone

  787. much greater

  788. than Samson.

  789. And so

  790. Samson reminds

  791. us once again

  792. of our need

  793. for a true

  794. and faithful

  795. king.

  796. A king who

  797. can do what

  798. no human

  799. can do,

  800. which is to

  801. change the

  802. hearts of

  803. men.

  804. Samson's

  805. birth and

  806. the angel's

  807. visit to

  808. his mother

  809. points us

  810. forward to

  811. another visit

  812. by an

  813. angel to

  814. another

  815. mother.

  816. You may

  817. be wondering

  818. why we

  819. read the

  820. Christmas story

  821. this morning

  822. from Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  823. chapter 1

  824. and that's

  825. the reason

  826. because Samson

  827. tells us

  828. there is

  829. something more

  830. that we

  831. need.

  832. We're told

  833. in verse 5

  834. here he's

  835. going to

  836. begin to

  837. save Israel.

  838. If you go

  839. back on

  840. verse 3

  841. of your

  842. worship guide,

  843. what are we

  844. told about

  845. our Lord

  846. Jesus?

  847. verse 21,

  848. he is not

  849. going to

  850. begin.

  851. She will

  852. bear a

  853. son and

  854. you shall

  855. call his

  856. name Jesus

  857. for he

  858. will save

  859. his people

  860. from their

  861. sins.

  862. Israel

  863. needs

  864. something and

  865. someone greater

  866. than Samson.

  867. They will

  868. not have it

  869. until this

  870. son is

  871. born.

  872. Jesus will

  873. not begin

  874. to save

  875. them.

  876. He will

  877. save them.

  878. He will

  879. not just

  880. start.

  881. He will

  882. also

  883. finish.

  884. That's our

  885. hope as

  886. Christians.

  887. Our hope is

  888. not in

  889. Samson.

  890. Our hope is

  891. in the one

  892. who truly

  893. and really

  894. does hold

  895. the world

  896. together.

  897. What is

  898. our hope

  899. when it

  900. appears that

  901. the lights

  902. have gone

  903. out?

  904. Our hope

  905. is what the

  906. children's

  907. storybook

  908. Bible reminds

  909. us of,

  910. of God's

  911. never stopping,

  912. never giving

  913. up,

  914. unbreaking,

  915. always and

  916. forever love.

  917. Our hope

  918. is what we're

  919. reminded of

  920. Timothy 2

  921. verse 15.

  922. If we

  923. are faithless,

  924. he remains

  925. faithful,

  926. for he

  927. cannot deny

  928. himself.

  929. Let's

  930. pray.

  931. Our

  932. Father in

  933. heaven,

  934. we do

  935. praise you

  936. and thank

  937. you that

  938. we don't

  939. rely on

  940. earthly leaders

  941. and rulers.

  942. That as

  943. they always

  944. disappoint and

  945. fall short,

  946. as they

  947. always only

  948. begin to

  949. save,

  950. we have

  951. great hope

  952. in your

  953. son and

  954. our savior,

  955. our Lord

  956. Jesus,

  957. who doesn't

  958. just begin,

  959. he also

  960. finishes.

  961. We ask

  962. that you

  963. would remind

  964. us of that,

  965. that it

  966. would grow

  967. our hope

  968. and our

  969. faith and

  970. our confidence

  971. in you,

  972. that we

  973. would follow

  974. you with

  975. joy no

  976. matter how

  977. dark our

  978. world seems.

  979. We ask

  980. these things

  981. in the mighty

  982. name of

  983. Jesus Christ.

  984. Amen.
