  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  3. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad that you're here.

  6. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one's so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  11. This week we are resuming our series in the book of Judges.

  12. And you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  13. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  14. It's about the need for a true and faithful king,

  15. a king who can do what no human can do,

  16. which is to change the hearts of men.

  17. It's about the power of spirit-filled leadership.

  18. And it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people, people like you and me.

  19. Last time we were in Judges chapter 13 and we began the story of Samson.

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  20. And you'll remember that we asked this question of,

  21. what is our hope when it appears that the lights have gone out?

  22. And we saw that our hope is that God does not give up on us.

  23. Israel may have forgotten God.

  24. God has not forgotten Israel.

  25. It's with that that we continue into chapter 14.

  26. And you'll remember, if you've been with us,

  27. that there's this pattern that was set out at the very beginning of the book of Judges

  28. that we're going to go from best to worst.

  29. And so we had Othniel, who was our greatest judge of all time,

  30. the model judge, the perfect judge.

  31. Now we come to the last judge, Samson, who is, without a doubt, the worst judge.

  32. And so, as we come to this passage, we're simply wondering this,

  33. how is God going to work through this crazy leader?

  34. How is God going to work through the dysfunction and anger and lust and disrespect of Samson?

  35. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me to God's word.

  36. As we turn, you can go in your Bible.

  37. You can turn in your worship guide.

  38. You can turn on your phone.

  39. No matter what you do, remember that this is God's word.

  40. Proverbs chapter 30 tells us,

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  41. And so it's for that reason that we read now, Judges chapter 14, starting at verse 1.

    Judges 14 chapter mention

  42. Samson went down to Timnah, and at Timnah he saw one of the daughters of the Philistines.

  43. Then he came up and told his father and mother,

  44. I saw one of the daughters of the Philistines at Timnah.

  45. Now, get her for me as my wife.

  46. But his father and mother said to him,

  47. Is there not a woman among the daughters of your relatives or among all our people

  48. that you must go to take a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?

  49. But Samson said to his father,

  50. Get her for me, for she is right in my eyes.

  51. Verse 4.

  52. His father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord,

  53. for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines.

  54. At that time the Philistines ruled over Israel.

  55. Then Samson went down with his father and mother to Timnah,

  56. and they came to the vineyards of Timnah.

  57. And behold, a young lion came toward him roaring.

  58. Then the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him,

  59. and although he had nothing in his hand,

  60. he tore the lion in pieces as one tears a young goat.

  61. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.

  62. Then he went down and talked with the woman,

  63. and she was right in Samson's eyes.

  64. Verse 8.

  65. Verse 10.

  66. His father went down to the woman,

  67. and Samson prepared a feast there,

  68. for so the young men used to do.

  69. As soon as the people saw him,

  70. they brought thirty companions to be with him.

  71. And Samson said to them,

  72. Let me now put a riddle to you.

  73. If you can tell me what it is,

  74. within the seven days of the feast,

  75. and find it out,

  76. then I will give you thirty linen garments

  77. and thirty changes of clothes.

  78. But if you cannot tell me what it is,

  79. then you shall give me thirty linen garments

  80. and thirty changes of clothes.

  81. And they said to him,

  82. Put your riddle, that we may hear it.

  83. Verse 14.

  84. And he said to them,

  85. Out of the eater came something to eat,

  86. out of the strong came something sweet.

  87. And in three days they could not solve the riddle.

  88. On the fourth day they said to Samson's wife,

  89. Entice your husband to tell us what the riddle is,

  90. lest we burn you and your father's house with fire.

  91. Have you invited us here to impoverish us?

  92. And Samson's wife wept over him and said,

  93. You only hate me, you do not love me.

  94. You have put a riddle to my people,

  95. and you have not told me what it is.

  96. And he said to her,

  97. Behold, I have not told my father nor my mother,

  98. and shall I tell you?

  99. She wept before him the seven days

  100. that their feast lasted.

  101. And on the seventh day he told her,

  102. because she pressed him hard.

  103. Then she told the riddle to her people.

  104. And the men of the city said to him on the seventh day,

  105. before the sun went down,

  106. What is sweeter than honey?

  107. What is stronger than a lion?

  108. And he said to them,

  109. If you had not plowed with my heifer,

  110. you would not have found out my riddle.

  111. Verse 19.

  112. And the spirit of the Lord rushed upon him,

  113. and he went down to Ashkelon,

  114. and struck down thirty men of the town,

  115. and took their spoil,

  116. and gave the garments to those who had told the riddle.

  117. In hot anger he went back to his father's house.

  118. And Samson's wife was given to his companion,

  119. who had been his best man.

  120. I invite you to pray with me

  121. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  122. Our Father in heaven,

  123. we do thank you again

  124. that you have given us your word

  125. to instruct us,

  126. to help us,

  127. to guide us.

  128. And we thank you that you

  129. use imperfect, flawed, sinful people

  130. in your kingdom,

  131. people like Samson.

  132. We ask that you would use

  133. this chapter this morning

  134. to show us our great need

  135. for your grace and your mercy.

  136. You'd comfort us

  137. with that very same grace and mercy

  138. that you would lead us to know

  139. and love our Lord Jesus more and more.

  140. It's in his name

  141. that we ask all of these things.

  142. Amen.

  143. If we had just Judges chapter 13

    Judges 13 chapter mention

  144. to go on,

  145. if that's all we knew

  146. about the story of Samson,

  147. we would be only excited at this point.

  148. We talked last week

  149. about how God has this great mercy

  150. for his people

  151. despite the fact

  152. that they have forgotten him.

  153. They don't even cry out to him for help

  154. and yet God still shows up to rescue.

  155. He's raising up this redeemer,

  156. this man who's going to save Israel

  157. from the Philistines.

  158. And he has even a more complicated

  159. birth story and calling story

  160. than any other judge that we've seen.

  161. Even more than that,

  162. you may remember

  163. as we left chapter 13,

  164. we were told this very last verse,

  165. the spirit of the Lord

  166. began to stir him,

  167. that is Samson.

  168. And so just knowing that,

  169. we would think,

  170. wow, God is going to do

  171. the pattern that he's done before.

  172. Samson has been raised up.

  173. What should we expect

  174. but that he's going to go out

  175. and have a great victory?

  176. Chapter 14,

  177. we should see Samson.

  178. He's going to go.

  179. He's going to trash the Philistines.

  180. Everyone's going to rejoice.

  181. Things are going to continue

  182. very well in the nation of Israel.

  183. And so it should be,

  184. in a sense,

  185. a surprise to us

  186. as we begin chapter 14

  187. because it is a disappointing

  188. montage of failure.

  189. Samson does stupid thing

  190. after stupid thing.

  191. Verses 2 and 3,

  192. Samson is disrespectful

  193. of his parents.

  194. He orders them around.

  195. He says,

  196. look,

  197. this woman is right in my eyes.

  198. And he says twice,

  199. get her for me.

  200. His parents try to dissuade him,

  201. try to ask him,

  202. hey, isn't there someone

  203. among our own people,

  204. someone who loves God

  205. that you could go with?

  206. And Samson doesn't even

  207. listen to them.

  208. He just tells them,

  209. this is what I want.

  210. This is what you're going to do.

  211. And so he has this disregard

  212. for his parents' concern

  213. and advice.

  214. Even more than that,

  215. Samson has no regard

  216. for God's law.

  217. If you were with us

  218. back in 2019

  219. when we were in the book

  220. of Nehemiah,

  221. as we got to the very end,

  222. remember one of Nehemiah's reforms

  223. was to break up

  224. these interfaith marriages

  225. where God's people

  226. had married with pagans

  227. who were pulling them away

  228. from worship

  229. of the one true God.

  230. And so Samson's parents,

  231. rightly or wrongly,

  232. like many parents,

  233. decide to pick their battles

  234. and they head down

  235. with Samson

  236. for this unfortunate marriage.

  237. And let's not miss

  238. what Samson is doing here.

  239. It's not simply

  240. or merely

  241. that Samson is marrying

  242. someone who does not love

  243. the one true God.

  244. Samson is marrying

  245. into the Philistines.

  246. He should instead

  247. be fighting

  248. the Philistines.

  249. He's doing the very opposite

  250. of what God

  251. has called him to do.

  252. He is making friends

  253. with God's enemies.

  254. If that were not enough,

  255. Samson then goes on

  256. to violate himself

  257. and his parents.

  258. In verses 6-9,

  259. we see that this lion comes.

  260. The Spirit of the Lord

  261. comes upon Samson.

  262. He's able to rip

  263. this lion apart.

  264. So far, so good.

  265. He comes back

  266. to the lion, though,

  267. and he finds

  268. this beehive is there.

  269. He finds there's actually

  270. honey he can get.

  271. Now, remember I told you

  272. last week the fact

  273. that Samson is a Nazarite

  274. is going to become

  275. very important this week.

  276. Nazarites are set apart

  277. to God with a special focus

  278. and devotion to him,

  279. and there's three things

  280. they're not supposed to do.

  281. They're not supposed

  282. to touch dead bodies.

  283. They're not supposed

  284. to cut their hair.

  285. They're not supposed

  286. to touch alcohol.

  287. Where is the honey?

  288. It's inside a dead body.

  289. And it's not really

  290. just Nazarites

  291. who aren't supposed

  292. to touch dead bodies.

  293. It's all of God's people

  294. are made ceremonially

  295. unclean by this.

  296. To make things worse,

  297. it's not just that

  298. Samson touches this honey.

  299. He takes it

  300. and brings it

  301. to his parents,

  302. and verse 9

  303. tells us how bad it is.

  304. He did not tell them

  305. that he had scraped

  306. the honey

  307. from the carcass

  308. of a lion.

  309. This would be similar

  310. to you today

  311. going to the bathroom,

  312. not washing your hands

  313. at all,

  314. and then coming back

  315. to prepare food

  316. for everyone.

  317. Okay, we are being told

  318. this.

  319. Samson is nasty.

  320. Okay?

  321. Samson is gross.

  322. He touches dead bodies.

  323. He then gives

  324. dead body honey

  325. to other people,

  326. doesn't tell them

  327. what it is

  328. they're touching

  329. and they're eating.

  330. Remember,

  331. he's a Nazarite.

  332. No dead bodies,

  333. no cutting hair,

  334. no alcohol.

  335. What does he do next?

  336. Well, he goes

  337. and he throws

  338. this party.

  339. Verses 10.

  340. Verse 10 and 11.

  341. Samson prepared

  342. a feast there

  343. for so the young men

  344. used to do.

  345. What do the young men

  346. do when they

  347. throw a party?

  348. They're not drinking

  349. ginger ale.

  350. Okay?

  351. Samson continues

  352. to disregard

  353. God's call

  354. on his life.

  355. In fact,

  356. he sums it up

  357. in both verse 3

  358. and verse 7

  359. when we're told

  360. about his feelings

  361. toward this woman,

  362. we're given this phrase,

  363. she was right

  364. in his eyes.

  365. Now,

  366. for a long time,

  367. I used to think

  368. that this statement

  369. was about

  370. Samson's physical

  371. attraction to this woman

  372. and at some level

  373. that's probably true,

  374. but this phrase,

  375. right in their eyes,

  376. is going to show up

  377. later in the book

  378. of Judges,

  379. not about romantic

  380. relationships,

  381. but about people

  382. doing whatever

  383. they want.

  384. In other words,

  385. Samson likes her,

  386. and nothing

  387. else matters.

  388. Samson is interested

  389. in this woman.

  390. He could not

  391. care less

  392. what his parents

  393. think,

  394. what God

  395. thinks.

  396. Samson does

  397. what Samson wants.

  398. For whatever reason,

  399. this woman

  400. melts

  401. Samson's butter.

  402. Okay?

  403. Nothing else

  404. matters.

  405. And so we're

  406. seeing a theme here.

  407. We have not

  408. seen it once,

  409. twice,

  410. but three times.

  411. Samson does

  412. almost everything

  413. wrong.

  414. Samson is supposed

  415. to be set apart

  416. to God as a Nazarite.

  417. He's supposed

  418. to be called

  419. to this higher level

  420. of obedience

  421. and focus.

  422. He can't even

  423. get the basics

  424. right.

  425. Not marrying

  426. a Philistine,

  427. that's not some

  428. special rule

  429. for Nazarites.

  430. No,

  431. no Israelite

  432. is supposed

  433. to do that.

  434. Yes,

  435. Nazarites are

  436. not supposed

  437. to touch

  438. dead bodies.

  439. No Israelite

  440. is supposed

  441. to touch

  442. a dead body.

  443. Samson

  444. should be

  445. taking

  446. senior level

  447. classes.

  448. Samson

  449. can't even

  450. make it

  451. through Israelite

  452. 101.

  453. Samson

  454. is

  455. the worst

  456. judge.

  457. So the author

  458. of Judges

  459. is telling us

  460. over and over

  461. to make sure

  462. we don't

  463. miss it.

  464. Look,

  465. Samson

  466. is a trash

  467. fire.

  468. Samson's

  469. life is

  470. a complete

  471. train wreck.

  472. This

  473. is the man

  474. who God

  475. is going

  476. to use

  477. to save

  478. his people

  479. from the

  480. Philistines.

  481. A man

  482. who disregards

  483. his parents.

  484. A man

  485. who disregards

  486. God

  487. himself.

  488. So what

  489. do we do?

  490. with this

  491. terrible

  492. no-good

  493. judge.

  494. Now the

  495. key

  496. to chapter

  497. 14

  498. is

  499. in verse

  500. 4.

  501. Samson's

  502. parents

  503. are

  504. beside

  505. themselves

  506. that Samson's

  507. making these

  508. choices that

  509. he's marrying

  510. the wrong

  511. person.

  512. But what

  513. they don't

  514. know is

  515. what we're

  516. told here.

  517. It was

  518. from

  519. the Lord.

  520. for he

  521. was seeking

  522. an opportunity

  523. against the

  524. Philistines.

  525. In other

  526. words,

  527. Samson

  528. is a

  529. mess.

  530. God

  531. is still

  532. at work.

  533. In the

  534. midst of

  535. Samson's

  536. flaws

  537. and failure,

  538. God is

  539. still

  540. bringing

  541. deliverance.

  542. God is

  543. working out

  544. his purposes

  545. no matter

  546. what.

  547. In fact,

  548. this is a

  549. theme we've

  550. seen in

  551. other parts

  552. of Scripture.

  553. You may

  554. remember at

  555. the very

  556. end of

  557. the book

  558. of Genesis

  559. in the

  560. Joseph story,

  561. Joseph is

  562. sold by his

  563. brothers because

  564. of their

  565. jealousy,

  566. cast him

  567. into a pit,

  568. then they sell

  569. him into

  570. slavery.

  571. God uses

  572. their jealousy

  573. to save

  574. his people

  575. from famine.

  576. And you'll

  577. remember,

  578. Joseph gives

  579. this memorable

  580. line at the

  581. very end of

  582. the book.

  583. He tells

  584. his brothers,

  585. as for

  586. you,

  587. you meant

  588. evil against

  589. me,

  590. but God

  591. meant it

  592. for good

  593. to bring

  594. it about

  595. that many

  596. people should

  597. be kept

  598. alive as

  599. they are

  600. today.

  601. The point

  602. is this.

  603. God is

  604. gracious,

  605. and in

  606. his

  607. graciousness,

  608. he works

  609. through sinful,

  610. flawed,

  611. foolish,

  612. arrogant,

  613. imperfect

  614. people.

  615. God uses

  616. foolish,

  617. selfish,

  618. sinful men

  619. and women

  620. to accomplish

  621. his will.

  622. God

  623. will

  624. accomplish

  625. his

  626. purposes.

  627. God

  628. will

  629. accomplish

  630. his purposes.

  631. The will

  632. of the

  633. Lord

  634. will

  635. prevail.

  636. God

  637. uses

  638. parents who

  639. are still

  640. wrestling with

  641. their own

  642. demons

  643. to teach

  644. their

  645. children

  646. and their

  647. grandchildren

  648. about God's

  649. love.

  650. God uses

  651. narcissists

  652. with strong

  653. personalities

  654. to get

  655. organizations

  656. off the

  657. ground.

  658. God uses

  659. self-centered

  660. friends

  661. who often

  662. lose the

  663. plot

  664. to care

  665. for us,

  666. to comfort

  667. us,

  668. to serve

  669. us.

  670. God

  671. uses

  672. leaders

  673. with

  674. overwhelming

  675. pride

  676. and ego

  677. to take

  678. courageous

  679. stands

  680. for

  681. unpopular

  682. truths.

  683. God

  684. uses

  685. people

  686. who are

  687. anxious

  688. and

  689. fearful

  690. to speak

  691. words of

  692. comfort and

  693. healing

  694. to his

  695. people.

  696. God

  697. uses the

  698. persecution

  699. of the

  700. church

  701. to

  702. scatter

  703. his

  704. people

  705. and

  706. spread

  707. the

  708. gospel.

  709. Now,

  710. don't hear

  711. what I'm

  712. not saying.

  713. I am

  714. not saying

  715. sin does

  716. not matter.

  717. And I

  718. am not

  719. saying

  720. that our

  721. sin

  722. does not

  723. have

  724. consequences.

  725. Gideon's

  726. sin is

  727. going to

  728. catch up

  729. with him

  730. in a

  731. big way.

  732. In two

  733. chapters,

  734. chapter 16,

  735. the rant

  736. is going

  737. to come

  738. to.

  739. Samson

  740. is going

  741. to have

  742. to pay

  743. the price

  744. for his

  745. foolishness.

  746. So I'm

  747. not saying

  748. sin doesn't

  749. matter.

  750. I'm not

  751. saying we

  752. brush away

  753. those

  754. things.

  755. What I

  756. am saying

  757. is this.

  758. God

  759. is gracious.

  760. God

  761. in his

  762. grace

  763. chooses

  764. to work

  765. through

  766. imperfect

  767. people.

  768. In fact,

  769. that's the

  770. only kind

  771. of people

  772. there are.

  773. God

  774. in his

  775. grace

  776. accomplishes

  777. his work

  778. through

  779. Samson.

  780. God

  781. in his

  782. grace

  783. accomplishes

  784. his work

  785. through

  786. you

  787. and me.

  788. You'll

  789. see this

  790. on page

  791. seven of

  792. your worship

  793. guide,

  794. a quote

  795. from Martin

  796. Luther.

  797. God

  798. uses

  799. crooked

  800. sticks

  801. to draw

  802. straight

  803. lines.

  804. Christian,

  805. you are,

  806. I am,

  807. we are

  808. crooked

  809. sticks.

  810. And God's

  811. line will

  812. always be

  813. straight.

  814. God

  815. uses you

  816. and me

  817. and us

  818. in the

  819. midst of

  820. our stupidity,

  821. our mistakes,

  822. our failure,

  823. our sin.

  824. none of

  825. them

  826. stop

  827. the

  828. advance

  829. of his

  830. kingdom.

  831. They don't

  832. stop Samson

  833. from being

  834. used by

  835. God.

  836. They don't

  837. stop us

  838. either.

  839. God

  840. will

  841. be

  842. God

  843. to be

  844. God.

  845. God

  846. is

  847. using us

  848. when God

  849. uses us,

  850. it does

  851. not mean

  852. that he

  853. approves

  854. of everything

  855. in our

  856. lives.

  857. It does

  858. not mean

  859. that we

  860. have it

  861. all figured

  862. out.

  863. it does

  864. not mean

  865. when we

  866. see great

  867. fruit and

  868. success

  869. in our

  870. efforts

  871. that we

  872. pat ourselves

  873. on the

  874. back.

  875. It does

  876. mean that

  877. God is a

  878. God of

  879. mercy.

  880. It does

  881. mean that

  882. God is a

  883. God who

  884. keeps his

  885. promises.

  886. It does

  887. mean that

  888. God is a

  889. God who

  890. is faithful.

  891. So there's

  892. a sobering

  893. truth.

  894. It gives

  895. us great

  896. humility as

  897. we follow

  898. Jesus

  899. together.

  900. There's

  901. also an

  902. encouraging

  903. truth.

  904. God

  905. can and

  906. God will

  907. use us

  908. for his

  909. glory despite

  910. our sin

  911. and rebellion

  912. and confusion.

  913. Not

  914. because we

  915. are great,

  916. but because

  917. God is

  918. great.

  919. God will

  920. always

  921. accomplish

  922. his

  923. purposes.

  924. I told

  925. you a

  926. minute ago

  927. that verse

  928. 4 was our

  929. key to this

  930. chapter.

  931. And verse

  932. 4 tells us

  933. it was from

  934. the Lord.

  935. What is it

  936. that's from

  937. the Lord?

  938. Also tells us

  939. he's seeking

  940. an opportunity

  941. against the

  942. Philistines.

  943. Remember,

  944. when the

  945. angel of the

  946. Lord comes

  947. to Manoah's

  948. wife,

  949. the angel

  950. says,

  951. look,

  952. Samson is

  953. going to

  954. begin to

  955. save Israel.

  956. And what

  957. is it that

  958. happens in

  959. this chapter?

  960. Samson begins

  961. to save

  962. Israel.

  963. And he

  964. begins to

  965. save Israel

  966. by taking

  967. some Philistines

  968. to task.

  969. In verses

  970. 12-8,

  971. he sets out

  972. this impossible

  973. riddle.

  974. This riddle

  975. that makes

  976. sense to

  977. him because

  978. he's experienced

  979. it, right?

  980. He knows

  981. about the

  982. lion.

  983. Not a

  984. riddle that

  985. makes sense

  986. to anyone

  987. else.

  988. So Samson,

  989. he's not

  990. fair to

  991. the Philistines.

  992. The Philistines

  993. decide all is

  994. fair in love

  995. and war.

  996. They're not

  997. fair to

  998. Samson.

  999. And so we

  1000. see in

  1001. verse 15,

  1002. they go and

  1003. threaten his

  1004. wife.

  1005. Clearly his

  1006. wife is not

  1007. aware of

  1008. Samson's

  1009. powers.

  1010. If she

  1011. were, she

  1012. would have

  1013. just filled

  1014. him in.

  1015. Hey, there's

  1016. some Philistines

  1017. they've

  1018. threatened to

  1019. burn down

  1020. my parents'

  1021. house.

  1022. Can you go

  1023. rip them

  1024. apart?

  1025. Instead, she

  1026. spends days

  1027. crying, right?

  1028. Not knowing

  1029. how it is

  1030. that she

  1031. can convince

  1032. Samson.

  1033. And finally,

  1034. verses 17

  1035. and 18,

  1036. he tells

  1037. her.

  1038. She tells

  1039. them, and

  1040. there's some

  1041. foreshadowing

  1042. here, wait

  1043. for chapter

  1044. 16, the

  1045. same play

  1046. is going to

  1047. get run on

  1048. Samson again.

  1049. Samson has

  1050. a weakness,

  1051. that weakness

  1052. is women.

  1053. And what

  1054. does God

  1055. do?

  1056. He

  1057. accomplishes

  1058. his purposes.

  1059. Verse 19,

  1060. And the

  1061. spirit of the

  1062. Lord rushed

  1063. upon him,

  1064. and he

  1065. went down

  1066. to Ashkelon,

  1067. and struck

  1068. down thirty

  1069. men of the

  1070. town, and

  1071. took their

  1072. spoil, and

  1073. gave the

  1074. garments to

  1075. those who

  1076. had told

  1077. the riddle.

  1078. In hot

  1079. anger, he

  1080. went back

  1081. to his

  1082. father's

  1083. house.

  1084. Samson

  1085. wrecks

  1086. some

  1087. Philistines.

  1088. God

  1089. creates

  1090. tension

  1091. between

  1092. his people

  1093. and the

  1094. Philistines

  1095. when his

  1096. people are

  1097. complacent

  1098. under

  1099. oppression.

  1100. God

  1101. accomplishes

  1102. his purposes.

  1103. God

  1104. uses

  1105. Samson

  1106. to reach

  1107. end state.

  1108. Samson's

  1109. sin

  1110. and lust

  1111. and selfishness

  1112. are not

  1113. great enough

  1114. to stand

  1115. in God's

  1116. way.

  1117. Christian,

  1118. your lust

  1119. and sin

  1120. and selfishness

  1121. are not

  1122. great enough

  1123. to stand

  1124. in God's

  1125. way.

  1126. That is

  1127. how great

  1128. our God

  1129. is.

  1130. It's not

  1131. just that God

  1132. uses sinful

  1133. men and

  1134. women,

  1135. though.

  1136. We also see

  1137. here God

  1138. beats the

  1139. devil at

  1140. his own

  1141. game.

  1142. Satan loves

  1143. to promote

  1144. sin.

  1145. Satan is

  1146. thrilled

  1147. that Samson

  1148. has all

  1149. of these

  1150. character

  1151. flaws.

  1152. Satan is

  1153. delighted

  1154. that Samson

  1155. has an

  1156. anger

  1157. problem.

  1158. He loves

  1159. that Samson

  1160. is weak

  1161. around women.

  1162. God says

  1163. whatever evil

  1164. you promote,

  1165. I will

  1166. use it

  1167. for my

  1168. purposes.

  1169. I will

  1170. turn

  1171. evil

  1172. to good.

  1173. Remember

  1174. again,

  1175. Genesis 50,

  1176. as for you,

  1177. you meant

  1178. evil against

  1179. me,

  1180. but God

  1181. meant it

  1182. for good.

  1183. You'll see

  1184. this on page

  1185. nine of your

  1186. worship guide.

  1187. William Gurnall

  1188. tells us,

  1189. God lays

  1190. as it were

  1191. his own

  1192. plans under

  1193. Satan's

  1194. wings and

  1195. makes him

  1196. hatch them.

  1197. The Philistines

  1198. are going to

  1199. be defeated

  1200. no matter

  1201. what.

  1202. Some of you

  1203. may be

  1204. familiar with

  1205. the card

  1206. game Uno.

  1207. In that game,

  1208. you know you

  1209. can move

  1210. either clockwise

  1211. or counterclockwise,

  1212. and it's

  1213. become a

  1214. popular meme

  1215. in recent

  1216. years,

  1217. the power

  1218. of the

  1219. reverse Uno

  1220. card.

  1221. Someone's

  1222. coming up

  1223. against you

  1224. with an

  1225. attack.

  1226. All you

  1227. need to

  1228. do is

  1229. have the

  1230. most special

  1231. card in

  1232. the entire

  1233. deck,

  1234. the reverse

  1235. card,

  1236. and you

  1237. throw it

  1238. down,

  1239. and suddenly

  1240. the direction

  1241. of play

  1242. changes.

  1243. So if

  1244. moves were

  1245. moving

  1246. clockwise,

  1247. you throw

  1248. down your

  1249. reverse Uno

  1250. card,

  1251. things go

  1252. counterclockwise.

  1253. Going

  1254. counterclockwise,

  1255. you throw

  1256. your reverse

  1257. card down,

  1258. they go

  1259. clockwise.

  1260. It's become

  1261. this meme

  1262. of reversing

  1263. the direction,

  1264. using someone's

  1265. momentum

  1266. against them.

  1267. There's a

  1268. picture you

  1269. can find on

  1270. the internet

  1271. of a

  1272. referee

  1273. calling out

  1274. a soccer

  1275. player with

  1276. his card,

  1277. and the

  1278. soccer player

  1279. has the

  1280. reverse Uno

  1281. card in

  1282. his hand.

  1283. And so

  1284. he's saying,

  1285. no,

  1286. ref,

  1287. the call

  1288. is on

  1289. you,

  1290. not me.

  1291. God

  1292. constantly

  1293. plays reverse

  1294. Uno on

  1295. the devil.

  1296. God uses

  1297. Satan's

  1298. momentum

  1299. against him.

  1300. God takes

  1301. the evil

  1302. and sin

  1303. in this

  1304. world,

  1305. and he

  1306. takes the

  1307. evil and

  1308. the sin

  1309. of his

  1310. people.

  1311. He uses

  1312. it to

  1313. accomplish

  1314. his will.

  1315. No matter

  1316. how tricky

  1317. and strategic

  1318. and tactical

  1319. Satan is,

  1320. he always

  1321. ends up

  1322. flat on

  1323. his face.

  1324. It's

  1325. ironic as

  1326. we move

  1327. through the

  1328. book of

  1329. Judges,

  1330. as things

  1331. get worse

  1332. in Israel,

  1333. the encouragement

  1334. actually increases.

  1335. You may

  1336. remember as

  1337. we were in

  1338. the early

  1339. Judges,

  1340. we would

  1341. talk about,

  1342. hey,

  1343. this is the

  1344. sin that

  1345. Israel is

  1346. falling into.

  1347. We want

  1348. to avoid

  1349. that sin

  1350. and move

  1351. towards

  1352. righteousness,

  1353. right?

  1354. This chapter

  1355. we've kind

  1356. of given

  1357. up on

  1358. that.

  1359. There's

  1360. too many

  1361. sins

  1362. going on

  1363. here for

  1364. Samson.

  1365. He's

  1366. doing

  1367. everything

  1368. wrong.

  1369. And so

  1370. more and

  1371. more,

  1372. the sounding

  1373. note is

  1374. this,

  1375. as bad

  1376. as things

  1377. get for

  1378. God's

  1379. people,

  1380. God's

  1381. mercy is

  1382. greater.

  1383. As much

  1384. as God's

  1385. people mess

  1386. it up,

  1387. God's

  1388. power is

  1389. more.

  1390. No matter

  1391. how much

  1392. you believe

  1393. that you

  1394. have messed

  1395. it up,

  1396. God is

  1397. still in

  1398. control.

  1399. Even if

  1400. you think

  1401. the future

  1402. is gone,

  1403. God is

  1404. still

  1405. writing it.

  1406. God's

  1407. grace

  1408. is more

  1409. and more.

  1410. The more

  1411. Israel

  1412. fails,

  1413. the more

  1414. gracious

  1415. God

  1416. is.

  1417. It is

  1418. one thing

  1419. in the

  1420. beginning

  1421. and middle

  1422. of Judges

  1423. to see

  1424. God's grace

  1425. to sinful

  1426. people.

  1427. It is

  1428. another

  1429. thing

  1430. to see

  1431. God's grace

  1432. to really

  1433. sinful

  1434. people.

  1435. God's

  1436. grace

  1437. in the

  1438. life of

  1439. Samson

  1440. is

  1441. shocking.

  1442. Christian,

  1443. God's

  1444. grace in

  1445. your life

  1446. is shocking

  1447. as well.

  1448. And it's

  1449. shocking

  1450. because of

  1451. his mercy

  1452. and his

  1453. love

  1454. and his

  1455. forgiveness.

  1456. forgiveness.

  1457. It's pretty

  1458. clear what I

  1459. hinted at last

  1460. week, which is

  1461. that Samson is

  1462. not going to

  1463. cut it.

  1464. Israel

  1465. ultimately is

  1466. going to need

  1467. a better

  1468. and greater

  1469. king.

  1470. We've already

  1471. seen some of

  1472. Samson's

  1473. failures.

  1474. Things are

  1475. going to get

  1476. worse next

  1477. week and

  1478. even worse

  1479. the week

  1480. after.

  1481. Samson is

  1482. going to,

  1483. at the end,

  1484. because of

  1485. God's mercy,

  1486. pull a

  1487. success

  1488. from the

  1489. jaws of

  1490. defeat.

  1491. Which brings

  1492. us back to

  1493. the beginning,

  1494. the middle of

  1495. this chapter.

  1496. You may

  1497. have found

  1498. it strange

  1499. that a

  1500. beehive

  1501. shows up

  1502. in a

  1503. lion's

  1504. carcass.

  1505. At least

  1506. I hope you

  1507. found it

  1508. strange.

  1509. When I

  1510. go to

  1511. Costco,

  1512. there is

  1513. no lion's

  1514. carcass

  1515. honey.

  1516. Right?

  1517. Because those

  1518. things don't

  1519. happen.

  1520. Honey does

  1521. not come out

  1522. of dead

  1523. corpses.

  1524. One commentator

  1525. puts it this

  1526. way,

  1527. Bees do

  1528. not normally

  1529. inhabit

  1530. cadavers,

  1531. flies and

  1532. maggots do.

  1533. God is

  1534. bringing

  1535. something sweet

  1536. and gracious

  1537. out of the

  1538. corpse of

  1539. his people.

  1540. God is

  1541. taking what

  1542. should be

  1543. rotting and

  1544. decaying

  1545. and turning

  1546. it into

  1547. something

  1548. life-giving.

  1549. God shows

  1550. up to his

  1551. people who

  1552. have forgotten

  1553. and abandoned

  1554. him and he

  1555. brings them

  1556. deliverance.

  1557. Which points

  1558. us forward to

  1559. an even

  1560. greater and

  1561. sweeter

  1562. deliverance.

  1563. God comes

  1564. to his

  1565. people who

  1566. rebel against

  1567. him and

  1568. he sends

  1569. his one

  1570. and only

  1571. son to

  1572. bring

  1573. something

  1574. sweet.

  1575. God shows

  1576. up to a

  1577. world that

  1578. hates him

  1579. and he

  1580. sacrifices

  1581. his one

  1582. and only

  1583. son so

  1584. that he

  1585. can love

  1586. them.

  1587. Samson

  1588. begins to

  1589. save Israel

  1590. from the

  1591. Philistines.

  1592. God saves

  1593. his people

  1594. once and

  1595. for all.

  1596. And so

  1597. as we

  1598. reach past

  1599. the halfway

  1600. point in

  1601. Judges, we

  1602. see God's

  1603. grace dripping

  1604. more and

  1605. more.

  1606. We see

  1607. God's grace

  1608. growing larger

  1609. and larger

  1610. because sweetness

  1611. comes from

  1612. death, not

  1613. only in this

  1614. lion, but

  1615. in our

  1616. Lord Jesus.

  1617. That Jesus

  1618. comes and

  1619. he lives the

  1620. perfect life

  1621. that we

  1622. should have

  1623. lived.

  1624. He dies the

  1625. death that

  1626. we deserve

  1627. to die.

  1628. He brings

  1629. life where

  1630. there should

  1631. be death.

  1632. As one

  1633. man has

  1634. put it, he

  1635. uses an

  1636. instrument of

  1637. torture as

  1638. an instrument

  1639. of salvation.

  1640. He takes

  1641. people who

  1642. hate him.

  1643. He sends

  1644. his son to

  1645. love them.

  1646. Christian,

  1647. that's the

  1648. good news

  1649. for this

  1650. world.

  1651. That's the

  1652. good news

  1653. for you.

  1654. God uses

  1655. imperfect,

  1656. sinful,

  1657. failing,

  1658. stupid people

  1659. to accomplish

  1660. his purposes.

  1661. Those are

  1662. the only

  1663. people there

  1664. are.

  1665. Grace,

  1666. grace,

  1667. God's grace,

  1668. grace that

  1669. is greater

  1670. than all

  1671. our sin.

  1672. Let's pray.

  1673. Our Father

  1674. in heaven,

  1675. we do

  1676. praise you

  1677. and thank

  1678. you that

  1679. your grace

  1680. is so

  1681. great it

  1682. is shocking.

  1683. We thank

  1684. you for

  1685. your grace

  1686. in Samson's

  1687. life,

  1688. your faithfulness

  1689. to your

  1690. people.

  1691. We thank

  1692. you for

  1693. your faithfulness

  1694. to us

  1695. in our

  1696. lives.

  1697. We ask

  1698. that you

  1699. would remind

  1700. us of it,

  1701. that we

  1702. would know

  1703. that the

  1704. future isn't

  1705. gone because

  1706. you're still

  1707. writing it for

  1708. us.

  1709. That would

  1710. lead us to

  1711. greater hope

  1712. and confidence

  1713. and trust

  1714. and faith

  1715. in you.

  1716. And we

  1717. ask these

  1718. things in

  1719. the mighty

  1720. name of

  1721. Jesus Christ.

  1722. Amen.
