  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here.

  4. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  9. This morning, we're continuing our series in the book of Judges.

  10. I will note, if you've been with us for a while, you know that we alternate between preaching books from the Old Testament

  11. and books from the New Testament. Judges is 21 chapters, and we're now in chapter 15,

  12. which means we're getting close to the end.

  13. So I'll just tell you, when we end Judges, we are then going to turn to the New Testament,

  14. and we're going to jump into the book of Romans.

  15. But we're not in Romans yet. We're in Judges.

  16. And you'll remember that Judges is about a number of things.

  17. It is about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  18. It's about the need for a faithful and true king,

  19. a king who can do what no human can do, which is to change the hearts of men.

  20. And it's about the power of spirit-filled leadership.

  21. And it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people, people like you and me.

  22. This week, we're picking up again the story of Samson, which I believe is the longest story in the book.

  23. And last week, we saw that while Samson is a mess, God is still at work.

  24. Samson continues to be a mess this week,

  25. but we'll turn from just Samson's individual problems to the problems of the nation of Israel,

  26. and we'll see close up the danger of compromise.

  27. With that, I invite you to turn with me to Judges chapter 15.

    Judges 15 chapter mention

  28. You can turn in your Bible.

  29. You can turn on your phone.

  30. You can turn in your worship guide.

  31. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  32. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  33. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  34. And so that's why we read now Judges chapter 15, starting at verse 1.

    Judges 15 chapter mention

  35. After some days at the time of wheat harvest, Samson went to visit his wife with a young goat.

  36. And he said, I will go into my wife in the chamber.

  37. But her father would not allow him to go in.

  38. And her father said, I really thought that you utterly hated her.

  39. So I gave her to your companion.

  40. Is not her younger sister more beautiful than she?

  41. Please take her instead.

  42. And Samson said to them, this time I shall be innocent in regard to the Philistines when I do them harm.

  43. So Samson went and caught 300 foxes and took torches.

  44. And he turned them tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails.

  45. And when he had set fire to the torches, he let the foxes go into the standing grain of the Philistines.

  46. And set fire to the stacked grain and the standing grain, as well as the olive orchards.

  47. Then the Philistines said, who has done this?

  48. And they said, Samson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, because he has taken his wife and given her to his companion.

  49. And the Philistines came up and burned her and her father with fire.

  50. And Samson said to them, if this is what you do, I swear I will be avenged on you.

  51. And after that, I will quit.

  52. And he struck them hip and thigh with a great blow.

  53. And he went down and stayed in the cleft of the rock of Edom.

  54. Verse 9.

  55. Then the Philistines came up and encamped in Judah and made a raid on Lehi.

  56. And the men of Judah said, why have you come up against us?

  57. They said, we have come up to bind Samson, to do to him as he did to us.

  58. Then 3,000 men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Edom and said to Samson,

  59. do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us?

  60. What then is this that you have done to us?

  61. And he said to them, as they did to me, so I have done to them.

  62. Verse 12.

  63. And they said to him, we have come down to bind you that we may give you into the hands of the Philistines.

  64. And Samson said to them, swear to me that you will not attack me yourselves.

  65. They said to him, no, we will only bind you and give you into their hands.

  66. We will surely not kill you.

  67. So they bound him with two new ropes and brought him up from the rock.

  68. When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting to meet him.

  69. Then the spirit of the Lord rushed upon him and the ropes that were on his arms became as flax that has caught fire.

  70. And his bonds melted off his hands.

  71. And he found a fresh jawbone of a donkey and put out his hand and took it.

  72. And with it he struck one thousand men.

  73. And Samson said, with the jawbone of a donkey, heaps upon heaps.

  74. With the jawbone of a donkey have I struck down a thousand men.

  75. As soon as he had finished speaking, he threw away the jawbone out of his hand.

  76. And that place was called Ramath-Lehi.

  77. Verse 18.

  78. And he was very thirsty and he called upon the Lord and said,

  79. You have granted this great salvation by the hand of your servant.

  80. And shall I now die of thirst and fall into the hands of the uncircumcised?

  81. And God split open the hollow place that is at Lehi and water came out from it.

  82. And when he drank, his spirit returned and he revived.

  83. Therefore the name of it was called En-Hakor.

  84. It is at Lehi to this day.

  85. And he judged Israel in the days of the Philistines twenty years.

  86. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  87. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you again that you've given us your word,

  88. that you instruct us, that you teach us, that you lead us and guide us.

  89. And we ask that you would do that this morning.

  90. That you would use this passage in the book of Judges

  91. to warn us and to encourage us.

  92. Most of all, you would use it to show us Jesus.

  93. That we would see again that his grace is greater than our sin.

  94. That you're faithful even when we're faithless.

  95. We ask that we would see him as more beautiful and glorious

  96. and loving and powerful than we ever knew.

  97. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name.

  98. Amen.

  99. Like a good drama, like any good drama,

  100. the author of Judges left us last time with a real cliffhanger.

  101. If you remember the end of chapter 14, the very last verse,

  102. we were told this,

  103. Samson's wife was given to his companion

  104. who had been his best man.

  105. Okay, not just someone else.

  106. It's not just that there's another man with Samson's wife.

  107. No, we're told it is his best man.

  108. The reason being, the verse before,

  109. Samson leaves in anger.

  110. You may remember that he had this competition

  111. with the people of his wife

  112. and they had this bet, this riddle they were supposed to solve

  113. and they threatened his wife.

  114. So she revealed the answer to the riddle.

  115. And so Samson is filled with rage,

  116. goes to town on the Philistines.

  117. What is very clear though,

  118. is that he and this woman are in fact married.

  119. She is not his girlfriend.

  120. She is not his fiance.

  121. She is his wife.

  122. And so his father-in-law has no business doing what he did.

  123. He is completely out of line,

  124. having handed her off to another man.

  125. That sets the stage for our drama here in chapter 15.

  126. Verse two, the father makes this attempt at appeasement

  127. saying, hey, you can have another one of my daughters.

  128. And you know what?

  129. Actually, you're gonna get a good deal out of this.

  130. She's actually more attractive

  131. than the woman that you married.

  132. So why don't we do that?

  133. And we can just call it good.

  134. Samson is not interested in appeasement.

  135. He actually sees an opportunity for revenge.

  136. And that's in fact exactly what he does

  137. in verses four and five.

  138. We might call this a disproportionate response.

  139. Samson has been offended by one man.

  140. He goes after all the Philistines.

  141. There has been a private offense.

  142. Samson goes on a public campaign.

  143. He picks these 300 foxes.

  144. He splits them into 150 pairs.

  145. And then he goes and destroys the Philistines' food supply.

  146. I have a problem with one man.

  147. There's tension in one family.

  148. You know what?

  149. Let's wreck all men.

  150. Let's wreck every family.

  151. That seems like a really kind of proportion,

  152. measured, reasonable response.

  153. Now, it's easy for us to focus here on the grain

  154. that he destroys.

  155. They're not going to have anything to eat.

  156. It's actually even worse than that.

  157. Note in verse five,

  158. he's not just going after the grain.

  159. He goes after the olive orchards.

  160. And if you're familiar with the Mediterranean,

  161. you know that olive orchards are a big deal.

  162. Not only are they a big deal,

  163. they take generations to build up and cultivate.

  164. Many olive trees survive for 500 years.

  165. There's at least one olive tree

  166. that's known to have been in existence for 1,500 years.

  167. Samson is out for revenge.

  168. Samson is out of control.

  169. Samson chooses a response

  170. that is wildly out of proportion

  171. to what has happened here.

  172. To understand the severity of what Samson's doing,

  173. I'll remind you of something

  174. I told you a couple years ago.

  175. If you're familiar with Colorado gun laws,

  176. you know that to use lethal force,

  177. there needs to be a lethal threat.

  178. In other words, if you are stealing my car,

  179. I'm not allowed to shoot you

  180. because you're not threatening my life.

  181. Okay, so I can end up in trouble for that,

  182. except in one circumstance.

  183. Colorado law says you can use lethal force

  184. if someone is attempting arson.

  185. Why?

  186. Because it's so destructive, right?

  187. Because the threat of someone's life,

  188. lethal threat is downstream of arson.

  189. This is something, right,

  190. that could burn up our state.

  191. And so it makes sense

  192. that this would be something considered so serious

  193. that that's the one exception

  194. where you're allowed to use lethal force.

  195. That helps us understand

  196. the severity of the Philistines' response here.

  197. To wreck someone's food supply,

  198. to destroy all their grain

  199. and all their olive trees,

  200. is an absolute declaration of war.

  201. Samson has a problem with one family.

  202. He declares war on the entire nation.

  203. We see once again,

  204. Samson is a mess.

  205. Now, I don't mean to excuse

  206. the Philistines' behavior here,

  207. but understanding that,

  208. their response begins to make sense.

  209. Verse six, they say,

  210. look, you're gonna burn our fields.

  211. You're gonna burn our olive trees.

  212. Guess what?

  213. We'll burn your wife

  214. and your father-in-law.

  215. Even worse than that,

  216. we're gonna take a step further.

  217. We are going to launch an offensive against Judah.

  218. You come after our nation.

  219. You come after our people.

  220. We'll come after your nation.

  221. We'll come after your people.

  222. What's good for the goose

  223. is good for the gander.

  224. Fair is fair.

  225. And it's at this point,

  226. we begin to see the main theme,

  227. the main problem of this chapter.

  228. Verse 10,

  229. they come against the people of Judah.

  230. And the men of Judah say,

  231. hey, what's going on?

  232. Why are you here?

  233. Philistines tell them

  234. there's one simple reason

  235. that we're here, Samson.

  236. Now, at this point,

  237. if we were earlier in the book of Judges,

  238. we would expect one thing to happen.

  239. What should Judah do at this point?

  240. Oh, the Philistines,

  241. who are our oppressors,

  242. are coming up against us to attack us.

  243. There's only one logical answer.

  244. Let's muster our troops.

  245. Right?

  246. It is time for war.

  247. It is time for us to see God at work once again

  248. and to throw off the shackles of our oppressors.

  249. That's what we should expect Israel to do.

  250. What should we expect Samson to do?

  251. If he was like any other judge,

  252. he would show some leadership at this point.

  253. If you haven't noticed,

  254. Samson is not exactly a team player.

  255. All the other judges were.

  256. Samson should be saying,

  257. I will lead you, right?

  258. I am the strong man.

  259. I'm even stronger than Jethro.

  260. You thought Jethro was great at war?

  261. Wait till you see what I can do.

  262. Israel should be uniting together

  263. to fight the Philistines.

  264. And they do the exact opposite.

  265. Oh, you're here because of Samson?

  266. I think we can clear this up.

  267. Why don't you take him?

  268. He's our judge.

  269. God raised him up.

  270. He has this incredible birth story.

  271. But you know what?

  272. None of that really matters.

  273. Things are good as they are.

  274. How about we just hand him over?

  275. You know, we say, it's all good.

  276. We wash our hands of this.

  277. Once again, we have a sad and crushing disappointment.

  278. Once again, God's people are worse than ever before.

  279. Israel is completely upside down.

  280. God's people should be rallying behind their judge

  281. and fighting their enemies.

  282. Instead, they betray their judge

  283. and they're sympathetic to their enemies.

  284. Notice their words in verse 11.

  285. Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us?

  286. That's what's stated.

  287. What's unstated is this.

  288. And that's the way we like it.

  289. Don't you know these people are the ones in charge?

  290. Why, Samson?

  291. Why would you disrupt the status quo?

  292. If you oppose your leader

  293. and you befriend your enemies,

  294. something is very wrong.

  295. Judah is not just sick.

  296. She is really sick.

  297. Things are not just twisted in Israel.

  298. They are completely upside down.

  299. This helps us understand, by the way,

  300. what was happening in Judges chapter 14.

    Judges 14 chapter mention

  301. Remember when Samson goes out to find a Philistine wife,

  302. his parents are so upset and distraught over it.

  303. And we had that key verse, verse 4, where it said this,

  304. his father and mother did not know that it was from the Lord,

  305. for he was seeking an opportunity against the Philistines.

  306. Why is the Lord seeking an opportunity against the Philistines?

  307. Because Judah isn't.

  308. Why does God need to use Samson to stir the pot?

  309. Because God's people are complacent with their oppression.

  310. Israel is okay being ruled by the Philistines.

  311. Israel is happy for a pagan nation to be in control.

  312. Israel is content to be ruled by sin.

  313. So the point is this.

  314. Things have gotten so bad that God's people now embrace oppression.

  315. Things are so bad that they see the wrong leaders as the right leaders.

  316. Things are so upside down that they betray their very own judge.

  317. Remember also what was weird about chapter 14.

  318. This was the first time Israel did not cry out for God's help.

  319. What once they saw as wrong, they now see as normal.

  320. And in fact, as the book of Judges goes on,

  321. it's going to continue to go downhill.

  322. They will embrace the pagan culture more and more.

  323. Judah has made a devastating compromise with sin.

  324. This brings out another element of the book of Judges,

  325. which is that we see the way in which evil works,

  326. the way that sin operates.

  327. Satan loves to chip away at God's people generation by generation.

  328. Compromise in one generation becomes apostasy in the next.

  329. Laziness in one generation turns into abandonment in the following one.

  330. Satan is willing to play the long game,

  331. and at least for a moment, it seems to be working.

  332. Remember, Judges 2, verse 19,

    Judges 2:19

  333. things got worse every generation.

  334. Every cycle, God's people go further down.

  335. There is compounding compromise that's happened in Israel.

  336. Albert Einstein once said,

  337. the most powerful force in the universe is compound interest.

  338. We might say another one of the most powerful forces in the world

  339. is compound compromise.

  340. Israel has given in over and over.

  341. Israel is becoming worse and worse.

  342. So our passage reminds us of one of the great tensions of the Christian life,

  343. tension we already read about,

  344. Scott read to us from John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  345. And the tension is this,

  346. that God calls his people to be in the world,

  347. not of the world.

  348. That's what Jesus prays for in John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  349. This is on page 3 of your worship guide.

  350. In verse 11, he just says it straightforward.

  351. They are in the world.

  352. He's referring to his people.

  353. He's referring to the church.

  354. And then he gives this prayer in verses 15 and 16.

  355. I do not ask that you take them out of the world,

  356. but that you keep them from the evil one.

  357. They are not of the world,

  358. just as I am not of the world.

  359. Judges 15 challenges us

  360. to examine

  361. where are we in the world

  362. and of the world.

  363. Where have we made compromises with sin?

  364. Where have the twisted parts

  365. of our culture become normal to us?

  366. You'll see this on page 9 of your worship guide.

  367. It's easy for us to look at another culture

  368. and see how a member of God's people

  369. has sold out to the surrounding culture.

  370. We're more unwilling to look hard

  371. at where we might have done so.

  372. Brings us back to one of the major themes

  373. of the book of Judges,

  374. the need for constant renewal

  375. and revival among God's people.

  376. It is our default setting

  377. as we walk in this world

  378. to assume that what's normal for the culture

  379. must be normal for us.

  380. And so we forget

  381. what it means

  382. the water around us that we swim in.

  383. So we give in

  384. to self-expression

  385. and radical individualism,

  386. which leads us to rampant divorce

  387. and isolation.

  388. We assume

  389. that the culture's level

  390. of consumption

  391. is good

  392. and right.

  393. We believe

  394. the good life

  395. is made up

  396. of materialism

  397. and sex

  398. and status.

  399. We're desensitized

  400. to the sexual images

  401. that assault us

  402. on social media

  403. and in line

  404. at the grocery store.

  405. We adopt

  406. the tone

  407. and anger

  408. of the political discourse

  409. around us

  410. as normal

  411. for Christians

  412. to take part in.

  413. Where have we

  414. become comfortable

  415. with the twisted values

  416. of the world

  417. around us?

  418. Where do we say

  419. don't you know

  420. that the Philistines

  421. are rulers

  422. over us

  423. and that's

  424. the way

  425. we like it?

  426. Thankfully,

  427. Israel's betrayal

  428. does not have

  429. the last word

  430. and thankfully,

  431. God's grace

  432. really is

  433. greater

  434. than our sin.

  435. The story

  436. does not end

  437. with Samson

  438. being defeated

  439. by the Philistines.

  440. In fact,

  441. quite the opposite.

  442. The 3,000 men

  443. who should be

  444. marching

  445. against the Philistines

  446. come instead

  447. to Samson.

  448. This is verse 11

  449. and they bind

  450. the sacrifice

  451. that they're offering

  452. for the sake

  453. of peace.

  454. They don't just

  455. bind him,

  456. by the way.

  457. It's not simply

  458. ropes.

  459. They are new ropes.

  460. This is verse 13.

  461. And new ropes

  462. are going to be

  463. even tighter

  464. than old ropes.

  465. They're going to be

  466. even harder

  467. to pull apart.

  468. They know

  469. Samson's strong

  470. solution

  471. make his bonds

  472. even stronger.

  473. We're not going to

  474. get tricked

  475. or fooled.

  476. We're not going to

  477. give him

  478. or bind him

  479. in something

  480. that he can easily

  481. break out of.

  482. No,

  483. we're going to make sure

  484. Samson,

  485. for once,

  486. is actually

  487. under control.

  488. And God

  489. once again

  490. pours out

  491. his spirit

  492. on his judge

  493. to deliver

  494. his people.

  495. Verse 14

  496. or 13.

  497. No,

  498. it's verse 14.

  499. The ropes

  500. that were on

  501. his hands

  502. became as

  503. flax

  504. that has

  505. caught fire

  506. and his bonds

  507. melted off

  508. his hands.

  509. Why?

  510. Because the spirit

  511. of the Lord

  512. rushed

  513. upon him.

  514. God performs

  515. another miracle

  516. on behalf

  517. of Samson.

  518. God saves

  519. his judge

  520. once again.

  521. God keeps

  522. his promise.

  523. He will begin

  524. to save

  525. his people

  526. from the Philistines.

  527. What does

  528. Samson do?

  529. he finds

  530. a jawbone

  531. and he wrecks

  532. the Philistines.

  533. Verse 15.

  534. With it

  535. he struck

  536. one thousand

  537. men.

  538. Yes.

  539. Israel

  540. has turned

  541. upside down.

  542. And yes,

  543. Israel

  544. opposes

  545. their leader

  546. and cozies

  547. up to

  548. their friends.

  549. And

  550. God

  551. remains

  552. faithful

  553. to his

  554. people.

  555. God

  556. continues

  557. to keep

  558. his promise.

  559. God

  560. continues

  561. to rescue.

  562. God

  563. uses

  564. Israel's

  565. compromise

  566. and

  567. he uses

  568. Samson's

  569. anger

  570. to accomplish

  571. his purpose.

  572. No matter

  573. what,

  574. God

  575. still

  576. prevails.

  577. No matter

  578. what,

  579. God

  580. is still

  581. in control.

  582. No matter

  583. what,

  584. he remains

  585. faithful

  586. to his

  587. people

  588. and his

  589. promises.

  590. God

  591. rescues

  592. his people

  593. even when

  594. they don't

  595. deserve it.

  596. Christian,

  597. God

  598. rescues

  599. you

  600. even when

  601. you don't

  602. deserve it,

  603. which is

  604. every time.

  605. God's

  606. grace

  607. really is

  608. greater

  609. than our

  610. sin.

  611. God

  612. even

  613. after this

  614. rescue,

  615. Samson's

  616. behavior

  617. leaves much

  618. to be

  619. desired.

  620. Verse 16

  621. and 17,

  622. we see

  623. Samson's

  624. version

  625. of a

  626. touchdown

  627. dance.

  628. And you

  629. may have

  630. noticed

  631. verse 16

  632. and 17,

  633. he writes

  634. a poem

  635. and this

  636. poem is

  637. exclusively

  638. focused on

  639. how great

  640. God is

  641. in his

  642. salvation for

  643. his people.

  644. Right?

  645. You see

  646. that?

  647. No.

  648. Verse 17,

  649. with the

  650. jawbone of

  651. a donkey

  652. have I

  653. struck down

  654. a thousand

  655. men.

  656. There's no

  657. mention of

  658. the Lord.

  659. Samson,

  660. even as

  661. God shows

  662. him great

  663. mercy and

  664. grace,

  665. is completely

  666. full of

  667. himself.

  668. Verse 17,

  669. we find

  670. out that

  671. Samson is

  672. the one

  673. who invented

  674. the process

  675. of dropping

  676. the mic.

  677. Except instead

  678. of dropping

  679. the mic,

  680. he tosses

  681. the jawbone

  682. on the

  683. ground.

  684. Y'all see

  685. that?

  686. I killed

  687. a thousand

  688. Philistines,

  689. I got

  690. a poem.

  691. What?

  692. Look at

  693. Samson

  694. now.

  695. Then,

  696. verse 18,

  697. he talks

  698. to God

  699. with this

  700. little

  701. passive

  702. aggressive

  703. statement.

  704. Shall I

  705. now die

  706. of thirst

  707. and fall

  708. into the

  709. hands

  710. of the

  711. uncircumcised?

  712. Just in

  713. case it's

  714. not clear,

  715. that is

  716. not the

  717. way you

  718. speak to

  719. the living

  720. God.

  721. God has

  722. no response,

  723. just

  724. provision.

  725. Verse 19,

  726. he gives

  727. Samson

  728. water.

  729. And then

  730. in verse

  731. 20,

  732. God drops

  733. the mic.

  734. and he

  735. judged

  736. Israel

  737. in the

  738. days

  739. of the

  740. Philistines

  741. 20 years.

  742. What does

  743. it say

  744. at the

  745. end of

  746. all the

  747. other

  748. judges'

  749. reigns?

  750. It says

  751. the people

  752. had peace

  753. for X

  754. number of

  755. years.

  756. Not so

  757. here.

  758. The

  759. Philistines

  760. are rulers

  761. over them.

  762. The

  763. Philistines

  764. continue

  765. to be

  766. rulers

  767. over them.

  768. Samson's

  769. work

  770. as a

  771. judge

  772. is

  773. compromised

  774. and

  775. incomplete.

  776. Remember

  777. from chapter

  778. 14,

  779. he will

  780. begin

  781. to save

  782. his people

  783. from the

  784. Philistines.

  785. Samson

  786. is

  787. the

  788. worst

  789. judge.

  790. As we

  791. come to

  792. the end

  793. of the

  794. book of

  795. Judges,

  796. we see

  797. two things

  798. that are

  799. going to

  800. stand out

  801. over and

  802. over again,

  803. and they're

  804. this.

  805. Israel is

  806. dripping

  807. with

  808. compromise,

  809. but God

  810. is dripping

  811. with grace.

  812. Israel has

  813. completely

  814. lost her

  815. way.

  816. God

  817. saves her

  818. again

  819. and again.

  820. God

  821. will

  822. do

  823. that.

  824. The

  825. tension

  826. of the

  827. book of

  828. Judges

  829. is this.

  830. How can

  831. God

  832. do that

  833. over and

  834. over?

  835. Why is

  836. he gracious

  837. to his

  838. people who

  839. have lost

  840. the way?

  841. Why does

  842. he give

  843. water to

  844. judges who

  845. praise

  846. themselves

  847. rather

  848. than him?

  849. God

  850. can

  851. God

  852. be

  853. just

  854. and

  855. merciful?

  856. Of course,

  857. the answer

  858. comes in

  859. our Lord

  860. Jesus.

  861. God

  862. is able

  863. to show

  864. us

  865. mercy

  866. when we

  867. lose the

  868. plot

  869. because he

  870. showed

  871. judgment

  872. to Jesus

  873. when he

  874. was on

  875. the cross.

  876. God

  877. is able

  878. to be

  879. present

  880. with his

  881. people in

  882. their failure

  883. and their

  884. mess

  885. because he

  886. forsake

  887. his one

  888. and only

  889. son.

  890. God's

  891. grace

  892. is greater

  893. than our

  894. sin

  895. because

  896. Jesus'

  897. sacrifice

  898. paid

  899. the price.

  900. We

  901. have

  902. a great

  903. and greater

  904. judge.

  905. Jesus

  906. is the

  907. reason

  908. that God

  909. can show

  910. his

  911. people

  912. grace

  913. in the

  914. midst

  915. of

  916. failure.

  917. Jesus

  918. is the

  919. reason

  920. that if

  921. we lose

  922. the

  923. plot,

  924. God

  925. is still

  926. at work.

  927. We need

  928. a faithful

  929. and true

  930. king.

  931. We need

  932. a king

  933. who can

  934. do

  935. what no

  936. human

  937. can

  938. do

  939. which

  940. is to

  941. change

  942. the

  943. hearts

  944. of

  945. men.

  946. Samson

  947. is a

  948. failure.

  949. He'll

  950. never

  951. be the

  952. one

  953. we can

  954. rely

  955. on.

  956. Jesus,

  957. the

  958. king,

  959. we

  960. actually

  961. need.

  962. So that's

  963. why we

  964. started this

  965. sermon with

  966. this.

  967. Great is

  968. thy

  969. faithfulness,

  970. O God

  971. my

  972. father.

  973. There

  974. is no

  975. shadow

  976. of

  977. turning

  978. with

  979. thee.

  980. God's

  981. grace

  982. is

  983. greater

  984. than

  985. our

  986. sin.

  987. If we

  988. are

  989. faithless,

  990. he

  991. remains

  992. faithful,

  993. for he

  994. cannot

  995. deny

  996. himself.

  997. Let's

  998. pray.

  999. Our

  1000. father in

  1001. heaven,

  1002. we do

  1003. praise you

  1004. and thank

  1005. you that

  1006. you are

  1007. merciful and

  1008. gracious to

  1009. us.

  1010. Even when

  1011. we live

  1012. Samson

  1013. lives,

  1014. even when

  1015. we lose

  1016. the plot,

  1017. even when

  1018. we compromise

  1019. with the

  1020. world around

  1021. us,

  1022. that you

  1023. don't give

  1024. up.

  1025. We ask

  1026. that you

  1027. would remind

  1028. us of

  1029. that truth

  1030. again,

  1031. that you

  1032. would drive

  1033. it deep

  1034. into our

  1035. hearts,

  1036. that it

  1037. would change

  1038. our lives,

  1039. our minds,

  1040. our affections.

  1041. We ask

  1042. these things

  1043. in Jesus'

  1044. name.

  1045. Amen.

  1046. I invite

  1047. you to

  1048. stand for

  1049. our
