  1. and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here,

  5. and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community,

  7. and as we follow Jesus together,

  8. we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace,

  10. and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  11. which is why we come back week after week

  12. to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  13. What I'm about to say has nothing to do with Judges chapter 17,

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  14. but I was thinking this morning as we were worshiping,

  15. the longer I serve as a pastor,

  16. one of the emotions for me that grows and grows is that of gratitude.

  17. I am more and more just grateful for the folks who come here every Sunday.

  18. There are many places that you could be this morning,

  19. and God called you here.

  20. And I'm grateful for every month that God sustains this church financially.

  21. Grateful as he brings new people and he blesses them as they go out.

  22. And so I just want to say as we start this morning, I'm grateful for you.

  23. And I'm glad that you're here.

  24. And I always mean that,

  25. but I mean that I think more and more as the months go by.

  26. And so one of my catchphrases now,

  27. as I see many of you on Sunday mornings,

  28. I just say I'm glad you're here,

  29. and that's because I am.

  30. I'm grateful that God has brought this church community together.

  31. With that, we are continuing our series in the book of Judges.

  32. And you will remember that the book of Judges is about many things.

  33. It is about our need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  34. It's about the need for a faithful and true king,

  35. a king who can do what no human can do,

  36. which is to change the hearts of men.

  37. It is about the power of spirit-filled leadership,

  38. and it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people,

  39. people like you and me.

  40. Now, last time we were here,

  41. we finished the story of Samson,

  42. and you'll remember we saw God's redemption in Samson's life.

  43. He used Samson's greatest failure to bring about,

  44. in fact, Samson's greatest success.

  45. We talked about that's the way that God's redemption works in this world,

  46. and I reminded you that wherever you are

  47. or whatever you've done,

  48. if you're still alive,

  49. all is not lost.

  50. That was the end of the lesson of Samson,

  51. and I told you for a while that Samson was the last and worst judge.

  52. And so there's a sense in which we are done with judges.

  53. We are done with judges when it comes to them as people,

  54. as rulers of Israel.

  55. We, however, are not done with the book of Judges.

  56. So Samson ends in chapter 16.

  57. Judges goes all the way to chapter 21,

  58. because now we move away from these central figures,

  59. these leaders,

  60. and instead the author of the book of Judges

  61. begins to tell us what it was like for normal, everyday Israelites.

  62. We go from looking at the chiefs of God's people

  63. to what it was like day to day on the ground in Israel.

  64. And just as we saw with the judges,

  65. we're going to see with their people

  66. that there is a fast descent downwards.

  67. As with that, I invite you to turn with me.

  68. We're in Judges chapter 17.

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  69. You can turn in your Bible.

  70. You can turn on your phone.

  71. You can turn in your worship guide.

  72. No matter where you turn,

  73. remember God tells us in Proverbs chapter 30

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  74. that every word of God proves true.

  75. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  76. And so that's why we read now Judges chapter 17,

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  77. starting in verse 1.

  78. There was a man of the hill country of Ephraim

  79. whose name was Micah.

  80. And he said to his mother,

  81. The eleven hundred pieces of silver that were taken from you,

  82. about which you uttered a curse,

  83. and also spoken in my ears,

  84. Behold, the silver is with me.

  85. I took it.

  86. And his mother said,

  87. Blessed be my son by the Lord.

  88. And he restored the eleven hundred pieces of silver to his mother.

  89. And his mother said,

  90. I dedicate the silver to the Lord from my hand for my son

  91. to make a carved image and a metal image.

  92. Now, therefore, I will restore it to you.

  93. So when he restored the money to his mother,

  94. his mother took two hundred pieces of silver

  95. and gave it to the silversmith,

  96. who made it into a carved image and a metal image.

  97. And it was in the house of Micah.

  98. Verse 5.

  99. And the man Micah had a shrine,

  100. and he made an ephod and household gods

  101. and ordained one of his sons who became his priest.

  102. In those days there was no king in Israel.

  103. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  104. Now there was a young man of Bethlehem in Judah

  105. of the family of Judah who was a Levite,

  106. and he sojourned there.

  107. And the man departed from the town of Bethlehem in Judah

  108. to sojourn where he could find a place.

  109. And as he journeyed,

  110. he came to the hill country of Ephraim

  111. to the house of Micah.

  112. And Micah said to him,

  113. Where do you come from?

  114. And he said to him,

  115. I am a Levite of Bethlehem in Judah,

  116. and I am going to sojourn where I may find a place.

  117. And Micah said to him,

  118. Stay with me and be to me a father and a priest.

  119. And I will give you ten pieces of silver a year

  120. and a suit of clothes and your living.

  121. And the Levite went in.

  122. And the Levite was content to dwell with the man,

  123. and the young man became to him like one of his sons.

  124. And Micah ordained the Levite,

  125. and the young man became his priest

  126. and was in the house of Micah.

  127. Then Micah said,

  128. Now I know that the Lord will prosper me

  129. because I have a Levite as priest.

  130. I invite you to pray with me

  131. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  132. Our Father in heaven,

  133. we do praise you and thank you

  134. that you do sustain us.

  135. You sustain this church day by day and month by month.

  136. You sustain us in our lives,

  137. in our faith,

  138. by your spirit.

  139. And we thank you that you sustain us by your word.

  140. We ask that you would do that again this morning.

  141. That you would use it to instruct us

  142. and to challenge us.

  143. You'd use it to encourage and comfort us.

  144. Most of all,

  145. you would use it to help us to see Jesus.

  146. That we would see his beauty and his glory

  147. and his majesty and his holiness.

  148. We'd see his power and his authority.

  149. We'd see his mercy and his grace and his love.

  150. And we ask that you would be merciful to us,

  151. that you would not leave us where we are,

  152. but that you would remember us,

  153. that you'd change us,

  154. that you would use our time together this morning

  155. to change us and make us look

  156. more like your son and our savior,

  157. our Lord Jesus.

  158. It's in his name that we ask all of these things.

  159. Amen.

  160. Many of you know that for several years

  161. before and even a little bit after I went to seminary,

  162. I was a teacher.

  163. And one of the concepts that I learned as a teacher

  164. was something called the irreducible minimum.

  165. It's a mouthful.

  166. But the irreducible minimum is what someone must know

  167. to move on to the next level.

  168. So there are certain things that you must learn

  169. in third grade if you are going to have success

  170. in fourth grade.

  171. And so on and so forth.

  172. The reason that someone fails a grade

  173. is not because the school is cruel or mean,

  174. but because they're saying to you,

  175. look, you actually don't have what you need

  176. to succeed the next level.

  177. If you cannot add or subtract,

  178. it is going to be very challenging

  179. for you to work with multiplication.

  180. I told you many times when we talked about Samson

  181. that Samson should have been taking senior level classes

  182. when it came to be an Israelite,

  183. and yet he was failing the most basic things.

  184. He was failing 101.

  185. Now we move along, as I mentioned,

  186. from the leaders of Israel

  187. to those folks who lived on the ground every day,

  188. everyday Israelites.

  189. And as we look at the rest of the book of Judges,

  190. what we are going to see is that at best,

  191. God's people are failing.

  192. That the most basic things,

  193. the most elementary commands

  194. that God has given to his people,

  195. that's best.

  196. At worst, God's people are doing unthinkable,

  197. unspeakable things.

  198. If you don't believe me,

  199. you can just look ahead to Judges chapter 19.

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  200. What is Israelite 101

  201. if not the Ten Commandments?

  202. I talked about that earlier this morning

  203. in our confession of faith.

  204. Those are the basics, right,

  205. of all the rules and laws and commands

  206. God gave his people.

  207. The Ten Commandments are the irreducible minimum.

  208. This is what they are meant to know most of all.

  209. This is what Jesus summarizes in Mark chapter 12.

    Mark 12 chapter mention

  210. Remember, he says,

  211. the sum of the law is love of God and love of neighbor.

  212. I mentioned the Ten Commandments here

  213. at the beginning of Judges chapter 17,

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  214. and I mention the irreducible minimum

  215. because the original audience

  216. who is reading this story,

  217. any Israelite who is hearing about

  218. what Micah is doing

  219. should notice immediately

  220. the Ten Commandments are being broken

  221. left and right.

  222. In fact, it starts at the very beginning.

  223. Verse 2,

  224. Micah has something to confess to his mother.

  225. This is his way, I guess,

  226. of honoring Mother's Day.

  227. Ironic that we're here this morning.

  228. Micah is not coming to his mother

  229. to confess that he broke a lamp, right,

  230. or he marked, you know,

  231. with his crayons in her favorite book.

  232. No, he just sort of casually stole from her

  233. 1,100 pieces of silver.

  234. You may remember from the story of Samson and Delilah,

  235. 1,100 pieces of silver we've seen before.

  236. That was the amount of money

  237. each lord of the Philistines

  238. offered to Delilah

  239. if she would hand over Samson.

  240. In other words,

  241. Micah has not taken $5

  242. from his mom's purse, okay?

  243. He has taken an enormous amount of money.

  244. So we're starting out here.

  245. Eighth commandment,

  246. thou shalt not steal.

  247. One commandment down.

  248. Now, at the same time,

  249. Micah is able to kill two birds with one stone.

  250. You may realize he's also broken another commandment,

  251. the fifth commandment,

  252. honor your father and your mother.

  253. And in a sense,

  254. it's not just Micah who's broken that commandment,

  255. it's also his mom.

  256. There's a man named G.I. Williamson

  257. who points out that the Ten Commandments,

  258. the fifth commandment,

  259. can be broken in two ways.

  260. The fifth commandment can be broken

  261. by children who refuse to honor their parents.

  262. And it can also be broken by parents

  263. who do not require their children to honor them.

  264. And we can make a safe assumption here

  265. that Micah's an adult,

  266. we find out he actually has a child.

  267. This is the dynamic he is used to with his mother.

  268. This is the way, perhaps, that he's been raised.

  269. I stole 1,100 pieces of silver.

  270. No big deal.

  271. I can just give it back.

  272. No consequence.

  273. So we've got two commandments broken at this point.

  274. But wait, there's more.

  275. We move on from verse 2 to verse 3.

  276. His mom says,

  277. hey, let's dedicate this silver

  278. and we're gonna make a carved image

  279. and a metal image.

  280. What did we confess together this morning

  281. if not the second commandment,

  282. which says this,

  283. no carved images.

  284. We're now up from two of the commandments

  285. to three of them,

  286. but we are not done yet.

  287. What happens in verse 5?

  288. They don't have just an idol.

  289. They don't have a household god.

  290. They have household gods, plural.

  291. Second commandment.

  292. The first commandment tells us,

  293. no other gods.

  294. We are not meant to miss this.

  295. In five verses,

  296. Micah and his mother have broken four commandments.

  297. And that is just scratching the surface.

  298. There is so much in this passage

  299. that is completely upside down.

  300. In fact, we don't have time this morning

  301. to list everything that Micah and his mom do

  302. that is twisted and inside out.

  303. I'll give you just a few of them.

  304. Verse 2,

  305. Micah comes and it seems like

  306. maybe he's repenting of stealing the silver.

  307. No, there's no repentance.

  308. Micah is afraid that the curse

  309. is going to fall on him.

  310. That's why we're told in verse 2,

  311. he heard the curse

  312. and then he returned the silver.

  313. Micah does not do this

  314. out of some sense of guilt or fear of God.

  315. No, he's very pragmatic.

  316. He was pragmatic in stealing the silver.

  317. He's pragmatic in returning the silver.

  318. Oh, I didn't realize

  319. this was going to involve a curse.

  320. Well, in that case, mom,

  321. here all of it is back.

  322. Maybe you can take that back for me.

  323. The mom doesn't get off the hook either.

  324. Verse 3,

  325. she takes the 1,100 pieces of silver

  326. and says,

  327. I'm going to dedicate this to God.

  328. We find out in verse 4,

  329. she gives not 1,100 pieces of silver,

  330. she gives 200 pieces of silver.

  331. And so the reader is left wondering,

  332. what happened to the other 900 pieces?

  333. All is dedicated to God.

  334. Only some reaches at the end.

  335. Verse 5,

  336. they set up their own worship site,

  337. which is in direct violation

  338. to what God has taught his people.

  339. There is to be one place of worship

  340. that God has established.

  341. And if that were not enough,

  342. Micah appoints,

  343. ordains his own son as a priest.

  344. And it should go without saying,

  345. God establishes priests,

  346. not men.

  347. How are things going for God's people?

  348. Everything is upside down.

  349. And we could go on.

  350. And commentators do on and on

  351. about everything in this passage

  352. that does not add up.

  353. That raises a question for us.

  354. What in fact is Micah thinking?

  355. He should know, right?

  356. As an Israelite,

  357. he should know the irreducible minimum.

  358. It should be obvious to him

  359. what is obvious to the readers.

  360. That he is so far away

  361. from God and his commands.

  362. Well, thankfully,

  363. we are not left to wonder.

  364. We find out very quickly

  365. exactly what it is

  366. that Micah is thinking.

  367. Verses 7 through 13.

  368. Now in verse 5,

  369. we found out that Micah

  370. made his son a priest.

  371. That is just for now.

  372. Micah is always willing

  373. to accept a better deal

  374. if it comes along.

  375. He is always willing

  376. to make an upgrade.

  377. And what shows up

  378. but the best upgrade

  379. that Micah could dream of?

  380. If you're familiar

  381. with the Old Testament,

  382. you know that the Levites

  383. were the Israelite tribe

  384. that were designated

  385. to serve as priests.

  386. And so those were the ones

  387. who were actually supposed

  388. to be managing God's house.

  389. And it's verses 7 through 8.

  390. Who comes along?

  391. What luck does Micah have

  392. but that a Levite

  393. stumbles across his path?

  394. This Levite, we're told,

  395. is looking,

  396. this is verse 8,

  397. for where he could find a place.

  398. In other words,

  399. this Levite had gone on

  400. to his LinkedIn profile

  401. and his profile picture

  402. had a banner on it

  403. that said,

  404. Open to work.

  405. He needed a place to plug in

  406. and so he's wandering around.

  407. He is looking for a place to serve.

  408. Micah is open to an upgrade.

  409. This is a deal made in heaven.

  410. There's a perfect match.

  411. The Levite wants work.

  412. Micah wants a Levite.

  413. And so they strike a deal,

  414. verses 10 through 12.

  415. And without getting into

  416. lots of nitty-gritty detail,

  417. I'll just tell you

  418. this deal is highly irregular.

  419. This is not the way

  420. that Levites are supposed

  421. to be chosen.

  422. It's not the way

  423. they're supposed to be compensated.

  424. This is not the way

  425. things work in God's house.

  426. But we've already gotten the picture

  427. that normal was thrown out

  428. a long time ago.

  429. And it's here

  430. that we finally get

  431. to the heart of the matter.

  432. Micah reveals to us

  433. what in the world

  434. he is thinking.

  435. There are two key

  436. and critical verses

  437. in chapter 17.

  438. One of those

  439. is the last verse,

  440. verse 15.

  441. Then Micah said,

  442. Now I know

  443. that the Lord

  444. will prosper me

  445. because I have

  446. a Levite

  447. as a priest.

  448. What is Micah thinking?

  449. Micah loves

  450. religious show.

  451. He has no

  452. religious substance.

  453. Micah is worried

  454. about certain rules.

  455. Micah has no category

  456. for deep

  457. and real holiness.

  458. Micah has religious

  459. actions

  460. and he has

  461. religious activity.

  462. And he does not

  463. have a heart

  464. for God.

  465. So what is Micah

  466. doing here?

  467. He makes it

  468. crystal clear

  469. that really

  470. all he's interested

  471. in doing

  472. is manipulating

  473. God.

  474. He is just

  475. like the pagan

  476. nations around him.

  477. Religion

  478. is merely

  479. a superstition.

  480. In fact,

  481. religion is something

  482. you can make up

  483. as you go along.

  484. If you have

  485. the right priest,

  486. God will bless you.

  487. He is showing

  488. us

  489. superstition

  490. at its

  491. very

  492. worst.

  493. In fact,

  494. one commentator

  495. says this,

  496. the Levite

  497. is nothing

  498. more

  499. than a good

  500. luck

  501. charm.

  502. We might

  503. say that Micah

  504. is like the

  505. Pharisees

  506. that Jesus

  507. condemns,

  508. clean on the

  509. outside,

  510. full of filth

  511. on the inside.

  512. And so

  513. Judges 17

  514. warns us

  515. about this.

  516. Possible for us

  517. as well

  518. to hide

  519. behind

  520. religious

  521. activity.

  522. It is

  523. possible

  524. to have

  525. religious

  526. show

  527. and pomp

  528. and circumstance

  529. untethered

  530. from a love

  531. for God

  532. and his

  533. ways.

  534. It is

  535. possible

  536. to claim

  537. the Christian

  538. faith

  539. and have

  540. merely

  541. external

  542. compliance

  543. to certain

  544. rules.

  545. It is

  546. possible

  547. to claim

  548. the Christian

  549. faith

  550. merely

  551. because of

  552. some sort

  553. of religious

  554. connection.

  555. Micah

  556. here gives

  557. us the

  558. formula.

  559. Now I

  560. know

  561. that the

  562. Lord

  563. will

  564. prosper

  565. me

  566. because

  567. I

  568. have

  569. a

  570. Levite

  571. as a

  572. priest.

  573. And so

  574. we might

  575. say this.

  576. Now I

  577. know

  578. the Lord

  579. will

  580. prosper

  581. me.

  582. I

  583. might be

  584. cheating

  585. on my

  586. taxes,

  587. but

  588. my

  589. grandfather

  590. was a

  591. pastor.

  592. I

  593. might be

  594. destroying

  595. others

  596. with my

  597. mouth,

  598. but I

  599. was baptized.

  600. and I

  601. grew up

  602. in the

  603. church.

  604. So I

  605. know that

  606. the Lord

  607. will

  608. prosper

  609. me.

  610. I

  611. might be

  612. immature

  613. and easily

  614. angered,

  615. but I

  616. have a

  617. big library

  618. that has

  619. a lot

  620. of theological

  621. books in

  622. it.

  623. Now I

  624. know

  625. that the

  626. Lord

  627. will

  628. prosper

  629. me.

  630. me.

  631. I

  632. might

  633. lie

  634. and

  635. conveniently

  636. change

  637. the

  638. story

  639. when the

  640. truth

  641. catches up

  642. with me,

  643. but I

  644. read my

  645. Bible

  646. every day.

  647. Now I

  648. know

  649. that the

  650. Lord

  651. will

  652. prosper

  653. me.

  654. of course,

  655. Micah

  656. could not

  657. be further

  658. from the

  659. truth.

  660. He set up

  661. a system

  662. that allows

  663. him to

  664. worship,

  665. something he

  666. can control,

  667. something that

  668. submits to

  669. his preferences,

  670. something that

  671. is mere

  672. superstition.

  673. Don't hear

  674. what I'm not

  675. saying.

  676. These are not

  677. bad things.

  678. It is good

  679. to have a

  680. Levite as

  681. a priest.

  682. In fact,

  683. Levites should

  684. be priests,

  685. right?

  686. The problem

  687. is focusing

  688. on good

  689. things and

  690. missing the

  691. great things.

  692. The problem

  693. is turning

  694. certain types

  695. of obedience

  696. into a

  697. superstition.

  698. Remember

  699. what Samuel,

  700. the prophet,

  701. says in

  702. 1 Samuel 15.

  703. Has the

  704. Lord as

  705. great delight

  706. in burnt

  707. offerings and

  708. sacrifices as

  709. in obeying the

  710. voice of the

  711. Lord?

  712. Behold,

  713. to obey

  714. is better

  715. than sacrifice

  716. and to

  717. listen

  718. than the

  719. fat of

  720. rams.

  721. God says

  722. the same

  723. thing through

  724. his prophets

  725. in other

  726. places.

  727. Amos 5

  728. and Jeremiah

  729. 6.

  730. God comes

  731. to his

  732. people and

  733. says,

  734. I will

  735. not accept

  736. your burnt

  737. offerings

  738. because you

  739. practice

  740. injustice.

  741. What did

  742. Brit read

  743. from us?

  744. From Matthew

    Matthew 23 chapter mention

  745. chapter 23,

  746. Jesus comes

  747. and condemns

  748. the religious

  749. leaders.

  750. He says,

  751. look,

  752. you worry

  753. about tithing

  754. on your

  755. herbs and

  756. mint and

  757. cumin.

  758. You know

  759. what?

  760. That's great.

  761. That's actually

  762. a good thing.

  763. And you've

  764. missed the

  765. weightier matters

  766. of the law.

  767. You've missed

  768. what matters

  769. most of all.

  770. The saddest

  771. thing of this

  772. passage perhaps

  773. is this,

  774. that Micah

  775. says this

  776. with no

  777. hint of

  778. irony.

  779. He is in

  780. fact self-deceived.

  781. He actually

  782. believes that

  783. the Lord

  784. will actually

  785. prosper him.

  786. that is how

  787. far Israel

  788. has fallen.

  789. That is how

  790. separated he

  791. is from

  792. what God

  793. actually calls

  794. his people

  795. to.

  796. And so the

  797. challenge for

  798. us is

  799. this.

  800. Where have

  801. we traded

  802. God's

  803. heart

  804. for mere

  805. religious

  806. ritual?

  807. Where have

  808. we exchanged

  809. the love

  810. of God

  811. and the

  812. love of

  813. neighbor

  814. for going

  815. through the

  816. motions in

  817. the right

  818. place at

  819. the right

  820. time?

  821. Israel has

  822. fallen

  823. far.

  824. They will

  825. fall even

  826. farther.

  827. Because they

  828. truly have

  829. forgotten

  830. the Lord.

  831. There's the

  832. problem here

  833. that Micah

  834. has of

  835. superstition.

  836. there's

  837. another

  838. problem that

  839. brings

  840. itself to

  841. the

  842. forefront

  843. in this

  844. passage

  845. and it's

  846. this.

  847. Micah

  848. and Israel

  849. make it

  850. up as

  851. they go

  852. along.

  853. This is

  854. buffet

  855. style

  856. worship.

  857. We will

  858. make sure

  859. we have

  860. this.

  861. We're

  862. going to

  863. have the

  864. Levites.

  865. We'll

  866. take that

  867. from the

  868. buffet.

  869. We know

  870. Levites

  871. are good.

  872. We're

  873. going to

  874. reject

  875. God's

  876. appointed

  877. worship

  878. place.

  879. We

  880. don't

  881. have a

  882. taste

  883. for that.

  884. We

  885. actually

  886. like having

  887. the worship

  888. site here

  889. in our

  890. town.

  891. It cuts

  892. down our

  893. gas mileage.

  894. It makes

  895. travel easier.

  896. We have the

  897. ephod here.

  898. We don't

  899. have to go

  900. somewhere else

  901. to receive

  902. God's

  903. revelation.

  904. This is

  905. convenient.

  906. What works

  907. for us

  908. is what

  909. we are

  910. going to

  911. do.

  912. Of course,

  913. the same

  914. is a

  915. temptation

  916. for the

  917. church

  918. today.

  919. I don't

  920. need to

  921. worship

  922. God as

  923. he's

  924. commanded.

  925. I don't

  926. need to

  927. search the

  928. scriptures to

  929. know what

  930. it is that

  931. God wants

  932. in the

  933. worship of

  934. his people.

  935. I don't

  936. need to

  937. gather with

  938. his people

  939. as he's

  940. called them

  941. to do

  942. together.

  943. No, I

  944. can make

  945. it up as

  946. I go

  947. along.

  948. You

  949. worship God

  950. at church.

  951. I worship

  952. God on

  953. the hiking

  954. trail.

  955. You think

  956. God has

  957. commanded you

  958. to read

  959. his word?

  960. That's

  961. great.

  962. God has

  963. been speaking

  964. to me

  965. through the

  966. self-help

  967. books that

  968. have come

  969. along my

  970. way.

  971. That's

  972. good for

  973. you.

  974. This is

  975. good for

  976. me.

  977. There's

  978. a new

  979. way of

  980. making up

  981. what feels

  982. good in

  983. the moment.

  984. You'll see

  985. this on

  986. page 7

  987. of your

  988. worship guide.

  989. Micah's

  990. family

  991. shapes a

  992. God who

  993. is convenient

  994. to follow.

  995. They

  996. follow the

  997. laws they

  998. like and

  999. ignore the

  1000. laws they

  1001. don't.

  1002. Why is it

  1003. that we

  1004. take God's

  1005. word and

  1006. find a

  1007. book and

  1008. go from

  1009. beginning to

  1010. end?

  1011. Because we

  1012. want to

  1013. protect

  1014. ourselves from

  1015. the temptation

  1016. of the

  1017. human heart

  1018. which is

  1019. to pick

  1020. and choose.

  1021. God's

  1022. God's

  1023. revelation

  1024. for his

  1025. people.

  1026. We want

  1027. to know

  1028. the entire

  1029. counsel of

  1030. God.

  1031. We want

  1032. to worship

  1033. God.

  1034. Not in the

  1035. way that we

  1036. like but in

  1037. the way that

  1038. God likes.

  1039. You wouldn't

  1040. give your

  1041. mother today

  1042. flowers she's

  1043. allergic to.

  1044. right?

  1045. We give

  1046. God the

  1047. worship that

  1048. he has

  1049. commanded.

  1050. Not what

  1051. suits us and

  1052. our preferences

  1053. and our

  1054. entertainment.

  1055. I told you

  1056. earlier there

  1057. are two key

  1058. verses in

  1059. chapter 17.

  1060. The first one

  1061. was chapter 13

  1062. which reveals

  1063. to us what's

  1064. happening inside

  1065. of Micah's

  1066. heart and

  1067. his mind.

  1068. The other

  1069. key verse

  1070. is verse 6

  1071. which is going

  1072. to become a

  1073. refrain in

  1074. our final

  1075. chapters.

  1076. In those

  1077. days there

  1078. was no

  1079. king in

  1080. Israel.

  1081. Everyone

  1082. did what

  1083. was right

  1084. in his

  1085. own eyes.

  1086. Now you

  1087. can take

  1088. that verse

  1089. and I

  1090. think it's

  1091. meant in

  1092. two senses.

  1093. In the

  1094. first sense

  1095. there is

  1096. a manner

  1097. in which

  1098. there is

  1099. no earthly

  1100. human

  1101. king in

  1102. Israel.

  1103. We are

  1104. looking forward

  1105. in a sense

  1106. to the

  1107. monarchy

  1108. that's to

  1109. come.

  1110. Solomon

  1111. and Saul

  1112. and David

  1113. have not

  1114. yet shown

  1115. up on

  1116. the scene.

  1117. So there's

  1118. a restraint

  1119. that's

  1120. lacking.

  1121. There is

  1122. however a

  1123. second sense.

  1124. We have

  1125. already seen

  1126. how deeply

  1127. God's

  1128. leaders fail.

  1129. Samson

  1130. did not

  1131. lead God's

  1132. people into

  1133. peace.

  1134. Jethro

  1135. was wildly

  1136. ignorant of

  1137. God's word.

  1138. We're going

  1139. to move on

  1140. to Solomon

  1141. and Saul

  1142. and David

  1143. who are

  1144. all

  1145. disappointments

  1146. in their

  1147. own way.

  1148. And so

  1149. what Judges

  1150. is pointing

  1151. us to

  1152. is beyond

  1153. simply the

  1154. period of

  1155. the monarchy

  1156. in Israel.

  1157. The author

  1158. of Judges

  1159. is not

  1160. merely saying

  1161. hey they

  1162. didn't have

  1163. a human

  1164. king and

  1165. so that's

  1166. why things

  1167. were so

  1168. crazy.

  1169. No they

  1170. did not

  1171. have

  1172. the

  1173. king.

  1174. they

  1175. did not

  1176. have

  1177. what

  1178. they

  1179. needed.

  1180. They

  1181. were not

  1182. honoring

  1183. God

  1184. as the

  1185. one

  1186. who

  1187. rules

  1188. and

  1189. reigns

  1190. over

  1191. this

  1192. world

  1193. and

  1194. over

  1195. his

  1196. people.

  1197. They

  1198. did not

  1199. have

  1200. the

  1201. Holy

  1202. Spirit

  1203. at work

  1204. in a

  1205. powerful

  1206. way

  1207. like we

  1208. do

  1209. now

  1210. because

  1211. the

  1212. full

  1213. and

  1214. final

  1215. and

  1216. ultimate

  1217. king

  1218. had

  1219. not

  1220. come.

  1221. What do

  1222. we do

  1223. with the

  1224. problems

  1225. of

  1226. Judges?

  1227. Remember I've

  1228. told you

  1229. one of the

  1230. problems

  1231. is this

  1232. that there

  1233. is a

  1234. need

  1235. for

  1236. constant

  1237. renewal

  1238. and

  1239. revival

  1240. among

  1241. God's

  1242. people.

  1243. And the

  1244. other

  1245. need

  1246. is for

  1247. a

  1248. faithful

  1249. and

  1250. true

  1251. king.

  1252. Judges

  1253. reminds us

  1254. that we

  1255. need not

  1256. a false

  1257. God.

  1258. We need

  1259. not a

  1260. God that

  1261. we can

  1262. control

  1263. through

  1264. the right

  1265. actions

  1266. or through

  1267. superstition.

  1268. No,

  1269. we need

  1270. a God

  1271. who can

  1272. in fact

  1273. transform

  1274. the hearts

  1275. and minds

  1276. and lives

  1277. of his

  1278. people.

  1279. We need

  1280. a true

  1281. and greater

  1282. king.

  1283. Brothers

  1284. and sisters,

  1285. we have

  1286. what the

  1287. Israelites

  1288. in Judges

  1289. did not

  1290. have.

  1291. We

  1292. have

  1293. a true

  1294. and greater

  1295. king.

  1296. The

  1297. solution

  1298. to the

  1299. problem

  1300. of Judges

  1301. is not

  1302. greater

  1303. self-discipline.

  1304. The

  1305. problem

  1306. is not,

  1307. the solution

  1308. is not

  1309. that they

  1310. would

  1311. study

  1312. God's

  1313. word

  1314. even

  1315. more

  1316. intently

  1317. so that

  1318. they would

  1319. be able

  1320. to avoid

  1321. the things

  1322. that

  1323. Jephthah

  1324. and Micah

  1325. do,

  1326. as helpful

  1327. as that

  1328. would be.

  1329. No,

  1330. the solution

  1331. is our

  1332. Lord Jesus.

  1333. Our

  1334. Lord Jesus

  1335. is the

  1336. king who

  1337. comes who

  1338. can do

  1339. what no

  1340. human can

  1341. do.

  1342. He is the

  1343. king who

  1344. comes and

  1345. receives the

  1346. punishment that

  1347. God's people

  1348. deserve.

  1349. He is the

  1350. king who

  1351. comes and

  1352. lives the

  1353. perfect life

  1354. that we

  1355. could not

  1356. live.

  1357. And

  1358. he is the

  1359. king who

  1360. ascended to

  1361. heaven and

  1362. is seated

  1363. at the

  1364. right hand

  1365. of God

  1366. the Father

  1367. Almighty.

  1368. Why does it

  1369. matter that

  1370. he is seated

  1371. at the

  1372. right hand

  1373. of God

  1374. the Father

  1375. Almighty?

  1376. Because,

  1377. remember,

  1378. Jesus makes

  1379. a promise

  1380. to his

  1381. people in

  1382. John 14

  1383. and John

  1384. 16.

  1385. He says,

  1386. I am going

  1387. to send

  1388. my spirit

  1389. to you.

  1390. That's why

  1391. he tells

  1392. them,

  1393. it is better

  1394. that I go

  1395. than that I

  1396. stay.

  1397. Because as

  1398. Jesus sits

  1399. at the right

  1400. hand of

  1401. God the

  1402. Father,

  1403. he is

  1404. sending out

  1405. the Holy

  1406. Spirit to

  1407. be at

  1408. work in

  1409. the hearts

  1410. and minds

  1411. and lives

  1412. of his

  1413. people doing

  1414. what no

  1415. human can

  1416. do,

  1417. to change

  1418. the hearts

  1419. of men.

  1420. In fact,

  1421. Jesus tells

  1422. us this in

  1423. John 14,

  1424. if you

  1425. love me,

  1426. you will

  1427. keep my

  1428. commandments.

  1429. And if we

  1430. left it right

  1431. there,

  1432. we would

  1433. easily be

  1434. crushed.

  1435. because who

  1436. among us

  1437. keeps God's

  1438. commandments?

  1439. Micah

  1440. certainly

  1441. doesn't.

  1442. We're not

  1443. crushed,

  1444. though,

  1445. because Jesus

  1446. doesn't end

  1447. it there.

  1448. Verse 16,

  1449. and I will

  1450. ask the

  1451. Father,

  1452. and he

  1453. will give

  1454. you another

  1455. helper to

  1456. be with

  1457. you forever,

  1458. even the

  1459. spirit of

  1460. truth,

  1461. whom the

  1462. world cannot

  1463. receive,

  1464. because it

  1465. neither sees

  1466. him nor

  1467. knows him.

  1468. You know

  1469. him,

  1470. for he dwells

  1471. with you

  1472. and will be

  1473. in you.

  1474. brothers and

  1475. sisters,

  1476. we do,

  1477. in fact,

  1478. have a

  1479. king.

  1480. We have

  1481. what Israel

  1482. could only

  1483. dream of

  1484. and look

  1485. forward to.

  1486. We have

  1487. great hope

  1488. that God

  1489. will continue

  1490. constant renewal

  1491. and revival

  1492. among his

  1493. people,

  1494. because we

  1495. have a true

  1496. and faithful

  1497. king,

  1498. a king who

  1499. can do

  1500. what no

  1501. human can

  1502. do,

  1503. which is to

  1504. change the

  1505. hearts of

  1506. men.

  1507. Let's pray.

  1508. Our Father

  1509. in heaven,

  1510. we do

  1511. praise you

  1512. and thank you

  1513. for our Lord

  1514. Jesus.

  1515. We thank you

  1516. that he's not

  1517. merely or simply

  1518. a good example.

  1519. We thank you

  1520. that he's not

  1521. just a good

  1522. teacher,

  1523. but we

  1524. thank you

  1525. that he is

  1526. the king

  1527. and ruler

  1528. of this

  1529. world

  1530. and of

  1531. your church.

  1532. We ask

  1533. that you

  1534. would continue

  1535. to honor

  1536. your promise.

  1537. Jesus promised

  1538. to send the

  1539. spirit to

  1540. his people,

  1541. that you

  1542. would be

  1543. at work

  1544. in our

  1545. lives,

  1546. in this

  1547. church,

  1548. that we

  1549. would not

  1550. be able

  1551. to say

  1552. there is

  1553. no king

  1554. here,

  1555. but we

  1556. would

  1557. recognize

  1558. you,

  1559. worship

  1560. you,

  1561. follow

  1562. you,

  1563. and serve

  1564. you as

  1565. our Lord

  1566. and our

  1567. Savior

  1568. and our

  1569. King.

  1570. We ask

  1571. these things

  1572. in the mighty

  1573. name of

  1574. Jesus Christ.

  1575. Amen.

  1576. I invite you

  1577. to stand

  1578. for our

  1579. closing hymn.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. You
