  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  4. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here.

  7. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  8. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  9. And as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced that there's no one so good.

  10. They don't need God's grace.

  11. And no one so bad that they can't have it,

  12. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  13. We're continuing our series in the book of Judges.

  14. And you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  15. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  16. It's about the need for a faithful and true king,

  17. a king who can do what no human can do, which is to change the hearts of men.

  18. It's about the power of spirit-filled leadership.

  19. It's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people, people like you and me.

  20. This morning we're picking up in Judges chapter 18.

    Judges 18 chapter mention

  21. You may remember, if you've been with us, that as we ended chapter 16,

  22. we actually ended the story of the Judges,

  23. if we think about Judges as the leaders of God's people.

  24. And while we may be finished with the Judges,

  25. we are not finished with the book of Judges.

  26. Since the last five chapters, turn away from Israel's leaders

  27. and instead show us what life was like for normal, everyday people,

  28. Monday through Sunday.

  29. Last week, or two weeks ago now, in chapter 17,

  30. we met the figure of Micah.

  31. And you'll remember that Micah had stolen 1,100 pieces of silver from his mom.

  32. He found out that she had cursed whoever had stolen the silver.

  33. And so to avoid the curse, he quickly gave it back to her.

  34. And both of them used it to set up idols,

  35. violating what we looked at earlier this morning, the second commandment.

  36. In fact, in the first five verses,

  37. they managed to break four of God's Ten Commandments.

  38. And so we talked about the fact that they had lots of religious show,

  39. no religious substance.

  40. They had lots of religious superstition, religious activity

  41. that wasn't tethered at all to any sort of real holiness or real obedience.

  42. And we saw in verse 6 the phrase that we're now going to begin to hear

  43. at the very end of the book,

  44. that in those days there was no king in Israel.

  45. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  46. This week in chapter 18,

  47. we're going to pick up on a theme that started last week

  48. that we left to the side

  49. because it comes more to the forefront in this chapter,

  50. which is the great disappointment,

  51. the great futility of idols.

  52. Micah makes these idols in chapter 17

  53. with great hope, great expectation, great trust.

  54. He finds out in chapter 18

  55. just what a terrible decision that was.

  56. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me in God's word.

  57. You can turn in your worship guide.

  58. You can turn in your phone.

  59. You can turn in your Bible.

  60. No matter where you turn,

  61. remember that this is God's word.

  62. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold,

  63. even the finest gold,

  64. and it is sweeter than honey,

  65. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  66. And so that's why we read now

  67. Judges chapter 18, starting in verse 1.

    Judges 18 chapter mention

  68. In those days there was no king in Israel.

  69. And in those days the tribe of the people of Dan

  70. was seeking for itself an inheritance to dwell in.

  71. For until then no inheritance among the tribes of Israel

  72. had fallen to them.

  73. So the people of Dan sent five able men

  74. from the whole number of their tribe,

  75. from Zorah and from Eshtael,

  76. to spy out the land and to explore it.

  77. And they said to them,

  78. Go and explore the land.

  79. And they came to the hill country of Ephraim

  80. to the house of Micah and lodged there.

  81. When they were by the house of Micah,

  82. they recognized the voice of the young Levite.

  83. And they turned aside and said to him,

  84. Who brought you here?

  85. What are you doing in this place?

  86. What is your business here?

  87. And he said to them,

  88. This is how Micah dealt with me.

  89. He has hired me, and I have become his priest.

  90. And they said to him,

  91. Inquire of God, please,

  92. that we may know whether the journey on which we are setting out will succeed.

  93. And the priest said to them,

  94. Go in peace.

  95. The journey on which you go is under the eye of the Lord.

  96. Verse 7.

  97. Then the five men departed and came to Laish and saw the people who were there,

  98. how they lived in security after the manner of the Sidonians,

  99. quiet and unsuspecting, lacking nothing that is in the earth and possessing wealth,

  100. and how they were far from the Sidonians and had no dealings with anyone.

  101. And when they came to their brothers at Zorah and Eshtail,

  102. their brothers said to them,

  103. What do you report?

  104. They said, Arise and let us go up against them,

  105. for we have seen the land,

  106. and behold, it is very good.

  107. And will you do nothing?

  108. Do not be slow to go,

  109. to enter in and possess the land.

  110. As soon as you go,

  111. you will come to an unsuspecting people.

  112. The land is spacious,

  113. for God has given it into your hands,

  114. a place where there is no lack of anything that is in the earth.

  115. Verse 11.

  116. So 600 men of the tribe of Dan,

  117. armed with weapons of war,

  118. set out from Zorah and Eshtail

  119. and went up and camped at Kiriath-Jerim in Judah.

  120. On this account,

  121. that place is called Mahanadan to this day.

  122. Behold, it is west of Kiriath-Jerim.

  123. And they passed on from there to the hill country of Ephraim

  124. and came to the house of Micah.

  125. Verse 14.

  126. Then the five men who had gone to scout out the country of Laish

  127. said to their brothers,

  128. Do you know that in these houses there are an ephod,

  129. household gods, a carved image, and a metal image?

  130. Now therefore consider what you will do.

  131. And they turned aside there

  132. and came to the house of the young Levite

  133. at the home of Micah

  134. and asked him about his welfare.

  135. Now the 600 men of the Danites,

  136. armed with their weapons of war,

  137. stood by the entrance of the gate.

  138. And the five men who had gone to scout out the land

  139. went up and entered and took the carved image,

  140. the ephod, the household gods,

  141. and the metal image,

  142. while the priest stood by the entrance of the gate

  143. with 600 men armed with weapons of war.

  144. Verse 18.

  145. And when these went into Micah's house

  146. and took the carved image,

  147. the ephod,

  148. the household gods,

  149. and the metal image,

  150. the priest said to them,

  151. What are you doing?

  152. And they said to him,

  153. Keep quiet.

  154. Put your hand on your mouth

  155. and come with us

  156. and be to us a father and a priest.

  157. Is it better for you to be a priest

  158. to the house of one man

  159. or to be priest to a tribe

  160. and a clan in Israel?

  161. And the priest's heart was glad.

  162. He took the ephod and the household gods

  163. and the carved image

  164. and went along with the people.

  165. So they turned and departed,

  166. putting the little ones

  167. and the livestock and the goods in front of them.

  168. When they had gone a distance

  169. from the home of Micah,

  170. the men who were in the houses

  171. near Micah's house were called out.

  172. And they overtook the people of Dan.

  173. And they shouted to the people of Dan

  174. who turned around and said to Micah,

  175. What is the matter with you

  176. that you come with such a company?

  177. And he said,

  178. You take my gods that I made

  179. and the priest and go away

  180. and what have I left?

  181. How then do you ask me

  182. what is the matter with you?

  183. And the people of Dan said to him,

  184. Do not let your voice be heard among us,

  185. lest angry fellows fall upon you

  186. and you lose your life

  187. with the lives of your household.

  188. Then the people of Dan went their way.

  189. And when Micah saw

  190. that they were too strong for him,

  191. he turned and went back to his home.

  192. Verse 27,

  193. But the people of Dan

  194. took what Micah had made

  195. and the priest who belonged to him.

  196. And they came to Laish

  197. to a people quiet and unsuspecting

  198. and struck them with the edge of the sword

  199. and burned the city with fire.

  200. And there was no deliverer

  201. because it was far from Sidon

  202. and they had no dealings with anyone.

  203. It was in the valley

  204. that belongs to Beth Rehob.

  205. Then they rebuilt the city

  206. and lived in it.

  207. And they named the city Dan

  208. after the name of Dan,

  209. their ancestor,

  210. who was born to Israel.

  211. But the name of the city

  212. was Laish at the first.

  213. And the people of Dan

  214. set up the carved image for themselves.

  215. And Jonathan,

  216. the son of Gershom,

  217. son of Moses,

  218. and his sons

  219. were priests

  220. to the tribe of the Danites

  221. until the day

  222. of the captivity of the land.

  223. So they set up Micah's carved image

  224. that he made

  225. as long as the house of God

  226. was at Shiloh.

  227. I invite you to pray with me

  228. as we come to this portion

  229. of God's word.

  230. Our Father in heaven,

  231. we do thank you again

  232. for your word

  233. that you

  234. create,

  235. nurture,

  236. sustain life

  237. by your word.

  238. You did it

  239. in the creation of the world.

  240. And you do it

  241. through the scriptures

  242. that you've given to us.

  243. And so we ask this morning

  244. that you would give us life.

  245. That you would use

  246. this passage

  247. to encourage

  248. and to challenge us.

  249. You'd use it

  250. to change us

  251. and to grow us.

  252. And most of all,

  253. you'd use it

  254. to show us, Jesus,

  255. that we would see

  256. our great need

  257. and we would also see

  258. his great mercy.

  259. You would use it

  260. to make us

  261. more and more like him.

  262. We ask these things

  263. in his mighty name.

  264. Amen.

  265. As we begin

  266. chapter 18,

  267. we are confronted

  268. immediately

  269. with a major problem.

  270. The tribe of Dan,

  271. which is one of the 12 tribes

  272. of Israel,

  273. it turns out,

  274. actually have no territory.

  275. They do not have

  276. the land

  277. that they need

  278. and that raises

  279. the question of why not.

  280. Well, that,

  281. to understand,

  282. would take us

  283. all the way

  284. back to chapter 1.

  285. You might remember

  286. back in chapter 1,

  287. we heard the story

  288. of how the different tribes

  289. were coming in

  290. and taking the territory

  291. that belonged to them.

  292. And yet,

  293. part of the warning

  294. at the very beginning

  295. of the book of Judges,

  296. part of the foreshadowing

  297. was that we saw

  298. that they were not

  299. actually able

  300. to take the land

  301. that God had given them.

  302. You may also remember

  303. one commentator said this,

  304. that they said

  305. we could not take the land

  306. and God in chapter 1

  307. basically says,

  308. no,

  309. you would not

  310. take the land.

  311. You were not faithful.

  312. You did not believe

  313. the promises

  314. that I gave to you.

  315. And so this failure

  316. that we encounter

  317. right here at the beginning

  318. is this lack

  319. of faith and obedience.

  320. The lack of obedience

  321. from the tribe of Dan

  322. is catching up with them.

  323. In fact,

  324. there's a problem

  325. that's not explicit

  326. in the passage

  327. but that we know

  328. from geography

  329. which is that

  330. they are squeezed in.

  331. The tribe of Dan

  332. does not have

  333. what they need

  334. in terms of land

  335. to grow crops,

  336. to sustain themselves,

  337. and to feed themselves.

  338. And so their disobedience

  339. has really,

  340. in a sense,

  341. put them into a corner.

  342. They don't have the land

  343. they actually need

  344. to survive.

  345. And so that,

  346. rather than obedience

  347. and faith

  348. and trust in God,

  349. is what's pushing them

  350. to finally do

  351. what they should have done

  352. a long time ago.

  353. It makes sense then

  354. that this is the land

  355. that they take.

  356. We're told in verse 10,

  357. it is a place

  358. where there is no lack

  359. of anything

  360. that is in the earth.

  361. So they're living,

  362. not enough land,

  363. not the right land.

  364. Suddenly they find

  365. the spies

  366. that go out

  367. the greatest land.

  368. Now we're getting

  369. ahead of ourselves here though.

  370. This story breaks up

  371. into several parts

  372. and the first couple parts

  373. are these two expeditions.

  374. The first expedition

  375. is the expedition

  376. of five men

  377. who are meant to spy.

  378. And then after that

  379. there's an expedition

  380. of 600 men

  381. who are meant to capture.

  382. And so we find first

  383. the spying expedition

  384. in verse 2.

  385. These five men

  386. are sent out

  387. and what is it

  388. that they discover

  389. very quickly?

  390. Well in verse 4

  391. they run across

  392. our character

  393. that we met

  394. in the last chapter,

  395. Micah.

  396. And you may remember

  397. I told you

  398. Micah was looking

  399. for work.

  400. He had a LinkedIn profile.

  401. He had changed

  402. his profile picture

  403. and it said

  404. open to work

  405. because he wanted

  406. everyone to make sure

  407. that they knew

  408. that he was a Levite

  409. and he was ready

  410. to serve

  411. in whatever way possible.

  412. Of course that's

  413. what he's excited

  414. to tell them.

  415. He shares with them

  416. in verse 4

  417. how good this is.

  418. This is how Micah

  419. dealt with me.

  420. He has hired me

  421. and I have become

  422. a priest.

  423. In other words

  424. wow look at me guys

  425. I got the job

  426. I have the income

  427. I made the deal.

  428. Notice what Micah

  429. doesn't say.

  430. He doesn't say

  431. wow I am so grateful

  432. that God has given me

  433. this position

  434. so I can serve him

  435. and teach people his ways.

  436. Now we already know

  437. from last chapter

  438. Micah is not really

  439. that interested

  440. in teaching people

  441. God's ways.

  442. He's someone

  443. who has figured out

  444. how to use

  445. religious service

  446. simply for

  447. an income.

  448. That's a foreshadowing

  449. in and of itself

  450. of what's going to happen

  451. to Micah next.

  452. If he's interested

  453. in one good job

  454. will he not

  455. of course

  456. be interested

  457. in an even better job?

  458. And that's what's

  459. going to be

  460. offered to him.

  461. Knowing that he's

  462. a Levite

  463. of course they want

  464. a word from the Lord

  465. verses 5 and 6

  466. to know if their journey

  467. is going to be successful.

  468. And this is actually

  469. one of the stranger

  470. parts of this passage.

  471. We don't hear

  472. that Micah actually

  473. inquires of the Lord.

  474. There's no indication

  475. that this is a true word

  476. that he gives them.

  477. Even more than that

  478. it's extremely ambiguous.

  479. Look with me

  480. at verse 6.

  481. He says

  482. the journey

  483. on which you go

  484. is under the eye

  485. of the Lord.

  486. Which means what?

  487. I don't know.

  488. Yeah, God's aware

  489. of your journey.

  490. It's under his eye.

  491. It could be good.

  492. It could be bad.

  493. I don't know.

  494. He's in a sense

  495. a wise false teacher.

  496. He gives them

  497. something that could

  498. go in multiple directions.

  499. These men though

  500. looking for God's favor

  501. hear exactly

  502. what they want

  503. to hear.

  504. So they go out.

  505. They spy out the land.

  506. Verses 7 through 10

  507. they see,

  508. hey, this is a place

  509. that is ripe

  510. for the picking.

  511. It's a good land

  512. and it's an unsuspecting land.

  513. Remember later

  514. it says they took it

  515. because they were

  516. so far away

  517. from the Sidonians.

  518. They had no communication

  519. with anyone.

  520. They didn't have

  521. the allies they needed.

  522. And so the spying expedition

  523. goes extremely well.

  524. We move quickly

  525. to the conquering expedition

  526. verses 11 through 20

  527. but things very quickly

  528. get pretty strange.

  529. Verse 14,

  530. we see the scouts

  531. who have gone ahead

  532. decide to give

  533. the 600 men

  534. sort of this

  535. inside scoop.

  536. They tell them,

  537. hey, we met this guy

  538. named Micah

  539. and they say this.

  540. This is verse 14.

  541. Do you know

  542. that in these houses

  543. there are an ephod,

  544. household gods,

  545. a carved image,

  546. and a metal image?

  547. Now therefore,

  548. consider what you will do.

  549. In other words,

  550. hey guys,

  551. we just want to make sure

  552. you know

  553. there's some great things

  554. in this house.

  555. I'm not going to tell you

  556. what to do with that.

  557. You do what you want.

  558. What do we find out

  559. right away?

  560. The 600 men

  561. make a show of force

  562. outside of the house

  563. and they go ahead,

  564. they steal the idols

  565. and they take Micah

  566. as well.

  567. In fact,

  568. in verses 16 and 17 here,

  569. this is simply that.

  570. It's a show of force.

  571. The 600 men,

  572. they don't have to do

  573. any fighting.

  574. They just stand by

  575. the entrance of the house

  576. so that Micah

  577. and his people know

  578. there is no point

  579. in pushing back.

  580. This battle is over

  581. before it's begun.

  582. With the 600 men outside,

  583. the five men

  584. who are the scouts

  585. go in,

  586. they plunder the house,

  587. they get what they want.

  588. Micah should here

  589. be providing

  590. some sort of protection.

  591. We're moving forward

  592. to verses 18 through 20.

  593. But instead,

  594. they tell him,

  595. hey,

  596. keep your mouth shut.

  597. Verse 4,

  598. he's told them,

  599. wow,

  600. I have a job.

  601. Isn't this great?

  602. Verse 19,

  603. they say,

  604. wow,

  605. you know what?

  606. We'll give you

  607. a better job.

  608. Is it better for you

  609. to be a priest

  610. to the house

  611. of one man

  612. or to be a priest

  613. to a tribe

  614. and a clan

  615. in Israel?

  616. And how does Micah respond?

  617. Does he say,

  618. no,

  619. I have to remain

  620. faithful to God

  621. and his ways.

  622. Don't you realize

  623. you're breaking

  624. the eighth commandment?

  625. You're stealing things

  626. you shouldn't steal.

  627. Don't you realize

  628. God's blessing

  629. may not be with you

  630. because you haven't

  631. obeyed him?

  632. No,

  633. that's not Micah's word.

  634. Verse 20,

  635. and the priest's

  636. heart was glad.

  637. Micah has the promotion

  638. he wants.

  639. His influence,

  640. his power,

  641. perhaps his compensation

  642. are going up.

  643. Then Micah decides

  644. he's going to chase them down.

  645. This is verses 21 through 26.

  646. He quickly realizes

  647. he's outgunned

  648. and overpowered,

  649. so he heads home.

  650. Conquering expedition,

  651. they roll in

  652. to Laish,

  653. they find that

  654. it's unprotected,

  655. they conquer it,

  656. they wreck it.

  657. Very end,

  658. we have this sad note,

  659. verse 31.

  660. They set up

  661. a rival worship site

  662. to God's true

  663. worship site

  664. at Shiloh.

  665. So what do we do?

  666. What does the author

  667. of Judges

  668. want us to understand

  669. from chapter 18

  670. as we think about

  671. Micah's story,

  672. his setting up

  673. of the idols,

  674. his hiring of the Levite,

  675. and then his losing

  676. of him?

  677. Some of it,

  678. we see a similar theme

  679. to last week.

  680. Remember last week,

  681. we talked about the fact

  682. that they were full

  683. of religious show

  684. and they had no

  685. religious substance.

  686. And we see that

  687. all over again

  688. as the story continues here.

  689. They care about

  690. having a Levite,

  691. right?

  692. Just like Micah did.

  693. The men of Dan

  694. want the same thing.

  695. They don't care about

  696. the fact that maybe

  697. they're stealing

  698. a lot of things

  699. and doing some

  700. underhanded business

  701. to get there.

  702. They want to know

  703. that God is with them.

  704. It's important to them

  705. that the Levite

  706. gives them this word

  707. of success

  708. on the one hand.

  709. On the other hand,

  710. they really don't care

  711. about how crazy

  712. the stuff they're doing is.

  713. Right?

  714. Religious show,

  715. no religious substance.

  716. They end up doing

  717. what God says

  718. he hates

  719. in the name

  720. of worshiping God

  721. and honoring God.

  722. Following after God

  723. on the one hand,

  724. supposedly setting up

  725. a rival worship site

  726. on the other hand.

  727. Of course,

  728. sad here,

  729. the Levite

  730. obviously cares

  731. about money

  732. and prestige.

  733. He cares not at all

  734. for God's honor

  735. and his glory.

  736. No,

  737. he's available

  738. to the highest bidder.

  739. Whoever pays him

  740. gets his services.

  741. And so that's

  742. a repetition

  743. in a sense

  744. a continuation

  745. of the theme

  746. from last week.

  747. What's new

  748. about this week

  749. is this,

  750. Micah's idolatry

  751. finally comes

  752. home to roost.

  753. The stupidity

  754. of the creation

  755. of these idols,

  756. the fact that he made

  757. this carved image

  758. and the metal image,

  759. he has the ephod,

  760. the household gods

  761. in the shrine,

  762. the consequences

  763. of that

  764. finally come out

  765. to bear.

  766. He gets to face

  767. the music

  768. of what he's done.

  769. And just for a sake

  770. of review,

  771. we've seen this quote

  772. before,

  773. but I'm going to invite

  774. you to look at page

  775. eight of your worship guide.

  776. As we talk about idolatry,

  777. we're talking about

  778. this larger concept

  779. of what it is

  780. that we worship

  781. and love.

  782. And we're told this

  783. as a definition.

  784. Idolatry is loving

  785. anything more

  786. than Jesus Christ.

  787. Idolatry is treating

  788. anything as more

  789. important than Jesus Christ

  790. for your meaning

  791. in life,

  792. for your happiness,

  793. for your security

  794. and hope,

  795. or for your self-regard.

  796. Idolatry is looking

  797. to good things

  798. as great things.

  799. It's taking

  800. something that's good

  801. and saying,

  802. I want this to give me

  803. something that God alone

  804. can provide.

  805. I want this thing,

  806. in this case,

  807. Micah wants the idols

  808. to give him the security

  809. and success

  810. that only God

  811. can bless him with.

  812. And so we come

  813. to the most perhaps

  814. devastating statement

  815. in this entire chapter.

  816. And this perhaps

  817. is the key

  818. to chapter 18.

  819. And it's in verse 24.

  820. Micah has his idols

  821. stolen from him

  822. and he says this,

  823. You take my gods

  824. that I made

  825. and the priest

  826. and go away

  827. and what have I left?

  828. In other words,

  829. this was what was

  830. most important to me.

  831. This was where

  832. I had placed

  833. all my trust

  834. and confidence.

  835. You take this,

  836. I have nothing left.

  837. And it's his own words

  838. that reveal

  839. how tragic this is

  840. because before he says that,

  841. he already admits,

  842. my gods

  843. that I made.

  844. of course

  845. they're powerless,

  846. right?

  847. Of course

  848. they can't deliver him.

  849. Of course

  850. they can't provide

  851. hope and security.

  852. They didn't make him,

  853. he made them.

  854. So the point

  855. of chapter 18

  856. is very simple

  857. and it's this.

  858. Idols

  859. will always

  860. break

  861. your heart.

  862. Idols

  863. will always

  864. disappoint.

  865. They will

  866. never

  867. deliver

  868. on their promises.

  869. What are

  870. these gods

  871. supposed to do?

  872. They're supposed

  873. to protect Micah.

  874. What ends up

  875. happening?

  876. He is

  877. totally

  878. plundered,

  879. right?

  880. They cannot

  881. do

  882. what they

  883. promise

  884. to do.

  885. Idols

  886. may not

  887. break

  888. your heart

  889. today,

  890. right?

  891. We didn't

  892. see them

  893. breaking Micah's

  894. heart in

  895. chapter 17.

  896. Give it

  897. enough time

  898. and they

  899. will.

  900. Play

  901. the timeline

  902. out

  903. long enough

  904. and your

  905. idols

  906. will

  907. leave you

  908. high

  909. and dry.

  910. Idols

  911. will always

  912. break

  913. your heart.

  914. It's not

  915. just that

  916. Micah has

  917. lost

  918. what's

  919. most

  920. valuable

  921. to him.

  922. It's

  923. that he

  924. finally

  925. realizes

  926. what is

  927. most

  928. valuable

  929. to him

  930. is

  931. completely

  932. weak

  933. and

  934. powerless.

  935. And so

  936. there's a

  937. sense here

  938. in which

  939. the punishment

  940. fits the

  941. crime.

  942. Micah

  943. steals

  944. from his

  945. mom.

  946. Remember

  947. last chapter?

  948. What happens?

  949. Those very

  950. same things

  951. are stolen

  952. from him.

  953. Micah

  954. steals

  955. from mom.

  956. Dan

  957. steals

  958. from Micah

  959. no

  960. honor

  961. among

  962. thieves.

  963. Idolatry

  964. works like

  965. this.

  966. If you

  967. live by

  968. the sword

  969. you'll

  970. die by

  971. the sword.

  972. If you

  973. live

  974. for money

  975. you'll

  976. die by

  977. money.

  978. If you

  979. live

  980. for romance

  981. you will

  982. be

  983. devastated

  984. by romance.

  985. If you

  986. value

  987. power

  988. above

  989. all

  990. else

  991. you will

  992. be

  993. crushed

  994. by

  995. power.

  996. If you

  997. pursue

  998. comfort

  999. more

  1000. than

  1001. anything

  1002. else

  1003. you

  1004. will

  1005. find

  1006. yourself

  1007. extremely

  1008. uncomfortable.

  1009. Maybe

  1010. not

  1011. today

  1012. but

  1013. eventually

  1014. it

  1015. will

  1016. come

  1017. back.

  1018. not

  1019. saying

  1020. that we

  1021. shut

  1022. ourselves

  1023. off

  1024. to

  1025. those

  1026. things

  1027. money

  1028. and

  1029. romance

  1030. and

  1031. power

  1032. have

  1033. their

  1034. place

  1035. and

  1036. their

  1037. value

  1038. in

  1039. life

  1040. and

  1041. we

  1042. keep

  1043. them

  1044. in

  1045. the

  1046. right

  1047. place.

  1048. We

  1049. maintain

  1050. the

  1051. right

  1052. perspective.

  1053. We

  1054. know

  1055. these

  1056. are

  1057. not

  1058. the

  1059. things

  1060. that

  1061. will

  1062. save

  1063. us

  1064. and

  1065. rescue

  1066. us.

  1067. We

  1068. see

  1069. in

  1070. this

  1071. chapter

  1072. why

  1073. it

  1074. is

  1075. that

  1076. we

  1077. flee

  1078. away

  1079. from

  1080. idols.

  1081. It's

  1082. not

  1083. because

  1084. God

  1085. is

  1086. a

  1087. kill

  1088. joy.

  1089. It's

  1090. not

  1091. because

  1092. he

  1093. hates

  1094. for

  1095. his

  1096. people

  1097. to

  1098. have

  1099. fun.

  1100. It's

  1101. not

  1102. because

  1103. he

  1104. doesn't

  1105. want

  1106. them

  1107. to

  1108. enjoy

  1109. the

  1110. good

  1111. things

  1112. that

  1113. he's

  1114. brought

  1115. into

  1116. his

  1117. creation.

  1118. It

  1119. is

  1120. this.

  1121. We

  1122. flee

  1123. away

  1124. from

  1125. idols

  1126. because

  1127. that

  1128. protects

  1129. us

  1130. from

  1131. great

  1132. danger.

  1133. it

  1134. is

  1135. God

  1136. who

  1137. will

  1138. not

  1139. break

  1140. our

  1141. hearts.

  1142. You'll

  1143. see this

  1144. on

  1145. verse

  1146. 9

  1147. of

  1148. your

  1149. worship

  1150. guide

  1151. summarizing

  1152. the

  1153. warning

  1154. and the

  1155. danger

  1156. of

  1157. idols

  1158. and it

  1159. says

  1160. this

  1161. ultimately

  1162. we

  1163. pay

  1164. the

  1165. cost

  1166. of

  1167. putting

  1168. ultimate

  1169. trust

  1170. in

  1171. what

  1172. can

  1173. never

  1174. deliver

  1175. ultimate

  1176. security.

  1177. Ultimately

  1178. it seems

  1179. we never

  1180. learn

  1181. that

  1182. false

  1183. gods

  1184. never

  1185. fail

  1186. to

  1187. fail.

  1188. That

  1189. is

  1190. the

  1191. only

  1192. thing

  1193. about

  1194. a

  1195. false

  1196. god

  1197. that

  1198. you

  1199. can

  1200. depend

  1201. on.

  1202. False

  1203. gods

  1204. fail

  1205. that

  1206. is

  1207. their

  1208. only

  1209. truth.

  1210. Do you

  1211. want

  1212. life?

  1213. Worship

  1214. of the

  1215. true

  1216. God

  1217. is

  1218. the

  1219. only

  1220. safe

  1221. worship.

  1222. hope

  1223. in

  1224. the

  1225. true

  1226. God

  1227. is

  1228. the

  1229. only

  1230. hope

  1231. that

  1232. will

  1233. not

  1234. disappoint.

  1235. Security

  1236. in

  1237. the

  1238. true

  1239. God

  1240. is

  1241. the

  1242. only

  1243. one

  1244. that

  1245. will

  1246. not

  1247. fail.

  1248. Idols

  1249. will

  1250. always

  1251. break

  1252. your

  1253. heart.

  1254. I told

  1255. you that

  1256. there's

  1257. a key

  1258. verse

  1259. here in

  1260. verse

  1261. 24.

  1262. there's

  1263. another

  1264. final

  1265. gut

  1266. punch

  1267. we get

  1268. here at

  1269. the

  1270. very

  1271. end.

  1272. You

  1273. may have

  1274. noticed

  1275. that

  1276. last

  1277. chapter,

  1278. chapter

  1279. 17,

  1280. we were

  1281. told that

  1282. Micah had

  1283. a name.

  1284. It was

  1285. Micah.

  1286. We were

  1287. not told

  1288. the name

  1289. of the

  1290. Levite.

  1291. And the

  1292. author of

  1293. Judges

  1294. strategically

  1295. saves it

  1296. here for

  1297. the very

  1298. end of

  1299. the story.

  1300. Verse

  1301. 30.

  1302. Who is

  1303. this

  1304. unfaithful

  1305. Levite?

  1306. Who is

  1307. this man

  1308. who cares

  1309. about money

  1310. and power

  1311. and influence

  1312. more than

  1313. anything else?

  1314. This is

  1315. Moses'

  1316. grandson.

  1317. the

  1318. grandson

  1319. of one

  1320. of the

  1321. greatest

  1322. leaders

  1323. of God's

  1324. people.

  1325. And so

  1326. what the

  1327. author is

  1328. telling us

  1329. is this,

  1330. this is

  1331. how far

  1332. Israel

  1333. has fallen.

  1334. This is

  1335. how bad

  1336. things actually

  1337. are.

  1338. even

  1339. Moses'

  1340. grandson

  1341. has

  1342. given

  1343. in.

  1344. Even

  1345. he

  1346. has

  1347. abandoned

  1348. God's

  1349. ways.

  1350. And the

  1351. point of

  1352. all of

  1353. this is

  1354. not to

  1355. make us

  1356. discouraged

  1357. or pushed

  1358. down.

  1359. No,

  1360. it's to

  1361. drive us

  1362. to what

  1363. we saw

  1364. in verse

  1365. one.

  1366. In

  1367. those

  1368. days,

  1369. there

  1370. was no

  1371. king

  1372. in

  1373. Israel.

  1374. In

  1375. case

  1376. there

  1377. is

  1378. any

  1379. doubt,

  1380. what the

  1381. author is

  1382. trying to

  1383. tell us

  1384. is this,

  1385. Israel

  1386. needs

  1387. rescue.

  1388. And that

  1389. rescue

  1390. will not

  1391. come from

  1392. a man.

  1393. It wasn't

  1394. going to

  1395. come from

  1396. Samson.

  1397. It will

  1398. not come

  1399. from the

  1400. descendants

  1401. of Moses.

  1402. No,

  1403. Israel

  1404. needs

  1405. someone

  1406. even

  1407. greater

  1408. and more

  1409. powerful.

  1410. We might

  1411. say that

  1412. Israel

  1413. needs

  1414. a faithful

  1415. and true

  1416. king.

  1417. Israel

  1418. needs a

  1419. king who

  1420. can do

  1421. what no

  1422. human can

  1423. do,

  1424. which is

  1425. to change

  1426. the hearts

  1427. of men.

  1428. And so

  1429. once again,

  1430. judges

  1431. is pointing

  1432. us forward,

  1433. right?

  1434. This is

  1435. something that

  1436. Solomon and

  1437. David will

  1438. not be

  1439. able to

  1440. do.

  1441. What

  1442. Israel

  1443. needs is

  1444. not a

  1445. earthly

  1446. king,

  1447. but a

  1448. divine

  1449. king.

  1450. Micah

  1451. has to

  1452. look to

  1453. something

  1454. beyond

  1455. idols for

  1456. security

  1457. and blessing.

  1458. And as

  1459. we now

  1460. know the

  1461. end of

  1462. the story,

  1463. we know

  1464. that Jesus

  1465. is the

  1466. true and

  1467. greater

  1468. king.

  1469. we know

  1470. that he

  1471. is the

  1472. one and

  1473. the only

  1474. one who

  1475. can rescue

  1476. a people

  1477. that have

  1478. fallen

  1479. this far.

  1480. Last week,

  1481. we talked

  1482. about Jesus

  1483. as the

  1484. true king

  1485. who rules

  1486. by his

  1487. spirit,

  1488. right?

  1489. As he's

  1490. ascended to

  1491. the right

  1492. hand of

  1493. God the

  1494. Father,

  1495. that he's

  1496. the one

  1497. who's able

  1498. to change

  1499. the hearts

  1500. of his

  1501. people in

  1502. a way

  1503. the judges

  1504. never

  1505. could.

  1506. This

  1507. week,

  1508. we see

  1509. Jesus

  1510. is the

  1511. true king

  1512. who can

  1513. provide

  1514. what idols

  1515. can only

  1516. promise.

  1517. Jesus

  1518. is the

  1519. one who

  1520. gives his

  1521. people the

  1522. security

  1523. that they

  1524. long for.

  1525. Idols

  1526. can arouse

  1527. and entice

  1528. they can

  1529. never

  1530. fulfill.

  1531. And why

  1532. is it that

  1533. we look

  1534. to Jesus

  1535. as the

  1536. one who

  1537. gives us

  1538. those

  1539. ultimate

  1540. things?

  1541. Jim already

  1542. read it for

  1543. us this

  1544. morning.

  1545. It's on

  1546. page three

  1547. of your

  1548. worship guide.

  1549. Jesus

  1550. makes this

  1551. promise in

  1552. Matthew

  1553. chapter six

  1554. as he's

  1555. preaching the

  1556. sermon on

  1557. the mount.

  1558. He says,

  1559. therefore,

  1560. do not be

  1561. anxious.

  1562. This is

  1563. verse 31,

  1564. saying,

  1565. what shall

  1566. we eat

  1567. or what

  1568. shall we

  1569. drink

  1570. or what

  1571. shall we

  1572. wear?

  1573. For the

  1574. Gentiles,

  1575. in other

  1576. words,

  1577. the idolaters,

  1578. those who

  1579. worship carved

  1580. images and

  1581. metal images,

  1582. seek after

  1583. these things

  1584. and your

  1585. heavenly

  1586. father knows

  1587. that you

  1588. need them

  1589. all.

  1590. idols can

  1591. arouse and

  1592. entice,

  1593. they cannot

  1594. fulfill.

  1595. Jesus says

  1596. here,

  1597. I will

  1598. provide.

  1599. Look at the

  1600. birds of the

  1601. air,

  1602. they neither

  1603. sow nor

  1604. reap nor

  1605. gather into

  1606. barns,

  1607. and yet your

  1608. heavenly father

  1609. feeds them.

  1610. Are you not

  1611. of more

  1612. value than

  1613. they?

  1614. My hope

  1615. is the

  1616. true hope.

  1617. My security,

  1618. the true

  1619. security,

  1620. my provision,

  1621. the true

  1622. provision.

  1623. look to

  1624. me,

  1625. not to

  1626. what you've

  1627. made with

  1628. your hands.

  1629. And how do

  1630. we know that

  1631. Jesus' promise

  1632. to us is

  1633. true?

  1634. How do we

  1635. trust his

  1636. words here in

  1637. Matthew chapter

  1638. six?

  1639. We trust them

  1640. because we have

  1641. an even greater

  1642. promise that has

  1643. been kept.

  1644. We trust them

  1645. because we look

  1646. and we see that

  1647. Jesus came and

  1648. lived the perfect

  1649. life that we

  1650. should have

  1651. lived.

  1652. He came and

  1653. died the death

  1654. that we should

  1655. have died as a

  1656. punishment for

  1657. our sins.

  1658. He kept his

  1659. promise to

  1660. his people.

  1661. And as I've

  1662. told you many

  1663. times before,

  1664. Romans chapter

  1665. eight,

  1666. verses 31 and

  1667. 32 tell us,

  1668. hey, look,

  1669. he who gave

  1670. you his own

  1671. son, will

  1672. he not also

  1673. with him give

  1674. you all

  1675. things?

  1676. If he gave

  1677. you the great

  1678. thing, will

  1679. he not give

  1680. you the small

  1681. things?

  1682. You don't need

  1683. to look to

  1684. idols.

  1685. you can look

  1686. to him.

  1687. He's given

  1688. you ultimate

  1689. things and

  1690. give you all

  1691. things.

  1692. So we trust

  1693. him, we

  1694. follow him

  1695. above and

  1696. beyond everything

  1697. else.

  1698. Let's pray.

  1699. Our Father in

  1700. heaven, we do

  1701. praise you and

  1702. thank you

  1703. that by being

  1704. anxious, we

  1705. can't add a

  1706. single hour to

  1707. our life.

  1708. You care for

  1709. us and protect

  1710. us.

  1711. You give

  1712. what idols

  1713. can only

  1714. promise.

  1715. We ask that

  1716. you would

  1717. remind us of

  1718. that this

  1719. morning, that

  1720. you would

  1721. stir it up in

  1722. our hearts, that

  1723. we would believe

  1724. it more and

  1725. more, that we

  1726. would look to

  1727. you and you

  1728. alone as our

  1729. hope, our

  1730. comfort, our

  1731. protection, our

  1732. provision.

  1733. We ask all of

  1734. these things in

  1735. the mighty name

  1736. of Jesus Christ.

  1737. Amen.

  1738. I invite you to

  1739. stand for our

  1740. closing hymn.
