  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  4. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced that there's no one so good,

  8. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  9. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  10. We're continuing our study in the book of Judges.

  11. In fact, we're coming near to the very end of it.

  12. We just have a few Sundays left in this book,

  13. and you'll remember that the book of Judges is about a number of things.

  14. It's about the need for constant renewal and revival among God's people.

  15. It's about the need for a faithful and true king,

  16. a king who can do what no human can do,

  17. which is to change the hearts of men.

  18. It's about the power of Spirit-filled leadership,

  19. and it's about God's mercy to hard-hearted people,

  20. people like you and me.

  21. Last week, we finished chapter 18,

  22. and in finishing that chapter, we finished the story of Micah.

  23. You'll remember that his story did not end well.

  24. The people of Dan came,

  25. and they stole the idols that he had spent so much money and energy on.

  26. And not only did they steal his idols,

  27. they also hired away the Levite that he was so proud to have in his house.

  28. And so we saw that in the end,

  29. idols can't save,

  30. they can't deliver,

  31. they can't protect.

  32. In the end,

  33. idols will always break your heart.

  34. That was a story for Micah,

  35. the story for us as well,

  36. that the worship of the true God

  37. is the only safe worship.

  38. We turn now to Judges chapter 19,

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  39. which continues the downward spiral

  40. that we've been in for some time.

  41. And this chapter is arguably the most tragic,

  42. the most violent,

  43. the most gruesome story in the entire Bible.

  44. There are 66 chapters in the Bible,

  45. 39 in the Old Testament,

  46. 27 in the New Testament,

  47. and there are nearly 1,200 chapters in the Bible.

  48. And I would submit to you this morning

  49. that this chapter,

  50. of almost 1,200 chapters,

  51. is in fact the worst of all.

  52. And that's what we're told at the very end.

  53. The last verse,

  54. verse 30 of chapter 19,

  55. says this,

  56. such a thing has never happened

  57. or been seen

  58. from the day that the people of Israel

  59. came up out of the land of Egypt

  60. until this day.

  61. And so as we come to

  62. what is a tragic and gruesome story,

  63. it's important to recognize

  64. that perhaps for many of us

  65. it may stir up all sorts of things

  66. inside of us.

  67. Things that we've seen

  68. or experienced

  69. or heard about.

  70. And it may be difficult

  71. to listen to

  72. for a variety of reasons

  73. that have nothing to do

  74. with the passage itself.

  75. And so I just want to remind us

  76. as we come together,

  77. as maybe things are stirred up

  78. inside of you,

  79. that God is still with you

  80. in that moment.

  81. That His word is good.

  82. That we can trust

  83. that He'll use it.

  84. We can trust

  85. that His grace

  86. is enough.

  87. So we come now

  88. to a sober story

  89. that reminds us,

  90. shows us,

  91. warns us

  92. about what happens

  93. when everyone does

  94. what's right

  95. in their own eyes.

  96. And so with that,

  97. I invite you to turn with me

  98. to Judges chapter 19.

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  99. You can turn in your Bible,

  100. you can turn on your phone,

  101. you can turn in your worship guide.

  102. No matter where you turn,

  103. remember that this is God's word.

  104. And God tells us

  105. that His word

  106. is more precious than gold,

  107. even the finest gold,

  108. and it's sweeter than honey,

  109. even honey that comes straight

  110. from the honeycomb.

  111. And so that's why we read now

  112. Judges chapter 19,

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  113. starting in verse 1.

  114. In those days,

  115. when there was no king

  116. in Israel,

  117. a certain Levite

  118. was sojourning

  119. in the remote parts

  120. of the hill country

  121. of Ephraim,

  122. who took to himself

  123. a concubine

  124. from Bethlehem

  125. in Judah.

  126. And his concubine

  127. was unfaithful to him,

  128. and she went away

  129. from him

  130. to her father's house

  131. at Bethlehem

  132. in Judah,

  133. and was there

  134. for some four months.

  135. Then her husband arose

  136. and went after her

  137. to speak kindly to her

  138. and bring her back.

  139. He had with him

  140. his servant

  141. and a couple of donkeys,

  142. and she brought him

  143. into her father's house.

  144. And when the girl's father

  145. saw him,

  146. he came with joy

  147. to meet him.

  148. And his father-in-law,

  149. the girl's father,

  150. made him stay,

  151. and he remained

  152. with him three days.

  153. So they ate and drank

  154. and spent the night there.

  155. And on the fourth day,

  156. they arose early

  157. in the morning,

  158. and he prepared to go.

  159. But the girl's father

  160. said to his son-in-law,

  161. Strengthen your heart

  162. with a morsel of bread,

  163. and after that,

  164. you may go.

  165. Verse 6.

  166. So the two of them

  167. sat and ate

  168. and drank together.

  169. And the girl's father

  170. said to the man,

  171. Be pleased to spend the night

  172. and let your heart

  173. be merry.

  174. And when the man

  175. rose up to go,

  176. his father-in-law

  177. pressed him

  178. till he spent the night

  179. there again.

  180. And on the fifth day,

  181. he arose early

  182. in the morning

  183. to depart.

  184. And the girl's father

  185. said,

  186. Strengthen your heart

  187. and wait

  188. until the day declines.

  189. So they ate

  190. both of them.

  191. And when the man

  192. and his concubine

  193. and his servant

  194. rose up to depart

  195. his father-in-law,

  196. the girl's father

  197. said to him,

  198. Behold,

  199. now the day

  200. has waned

  201. toward evening.

  202. Please spend the night.

  203. Behold,

  204. the day draws

  205. to its close.

  206. Lodge here

  207. and let your heart

  208. be merry.

  209. And tomorrow

  210. you shall arise

  211. early in the morning

  212. for your journey

  213. and go home.

  214. Verse 10.

  215. But the man

  216. would not spend the night.

  217. He rose up

  218. and departed

  219. and arrived

  220. opposite Jebus,

  221. that is Jerusalem.

  222. He had with him

  223. a couple of saddled donkeys

  224. and his concubine

  225. was with him.

  226. When they were near Jebus,

  227. the day was nearly over

  228. and the servant

  229. said to his master,

  230. Come now,

  231. let us turn aside

  232. to the city

  233. of the Jebusites

  234. and spend the night

  235. in it.

  236. And his master

  237. said to him,

  238. We will not turn aside

  239. into the city

  240. of foreigners

  241. who do not belong

  242. to the people of Israel,

  243. but we will pass on

  244. to Gibeah.

  245. And he said

  246. to his young man,

  247. Come and let us

  248. draw near

  249. to one of these places

  250. and spend the night

  251. at Gibeah

  252. or at Ramah.

  253. So they passed on

  254. and went on their way.

  255. And the sun

  256. went down on them

  257. near Gibeah

  258. which belongs

  259. to Benjamin.

  260. And they turned aside

  261. there to go in

  262. and spend the night

  263. at Gibeah.

  264. And he went in

  265. and sat down

  266. in the open square

  267. of the city

  268. for no one

  269. took them into his house

  270. to spend the night.

  271. Verse 16,

  272. And behold,

  273. an old man

  274. was coming from his work

  275. in the field

  276. at evening.

  277. The man was from

  278. the hill country

  279. of Ephraim

  280. and he was sojourning

  281. in Gibeah.

  282. The men of the place

  283. were Benjaminites.

  284. And he lifted up

  285. his eyes

  286. and saw the traveler

  287. in the open square

  288. of the city.

  289. And the old man said,

  290. Where are you going?

  291. And where do you come from?

  292. And he said to him,

  293. We are passing

  294. from Bethlehem

  295. in Judah

  296. to the remote parts

  297. of the hill country

  298. of Ephraim

  299. from which I come.

  300. I went to Bethlehem

  301. in Judah

  302. and I am going

  303. to the house

  304. of the Lord

  305. but no one

  306. has taken me

  307. into his house.

  308. We have straw

  309. and feed

  310. for our donkeys

  311. with bread

  312. and wine

  313. for me

  314. and your female servant

  315. and the young man

  316. with your servants.

  317. There is no lack

  318. of anything.

  319. And the old man said,

  320. Peace be to you.

  321. I will care

  322. for all your wants.

  323. Only do not spend

  324. the night

  325. in the square.

  326. So he brought him

  327. into his house

  328. and gave the donkeys

  329. feed

  330. and they washed

  331. their feet

  332. and ate

  333. and drank.

  334. Verse 22.

  335. As they were making

  336. their hearts merry,

  337. behold the men

  338. of the city,

  339. worthless fellows,

  340. surrounded the house

  341. beating on the door

  342. and they said

  343. to the old man,

  344. the master of the house,

  345. bring out the man

  346. who came into your house

  347. that we may know him.

  348. And the man,

  349. the master of the house

  350. went out to them

  351. and said to them,

  352. No, my brothers,

  353. do not act so wickedly.

  354. Since this man

  355. has come into my house,

  356. do not do this vile thing.

  357. Behold,

  358. here are my virgin daughter

  359. and his concubine.

  360. Let me bring them out now.

  361. Now,

  362. violate them

  363. and do with them

  364. what seems good to you.

  365. But against this man

  366. do not do this outrageous thing.

  367. But the men

  368. would not listen to him.

  369. So the man seized his concubine

  370. and made her go out to them.

  371. And they knew her

  372. and abused her

  373. all night

  374. until the morning.

  375. And as the dawn began to break,

  376. they let her go.

  377. And as morning appeared,

  378. the woman came

  379. and fell down

  380. at the door

  381. of the man's house

  382. where her master was

  383. until it was light.

  384. Verse 27.

  385. And her master

  386. rose up in the morning

  387. and when he opened

  388. the doors of the house

  389. and went out

  390. to go on his way,

  391. behold,

  392. there was his concubine

  393. lying at the door

  394. of the house

  395. with her hands

  396. on the threshold.

  397. He said to her,

  398. Get up,

  399. let us be going.

  400. But there was no answer.

  401. Then he put her

  402. on the donkey

  403. and the man rose up

  404. and went away

  405. to his home.

  406. And when he entered

  407. his house,

  408. he took a knife

  409. and taking hold

  410. of his concubine,

  411. he divided her

  412. limb by limb

  413. into twelve pieces

  414. and sent her

  415. throughout all

  416. the territory

  417. of Israel.

  418. And all who saw

  419. it said,

  420. Such a thing

  421. has never happened

  422. or been seen

  423. from the day

  424. that the people

  425. of Israel

  426. came up

  427. out of the land

  428. of Egypt

  429. until this day.

  430. Consider it,

  431. take counsel,

  432. and speak.

  433. I invite you

  434. to pray with me

  435. as we come

  436. to this portion

  437. of God's word.

  438. Our Father in heaven,

  439. we do praise you

  440. and thank you

  441. that your word

  442. is good

  443. and good for us,

  444. that it's for our good

  445. and for your glory.

  446. And we ask

  447. that you would help us

  448. this morning

  449. as we come

  450. to an especially

  451. challenging passage,

  452. that you remind us

  453. of your presence

  454. with us,

  455. you encourage us

  456. with your love

  457. for what's right

  458. and just,

  459. you'd use this passage

  460. to challenge us,

  461. to encourage us.

  462. Most of all,

  463. you'd remind us

  464. of Jesus,

  465. that we would see him

  466. for who he is.

  467. We'd know his mercy

  468. and his grace

  469. and his love,

  470. that we would not do

  471. what's right

  472. in our own eyes,

  473. but that we would

  474. follow him

  475. and trust him

  476. as our king.

  477. We ask these things

  478. in his mighty name.

  479. Amen.

  480. Amen.

  481. You may notice

  482. some similarities

  483. from last week

  484. as we start out

  485. once again

  486. with a story

  487. about a Levite,

  488. a different Levite

  489. than the one we saw

  490. in chapters 17 and 18.

  491. And we find out

  492. immediately

  493. that this Levite

  494. takes a concubine

  495. to himself.

  496. In verse 2,

  497. we find out

  498. that the concubine,

  499. as we're told,

  500. is unfaithful to him.

  501. It's unclear,

  502. however,

  503. what exactly

  504. that means.

  505. It could mean

  506. that she was

  507. with another man.

  508. It could simply mean

  509. that she went away

  510. from him.

  511. That could be

  512. what it means

  513. for her to be unfaithful,

  514. that she left

  515. to go back

  516. to her father's house.

  517. Regardless of what's happening,

  518. we see in verses 2 and 3,

  519. there's a time

  520. that elapsed

  521. of four months

  522. and then finally

  523. this man decides,

  524. hey,

  525. it's time for me

  526. to go and pursue

  527. this woman

  528. to bring her back

  529. so she's no longer

  530. at her father's house.

  531. Then we counter

  532. this moment,

  533. verses 4 through 10,

  534. there is this

  535. arm-wrestling match

  536. between the husband,

  537. the Levite,

  538. and his father-in-law

  539. about how long

  540. exactly he's going

  541. to stay.

  542. He's pressed

  543. over and over again

  544. just to stay

  545. another day,

  546. enjoy another meal

  547. with us.

  548. And I don't want you

  549. to miss the details here.

  550. In verse 4,

  551. we're told that

  552. this father-in-law

  553. has great joy

  554. that this Levite

  555. has finally

  556. come back to him.

  557. We're not told

  558. how the concubine

  559. feels about the fact

  560. that he's come back.

  561. There's a deafening

  562. silence there.

  563. Verses 9 through 10

  564. become significant

  565. because in all of this

  566. pressure and negotiation

  567. about how long

  568. he's going to stay

  569. at their house,

  570. when he finally

  571. has to draw a boundary

  572. and say,

  573. you know what,

  574. we have to move on,

  575. it doesn't happen

  576. until the evening.

  577. It is less than ideal

  578. that he's traveling

  579. at this time.

  580. It's going to end up

  581. putting him

  582. in a bad position

  583. later on.

  584. And so he

  585. and his gang,

  586. his troop,

  587. decide to move out.

  588. It's time to continue

  589. towards their destination.

  590. And it makes sense

  591. for them,

  592. especially since

  593. it's so late

  594. in the day,

  595. to stop at this

  596. city of Jebus,

  597. which is going to later

  598. become the city

  599. of Jerusalem.

  600. But the Levite says,

  601. look, I don't want

  602. to stay here.

  603. This is the land

  604. of foreigners.

  605. Let's go on

  606. a little bit further

  607. so that we can be

  608. with God's people.

  609. Let's go to Gibeah

  610. or Ramah.

  611. Why?

  612. Well, the assumption

  613. here is that

  614. if they go

  615. and they stay

  616. with Israelites,

  617. they are going

  618. to receive

  619. the hospitality,

  620. the welcome,

  621. the safety

  622. that's not going

  623. to be available

  624. in a Canaanite city.

  625. Of course,

  626. the Canaanites

  627. are crazy, right?

  628. That's where something

  629. bad might happen.

  630. Let's go to where

  631. it's safe.

  632. Let's travel

  633. just a little bit more

  634. so we can be

  635. with our own people.

  636. We can feel

  637. a little bit

  638. of a shiver here

  639. with him

  640. in verse 14.

  641. They're arriving

  642. at this city

  643. as the sun

  644. is going down.

  645. Again,

  646. there's a lack

  647. of wisdom here.

  648. It's not strategic.

  649. The ideal situation

  650. would be for them

  651. to arrive

  652. when the sun

  653. is out, right?

  654. They're going

  655. to have plenty

  656. of time

  657. to settle

  658. themselves,

  659. find a place

  660. of safety,

  661. identify a good

  662. host.

  663. And it's here

  664. in the next verse

  665. that this story

  666. takes an ominous

  667. turn.

  668. He doesn't go

  669. to Jebus.

  670. That's where

  671. the Canaanites

  672. live.

  673. He goes to

  674. Gibeah.

  675. That's where

  676. the Israelites

  677. are.

  678. And yet,

  679. he went in

  680. and sat down

  681. in the open

  682. square of the city

  683. for no one

  684. took them

  685. into his house

  686. to spend

  687. the night.

  688. So we know

  689. something's off.

  690. This is not

  691. playing out

  692. the way

  693. that the Levite

  694. had planned.

  695. He tells the man

  696. who comes up later

  697. the same thing.

  698. Verse 18,

  699. no one has taken me

  700. into his house.

  701. And it's scandalous.

  702. It's not just scandalous

  703. that no one

  704. has taken him in.

  705. It's even worse

  706. than that.

  707. Verse 19,

  708. he says,

  709. look,

  710. we even brought

  711. our own food.

  712. Why would someone

  713. not want to take

  714. them in?

  715. Well,

  716. maybe they're

  717. concerned about

  718. the expense,

  719. right?

  720. Maybe they're

  721. concerned,

  722. hey,

  723. we don't actually

  724. have the resources

  725. to take care

  726. of this guest.

  727. And yet,

  728. even that is

  729. not a legitimate

  730. objection.

  731. No,

  732. we brought

  733. our own wine.

  734. We brought

  735. our own food.

  736. All we need

  737. is a safe

  738. place to stay.

  739. it's not

  740. going to cost

  741. you anything.

  742. And yet,

  743. there they are.

  744. They're trapped

  745. in the square

  746. of the city.

  747. Thankfully,

  748. this old man

  749. from the hill

  750. country of Ephraim

  751. is sojourning.

  752. He comes along

  753. and he says,

  754. look,

  755. you can stay

  756. with me.

  757. And here we hit

  758. another ominous

  759. warning.

  760. Verse 20,

  761. whatever you do,

  762. don't stay

  763. in the square.

  764. You may have

  765. thought you

  766. were in

  767. friendly territory.

  768. Nothing could

  769. be further

  770. from the case,

  771. the truth.

  772. You may have

  773. thought that

  774. you were

  775. being wise

  776. by staying

  777. away from

  778. the Canaanites,

  779. but in fact,

  780. you have walked

  781. into another

  782. dangerous

  783. situation.

  784. What begins

  785. as a couple

  786. ominous warnings

  787. turns into

  788. complete disaster

  789. for these

  790. travelers.

  791. In verses

  792. 22 and 23,

  793. these worthless

  794. men come

  795. and what

  796. they want

  797. to do

  798. is to

  799. violate

  800. this Levite

  801. who has

  802. come to

  803. visit.

  804. And instead,

  805. there's this

  806. offer made.

  807. Hey,

  808. let's compromise,

  809. guys.

  810. Verse 24,

  811. here are my

  812. virgin daughter

  813. and his

  814. concubine.

  815. How about

  816. we leave

  817. the Levite

  818. alone?

  819. You can

  820. take them

  821. instead.

  822. And don't

  823. miss the

  824. irony that's

  825. going on

  826. here.

  827. As their

  828. offer,

  829. they act

  830. as if

  831. this is

  832. completely

  833. normal.

  834. Verse 23,

  835. you know,

  836. we don't want

  837. you to be

  838. wicked.

  839. Don't

  840. do this

  841. vile

  842. thing.

  843. Verse 24,

  844. don't do

  845. this outrageous

  846. thing.

  847. Let's not

  848. do something

  849. crazy,

  850. right?

  851. Don't

  852. take the

  853. leap.

  854. Let's

  855. do something

  856. totally

  857. normal,

  858. okay?

  859. How about

  860. you just

  861. take the

  862. concubine

  863. of my

  864. daughter

  865. instead?

  866. Like,

  867. that will

  868. be a

  869. reasonable

  870. thing

  871. for you

  872. to do.

  873. And this

  874. is meant

  875. to remind

  876. us just

  877. like how

  878. ridiculous

  879. things have

  880. become

  881. in Israel.

  882. It sounds

  883. like they're

  884. not willing

  885. to compromise

  886. and so the

  887. Levite decides

  888. to take action

  889. into his own

  890. hands.

  891. You guys

  892. won't make

  893. a deal

  894. with me?

  895. Well,

  896. I'm just

  897. going to

  898. shove my

  899. concubine

  900. out the

  901. door.

  902. She can

  903. be with

  904. you.

  905. We're

  906. going to

  907. be safe

  908. inside.

  909. We'll

  910. figure this

  911. out later.

  912. What happens

  913. later needs

  914. no explanation

  915. outside of the

  916. verses themselves.

  917. Verse 25,

  918. they knew

  919. her and

  920. abused her

  921. all night

  922. until the

  923. morning.

  924. Verse 27,

  925. she staggers

  926. back with

  927. her hands

  928. on the

  929. threshold.

  930. So close,

  931. so far.

  932. You might

  933. think at

  934. this point

  935. that things

  936. couldn't get

  937. worse,

  938. but in

  939. fact they

  940. do.

  941. We begin

  942. to realize

  943. why the

  944. father-in-law

  945. experienced

  946. great joy

  947. when the

  948. Levite

  949. returned

  950. and the

  951. concubine

  952. did not.

  953. And in

  954. fact,

  955. there's a

  956. hint there.

  957. If we read

  958. between the

  959. lines,

  960. we begin

  961. to understand

  962. why it

  963. is maybe

  964. that she

  965. ran away

  966. from this

  967. Levite.

  968. Verses

  969. 27 and

  970. 28,

  971. he walks

  972. out,

  973. sees her

  974. at the

  975. door,

  976. acts as

  977. if nothing's

  978. happened,

  979. and just

  980. tells her,

  981. hey, it's

  982. time for

  983. us to

  984. get up.

  985. And then

  986. as if

  987. she has

  988. not been

  989. violated

  990. enough,

  991. he

  992. desecrates

  993. her body

  994. and cuts

  995. her into

  996. 12 different

  997. pieces.

  998. And if

  999. you're left

  1000. speechless,

  1001. that is the

  1002. point.

  1003. Verse 30

  1004. here sums

  1005. it up.

  1006. Such a

  1007. thing has

  1008. never happened

  1009. or been

  1010. seen from

  1011. the day

  1012. that the

  1013. people of

  1014. Israel

  1015. came up

  1016. out of

  1017. the land

  1018. of Egypt

  1019. until this

  1020. day.

  1021. God's

  1022. people are

  1023. worse than

  1024. the pagans.

  1025. Their

  1026. cities,

  1027. city of

  1028. Gibeah,

  1029. is more

  1030. dangerous than

  1031. Jebus.

  1032. There is

  1033. no longer

  1034. any distinction

  1035. between the

  1036. people that

  1037. God has

  1038. chosen and

  1039. the nations

  1040. around them.

  1041. And that

  1042. raises the

  1043. question for

  1044. us of what

  1045. do we do

  1046. with this

  1047. story?

  1048. Why is

  1049. such a

  1050. speechless

  1051. event in

  1052. the Bible?

  1053. Why is

  1054. Judges 21

  1055. chapters

  1056. instead of

  1057. 18 chapters?

  1058. This story,

  1059. by the way,

  1060. is going to

  1061. continue in

  1062. chapters 19

  1063. and 20.

  1064. Some of it

  1065. is a recurring

  1066. theme that

  1067. we've seen

  1068. before in

  1069. previous weeks.

  1070. There is

  1071. something upside

  1072. down about

  1073. Israel.

  1074. This man

  1075. avoids a

  1076. pagan city

  1077. thinking Israel

  1078. is safe.

  1079. Instead,

  1080. he ends up

  1081. being warned

  1082. about how

  1083. dangerous the

  1084. public square

  1085. is.

  1086. Any Israelite

  1087. should receive

  1088. welcome and

  1089. hospitality.

  1090. In fact,

  1091. not even any

  1092. Israelite,

  1093. any sojourner,

  1094. any traveler

  1095. should be

  1096. welcomed in

  1097. for safety,

  1098. and yet the

  1099. man who

  1100. brings his

  1101. own food

  1102. can't even

  1103. find a place

  1104. to stay.

  1105. And men

  1106. should be

  1107. sacrificing

  1108. themselves for

  1109. women.

  1110. They should

  1111. not have

  1112. women

  1113. sacrificed

  1114. for men.

  1115. And so

  1116. the theme

  1117. of things

  1118. being turned

  1119. inside out

  1120. in the

  1121. book of

  1122. Judges

  1123. continues.

  1124. Here in

  1125. this chapter

  1126. though,

  1127. we take

  1128. another

  1129. step.

  1130. There is

  1131. a deeper

  1132. point.

  1133. There's a

  1134. greater heart

  1135. issue at

  1136. play here.

  1137. There's a

  1138. more sober

  1139. warning.

  1140. You may

  1141. remember all

  1142. the way back

  1143. in chapter

  1144. 17,

  1145. we heard

  1146. this phrase

  1147. for the

  1148. first time,

  1149. in those

  1150. days there

  1151. was no

  1152. king in

  1153. Israel.

  1154. Everyone

  1155. did what

  1156. was right

  1157. in his

  1158. own

  1159. eyes.

  1160. And how

  1161. does this

  1162. chapter start

  1163. out?

  1164. Chapter 19,

  1165. verse 1,

  1166. in those

  1167. days when

  1168. there was

  1169. no king

  1170. in Israel.

  1171. Which is

  1172. meant to

  1173. call up for

  1174. us what

  1175. we've already

  1176. learned.

  1177. And the

  1178. author of

  1179. Judges is

  1180. telling us

  1181. this.

  1182. this is

  1183. what happens

  1184. when everyone

  1185. does what

  1186. is right

  1187. in their

  1188. own eyes.

  1189. You want

  1190. to know

  1191. what selfishness

  1192. creates?

  1193. You want

  1194. to know

  1195. what autonomy

  1196. leads to?

  1197. It doesn't

  1198. lead to a

  1199. little discomfort.

  1200. It doesn't

  1201. lead to a

  1202. few bad

  1203. moments.

  1204. No,

  1205. it leads

  1206. to the

  1207. worst

  1208. moments.

  1209. It doesn't

  1210. make society

  1211. a little

  1212. dysfunctional.

  1213. No,

  1214. it destroys

  1215. society.

  1216. It doesn't

  1217. make things

  1218. a little

  1219. twisted.

  1220. No,

  1221. it breaks

  1222. them.

  1223. This is

  1224. what happens,

  1225. Israelites,

  1226. when our

  1227. time and

  1228. our money

  1229. and our

  1230. sexuality

  1231. and our

  1232. politics

  1233. are all

  1234. about

  1235. us.

  1236. It may

  1237. not lead

  1238. to that

  1239. tomorrow.

  1240. It may

  1241. not lead

  1242. there next

  1243. week.

  1244. It will

  1245. lead there

  1246. one day.

  1247. There's an

  1248. unveiling

  1249. here.

  1250. Judges is

  1251. telling us,

  1252. look,

  1253. this is what

  1254. it really

  1255. looks like.

  1256. This is what

  1257. you're really

  1258. doing.

  1259. this is

  1260. where it

  1261. leads.

  1262. When

  1263. everything is

  1264. about me

  1265. and mine.

  1266. When people

  1267. do what is

  1268. right in their

  1269. own eyes,

  1270. when they

  1271. pursue their

  1272. own interests

  1273. above everything

  1274. else,

  1275. at the end

  1276. of the day,

  1277. people are

  1278. destroyed and

  1279. torn apart.

  1280. torn apart

  1281. and destroyed

  1282. in metaphorical

  1283. and psychological

  1284. ways.

  1285. They're

  1286. destroyed and

  1287. torn apart

  1288. in physical

  1289. ways.

  1290. Why is

  1291. there no

  1292. hospitality in

  1293. this story?

  1294. There's no

  1295. hospitality because

  1296. everyone is

  1297. doing what is

  1298. right in their

  1299. own eyes.

  1300. And what does

  1301. hospitality take?

  1302. it takes

  1303. sacrifice.

  1304. It takes

  1305. inconvenience.

  1306. It takes

  1307. resources.

  1308. Why do the

  1309. Levite and

  1310. his guest,

  1311. instead of

  1312. facing these

  1313. men head

  1314. on,

  1315. instead of

  1316. sacrificing

  1317. themselves,

  1318. why do they

  1319. offer the

  1320. women in

  1321. the story?

  1322. Because they're

  1323. going to do

  1324. what is right

  1325. in their own

  1326. eyes.

  1327. They're going

  1328. to do what's

  1329. best for

  1330. them,

  1331. which is to

  1332. maintain male

  1333. dignity above

  1334. everything else.

  1335. Why doesn't

  1336. the Levite

  1337. care about

  1338. what has

  1339. happened to

  1340. his concubine?

  1341. Because all

  1342. the Levite cares

  1343. about is what

  1344. is right in

  1345. his own

  1346. eyes.

  1347. It takes

  1348. work to

  1349. lay down

  1350. your interests

  1351. for the sake

  1352. of someone

  1353. else.

  1354. It can

  1355. hurt to

  1356. actually care

  1357. about what

  1358. happens to

  1359. people who

  1360. are close

  1361. to you.

  1362. Of course,

  1363. the narrative

  1364. hints but

  1365. never states

  1366. this is

  1367. exactly why

  1368. she ran

  1369. back to

  1370. her father's

  1371. house.

  1372. We can go

  1373. even further

  1374. back in the

  1375. book of

  1376. Judges.

  1377. This is not

  1378. the first

  1379. time we've

  1380. heard the

  1381. phrase of

  1382. doing what's

  1383. right in

  1384. our eyes.

  1385. Do you

  1386. remember where

  1387. we first

  1388. saw it?

  1389. The very

  1390. beginning of

  1391. the book

  1392. of Samson.

  1393. Remember,

  1394. he pursues a

  1395. pagan woman

  1396. despite his

  1397. parents'

  1398. warnings.

  1399. Why?

  1400. He tells

  1401. them,

  1402. get her for

  1403. me.

  1404. She is

  1405. right in

  1406. my eyes.

  1407. And of

  1408. course,

  1409. we're not

  1410. surprised then

  1411. the way

  1412. Samson's

  1413. story plays

  1414. out as he

  1415. uses and

  1416. abuses the

  1417. people around

  1418. him.

  1419. What happens

  1420. when people

  1421. do what's

  1422. right in

  1423. their own

  1424. eyes?

  1425. Well,

  1426. Judges

  1427. tells us,

  1428. shows us

  1429. who it

  1430. is that

  1431. gets to

  1432. pay the

  1433. bill.

  1434. It's the

  1435. most vulnerable

  1436. who are

  1437. most used

  1438. and abused.

  1439. Remember,

  1440. all the way

  1441. back to

  1442. Jethpah,

  1443. Jethpah

  1444. wasn't

  1445. sacrificed.

  1446. His

  1447. daughter was.

  1448. women pay

  1449. more than

  1450. men.

  1451. Children

  1452. pay more

  1453. than

  1454. adults.

  1455. That's

  1456. what's

  1457. happening in

  1458. our country

  1459. right now

  1460. in many

  1461. ways.

  1462. And

  1463. sojourners

  1464. and travelers

  1465. pay more

  1466. than permanent

  1467. residents and

  1468. citizens.

  1469. This is

  1470. where it

  1471. all ends.

  1472. This is

  1473. where human

  1474. selfishness

  1475. leads.

  1476. This is

  1477. what rebellion

  1478. against God

  1479. creates.

  1480. And Judges

  1481. wants us

  1482. to have

  1483. no

  1484. illusions.

  1485. This is

  1486. how sin

  1487. plays out

  1488. in the

  1489. world.

  1490. In fact,

  1491. the breakdown

  1492. of hospitality

  1493. and the

  1494. violence that

  1495. we see in

  1496. this passage

  1497. are two

  1498. sides

  1499. of the

  1500. same coin.

  1501. there's

  1502. a reason

  1503. these

  1504. things

  1505. go

  1506. together

  1507. because

  1508. they

  1509. actually

  1510. have

  1511. the

  1512. same

  1513. root

  1514. at

  1515. play.

  1516. You

  1517. cannot

  1518. have a

  1519. beautiful

  1520. community

  1521. and also

  1522. demand

  1523. what is

  1524. most

  1525. convenient

  1526. for you.

  1527. human

  1528. flourishing

  1529. and

  1530. autonomy

  1531. and

  1532. individualism

  1533. cannot

  1534. coexist.

  1535. exist.

  1536. You can

  1537. worship God

  1538. or you

  1539. can worship

  1540. yourself.

  1541. You can

  1542. do what

  1543. is right

  1544. in your

  1545. eyes

  1546. or you

  1547. can do

  1548. what is

  1549. right

  1550. in God's

  1551. eyes.

  1552. Remember

  1553. what we

  1554. talked about

  1555. with Micah,

  1556. Judges

    Judges 17 chapter mention

  1557. chapter 17

  1558. and 18.

  1559. The worship

  1560. of the

  1561. true God

  1562. is the

  1563. only

  1564. safe

  1565. worship.

  1566. you

  1567. cannot

  1568. have it

  1569. both

  1570. ways.

  1571. The

  1572. extremes

  1573. of this

  1574. story

  1575. reveal

  1576. something

  1577. for us

  1578. that is

  1579. also

  1580. true

  1581. about

  1582. the

  1583. normal

  1584. everyday

  1585. occurrences

  1586. of

  1587. selfishness

  1588. in

  1589. humanity.

  1590. This

  1591. is how

  1592. ugly

  1593. autonomy

  1594. is.

  1595. This

  1596. is how

  1597. gross

  1598. and

  1599. disgusting

  1600. it is

  1601. when we

  1602. insist on

  1603. our own

  1604. way above

  1605. all else.

  1606. This

  1607. is where

  1608. the human

  1609. heart

  1610. lives.

  1611. This

  1612. is how

  1613. degrading

  1614. and

  1615. dehumanizing

  1616. it all

  1617. is.

  1618. Not

  1619. just for

  1620. the world

  1621. out there

  1622. but for

  1623. the church

  1624. in here.

  1625. there is

  1626. a reason

  1627. that our

  1628. main

  1629. characters

  1630. the last

  1631. two

  1632. stories

  1633. have been

  1634. Levites.

  1635. And that

  1636. is to

  1637. remind us

  1638. even the

  1639. religious

  1640. leaders

  1641. were

  1642. corrupt.

  1643. God's

  1644. people

  1645. do not

  1646. get a

  1647. pass

  1648. as God

  1649. examines

  1650. the

  1651. selfishness

  1652. and the

  1653. self-centeredness

  1654. of this

  1655. world.

  1656. This

  1657. is not

  1658. something

  1659. where they

  1660. get to

  1661. show and

  1662. look at

  1663. the world

  1664. outside

  1665. and say

  1666. man

  1667. isn't

  1668. it

  1669. really

  1670. bad

  1671. out

  1672. there.

  1673. No

  1674. judges

  1675. is pushing

  1676. the reader

  1677. the Christian

  1678. reader to

  1679. say man

  1680. and it's

  1681. also bad

  1682. in here.

  1683. It may

  1684. not be the

  1685. same in

  1686. degree

  1687. it is the

  1688. same

  1689. in kind.

  1690. Now you

  1691. might say

  1692. wow that

  1693. sounds really

  1694. extreme.

  1695. Aren't you

  1696. exaggerating a

  1697. little bit

  1698. right?

  1699. This is an

  1700. extreme story

  1701. of course

  1702. this is not

  1703. what is

  1704. happening

  1705. in our

  1706. lives

  1707. our world

  1708. day to

  1709. day.

  1710. and I

  1711. would

  1712. submit to

  1713. you that

  1714. if that's

  1715. what you

  1716. think

  1717. your eyes

  1718. are not

  1719. open.

  1720. These

  1721. extremes

  1722. play out

  1723. in our

  1724. world

  1725. day after

  1726. day.

  1727. They play

  1728. out in

  1729. geopolitical

  1730. situations

  1731. that are

  1732. happening

  1733. right now.

  1734. They play

  1735. out day

  1736. by day

  1737. in a

  1738. sex

  1739. industry

  1740. that

  1741. pretends

  1742. that things

  1743. are legal

  1744. and consensual.

  1745. they play

  1746. out in

  1747. less extreme

  1748. ways

  1749. every day

  1750. in the

  1751. indignities

  1752. that we

  1753. impose on

  1754. others

  1755. and we

  1756. experience

  1757. ourselves

  1758. when we

  1759. insist

  1760. on what's

  1761. right for

  1762. us.

  1763. That our

  1764. convenience

  1765. is what

  1766. matters more

  1767. than anything

  1768. else.

  1769. Remember

  1770. Judges is

  1771. about the

  1772. need for

  1773. constant

  1774. renewal

  1775. and revival

  1776. among God's

  1777. people.

  1778. It's about

  1779. the need

  1780. for a

  1781. true

  1782. and faithful

  1783. king.

  1784. A king

  1785. who can

  1786. do what

  1787. no human

  1788. can do

  1789. which is

  1790. to change

  1791. the hearts

  1792. of men.

  1793. Look with

  1794. me on

  1795. page 10

  1796. of your

  1797. worship

  1798. guide.

  1799. It says

  1800. this,

  1801. from the

  1802. Garden of

  1803. Eden

  1804. humanity's

  1805. fundamental

  1806. rebellion

  1807. against God

  1808. has been

  1809. a rebellion

  1810. of autonomy.

  1811. Adam

  1812. and Eve

  1813. were given

  1814. a clear

  1815. law

  1816. and chose

  1817. to become

  1818. a law

  1819. unto

  1820. themselves.

  1821. The

  1822. history

  1823. of humanity

  1824. has followed

  1825. this

  1826. example.

  1827. And so

  1828. once again

  1829. Judges pushes

  1830. us,

  1831. reminds us,

  1832. shows us

  1833. how extreme

  1834. the problem

  1835. is so that

  1836. we understand

  1837. how powerful

  1838. the solution

  1839. must be.

  1840. There is

  1841. only

  1842. one

  1843. way

  1844. out.

  1845. There is

  1846. only one

  1847. solution

  1848. to the

  1849. selfishness

  1850. and self-centeredness

  1851. of the

  1852. world,

  1853. not only

  1854. the world

  1855. out there,

  1856. but the

  1857. world

  1858. in here.

  1859. The

  1860. opposite

  1861. of doing

  1862. what's

  1863. right in

  1864. your own

  1865. eyes

  1866. is

  1867. following

  1868. and trusting

  1869. and obeying

  1870. Jesus

  1871. as king.

  1872. remember,

  1873. there are

  1874. only

  1875. two

  1876. choices.

  1877. We talked

  1878. about this

  1879. in the

  1880. gospel of

  1881. Mark,

  1882. Mark chapter

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  1883. 8.

  1884. Jesus

  1885. says,

  1886. who do

  1887. you say

  1888. that I

  1889. am?

  1890. Am I

  1891. the king

  1892. or not?

  1893. There are

  1894. two ways

  1895. that you

  1896. can take

  1897. this.

  1898. You can

  1899. follow

  1900. and obey

  1901. me.

  1902. You can

  1903. do what's

  1904. right in

  1905. your own

  1906. eyes.

  1907. One

  1908. will end

  1909. in joy,

  1910. the other

  1911. ends

  1912. in tragedy.

  1913. There's

  1914. only one

  1915. power

  1916. strong

  1917. enough

  1918. to save

  1919. the world

  1920. from itself.

  1921. We see

  1922. in Judges

    Judges 19 chapter mention

  1923. chapter 19

  1924. that the

  1925. powerful

  1926. sacrifice

  1927. the weak.

  1928. When

  1929. Jesus,

  1930. the true

  1931. king,

  1932. comes,

  1933. we see

  1934. the powerful

  1935. being sacrificed

  1936. for the

  1937. weak.

  1938. That's

  1939. the hope

  1940. of Israel

  1941. in this

  1942. passage.

  1943. Verse 1,

  1944. there was no

  1945. king in

  1946. Israel.

  1947. Things will

  1948. not change

  1949. until there's

  1950. the true

  1951. king in

  1952. Israel.

  1953. Things will

  1954. not change

  1955. until there

  1956. is one

  1957. strong enough

  1958. to save

  1959. the world

  1960. from itself.

  1961. So what

  1962. do we do?

  1963. We bow

  1964. before the

  1965. true king

  1966. who never

  1967. did what

  1968. was right

  1969. in his

  1970. own eyes.

  1971. We choose

  1972. him and

  1973. his ways

  1974. over our

  1975. own

  1976. individualism

  1977. and autonomy.

  1978. We trust

  1979. in him.

  1980. We wait

  1981. for him.

  1982. We hope

  1983. for him.

  1984. We've

  1985. never had

  1986. a communion

  1987. hymn

  1988. before.

  1989. That's a

  1990. hymn of

  1991. lament.

  1992. But we're

  1993. going to

  1994. do it

  1995. today.

  1996. You can

  1997. look on

  1998. verse 11

  1999. of your

  2000. worship guide.

  2001. This is a

  2002. song grieving

  2003. the brokenness

  2004. of the world

  2005. and looking

  2006. forward to

  2007. what is to

  2008. come.

  2009. And what

  2010. does it

  2011. tell us?

  2012. There's a

  2013. table coming

  2014. where the

  2015. poor are

  2016. not going

  2017. to be

  2018. marginalized

  2019. and sacrificed

  2020. for the

  2021. sake of

  2022. the

  2023. powerful.

  2024. No,

  2025. the poor

  2026. are honored

  2027. guests.

  2028. The weary

  2029. wanderers are

  2030. not going

  2031. to have to

  2032. worry about

  2033. what's going

  2034. to happen

  2035. in the

  2036. square of

  2037. the city.

  2038. No,

  2039. they're going

  2040. to come

  2041. in and

  2042. find rest.

  2043. People are

  2044. not going

  2045. to be seeking

  2046. what's right

  2047. in their

  2048. own eyes.

  2049. No,

  2050. they're going

  2051. to have a

  2052. chorus where

  2053. all voices

  2054. join as

  2055. one in

  2056. songs of

  2057. celebration

  2058. that all

  2059. our wars

  2060. are done.

  2061. They have

  2062. told us of

  2063. a city where

  2064. all death

  2065. will be

  2066. undone and

  2067. all our

  2068. tearful mourning

  2069. gives way to

  2070. healing song.

  2071. That's our

  2072. hope and that's

  2073. our only hope

  2074. and it is

  2075. true because

  2076. of Jesus.

  2077. Let's pray.

  2078. our father

  2079. in heaven,

  2080. we do

  2081. praise you

  2082. and thank

  2083. you that

  2084. your word

  2085. challenges

  2086. us,

  2087. it clarifies

  2088. things for

  2089. us and

  2090. gives us

  2091. great hope.

  2092. We ask

  2093. that you

  2094. would remind

  2095. us of both

  2096. things.

  2097. You'd remind

  2098. us of the

  2099. darkness and

  2100. brokenness of

  2101. the world

  2102. and our

  2103. own role

  2104. and complicity

  2105. in it.

  2106. You'd also

  2107. remind us of

  2108. the great hope

  2109. that we have

  2110. in Jesus

  2111. Christ,

  2112. the one who

  2113. did not do

  2114. what was right

  2115. in his own

  2116. eyes,

  2117. but came

  2118. to redeem

  2119. and save

  2120. and rescue

  2121. his people.

  2122. We ask

  2123. that our

  2124. hope and
