  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here.

  4. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  9. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Romans that we started just last week.

  10. And you'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter.

  11. It's a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  12. And the book of Romans is called Romans for a very simple reason,

  13. which is that it is written to the churches that exist in the city of Rome.

  14. It is about fundamentally the gospel, the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  15. And Paul's hope is that those who receive this letter,

  16. the original recipients primarily and us secondarily,

  17. would be established in the gospel.

  18. In fact, he makes this explicit in verse 11, which we will get to before too long.

  19. Now, there are many applications that we'll see throughout this book,

  20. and all of them ultimately are going to come back to the gospel.

  21. There will be many spokes that will center over and over back to the hub,

  22. which is the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  23. In those applications, Paul has this special focus on the mission and the unity of the church.

  24. As I told you last week, as you see that we are moving very slowly, fear not.

  25. We will, in fact, speed up.

  26. But as we're here at the introduction, it is, in fact, hard to go fast

  27. because Paul lays out so many different things in these first seven verses.

  28. He gives us some of the primary themes of the book.

  29. Last week, we looked at verse 1, and we saw primarily two things.

  30. First, that Christians live for the Lord,

  31. that it is our first and our only safe commitment.

  32. And that's because the Lord is the only one who loves us more than we love ourselves.

  33. He's the only one who fully knows what's best for us.

  34. We also saw that all of us are called to be set apart for the work that God has given for us,

  35. that there are things He's chosen for us from before the foundation of the world,

  36. and He's prepared us for those things.

  37. And we're going to move forward this morning in verses 2 through 4,

  38. and we're going to see outlined for us part of the hope of the gospel.

  39. And so it's with that that I invite you to turn with me to God's Word,

  40. and you can turn in your Bible, you can turn on your phone,

  41. you can turn in your worship guide.

  42. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  43. God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  44. and it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  45. And so that's why we read now Romans 1, starting at verse 1.

  46. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God,

  47. which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures,

  48. concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh,

  49. and was declared to be the Son of God in power,

  50. according to the Spirit of holiness,

  51. by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord.

  52. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  53. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you and praise you

  54. that we don't live in a world where we're at the mercy of the latest man or woman

  55. with money or power or influence,

  56. but instead your Son and our Savior, our Lord Jesus, is the King of this world.

  57. We ask that you would show us him and his glory again this morning,

  58. and that you would grow our love, our affection, our joy,

  59. our reverence and awe for him, our obedience to him.

  60. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  61. And we're picking up this week in verse 2 of chapter 1,

  62. and I read verse 1 for you simply for context.

  63. As we begin verse 2, we're told something right away,

  64. which he promised beforehand.

  65. So there is something that we're meant to be looking for here,

  66. a promise that was made a long time ago.

  67. And to find out what that promise is,

  68. we simply have to look back to what we saw last week in verse 1.

  69. The promise that was made beforehand is the gospel of God.

  70. So we see that as we look back to verse 1.

  71. As we look forward to verse 3,

  72. we then understand more what the gospel is about.

  73. It is concerning his Son.

  74. Jumping back to verse 2, where did he promise this?

  75. Well, he promised it through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures.

  76. And so as we return to Paul's introduction in this letter,

  77. one of his longest introductions in all of the letters that he writes to the churches,

  78. he begins here with this very simple point.

  79. Jesus fulfills the promises of the Old Testament.

  80. Jesus comes and makes true everything that we were told would happen

  81. in the 39 books that come before the New Testament.

  82. Now, you might think to yourself,

  83. man, that's pretty neat.

  84. Also, why in the world should I care?

  85. Jesus is here, right?

  86. He has come.

  87. Why does it matter whether he has or has not

  88. fulfilled some sort of promise that has come beforehand?

  89. In fact, many people think just that.

  90. They think the Old Testament, that's irrelevant.

  91. There are pastors and teachers around today

  92. who will tell you that very thing.

  93. You know, we just mostly need to focus,

  94. maybe we exclusively need to focus on the New Testament.

  95. We don't need to worry about what's come before.

  96. Paul here seems to have a very different opinion.

  97. For him, it appears to be extremely important.

  98. And the answer to that question, why does it matter,

  99. is something we've already read.

  100. Now, Britt read for us Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  101. which sets out the tension and the problem

  102. that the rest of the scriptures seek to answer.

  103. Remember what we read in Genesis chapter 3?

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  104. There's this curse that comes on the world

  105. because of Adam and Eve's disobedience

  106. to what God has commanded them.

  107. And we see a variety of curses.

  108. Verse 16 of Genesis 3,

  109. the woman is going to experience pain in childbirth

  110. and disunity in marriage.

  111. Verse 17, the man is going to experience futility in his work.

  112. Of course, there's a sense in which, right,

  113. these cross over.

  114. Women also experience futility in their work.

  115. Fathers will also experience pain in raising children.

  116. And so this is the point at which paradise is broken.

  117. The perfect fellowship that humanity experienced with God

  118. has come to an end.

  119. There's disunity rather than unity.

  120. There's disconnection rather than connection.

  121. Thankfully, though, that's not the only thing we saw in Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  122. If you go back before the curse is given to the woman and the man,

  123. there's a curse put on the snake in verse 15.

  124. God addresses the serpent and says this,

  125. I will put enmity between you and the woman

  126. and between your offspring and her offspring.

  127. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel.

  128. In other words,

  129. evil has been introduced into the experience of humanity,

  130. but, and that's not the end of the story.

  131. There is one coming who will crush the head of the serpent.

  132. There will come a time when the curse will be reversed.

  133. A moment will arrive when Adam and Eve

  134. and their sons and daughters

  135. no longer suffer the consequences of sin.

  136. So why does it matter

  137. that Jesus fulfills the promises of the Old Testament?

  138. It matters

  139. because he is the one who fulfills

  140. the promise of Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  141. that the serpent's head will be crushed.

  142. that we will finally be able to return to Eden.

  143. Whether you're familiar with the Old Testament or not,

  144. whether you care about the prophets who wrote it or not,

  145. if you are a human and you live in this world

  146. and you are honest with yourself,

  147. you long to return to Eden.

  148. You long for the curse to be undone.

  149. You long for the serpent's head to be crushed.

  150. And you feel it not just in moments

  151. when we read passages from the Bible together.

  152. You feel it when you have that longing

  153. to experience only connection

  154. and never disunity with others.

  155. You feel it

  156. when you look for healing

  157. spiritually or emotionally or physically.

  158. you feel that longing

  159. when you look in the mirror.

  160. And you wish that you could only feel good

  161. about yourself and your body.

  162. You feel it as you experience the grief and loss

  163. that comes as your body ages

  164. and your powers fade and wane.

  165. And you feel it as you long for the evil

  166. in your own heart

  167. to be wiped out once and for all.

  168. And that longing that you feel

  169. is a longing that's been felt

  170. ever since Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  171. And Paul here comes to say,

  172. Jesus is the one

  173. that makes the promise come true.

  174. Jesus is the one

  175. who makes it possible

  176. to return to Eden.

  177. In his book,

  178. Mere Christianity,

  179. C.S. Lewis says this,

  180. If I find in myself a desire

  181. which no experience

  182. in this world can satisfy,

  183. the most probable explanation

  184. is that I was made

  185. for another world.

  186. And if you're honest,

  187. you can feel that you were made

  188. for another world.

  189. You may try to hide it

  190. with consumption

  191. and busyness

  192. and pleasure.

  193. And at the end of the day,

  194. it's still there.

  195. And so here again,

  196. remember I told you,

  197. when it comes to the book of Romans,

  198. we're going to have many spokes

  199. and those spokes

  200. will always come back

  201. to the hub of the gospel.

  202. And here,

  203. right at the very beginning,

  204. verse 2,

  205. we're back to the hub again.

  206. Jesus is the one

  207. who resolves

  208. the tension of humanity.

  209. Jesus is the one

  210. who allows

  211. God's people

  212. to return to Eden.

  213. Jesus is the one

  214. who makes that longing

  215. not simply a longing,

  216. but something real

  217. and full

  218. and complete.

  219. There's a theologian

  220. named Bill Wilder

  221. who describes the story

  222. of the Old Testament

  223. this way.

  224. He says,

  225. it is a story

  226. in which God's people

  227. have to leave

  228. God's presence

  229. in God's land.

  230. They're cast out of Eden,

  231. right?

  232. And so the question

  233. that is attempted

  234. to be answered

  235. throughout the rest

  236. of the Bible

  237. is simply this,

  238. how will God's people

  239. return to God's land

  240. in God's presence?

  241. How is it

  242. that God's people,

  243. his family,

  244. will experience

  245. Eden

  246. once again?

  247. The answer

  248. is Jesus.

  249. because he is the one

  250. who fulfills

  251. what was promised

  252. beforehand

  253. through his prophets

  254. in the Holy Scriptures.

  255. He is the one

  256. who makes all things right.

  257. He's the one

  258. who comes to crush

  259. the head of the serpent.

  260. He's the one

  261. who brings God's people

  262. back to God's land

  263. in God's presence.

  264. You'll remember

  265. last week

  266. I told you

  267. that as we look

  268. at these first

  269. seven verses

  270. we're going to see

  271. some of the major themes

  272. of the book of Romans

  273. outlined for us

  274. and we're going to do

  275. that once again.

  276. One of the major themes

  277. that Paul has already

  278. hit on for us here

  279. is this,

  280. that God is a God

  281. who keeps

  282. his promises.

  283. You'll want to remember

  284. that when we get

  285. to Romans chapter 9

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  286. and 11,

  287. you know,

  288. in 20 or 30 years.

  289. Because Paul's hope

  290. there is to remind us,

  291. look,

  292. no matter what you see,

  293. no matter what's happened,

  294. God has kept

  295. his promise.

  296. What he said

  297. in Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3:15

  298. verse 15

  299. will and has

  300. come to pass.

  301. Now the other theme

  302. that we're going to see

  303. throughout the book

  304. that's highlighted here

  305. is this,

  306. that there is one story

  307. from beginning to end.

  308. The Old Testament

  309. and the New Testament

  310. are two halves

  311. of the same book.

  312. We'll see that even more

  313. when we get to Romans

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  314. chapter 4.

  315. I also told you last week

  316. that Romans is referred to

  317. as the fifth gospel.

  318. That is what Paul teaches here,

  319. Jesus taught first.

  320. And we don't have to go

  321. to just one place,

  322. we can go to two places.

  323. We have the famous passage

  324. in Luke chapter 24

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  325. when Jesus,

  326. after his resurrection,

  327. is walking with two men

  328. who are walking

  329. on this road to Emmaus

  330. and he explains to them

  331. that the Old Testament

  332. is about him.

  333. In John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  334. Jesus is arguing

  335. with the Jews

  336. and he reminds them

  337. of this,

  338. if you believed Moses,

  339. you would believe me

  340. for he wrote of me.

  341. Who wrote the book

  342. of Genesis?

  343. Moses.

  344. What was Moses

  345. writing of

  346. in Genesis chapter 3, 15?

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  347. He was writing

  348. of Jesus,

  349. the one who would crush

  350. the head

  351. of the serpent.

  352. C.S. Lewis

  353. in that same section

  354. of Mere Christianity

  355. goes on to tell us this,

  356. I must keep alive

  357. in myself

  358. the desire

  359. for my true country

  360. which I shall not find

  361. till after death.

  362. I must never let it

  363. get snowed under

  364. or turned aside.

  365. I must make it

  366. the main object

  367. of life

  368. to press on

  369. to that other country

  370. and to help others

  371. to do the same.

  372. Christian,

  373. you must make it

  374. the main object

  375. of your life

  376. to press on

  377. to that other country

  378. and to help

  379. others

  380. to do

  381. the same.

  382. Jesus is the one

  383. who fulfills

  384. what is promised

  385. beforehand

  386. through his prophets

  387. in the holy scriptures.

  388. Paul goes on

  389. to tell us

  390. even more

  391. in verse 3.

  392. We find out

  393. that Jesus

  394. is not simply

  395. the one who's promised.

  396. This is concerning

  397. his son

  398. who is descended

  399. from David

  400. according to the flesh.

  401. Now the word flesh

  402. in the New Testament

  403. can mean a variety

  404. of things.

  405. We want to be clear

  406. about what it means

  407. in this context.

  408. Here, flesh

  409. is simply saying

  410. Jesus was actually

  411. a human.

  412. So going back

  413. to our confession

  414. of faith

  415. earlier in this service,

  416. remember we said

  417. Jesus is 100% God

  418. and 100% man.

  419. And that's what

  420. Paul is saying here.

  421. According to

  422. his humanity,

  423. Jesus was descended

  424. from David.

  425. Of course,

  426. he's not descended

  427. from David

  428. according to

  429. his divine nature

  430. because he

  431. preexisted David.

  432. No, it's according

  433. to his human nature.

  434. This gives us

  435. another piece

  436. of Old Testament

  437. fulfillment.

  438. It's not just

  439. the promises

  440. and the prophets

  441. beforehand

  442. when it comes

  443. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  444. It's the promises

  445. we see throughout

  446. the Old Testament.

  447. And one of the most

  448. important promises

  449. comes in 2 Samuel 7.

  450. God comes to David

  451. and he says to him,

  452. look,

  453. you're the king now

  454. and guess what?

  455. An even greater

  456. king will come

  457. from your line.

  458. The ultimate

  459. and final king

  460. is going to come

  461. from the line

  462. of David.

  463. Now,

  464. you might

  465. be wondering

  466. how exactly

  467. this is going

  468. to happen.

  469. We'll get to that

  470. in a minute.

  471. But remember

  472. just that quote

  473. from Gregory of Nazianzus,

  474. what was not assumed

  475. cannot be healed.

  476. Jesus assumed

  477. full humanity

  478. so he could save

  479. us as humans.

  480. We're going to get

  481. to even more of that

  482. in Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  483. So in verse 3,

  484. we're told

  485. that he's descended

  486. from David

  487. according to the flesh.

  488. And then in verse 4,

  489. we find out

  490. he's declared

  491. to be the son of God

  492. in power

  493. according to the spirit

  494. of holiness

  495. by his resurrection

  496. from the dead.

  497. Jesus Christ,

  498. our Lord.

  499. Some people

  500. have misunderstood

  501. or twisted

  502. this verse

  503. to say

  504. that Jesus

  505. was at some point

  506. actually not divine.

  507. He was only a man.

  508. And then later,

  509. you know,

  510. God looked on him

  511. and said,

  512. you know what?

  513. I think Jesus

  514. is such a great guy.

  515. And so I'm going

  516. to declare him

  517. to be the son of God.

  518. And so it's important

  519. that we understand

  520. clearly

  521. what's being said here.

  522. The word is declared.

  523. The word is not

  524. to make

  525. or to become.

  526. Okay?

  527. It is not that Jesus

  528. was not the son of God

  529. at some point

  530. and then was declared

  531. to be at another point.

  532. No,

  533. what he's telling us

  534. is that the resurrection

  535. clarifies

  536. and certifies for us

  537. what was already true.

  538. That if there was

  539. any doubt

  540. about Jesus' identity,

  541. there should be

  542. no doubt

  543. no more

  544. as we look

  545. and see him

  546. as the resurrected

  547. son of man

  548. sitting at the right hand

  549. of God,

  550. the Father Almighty.

  551. That he was

  552. the son of God

  553. and is now declared

  554. by his resurrection

  555. with greater clarity

  556. than ever before.

  557. A man named

  558. John T. Rhodes

  559. does a fantastic job

  560. illustrating this

  561. with this quote

  562. on page seven

  563. of your worship guide.

  564. as Elizabeth II

  565. became queen

  566. on the death

  567. of her father

  568. in February 1952,

  569. but wasn't crowned

  570. until June

  571. the following year,

  572. Christ was king

  573. from his incarnation,

  574. but took his throne

  575. at the resurrection.

  576. Okay?

  577. He was declared

  578. to be

  579. the son of God

  580. with power.

  581. The resurrection

  582. is the coronation,

  583. it's the announcement,

  584. it's the certification

  585. of what was already

  586. true

  587. about Christ.

  588. Now,

  589. you might be wondering,

  590. okay,

  591. wait,

  592. if Christ was king

  593. from his incarnation,

  594. what about before

  595. his incarnation?

  596. Well,

  597. he's king

  598. from his incarnation

  599. according to his

  600. human nature

  601. in the sense

  602. that he fulfills

  603. the promise

  604. of 2 Samuel 7,

  605. but of course

  606. he's the son

  607. of God

  608. for all

  609. eternity.

  610. Eternity past,

  611. eternity future.

  612. And so it's not

  613. that Jesus

  614. becomes God,

  615. he was always God,

  616. it's that there

  617. is now

  618. a new phase

  619. in the history

  620. of redemption.

  621. There's a new

  622. chapter

  623. in the story

  624. of God's

  625. redemption

  626. of his people.

  627. There is

  628. something different,

  629. it's not something

  630. different in Jesus'

  631. nature

  632. or his character,

  633. there is,

  634. however,

  635. something different

  636. in his glory.

  637. And you'll see

  638. this on page

  639. eight of your

  640. worship guide.

  641. Didn't Jesus

  642. always have

  643. supreme authority?

  644. As God,

  645. yes.

  646. But considered

  647. as a man,

  648. the resurrection

  649. ushers in

  650. a new degree

  651. of glory

  652. even for Jesus.

  653. Jesus rises

  654. from the grave,

  655. changed,

  656. glorified,

  657. with a more

  658. majestic body

  659. than before.

  660. And I'll bring

  661. this down

  662. to earth

  663. for you.

  664. Before

  665. Jesus'

  666. resurrection,

  667. it was possible

  668. for Jesus

  669. to get a

  670. cold.

  671. Before

  672. Jesus'

  673. resurrection,

  674. there might

  675. have been

  676. times when

  677. in his

  678. human nature,

  679. he would

  680. have done

  681. really well

  682. to get

  683. some antibiotics.

  684. After

  685. Jesus'

  686. resurrection,

  687. there were

  688. no more

  689. colds.

  690. Jesus has

  691. a perfected

  692. and resurrection

  693. body.

  694. Jesus has

  695. a glory

  696. according to

  697. his human

  698. body that

  699. he never

  700. had before.

  701. And he is

  702. now,

  703. we're told,

  704. in verse

  705. four,

  706. the Son

  707. of God

  708. in power.

  709. There's a

  710. new expression

  711. of Jesus'

  712. power.

  713. There's

  714. something true

  715. about the way

  716. he expresses

  717. his power.

  718. There's

  719. something of

  720. its intensity

  721. that was

  722. not

  723. realized

  724. before that.

  725. We're told

  726. in verse

  727. four,

  728. this new

  729. power is

  730. according to

  731. the spirit

  732. of holiness,

  733. which is a

  734. reference here

  735. to the Holy

  736. Spirit.

  737. And so we

  738. can remember

  739. Jesus'

  740. teaching in

  741. John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  742. 14.

  743. He says

  744. this,

  745. I will

  746. ask the

  747. Father,

  748. and he

  749. will give

  750. you another

  751. helper to

  752. be with

  753. you forever.

  754. Jesus is

  755. telling his

  756. disciples,

  757. look,

  758. there's

  759. going to

  760. be

  761. something

  762. in the

  763. future

  764. that I'm

  765. going to

  766. ask for

  767. and give

  768. to you.

  769. You don't

  770. have the

  771. Holy Spirit

  772. in the way

  773. that you

  774. will have

  775. it.

  776. You will

  777. receive it

  778. after my

  779. resurrection

  780. and my

  781. ascension.

  782. And then

  783. what do we

  784. see in the

  785. history of

  786. the church?

  787. Acts chapter

  788. two,

  789. Peter is

  790. preaching this

  791. sermon.

  792. Pentecost

  793. happens where

  794. there's this

  795. great pouring

  796. out of the

  797. Holy Spirit,

  798. a pouring

  799. out such as

  800. has never

  801. been seen

  802. in the history

  803. of God's

  804. people.

  805. And Peter

  806. says this,

  807. speaking about

  808. Jesus,

  809. being therefore

  810. exalted at the

  811. right hand of

  812. God and having

  813. received from the

  814. Father the

  815. promise of the

  816. Holy Spirit,

  817. he has poured

  818. out this that

  819. you yourselves

  820. are seeing

  821. and hearing.

  822. Jesus,

  823. in his

  824. resurrection

  825. and his

  826. ascension,

  827. pours out

  828. on his

  829. people

  830. even greater

  831. gifts and

  832. power than

  833. ever before.

  834. It is

  835. better

  836. for you

  837. to be a

  838. Christian now

  839. after Jesus'

  840. resurrection

  841. and ascension

  842. than it was

  843. to be

  844. Abraham.

  845. It is

  846. more and

  847. greater,

  848. you experience

  849. a greater

  850. presence of

  851. the Holy

  852. Spirit than

  853. Moses and

  854. the people

  855. who were

  856. with him.

  857. Why?

  858. Because he

  859. was declared

  860. to be the

  861. Son of God

  862. in power

  863. according to

  864. the Spirit

  865. of holiness

  866. by his

  867. resurrection

  868. from the

  869. dead.

  870. Paul is

  871. telling us,

  872. teaching us,

  873. reminding us

  874. that Jesus'

  875. resurrection

  876. and his

  877. ascension to

  878. the right

  879. hand of

  880. God the

  881. Father

  882. means more

  883. blessings and

  884. power for

  885. his people

  886. than ever

  887. before.

  888. In other

  889. words,

  890. the resurrection

  891. proved

  892. something

  893. and the

  894. resurrection

  895. did

  896. something.

  897. Pentecost

  898. would not

  899. and could

  900. not happen

  901. until Jesus

  902. was sitting

  903. at the

  904. right hand

  905. of God

  906. the Father

  907. Almighty

  908. fulfilling

  909. his promise

  910. to his

  911. disciples

  912. to send

  913. the Holy

  914. Spirit

  915. in full

  916. measure

  917. upon his

  918. people

  919. and on

  920. the church.

  921. It is

  922. good news

  923. for us

  924. that he

  925. has been

  926. raised from

  927. the dead

  928. in power

  929. according to

  930. the Spirit

  931. of holiness.

  932. Now I'll ask you

  933. the same question

  934. I asked you

  935. about prophecies

  936. from the Old

  937. Testament being

  938. fulfilled.

  939. Why do you

  940. care?

  941. We cared

  942. about Old

  943. Testament prophecies

  944. being fulfilled

  945. because it means

  946. the return

  947. to Eden

  948. the resolving

  949. of what was

  950. broken

  951. in the

  952. garden

  953. and we

  954. care that

  955. Jesus was

  956. raised from

  957. the dead

  958. in power

  959. according to

  960. the Spirit

  961. of holiness

  962. because it

  963. means his

  964. gifts to

  965. his people

  966. are greater

  967. than the

  968. past.

  969. John D. Rhodes

  970. goes on to

  971. tell us this

  972. Jesus has won

  973. every blessing

  974. for us

  975. now he will

  976. make sure

  977. those blessings

  978. are poured

  979. out from

  980. on high.

  981. it is as

  982. if at

  983. the atonement

  984. Christ won

  985. the right

  986. to a

  987. treasure chest

  988. of jewels

  989. kept by

  990. the Father.

  991. The Father

  992. then joyfully

  993. gives these

  994. jewels to

  995. Christ's

  996. people as

  997. and when

  998. he is

  999. asked.

  1000. Jesus'

  1001. gifts to

  1002. you and

  1003. to his

  1004. church are

  1005. greater than

  1006. ever before

  1007. because of

  1008. the resurrection

  1009. from the

  1010. dead

  1011. in power

  1012. by the

  1013. Spirit

  1014. of holiness.

  1015. That's our

  1016. hope when we

  1017. have our

  1018. confession of

  1019. sin.

  1020. That Jesus

  1021. who is risen

  1022. and is with

  1023. God the

  1024. Father Almighty

  1025. intercedes for

  1026. us.

  1027. We're going to

  1028. go on to

  1029. hear in

  1030. Romans chapter

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  1031. 8 that in

  1032. fact he

  1033. intercedes for

  1034. us with

  1035. groanings too

  1036. deep for

  1037. words.

  1038. It's our

  1039. hope and

  1040. our confidence

  1041. that he

  1042. represents us

  1043. before the

  1044. Father.

  1045. We pray in

  1046. Jesus' name

  1047. with greater

  1048. access than

  1049. the saints

  1050. of the Old

  1051. Testament.

  1052. Another

  1053. theologian,

  1054. Herman Boving,

  1055. reminds us that

  1056. the resurrection

  1057. is the

  1058. declaration,

  1059. it's the

  1060. reminder to

  1061. us that our

  1062. sins are in

  1063. fact forgiven.

  1064. If we ever

  1065. had any doubt,

  1066. we need to

  1067. remember that

  1068. Jesus has been

  1069. declared the

  1070. Son of

  1071. God.

  1072. Even more

  1073. than that,

  1074. he reminds us

  1075. there's various

  1076. places throughout

  1077. Paul's letters

  1078. where he tells

  1079. us, look,

  1080. evil forces and

  1081. powers are more

  1082. restrained than

  1083. they ever have

  1084. been.

  1085. Because Jesus

  1086. has put,

  1087. God the

  1088. Father has put

  1089. all of those

  1090. things under

  1091. Jesus' feet.

  1092. And so we're

  1093. reminded definitively

  1094. there's been this

  1095. power that's

  1096. exercised over

  1097. evil and its

  1098. forces.

  1099. It no longer

  1100. rules and

  1101. reigns.

  1102. Jesus is the

  1103. king of the

  1104. world.

  1105. He was declared

  1106. to be the

  1107. Son of God

  1108. in power

  1109. according to

  1110. the spirit of

  1111. holiness by the

  1112. resurrection from

  1113. the dead.

  1114. As the fifth

  1115. gospel,

  1116. Jesus teaches

  1117. us the same

  1118. things.

  1119. Remember in

  1120. John chapter

    John 17 chapter mention

  1121. 17, he has

  1122. his high

  1123. priestly prayer

  1124. and he asks

  1125. for many

  1126. things including

  1127. the unity of

  1128. his people.

  1129. He also asks

  1130. for glory.

  1131. He says,

  1132. and now

  1133. Father glorify

  1134. me in your

  1135. own presence

  1136. with the glory

  1137. that I had

  1138. with you

  1139. before the

  1140. world existed.

  1141. Man, that

  1142. sounds an

  1143. awful lot like

  1144. declared to be

  1145. the Son of

  1146. God in power.

  1147. And then as

  1148. Jesus gives

  1149. some of his

  1150. final words to

  1151. his disciples,

  1152. as he leaves

  1153. them, Matthew

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1154. chapter 28, he

  1155. tells them this,

  1156. all authority

  1157. in heaven and

  1158. on earth has

  1159. been given to

  1160. me.

  1161. Man, that

  1162. sounds a whole

  1163. lot like

  1164. declared to be

  1165. the Son of

  1166. God in power.

  1167. And how does

  1168. he end that

  1169. sentence in

  1170. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  1171. 28?

  1172. He says this,

  1173. and behold, I

  1174. am with you

  1175. always to the

  1176. end of the

  1177. age.

  1178. That's why we

  1179. follow him.

  1180. That's why we

  1181. obey him.

  1182. That's why we

  1183. hope in him.

  1184. That's why we

  1185. can sing together,

  1186. Jesus the

  1187. Savior reigns,

  1188. the God of

  1189. truth and

  1190. love.

  1191. When he had

  1192. purged our

  1193. stains, he

  1194. took his

  1195. seat above.

  1196. His kingdom

  1197. cannot fail.

  1198. He rules

  1199. o'er earth

  1200. and heaven.

  1201. The keys

  1202. of death

  1203. and hell

  1204. are to

  1205. our Jesus

  1206. given.

  1207. Let's pray.

  1208. Our Father

  1209. in heaven, we

  1210. do thank you

  1211. and praise you

  1212. that Jesus is

  1213. the King of

  1214. the earth,

  1215. that he rules

  1216. and he reigns

  1217. with a power

  1218. that the Old

  1219. Testament saints

  1220. could only

  1221. imagine, and

  1222. that he takes

  1223. the treasures

  1224. that you have

  1225. given him and

  1226. he casts them

  1227. out on his

  1228. people with

  1229. great blessing

  1230. and power.

  1231. We ask that

  1232. you would remind

  1233. us of that

  1234. hope and that

  1235. we would hold

  1236. on to it more

  1237. and more,

  1238. knowing even

  1239. more than that,

  1240. that it's Jesus

  1241. who holds on

  1242. to us.

  1243. We ask all

  1244. these things in

  1245. his mighty

  1246. name.

  1247. Amen.

  1248. Amen.

  1249. Amen.

  1250. Amen.

  1251. Amen.

  1252. Amen.

  1253. Amen.

  1254. Amen.

  1255. Amen.

  1256. Amen.

  1257. Amen.

  1258. Amen.

  1259. Amen.

  1260. Amen.

  1261. Amen.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. Amen.

  1264. Amen.

  1265. Amen.

  1266. Amen.

  1267. Amen.

  1268. Amen.
