  1. Well, a few months ago, as I was taking one of my children a little bit further north for a

  2. running club that she's a part of, I saw a sign for a local church broadly announcing

  3. and proclaiming, your story's important.

  4. And while it is certainly true that God loves us, that he cares deeply about us,

  5. that he knows us intimately, the sign pointed to an age-old universal temptation

  6. that faces human beings in all places and all times.

  7. It's that temptation, that desire to make the story all about me.

  8. To steal the plot line from our Creator and to garner the glory for ourselves.

  9. It's what Adam and Eve did in the garden.

  10. Taking and eating the fruit so that they could establish their own standard of what was right and what was wrong.

  11. It's the same temptation that we read about today in Jonah chapter 1.

    Jonah 1 chapter mention

  12. And if we're honest with ourselves, it's the same temptation we face every morning we wake up.

  13. In Colossians 1, 15 through 20, the Apostle Paul clearly presents God's plot.

  14. In summary, he states,

  15. Let us keep this in mind as we consider the first chapter of Jonah as a cautionary tale.

  16. A cautionary tale for those of us tempted to steal the plot.

  17. Tempted to steal the plot by making the story about us instead of making it about God's sovereign grace.

  18. But rest assured, even when we attempt to steal the story from our Creator,

  19. we discover, like we do in Jonah,

  20. that God sovereignly weaves both good and evil,

  21. obedience and rebellion,

  22. the mighty and the lowly of this world,

  23. and the entire pageantry of his creation

  24. into the plot of his enduring grace.

  25. And so when we read through Jonah 1, 1 through 16,

  26. I'd ask for you to be on the lookout for three warnings

  27. that we will consider

  28. about elevating our story

  29. and stealing the plot.

  30. But before we do that,

  31. if you would join me in prayer,

  32. and then we will turn our attention to reading Jonah 1.

  33. Let us pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. God, we are thankful for your word.

  36. God, for it is a bedrock of truth

  37. in a world that doesn't know what truth is.

  38. And God, we are thankful for your son, Jesus Christ.

  39. God, we are thankful for your Holy Spirit,

  40. and we ask that your Holy Spirit might even now

  41. prepare our hearts for the reading and the teaching of your word.

  42. And all of this might be done for our good and your glory.

  43. In Christ's name we pray.

  44. Amen.

  45. All right.

  46. So if you would join with me in turning to Jonah 1,

  47. we're going to read all the way up to the point

  48. where everybody thinks that Jonah is about,

  49. which is the big fish.

  50. We're not even going to touch the big fish today.

  51. And so let's start with Jonah 1, verse 1.

    Jonah 1:1

  52. Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah, the son of Amittai, saying,

  53. Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and call out against it,

  54. for their evil has come up before me.

  55. But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.

  56. He went down to Joppa and found the ship going to Tarshish.

  57. So he paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish,

  58. away from the presence of the Lord.

  59. But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea,

  60. and there was a mighty tempest on the sea,

  61. so that the ship threatened to break up.

  62. Then the mariners were afraid, and each cried out to his God.

  63. And they hurled the cargo that was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them.

  64. But Jonah had gone down into the inner part of the ship

  65. and had lain down and was fast asleep.

  66. So the captain came and said to him,

  67. What do you mean, you sleeper?

  68. Arise, call out to your God.

  69. Perhaps the God will give a thought to us that we may not perish.

  70. And they said to one another,

  71. Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  72. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.

  73. Then they said to him,

  74. Tell us on whose account this evil has come upon us.

  75. What is your occupation, and where do you come from?

  76. What is your country, and of what people are you?

  77. And he said to them,

  78. I am a Hebrew, and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven,

  79. who made the sea and the dry land.

  80. Then the men were exceedingly afraid,

  81. and said to him,

  82. What is this that you have done?

  83. For the men knew that he was fleeing from the presence of the Lord,

  84. because he had told them.

  85. Then they said to him,

  86. What shall we do to you that the sea may quiet down for us?

  87. For the sea grew more and more tempestuous.

  88. He said to them,

  89. Pick me up and hurl me into the sea.

  90. Then the sea will quiet down for you,

  91. for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you.

  92. Nevertheless, the men rode hard to get back to dry land,

  93. but they could not,

  94. for the sea grew more and more tempestuous against them.

  95. Therefore, they called out to the Lord,

  96. O Lord, let us not perish for this man's life,

  97. and lay not on us innocent blood,

  98. for you, O Lord, have done as it pleased you.

  99. So they picked up Jonah and hurled him into the sea,

  100. and the sea ceased from its raging.

  101. Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly,

  102. and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.

  103. Well, we see the first warning here in the first three verses.

  104. And really, what we see before getting into that is,

  105. you know, in today's culture,

  106. in today's Christian culture, I would say,

  107. we make much ado about open doors.

  108. And I remember, as a kid,

  109. pleading with God,

  110. God, would you just open this door or close this door?

  111. That way I would know what you want me to do.

  112. So we plead with God for these open doors or the closed doors.

  113. Oftentimes, you know, it's more like,

  114. God, would you open the easy doors,

  115. and would you close the doors that would be hard for me to walk through?

  116. We also praise God.

  117. You know, we praise God when he opens the doors,

  118. especially the ones we want open in,

  119. and we have this sense of peace that God is working in our lives

  120. and moving us towards this one open door.

  121. And we praise him for closing doors,

  122. and we see what would have happened maybe if we'd gone through that door,

  123. and we thank him for the protection that he's given to us.

  124. And then when we're talking with other people about decisions that we've made,

  125. we present this concept of open and closed doors

  126. as a way of saying,

  127. hey, yeah, you know, this is justification for why I'm making this decision.

  128. And sometimes we fail to avail ourselves

  129. of what God has presented to us

  130. as a way of knowing what it is that we are to do

  131. to glorify and enjoy him forever.

  132. We may ask for open doors,

  133. but do we look to Scripture

  134. where God has clearly laid out

  135. what it is that he requires of us?

  136. Do we pray and seek

  137. the confirmation of the Holy Spirit

  138. as we consider,

  139. and do we ask for the wisdom

  140. to make these difficult decisions?

  141. Do we consult godly men and women

  142. that God has placed in our midst

  143. who have life experiences

  144. that can help us

  145. to know what it is that we are to do

  146. and to make a wise decision?

  147. And I bring that up

  148. because really this first warning

  149. is a warning against,

  150. well, not nearly against,

  151. but to beware

  152. of following and pursuing open doors.

  153. Because when we look at Jonah's life,

  154. we can see here

  155. where in many ways,

  156. Jonah followed open doors

  157. in direct opposition

  158. to what God had called him to do.

  159. God called him to go preach to the Ninevites.

  160. Jonah said,

  161. I don't want to do that.

  162. And he had open doors.

  163. He had a profession

  164. that allowed him to travel.

  165. Oh, open door.

  166. He had a profession

  167. that provided him with at least funds

  168. to make such a trip.

  169. Huh, open door.

  170. He had

  171. an ability

  172. to go

  173. to the

  174. port.

  175. Open door.

  176. There's a port nearby.

  177. Not only is there a port nearby,

  178. there's a ship in that port.

  179. Ah,

  180. and lo and behold,

  181. there are sailors there

  182. that are getting ready

  183. to depart to Tarshish,

  184. the furthest place

  185. away that I want to go

  186. from Nineveh.

  187. And guess what?

  188. They're going to take me on

  189. as a passenger.

  190. Open door.

  191. Jonah using

  192. the very blessings

  193. of the God

  194. he is seeking

  195. to flee from

  196. just

  197. to follow

  198. his own plot.

  199. And what plot is that?

  200. Well,

  201. God's plot was,

  202. Jonah,

  203. I want you to go to Nineveh

  204. and show them grace

  205. to be the mouthpiece

  206. that calls them

  207. to repentance.

  208. Jonah's like,

  209. nope,

  210. nope.

  211. God,

  212. I want you to pour out

  213. your wrath and judgment

  214. on them.

  215. I don't want to offer them

  216. your grace.

  217. God says,

  218. Jonah,

  219. I want you to go tell

  220. the Ninevites

  221. how much I love them.

  222. Jonah says,

  223. no,

  224. no,

  225. no,

  226. no,

  227. no,

  228. no.

  229. No,

  230. no.

  231. God says,

  232. Jonah,

  233. I have an internal

  234. perspective here.

  235. I'm looking

  236. at bringing

  237. these people

  238. into my kingdom.

  239. And Jonah says,

  240. no,

  241. no,

  242. no,

  243. no,

  244. no,

  245. God,

  246. these are the people

  247. that have hurt us.

  248. These people have killed us.

  249. These people will invade

  250. our land

  251. if we give them

  252. the chance.

  253. No,

  254. no,

  255. no,

  256. I want you

  257. to totally

  258. obliterate them.

  259. So he flees

  260. using the very blessings

  261. that God had given him

  262. to turn his back

  263. on service to God.

  264. Jonah didn't have very much

  265. compared to what we have today.

  266. Think of the resources

  267. that we have

  268. because we live

  269. in this time

  270. and this place.

  271. Then how many

  272. of those conveniences

  273. and blessings

  274. can we use

  275. to justify

  276. turning our back

  277. on doing what God

  278. has called us to do?

  279. we're there

  280. with Jonah

  281. fleeing

  282. from the service

  283. of God

  284. and we

  285. turn from that

  286. to him getting

  287. on board ship

  288. to all of a sudden

  289. we are in

  290. a very chaotic scene.

  291. Right?

  292. We see this

  293. supernatural storm

  294. that as the reader

  295. we know

  296. is God

  297. hurling this storm

  298. at this ship

  299. but all we see here

  300. are these salty sailors

  301. who are scared.

  302. They have not seen

  303. a storm like this.

  304. And so there is

  305. a flurry of activity

  306. as they are taking

  307. their precious cargo.

  308. It is those things

  309. that make their livelihood.

  310. It is those possessions

  311. that they will use

  312. to turn a profit

  313. to take care

  314. of their families

  315. and they are throwing

  316. it overboard

  317. in some chance

  318. to lighten the ship

  319. that it might

  320. break free

  321. from the storm.

  322. The text tells us

  323. that the storm

  324. is so violent

  325. that the ship

  326. threatens

  327. to break apart

  328. to disintegrate.

  329. Now this is

  330. no small storm.

  331. This is a storm

  332. that places

  333. the lives

  334. of Jonah

  335. and not only Jonah

  336. but all of the sailors

  337. on board

  338. in jeopardy.

  339. But it is because of Jonah

  340. that they are there.

  341. Right?

  342. Jonah,

  343. the plot stealer,

  344. the rebellious prophet

  345. who insists

  346. upon his own story

  347. instead of following

  348. God's story.

  349. It's as if God

  350. is throwing this storm

  351. at this little vessel

  352. saying,

  353. Jonah,

  354. you need to make

  355. a plot correction.

  356. You're going

  357. in the wrong direction

  358. and I need you

  359. to turn around now.

  360. And we see

  361. this chaotic scene

  362. taking place

  363. above deck

  364. and where is Jonah,

  365. the plot stealer,

  366. the one who God

  367. is trying to get

  368. his attention?

  369. He's down

  370. in the hold

  371. of the ship.

  372. Is he cowering?

  373. No.

  374. He's fast asleep.

  375. Deep sleep.

  376. The word there

  377. is for sleep

  378. like you're

  379. in surgery asleep.

  380. I mean,

  381. this dude's out.

  382. And he doesn't

  383. even know

  384. what's going on.

  385. Completely

  386. oblivious

  387. to the fact

  388. that his rebellion

  389. has his life

  390. in peril

  391. and also

  392. all of the sailors

  393. on board

  394. that ship.

  395. So the captain

  396. comes down

  397. and he sees Jonah

  398. and he says,

  399. wake up!

  400. Wake up,

  401. you sleeper!

  402. What are you doing?

  403. Call out to your God.

  404. Don't you know

  405. that we're in danger here?

  406. Perhaps,

  407. just maybe,

  408. your God

  409. will hear

  410. and he'll save us.

  411. the race

  412. is the question

  413. of how could

  414. Jonah

  415. sleep

  416. at a time

  417. like that?

  418. Man,

  419. I've been

  420. on a very

  421. small ship

  422. and in the

  423. very small

  424. waves

  425. comparatively

  426. and not

  427. in the storm

  428. and

  429. let's just say,

  430. I did not

  431. enjoy that

  432. and we weren't

  433. even in the

  434. open sea

  435. but we were

  436. bouncing up

  437. and down

  438. and the

  439. hold is

  440. even worse.

  441. You get down

  442. in there,

  443. there's no air

  444. moving,

  445. start turning

  446. green,

  447. you wish you

  448. were back

  449. up on deck

  450. but there's

  451. Jonah

  452. fast asleep

  453. with a

  454. hardened

  455. heart

  456. oblivious

  457. and

  458. calloused

  459. to God's

  460. plot.

  461. It's

  462. odd

  463. that while

  464. Jonah

  465. definitely

  466. doesn't have

  467. peace with

  468. God,

  469. he's found

  470. peace within

  471. himself.

  472. He's

  473. happy,

  474. he's content

  475. with what

  476. he's done.

  477. gives me

  478. pause

  479. to think

  480. are there

  481. times in

  482. my life

  483. where perhaps

  484. I've wrested

  485. the plot

  486. from God's

  487. hands

  488. and attempted

  489. to make it

  490. all about

  491. me

  492. and in

  493. doing so

  494. have hardened

  495. my heart

  496. to what

  497. God's

  498. calling me

  499. to do.

  500. That I've

  501. pursued

  502. my own

  503. story

  504. instead of

  505. caring

  506. about God's

  507. plot.

  508. But even

  509. in the midst

  510. of Jonah's

  511. hardened

  512. calloused

  513. heart,

  514. even in the

  515. midst of him

  516. running away

  517. from God,

  518. God's

  519. sovereign

  520. grace is

  521. at work.

  522. Even in

  523. the midst

  524. of his

  525. rebellion.

  526. You see,

  527. the ship

  528. captain didn't

  529. have to go

  530. down into

  531. that hold.

  532. The ship

  533. captain didn't

  534. have to see

  535. Jonah.

  536. The ship

  537. captain didn't

  538. have to wake

  539. him up.

  540. What a

  541. grace that

  542. God gave

  543. Jonah in

  544. the form of

  545. that captain

  546. to come

  547. down and

  548. to wake

  549. him up.

  550. Otherwise,

  551. Jonah would

  552. have plunged

  553. to a

  554. watery

  555. grave,

  556. along with

  557. all the

  558. other

  559. sailors.

  560. We see

  561. God's

  562. sovereign

  563. grace at

  564. work in

  565. the casting

  566. of lots.

  567. These sailors

  568. aren't doing

  569. this,

  570. saying,

  571. let's see

  572. what Yahweh

  573. Jehovah

  574. God has to

  575. say about

  576. this situation.

  577. They're like,

  578. hey, this is

  579. how we figure

  580. out whose

  581. fault this

  582. is.

  583. So let's

  584. throw some

  585. dice.

  586. Let's

  587. pick some

  588. straws.

  589. And whoever

  590. has the

  591. lowest number

  592. or the

  593. shortest

  594. straw,

  595. yeah, I

  596. guess that's

  597. the one

  598. who's causing

  599. all this

  600. trouble.

  601. God in

  602. his sovereign

  603. grace ensures

  604. that Jonah

  605. pulls the

  606. short straw.

  607. It could

  608. have been

  609. sailor number

  610. two for all

  611. we know.

  612. But God

  613. sovereignly

  614. oversaw it

  615. to make

  616. sure that

  617. Jonah was

  618. identified.

  619. And then we

  620. see God's

  621. sovereign grace

  622. at work in

  623. Jonah's

  624. confession.

  625. Now as

  626. soon as he

  627. pulls the

  628. short straw and

  629. they start

  630. peppering him

  631. with questions,

  632. he's like,

  633. yep, it's

  634. me.

  635. Hi, I'm

  636. the problem.

  637. Yep, it's

  638. me.

  639. They say,

  640. oh, okay, so

  641. what are we

  642. to do,

  643. Jonah?

  644. You're the

  645. problem.

  646. Tell us what

  647. do we need

  648. to do here.

  649. And he

  650. says, just

  651. like you've

  652. done with

  653. your cargo,

  654. pick me up

  655. and hurl

  656. me into

  657. the sea.

  658. And they'll

  659. say, they're

  660. saying, no,

  661. no, no, no,

  662. no, that

  663. can't be the

  664. answer, Jonah.

  665. That's not the

  666. answer.

  667. We're going to,

  668. I tell you what

  669. we're going to

  670. do, Jonah.

  671. We are going to

  672. row our

  673. hardest.

  674. So they take

  675. their oars and

  676. it says they

  677. dug their oars

  678. into the sea,

  679. trying to get

  680. themselves out

  681. of this storm,

  682. but the storm

  683. doesn't relent.

  684. They don't make

  685. any progress.

  686. In fact, the

  687. text tells us

  688. the storm got

  689. worse.

  690. The harder

  691. they fought

  692. against it,

  693. the harder

  694. the storm

  695. fought.

  696. But we're not

  697. much different

  698. than the sailors,

  699. are we?

  700. we're invited

  701. to join God's

  702. plotline

  703. through the

  704. free grace

  705. offered by

  706. Jesus Christ.

  707. Yet there's

  708. something that we

  709. can't give up,

  710. is there?

  711. It's that age-old

  712. temptation, that

  713. idea of making

  714. the story all

  715. about me, of

  716. self-reliance,

  717. which is so

  718. strong, even

  719. in our country.

  720. No, no, no.

  721. We want to be

  722. like the sailors

  723. and say,

  724. no, God,

  725. God, I got

  726. this.

  727. Let me just

  728. roll a little

  729. bit harder.

  730. Let me know

  731. that in some

  732. way I

  733. contributed,

  734. that in some

  735. way I

  736. earned it.

  737. just like the

  738. sailors struggling

  739. to toss Jonah

  740. overboard, we

  741. struggle to

  742. accept God's

  743. rescue presented

  744. in the once and

  745. for all sacrifice

  746. of Jesus

  747. Christ.

  748. We find

  749. ourselves

  750. fighting against

  751. the prophetic

  752. words of

  753. Caiaphas in

  754. John chapter

    John 11 chapter mention

  755. 11 when he

  756. says,

  757. better that one

  758. man die than

  759. the whole

  760. nation perish.

  761. But we

  762. want to work

  763. for it.

  764. We want to

  765. earn it.

  766. We want to

  767. grasp for

  768. ourselves through

  769. our own

  770. efforts the

  771. rescue that

  772. is freely and

  773. graciously bestowed

  774. upon us through

  775. faith in Jesus

  776. Christ.

  777. after all,

  778. like our

  779. first parents,

  780. we love

  781. pursuing our

  782. own plot

  783. line.

  784. We want to

  785. make it all

  786. about us.

  787. In closing,

  788. we see that

  789. just like

  790. Jonah,

  791. our story is

  792. not the main

  793. plot line.

  794. Instead,

  795. the main

  796. plot of

  797. Jonah's life

  798. and of our

  799. lives is

  800. that of

  801. God's

  802. sovereign

  803. grace

  804. pursuing us.

  805. God's

  806. sovereign grace

  807. pulling us

  808. into his

  809. story.

  810. His story

  811. of reconciling

  812. all things

  813. unto himself

  814. by making

  815. peace with

  816. us through

  817. Christ's life,

  818. death,

  819. and resurrection.

  820. So when

  821. you're at the

  822. end of the

  823. rope in

  824. your story,

  825. when you

  826. dug the

  827. oars in

  828. deep and

  829. you're not

  830. getting

  831. anywhere and

  832. the stormed

  833. waves keep

  834. crashing against

  835. you,

  836. when you

  837. are hopeless,

  838. helpless,

  839. and even

  840. numb to

  841. God's

  842. plot,

  843. the heavenly

  844. father is

  845. poised and

  846. ready to

  847. rescue you.

  848. he is

  849. there to

  850. pull you

  851. into his

  852. gloriously

  853. grand plot.

  854. You don't

  855. need to

  856. hold on,

  857. you don't

  858. need to

  859. row hard,

  860. because the

  861. work is

  862. done.

  863. Christ,

  864. the son

  865. of God,

  866. has made

  867. peace with

  868. God for

  869. you.

  870. In other

  871. words,

  872. your story

  873. is important.

  874. God,

  875. it is

  876. never more

  877. important than

  878. when it is

  879. woven into

  880. God's grand

  881. plot of

  882. making all

  883. things right.

  884. Let us

  885. pray.

  886. Oh God,

  887. we thank you

  888. for your

  889. word, we

  890. thank you for

  891. the life of

  892. Jonah, we

  893. thank you for

  894. his struggles,

  895. for in them we

  896. see our own.

  897. God, more

  898. importantly than

  899. seeing our

  900. struggles, God,

  901. we see your

  902. sovereign grace,

  903. your grace at

  904. work, and

  905. even the most

  906. mundane things,

  907. in the storms,

  908. in the casting

  909. of lots, and

  910. people waking up

  911. Jonah.

  912. God, we ask

  913. this morning that

  914. you might allow

  915. us through the

  916. power and presence

  917. of your Holy

  918. Spirit to see

  919. your grace at

  920. work in our

  921. lives, that we

  922. might trust you

  923. and not

  924. ourselves.

  925. In Christ's name

  926. we pray, amen.

  927. Amen.
