  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here.

  4. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Romans.

  10. And you'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter.

  11. It's a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  12. And it's called Romans for a very simple reason, which is that it's written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  13. This letter is about the gospel. It's about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  14. And Paul's hope in writing it is that these churches would be established in the gospel.

  15. That's what he goes on to say just a few verses later in chapter 1, verse 11.

  16. And there are many applications that show up throughout this book,

  17. but Paul has a special focus on the mission and the unity of the church.

  18. There are many spokes that are going to shoot out, but as we've seen before,

  19. and we'll see again this morning, those spokes are constantly returning back to the hub of the gospel.

  20. And as I've told you many times now,

  21. if you're nervous about the fact that we're moving so slowly through the book of Fear Not,

  22. we will speed up a little bit, especially next week.

  23. We're just working slowly through the introduction because there's so much for us to unpack here.

  24. You'll remember last time we were in the book of Romans,

  25. we took a look at verse 5 and we asked this big question,

  26. what does success look like?

  27. What does it look like when it comes to the mission of the church in God's people?

  28. And we saw that the success was to bring about the obedience of faith.

  29. Paul also gave us the why, why that actually matters,

  30. and it matters because it's for the sake of his name.

  31. We discussed the fact that it is in God's glory that we discover our good.

  32. And then Paul gave us the scope that this is for all the world,

  33. that it's for all people everywhere.

  34. As we turn from verse 5 to verses 6 and 7,

  35. we're asking a different question, which is,

  36. who are you?

  37. What is the basic definition of the Christian?

  38. And if I ask you, who are you, really what I'm asking you is this,

  39. what is most important?

  40. What is the thing in life that matters more than anything else?

  41. Now this might sound a little coming out of left field,

  42. and that's because it is.

  43. I'm going to ask you another question.

  44. If you were going to get a tattoo, what would you get it of?

  45. Now in asking that, I realize some of you already have tattoos,

  46. and so you can already answer, oh, I already know.

  47. I already have it.

  48. Okay.

  49. With that in mind, I'm going to invite you to turn with me to Romans 1.

  50. For the sake of context, we're going to start at verse 1.

  51. And as we do this, remember that this is God's word.

  52. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold,

  53. even the finest gold,

  54. and it's sweeter than honey,

  55. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  56. And that's why we read it now, Romans 1, starting at verse 1.

  57. Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle,

  58. set apart for the gospel of God,

  59. which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures,

  60. concerning his son who was descended from David,

  61. according to the flesh,

  62. and was declared to be the son of God in power,

  63. according to the spirit of holiness,

  64. by his resurrection from the dead,

  65. Jesus Christ our Lord,

  66. through whom we have received grace and apostleship

  67. to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name,

  68. among all the nations,

  69. including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  70. To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints,

  71. grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  72. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  73. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you,

  74. as we do every week, for your word that you've given to us.

  75. You haven't abandoned us to figure things out on our own,

  76. but instead, you make good on your promise.

  77. You tell us that we belong to you,

  78. and so you give us everything that we need.

  79. We ask that you would do that this morning by your word,

  80. that you would instruct us, you'd guide us, you'd shape us.

  81. More than all of that, you'd show us Jesus,

  82. that we would see his beauty and his power and his holiness and his majesty and his glory.

  83. We'd be able to grow in knowing his mercy and his grace and his love.

  84. And we thank you that we don't worry this morning

  85. about whether we've earned or deserved these things.

  86. We know, in fact, we haven't.

  87. And so we simply ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  88. Amen.

  89. Amen.

  90. If you pay attention to things like this,

  91. you may have noticed exactly three weeks ago today,

  92. the Postal Service did what it does,

  93. if not every year, every few years,

  94. which is they raised the price of first-class stamps

  95. from 68 cents to 73 cents.

  96. It's about double what postage was back in 2002.

  97. And it's no secret that the USPS is struggling

  98. and has been struggling for some time.

  99. struggling both with financial problems and also slow delivery.

  100. In 2023, they had a net loss of $6.5 billion.

  101. Now, there's many factors.

  102. The most obvious factor in all of these things

  103. is the emergence of email,

  104. which is replacing much of snail mail.

  105. And so there's just less volume in the Postal Service

  106. because now, instead of sending each other letters,

  107. we send each other texts and emails.

  108. The current Postmaster General is a man named Louis DeJoy.

  109. And in April of this year, he was interviewed,

  110. and he said,

  111. the Postal Service across the board is facing a crisis.

  112. We have seen a dramatic decline in first-class mail delivery

  113. as more and more people communicate online.

  114. And so there's a dramatic shift that's happening in our world,

  115. as all of us know,

  116. dramatic changes in communication.

  117. And in the midst of those changes,

  118. there are some things that never change.

  119. Whether you send an email or a letter,

  120. you do something that people have done for millennia,

  121. which is this.

  122. You've got to say who it's to.

  123. You have to say who it's from.

  124. All right?

  125. Some things never change.

  126. And that's what's happening in this letter

  127. that Paul is writing to the Romans.

  128. We are finishing this week his introduction,

  129. which takes up verses 1 through 7.

  130. Verses 1 through 5 are Paul's introduction.

  131. Paul has been saying in these last five verses,

  132. here is who the letter is from.

  133. It's from me, Paul.

  134. And now if that surprises you,

  135. remember,

  136. because we've talked about a lot of things

  137. that are not related to Paul, right?

  138. We've talked about Jesus Christ

  139. and the fact that he was descended from David

  140. and that he's here to bring about the obedience of faith.

  141. That's because Paul has used the introduction

  142. about himself as an excuse to talk about Jesus.

  143. So he says,

  144. hey, this is from Paul,

  145. and here's all these things you need to know

  146. about me and my mission in Jesus.

  147. Okay?

  148. So verses 1 through 5,

  149. that's the from part of the letter.

  150. Verses 6 through 7,

  151. we turn to the to.

  152. Verses 1 through 6 then,

  153. or 1 through 5,

  154. who is Paul?

  155. Who is the letter from?

  156. Verses 6 through 7,

  157. who is it to?

  158. Who is Paul writing to?

  159. And we're asking not just the name of the recipients here,

  160. we're also asking about their identity.

  161. And the very first thing he tells them

  162. about their identity is this.

  163. Verse 6,

  164. you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ.

  165. This shouldn't sound new to you at all

  166. if you've been here the last several weeks

  167. in the book of Romans

  168. because Paul has been circling

  169. around the same themes over and over.

  170. He is again saying something that he has said before.

  171. We already knew that Paul belonged to Christ, right?

  172. What did we see in verse 1?

  173. Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ.

  174. And then we talked about it again last time

  175. when we were at verse 5.

  176. We talked about the why of Paul's mission,

  177. that it is for the sake of his name.

  178. In other words,

  179. everything should lead back to Jesus Christ.

  180. Everything revolves around

  181. and centers on Jesus Christ.

  182. That's why I've been telling you

  183. that there are many spokes

  184. that tie back to one hub.

  185. And so I'm going to tell you

  186. the same thing I told you

  187. in verses 1 and 5.

  188. There are three different options

  189. for who we belong to.

  190. Remember, option one,

  191. you can belong to another person.

  192. And I don't need to convince you

  193. that that's probably not a great idea.

  194. Because what you know

  195. is that at the end of the day,

  196. any human in this world

  197. will ultimately choose themselves over you.

  198. So option one,

  199. belong to another person or an institution,

  200. not great.

  201. Option two,

  202. this is the option that is tempting,

  203. appealing, alluring.

  204. We can belong to ourselves.

  205. And as we talked about in verse 1 and verse 5,

  206. that is not as good as it sounds.

  207. And it's not as good as it sounds

  208. for a variety of reasons.

  209. First, we think we know what's best for us.

  210. We actually don't.

  211. Second, even if we do find out

  212. what's best for us,

  213. we don't actually do it.

  214. And so each time we've discussed this,

  215. I've given you a different quote,

  216. looking at a different angle

  217. of why it is in fact a terrible idea

  218. to belong to yourself.

  219. And I'm going to give you another one this morning.

  220. Page 8 of your worship guide,

  221. Third, autonomy offered us freedom

  222. and gave us alienation.

  223. Belonging to yourself

  224. actually doesn't end very well.

  225. Option three,

  226. belong to God.

  227. Belong to someone who loves you

  228. more than you love yourself.

  229. And that's what we discussed back in verse 5.

  230. Last time we said,

  231. it is in God's glory

  232. that we discover our good.

  233. It's in God's glory

  234. that we discover our good.

  235. That's actually what leads us

  236. to the good life.

  237. That brings me back to the question

  238. I asked you just a few minutes ago.

  239. What would you get a tattoo of?

  240. And why?

  241. If you've been paying attention

  242. the last number of years

  243. in our culture,

  244. tattoos have been skyrocketing.

  245. We now are at a place

  246. where roughly one-third

  247. of American adults

  248. have a tattoo of some sort.

  249. I've actually noticed

  250. over the last couple years,

  251. if you look at advertising

  252. from clothing companies,

  253. more and more

  254. you'll see models

  255. that are covered in tattoos.

  256. I don't remember that being the case

  257. five years ago.

  258. So this is increasingly

  259. a factor in our culture.

  260. There was an article

  261. in World Magazine

  262. that quoted Kevin Dougherty,

  263. a professor of sociology

  264. at Baylor University,

  265. and he said,

  266. Americans have embraced tattoos

  267. as a way to say,

  268. I get to choose for myself

  269. who I am

  270. and who I declare myself to be.

  271. Think about that.

  272. I get to choose for myself

  273. who I am

  274. and who I declare myself to be.

  275. Now, there are lots

  276. of different places

  277. you might get a tattoo.

  278. There are lots of different

  279. types of tattoos.

  280. Some tattoos are about

  281. memories and experiences.

  282. Some of them are about

  283. family members,

  284. those we love,

  285. those who have passed.

  286. There's one type of tattoo

  287. that typically shows up

  288. on someone's forearm

  289. or their wrist.

  290. And the forearm

  291. or the wrist tattoo

  292. is often meant

  293. as a reminder

  294. of a core value.

  295. It's a core value

  296. or a guiding principle,

  297. a north star,

  298. a first principle.

  299. There's a phrase

  300. or a word

  301. that someone will pick

  302. and it will remind them,

  303. oh yes,

  304. this is how I want

  305. to live life.

  306. This is the thing

  307. that I want to guide me

  308. in every decision.

  309. Why the forearm

  310. or the wrist?

  311. Because I can always

  312. look and see it.

  313. Right?

  314. When I'm faced

  315. with a challenge in life,

  316. when I'm faced

  317. with a decision,

  318. when I don't know

  319. which way to go,

  320. I can just pull out my arm

  321. and be reminded

  322. what it is

  323. that guides me

  324. most of all.

  325. I can remember

  326. what's more important

  327. than anything else.

  328. I had a pastor

  329. in college

  330. who said

  331. if he were going

  332. to get a tattoo,

  333. he would put it

  334. not on his wrist

  335. or his forearm,

  336. he would put it

  337. on his forehead

  338. right here,

  339. which is a place

  340. that you can put a tattoo.

  341. It's a bold move.

  342. And he said

  343. he would do

  344. one thing

  345. and one thing only.

  346. He would get

  347. the Hebrew word

  348. that shows up

  349. in the Old Testament

  350. and means

  351. treasured possession.

  352. The Hebrew word

  353. segula,

  354. which is the word

  355. that God uses

  356. to talk about

  357. his people Israel.

  358. He tells them

  359. over and over,

  360. this is how

  361. I think of you.

  362. This is how

  363. I consider you.

  364. You aren't

  365. just my possession,

  366. you're my treasured

  367. possession.

  368. And you're not

  369. just treasured,

  370. you're my possession.

  371. Now, I'm not

  372. endorsing tattoos

  373. this morning.

  374. I'm not saying

  375. you should

  376. or should not

  377. get one.

  378. I am simply

  379. bringing this up

  380. to say one thing.

  381. If you are

  382. a Christian,

  383. I can tell you

  384. right now

  385. what your

  386. North Star

  387. should be.

  388. I can tell you

  389. this morning

  390. what your

  391. guiding principle

  392. is.

  393. And it is this.

  394. You are

  395. a treasured

  396. possession.

  397. What should you

  398. pull out

  399. to remember

  400. your way

  401. when you think

  402. you've lost it?

  403. What is it

  404. that determines

  405. your decisions

  406. when they're

  407. difficult?

  408. what is it

  409. that is

  410. your first

  411. principle?

  412. Paul tells us

  413. right here

  414. in verse 6.

  415. You

  416. who are

  417. called

  418. to belong

  419. to Jesus

  420. Christ.

  421. I get

  422. to choose

  423. for myself

  424. who I am

  425. and who

  426. I declare

  427. myself

  428. to be.

  429. No.

  430. You actually

  431. don't.

  432. You in

  433. fact

  434. belong

  435. to Jesus

  436. Christ.

  437. He has

  438. already

  439. decided

  440. who you

  441. are

  442. and who

  443. you will

  444. be.

  445. Now you

  446. don't need

  447. to get a

  448. tattoo of

  449. that.

  450. One of the

  451. reasons is

  452. this.

  453. God already

  454. has one.

  455. He tells

  456. Israel in

  457. Isaiah

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  458. chapter 49,

  459. behold,

  460. behold,

  461. I have

  462. engraved

  463. you on

  464. the palms

  465. of my

  466. hands.

  467. That's

  468. where the

  469. reminder

  470. is.

  471. You don't

  472. need to write

  473. me on your

  474. body.

  475. I've already

  476. written you

  477. on mine.

  478. Christian,

  479. that is

  480. your first

  481. principle.

  482. that is

  483. your

  484. north star.

  485. Jesus

  486. says this

  487. in John

    John 10 chapter mention

  488. chapter 10,

  489. my sheep

  490. hear my

  491. voice and

  492. I know

  493. them and

  494. they follow

  495. me.

  496. Brothers

  497. and sisters,

  498. this is

  499. radically

  500. different than

  501. what the

  502. world around

  503. us is

  504. saying at

  505. this moment

  506. in 2024.

  507. This is on

  508. page 8

  509. again of

  510. your worship

  511. guide.

  512. Taylor Swift

  513. gave a

  514. commencement

  515. address at

  516. New York

  517. University in

  518. 2022 and

  519. she had

  520. many things

  521. to say.

  522. One of the

  523. things she

  524. had to say

  525. was this,

  526. I have

  527. some good

  528. news.

  529. It's

  530. totally up

  531. to you.

  532. I have

  533. some terrifying

  534. news.

  535. It's

  536. totally up

  537. to you.

  538. One of

  539. those statements

  540. is correct.

  541. She has

  542. some terrifying

  543. news.

  544. That's what

  545. our culture

  546. is telling

  547. you right

  548. now.

  549. It is

  550. entirely

  551. up.

  552. It's

  553. up to

  554. you to

  555. figure out

  556. what exactly

  557. your sexuality

  558. or your

  559. expression

  560. should be.

  561. It's

  562. up to

  563. you to

  564. determine

  565. what is

  566. right or

  567. wrong.

  568. It's

  569. up to

  570. you to

  571. decide

  572. ultimate

  573. reality

  574. through

  575. whichever

  576. political

  577. party

  578. you

  579. affiliate

  580. with.

  581. And

  582. that is

  583. a crushing

  584. weight.

  585. In fact,

  586. I would

  587. tell you

  588. it's more

  589. than a crushing

  590. weight.

  591. weight.

  592. It's a

  593. weight that

  594. humans are

  595. not designed

  596. to bear

  597. up under.

  598. It is

  599. in fact

  600. too much.

  601. We should

  602. not be

  603. surprised that

  604. anxiety and

  605. depression

  606. spike the

  607. more we

  608. tell people

  609. it's totally

  610. up to

  611. you.

  612. And Paul

  613. here has a

  614. radical and

  615. transformative

  616. word.

  617. you who

  618. are called

  619. to belong

  620. to Jesus

  621. Christ.

  622. That is

  623. the fundamental

  624. reality of

  625. the Christian.

  626. That is

  627. the

  628. foundation.

  629. Why is

  630. it as

  631. Christians

  632. that we

  633. should turn

  634. the other

  635. cheek?

  636. Why would

  637. you not

  638. vindicate

  639. yourself and

  640. get the

  641. revenge that

  642. you need,

  643. right?

  644. You're not

  645. going to get

  646. perfect justice

  647. anywhere else.

  648. why not

  649. take it all

  650. up into

  651. your own

  652. hands?

  653. Because you

  654. belong to

  655. Jesus Christ

  656. and therefore

  657. you know

  658. that he

  659. will defend

  660. you.

  661. Even more

  662. than that,

  663. bringing

  664. ultimate

  665. justice is

  666. his job,

  667. not your

  668. job.

  669. And he

  670. will do

  671. it for

  672. his

  673. children.

  674. Why

  675. would you

  676. be generous

  677. with your

  678. money

  679. when the

  680. future is

  681. filled with

  682. all sorts

  683. of unknown

  684. and frightening

  685. things?

  686. You do

  687. it for

  688. one reason

  689. and one

  690. reason only,

  691. because you

  692. belong to

  693. Jesus Christ.

  694. And Jesus

  695. Christ takes

  696. care of

  697. and preserves

  698. and upholds

  699. those who

  700. belong to

  701. him.

  702. Why should

  703. you embrace

  704. hope?

  705. As you

  706. survey the

  707. shameful

  708. moments

  709. and the

  710. failures

  711. and the

  712. mistakes of

  713. your life.

  714. and as

  715. you

  716. realize

  717. that the

  718. older

  719. you

  720. get,

  721. the

  722. more

  723. of

  724. those

  725. there

  726. are

  727. to

  728. review.

  729. For one

  730. reason

  731. and one

  732. reason only,

  733. because you

  734. belong to

  735. Jesus Christ.

  736. And because

  737. you belong

  738. to him,

  739. you have a

  740. future

  741. and a

  742. hope.

  743. It is in

  744. fact not

  745. all up to

  746. you.

  747. he has

  748. written your

  749. story.

  750. He is

  751. still writing

  752. your story.

  753. We already

  754. sang this

  755. this morning.

  756. If you go

  757. back to

  758. page four

  759. of your

  760. worship guide,

  761. look at

  762. verse four.

  763. I am not

  764. my own

  765. and now

  766. my heart

  767. is free.

  768. O

  769. maker,

  770. come and

  771. make what

  772. you will

  773. of me.

  774. There is

  775. nothing

  776. broken

  777. that you

  778. cannot

  779. repair.

  780. So

  781. Lord,

  782. I leave

  783. my life

  784. in your

  785. loving

  786. care.

  787. We

  788. embrace

  789. hope

  790. because

  791. we

  792. belong

  793. to

  794. Jesus

  795. Christ.

  796. Why are

  797. we stingy

  798. with our

  799. bodies?

  800. Why is it

  801. that we

  802. only have

  803. sex with

  804. people we're

  805. married to?

  806. Because

  807. and only

  808. because

  809. you belong

  810. to Jesus

  811. Christ.

  812. your body

  813. is his,

  814. it is not

  815. your own.

  816. We sang

  817. that too.

  818. We sang

  819. that in the

  820. second verse.

  821. My body

  822. is a temple

  823. of the

  824. living God.

  825. I'll worship

  826. in this

  827. house that

  828. his blood

  829. has bald.

  830. As I

  831. bear his

  832. image,

  833. oh may

  834. I not

  835. profane

  836. the holiness

  837. I hold

  838. in this

  839. earthly

  840. frame.

  841. what was

  842. the lie

  843. that Satan

  844. told Adam

  845. and Eve

  846. in the

  847. garden?

  848. The lie

  849. was that

  850. they belonged

  851. to themselves.

  852. The lie

  853. was that

  854. God did

  855. not want

  856. the best

  857. for them.

  858. The lie

  859. was that

  860. God was

  861. not looking

  862. out for

  863. them.

  864. It was

  865. all up

  866. to you.

  867. I have

  868. some good

  869. news.

  870. It's

  871. totally

  872. up to

  873. you.

  874. I have

  875. some

  876. terrifying

  877. news.

  878. It's

  879. totally

  880. up

  881. to

  882. you.

  883. And of

  884. course,

  885. it's only

  886. terrifying

  887. news.

  888. It's the

  889. lie that

  890. Adam and

  891. Eve

  892. believed

  893. so many

  894. decades

  895. ago,

  896. millennia

  897. ago,

  898. in the

  899. garden.

  900. It's the

  901. lie that

  902. you and

  903. I continue

  904. to believe

  905. today.

  906. I belong

  907. to the

  908. Lord.

  909. I am

  910. not my

  911. own.

  912. I will

  913. honor him

  914. for this

  915. I know.

  916. Now,

  917. you might

  918. be thinking,

  919. thanks a

  920. lot,

  921. pastor.

  922. Of course,

  923. you're going

  924. to say

  925. that.

  926. Realtors

  927. always believe

  928. it's a good

  929. time to

  930. buy.

  931. Pastors

  932. always believe

  933. it's a good

  934. time to

  935. belong to

  936. Jesus.

  937. Why?

  938. Why?

  939. Why is

  940. this the

  941. touchstone

  942. above all

  943. other things?

  944. Why should

  945. this be

  946. the north

  947. star?

  948. Even more

  949. than that,

  950. is it safe?

  951. Is it

  952. good?

  953. Will I

  954. regret

  955. belonging

  956. to Jesus

  957. Christ?

  958. Thankfully,

  959. Paul doesn't

  960. leave us to

  961. wonder.

  962. He tells us

  963. many other

  964. things.

  965. He goes

  966. on in

  967. verse 7

  968. to tell us

  969. this.

  970. to all

  971. those in

  972. Rome

  973. who are

  974. loved

  975. by God.

  976. Remember,

  977. treasured

  978. possession.

  979. Verse 6,

  980. what we've

  981. talked about

  982. is possession.

  983. Verse 7,

  984. what we're

  985. going to

  986. talk about

  987. is treasured.

  988. And what

  989. does he

  990. mean here

  991. that we're

  992. loved by

  993. God?

  994. We talked

  995. about this

  996. back in

  997. verse 1.

  998. This gets

  999. us back

  1000. from the

  1001. spoke to

  1002. the hub.

  1003. This ties

  1004. us back

  1005. down to

  1006. the heart

  1007. of the

  1008. gospel.

  1009. The one

  1010. who died

  1011. for us

  1012. is the

  1013. only one

  1014. we can

  1015. give ourselves

  1016. over to

  1017. completely.

  1018. The one

  1019. who died

  1020. for us

  1021. is the

  1022. one we

  1023. can trust

  1024. more

  1025. than we

  1026. trust

  1027. ourselves.

  1028. Why is

  1029. it good

  1030. that we

  1031. belong to

  1032. God?

  1033. It's good

  1034. that we

  1035. belong to

  1036. God

  1037. because

  1038. we are

  1039. loved

  1040. by God.

  1041. God

  1042. says,

  1043. whether you're

  1044. a Christian

  1045. or not

  1046. a Christian,

  1047. there is

  1048. one thing

  1049. that I

  1050. know that

  1051. you need.

  1052. You

  1053. need to

  1054. be cared

  1055. for

  1056. and protected

  1057. by someone

  1058. who loves

  1059. you more

  1060. than you

  1061. love

  1062. yourself.

  1063. Jesus

  1064. says this,

  1065. John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  1066. 10,

  1067. I am

  1068. the good

  1069. shepherd.

  1070. I know

  1071. my own

  1072. and my

  1073. own

  1074. know me.

  1075. Just as

  1076. the father

  1077. knows me

  1078. and I

  1079. know the

  1080. father

  1081. and I

  1082. lay down

  1083. my life

  1084. for the

  1085. sheep.

  1086. That's

  1087. what you

  1088. need.

  1089. You need

  1090. a shepherd

  1091. who lays

  1092. down his

  1093. life

  1094. for the

  1095. sheep.

  1096. You

  1097. won't find

  1098. that in a

  1099. human

  1100. institution.

  1101. You

  1102. won't find

  1103. that in

  1104. another

  1105. person.

  1106. And I

  1107. can

  1108. guarantee

  1109. you will

  1110. not find

  1111. it in

  1112. yourself.

  1113. You

  1114. cannot

  1115. be

  1116. your

  1117. own

  1118. shepherd.

  1119. At

  1120. least not

  1121. very well.

  1122. And so

  1123. Paul is

  1124. reminding us

  1125. at the

  1126. very beginning

  1127. of the

  1128. letter

  1129. of this.

  1130. You

  1131. need to

  1132. belong

  1133. not to

  1134. someone

  1135. else.

  1136. You

  1137. need to

  1138. belong

  1139. not to

  1140. yourself.

  1141. You

  1142. need to

  1143. belong

  1144. to your

  1145. Lord and

  1146. Savior

  1147. Jesus

  1148. Christ.

  1149. the

  1150. one

  1151. whose

  1152. love

  1153. led

  1154. him

  1155. to

  1156. lay

  1157. down

  1158. his

  1159. life

  1160. for

  1161. you.

  1162. Now

  1163. how do

  1164. you get

  1165. that

  1166. kind

  1167. of

  1168. shepherd?

  1169. How do

  1170. you get

  1171. the care

  1172. and

  1173. protection

  1174. that you

  1175. need?

  1176. If it's

  1177. true that

  1178. non-Christians

  1179. and Christians

  1180. both need

  1181. someone who

  1182. loves them

  1183. more than

  1184. they love

  1185. themselves,

  1186. what is

  1187. it that

  1188. you need

  1189. to do?

  1190. Wrong

  1191. question.

  1192. verse 7

  1193. of your

  1194. worship

  1195. guide.

  1196. We are

  1197. Christians

  1198. for one

  1199. reason only

  1200. and that

  1201. is that

  1202. God has

  1203. set his

  1204. love upon

  1205. us.

  1206. That is

  1207. the thing

  1208. that brings

  1209. us out

  1210. of the

  1211. world

  1212. and out

  1213. of the

  1214. dominion

  1215. of Satan.

  1216. We are

  1217. what we

  1218. are,

  1219. not because

  1220. of our

  1221. goodness,

  1222. not because

  1223. of our

  1224. lives,

  1225. not because

  1226. of anything

  1227. in us.

  1228. it all

  1229. comes from

  1230. the love

  1231. of God.

  1232. There is

  1233. nothing to

  1234. do.

  1235. There's

  1236. nothing to

  1237. do except

  1238. to accept

  1239. and follow

  1240. Jesus as

  1241. your Lord

  1242. and King.

  1243. To know

  1244. what Paul

  1245. tells us at

  1246. the end

  1247. here, he

  1248. says,

  1249. called to be

  1250. saints,

  1251. grace to

  1252. you and

  1253. peace.

  1254. Grace,

  1255. Paul is

  1256. reminding

  1257. us of

  1258. God's

  1259. undeserved

  1260. mercy and

  1261. favor on

  1262. his people,

  1263. that he

  1264. has given

  1265. us what

  1266. we do

  1267. not

  1268. deserve.

  1269. And the

  1270. peace

  1271. reminds us

  1272. that while

  1273. at one

  1274. point we

  1275. were at

  1276. enmity with

  1277. God, we

  1278. were at

  1279. war with

  1280. him, we

  1281. have now

  1282. been granted

  1283. reconciliation

  1284. through Jesus

  1285. Christ.

  1286. In other

  1287. words, you

  1288. cannot pull

  1289. yourself up

  1290. by your

  1291. bootstraps.

  1292. You cannot

  1293. do anything

  1294. to prove

  1295. something to

  1296. God or

  1297. earn anything

  1298. from him.

  1299. No, it's

  1300. rooted and

  1301. grounded in

  1302. the love

  1303. of God,

  1304. the grace

  1305. and peace

  1306. of Jesus

  1307. Christ.

  1308. that's what

  1309. results in

  1310. them.

  1311. This is

  1312. verse 7,

  1313. called to

  1314. be saints.

  1315. I was

  1316. talking to

  1317. someone about

  1318. a month

  1319. ago at

  1320. a coffee

  1321. shop and

  1322. this person

  1323. said, hey,

  1324. I've really

  1325. started to

  1326. study the

  1327. saints

  1328. recently.

  1329. And I

  1330. said, you're

  1331. a saint.

  1332. Everyone who

  1333. is a

  1334. Christian is

  1335. a saint.

  1336. How do I

  1337. know?

  1338. Paul tells

  1339. us right

  1340. here.

  1341. Saint simply

  1342. means set

  1343. apart for

  1344. God.

  1345. Does it

  1346. mean that

  1347. we live in

  1348. a certain

  1349. way?

  1350. Yes,

  1351. because

  1352. first we've

  1353. been set

  1354. apart.

  1355. God's

  1356. unmerited

  1357. favor, his

  1358. grace, favor

  1359. we didn't

  1360. earn.

  1361. God's

  1362. peace,

  1363. reconciliation,

  1364. we don't

  1365. deserve.

  1366. We are

  1367. Christians for

  1368. one reason

  1369. only, and

  1370. that is that

  1371. God has

  1372. set his

  1373. love upon

  1374. us.

  1375. That is the

  1376. thing that

  1377. brings us

  1378. out of the

  1379. world and

  1380. out of the

  1381. dominion of

  1382. Satan.

  1383. I belong to

  1384. the Lord.

  1385. I am not

  1386. my own.

  1387. I will

  1388. honor him

  1389. for this I

  1390. know.

  1391. I belong

  1392. to the

  1393. Lord.

  1394. I am

  1395. not my

  1396. own.

  1397. Let's

  1398. pray.

  1399. Our

  1400. Father in

  1401. heaven, we

  1402. thank you

  1403. and we

  1404. praise you

  1405. that you

  1406. have called

  1407. us to

  1408. belong to

  1409. Jesus Christ.

  1410. We thank

  1411. you you

  1412. don't do

  1413. it for

  1414. anything we've

  1415. done, to

  1416. earn it or

  1417. deserve it.

  1418. You do it

  1419. because you

  1420. have set

  1421. your love

  1422. on us and

  1423. you've

  1424. called us

  1425. to be

  1426. saints.

  1427. We ask

  1428. that you

  1429. would remind

  1430. us of

  1431. that, that

  1432. we would

  1433. give up

  1434. other

  1435. belongings and

  1436. that we

  1437. would embrace

  1438. our identity

  1439. in you.

  1440. We ask

  1441. these things

  1442. in the

  1443. mighty name

  1444. of Jesus

  1445. Christ.

  1446. Amen.
