  1. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace,

  2. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  3. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  4. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Romans.

  5. And you'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  6. And it's called Romans for a very simple reason, which is that Paul writes it to the churches that are in the city of Rome.

  7. It is a letter that is about the gospel.

  8. It's about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  9. And Paul's hope in writing this letter, as we saw back in chapter 1, is that these churches would be established in the gospel.

  10. There will be many applications as we go throughout this letter.

  11. And Paul is especially focused with the mission and the unity of the church.

  12. And as I've told you many times now, we will have all kinds of little spokes, right?

  13. We're going to go on little adventures.

  14. One of them is this morning.

  15. And we will constantly return back to the hub of the gospel.

  16. We are in the section of chapters 1 through 3, which are making one very simple argument.

  17. And that argument is summed up later in this chapter when Paul says,

  18. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  19. So Paul's making one big point.

  20. He's saying everyone's a sinner.

  21. Everyone deserves God's judgment.

  22. Chapter 1, Gentiles, or we might say non-religious people, deserve God's judgment.

  23. Chapter 2, Jews, or we might say today, religious people deserve God's judgment.

  24. Chapter 3, which we begin this morning, Paul's going to bring his argument to a full conclusion.

  25. If you've been with us, you know that Paul is coming at this idea from all different angles.

  26. He's trying to get it from every possible side, answering all sorts of objections.

  27. So two weeks ago, we said, look, the law, having access to the scriptures, is not going to save you.

  28. Last week, we said having circumcision is not going to save you.

  29. This week, Paul's going to respond to the new objection that's come from the last two weeks.

  30. If those things can't save you, what is the point?

  31. If being in church, if baptism, if scripture is not going to save me, why am I here?

  32. What are we doing?

  33. It's with that question, we turn now to Romans chapter 3, starting at verse 1.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  34. I invite you to turn with me.

  35. You can turn in your worship guide.

  36. You can turn in your Bible.

  37. You can turn on your phone.

  38. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  39. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  40. Every word of God is true.

  41. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  42. And so that's why we read now Romans chapter 3, starting at verse 1.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  43. Then what advantage has the Jew?

  44. Or what is the value of circumcision?

  45. Much in every way.

  46. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

  47. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  48. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you and praise you again this morning

  49. that you haven't abandoned us and left us to figure out life on our own.

  50. But instead, you've spoken to us and you've spoken clearly in your word.

  51. And so we ask that you would do that again this morning.

  52. You would do what you've promised to do in Isaiah 55,

  53. that your word will not return void to you,

  54. but it will accomplish great things in the lives of your people.

  55. And so we ask that you would do that.

  56. You would use these words in Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  57. to accomplish great things in our lives.

  58. Most of all, we ask that you would show us Jesus,

  59. that we would see his beauty and his glory and his power and his authority,

  60. his mercy and his grace and his love more than ever before.

  61. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  62. Amen.

  63. Many of you know that I was ordained as a pastor in May of 2018.

  64. And to become a pastor in our denomination,

  65. this Presbyterian denomination,

  66. you have to be examined by the regional church.

  67. And so for us, that means you're examined by the churches

  68. in Montana and Colorado and Wyoming.

  69. And one of the tests that you have to take as you're being examined

  70. is a Bible knowledge test.

  71. And they're asking this question,

  72. does this person know enough about the scriptures

  73. to be trusted to be a pastor?

  74. And when you take that exam,

  75. there are some harder questions

  76. that are meant to sort of push you to the limits of your knowledge.

  77. And there are also some easier questions.

  78. There are some softball questions.

  79. And the softball questions are meant to, you know,

  80. help you get some points on your exam

  81. and not feel completely defeated.

  82. One of my friends, who's a pastor here in town in Colorado Springs,

  83. got ordained at the very same time that I did,

  84. the exact same meeting of our presbytery.

  85. And he, in his exam,

  86. he missed this question that I'm about to tell you.

  87. It was not a hard question.

  88. It was a softball question.

  89. Okay, so here it is.

  90. In the book of Daniel, chapter three,

  91. King Nebuchadnezzar takes the prophet Daniel

  92. and he throws Daniel into a fiery furnace.

  93. And when he throws Daniel into a fiery furnace,

  94. he throws three other men in with him.

  95. What are the names of those men?

  96. And how you respond to that question

  97. reveals something about where or how

  98. or whether you grew up in the church.

  99. If you did not grow up in the church,

  100. you might be thinking right now,

  101. wow, that's a really weird question.

  102. And why do I care what the names of the three men were

  103. who were thrown into the fiery furnace with Daniel?

  104. Of what use is that to anyone?

  105. If you did grow up in the church,

  106. the answer is what?

  107. Yeah, everyone knows that, right?

  108. Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  109. And so the committee examining my friend was shocked.

  110. How in the world could this man make it

  111. through his preparations as a pastor,

  112. get to his exam and not know about Shadrach, Meshach,

  113. and Abednego?

  114. And so he said this to them.

  115. I never watched Veggie Tales

  116. or did Bible stories in Sunday school

  117. because I didn't know Christians as a kid.

  118. My friend didn't grow up in the church.

  119. He didn't become a Christian until he was in college.

  120. He didn't grow up going to Sunday school

  121. learning about Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  122. Had he read that story?

  123. Yes.

  124. Did he pay attention to those names?

  125. Not at all.

  126. Right?

  127. Were they critical to him?

  128. He didn't realize that.

  129. He didn't realize he was supposed to know that.

  130. I tell you that story because the initial point

  131. of this passage from Paul is this.

  132. One of the privileges of growing up in the church

  133. is knowing the word of God.

  134. One of the privileges of growing up in the church

  135. is knowing the word of God.

  136. Remember last week we talked about the fact that

  137. signs, religious signs, religious symbols,

  138. religious activity will not save us.

  139. Those things are not our hope.

  140. And so after hearing that, you might be thinking,

  141. that's great.

  142. Okay, Matthew.

  143. Then why are we here?

  144. If religious signs and symbols and activities

  145. don't get us to where we need to go,

  146. what are we doing?

  147. You can imagine the Jews reading the end of chapter two

  148. and they're thinking, okay, Paul, what's the point?

  149. If circumcision doesn't save, why are we doing it?

  150. If the law doesn't save, why are we reading it?

  151. You might think, okay, Matthew, you told me last week

  152. going to church isn't going to save me.

  153. Great.

  154. I'll go to a coffee shop on Sunday morning.

  155. I didn't realize I didn't need to be here.

  156. I'm so glad that's over with.

  157. You told me reading the law would not change my heart.

  158. That's great.

  159. I don't need to read my Bible anymore.

  160. It's a work of the Spirit, so I can just move on.

  161. I suddenly have more time in my schedule.

  162. The Jews reading this would be asking this,

  163. did God make a mistake by introducing circumcision?

  164. Has God changed in some way?

  165. We thought this was really important.

  166. It was so important, in fact,

  167. that God almost killed Abraham at one point

  168. for failing to circumcise one of his kids.

  169. And now you're saying it doesn't matter?

  170. What are we supposed to do with that?

  171. And so that's the question that's being raised here in verse one.

  172. Then what advantage has the Jew

  173. or what is the value of circumcision?

  174. You just told us religious signs and symbols and activity don't save.

  175. So what's their point?

  176. And Paul tells them immediately,

  177. he has a first answer in verse two.

  178. Much in every way,

  179. to begin with,

  180. the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.

  181. And when he says the oracles of God here,

  182. Paul is referring to the Old Testament.

  183. What was the benefit of being a Jew?

  184. Easy.

  185. You had access to the Bible.

  186. You knew things that no other nation knew.

  187. You will reveal things about God

  188. that the Canaanites were not given.

  189. You had insider information.

  190. One of the privileges

  191. of growing up in the church

  192. is knowing the word of God.

  193. Yeah, it doesn't save.

  194. And

  195. it's one of,

  196. Paul even seems to suggest here,

  197. might be for the Jews

  198. the greatest blessing that they have.

  199. And so I'm just gonna pause for a minute

  200. and say a few things.

  201. First,

  202. kids,

  203. do not take for granted

  204. the blessing it is

  205. that your parents bring you here every Sunday.

  206. parents,

  207. do not miss

  208. what a huge deal

  209. it is

  210. to teach your kids

  211. the oracles of God.

  212. Don't forget

  213. how important it is.

  214. it doesn't matter

  215. if your children

  216. are admitted

  217. into Harvard

  218. if they do not know

  219. the word

  220. of God.

  221. It doesn't matter

  222. if your kids

  223. have wild

  224. professional success

  225. if they do not

  226. know

  227. the gospel.

  228. I'm not saying

  229. those things

  230. don't matter.

  231. I'm not saying

  232. they're not important.

  233. I'm not saying

  234. they're bad goals.

  235. What I am saying

  236. is this.

  237. They are not

  238. as important

  239. as knowing

  240. the very

  241. words

  242. of God.

  243. What advantage

  244. has the Jew?

  245. Much

  246. in every

  247. way.

  248. church

  249. what we do

  250. in Sunday school

  251. and nursery

  252. and youth group

  253. really

  254. matters.

  255. We are

  256. giving our

  257. children

  258. one

  259. of the

  260. greatest

  261. blessings.

  262. I've said

  263. this before

  264. and I'll say

  265. it again.

  266. My parents

  267. like all

  268. parents

  269. were flawed

  270. and imperfect.

  271. And my parents

  272. also got two

  273. really basic

  274. really fundamental

  275. things right.

  276. They stayed

  277. married

  278. and they took

  279. us to church

  280. every single

  281. Sunday.

  282. And in the

  283. midst of

  284. imperfection

  285. and mistakes

  286. and failures

  287. as all

  288. parents do

  289. those things

  290. matter

  291. tremendously.

  292. Now I've

  293. been focusing

  294. on kids

  295. for the last

  296. couple

  297. minutes.

  298. Of course

  299. what Paul

  300. is saying

  301. here is

  302. true

  303. of all

  304. of us.

  305. What we

  306. do here

  307. together

  308. every Sunday,

  309. what we do

  310. throughout the

  311. week in our

  312. small groups,

  313. in our

  314. Bible studies,

  315. those

  316. things

  317. really

  318. matter.

  319. don't

  320. underestimate

  321. the power

  322. of being

  323. exposed to

  324. the preaching

  325. of God's

  326. word week

  327. after week

  328. after week.

  329. Don't miss

  330. what a great

  331. privilege it is

  332. to be told

  333. about the

  334. gospel year

  335. after year

  336. after year.

  337. It might

  338. be more

  339. important

  340. than anything

  341. else.

  342. One

  343. pastor says

  344. this,

  345. there is

  346. no higher

  347. privilege

  348. that can

  349. come to

  350. any human

  351. being

  352. than to be

  353. spoken to

  354. directly

  355. by God.

  356. And that's

  357. what Paul

  358. is saying

  359. here.

  360. What advantage

  361. was it for

  362. you to be

  363. a Jew?

  364. Of so

  365. much

  366. advantage.

  367. You

  368. had

  369. what many

  370. other nations,

  371. what no

  372. other nation

  373. had,

  374. the very

  375. words

  376. of God.

  377. God.

  378. Now if

  379. you're a

  380. devil's

  381. advocate,

  382. you might

  383. be asking,

  384. why?

  385. Why is it

  386. so important

  387. to have the

  388. very words

  389. of God?

  390. Why does

  391. it matter

  392. that your

  393. friend did

  394. not know

  395. about Shadrach,

  396. Meshach,

  397. and Abednego?

  398. That doesn't

  399. seem like a

  400. helpful piece

  401. of information

  402. that I need

  403. to spend

  404. years of

  405. time in

  406. God's

  407. word to

  408. know.

  409. No,

  410. either one,

  411. I don't

  412. need to

  413. know that,

  414. or I

  415. can know

  416. that in

  417. a minute,

  418. right?

  419. Maybe your

  420. friend just

  421. needed an

  422. extra

  423. flashcard,

  424. right?

  425. It's not

  426. that he

  427. missed out

  428. on something

  429. by not

  430. being part

  431. of God's

  432. people.

  433. No,

  434. he missed

  435. out on

  436. some

  437. random,

  438. unhelpful,

  439. unuseful

  440. trivia.

  441. Of course,

  442. I tell you,

  443. I told you

  444. that story.

  445. It's just

  446. an example,

  447. right?

  448. A funny

  449. example of

  450. things that

  451. we take for

  452. granted that

  453. we know if

  454. we grew up in

  455. the church,

  456. but are not

  457. actually obvious.

  458. Actually,

  459. you're going to

  460. be okay if

  461. you don't know

  462. about Shadrach,

  463. Meshach,

  464. and Abednego.

  465. You might not

  466. be okay,

  467. though,

  468. if you don't

  469. know about

  470. some other

  471. things.

  472. There are

  473. many advantages

  474. to God's

  475. word.

  476. Scott already

  477. read some of

  478. them this morning

  479. for us from

  480. Psalm chapter

    Psalms 1 chapter mention

  481. 1.

  482. What does it

  483. tell us?

  484. God's word

  485. brings great

  486. flourishing.

  487. The person

  488. who steeps

  489. himself in

  490. that is the

  491. person who

  492. has great

  493. life.

  494. And so what

  495. did the Jews

  496. have?

  497. They had this

  498. manual for

  499. life that no

  500. one else had

  501. access to.

  502. God's promises.

  503. Even more

  504. than that,

  505. they had

  506. God's promises.

  507. What is the

  508. Old Testament

  509. filled with

  510. if not the

  511. promises of

  512. God?

  513. They knew

  514. things like

  515. this.

  516. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  517. chapter 12.

  518. In you,

  519. all the

  520. nations of

  521. the earth

  522. will be

  523. blessed.

  524. Christ.

  525. They knew

  526. that God

  527. was at

  528. work in

  529. the world

  530. in a

  531. special way.

  532. They knew

  533. this from

  534. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 31 chapter mention

  535. chapter 31.

  536. This is the

  537. covenant that I

  538. will make

  539. with the

  540. house of

  541. Israel.

  542. I will put

  543. my law

  544. within them

  545. and I will

  546. write it on

  547. their hearts

  548. and I will

  549. be their

  550. God and

  551. they shall

  552. be my

  553. people.

  554. The Jews

  555. had the

  556. promise of

  557. God's

  558. presence.

  559. They knew

  560. that whatever

  561. was happening

  562. in that

  563. moment was

  564. not the

  565. end of

  566. the story.

  567. They knew

  568. this promise

  569. from Ezekiel

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  570. chapter 36.

  571. And I

  572. will give

  573. you a new

  574. heart and

  575. a new

  576. spirit I

  577. will put

  578. within you.

  579. And I

  580. will remove

  581. the heart

  582. of stone

  583. from your

  584. flesh and

  585. give you

  586. a heart

  587. of flesh.

  588. The Jews

  589. had the

  590. very promises

  591. of God.

  592. You'll see

  593. this on page

  594. seven of

  595. your worship

  596. guide.

  597. The greatest

  598. thing of

  599. all was

  600. the fact

  601. that through

  602. these oracles

  603. of God

  604. the Jews

  605. were given

  606. a hope.

  607. The hope

  608. of the

  609. coming

  610. of the

  611. Messiah.

  612. The other

  613. nations had

  614. no hope

  615. at all

  616. but Israel

  617. had a

  618. hope.

  619. There was

  620. a great

  621. deliverer to

  622. come.

  623. It was a

  624. light in

  625. the darkness.

  626. They alone

  627. had it.

  628. What a

  629. privilege.

  630. church.

  631. They didn't

  632. just have

  633. the promises

  634. of God.

  635. They had

  636. something even

  637. more important

  638. than that.

  639. The Old

  640. Testament

  641. revealed to

  642. God's people

  643. two things.

  644. It showed

  645. them their

  646. great need

  647. for the

  648. gospel.

  649. It revealed

  650. to them

  651. that they

  652. were without

  653. hope except

  654. for a

  655. savior.

  656. showed

  657. them their

  658. need.

  659. And it

  660. also told

  661. them that

  662. there was

  663. a solution.

  664. It told

  665. them their

  666. need in

  667. places like

  668. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 2 chapter mention

  669. chapter 2.

  670. For my

  671. people have

  672. committed

  673. two evils.

  674. They have

  675. forsaken

  676. me, the

  677. fountain of

  678. living waters.

  679. broken

  680. and they've

  681. hewed out

  682. cisterns for

  683. themselves,

  684. broken

  685. cisterns that

  686. can hold

  687. no water.

  688. The Old

  689. Testament said,

  690. look, you

  691. are looking

  692. for life

  693. in all

  694. the wrong

  695. places.

  696. Humanity

  697. is lost.

  698. It cannot

  699. save

  700. itself.

  701. And they

  702. knew there

  703. was hope

  704. from places

  705. like this.

  706. Isaiah

    Isaiah 43 chapter mention

  707. chapter 43.

  708. But now

  709. thus says

  710. the Lord,

  711. he who

  712. created

  713. you,

  714. fear not,

  715. for I

  716. have

  717. redeemed

  718. you.

  719. I have

  720. called you

  721. by name.

  722. You are

  723. mine.

  724. Then new

  725. promises like

  726. the one in

  727. Isaiah 53.

  728. All we

  729. like sheep

  730. have gone

  731. astray.

  732. we have

  733. turned

  734. everyone

  735. to his

  736. own way

  737. and the

  738. Lord has

  739. laid on

  740. him

  741. the

  742. iniquity

  743. of us

  744. all.

  745. What

  746. advantage

  747. has the

  748. Jew?

  749. Much in

  750. every way.

  751. the Jews

  752. were entrusted

  753. with the

  754. oracles

  755. of God.

  756. They knew

  757. what no one

  758. else knew.

  759. They knew

  760. that mankind

  761. was lost

  762. without hope

  763. by themselves.

  764. And they also

  765. knew that

  766. there was a

  767. great hope.

  768. they knew

  769. something that

  770. mattered

  771. more

  772. than anything

  773. else.

  774. Why are the

  775. oracles so

  776. good?

  777. The oracles

  778. of God

  779. are so good

  780. because they

  781. reveal what

  782. the point

  783. of Romans

  784. is.

  785. Remember I

  786. tell you

  787. every single

  788. week at the

  789. very beginning

  790. Romans is

  791. about the

  792. gospel.

  793. It is

  794. about the

  795. good news

  796. of Jesus'

  797. death and

  798. resurrection.

  799. Why was it

  800. so good

  801. to be a

  802. Jew?

  803. Why is it

  804. so great

  805. to grow up

  806. in the

  807. church?

  808. Because Paul

  809. is not

  810. telling you

  811. here anything

  812. you don't

  813. already

  814. know.

  815. You

  816. already

  817. have the

  818. very

  819. words

  820. of God.

  821. Paul's

  822. saying yes

  823. scripture

  824. does not

  825. save.

  826. Having the

  827. law doesn't

  828. get you off

  829. the hook

  830. but it

  831. does point

  832. you to the

  833. one who

  834. does save.

  835. And that

  836. is of

  837. great

  838. value.

  839. This chapter

  840. in Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  841. chapter 3

  842. in just a few

  843. weeks he'll

  844. go on to

  845. say this.

  846. for all

  847. have sinned

  848. and fall

  849. short of

  850. the glory

  851. of God

  852. and are

  853. justified

  854. by his

  855. grace

  856. as a

  857. gift

  858. through the

  859. redemption

  860. that is in

  861. Christ

  862. Jesus.

  863. I've told you

  864. before and I'll

  865. tell you again

  866. that the book

  867. of Romans is

  868. often called

  869. the fifth

  870. gospel

  871. because whatever

  872. Paul teaches

  873. Jesus taught

  874. first.

  875. The same

  876. thing is true

  877. this week.

  878. John chapter

    John 5 chapter mention

  879. 5 Jesus is

  880. rebuking religious

  881. leaders and he

  882. says this

  883. if you

  884. believed

  885. Moses

  886. and it's one

  887. of the

  888. authors of

  889. the Old

  890. Testament

  891. you would

  892. believe me

  893. for he

  894. wrote

  895. of me.

  896. In other

  897. words Jesus is

  898. saying look the

  899. Old Testament was

  900. about me

  901. but if you

  902. do not

  903. believe his

  904. writings how

  905. will you

  906. believe my

  907. words.

  908. Of course

  909. even more

  910. famous is

  911. Luke chapter

    Luke 24 chapter mention

  912. 24.

  913. Jesus is on

  914. the road after

  915. his resurrection

  916. he's explaining

  917. the Old

  918. Testament to

  919. some men who

  920. are with him

  921. and it says

  922. this beginning

  923. with Moses

  924. and all the

  925. prophets he

  926. interpreted to

  927. them in all

  928. the scriptures

  929. the things

  930. concerning

  931. himself.

  932. Why is it

  933. such a blessing

  934. and a privilege

  935. to have the

  936. oracles of

  937. God?

  938. Because

  939. they show

  940. us

  941. Jesus.

  942. They show

  943. us our

  944. need

  945. for his

  946. grace

  947. and his

  948. mercy

  949. and they

  950. show us

  951. him giving

  952. us

  953. that very

  954. same

  955. grace

  956. and

  957. mercy.

  958. It's

  959. good

  960. because

  961. it

  962. gives

  963. light

  964. in the

  965. dark.

  966. Some of

  967. you if you

  968. were here

  969. during our

  970. series on

  971. 1st and

  972. 2nd Peter

  973. many years

  974. ago now

  975. heard me

  976. tell you

  977. many times

  978. about

  979. Corrie

  980. Ten Boom

  981. who is a

  982. Dutch

  983. watchmaker

  984. in the

  985. Netherlands

  986. in World

  987. War II

  988. and she

  989. was famous

  990. for hiding

  991. Jews

  992. who were

  993. trying to

  994. escape the

  995. Nazi regime.

  996. She was

  997. eventually

  998. caught for

  999. her work

  1000. and she

  1001. spent most

  1002. of 1944

  1003. in a

  1004. Nazi

  1005. concentration

  1006. camp.

  1007. One thing

  1008. she did

  1009. though when

  1010. she was in

  1011. this

  1012. concentration

  1013. camp is

  1014. she was

  1015. able to

  1016. sneak in

  1017. a copy

  1018. of the

  1019. Bible

  1020. and she

  1021. and a

  1022. group of

  1023. women

  1024. would read

  1025. it together

  1026. whenever they

  1027. had a

  1028. free moment.

  1029. They would

  1030. read it in

  1031. the morning

  1032. and they

  1033. would read

  1034. it at

  1035. night.

  1036. And she

  1037. tells the

  1038. story,

  1039. this is on

  1040. the back

  1041. of your

  1042. worship

  1043. guide,

  1044. from

  1045. morning

  1046. until

  1047. lights

  1048. out,

  1049. whenever

  1050. we were

  1051. not in

  1052. ranks for

  1053. roll call,

  1054. our

  1055. Bible

  1056. was the

  1057. center

  1058. of an

  1059. ever

  1060. widening

  1061. circle

  1062. of help

  1063. and hope.

  1064. Like

  1065. wafts

  1066. clustered

  1067. around a

  1068. blazing

  1069. fire,

  1070. we gathered

  1071. about it

  1072. holding our

  1073. hearts to

  1074. its warmth

  1075. and light.

  1076. The

  1077. blacker the

  1078. night around

  1079. us grew,

  1080. the brighter

  1081. and truer

  1082. and more

  1083. beautiful

  1084. burned the

  1085. word of

  1086. God.

  1087. That's the

  1088. name of the

  1089. concentration

  1090. camp they

  1091. were in.

  1092. It took

  1093. place on

  1094. two separate

  1095. levels,

  1096. mutually

  1097. impossible.

  1098. On

  1099. one,

  1100. the

  1101. observable

  1102. external

  1103. life grew

  1104. every day

  1105. more

  1106. horrible.

  1107. The

  1108. other,

  1109. the life

  1110. we lived

  1111. with God

  1112. grew daily

  1113. better,

  1114. truth upon

  1115. truth,

  1116. glory upon

  1117. glory.

  1118. Christian,

  1119. the blacker

  1120. the night

  1121. around us

  1122. grows,

  1123. the brighter

  1124. and truer

  1125. and more

  1126. beautiful

  1127. burns the

  1128. word of

  1129. God.

  1130. Now,

  1131. I had to

  1132. shorten this

  1133. quote so it

  1134. would fit,

  1135. but she

  1136. tells us what

  1137. they were

  1138. reading were

  1139. the great

  1140. promises of

  1141. Romans chapter

  1142. eight.

  1143. The promise

  1144. that nothing

  1145. can separate

  1146. us from the

  1147. love of

  1148. God.

  1149. the promise

  1150. that we

  1151. are more

  1152. than

  1153. conquerors

  1154. through

  1155. him

  1156. who

  1157. loved

  1158. us.

  1159. Then what

  1160. advantage has

  1161. the Jew

  1162. or what

  1163. is the

  1164. value

  1165. of

  1166. circumcision

  1167. much

  1168. in

  1169. every

  1170. way?

  1171. to begin

  1172. with,

  1173. the Jews

  1174. were

  1175. entrusted

  1176. with the

  1177. oracles

  1178. of God.

  1179. Let's

  1180. pray.

  1181. Our

  1182. Father in

  1183. heaven,

  1184. we do

  1185. praise you

  1186. and we

  1187. thank you

  1188. for the

  1189. great

  1190. privilege

  1191. of your

  1192. word.

  1193. We thank

  1194. you that

  1195. it's

  1196. living,

  1197. that you

  1198. brought

  1199. dead

  1200. things

  1201. to life

  1202. when you

  1203. speak.

  1204. You

  1205. brought

  1206. creation

  1207. out of

  1208. nothing

  1209. by your

  1210. words.

  1211. We ask

  1212. that you

  1213. would remind

  1214. us of

  1215. that and

  1216. do it

  1217. again this

  1218. morning,

  1219. that your

  1220. word would

  1221. be at

  1222. work

  1223. powerfully

  1224. in our

  1225. hearts,

  1226. in our

  1227. minds,

  1228. in our

  1229. lives,

  1230. that you

  1231. would bring

  1232. new life

  1233. to us.

  1234. We ask

  1235. these things

  1236. in the mighty

  1237. name of

  1238. Jesus Christ.

  1239. Amen.

  1240. I invite

  1241. you to stand

  1242. for our

  1243. closing hymn.
