  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  11. This week we are continuing our series in the book of Romans,

  12. and before we jump in, I want to make a couple corrections from last week.

  13. A couple of you reminded me that Daniel, in fact, does not appear in Daniel chapter 3.

    Daniel 3 chapter mention

  14. It's just Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

  15. And it is Moses, not Abraham, who's almost killed for failing to circumcise his son.

  16. So I'm going to keep on the straight and narrow path.

  17. This morning I got into the shower. I still have my glasses on, so I'm just trying to make it here, you know.

  18. We are continuing our series in the book of Romans,

  19. and you'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s A.D.,

  20. and it is called Romans for a very simple reason,

  21. which is that it is written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  22. This letter is about the gospel.

  23. It's about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  24. And Paul's hope, as we saw in chapter 1,

  25. is that those who receive this letter would be established in the gospel.

  26. Paul will make many applications, as we've already seen, as we go throughout this letter,

  27. but he is especially focused on the mission and the unity of the church.

  28. And while we will go on many spokes,

  29. we're going to go on many different side quests like we did last week,

  30. we will be constantly returning back to the hub of the gospel.

  31. It is tempting, as I've said many times now,

  32. to come to passages like the one we come to this morning

  33. and believe this is a random section of Scripture making random points.

  34. But in fact, Paul is actually making one argument

  35. from chapters 1 through 3 of Romans,

  36. and it's summed up in verse 23, which we'll get to in just a couple weeks,

  37. for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

  38. Chapter 1, he's establishing that non-religious people fall short of God's glory.

  39. Chapter 2, he established that religious people fall short of God's glory.

  40. Chapter 3, he's been responding to some potential objections from chapter 2,

  41. and soon he will tie it all together.

  42. This week is our last week dealing with these objections

  43. before he really ties it together for us in chapter 3.

  44. Following up from last week, remember we talked about the fact

  45. that the Bible is this great blessing,

  46. that one of the greatest privileges of growing up in the church

  47. is having access to the Word of God.

  48. And so another objection then rises up that Paul wants to respond to,

  49. and it's this, if the Bible is such a great blessing,

  50. why do so many Christians fail?

  51. The Bible is such a great blessing,

  52. why do so many Christians still fail?

  53. And on that theme,

  54. is it actually fair for God to judge the world?

  55. So with those two questions,

  56. I invite you to turn with me now to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  57. We're going to start at verse 3,

  58. and as we come there,

  59. remember that Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5,

    Proverbs 30:5

  60. tells us,

  61. every word of God proves true.

  62. He's a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  63. And so that's why we read now Romans chapter 3,

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  64. starting at verse 3.

  65. What if some were unfaithful?

  66. Does their faithlessness nullify the faithfulness of God?

  67. By no means.

  68. Let God be true,

  69. though everyone were a liar,

  70. as it is written,

  71. that you may be justified in your words

  72. and prevail when you are judged.

  73. But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God,

  74. what shall we say?

  75. That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us?

  76. I speak in a human way.

  77. By no means.

  78. For then how could God judge the world?

  79. But if through my lie,

  80. God's truth abounds to His glory,

  81. why am I still being condemned as a sinner?

  82. And why not do evil that good may come,

  83. as some people slanderously charge us with saying,

  84. their condemnation is just.

  85. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  86. Our Father in heaven,

  87. we do again praise You and we thank You

  88. that You have given us Your very words,

  89. that You as a loving Father instruct Your children,

  90. that You guide us and direct us.

  91. Even more than that,

  92. You show us the great mercy and grace

  93. that You offer us through Your Son.

  94. We ask that You would do that again this morning,

  95. that You would pour out Your Spirit here among us,

  96. that You would make Your Word clear and alive

  97. to our hearts and our minds,

  98. and most of all,

  99. that You would show us, Jesus,

  100. that we would see Him

  101. in all His glory and beauty and authority

  102. and holiness and majesty

  103. and mercy and grace and love.

  104. We ask all of these things

  105. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  106. Amen.

  107. Amen.

  108. Just a few weeks ago,

  109. on October the 3rd,

  110. the New York Times published an article

  111. with this title,

  112. Around Dallas,

  113. the church scandals seem to have no end.

  114. And then the subtitle was this,

  115. In this part of Texas,

  116. a pastor with a clean reputation

  117. is not to be taken for granted.

  118. The article then goes on to discuss

  119. the number of scandals that have happened in Dallas

  120. over the last year.

  121. They tell us that there's a radio station in Dallas

  122. that has been keeping a tally,

  123. and it now contains 17 names,

  124. including five involving criminal charges.

  125. Now, those sorts of articles

  126. raise a lot of questions for us.

  127. One of them is this.

  128. It seems like the Bible perhaps is not so great after all,

  129. and perhaps God isn't so faithful after all.

  130. Because, of course,

  131. if the Bible was and if God was,

  132. how in the world would this be happening?

  133. Is God actually true to his word?

  134. Paul here in this section of Romans 3

  135. is responding to an almost identical objection.

  136. Verse 3 here, he says,

  137. What if some were unfaithful?

  138. Does their faithlessness nullify

  139. the faithfulness of God?

  140. Last week, we talked about the fact

  141. that the Old Testament

  142. was this tremendous blessing to the Jews,

  143. and I told you it was a blessing ultimately

  144. because it showed them Jesus.

  145. If God's word is so powerful,

  146. Paul is saying,

  147. why did the Jews fail so magnificently?

  148. If God's word is so powerful,

  149. why did the Jews fail so magnificently?

  150. If it was such a great privilege,

  151. if it was such a great blessing,

  152. why didn't they do better?

  153. And you just have to think back

  154. to our previous sermon series,

  155. right in the book of Judges,

  156. what did we see time and time again,

  157. if not God's people failing over and over?

  158. Not just the Old Testament.

  159. We could also talk about the New Testament.

  160. If the Jews were so blessed,

  161. if this was such a great thing

  162. for them to have the oracles of God,

  163. why did so many of them reject Jesus when he came?

  164. If the great blessing of the oracles of God,

  165. if the great blessing of the word

  166. is that it shows Jesus,

  167. and yet the people who have it reject Jesus,

  168. how can you say that God is actually faithful?

  169. That doesn't sound like a blessing.

  170. It sounds like a waste.

  171. That's the objection that Paul is raising here,

  172. and he immediately gives a response in verse four.

  173. And he says essentially this,

  174. God's faithfulness shines brightly even in man's sin.

  175. God's faithfulness shines brightly even in man's sin.

  176. Verse four, he says,

  177. by no means let God be true,

  178. though everyone were a liar,

  179. as it is written,

  180. that you may be justified in your words

  181. and prevail when you are judged.

  182. And he's making a quotation from the Old Testament there.

  183. He's quoting from Psalm 51.

  184. And if you're familiar with the Psalms,

  185. you know that Psalm 51 is King David's psalm of repentance

  186. after his great sin with Bathsheba.

  187. He's been exposed.

  188. He's in a sense this religious leader,

  189. this king of God's people,

  190. who's been caught in this extramarital affair.

  191. And he says, look, when God has condemned me in this,

  192. he's actually being faithful.

  193. He's faithful in his judgment.

  194. He's faithful in his punishment.

  195. We saw the same thing.

  196. Deuteronomy chapter seven,

  197. which Jim read for us earlier this morning,

  198. God makes these promises of faithfulness,

  199. promises of his steadfast love.

  200. And then he also makes promises of punishment.

  201. Both of those things are part of God's word.

  202. And so whichever one falls,

  203. God is being true to what he has said.

  204. And so Paul's making a simple point.

  205. Whether God shows mercy or he shows judgment,

  206. God is still faithful.

  207. Whether God shows mercy or judgment,

  208. he is still true to everything that he's promised.

  209. Even in and as he judges,

  210. he's showing that we can trust his character.

  211. And so as we go back and think about these churches in Dallas,

  212. we can ask, how was God faithful?

  213. How is he faithful?

  214. I'm sure there's a number of ways we could answer that.

  215. I'm going to give you three examples

  216. of God being faithful to his promises.

  217. First, he's faithful to Jesus' promise in Luke chapter 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  218. Jesus says this,

  219. nothing is covered up that will not be revealed

  220. or hidden that will not be known.

  221. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark

  222. shall be heard in the light

  223. and what you have whispered in private rooms

  224. shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

  225. Why is it that we know about these 17 pastors

  226. and their failure?

  227. We know because God has honored his promise

  228. that what has been whispered in private rooms

  229. will be shouted from the rooftops.

  230. God's faithful to his people.

  231. He's kept his promise.

  232. He's kept his promise in Galatians chapter six.

  233. Do not be deceived.

  234. God is not mocked.

  235. For whatever one sows, that he will also reap.

  236. We see this failure, right?

  237. We see these things being brought into the light.

  238. That too is an expression of God's faithfulness.

  239. That too is God doing what he said he would do.

  240. And in the midst of that, we might think,

  241. okay, good, God is being faithful.

  242. He's saying that he's going to bring things to light

  243. and he has,

  244. but what about his promise to the church?

  245. We could look again, Matthew chapter 16, verse 18.

    Matthew 16:18

  246. Jesus says this,

  247. on this rock, I will build my church

  248. and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

  249. How can God be faithful?

  250. How can the word be so powerful

  251. in the midst of such failure?

  252. And the answer is this,

  253. God's kingdom continues.

  254. 17 pastors are not powerful enough

  255. to derail the mission of the living God.

  256. Let God be true,

  257. though everyone is a liar.

  258. Paul's reminding them,

  259. God is faithful in every situation.

  260. God is faithful in every circumstance.

  261. Nothing can thwart his purposes.

  262. Nothing can stop his promises.

  263. God is faithful when he shows mercy.

  264. He is faithful when he shows judgment.

  265. We've talked before,

  266. 2 Corinthians chapter 1, verse 20,

    2 Corinthians 1:20

  267. reminds us all the promises of God

  268. are yes and amen in Jesus Christ.

  269. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  270. which we'll get to, you know,

  271. in a few decades,

  272. reminds us, it says,

  273. look, if God gave us his own son,

  274. will he not also with him give us all things?

  275. In other words,

  276. in the midst of the imperfection and scandal

  277. and sin of God's people,

  278. he will build his church.

  279. The gates of hell will not prevail against it.

  280. Let God be true,

  281. though everyone were a liar.

  282. There's a deeper point here for us as well,

  283. that God will accomplish his purposes

  284. no matter what.

  285. One pastor has put it this way,

  286. you cannot stand in the way

  287. of the freight train of God's kingdom.

  288. Your imperfection and sin and failure

  289. cannot thwart or stop

  290. God's purposes and his plan.

  291. Your flawed and imperfect parenting

  292. is not powerful enough

  293. to block God's work

  294. in the life of your child.

  295. Your trauma

  296. from your past

  297. is not so powerful

  298. to stop God

  299. from using you

  300. as his instrument

  301. in this world.

  302. And pastor's failures

  303. are not so great

  304. that God has been blocked

  305. somehow

  306. from working his will

  307. in the city of Dallas.

  308. Let God be true,

  309. though everyone

  310. were a liar.

  311. Now I'm not saying

  312. there aren't real,

  313. deep,

  314. and painful consequences.

  315. I am not saying

  316. it doesn't matter

  317. how you live.

  318. What I am saying

  319. is this.

  320. God is faithful

  321. to his word.

  322. He's faithful

  323. to his people.

  324. What I reminded you of

  325. multiple times

  326. during the series

  327. in Judges,

  328. 2 Timothy 2,

    2 Timothy 2:13

  329. verse 13,

  330. if we are faithless,

  331. he remains faithful,

  332. for he cannot deny himself.

  333. Nothing's changed

  334. since Paul wrote

  335. Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  336. God was faithful

  337. to his people then.

  338. God is faithful

  339. to his people today.

  340. God gave us his son,

  341. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  342. Will he not also

  343. with him

  344. give us

  345. all things?

  346. Nothing can separate us

  347. from the love of God.

  348. In the midst

  349. of man's failures,

  350. God's kingdom

  351. marches on.

  352. God's faithfulness

  353. after addressing that,

  354. Paul goes on

  355. to lay out

  356. another objection.

  357. Okay, Paul,

  358. if man's unfaithfulness

  359. shows God's faithfulness,

  360. isn't sin

  361. kind of a good thing?

  362. That's what's happening

  363. here in verses 5 and 6.

  364. Verse 5,

  365. but if our unrighteousness

  366. serves to show

  367. the righteousness

  368. of God,

  369. what shall we say?

  370. That God is unrighteous

  371. to inflict wrath

  372. on us?

  373. In other words,

  374. hey, look,

  375. you've said here

  376. that when we sin,

  377. it shows God's glory

  378. somehow.

  379. It shows that he's faithful.

  380. Great.

  381. Let's sin more

  382. so we can show

  383. his faithfulness more.

  384. Now, if that doesn't

  385. really make sense,

  386. I want you to think

  387. about it this way.

  388. Many pastors

  389. will explain the gospel

  390. like this.

  391. The gospel is this

  392. bright diamond,

  393. and diamonds look best

  394. on a black background.

  395. Right?

  396. So what you want

  397. is you have to understand

  398. that the gospel

  399. is beautiful

  400. against the background

  401. of our sin,

  402. the backdrop

  403. of our sin.

  404. Now, one of the most

  405. interesting jobs

  406. I think that someone

  407. could have,

  408. maybe it's a boring job,

  409. I'm not sure,

  410. it's to pick the names

  411. of paint colors.

  412. Right?

  413. Who is it that imagines

  414. up all of these things?

  415. And I looked into this,

  416. there are actually

  417. a variety of shades

  418. of black

  419. that you can get.

  420. You might be thinking,

  421. well, if it's a shade

  422. of black,

  423. then it's gray.

  424. False.

  425. Okay?

  426. Here's a list.

  427. You have obsidian black.

  428. There is ink black.

  429. There's also jet black,

  430. coal black,

  431. and leather black.

  432. And so what Paul's

  433. objectors are saying

  434. is, look,

  435. the more we sin,

  436. the darker the shade

  437. of black.

  438. And the brighter

  439. the diamond shines.

  440. So let's sin more.

  441. The more we sin,

  442. the brighter that diamond is.

  443. So why would God judge us?

  444. We're helping him.

  445. We're making God's jewels

  446. look great.

  447. He shouldn't judge us.

  448. We're making his diamond

  449. shine brighter and brighter.

  450. Wow, God,

  451. you're welcome.

  452. Aren't you so glad

  453. for having people like us?

  454. How can you punish us

  455. for making you look so good?

  456. Paul in verse five,

  457. at the end,

  458. starts his response.

  459. He says,

  460. I speak in a human way,

  461. which is his way of saying

  462. only a human

  463. could say something

  464. that stupid.

  465. And then he goes on

  466. in verse six,

  467. by no means,

  468. of course,

  469. this can't be true.

  470. Why?

  471. For then how could God

  472. judge the world?

  473. In other words,

  474. if you follow that logic out,

  475. no one will ever be judged.

  476. You might think that Paul here

  477. would defend the idea

  478. of judgment,

  479. but he doesn't.

  480. He's speaking to a Jewish audience

  481. who are all in

  482. on the concept

  483. of judging the Gentiles.

  484. And so Paul's saying,

  485. your beliefs actually

  486. don't match up.

  487. You want the Gentiles

  488. to be judged,

  489. then you can't make

  490. this argument

  491. end of discussion.

  492. If we follow it through,

  493. then we end up

  494. with zero judgment.

  495. And of course,

  496. you,

  497. my Jewish receivers

  498. of this letter

  499. and me,

  500. Paul,

  501. know that that's

  502. not going to work.

  503. Now,

  504. that might not be

  505. as obvious to us today

  506. because most of us

  507. are in fact not Jewish.

  508. And in our culture,

  509. we are not committed

  510. as people were

  511. in Paul's culture

  512. to the idea

  513. of a judgment.

  514. And so this argument

  515. is not necessarily,

  516. at least on the face,

  517. of it as powerful to us

  518. as it was

  519. to them.

  520. It ended the discussion

  521. for the Jews.

  522. It may not end it for us.

  523. However,

  524. I'd like to suggest this.

  525. If we are truly honest

  526. with ourselves,

  527. we also believe

  528. in judgment.

  529. If we're truly honest,

  530. whether you're a Christian

  531. or a non-Christian,

  532. you believe

  533. in judgment.

  534. You might say you don't.

  535. You might say that

  536. as your stated belief,

  537. right?

  538. And yet,

  539. you cannot live

  540. consistently with that.

  541. Just think for a minute

  542. about the way people

  543. talk about their

  544. political enemies.

  545. Think about the way

  546. people talk about

  547. other people

  548. who vote differently

  549. than they do.

  550. We hear this all the time.

  551. These are words

  552. filled with judgment,

  553. right?

  554. Filled with judgment.

  555. We all make sorts

  556. of moral valuations,

  557. on the one hand,

  558. claiming that we're

  559. more merciful than God,

  560. and then the other hand,

  561. when someone crosses us

  562. or violates us,

  563. our anger rises up.

  564. We actually,

  565. deep down,

  566. long to see justice done.

  567. Whether we admit it or not,

  568. all of us

  569. believe in judgment.

  570. We are closer

  571. to first century Judaism

  572. than we'd like

  573. to admit.

  574. Now, this is on the back

  575. of your worship guide,

  576. speaking of Paul's words here.

  577. Paul asks us

  578. to imagine a world

  579. where there is no judgment,

  580. no accountability,

  581. and no recompense

  582. for evils that are done.

  583. Such a world

  584. is intolerable

  585. and senseless,

  586. degrading our humanity

  587. since what we do

  588. with our lives

  589. would be insignificant

  590. and have no moral value.

  591. Without judgment,

  592. everything would be permitted.

  593. Nothing would be verboten,

  594. and goodness

  595. would vanish

  596. into the midst

  597. of nothingness.

  598. In other words,

  599. do you believe in goodness?

  600. Then you believe

  601. in judgment.

  602. Do you believe

  603. that your actions

  604. in this world

  605. matter at all?

  606. You believe in judgment.

  607. Are there moral things

  608. that you find reprehensible

  609. and believe

  610. should be punished?

  611. you believe

  612. in judgment.

  613. I speak in a human way

  614. by no means,

  615. for then how could God

  616. judge the world?

  617. We all want judgment.

  618. We all want justice to come

  619. if we're truly honest.

  620. In fact,

  621. we demand it, right?

  622. What are protests

  623. about

  624. if not a cry for justice?

  625. The only problem is this.

  626. The catch is this.

  627. We want justice

  628. for other people,

  629. not for ourselves.

  630. We want to be

  631. the dispensers of judgment,

  632. not the receivers

  633. of judgment.

  634. That's the catch.

  635. That's the dark backdrop

  636. against the diamond

  637. of the gospel, right?

  638. That is what Paul

  639. is trying to push us towards.

  640. Back all the way

  641. in chapter one

  642. where he says

  643. there's a righteousness

  644. that comes from faith,

  645. for faith.

  646. Judgment is coming

  647. not just to those

  648. who have hurt us,

  649. but to us as well.

  650. And so there must be

  651. another answer.

  652. We want,

  653. we demand

  654. to live in a world

  655. with judgment.

  656. We just don't want

  657. to receive judgment.

  658. Paul then goes on

  659. to push things

  660. one step further.

  661. Verse six,

  662. how could God

  663. judge the world?

  664. Then verse seven,

  665. he says,

  666. hey,

  667. if you think

  668. that your sin

  669. shows God's glory

  670. even more,

  671. then let's take that

  672. to its logical conclusion.

  673. But if through my lie

  674. God's truth

  675. abounds to his glory,

  676. why am I still

  677. being condemned

  678. as a sinner?

  679. And why not do evil

  680. that good may come?

  681. As some people

  682. slanderously charge us

  683. with saying.

  684. Okay,

  685. so first he responded

  686. to this objection.

  687. Every time we sin,

  688. we're helping God,

  689. so why stop?

  690. Next,

  691. okay,

  692. let's continue it.

  693. Every time we sin,

  694. we're helping God,

  695. so let's sin

  696. more and more.

  697. Let's do it.

  698. Let's do as much

  699. as possible

  700. because every time

  701. we do it,

  702. the more we do it,

  703. the greater God

  704. appears.

  705. and Paul basically

  706. says this,

  707. if you argue for that,

  708. you are arguing

  709. for evil.

  710. If you're arguing

  711. for that,

  712. you're arguing

  713. for evil.

  714. You're not on the

  715. side of the good,

  716. you're on the side

  717. of the wrong.

  718. It's a very simple

  719. argument.

  720. Paul doesn't spend

  721. much time responding

  722. to it.

  723. He concludes with this,

  724. their condemnation

  725. is just.

  726. He's saying,

  727. look,

  728. your argument's so bad.

  729. It's self-condemning.

  730. I'm not going to

  731. waste time

  732. responding to it.

  733. If that's what you think,

  734. then judgment

  735. is coming

  736. for you.

  737. Remember,

  738. I've been telling you

  739. that Paul here

  740. is responding

  741. to this idea

  742. since chapter 2

  743. from the Jews

  744. that somehow

  745. they can presume

  746. on God's grace

  747. that since they're

  748. God's chosen people,

  749. they have access

  750. to circumcision

  751. and the law.

  752. There's nothing else

  753. that they need

  754. to worry about.

  755. And Paul again

  756. is telling them

  757. as he's told them

  758. many times before,

  759. no.

  760. No,

  761. you can't presume

  762. on that.

  763. You will show

  764. God's faithfulness

  765. whether he has mercy

  766. on you

  767. or whether he judges you.

  768. You cannot presume

  769. and live

  770. however you want.

  771. I've also been telling you

  772. that this Romans

  773. is the fifth gospel.

  774. that what Paul teaches

  775. Jesus taught first.

  776. In Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  777. John the Baptist

  778. comes to prepare

  779. the way for Jesus

  780. and he says this,

  781. Do not presume

  782. to say to yourselves,

  783. We have Abraham

  784. as our father.

  785. For I tell you,

  786. God is able

  787. from these stones

  788. to raise up children

  789. for Abraham.

  790. Even now,

  791. the axe is laid

  792. to the root

  793. of the trees.

  794. Every tree,

  795. therefore,

  796. that does not

  797. bear good fruit

  798. is cut down

  799. and thrown

  800. into the fire.

  801. God's glory

  802. is shown

  803. in his mercy.

  804. His glory

  805. is shown

  806. in his judgment.

  807. And so to tie

  808. all of these things together,

  809. I'll simply say this.

  810. No one

  811. wants to live

  812. in a world

  813. without judgment.

  814. And

  815. no one

  816. is prepared

  817. to face

  818. God's judgment.

  819. Say that again.

  820. No one

  821. wants to live

  822. in a world

  823. without judgment.

  824. No one

  825. is prepared

  826. to face

  827. God's judgment.

  828. We want

  829. to be the ones

  830. dishing it out,

  831. not the ones

  832. receiving it.

  833. That second point

  834. drives us back

  835. to the first point.

  836. Our only hope

  837. is this,

  838. that God

  839. is faithful

  840. no matter

  841. what.

  842. That's the only way

  843. we resolve

  844. those things.

  845. How do we

  846. handle it

  847. that we can't

  848. live without judgment

  849. and we can't

  850. face it?

  851. Our only hope

  852. is in Jesus

  853. and Jesus

  854. alone.

  855. After John the Baptist

  856. introduces him,

  857. Jesus goes on

  858. to say this,

  859. John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  860. again,

  861. whoever believes

  862. in the Son

  863. has eternal

  864. life.

  865. Whoever does

  866. not obey

  867. the Son

  868. shall not

  869. see life,

  870. but the wrath

  871. of God

  872. remains on him.

  873. God's judgment

  874. is coming

  875. and it is just.

  876. God's justice

  877. is shown

  878. in his mercy

  879. and his justice

  880. is shown

  881. in his wrath.

  882. Do you believe

  883. in the Son?

  884. Do you have

  885. eternal

  886. life?

  887. If you do,

  888. then you can sing

  889. with us

  890. in our closing hymn.

  891. We're going to say

  892. exactly what it is

  893. that's our hope.

  894. Those he saves

  895. are his delight.

  896. Christ

  897. will hold me fast.

  898. precious

  899. in his holy sight,

  900. he will hold

  901. me fast.

  902. He'll not let

  903. my soul

  904. be lost.

  905. His promises

  906. shall last.

  907. Right?

  908. Let God be true

  909. through everyone

  910. be a liar.

  911. Bought by him

  912. at such a cost,

  913. he will hold

  914. me fast.

  915. Let's pray.

  916. Our Father

  917. in heaven,

  918. we do

  919. thank you

  920. and praise you

  921. that you are

  922. true to your words.

  923. That your faithfulness

  924. is proved

  925. no matter

  926. what man does.

  927. We ask

  928. that you would,

  929. for those of us

  930. who are Christians,

  931. that you would

  932. establish

  933. our belief

  934. in the Son

  935. who has eternal life.

  936. For those of us

  937. who are not,

  938. you would show us

  939. the contradiction

  940. that we want judgment

  941. but we can't face judgment.

  942. That we would run

  943. to the only one

  944. who's offered

  945. to take it for us.

  946. We ask all of these things

  947. in his name,

  948. the mighty name

  949. of Jesus Christ.

  950. Amen.

  951. Amen.

  952. I invite you to stand

  953. for our closing hymn.

  954. Amen.

  955. Amen.

  956. Amen.

  957. Amen.
