  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  9. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  11. This morning, we're continuing our series in the book of Romans, and as I mentioned that, I should say,

  12. we started Romans at the very beginning in chapter 1.

  13. I was good about saying, hey, we're going to break at some point and take a pause,

  14. and we're coming up to that.

  15. So we're going to finish Romans chapter 3, which is sort of this concise argument that I've been telling you.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  16. It goes together.

  17. Paul's trying to say one thing in Romans chapters 1 through 3.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  18. We're going to break, and then we probably will not come back to Romans chapter 4 until sometime in 2025.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  19. So I don't want you to be caught off guard by that.

  20. But we are in Romans this morning, and you'll remember that Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD,

  21. and it is called Romans for a very simple reason, which is that it is written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  22. This letter is about the gospel.

  23. It's about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  24. And Paul's hope in writing it, as we saw in chapter 1, is that these people in these churches would be established in the gospel.

  25. Paul has many applications.

  26. We have already and we will explore many different topics.

  27. And yet he always returns back to, he has a special focus on the mission and the unity of the church.

  28. And so there are many spokes, many different things we're going to explore.

  29. We're going to be constantly, even this morning, coming back to the hub of the gospel.

  30. In these verses, verses 19 through 20, Paul is going to put the last nail in the coffin,

  31. the summary of the argument that he's been making in these three chapters in Romans.

  32. He's going to bring to conclusion, in a sense, preparing us for next week,

  33. where he explains again the good news of the gospel,

  34. the conclusion that everyone, Jews and Gentiles, deserve God's judgment.

  35. Everyone needs God's mercy.

  36. And so it's with that that I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  37. You can turn in your Bible.

  38. You can turn on your phone.

  39. You can turn in your worship guide.

  40. No matter where you turn, Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  41. every word of God proves true.

  42. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  43. And so that's why we read now Romans chapter 3, starting at verse 19.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  44. Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law,

  45. so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God.

  46. For by works of the law, no human being will be justified in his sight,

  47. since through the law comes knowledge of sin.

  48. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  49. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and thank you as we do every Sunday,

  50. that you have given us your words, that you speak to us, that you instruct us,

  51. that you haven't abandoned us or left us alone.

  52. But instead, you're a good father who cares for his children,

  53. who guides them, who comforts them, who directs them.

  54. And so we ask that you would do that again this morning,

  55. that you would help us to understand and believe what you've written here in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  56. And most of all, that you would help us to see Jesus Christ,

  57. that we would grow in our love and our affection, our reverence and our all,

  58. our obedience to him.

  59. And we ask these things in his mighty name. Amen.

  60. Amen.

  61. Amen.

  62. In 1998 or 1999, my family decided to finally become a dog family.

  63. And we adopted a dog from our local humane society.

  64. We had had two guinea pigs before that who quickly became very boring

  65. and were greatly ignored.

  66. And we took the name that the shelter had already given to this dog, which was Tramp.

  67. And Tramp had presumably, we think, escaped from his previous owners

  68. because he tried many times to escape from us.

  69. He liked trying to get out from under the fence and climb over all sorts of things,

  70. which I think was just kind of genetic in him.

  71. But was one great advantage that we had with Tramp adopting him when he was already a year old,

  72. and it was this, his previous owners had already housebroken him.

  73. And so we didn't have to worry about training Tramp to go outside to use the bathroom.

  74. Although, as you know, if you're a pet owner, whether it's a cat or a dog,

  75. you may have that problem.

  76. You may have that problem if your pet is young,

  77. and you may have that problem if your pet is old.

  78. And this is something that carpet cleaning companies have figured out.

  79. And so they have a technique that they use to show you your deep need for deep cleaning.

  80. There's a pastor in Idaho named Stephen Kingsley,

  81. who at one point ran a carpet cleaning business.

  82. And he says this,

  83. In our family carpet cleaning business,

  84. we offered a special service for removing pet urine odors

  85. to show potential customers their need for the service.

  86. I would darken the room and then turn on a powerful black light.

  87. The black light caused urine crystals to glow brightly.

  88. To the horror of the homeowner,

  89. every drop and dribble could be seen,

  90. not only on the carpet,

  91. but usually on the walls, drapes, furniture,

  92. and even on lampshades.

  93. One homeowner begged me to shut off the light.

  94. They said,

  95. I can't bear to see any more.

  96. I don't care what it costs.

  97. Please clean it up.

  98. Another woman said,

  99. I'll never be comfortable in my home again.

  100. Now speaking of that,

  101. we are picking up where we left off last week.

  102. And remember,

  103. Paul tells us these passages from the Old Testament,

  104. and his point there,

  105. which he sums up here,

  106. the law does not save you.

  107. It exposes you.

  108. It reveals you.

  109. We might say it another way.

  110. The Ten Commandments are the black light,

  111. which reveal the urine of your sin.

  112. And if you think that it's inappropriate,

  113. if it's scandalous to talk about urine in church,

  114. I'll tell you what's more scandalous.

  115. What's more scandalous is our sin against a holy God.

  116. That's what's more scandalous.

  117. That's what's more shocking.

  118. One pastor puts it this way,

  119. The law is not a checklist we keep.

  120. It is a benchmark we fail.

  121. The law is not a checklist we keep.

  122. It's a benchmark we fail.

  123. That raises the question, though,

  124. what do we mean when we say the law?

  125. Paul tells us here, verse 19,

  126. Now we know that whatever the law says,

  127. it speaks to those who are under the law.

  128. Well, thankfully, this is in context.

  129. Paul has just given us these quotations from the Old Testament,

  130. mostly from the Psalms,

  131. in verses 13 through 18.

  132. That's what we saw last week.

  133. He gave us these quotations.

  134. That's why, by the way,

  135. if you are using an ESV Bible,

  136. if you look at verses 13 through 18,

  137. you'll see a bunch of quotation marks.

  138. The reason you see those quotation marks

  139. is because Paul has simply been giving a list of passages

  140. from the Old Testament.

  141. Those words in verses 13 and 18 are not really his.

  142. They're the words of those who came before him,

  143. most of them from the Psalms.

  144. And so when he says,

  145. we know what the law says,

  146. he's meaning by the law the entire Old Testament.

  147. Look at these things I've just quoted

  148. from the Psalms, from the prophets.

  149. Those things that I reminded you of,

  150. that is what applies to you.

  151. We even saw this at the beginning of chapter 3.

  152. Remember, chapter 3, verses 1 through 2,

  153. he says,

  154. the oracles of God are the great blessing

  155. that the Jewish people have been given.

  156. And yet those same oracles,

  157. again, this is last week,

  158. show, they reveal our sin.

  159. They show our sin in our mouth or our words for all of us,

  160. and they show violence for some of this.

  161. Paul then is saying once again

  162. and what he has said many times

  163. in the last couple chapters,

  164. which is this.

  165. You think having the Old Testament gives you a pass?

  166. You think the blessing of possessing the law is enough?

  167. No.

  168. It's the very opposite.

  169. It doesn't give you a pass.

  170. It doesn't cover your sin.

  171. It shows your sin.

  172. It doesn't excuse your sin.

  173. It reveals your sin.

  174. Reveals the sins of Jewish people

  175. who think they're okay because they're Jews.

  176. Reveals the sins of religious people

  177. who think they're okay because they're religious.

  178. Paul is saying this.

  179. You know from the Old Testament

  180. what God requires.

  181. But have you done it?

  182. We might say, Christian,

  183. you know from the Old and New Testaments

  184. what God requires.

  185. But have we done it?

  186. All of it.

  187. Paul then goes on to say

  188. that whatever the law speaks,

  189. it speaks to those who are under the law.

  190. Under the law here literally means in the law.

  191. In other words,

  192. those who have access to God's commands.

  193. In other words, he's saying

  194. whoever's been given what God says,

  195. whether it's Jews or religious people,

  196. those people are accountable,

  197. as we saw in chapter two,

  198. for what they've been given.

  199. And what happens

  200. when we see this clearly?

  201. Well, he goes on to tell us

  202. that same verse, verse 19,

  203. so that every mouth may be stopped.

  204. The illustration here is of someone

  205. who's in a courtroom.

  206. They're being accused.

  207. All the evidence has been presented.

  208. And the evidence is so clear,

  209. so irrefutable,

  210. so damning,

  211. that when they're asked,

  212. how do you plead,

  213. they don't say innocent or guilty.

  214. They can't say anything.

  215. That's how overwhelming it is.

  216. That's what the Christian,

  217. what the Jew,

  218. what the reader of this passage

  219. is meant to feel

  220. after verses 13 through 18.

  221. That's what they're meant to feel

  222. as they review everything

  223. that God has given in his word,

  224. that as we stand

  225. against the standard of God's holy law,

  226. there is no response.

  227. Remember, Paul's been closing every door.

  228. He's been cinching every loophole

  229. so that there is no way to get out.

  230. There is burning clarity

  231. about the guilt of every human being.

  232. He's saying when you compare yourself

  233. to God's law,

  234. the case is so devastating

  235. that it's what we might call

  236. an open and shut case.

  237. No one should make it

  238. through chapter one,

  239. chapter two,

  240. and chapter three of Romans

  241. and get to this point

  242. and think,

  243. you know, actually I'm good.

  244. None of what Paul says

  245. applies to me.

  246. No, he says even more than that.

  247. It's not just that it applies to you.

  248. Again, verse 19,

  249. the whole world

  250. may be held accountable

  251. to God.

  252. That phrase held accountable

  253. actually means guilty here.

  254. Remember we talked last week

  255. about what Paul says

  256. in verse 18.

  257. He says there's no fear of God

  258. before their eyes.

  259. And I told you having the fear of God

  260. means having a right view of God.

  261. It means understanding

  262. that God is in fact

  263. the judge of all the earth.

  264. And so Paul is saying

  265. as all of humanity

  266. stands before God

  267. and he functions as judge,

  268. our mouths are stopped.

  269. Because the black light

  270. of God's law

  271. reveals our sin.

  272. It might have looked good

  273. before we looked at the law.

  274. We might have thought

  275. we were great people

  276. before we understood

  277. the Ten Commandments.

  278. Now our mouths

  279. are stopped.

  280. What Paul teaches

  281. Jesus taught first.

  282. Remember Jesus'

  283. Sermon on the Mount

  284. Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  285. He takes the Ten Commandments

  286. and says,

  287. hey, you might think

  288. that you're good.

  289. You might think

  290. you've kept all of these.

  291. You actually haven't.

  292. Because it's not just

  293. about the action

  294. but about the heart.

  295. And so Jesus gives

  296. some specific examples.

  297. You think you're good?

  298. You've never murdered anyone?

  299. Well, guess what?

  300. If you've ever cursed

  301. your brother

  302. then you're guilty of murder.

  303. You've never committed adultery?

  304. You think you're good?

  305. Guess what?

  306. If you've ever lusted

  307. after someone

  308. you've committed adultery.

  309. Of course,

  310. those are just

  311. a couple of examples.

  312. The law exposes us

  313. in so many places.

  314. We are commanded

  315. to honor God

  316. with our wealth

  317. but we honor ourselves

  318. instead.

  319. The fourth commandment

  320. tells us

  321. rest is a non-negotiable.

  322. And yet somehow

  323. we don't trust God enough

  324. to take a break.

  325. The Psalms tell us

  326. over and over again

  327. that we run to God

  328. first in prayer.

  329. But instead

  330. we run first

  331. to addictions

  332. and distractions.

  333. Jesus tells us

  334. to love our neighbors

  335. as ourselves

  336. but instead

  337. we mock them

  338. and discount them.

  339. The black light

  340. reveals

  341. so

  342. much.

  343. For by the works

  344. of the law

  345. no human being

  346. will be justified

  347. in his sight

  348. since through the law

  349. comes knowledge

  350. of sin.

  351. I mentioned this phrase

  352. earlier in our worship service

  353. during our confession

  354. of faith.

  355. This idea

  356. that no human being

  357. will be justified

  358. in God's sight.

  359. And so you already

  360. have a sense

  361. of what it means

  362. to be justified.

  363. It means to have

  364. this right standing

  365. before God

  366. that you and God

  367. are in relationship

  368. with one another.

  369. Sort of what I talk about

  370. when we take communion

  371. that if God

  372. has invited us

  373. to a table

  374. that means we're

  375. at peace with him.

  376. Our sins

  377. have been forgiven.

  378. Christ's righteousness

  379. has been credited

  380. to us.

  381. And Paul tells us here

  382. that's not going to happen

  383. through works

  384. of the law.

  385. In other words

  386. there is nothing

  387. we can do

  388. to earn anything

  389. from God

  390. or to prove

  391. anything to God.

  392. And the works

  393. of the law

  394. certainly won't help.

  395. Our behavior

  396. certainly won't help

  397. and we find out

  398. exactly why.

  399. Verse 20 again

  400. since through the law

  401. comes knowledge

  402. of sin.

  403. And Paul's highlighting

  404. here a critical point.

  405. Shows up in other letters

  406. that he's written.

  407. The law can show sin.

  408. It cannot heal sin.

  409. The law can expose

  410. the heart.

  411. It cannot change

  412. the heart.

  413. The black light

  414. shows the urine.

  415. The black light

  416. will never

  417. clean

  418. the urine.

  419. The problem

  420. isn't the black light

  421. right?

  422. The problem

  423. is the stain.

  424. The problem

  425. is not the law.

  426. There's nothing wrong

  427. with the law.

  428. The problem

  429. with sin.

  430. The law

  431. is never intended

  432. to heal

  433. or restore.

  434. The law

  435. will show us

  436. our need.

  437. It will not

  438. meet our need.

  439. The law

  440. will show us

  441. the problem.

  442. It will not

  443. fix

  444. the problem.

  445. We see this phrase

  446. too in verse 20.

  447. It says no human

  448. being will be

  449. justified

  450. in his sight.

  451. Literally there

  452. it says no flesh

  453. will be justified.

  454. And so Paul's

  455. highlighting again

  456. the weakness

  457. of humanity.

  458. We could think

  459. of Elrond

  460. the elf

  461. and the lord

  462. of the rings

  463. when he says

  464. that short sentence

  465. men

  466. are weak.

  467. That's what

  468. Paul's saying

  469. here.

  470. Men are weak.

  471. Men are weak.

  472. They need

  473. something

  474. greater

  475. than the law.

  476. Now I've been

  477. telling you

  478. for many weeks

  479. now that in

  480. chapters 1

  481. through 3

  482. Paul is

  483. saying one

  484. thing.

  485. And the one

  486. thing he's saying

  487. will come next

  488. week in verse 23.

  489. All have sinned

  490. and fall short

  491. of the glory

  492. of God.

  493. That raises

  494. a question

  495. though.

  496. Why does it

  497. take three

  498. chapters?

  499. Why couldn't

  500. Paul have told

  501. us verse 23

  502. right up front?

  503. Right?

  504. Why could we

  505. not have heard

  506. you know the

  507. righteousness of

  508. God?

  509. It's from

  510. faith for

  511. faith to

  512. all who

  513. believe.

  514. And then we

  515. just jump.

  516. We could

  517. skip basically

  518. two chapters

  519. and go to

  520. verse 23.

  521. The reason

  522. is this.

  523. Paul wants

  524. us to

  525. understand

  526. with

  527. burning

  528. clarity

  529. the bad

  530. news of

  531. the gospel.

  532. And Paul

  533. wants us

  534. to understand

  535. the bad

  536. news of

  537. the gospel

  538. with that

  539. sort of

  540. clarity

  541. so that

  542. we can

  543. finally

  544. and fully

  545. see

  546. the good

  547. news of

  548. the gospel.

  549. It makes

  550. no sense

  551. what verse

  552. 24 will

  553. tell us

  554. if we

  555. don't

  556. understand

  557. and embrace

  558. and admit

  559. verse 23.

  560. There is

  561. no point

  562. in telling

  563. us

  564. Jesus

  565. offers

  566. you his

  567. righteousness

  568. if we

  569. don't

  570. understand

  571. our need.

  572. And so

  573. Paul goes

  574. verse by

  575. verse,

  576. argument by

  577. argument for

  578. three chapters

  579. so that we

  580. would not

  581. miss this.

  582. that our

  583. only hope

  584. in life

  585. and in

  586. death

  587. is that

  588. we are

  589. saved by

  590. our Lord

  591. Jesus

  592. Christ.

  593. He wants

  594. us to

  595. know

  596. Jesus

  597. is the

  598. only

  599. option,

  600. he's the

  601. only way

  602. of escape.

  603. That's why

  604. he answers

  605. every excuse

  606. refutes

  607. every argument.

  608. That's why

  609. he spends

  610. chapter one

  611. speaking about

  612. the lack

  613. of excuses

  614. for the

  615. non-religious.

  616. That's why

  617. he spends

  618. chapter two

  619. speaking about

  620. the lack

  621. of excuses

  622. for the

  623. religious

  624. so that

  625. in chapter

  626. three he

  627. can show

  628. us the

  629. great beauty

  630. and clarity

  631. of the

  632. gospel

  633. so that

  634. we cannot

  635. escape

  636. our great

  637. need.

  638. Stephen

  639. Kingsley,

  640. the pastor

  641. from Idaho

  642. who cleaned

  643. carpets,

  644. goes on

  645. to say

  646. this,

  647. the

  648. offense

  649. was there

  650. all the

  651. time

  652. but it

  653. was invisible

  654. until the

  655. right light

  656. exposed it.

  657. It would

  658. have been

  659. cruel to

  660. show customers

  661. the extent

  662. of their

  663. problem

  664. and then

  665. say too

  666. bad for

  667. you

  668. and then

  669. walk away.

  670. I brought

  671. the light

  672. so they

  673. might desperately

  674. want my

  675. cleaning

  676. services.

  677. brothers and

  678. sisters,

  679. Paul has

  680. spent three

  681. chapters

  682. explaining

  683. the extent

  684. of human

  685. sin so

  686. that we

  687. would want

  688. the gospel.

  689. Paul has

  690. spent verse

  691. after verse

  692. unfolding how

  693. bad it is

  694. so that we

  695. would see

  696. our need

  697. for Jesus

  698. Christ.

  699. carpets

  700. can't

  701. clean

  702. themselves.

  703. They

  704. need the

  705. power and

  706. mercy

  707. of someone

  708. else.

  709. Christian,

  710. or if you're

  711. not a

  712. Christian,

  713. you cannot

  714. clean

  715. yourself.

  716. You need

  717. the power

  718. and mercy

  719. of someone

  720. else.

  721. to

  722. there is

  723. one who

  724. offers to

  725. cleanse

  726. us.

  727. There is

  728. one who

  729. offers to

  730. make us

  731. right with

  732. God,

  733. and it

  734. is our

  735. Lord and

  736. Savior,

  737. Jesus

  738. Christ.

  739. He's the

  740. one who

  741. lived the

  742. life that

  743. we should

  744. have lived

  745. and credits

  746. that to

  747. our account.

  748. He's the

  749. one who

  750. dies the

  751. death that

  752. we should

  753. have died

  754. and removes

  755. the punishment

  756. that we

  757. deserve.

  758. In his

  759. sermon on

  760. these verses,

  761. Dr.

  762. Martin Lloyd

  763. Jones ends

  764. by quoting

  765. the hymn,

  766. The Solid

  767. Rock,

  768. because that's

  769. what Paul is

  770. driving us

  771. towards.

  772. On Christ

  773. the solid

  774. rock I

  775. stand,

  776. all other

  777. ground is

  778. sinking

  779. sand.

  780. Let's pray.

  781. Our

  782. Father in

  783. heaven,

  784. we do

  785. praise you.

  786. and thank

  787. you that

  788. you do

  789. not gloss

  790. over the

  791. truth,

  792. you don't

  793. quickly pass

  794. it by,

  795. you don't

  796. mutter it

  797. under your

  798. breath,

  799. but instead

  800. you make

  801. it clear

  802. and plain

  803. to us.

  804. We ask

  805. that you

  806. would do

  807. that again,

  808. that we

  809. would see

  810. with great

  811. clarity

  812. our desperate

  813. need for

  814. you,

  815. and that

  816. would move

  817. us to

  818. embrace you

  819. and follow

  820. you like

  821. we have

  822. never before.

  823. and we

  824. ask these

  825. things in

  826. Jesus'

  827. name,

  828. amen.

  829. I invite you

  830. to stand

  831. for our

  832. closing hymn.
