  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today. A special welcome if you are new or visiting with us.

  3. We're glad that you're here. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  5. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  6. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  7. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  8. This morning, we are continuing our series in the book of Romans, but we're also finishing it in one sense.

  9. I warned you last week that we are going to make it to the end of chapter three and then we're going to pause.

  10. Okay, so we will not return to chapter four of Romans until perhaps summer or fall of 2025.

  11. And so I'm about to tell you for the last time this year about the letter to Romans.

  12. Romans is a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD.

  13. It is called Romans for a very simple reason, which is that it is written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  14. This letter to the Romans is about the gospel.

  15. It is about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  16. Paul's hope in writing this letter is that these people in these churches would be established in the gospel.

  17. And as he does that, Paul makes many applications and explores many things,

  18. but he constantly returns to and is focused on the mission and the unity of the church.

  19. And while there are many spokes in the book of Romans,

  20. they always return back to the hub of the gospel.

  21. Last week, we took a look at verses 25 and 26,

  22. understanding the wrath of God and his goodness as our Father,

  23. how he is bringing evil once and for all to an end.

  24. And now we look at the very last verses of chapter three of Romans,

  25. the point that in a sense Paul has been driving to

  26. after his explanation of the gospel in verses 23 and 24,

  27. which is that if it is true what he's told us in chapter one and chapter two and chapter three,

  28. that's true,

  29. then what we need to do,

  30. what we must do is rely and trust on God alone.

  31. That's how Paul ends this chapter.

  32. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter three.

  33. You can turn in your Bible.

  34. You can turn on your phone.

  35. You can turn in your worship guide.

  36. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  37. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse five tells us,

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  38. every word of God proves true.

  39. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  40. And so that's why we read now Romans chapter three,

  41. starting at verse 27.

  42. Then what becomes of our boasting?

  43. It is excluded.

  44. By what kind of law?

  45. By a law of works?

  46. No, but by the law of faith.

  47. For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.

  48. Or is God the God of Jews only?

  49. Is he not the God of Gentiles also?

  50. Yes, of Gentiles also.

  51. Since God is one who will justify the circumcised by faith

  52. and the uncircumcised through faith,

  53. do we then overthrow the law by this faith?

  54. By no means.

  55. On the contrary, we uphold the law.

  56. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  57. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and we thank you as we do every week

  58. that you have called us to worship you

  59. and you've spoken to us in your word.

  60. We confess this morning that we are easily distracted,

  61. that our hearts are attracted to many things,

  62. that often we lose the plot and forget what you've told us in your word,

  63. the hope that you've set out for us in the gospel.

  64. And so we ask for your help again.

  65. We ask that you would pour out your Holy Spirit in a special way among us now

  66. to open our ears and our eyes and our hearts,

  67. that you would help us to see and understand clearly what you have for us

  68. in Romans chapter 3.

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  69. And we ask that you would use it to transform us,

  70. to make us more and more into the image of your Son.

  71. And we ask these things in his mighty name.

  72. Amen.

  73. In 2009, Jeanette Walls came out with her book called Half Broke Horses,

  74. in which she tells the story of her grandmother named Lily,

  75. Lily Casey Smith, who grew up in West Texas in the early 1900s.

  76. And her book opens with a story from Lily's childhood,

  77. when Lily was 10 years old.

  78. So this is around 1910 or 1911.

  79. And there is a flash flood in the month of August.

  80. And so they're in West Texas.

  81. This flash flood happens.

  82. And Lily realizes that her and her two younger siblings

  83. will not be able to outrun the flood.

  84. And so they're stuck in this cow pasture.

  85. The water is coming too fast.

  86. Lily is the oldest, takes responsibility for her younger siblings.

  87. They find a cottonwood tree,

  88. and they climb up into it just in time.

  89. As they make it onto the branch of the cottonwood tree,

  90. this six-foot wall of water hits the tree.

  91. And so they realize they've just made it in the nick of time.

  92. Now, that's just the first step, right,

  93. to make it up into the tree.

  94. They have something that's actually more challenging,

  95. which is that night is coming.

  96. And for them to survive, they must stay awake.

  97. Because what happens if you're sitting on the limb of a tree and you fall asleep?

  98. You're going to head into the water, right?

  99. The six-foot wall.

  100. And so Lily, as the oldest, takes responsibility for her two younger siblings and goes to work.

  101. She has them switch places on the branch when their arms begin to get tired

  102. so they can have new muscles holding themselves up.

  103. She keeps her siblings awake by quizzing them with all the things that they know.

  104. She quizzes them on their multiplication tables.

  105. She runs through presidents and state capitals with them.

  106. She runs through the definition of words,

  107. anything that will help them make it through the night.

  108. Her youngest sister, Helen, at one point says,

  109. I can't hold on any longer.

  110. And Lily says, yes, you can.

  111. You can because you have to.

  112. And so these three children miraculously make it through the night.

  113. The next day, the water recedes, just in time for another conflict to begin.

  114. They make it down the tree.

  115. Lily and her siblings make it to their childhood home,

  116. where their parents, as you can imagine, are worried sick to receive them.

  117. Her mother comes running out of the house, and we're told this.

  118. She sank to her knees, clasped her hands in front of her,

  119. and started praying up to the heavens,

  120. thanking the Lord for delivering her children from the flood.

  121. It was she, the mom, who had saved us, she declared,

  122. by staying up all night praying.

  123. And so she says to her children,

  124. you get down on your knees and thank your guardian angel,

  125. and thank me too.

  126. Now, Lily is completely put out by this.

  127. She says this,

  128. The way I saw it, I was the one who'd saved us,

  129. not mom and not some guardian angel.

  130. No one was up in that cottonwood tree except the three of us.

  131. Then Lily goes to her talk to her dad and says,

  132. There weren't no guardian angel, dad.

  133. She explains how she had been the one who got them into the cottonwood tree.

  134. She was the one who figured out how to have them switch places.

  135. She was the one who ran them through what they knew to keep them awake.

  136. Her mom wants credit for her prayers.

  137. Lily wants credit for her work.

  138. And is there any space or room for God in the midst of that?

  139. Romans chapter 3, verses 27 through 31 asks one piercing and critical question.

    Romans 3:27–31

  140. Who do you give credit to for your life?

  141. Who do you give credit to for your life?

  142. For your success?

  143. Who do you believe deserves the thanks?

  144. Lily has a lot of clarity on who should be thanked.

  145. Lily's mom has tremendous clarity on who should be thanked,

  146. although they have different answers.

  147. This passage raises even further a question,

  148. not just who do you thank,

  149. can you thank yourself?

  150. That's what Lily and her mom are arguing about.

  151. Okay, there was this flood.

  152. Everyone was saved.

  153. Who gets the credit?

  154. I think if we're honest,

  155. many of us feel that story,

  156. even if we don't say it out loud.

  157. Yes, I know as a good Christian,

  158. I'm supposed to give thanks to God, right?

  159. I'm supposed to recognize his sovereign work in the world

  160. and that everything that I have comes from him.

  161. And what about my credit?

  162. What about what I did?

  163. Sure, I'll thank God.

  164. I want my due too.

  165. That's what Paul's getting at here in verse 27.

  166. He asks this question,

  167. then what becomes of our boasting?

  168. And he's asking this question

  169. because of everything that's come before

  170. in the book of Romans.

  171. Remember, I've told you that chapters one through three

  172. are driving in one direction.

  173. Paul has been moving,

  174. while it may not have seemed this way,

  175. in a straight line.

  176. So when he says what becomes of our boasting,

  177. he means what becomes of our boasting

  178. in light of everything that has come before?

  179. What becomes of our boasting

  180. in light of the fact that chapter one,

  181. the Gentiles or the non-religious deserve God's wrath?

  182. What becomes of our boasting in light of chapter two

  183. that the Jews or religious people

  184. also deserve God's wrath?

  185. What becomes of our boasting in light of chapter three

  186. that our only hope is in the gospel.

  187. If the gospel is true,

  188. can we congratulate ourselves?

  189. That's what Paul's asking.

  190. If the gospel is true,

  191. can we pat ourselves on the back?

  192. If the gospel is true,

  193. can we take credit for our salvation?

  194. If the gospel is true,

  195. do we look down on people

  196. who haven't made it as far as we have?

  197. What becomes of our boasting?

  198. And the answer,

  199. the answer to the question,

  200. can we pat ourselves on the back,

  201. is this, no.

  202. No.

  203. Bet you didn't see that coming.

  204. Verse 27,

  205. it is excluded.

  206. There is no room

  207. for anyone but God and God alone

  208. to receive the credit.

  209. If you're rich,

  210. or at least well off,

  211. who do you thank for your wealth?

  212. If you're successful,

  213. or at least you've done good enough,

  214. who do you thank for your accomplishments?

  215. If you're healthy,

  216. or at least healthy enough,

  217. who gets the credit

  218. for your lifestyle?

  219. When the doors are closed,

  220. and all hearts are exposed,

  221. what do you really believe

  222. is the foundation of your life?

  223. when the truth comes out,

  224. what will we see

  225. as our real North Star?

  226. And what do our hearts

  227. and lives

  228. and minds

  229. reveal

  230. about our anchor?

  231. Remember,

  232. I repeated this many times

  233. in the book of Judges.

  234. Psalm 127,

  235. Unless the Lord

  236. builds the house,

  237. those who build it

  238. labor in vain.

  239. Unless the Lord

  240. watches over the city,

  241. the watchman

  242. stays awake

  243. in vain.

  244. I didn't quote

  245. the second part,

  246. though.

  247. Same psalm.

  248. It is in vain

  249. that you rise up early

  250. and go late to rest,

  251. eating the bread

  252. of anxious toil,

  253. for he gives

  254. to his beloved sleep.

  255. Who gets credit

  256. for your life?

  257. During the book of Judges,

  258. I also told you

  259. about Psalm 20,

    Psalms 20:7

  260. verse 7.

  261. Some trust in chariots

  262. and some in horses,

  263. but we trust

  264. in the name

  265. of the Lord,

  266. our God.

  267. And we just sang this

  268. a few minutes ago,

  269. right before the sermon.

  270. To this I hold,

  271. my hope is only Jesus.

  272. All the glory

  273. evermore to him.

  274. When the race

  275. is complete,

  276. still my lips

  277. shall repeat,

  278. yet not I,

  279. but through Christ

  280. in me.

  281. Then what

  282. becomes

  283. of our boasting?

  284. It is

  285. excluded.

  286. of course,

  287. Paul here

  288. is ultimately

  289. discussing more

  290. than wealth

  291. and accomplishments

  292. and health.

  293. Ultimately,

  294. what he's discussing

  295. is salvation.

  296. Those who've been

  297. redeemed by God,

  298. who've been bought

  299. by him,

  300. who've been purchased

  301. at a price.

  302. You might ask this,

  303. Christian,

  304. why did God

  305. redeem you?

  306. Did God

  307. redeem you

  308. because you were

  309. smart enough

  310. or cunning enough?

  311. Why did you end up

  312. at Cheyenne Mountain

  313. Presbyterian Church

  314. worshiping God

  315. with his people?

  316. Was it because

  317. you lined up

  318. the right things

  319. in the right way?

  320. Was it because

  321. you figured out

  322. some secret

  323. that other people

  324. were just not

  325. smart enough

  326. to figure out?

  327. Is it because

  328. you made

  329. the sacrifices

  330. required to live

  331. a holy life

  332. before God?

  333. No.

  334. Paul tells us

  335. it's this

  336. and this alone

  337. because

  338. and only

  339. because

  340. God

  341. had mercy

  342. on you.

  343. Then what

  344. becomes of our

  345. boasting?

  346. It is

  347. excluded.

  348. Why though?

  349. Why is it

  350. that boasting

  351. is excluded?

  352. Paul goes on

  353. to answer that.

  354. He says,

  355. By what kind

  356. of law?

  357. By a law

  358. of works?

  359. No,

  360. but by the

  361. law of faith.

  362. And here

  363. the word

  364. law is used

  365. differently

  366. at different

  367. times in the

  368. book of Romans.

  369. In this instance

  370. he's using

  371. law to mean

  372. a principle.

  373. And so we

  374. could read

  375. verse 27

  376. in this way.

  377. By a

  378. principle

  379. of works?

  380. No,

  381. by the

  382. principle

  383. of faith.

  384. And so to

  385. understand that

  386. we have to

  387. understand the

  388. difference between

  389. works and

  390. faith.

  391. Works

  392. is a

  393. life in

  394. which you

  395. rely on

  396. what you

  397. have done

  398. and will

  399. do.

  400. If you live

  401. a life of

  402. works,

  403. you rely on

  404. what you

  405. have done

  406. and will

  407. do.

  408. By the

  409. way,

  410. if that's

  411. your principle,

  412. you can

  413. boast.

  414. If your

  415. life rests

  416. on what you

  417. have done

  418. and will

  419. do,

  420. boasting

  421. should not

  422. be excluded.

  423. you should

  424. be able to

  425. boast in

  426. whatever you

  427. want to,

  428. right?

  429. Faith,

  430. very different.

  431. A life

  432. relying on

  433. what God

  434. has done

  435. and will

  436. do.

  437. Faith

  438. is the

  439. life relying

  440. on what

  441. God has

  442. done

  443. and will

  444. do.

  445. And of

  446. course,

  447. if that's

  448. your principle,

  449. you can't

  450. boast

  451. because God

  452. is the

  453. one who

  454. has done

  455. it.

  456. You'll

  457. see this

  458. on page

  459. eight of

  460. your worship

  461. guide,

  462. clarifying

  463. this contrast

  464. for us

  465. between faith

  466. and works.

  467. Faith is

  468. self-renouncing.

  469. Works are

  470. self-congratulatory.

  471. Faith looks

  472. to what God

  473. does.

  474. Works have

  475. respect to

  476. what we

  477. are.

  478. These two

  479. things could

  480. not be

  481. farther

  482. apart.

  483. Lower down

  484. on the

  485. same page.

  486. Works earn,

  487. but faith

  488. only

  489. receives.

  490. Works earn,

  491. but faith

  492. only

  493. receives.

  494. You can

  495. have one

  496. or you

  497. can have

  498. the other.

  499. You cannot

  500. have them

  501. both.

  502. faith.

  503. In fact,

  504. we also

  505. sang that

  506. earlier this

  507. morning.

  508. Back on

  509. page six.

  510. I will

  511. boast

  512. ever only

  513. in the

  514. Lord my

  515. God,

  516. for I

  517. know

  518. his glory

  519. is my

  520. good.

  521. Those are

  522. the words

  523. of faith,

  524. not the

  525. words

  526. of works.

  527. Paul goes

  528. on to

  529. explain this

  530. for us

  531. even more

  532. in verse

  533. 28.

  534. He says,

  535. For we

  536. hold that

  537. one is

  538. justified

  539. by faith

  540. apart from

  541. works of

  542. the law.

  543. If you've

  544. been with

  545. us,

  546. you remember

  547. the concept

  548. of justification

  549. has two

  550. parts to

  551. it.

  552. There's one

  553. part where

  554. justification

  555. is the

  556. theological

  557. term that

  558. means God

  559. makes it

  560. just as if

  561. we never

  562. sinned.

  563. He removes

  564. the record

  565. of our

  566. guilt.

  567. It also

  568. has another

  569. side to

  570. it.

  571. Justification

  572. doesn't only

  573. make it

  574. just as if

  575. we'd never

  576. sinned.

  577. Justification

  578. also means

  579. that God

  580. gives us

  581. Jesus'

  582. righteousness.

  583. It's not

  584. just that he

  585. removes the

  586. bad things

  587. that we've

  588. done.

  589. He gives

  590. us Jesus'

  591. record of

  592. the good

  593. things.

  594. One is

  595. justified.

  596. In other

  597. words,

  598. one is in

  599. right standing,

  600. right relationship

  601. with God,

  602. not based on

  603. anything you

  604. have done,

  605. but on

  606. Christ and

  607. Christ alone.

  608. Justification

  609. restores our

  610. relationship with

  611. God, and

  612. out of that

  613. flows all our

  614. other relationships.

  615. Our relationship

  616. with others,

  617. our relationship

  618. with ourself,

  619. our relationship

  620. with God's

  621. word, God's

  622. world, excuse

  623. me.

  624. Verses 29

  625. through 30 go

  626. on to expand

  627. on that same

  628. basic point,

  629. and the basic

  630. point of verses

  631. 29 and 30

  632. is that grace

  633. operates the

  634. same for

  635. every person.

  636. Remember,

  637. Paul has this

  638. burden in

  639. chapters 1 and

  640. 2 to say,

  641. look, it's

  642. religious and

  643. non-religious

  644. people who

  645. deserve God's

  646. wrath.

  647. Here he's

  648. simply saying

  649. in these two

  650. verses, 29

  651. through 30,

  652. religious and

  653. non-religious

  654. people, Gentile

  655. and Jew,

  656. they all receive

  657. grace in the

  658. same way.

  659. it's not as

  660. if Jewish

  661. people are

  662. able to

  663. receive grace

  664. by keeping

  665. the law and

  666. that the

  667. Gentiles receive

  668. grace by not

  669. keeping the

  670. law.

  671. No, everyone

  672. needs God's

  673. grace, whether

  674. they're circumcised,

  675. that's the Jew,

  676. or uncircumcised,

  677. the Gentile.

  678. That's why he

  679. says in verse 30,

  680. God is one.

  681. He's saying you

  682. can't split God

  683. up and make him

  684. operate in different

  685. ways with different

  686. people.

  687. people.

  688. No, his

  689. grace is the

  690. need of every

  691. person.

  692. And so in

  693. those verses,

  694. he's simply

  695. expanding on what

  696. he's already

  697. said.

  698. He's shown us

  699. our need in

  700. chapters 1 and

  701. 2.

  702. He's told us the

  703. gospel in chapter

  704. 3.

  705. He's now saying,

  706. okay, here's the

  707. logical conclusion,

  708. no boasting.

  709. And no boasting

  710. because you're

  711. standing with God

  712. is based on

  713. grace, not

  714. works.

  715. And that

  716. standing with

  717. God based on

  718. grace, not

  719. works, is true

  720. or necessary

  721. for everyone.

  722. I don't mean

  723. that everyone's

  724. received God's

  725. grace.

  726. I mean that is

  727. the way in

  728. which everyone

  729. must.

  730. If a person

  731. is to be in

  732. right standing

  733. with God, it

  734. must be by

  735. grace, never

  736. by works.

  737. Now we've

  738. discussed one

  739. side.

  740. of boasting,

  741. of taking

  742. credit.

  743. I asked you

  744. earlier, hey, if

  745. you're wealthy

  746. or successful

  747. or healthy, who

  748. do you give

  749. credit to?

  750. And you might

  751. have thought in

  752. that moment, well,

  753. I don't need to

  754. worry about that

  755. because I'm not

  756. wealthy, I'm not

  757. successful, and I

  758. don't have health.

  759. So I guess this

  760. doesn't apply to me.

  761. I don't need to

  762. worry, right?

  763. Well, no, the

  764. temptation, no

  765. matter what our

  766. situation is, the

  767. temptation is still

  768. present to have a

  769. life based on

  770. works.

  771. One pastor points

  772. out the other

  773. side.

  774. He says the

  775. problem of

  776. boasting is not

  777. just when we

  778. take credit for

  779. the good things.

  780. The problem of

  781. boasting also

  782. happens when we're

  783. envious of what

  784. other people have

  785. but we don't.

  786. Now that seems

  787. counterintuitive,

  788. but what he's

  789. saying is this,

  790. if we're mad at

  791. God that others

  792. have more than

  793. we do, what

  794. we're saying in a

  795. sense is that the

  796. world should work

  797. based on works.

  798. Hey, I don't

  799. understand, I've

  800. worked longer and

  801. harder.

  802. Why did that

  803. person get it?

  804. Shows our hearts,

  805. right?

  806. Reveals us.

  807. We believe God

  808. should give us

  809. what we think

  810. we deserve.

  811. If we're jealous

  812. and angry,

  813. when we see God's

  814. blessing in other

  815. people's lives,

  816. blessings that we

  817. desperately want,

  818. right?

  819. Think of the

  820. prophet Jonah.

  821. He was mad that

  822. God had showed

  823. grace.

  824. We revealed our

  825. hearts.

  826. We've shown that

  827. we have abandoned

  828. faith for works.

  829. What I'm saying

  830. simply is this.

  831. sometimes God's

  832. grace to other

  833. people offends

  834. us.

  835. And when God's

  836. grace to other

  837. people offends

  838. us, it shows we

  839. do not have a

  840. life of faith.

  841. When we're filled

  842. with resentment,

  843. when other people

  844. get what we think

  845. we deserve,

  846. that's the

  847. language of

  848. someone who

  849. operates by

  850. works.

  851. Now remember,

  852. I've been

  853. telling you as

  854. we've gone

  855. through the

  856. book of

  857. Romans that

  858. what Paul

  859. teaches,

  860. Jesus taught

  861. first.

  862. You may be

  863. familiar with

  864. the parable in

  865. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  866. 20 of the

  867. workers in the

  868. vineyard.

  869. They're hired to

  870. work in a

  871. vineyard, but

  872. some, here's the

  873. catch, are hired

  874. to work for part

  875. of the day.

  876. Some are hired to

  877. work for the

  878. whole day.

  879. So they line up

  880. at the end.

  881. The people who've

  882. only worked a

  883. little bit get

  884. paid first.

  885. So they receive

  886. their pay.

  887. The people who've

  888. worked all day

  889. look and they see

  890. what those people

  891. are getting paid

  892. and they say,

  893. wow, you know,

  894. if someone who

  895. worked half a day

  896. gets $2, then

  897. obviously I'm

  898. going to get $4.

  899. They come to the

  900. end and everyone

  901. has been paid the

  902. same.

  903. The folks who

  904. worked longer

  905. complained that

  906. look, this is not

  907. fair.

  908. How dare you,

  909. referring to the

  910. master in this

  911. parable, but really

  912. to God, how dare

  913. you give us all

  914. the same when

  915. some of us have

  916. worked more than

  917. others?

  918. The master replies

  919. in this way,

  920. am I not allowed

  921. to do what I

  922. choose with what

  923. belongs to me?

  924. Or do you

  925. begrudge

  926. my generosity?

  927. So the last

  928. will be first

  929. and the first

  930. last.

  931. Do we

  932. understand

  933. God's grace

  934. enough

  935. to be okay

  936. with that?

  937. Or do we

  938. think that what

  939. we've done in

  940. this life

  941. has earned

  942. something from

  943. God or

  944. proved something

  945. to him?

  946. If we

  947. believe that,

  948. we are still

  949. in the grip

  950. of boasting.

  951. What becomes

  952. of our boasting?

  953. It is

  954. excluded.

  955. all of this

  956. talk about

  957. different amounts

  958. of work

  959. receiving the

  960. same pay,

  961. though,

  962. raises a fair

  963. question, a

  964. complication.

  965. It's what Paul

  966. gets to at the

  967. end.

  968. If we are

  969. operating not on

  970. the principle of

  971. works, but on

  972. the principle of

  973. faith, does

  974. that not mean

  975. that it does

  976. not matter

  977. what I do?

  978. If everyone

  979. is getting paid

  980. the same at

  981. the end of

  982. the day,

  983. man, that's

  984. good to know.

  985. I guess I'll

  986. sit on my

  987. hands a little

  988. bit.

  989. I guess I'll

  990. do what I

  991. want when I

  992. want.

  993. I guess I'll

  994. take not one

  995. water break,

  996. but ten

  997. water breaks.

  998. I'll disappear

  999. to the bathroom

  1000. every hour.

  1001. If that's the

  1002. principle, I'll

  1003. take advantage

  1004. of it.

  1005. If we all get

  1006. the same wages,

  1007. then who

  1008. cares?

  1009. That's what

  1010. Paul is

  1011. addressing here

  1012. in verse 31.

  1013. Do we then

  1014. overthrow the

  1015. law by this

  1016. faith?

  1017. In other

  1018. words, if

  1019. we're not

  1020. based on

  1021. works, why

  1022. work?

  1023. Why obey

  1024. God?

  1025. It sounds

  1026. like we

  1027. don't need

  1028. to worry

  1029. about that.

  1030. And Paul

  1031. says, by

  1032. no means.

  1033. Absolutely

  1034. not.

  1035. And he

  1036. doesn't just

  1037. say absolutely

  1038. not.

  1039. He tells

  1040. us why.

  1041. On the

  1042. contrary, we

  1043. uphold the

  1044. law.

  1045. And Paul

  1046. is getting

  1047. at this

  1048. principle he

  1049. explains in

  1050. other parts of

  1051. scripture, which

  1052. is this, true

  1053. faith overflows

  1054. into obedience.

  1055. True faith

  1056. overflows into

  1057. obedience.

  1058. In fact, it

  1059. actually empowers

  1060. and allows the

  1061. only kind of

  1062. obedience that's

  1063. acceptable to

  1064. God.

  1065. If you

  1066. obey outside

  1067. of faith,

  1068. what trap

  1069. do you fall

  1070. into?

  1071. You fall

  1072. into the

  1073. trap of

  1074. boasting.

  1075. The only

  1076. way to

  1077. truly and

  1078. fully obey

  1079. God is to

  1080. obey out

  1081. of his

  1082. grace.

  1083. And so in

  1084. his letter to

  1085. the church

  1086. planter Titus,

  1087. Paul says

  1088. this,

  1089. the grace

  1090. of God

  1091. has appeared

  1092. bringing

  1093. salvation for

  1094. all people,

  1095. training us

  1096. to renounce

  1097. ungodliness

  1098. and worldly

  1099. passions,

  1100. and to live

  1101. self-controlled,

  1102. upright, and

  1103. godly lives

  1104. in the present

  1105. age.

  1106. Note what

  1107. Paul doesn't

  1108. say.

  1109. He doesn't

  1110. say self-control

  1111. and discipline

  1112. and following

  1113. the right

  1114. regimen

  1115. will teach

  1116. us to

  1117. renounce

  1118. ungodliness

  1119. and worldly

  1120. passions.

  1121. No, he

  1122. says the

  1123. grace of

  1124. God

  1125. training us

  1126. to renounce

  1127. ungodliness

  1128. and worldly

  1129. passion.

  1130. It is

  1131. God's grace

  1132. that allows

  1133. and enables

  1134. his people

  1135. to truly

  1136. obey.

  1137. True

  1138. faith

  1139. overflows

  1140. into

  1141. obedience.

  1142. And so

  1143. no,

  1144. believers do

  1145. obey.

  1146. They do

  1147. follow after

  1148. God and

  1149. his commands.

  1150. They do

  1151. it for a

  1152. different reason

  1153. and from a

  1154. different source.

  1155. Obedience,

  1156. not trying to

  1157. earn salvation,

  1158. that's the

  1159. obedience that

  1160. leads to

  1161. boasting.

  1162. That's the

  1163. obedience that

  1164. leads us to

  1165. believe we

  1166. have something

  1167. that God

  1168. owes us.

  1169. No,

  1170. obedience as

  1171. a fruit of

  1172. salvation,

  1173. something that

  1174. comes out of

  1175. God and his

  1176. work for us.

  1177. That is what

  1178. true obedience

  1179. is.

  1180. In fact,

  1181. that's the

  1182. only way

  1183. you can

  1184. truly obey

  1185. because any

  1186. other way

  1187. is an

  1188. attempt to

  1189. manipulate

  1190. God.

  1191. What is

  1192. boasting

  1193. except the

  1194. principle that

  1195. I can

  1196. somehow get

  1197. God to

  1198. owe me?

  1199. True obedience

  1200. comes out of

  1201. love for God,

  1202. gratitude for

  1203. what he has

  1204. done for

  1205. us.

  1206. what is

  1207. it that

  1208. God has

  1209. done for

  1210. us?

  1211. It's his

  1212. grace in

  1213. Jesus Christ.

  1214. It's that

  1215. justification

  1216. that Paul has

  1217. spoken about.

  1218. It is that

  1219. reconciliation

  1220. with God in

  1221. our relationship

  1222. to him.

  1223. It's peace

  1224. with God

  1225. because of

  1226. the work of

  1227. Jesus Christ.

  1228. That he's

  1229. done two

  1230. things for

  1231. us.

  1232. He's taken

  1233. the punishment

  1234. that we

  1235. deserve in

  1236. his death

  1237. on the

  1238. cross.

  1239. But not

  1240. just that,

  1241. he's also

  1242. given us

  1243. his obedience,

  1244. his correct

  1245. and right

  1246. and perfect

  1247. record.

  1248. That is the

  1249. grace that

  1250. leads us

  1251. to obedience.

  1252. That is what

  1253. takes us away

  1254. from boasting

  1255. and takes us

  1256. to praise.

  1257. Christ.

  1258. Christian,

  1259. who do you

  1260. give credit

  1261. to for

  1262. your life?

  1263. Who do you

  1264. thank for

  1265. your success?

  1266. Who deserves

  1267. all praise

  1268. and glory

  1269. for your

  1270. salvation?

  1271. salvation?

  1272. Verse 27

  1273. asks it

  1274. this way,

  1275. then what

  1276. becomes

  1277. of our

  1278. boasting?

  1279. The answer

  1280. is this.

  1281. What becomes

  1282. of our

  1283. boasting

  1284. is,

  1285. to God

  1286. be the

  1287. glory,

  1288. great things

  1289. he has

  1290. done,

  1291. so loved

  1292. you the

  1293. world

  1294. that he

  1295. gave us

  1296. his son.

  1297. Let's

  1298. pray.

  1299. God,

  1300. we

  1301. do

  1302. praise

  1303. you

  1304. and

  1305. thank

  1306. you

  1307. that

  1308. we

  1309. don't

  1310. live

  1311. on the

  1312. tightrope

  1313. of our

  1314. own

  1315. performance.

  1316. We don't

  1317. worry about

  1318. whether we've

  1319. done enough.

  1320. We don't

  1321. need to

  1322. worry about

  1323. what you've

  1324. given to

  1325. other people.

  1326. We know

  1327. that you

  1328. are a good

  1329. and gracious

  1330. father,

  1331. that you

  1332. operate on

  1333. a principle

  1334. not of

  1335. works,

  1336. but of

  1337. grace.

  1338. We ask

  1339. that you

  1340. would remind

  1341. us of that

  1342. this morning.

  1343. You drive

  1344. it deep

  1345. into our

  1346. hearts,

  1347. that it

  1348. would lead

  1349. us to

  1350. praise and

  1351. follow you.

  1352. We ask

  1353. these things

  1354. in Jesus'

  1355. name.

  1356. Amen.
