  1. Hey, church. Good morning. It's 1028, but I decided to go ahead and get this started, and I'll wait until 1030 before we actually get things rolling.

  2. I was thinking about, man, all the things with COVID and what got us onto live streaming in the first place years and years ago.

  3. So if you had been at our church in 2018 or 2019 and there was a snow day or a cold day, we just wouldn't have a sermon, and we didn't do any live streaming.

  4. And then COVID came along, and we had to learn so many things so quickly.

  5. And now we have the equipment, we have the setup, and I think at least once a year, we are here in my living room.

  6. And so I was just reflecting on all those things this morning and how many years it's been since COVID and the world of live streaming.

  7. And, you know, there was a time when we didn't have a live stream for our church.

  8. We didn't have a live stream camera.

  9. You know, if you missed the worship service, you just have to, the sermon audio recording was all there was.

  10. So it's just funny to think about everything that's changed in the world the last five or six years or so.

  11. And what I've learned, too, I remember back in COVID, just the learning curve of trying to figure out how to use the cameras and how to use Facebook Live and all those things.

  12. And now it's just something we do and we have to.

  13. So, okay, we're right at 1030.

  14. So I'm going to go ahead and officially get us started.

  15. As you join on, I would ask that if you're willing to make a comment and just where you are watching from, you can greet one another.

  16. That does a couple of things for us.

  17. First of all, it helps us understand who's actually with us.

  18. It gives us a sense of being together, even as we are actually separated physically.

  19. And it also helps me not feel quite so crazy.

  20. So I'm not just here looking into a camera.

  21. Even now I can see folks commenting.

  22. So that's helpful for me, if for no one else.

  23. We were supposed to have a congregational meeting today after church.

  24. Obviously, we're not going to do that.

  25. So that will be moved to next Sunday, January the 26th.

  26. I also do want to give you guys a reminder that my sabbatical is coming up very soon.

  27. February the 2nd will be my last Sunday with you all.

  28. So I have two more Sundays.

  29. After this morning, I have one more sermon.

  30. This coming week, I'll be traveling for our regional church meetings three times a year.

  31. The churches in Wyoming and Montana and Colorado get together.

  32. So I'll be in Summit County for some of the week and up in the Denver area for part of it.

  33. So Andy Perch will preach next Sunday.

  34. Then I'll preach on the 2nd.

  35. Then I'll be out.

  36. I also want to remind you that starting February 9th,

  37. Jonathan Clark is going to do a four-week series on evangelism that I'm really excited about.

  38. And I hope you all are as well.

  39. I think those are our announcements.

  40. We've been in a very short series in the Book of Psalms.

  41. The last couple weeks, the Book of Psalms is the songbook for God's people in the Old Testament.

  42. It is the prayer book, the hymn book, the guide for worshiping God.

  43. It's quoted all throughout the New Testament.

  44. There's sort of a competition between the Book of Psalms and the Book of Isaiah

  45. as to which is quoted more in the New Testament.

  46. Depends on who you ask and how you add up the numbers.

  47. This week, we're going to be in Psalm 46.

  48. And for the sake of time, I'm actually going to hone in on verses 1 through 7.

  49. And we're going to leave off verses 8 through 11,

  50. just because this is such a rich passage with so much going on.

  51. And Psalm 46 really asks one question.

  52. What do we do when life falls apart?

  53. What do we do when life falls apart?

  54. It's with that I invite you to turn with me now.

  55. You can turn on your phone or in your Bible or in your computer,

  56. wherever you get access to the scriptures.

  57. Wherever you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  58. He tells us that it is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  59. and sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  60. And so that's why we read now from Psalm 46.

  61. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

  62. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way,

  63. though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.

  64. Though its waters roar and foam,

  65. though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

  66. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

  67. the holy habitation of the Most High.

  68. God is in the midst of her.

  69. She shall not be moved.

  70. God will help her when morning dawns.

  71. The nations rage.

  72. The kingdoms totter.

  73. He utters his voice.

  74. The earth melts.

  75. The Lord of hosts is with us.

  76. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

  77. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  78. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you for your word.

  79. We thank you for the gift of technology that allows us to connect,

  80. even as we're at a distance.

  81. And we ask that you'd help us.

  82. You'd help us to focus for a few minutes this morning on your word,

  83. that we would worship you,

  84. that we would see you clearly,

  85. and that you would remove the many distractions that come with this sort of technology.

  86. Instead, you'd help us.

  87. You'd help us to see you in your word.

  88. And we ask these things in Jesus' name.

  89. Amen.

  90. One of my very best friends in the whole world

  91. grew up in Asheville, North Carolina,

  92. which is in western North Carolina.

  93. And he had a very hard childhood with a lot of significant trauma.

  94. And so home was not always a safe place for him.

  95. But if you're familiar with western North Carolina,

  96. you know that that's the mountains of North Carolina.

  97. And while home was not safe, the mountains were.

  98. He looked to the mountains as a place of comfort and solace and safety.

  99. He eventually became an outdoorsman.

  100. He worked in the outdoors industry for a while and I think directly connected to those experiences.

  101. And you probably already know where I'm going with this.

  102. In September of last year, Hurricane Helene came in.

  103. And what did it do?

  104. It wiped out western North Carolina.

  105. Destroyed that part of the state with floods.

  106. And the mountains themselves were covered in water.

  107. Of course, not up to their topstrap, but they're flooded.

  108. Inaccessible.

  109. And so we find here, verse 2.

  110. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way,

  111. though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.

  112. And to be honest with you,

  113. I've always thought of that verse in Psalm 46

  114. as sort of being this exaggeration, this hyperbole.

  115. You know, of course, the mountains will never fall into the sea.

  116. It's just using this image to help us understand,

  117. well, the worst thing that you can imagine happening,

  118. which of course won't happen,

  119. God is stronger still.

  120. I'm going to have to eat my words on that

  121. because what is Hurricane Helene but water from the sea

  122. in a hurricane that comes in and floods the mountains?

  123. So my image, my idea, my thoughts about Psalm 46 have changed

  124. because of that, because of my conversations with my friend.

  125. The point is this.

  126. Sometimes the most stable things in the world

  127. are shaken, are removed, are destroyed.

  128. Sometimes the most stable things in the world

  129. are shaken and removed and destroyed.

  130. And if you've lived long enough,

  131. you have probably experienced that,

  132. something that you thought was the bedrock

  133. of your life disappeared.

  134. Maybe your spouse told you

  135. that he or she wanted out of the marriage.

  136. Maybe the stock market crashed

  137. and along with it disappeared your wealth.

  138. And with your wealth, your chance of retiring.

  139. We could think of another natural disaster,

  140. the wildfires that are going on in Los Angeles.

  141. There was an article in the Wall Street Journal

  142. that came out recently and the title was this.

  143. Their wealth is in their homes.

  144. Their homes are now ash.

  145. And it featured folks who are in their 60s and their 70s

  146. in their home.

  147. Their house was a large portion

  148. of their retirement plan, of their wealth.

  149. In addition to that, before the fires,

  150. insurance companies had stopped supporting,

  151. had dropped, I think State Farm especially,

  152. their coverage for wildfires.

  153. And so you have people who are in this double bind.

  154. On the one hand, they've lost their insurance.

  155. Then the fire comes in and takes out their wealth.

  156. Maybe the stable thing for you is your job that you lost.

  157. Maybe it's that your mind and your body

  158. slowly start to fail and betray you.

  159. This psalm reminds us that we can't leave this life unscathed.

  160. And so it's about this.

  161. It's about the question that I mentioned to you earlier.

  162. What do we do when life falls apart?

  163. What do we do when the earth gives way?

  164. Well, it tells us in that very same verse, verse 2,

  165. we will not fear.

  166. Now notice what it doesn't say.

  167. It doesn't say we won't grieve.

  168. It doesn't say we won't be sad.

  169. It says we will not fear.

  170. Why?

  171. Well, look one verse earlier, verse 1.

  172. God is our refuge and strength,

  173. a very present help in trouble.

  174. The psalm goes on immediately,

  175. verses 4 through 7,

  176. to give us a picture of what that means.

  177. There's this contrast.

  178. So you're going to want to look at your Bible now with me.

  179. We're going to be moving around quickly on different verses.

  180. There's this contrast between what happens in verses 1 through 3,

  181. and then what we see in verses 4 through 7.

  182. So in verses 2 and 3,

  183. we have these threatening waters that destroy.

  184. That's what's happening in the world.

  185. Verse 4,

  186. we have a river that brings life.

  187. There is a river whose streams may clad the city of God.

  188. Verses 2 and 3,

  189. what do we see?

  190. The mountains are moved into the heart of the sea.

  191. Okay, so the mountains,

  192. the stable things in life,

  193. they can be destroyed.

  194. They can be upset.

  195. Verse 5,

  196. talking about God's city,

  197. Jerusalem,

  198. God is in the midst of her same word,

  199. she shall not be moved.

  200. So I want you to see the contrast.

  201. Waters that destroy,

  202. waters that give life.

  203. Things that are stable,

  204. seemingly,

  205. but can be moved,

  206. God's city cannot be moved.

  207. Then we're told,

  208. verses 4 and 5,

  209. this is the habitation of God.

  210. This is where he dwells.

  211. He's in the midst of her.

  212. God's presence is there.

  213. Verse 5,

  214. we're told that God is going to help.

  215. God will help her when morning dawns.

  216. And then verses 5 through 6,

  217. God is actually more powerful

  218. than all these other forces.

  219. Verse 6,

  220. the nations rage,

  221. the kingdoms totter,

  222. he utters his voice,

  223. the earth melts.

  224. Whatever power there is in this world,

  225. God is more powerful.

  226. Whatever power there is in this world,

  227. God is more powerful.

  228. The world,

  229. the things that we see

  230. as most reliable

  231. and most stable,

  232. may collapse.

  233. And at some point,

  234. they will.

  235. God's city

  236. will not.

  237. Things that are most stable

  238. in this world,

  239. seemingly,

  240. can,

  241. and it sometimes will,

  242. collapse.

  243. God's people

  244. will not.

  245. The world

  246. may be falling apart.

  247. God's church

  248. stands firm.

  249. The waters are roaring

  250. and chaotic

  251. out there.

  252. The waters are nurturing

  253. and safe

  254. and life-giving

  255. in here.

  256. So I want you to see

  257. there's this kind of

  258. black and white distinction.

  259. There's

  260. this contrast

  261. that's being drawn.

  262. Here's the world,

  263. unstable,

  264. unsteady,

  265. always full of risk,

  266. volatile.

  267. Here's God's city,

  268. here's his church,

  269. unshakable.

  270. Why don't we fear?

  271. Because there's a place

  272. where the waters are calm.

  273. Why don't we fear?

  274. Because Jerusalem,

  275. verse 5,

  276. shall not

  277. be moved.

  278. Now you might be thinking,

  279. man,

  280. that sounds like a real

  281. pie-in-the-sky

  282. sort of hope.

  283. How does that help me now?

  284. How does that help

  285. people in Los Angeles

  286. whose houses have been

  287. destroyed?

  288. What does it mean

  289. on Monday

  290. or Tuesday

  291. that God is my refuge

  292. and strength,

  293. that he's a very present help?

  294. Well,

  295. to get at that,

  296. we have to remember

  297. that when we look

  298. at the Old Testament

  299. and we see references

  300. to Zion or Jerusalem,

  301. a place where God dwells,

  302. the center,

  303. the capital of his people,

  304. we now think of where

  305. God's people are now,

  306. which is not in Jerusalem,

  307. but is in the church.

  308. God is here

  309. in the midst

  310. of his people,

  311. his church,

  312. he's very present,

  313. and he's very present

  314. in a variety of ways,

  315. a variety of practical ways.

  316. Remember that God's church

  317. is where he's given us

  318. to each other,

  319. and so God gives

  320. his people

  321. to his people.

  322. One of the ways

  323. that God is

  324. very present with you

  325. is the other people

  326. who worship with you

  327. at Cheyenne Mountain

  328. Presbyterian Church.

  329. That is a piece,

  330. a part

  331. of God's presence.

  332. God does not merely

  333. call us as sons

  334. and daughters,

  335. but when he does,

  336. what does that mean?

  337. We also have brothers

  338. and sisters.

  339. And I think

  340. when we've been

  341. in the church

  342. for a long time,

  343. it's easy to forget

  344. how isolated

  345. the world out there is.

  346. how hard it is

  347. to make real,

  348. true,

  349. deep friendships

  350. outside of the community

  351. that God's given us.

  352. I'm not saying

  353. it's impossible,

  354. but in our current age

  355. in 2025,

  356. an age of isolation

  357. and individualism,

  358. it is hard.

  359. It is uphill.

  360. If you're in the church,

  361. God is present with you.

  362. If we were here together,

  363. I'd say the people

  364. next to you.

  365. We're not next to each other,

  366. but you know what I mean.

  367. God's also very present

  368. to us in his word.

  369. He's given us his word

  370. to guide us

  371. and to instruct us.

  372. We could even say

  373. that this psalm,

  374. Psalm 46,

  375. is one of the ways

  376. that God is very present

  377. with us in trouble.

  378. God's given us strength

  379. in the sense that

  380. he's given us this psalm.

  381. So it's not just

  382. that he's a refuge,

  383. right?

  384. Verse 1,

  385. he's also our strength.

  386. And he's our strength

  387. in a variety of ways.

  388. One of the ways

  389. is he reminds us

  390. of what's true.

  391. We're told in this psalm

  392. we don't fear.

  393. Well, what is fear

  394. but a belief

  395. about the future?

  396. And what does God

  397. tell us in his word?

  398. He tells us

  399. what the future looks like.

  400. He tells us

  401. what we need to know

  402. to not fear.

  403. We could also say

  404. that God

  405. is a very present help

  406. in trouble

  407. because he is

  408. immediately accessible

  409. to us in prayer.

  410. I told you

  411. a few weeks ago

  412. that you

  413. are in fact

  414. more powerful

  415. than Elon Musk.

  416. And you're more powerful

  417. than him

  418. in this particular sense

  419. that you

  420. have access

  421. to the living God.

  422. You can pray to him

  423. whenever you want.

  424. And God himself

  425. is more powerful

  426. than Elon Musk.

  427. Verse 5,

  428. verse 6,

  429. the nations rage,

  430. the kingdoms totter.

  431. He utters his voice,

  432. the earth

  433. holds.

  434. James chapter 1,

    James 1:5

  435. verse 5,

  436. tells us

  437. God gives wisdom

  438. wisdom

  439. to those who ask

  440. for it.

  441. That's a promise.

  442. He's saying,

  443. look,

  444. if you believe

  445. and you pray to God

  446. and you say,

  447. I need wisdom,

  448. this is a promise.

  449. There's no qualifications.

  450. It says God

  451. will give you wisdom.

  452. He gives wisdom

  453. to those who ask.

  454. Actually,

  455. I think there is

  456. a qualification

  457. that we ask in faith,

  458. right?

  459. James chapter 5,

    James 5:17

  460. verse 17,

  461. tells us

  462. God really does

  463. answer prayer,

  464. right?

  465. Elijah prayed

  466. and God answered.

  467. Do we believe that?

  468. Do we believe

  469. God's promises

  470. about the power

  471. of prayer?

  472. Do we believe

  473. that he is

  474. more powerful

  475. than the other forces

  476. in this world?

  477. Do we believe

  478. that he answers,

  479. that he hears

  480. when we cry out?

  481. Do we believe

  482. that he's our refuge

  483. and strength,

  484. a very present help

  485. in trouble?

  486. God's also

  487. very present

  488. with us

  489. by his Holy Spirit.

  490. Jesus makes promises

  491. in both John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  492. and John chapter 16

    John 16 chapter mention

  493. that he's going to

  494. send the Spirit

  495. to his people.

  496. In John 14,

  497. he refers to the Spirit

  498. as a helper,

  499. the one who's going

  500. to be with us.

  501. John 16,

  502. Jesus says,

  503. hey,

  504. the Spirit's actually

  505. so powerful

  506. that it's better

  507. that I leave you

  508. because then I can

  509. send the Spirit.

  510. And that's mind-blowing.

  511. I've talked about that

  512. a number of times

  513. in sermons

  514. that Jesus would say,

  515. actually,

  516. it's better that I go

  517. because the Holy Spirit

  518. is so valuable.

  519. You know,

  520. our instinct is to think,

  521. man,

  522. if Jesus were just here,

  523. and Jesus says,

  524. no,

  525. actually,

  526. there's something

  527. better than me.

  528. There is my Spirit.

  529. Verse 2,

  530. again,

  531. tells us,

  532. sorry,

  533. verse 1 tells us

  534. that he's our strength.

  535. It's our strength

  536. in a variety of ways.

  537. The Spirit is one of them.

  538. The Spirit gives us

  539. what we need

  540. to obey God.

  541. It's also a strength

  542. in that he gives us

  543. truths that we need.

  544. Truths that anchor us,

  545. allow us to move forward.

  546. God's our strength

  547. and our refuge

  548. because he's promised us

  549. things that we can't lose.

  550. Every once in a while,

  551. I try to remind you all

  552. of 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:3

  553. verse 3,

  554. verse 4,

  555. excuse me,

  556. which tells us

  557. that because of the resurrection,

  558. we have an inheritance

  559. in heaven.

  560. And that inheritance

  561. is described

  562. with three words.

  563. It is imperishable,

  564. undefiled,

  565. and unfading.

  566. Which is another way

  567. of saying,

  568. whatever happens

  569. out there,

  570. it can't touch,

  571. it can't damage

  572. what's in here.

  573. It cannot damage

  574. what God has prepared

  575. for his people.

  576. There are some things

  577. in life

  578. that will not fall

  579. into the sea.

  580. There are some things

  581. in life

  582. that cannot be shaken.

  583. Those are the things

  584. and only the things

  585. that God gives

  586. to us.

  587. I said this already,

  588. fear

  589. is based on

  590. what we believe

  591. about what is going

  592. to happen in the future.

  593. God's saying,

  594. don't fear.

  595. I've already told you

  596. the future.

  597. It's secure.

  598. It's secure

  599. and cannot be lost.

  600. We're not looking

  601. at verses 8-11

  602. this morning,

  603. but verses 8-11

  604. give us another glimpse

  605. of the future.

  606. And they're saying,

  607. look,

  608. God wins.

  609. God wins

  610. and he is going

  611. to fully

  612. and finally

  613. be seen

  614. for who he is.

  615. He's going to bring

  616. full and final justice

  617. to this earth.

  618. Hebrews chapter 13

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  619. gives us

  620. a reminder of this,

  621. speaking specifically

  622. about wealth.

  623. It says,

  624. keep your life free

  625. from the love of money

  626. and be content

  627. with what you have.

  628. For he has said,

  629. I will never leave you

  630. nor forsake you.

  631. So we can confidently

  632. say,

  633. the Lord is my helper.

  634. I will not fear.

  635. What can man do

  636. to me?

  637. Why is it

  638. that we don't fear

  639. when the earth

  640. gives way

  641. and the mountains

  642. fall into the heart

  643. of the sea?

  644. We don't fear

  645. because God has told us

  646. I will never leave you

  647. nor forsake you.

  648. We don't fear

  649. because we can confidently

  650. say,

  651. the Lord is my helper.

  652. What can man

  653. do to me?

  654. Remember,

  655. Jesus says,

  656. don't fear

  657. those who can

  658. kill the body.

  659. Fear God,

  660. the one

  661. who has power

  662. over the soul.

  663. You will lose

  664. things

  665. of great value

  666. in this life.

  667. there's no way

  668. around that.

  669. There's no amount

  670. of money

  671. you can pile up

  672. to keep you safe.

  673. There's no friend

  674. with enough influence

  675. to keep you

  676. from harm.

  677. You will lose

  678. things of great value.

  679. There is something,

  680. though,

  681. of ultimate value

  682. that we cannot

  683. lose.

  684. There are things

  685. of ultimate value

  686. that will not

  687. be lost.

  688. Those are the things

  689. that God gives to us.

  690. And they cannot

  691. be lost

  692. because of

  693. Jesus' resurrection.

  694. Peter tells us,

  695. 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:4

  696. verse 4,

  697. I already quoted it to you.

  698. There's an inheritance.

  699. It's imperishable,

  700. unfading,

  701. undefiled.

  702. The verse before that,

  703. verse 3,

  704. tells us why we have

  705. this inheritance.

  706. We have this inheritance

  707. because of the resurrection.

  708. That it's Jesus' death

  709. and his resurrection

  710. that makes those things

  711. unlosable

  712. and unshakable.

  713. Because he's promised

  714. them to us.

  715. He's given them to us,

  716. those who believe

  717. in Christ

  718. and follow him

  719. by faith.

  720. And he's able

  721. to do that

  722. because of Jesus'

  723. life and death

  724. and resurrection.

  725. Because just Jesus died

  726. and took the punishment

  727. that we deserve.

  728. and he lived

  729. and lived the life

  730. that we should have lived

  731. so that we can have life

  732. with him.

  733. So there's many things

  734. that can happen to you

  735. in this life

  736. that are terrible

  737. and tragic.

  738. None of them

  739. can take that away.

  740. I've told you before,

  741. you may end up

  742. in prison, right,

  743. for the rest of your life.

  744. You may end up

  745. because of something

  746. you actually did

  747. or something you're

  748. falsely accused of.

  749. and in a sense

  750. that might feel

  751. like the end

  752. of your existence

  753. in this world.

  754. But it can't touch

  755. your future.

  756. Can't touch the future

  757. promise to those

  758. who are in Christ.

  759. My friend,

  760. who I mentioned

  761. at the beginning,

  762. told me this.

  763. He said,

  764. I've always looked

  765. to the mountains

  766. as a stable thing,

  767. found comfort

  768. and solace

  769. in the mountains.

  770. But the flood,

  771. that is the floods

  772. of Western North Carolina,

  773. showed me

  774. even the mountains

  775. are not unshakable.

  776. The mountains

  777. aren't my refuge.

  778. Ultimately,

  779. the Lord

  780. is my refuge.

  781. That's one of the ways,

  782. by the way,

  783. that God uses

  784. tragedies like that.

  785. He uses them

  786. to shake us up

  787. and remind us

  788. of what is secure

  789. and what isn't secure.

  790. That's why we see

  791. after tragedy,

  792. often there's sort of

  793. this mini revival.

  794. Some of you will remember

  795. after 9-11,

  796. there was this

  797. mass return to church.

  798. Because people

  799. were shaken up,

  800. they realized,

  801. hey, the things

  802. that I place security in,

  803. those things are not

  804. as steady

  805. or as stable

  806. as I thought.

  807. Catastrophes clarify

  808. how stable

  809. the world is.

  810. They remind us

  811. that it isn't.

  812. And there is,

  813. though,

  814. that one thing

  815. that is stable.

  816. What's stable

  817. is the things

  818. that we have

  819. in God,

  820. with God,

  821. because of Jesus'

  822. resurrection.

  823. Jesus himself

  824. makes us a promise

  825. about that stable future.

  826. We'll end with this,

  827. Jesus' words

  828. in John 14.

  829. Let not your hearts

  830. be troubled.

  831. Man,

  832. that sounds a lot

  833. like Psalm 46.

  834. Let not your hearts

  835. be troubled.

  836. Believe in God,

  837. believe also in me.

  838. In my Father's house

  839. are many rooms.

  840. If it were not so,

  841. would I have told you

  842. that I go to prepare

  843. a place for you?

  844. And if I go

  845. and prepare a place

  846. for you,

  847. I will come again

  848. and will take you

  849. to myself,

  850. that where I am,

  851. you may be also.

  852. Let's pray.

  853. Our Father in Heaven,

  854. we do thank you

  855. and praise you

  856. for your word.

  857. We thank you

  858. for this psalm,

  859. Psalm 46.

  860. We ask that you

  861. would use it

  862. as one of your tools

  863. to be very present

  864. with us

  865. in our troubles.

  866. That while we may grieve

  867. and we may be sad,

  868. we would not fear

  869. because we know

  870. that what we have

  871. in you

  872. cannot be lost.

  873. And we ask these things

  874. in Jesus' name.

  875. Amen.

  876. Thanks, church.

  877. Look forward to seeing

  878. you all again

  879. very soon.
