  1. Well, good morning.

  2. Once again, my name is Wes.

  3. I was here last week.

  4. If you were here with us, it was great being with you.

  5. I'm excited to be back to bring God's word for us this morning.

  6. So if you want to open up in your Bibles

  7. or look in your bulletin at Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  8. we're going to be looking at verses 7 through 16 this week.

  9. And if you were here last week,

  10. you heard me kind of give the caution

  11. that as we come to this passage,

  12. we need to be reminded that

  13. as in many of Paul's letters,

  14. he spent a lot of time building out for us

  15. the core truths of the gospel,

  16. the grace of Jesus given to us

  17. before he gets to these gospel therefores.

  18. And so we're looking at a passage

  19. that has a lot of implications for how we should live,

  20. how we should interact with one another.

  21. But those how-tos are rooted

  22. in what Jesus alone has done for us in the gospel.

  23. What we are striving to do in our efforts to love one another,

  24. in our efforts to paint a picture to the world of the unity

  25. that Jesus has already created by his sacrifice,

  26. is not efforts to save ourselves.

  27. It's not efforts to earn our salvation.

  28. If you're here this morning,

  29. and you're not sure where you stand

  30. in relation to this Christianity idea,

  31. you're here perhaps as a visitor, as a skeptic,

  32. we're so glad that you're here with us.

  33. We're honored.

  34. I'm honored that you would even listen to what I have to say.

  35. This is not a how-to-earn-God's-love message for us this morning.

  36. This is a how-do-we-respond-to-God's-love-for-us-in-Christ.

  37. And so I hope you're encouraged by that,

  38. and you're reminded of that as we go to this passage.

  39. I'm gonna read this for us as we begin Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  40. starting in verse 7.

  41. And then I would invite you to go to the throne of grace with me,

  42. that we would go together in prayer

  43. to ask God's blessing on our time together in his word.

  44. And so let me read this for us as we begin our time together

  45. in God's word this morning, starting in verse 7.

  46. But grace was given to each one of us

  47. according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  48. Therefore it says, when he ascended on high,

  49. he led a host of captives, and he gave gifts to men.

  50. In saying he ascended, what does it mean

  51. but that he also descended into the lower regions, the earth?

  52. He who descended is the one who also ascended far above all the heavens,

  53. that he might fill all things.

  54. And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,

  55. the shepherds and teachers to equip the saints

  56. for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.

  57. Until we all attain to the unity of the faith

  58. and of the knowledge of the Son of God,

  59. to mature manhood to the measure of the stature

  60. of the fullness of Christ.

  61. So that we may no longer be children tossed to and fro by the waves

  62. and carried about by every wind of doctrine,

  63. by human cunning, by craftiness and deceitful schemes.

  64. Rather, speaking the truth in love,

  65. we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head,

  66. into Christ, from whom the whole body,

  67. joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped,

  68. when each part is working properly,

  69. makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

  70. Let's pray together.

  71. Gracious Father, once again,

  72. we thank you for the chance to gather together in your name this morning,

  73. that you are a God who speaks,

  74. and in your speech and in your action,

  75. you have called a people to yourself,

  76. a people that was not a people,

  77. but by the blood of Jesus,

  78. you have claimed us as your own.

  79. You have cleansed us.

  80. You have redeemed us.

  81. You have given us a new name.

  82. You call us your children.

  83. And so as we gather together as your family this morning,

  84. Father, you know where each of us is coming from.

  85. You know the burdens we carry.

  86. You know the particular ways that we come to this passage this morning,

  87. wondering about the grace of Jesus,

  88. reaching for that grace,

  89. or perhaps afraid of what that grace might mean

  90. in terms of the change that it can bring into our lives.

  91. Father, would you draw us near to you by your spirit?

  92. Would you give us eyes to see and ears to hear?

  93. Would you help us see the sweet gifts of the risen and ascended Jesus

  94. given to your church this morning

  95. that we might pursue that unity that we saw last week,

  96. that we might pursue that love and service of one another

  97. because of your love and service to us?

  98. Father, we ask these things in Jesus' name.

  99. Amen.

  100. When I was in seminary,

  101. Kelly and I had a very unique housing situation.

  102. We had a parent of a teacher in high school

  103. that had a country house on the state line.

  104. I was going to seminary in Charlotte in North Carolina.

  105. My wife kind of got her dream job as an oncology nurse.

  106. Back in the town, we were from Spartanburg, South Carolina.

  107. So we were living in between these two cities

  108. and we were on this old farmhouse

  109. that was being rented to us at a very affordable rate.

  110. It was very kind of a Lord to provide that.

  111. And one of the things that came with this house was like,

  112. all right, we have all this land.

  113. What are we going to do?

  114. Well, there was this plot of land that was perfect for a garden.

  115. And so we had a garden

  116. and not only did we have this garden,

  117. but I had my Meemaw.

  118. And if you can't tell by that name,

  119. Meemaw was just like a walking farmer's atlas.

  120. She knew how to plant everything and when to plant it.

  121. And so my Uncle Greg and my Meemaw

  122. helped me actually have a successful garden,

  123. which was a sweet thing to have.

  124. And I kind of enjoyed that.

  125. It was a fun thing to have.

  126. It was fun to bring people tomatoes and things like that.

  127. But when we moved to Georgia,

  128. I was like, oh, so like I'm a gardener now.

  129. You know, like I can do this.

  130. So we get to our house

  131. and it's a pretty similar place

  132. in terms of like, you know, the weather and the soil.

  133. There's not that much different from where we lived.

  134. But it is a neighborhood.

  135. So I'm going to do the cool thing

  136. and do a raised bed garden.

  137. So I do everything kind of the same

  138. as I had done it before.

  139. Everything started to grow and it looked nice.

  140. But one thing was different

  141. about our first house in Georgia.

  142. And that was it had a lot of trees.

  143. It had a ton of trees.

  144. So many trees.

  145. Like when I think back on how many trees we had

  146. and now that we live in Colorado,

  147. I'm like, man, can a place have that many trees?

  148. And it did.

  149. It had that many trees.

  150. And so one thing our garden lacked

  151. was the one thing it had to have.

  152. It just did not have much sunlight, right?

  153. And in my wisdom, my expertise as a gardener,

  154. I failed to see that until after I had built

  155. the raised bed garden and put in the time and effort.

  156. And so even as things grew some,

  157. there was very little fruit that was yielded.

  158. And I just mentioned that story just to say,

  159. once again, it is essential that we have

  160. the light of Jesus shining on us.

  161. That without that light shining on us,

  162. there is no hope for fruitfulness.

  163. And yet part of what Paul is doing

  164. in the passage we're looking at

  165. is he's saying that the light of Jesus is shining on you.

  166. If you are in Christ and you have his spirit,

  167. that light is shining on you.

  168. And now we can begin to talk about

  169. some of the other things that go into growing

  170. and producing fruit in Christ.

  171. We can start to talk about some of the other gifts

  172. that King Jesus has given us

  173. in order to pursue each other and care for one another.

  174. And as we begin to move towards each other in Christ

  175. and serve each other,

  176. one of the things we have to recognize

  177. is that because Jesus is a generous king,

  178. a king who delights in giving his people good gifts

  179. because our father in heaven is a good father

  180. who delights in giving his people good gifts

  181. because he hasn't withheld the most precious gift from us.

  182. He's already laid down his son's life for us.

  183. How can he withhold any gift for us now in Christ?

  184. That this community is a gifted community.

  185. It's a community that Jesus longs to see

  186. pursue each other by the gifts that he's given,

  187. that a community seeking unity in Christ

  188. actually has a diversity of gifts from King Jesus

  189. to pursue that unity.

  190. And that's what we're gonna look at this morning.

  191. It's what I want us to be challenged by,

  192. but I want us to never lose sight

  193. of the light of Jesus that we need,

  194. that this is an overflow of the abundance

  195. of the grace of Jesus given to his people.

  196. And I want us to begin looking at verses seven to 10

  197. and to see this idea that the church of Jesus

  198. is a gifted church.

  199. Not it will be a gifted church,

  200. not maybe it could become a gifted church,

  201. but there is a diversity of gifts

  202. that Jesus has given his church.

  203. And when we begin to embrace that,

  204. I think it actually changes the way

  205. that we move towards each other.

  206. If you look at the passage with me in verse seven,

  207. there's a distinct shift, isn't there?

  208. Especially if you have a Bible open,

  209. you can kind of look back at the passage

  210. we were looking at last week.

  211. This comes out of that famous statement

  212. of the unity of the gospel,

  213. like the one Lord, the one faith, the one baptism,

  214. the God and Father of all,

  215. who is ruler over all and through all and in all.

  216. Up to this point that therefore,

  217. the walking worthy of the gospel

  218. and the push towards unity

  219. has been an invitation to see our oneness in Jesus.

  220. Notice that in verse seven,

  221. Paul now shifts to our individuality, doesn't he?

  222. There's a but each one of us.

  223. Despite this call to unity,

  224. it doesn't mean that now who we are

  225. as individuals doesn't matter.

  226. This is not a call to kind of abandon

  227. all of our gifts and personalities.

  228. Instead, Paul wants us to see

  229. that grace was given to each one of us

  230. according to the measure of Christ's gift.

  231. That part of the plan of King Jesus

  232. and calling a people to himself

  233. is that that people would have a diversity of gifts.

  234. And this is actually a really big idea in Paul's writing.

  235. In 1 Corinthians chapter 12,

    1 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  236. we can see in verses five and six

  237. that there's a variety of service,

  238. varieties of service, but the same Lord.

  239. There's a variety of activities,

  240. but it's the same God who empowers them all and everyone.

  241. In Romans 12, we can also go and see

  242. that the different measures of faith

  243. lead into a discussion of different functions

  244. of the members of the body.

  245. Later in this passage,

  246. he's gonna use this metaphor

  247. that speaks to the different purposes of the body.

  248. This is a huge idea

  249. in Paul's understanding of the body of Christ.

  250. To be a member of this body

  251. is to be a member of a body

  252. that has a variety of gifts.

  253. And where do those gifts come from?

  254. Paul says they come from the ascended Lord Jesus.

  255. And he gives us this image

  256. that comes from Psalm 68, right?

  257. You ascended on high,

  258. leading a host of captives in your train

  259. and receiving gifts among men,

  260. even among the rebellious,

  261. that the Lord God may dwell there.

  262. This image from the Psalms of a conquering king

  263. who having conquered,

  264. who having won victory,

  265. now has a host of captives

  266. and a host of gifts to give to his people.

  267. The idea that in Jesus,

  268. our principal enemies,

  269. sin and death itself have been conquered.

  270. And now Jesus has ascended on high

  271. and sits at his father's right hand.

  272. And from that place of power,

  273. Paul wants us to see

  274. that part of his purpose in ascending

  275. is so like an ascended king

  276. who sits on his throne

  277. and now has authority granted to him.

  278. He gives good gifts.

  279. He gives good gifts.

  280. And there's a variety of gifts

  281. that can come out of that.

  282. And yet one of the things I think we have to do

  283. is before we even get into some of the specific gifts

  284. that Paul mentions in this passage,

  285. we need to ask ourselves,

  286. do I believe this of the body of Christ?

  287. When I come to church,

  288. am I thinking,

  289. all right, here I go.

  290. I'm headed to the place

  291. where there's a bunch of gifts

  292. of the risen ascended Lord Jesus at work,

  293. ready to serve me and my family and my children,

  294. ready to serve me and my neighbors,

  295. an opportunity for me now

  296. to serve uniquely as a child of God, right?

  297. There's a diversity of gifts.

  298. There's a diversity of tools

  299. and it's actually a beautiful thing.

  300. A lot of people in Colorado love to bike.

  301. They love to ski.

  302. I will just raise my hand and confess,

  303. I too fall victim to those wonderful hobbies.

  304. And there's a joke among those hobbies

  305. and it's funny

  306. because both of them kind of have the same joke

  307. and that's that the right number of skis

  308. or the right number of bikes is N plus one

  309. or N is the number you currently have.

  310. Now that's not necessarily a good thing,

  311. but it does speak to this idea, right?

  312. That when we get into something

  313. and we love something and we enjoy it,

  314. as we're drawn into that,

  315. we often just wanna have more and more things to enjoy, right?

  316. And you think at first like,

  317. oh, if I just have a set of skis,

  318. I could ski down this mountain.

  319. You're like, no, no, no, no.

  320. What sort of conditions are we dealing with here?

  321. Are we looking at powder?

  322. Are we going back country, right?

  323. If we're riding a bike,

  324. are we riding a mountain bike to do road bike riding?

  325. Heaven forbid that would happen, right?

  326. There's a variety of tools.

  327. There's a variety of things we would use to do certain things.

  328. When we went to Japan on this mission trip,

  329. I thought we wanted like a Japanese knife.

  330. If you're a cook, if you like,

  331. you might know like Japan is one of the knife capitals,

  332. but honestly, I was overwhelmed

  333. with the types of knives and the shapes of knives.

  334. I was like, how can there be this many knives?

  335. And yet I'm someone who loves

  336. that there's that many skis and that many bikes.

  337. And so there's so many hobbies and things we can get into

  338. where we're like, man,

  339. if I could just have more of these things.

  340. And I think there's something beautiful about that, right?

  341. That as we get into a craft, as we get into a hobby,

  342. we see the different ways that things can be enjoyed.

  343. And one of the things that I hope you're encouraged by

  344. is that Jesus actually looks at the church and says,

  345. there is almost an unending number of gifts

  346. and people that I can use in my kingdom.

  347. You might be sitting here this morning

  348. and thinking about your personality and your giftings

  349. and thinking, well, I'm not that sort of person.

  350. You might have a vision of a very gregarious,

  351. outgoing person.

  352. And you might think that in order to serve the church,

  353. Jesus is really looking for this type of person,

  354. this sort of relational ninja.

  355. You might be thinking about someone sitting next to you

  356. that you're like, I could never know

  357. as much as so and so about the Bible.

  358. You might be thinking of someone here this morning.

  359. You're like, if I could pray like them, I mean.

  360. But I can't.

  361. I'm not that sort of prayer warrior.

  362. And it's not that these things aren't admirable things.

  363. I mean, many of us should be aspiring

  364. to grow closer to the Lord in prayer.

  365. And yet one of the beautiful things

  366. about the body of Jesus

  367. is that we get to acknowledge

  368. that he's given us each different measures of faith

  369. and gifting and personality.

  370. And really the only kind of prerequisite for that

  371. is the prerequisite that's happened already

  372. in Ephesians, humble hearts

  373. that recognize their need for the grace of Jesus.

  374. That if we come to the Lord Jesus in humility,

  375. confessing our sin,

  376. believing that his grace alone can redeem us

  377. and give us a new identity,

  378. God can work with humble people

  379. dependent on the grace of Jesus.

  380. And not only does he work with them,

  381. but what Paul wants us to see

  382. is that he actually is intent on giving them gifts.

  383. Right?

  384. This should affect every aspect of our life

  385. as the body of Christ.

  386. It means that on the days

  387. where we're perhaps worn down

  388. about the struggles at home

  389. and our parenting,

  390. I mean, I love the way that

  391. in our membership vows,

  392. we take vows as a community, don't we?

  393. If you're here this morning as a visitor

  394. and you don't know what I'm talking about,

  395. one of the things that happens

  396. when someone joins our churches

  397. in our denomination

  398. is not only do they take vows

  399. about what they believe,

  400. but the congregation takes a vow of commitment

  401. to care for them and their children.

  402. It's a beautiful reflection

  403. of this New Testament idea

  404. that we are all called to the body of Christ

  405. and we all need the variety of gifts

  406. in order to love and serve each other

  407. and our children.

  408. If you think about outreach,

  409. I hope we think about outreach

  410. as the body of Christ.

  411. It can be so discouraging, can't it,

  412. to think about evangelism and outreach.

  413. And we might look at ourselves and say,

  414. well, I'm an introvert

  415. or I have this kind of personality

  416. or I have no interest in that biking and skiing

  417. that he's talking about.

  418. Is God calling me to reach all of the bikers

  419. and skiers in Colorado Springs?

  420. No.

  421. I have a variety of theological reasons

  422. for saying that,

  423. not just this passage.

  424. Right?

  425. But the beauty is,

  426. is that Jesus invites us into a community

  427. where there's other people

  428. to help us love and serve our neighbors.

  429. Right?

  430. That you might have the opportunity

  431. to get to know people

  432. where God has placed you

  433. and say, you know what?

  434. I don't know if I'm very gifted,

  435. but I know someone in my body of Jesus

  436. that actually could really serve you well right now.

  437. And I actually believe

  438. that that's part of what King Jesus wants us to do.

  439. In order for this to happen,

  440. I hope this is obvious to us,

  441. but I'll just mention it.

  442. It just, it can't happen

  443. unless we get to know each other.

  444. Right?

  445. Like if I don't know the body sitting around me,

  446. if I'm not beginning to move towards

  447. the people around me

  448. and get to know who Jesus has called

  449. to my particular church,

  450. it'll be very hard for me

  451. to actually practically live out

  452. this idea of the gifting of Jesus.

  453. And this is a place where,

  454. we're about to talk about elders in just a moment,

  455. but this is a place where you could perhaps

  456. go to the leadership of your church

  457. and ask some of these questions.

  458. If you're wrestling with something

  459. or you're struggling with something

  460. and you're wondering,

  461. well, how has the church gifted?

  462. How has Jesus gifted this church

  463. that might actually speak to this area?

  464. This might be a great place

  465. to get to know your elders.

  466. And they might have a better idea,

  467. a better grasp on the ways

  468. that King Jesus has already gifted this church.

  469. Oh, well, so-and-so is actually

  470. like this fantastic prayer warrior.

  471. And they would probably love

  472. to come alongside you in prayer.

  473. Let's start with going to Jesus in prayer.

  474. Because as we accept the giftings of Jesus,

  475. the fact that the body of Christ

  476. is always a gifted body

  477. because King Jesus loves to give gifts,

  478. that actually moves us to be an equipped body.

  479. And that's the second thing

  480. I want us to see in this passage.

  481. That as we begin to accept the idea

  482. that King Jesus gives gifts,

  483. it actually leads us to long to be an equipped body.

  484. And it begins by seeing what gifts Paul mentions here.

  485. And this is actually, I'll just mention this.

  486. This is a passage I love to go to with college students

  487. to kind of explain the importance of the local church,

  488. why Jesus is calling them to the church.

  489. Because this one, I think always,

  490. I've never mentioned this passage to a college student

  491. and not had some degree of surprise at this point.

  492. But I want you to ask the question,

  493. what gifts does Paul mention in this passage?

  494. Let's look at verse 11, right?

  495. After talking about the risen, ascended Jesus,

  496. he says, and he gave.

  497. What did he give Paul?

  498. The apostles, the prophets, the evangelists,

  499. the shepherds, and teachers.

  500. I just want to stop there and say,

  501. the first thing he names

  502. is probably not the thing you or I would name, right?

  503. Like if we were just like,

  504. hey, what sort of gifts does Jesus give the church?

  505. We'd probably be quick to run to spiritual gifts.

  506. We might run to some of the character qualities of Jesus,

  507. the fruit of the spirit.

  508. That would be, those are wonderful answers.

  509. But here, Paul goes to church offices.

  510. That's not my first thing.

  511. I am in a church office.

  512. The way REF functions,

  513. I'm actually a teaching elder,

  514. ordained in the same way our local pastors ordained

  515. and then sent to the college campus.

  516. I am in a church office

  517. and I would never first answer,

  518. say, what gifts does Jesus give church offices?

  519. Right?

  520. Here he's saying that Jesus has actually given

  521. specific roles to his people,

  522. specific offices to actually help them be equipped

  523. and encouraged and built up.

  524. The first we are actually seeing

  525. as we look at scripture together.

  526. When we look at God's word together,

  527. we are seeing the gifts of that apostolic office,

  528. that specific office of people

  529. that were sent out in the early church,

  530. witnesses of Jesus,

  531. to give authoritative scripture.

  532. We don't have time this morning

  533. for me to make the more kind of full-orbed argument

  534. for how that word apostle really speaks

  535. to that specific revelatory office,

  536. but I'm sure your elders would love

  537. to sit down and talk to you about that.

  538. So that's one thing that is mentioned here.

  539. Another thing that's mentioned

  540. is evangelists, church planters,

  541. those who have a special gift

  542. in planting and growing churches

  543. and doing evangelism and going to places

  544. and sharing the gospel.

  545. I'll just admit,

  546. sometimes when people are like,

  547. what do you do?

  548. Why do you do it?

  549. How do we make sense

  550. of why you should even be doing what you're doing?

  551. Sometimes I'm like,

  552. you know, I struggle with that question too,

  553. just to be honest.

  554. But sometimes, like,

  555. I do kind of point to this idea

  556. that even in the early church,

  557. there was this idea of the church

  558. sending out evangelists to places.

  559. Go to this place and spread the gospel.

  560. And there is the hope of,

  561. often of planting churches,

  562. but the idea of like going to the college campus,

  563. go beyond the college campus

  564. and preach the gospel

  565. and reach our covenant children

  566. and help equip them

  567. to reach and serve their classmates

  568. and bear witness to Jesus.

  569. All right.

  570. The one I want us to focus on this morning

  571. just to be mindful of the most,

  572. I think,

  573. because it's so relevant

  574. in the local body of believers,

  575. is the shepherds and teachers.

  576. Jesus actually gifts his church

  577. with this office of shepherds and teachers

  578. because at the heart of the idea of church

  579. is this idea of the gathering

  580. and perfecting of the saints.

  581. That's language that our confession uses

  582. to kind of summarize

  583. that the purpose of the church,

  584. this idea that King Jesus

  585. is drawing his people to himself.

  586. And as he draws his people to himself

  587. through the ministry of the word and prayer,

  588. he's then equipping them

  589. to serve one another

  590. and to serve the world around them

  591. to his glory.

  592. Just as we've confessed, right?

  593. It's getting back at that chief end of man

  594. to glorify God,

  595. to enjoy him forever.

  596. Jesus has gifted these offices

  597. to draw us together

  598. so that we might enjoy

  599. and delight in God

  600. and point others

  601. to that matchless glory,

  602. that worthy God and Savior.

  603. And just,

  604. I want us to see

  605. just the weight of this call

  606. and this office

  607. and the role it has.

  608. In Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  609. I think it's a special place for us to go

  610. because we're in the book of Ephesians.

  611. Paul is kind of saying his last words

  612. to the elders of Ephesus, right?

  613. The same people that he's writing to here.

  614. And notice the weight

  615. that he gives them to this office.

  616. And it's actually a place

  617. where he uses these words

  618. that we often use interchangeably

  619. like elder, pastor,

  620. even overseer, bishop.

  621. Those words all appear

  622. in verb or noun form

  623. in this short kind of exhortation.

  624. But in Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  625. speaking to the Ephesian elders,

  626. Paul says this,

  627. now for Miletus,

  628. he sent to Ephesus

  629. and called the elders of the church

  630. to come to him.

  631. And then in verse 28,

  632. this is what he says,

  633. pay careful attention

  634. to yourself

  635. and to all the flock

  636. in which the Holy Spirit

  637. has made you overseers.

  638. It's that bishop word.

  639. To care for the church

  640. of God,

  641. which he obtained

  642. with his own blood.

  643. Right?

  644. From the early days

  645. of the church,

  646. King Jesus has been

  647. gifting people,

  648. calling them to this unique office

  649. to care for the flock of God.

  650. To care for the flock

  651. that Jesus shed his blood for.

  652. And so I think

  653. there's a lot of application

  654. here for us

  655. as we see Paul

  656. in Ephesians 4 say,

  657. part of the giftings

  658. of Jesus

  659. are these offices

  660. is how do we encourage

  661. or support these offices?

  662. In other words,

  663. are we availing ourselves

  664. of the gift of Jesus?

  665. Have you in recently

  666. or in the past year

  667. thought to yourself,

  668. well, you know,

  669. I'm trying to grow

  670. closer to Jesus.

  671. I need to avail myself

  672. of the gift

  673. of the elders

  674. and deacons

  675. of this church.

  676. once again,

  677. I'll just raise my hand

  678. and say that's not

  679. something I normally go to.

  680. When I sit down

  681. and ask students,

  682. like,

  683. how are you doing spiritually?

  684. When we kind of get into that,

  685. how do you evaluate

  686. that question?

  687. You know,

  688. how do you gauge that?

  689. What does it look like

  690. for you to actually

  691. be doing well spiritually?

  692. I don't think

  693. I've ever gotten the answer.

  694. You know what?

  695. Like,

  696. I'm really enjoying

  697. the body of Christ

  698. and especially

  699. the gifting of the offices

  700. that Jesus has given

  701. the church.

  702. I would love to have

  703. that answer sometime.

  704. I'd be like,

  705. wow,

  706. that's really mature

  707. and not expected.

  708. Right?

  709. And one of the reasons

  710. I'm excited about being

  711. in this passage with you

  712. is Matthew continues

  713. his sabbatical,

  714. but you're getting closer

  715. to the time of him returning.

  716. I'll just say that

  717. I think it's beautiful

  718. that your church

  719. is practicing

  720. a biblical pattern

  721. of rest

  722. and caring for

  723. the gifting of Jesus

  724. of this office.

  725. But I'll just also confess

  726. that as a pastor

  727. with lots of pastor friends,

  728. I have heard for many say

  729. that like sometimes

  730. coming back from sabbatical

  731. can be really hard.

  732. What does it look like

  733. to reintegrate

  734. into the church?

  735. What does it look like

  736. for you as a congregation

  737. and for other elders

  738. to help Matthew

  739. reintegrate well?

  740. To maybe not be flooded

  741. on day one

  742. with all of the problems

  743. that you think

  744. need to be fixed

  745. right away,

  746. immediately

  747. from everything that happened

  748. while he was gone?

  749. There's a lot of things

  750. that you can be praying about

  751. and thinking about.

  752. Well,

  753. if this is a gift of Jesus,

  754. how can I reflect

  755. that gifting

  756. in the way that

  757. I care for Matthew

  758. and the other elders here?

  759. But this is obviously

  760. a passage that speaks

  761. of the weight

  762. of what we're doing

  763. to the elders as well,

  764. right?

  765. What does it look like

  766. for you elders

  767. and deacons

  768. who are called

  769. to serve the church

  770. and the needs

  771. of the church

  772. and those who are

  773. on the outside

  774. or those who are

  775. in need of mercy,

  776. the leadership

  777. of the church,

  778. what does it look like

  779. for you to care

  780. for this flock?

  781. There's a pastor,

  782. William Still,

  783. one of our seminary professors

  784. because he knew him personally,

  785. he called him Willie.

  786. I just thought

  787. that was so funny.

  788. But William Still

  789. had this beautiful line

  790. about this idea

  791. that in order

  792. to feed the flock,

  793. we must be fed men.

  794. We must be feeding others

  795. out of that drawing,

  796. out of the grace

  797. that Jesus is offering

  798. to us ourselves.

  799. Are you being fed

  800. from the hand of Jesus

  801. so you can turn

  802. as under shepherds

  803. to the flock

  804. and feed them

  805. and care for them as well?

  806. I just want to point out

  807. that the real authority

  808. of this entire model

  809. rests in King Jesus'

  810. authority, doesn't it?

  811. That all of our authority

  812. is subservient

  813. to King Jesus

  814. who is the ascended leader

  815. and this is a beautiful passage

  816. to go and see that.

  817. But it's a challenging passage,

  818. right?

  819. It suggests that there

  820. are many gifts

  821. that Jesus has given

  822. the church

  823. and that it even includes

  824. some of these offices

  825. and people.

  826. I don't often quote

  827. our book of church order

  828. when I preach.

  829. In fact,

  830. I almost never do

  831. and it's probably

  832. a dangerous place

  833. to go at times

  834. just to get lost

  835. in headiness

  836. and ideas

  837. and church government.

  838. But our BCO

  839. beautifully says,

  840. the head of the church

  841. is Christ

  842. and that all of these

  843. offices and gifts

  844. are subservient

  845. to Christ

  846. and his purposes.

  847. And so that the government

  848. of our church

  849. says that Jesus

  850. is the head

  851. of the church

  852. and that image

  853. even of Jesus

  854. being the head

  855. of the church

  856. comes from passages

  857. like this one

  858. where Paul says

  859. that even these giftings,

  860. what are they aimed at?

  861. What does a gifted

  862. and equipped community

  863. aim for?

  864. And that's what we look at

  865. in the final part

  866. of our passage

  867. starting in verse 13,

  868. starting in verse 12 really,

  869. right?

  870. It's an aim

  871. of growing

  872. into loving maturity.

  873. That a gifted church

  874. that believes

  875. that Jesus is calling

  876. it to be

  877. an equipped church

  878. is ultimately aiming

  879. to be a loving,

  880. mature church

  881. that grows

  882. into Christ.

  883. And it starts

  884. in verse 13

  885. with this aim,

  886. right?

  887. And I think

  888. this is so important

  889. for us to begin there

  890. because this is one

  891. of the key verses

  892. in a passage

  893. that once again

  894. is heavy on things

  895. we can be doing

  896. and thinking about

  897. and pursuing.

  898. This is one

  899. of the verses

  900. that I think

  901. gets us back

  902. to the grace

  903. of Jesus,

  904. right?

  905. Until we all

  906. attain to the unity

  907. of faith

  908. and of the knowledge

  909. of the Son of God

  910. to mature manhood

  911. to the measure

  912. of the stature

  913. of the fullness

  914. of Christ.

  915. To go back

  916. to verse 12

  917. and ask this question,

  918. right?

  919. How long do we do

  920. these equipping things?

  921. What does it look like

  922. for us to be seeking

  923. to be equipped

  924. and submitting

  925. to the equipping work

  926. of those God

  927. has placed over us

  928. and for us to begin

  929. moving towards each other

  930. with the hope

  931. of speaking truth

  932. and love

  933. like it's a natural

  934. question to ask,

  935. well,

  936. how long do we do this?

  937. What's the parameters,

  938. right?

  939. Here's the goal.

  940. The measure

  941. of the fullness,

  942. the stature

  943. of the fullness

  944. of Jesus himself.

  945. Now,

  946. if you

  947. are a follower

  948. of Jesus,

  949. I hope your immediate

  950. reaction to that

  951. is,

  952. oh,

  953. forever.

  954. If your reaction

  955. to that verse

  956. is not,

  957. oh,

  958. forever,

  959. like we might need

  960. to go back

  961. to earlier parts

  962. of Ephesians once again

  963. and talk about

  964. what the gospel is.

  965. Right?

  966. This idea

  967. that none of us

  968. is able to save ourselves.

  969. All of us

  970. are sinners

  971. in need of the grace

  972. that Jesus alone offers.

  973. Right?

  974. The measure

  975. of Jesus

  976. is perfection.

  977. It is his fullness

  978. and his holiness.

  979. In other words,

  980. Paul is saying

  981. this is the life

  982. of a Christian.

  983. This is not just

  984. something we do

  985. for a season.

  986. This is what it means

  987. to be a Christian.

  988. It's having been redeemed

  989. by the grace of Jesus

  990. the rest of our lives

  991. we are working together

  992. to grow into maturity,

  993. a maturity

  994. that we will not attain

  995. in this life.

  996. That we will not attain

  997. until Jesus comes

  998. and makes all things new

  999. and every last bit

1000. of sin in the fall,

  1001. every sadness,

  1002. every tear

  1003. is pushed back

1004. and cast into the lake of fire.

  1005. Until that happens,

1006. we all are in this process

  1007. of growth

  1008. and sanctification

  1009. and drawing near

  1010. to each other

  1011. with the hope

  1012. of speaking truth

  1013. and love

  1014. with the goal

  1015. that we would grow

  1016. into loving maturity.

  1017. In verse 14,

  1018. right,

  1019. is this image

  1020. that Paul gives us

  1021. of being anchored,

1022. of not being tossed about

  1023. and blown about.

  1024. I don't know

1025. if you've ever been out

  1026. on a large lake

  1027. or an ocean

1028. when a storm is coming.

1029. It is a terrifying thing.

  1030. One thing we experienced

1031. growing up in South Carolina,

  1032. sometimes we'd go out

  1033. in the intercoastal waterway,

1034. sometimes in our fairly small boat

  1035. we'd venture out

1036. probably further than we should,

  1037. is once that storm

  1038. starts to blow in,

1039. if you thought your anchor

1040. was set and it was not,

  1041. you're done.

  1042. Like,

  1043. it's getting dragged.

1044. It is a terrifying thing

1045. to try and get that anchor set

  1046. once the waves

1047. get to a certain point,

  1048. right?

1049. And one of the things

1050. that Paul wants us to see

  1051. is that we do,

  1052. we Christians have always,

  1053. since the fall,

  1054. lived in a world

1055. that is tossed to and fro,

  1056. that there are doctrines

  1057. that are at times

  1058. of evil origin,

  1059. there's human cunning

  1060. and craftiness,

  1061. there's deceitful schemes.

  1062. That is,

  1063. and some of you

  1064. might have read this,

  1065. looked at this passage

  1066. this morning

  1067. and been like,

  1068. oh man,

  1069. that really feels like

  1070. it hits right now.

  1071. And our temptation

1072. sometimes is to be like,

1073. it's never been as bad

  1074. as it is now.

  1075. And notice that,

  1076. Paul's saying it's pretty bad,

  1077. isn't he,

1078. in the early church times.

1079. That there are all sorts

  1080. of forces and powers

  1081. at work

  1082. that would love

  1083. to deceive us,

  1084. that would love

  1085. to blow us astray,

  1086. that would love

  1087. to blow us,

1088. to crash into one another

  1089. in violence,

  1090. in conflict.

  1091. That,

  1092. in other words,

1093. this sort of loving maturity,

  1094. this sort of growth

  1095. isn't natural to us

  1096. as fallen people,

  1097. as sinners in need

  1098. of God's grace.

  1099. I laugh sometimes,

  1100. you heard me talk

  1101. about my failings,

1102. my lack of a green thumb

  1103. earlier.

  1104. It's popular,

  1105. especially,

  1106. I think,

  1107. among current generations

  1108. to talk about

  1109. things happening organically

  1110. and authenticity

1111. is like a big thing

  1112. right now,

  1113. I think,

  1114. for young people.

  1115. And sometimes

  1116. that word organic

  1117. is thrown around.

  1118. Like,

1119. I just like to let things

  1120. just kind of happen

  1121. and I'm like,

  1122. man,

1123. do you know how hard it is

1124. to get stuff to actually grow

1125. that you want to grow?

  1126. I mean,

1127. if we're talking about weeds,

  1128. sure,

1129. let's just do organic stuff.

  1130. But sometimes organic

1131. is used as just kind of like

  1132. lack of intentionality,

1133. let's just see what happens.

1134. And that's not the picture

  1135. we get here,

  1136. is it,

  1137. of growth in Christ?

  1138. It's a fight,

  1139. it's a struggle.

  1140. There are things

  1141. seeking to draw us

  1142. away from the truth.

1143. And instead of being blown about

1144. what Paul longs for us to do,

1145. we see in verse 15

  1146. that that maturing love

  1147. is a desire

1148. to speak truth in love.

1149. to speak truth in love

1150. so that we can grow

  1151. into Christ.

  1152. In other words,

1153. one of my chief purposes

1154. as a follower of Jesus

1155. is to long to see

  1156. those people around me

1157. in the body of Christ

  1158. grow towards Jesus,

1159. to look more like him,

1160. to see more and more

  1161. how his grace

  1162. is offered to them,

  1163. how his spirit

1164. is at work in them,

1165. that that is a calling

  1166. of every believer

1167. so that we can actually

  1168. work together.

1169. And he gives us this image,

  1170. doesn't he,

  1171. in verse 16

1172. of a body working together

  1173. of joints and ligaments

  1174. and this idea

  1175. that regardless

  1176. of those who might,

1177. some who might be called

  1178. to this office

  1179. to equip the saints,

1180. going back to verses 11 and 12,

1181. that at the end of the day,

1182. all of us in the body of Christ

1183. have an essential role to play

  1184. to be a healthy,

  1185. functioning body.

1186. And we might tend to look

1187. at certain parts of our body

  1188. and say,

  1189. well,

1190. this part's not very glorious,

1191. this part's not that important.

  1192. It's all important.

  1193. And sometimes it's just

  1194. a simple one bone

  1195. being out of place,

  1196. right?

1197. And we can be in great pain

  1198. and we can realize

1199. how hard so many things

  1200. in life are.

1201. One of the most hard things

1202. about our trip to Japan,

  1203. one of our students

  1204. dislocated her hip

  1205. in Japan.

1206. Wasn't on my bingo card.

  1207. I was like,

  1208. this cannot be happening.

  1209. I've skied with students

1210. and biked with students a lot

1211. since we've moved to Colorado

  1212. and I've never had

1213. this traumatic of an injury happen.

  1214. And just that joint

  1215. being out of place

  1216. and a small fracture

  1217. on the femur head

  1218. and it was bad.

  1219. Overnight stay

1220. in a hospital in Japan.

1221. It was just a reminder,

  1222. right?

1223. Like just one little thing

  1224. out of socket,

  1225. just a few ligaments

  1226. out of place

  1227. and you could be

  1228. in such pain

  1229. and so debilitated.

1230. And part of the reason

  1231. I share her story

1232. is while that was true

  1233. of her physically,

  1234. like she,

  1235. she just loves Jesus.

1236. And so she got her crutches

  1237. and she just crutched

  1238. around Tokyo

  1239. pursuing Japanese students,

  1240. talking to them

1241. about the love of Jesus.

1242. At one point we were

  1243. at a dinner

  1244. and I just like

  1245. walked by her table

  1246. and overheard her talking

1247. about who the Holy Spirit is.

  1248. And just,

1249. I mentioned this last week,

  1250. like there are just,

  1251. there are no Christians

  1252. almost in Japan.

  1253. All of these students,

1254. except for two of them

  1255. that we met with

  1256. were just not Christians

1257. and yet she was pursuing them

1258. and she was not letting

  1259. her physical malady

  1260. prevent her from seeing

  1261. that King Jesus

  1262. was excited to work

  1263. through her as well.

  1264. That there's a variety

1265. of giftings in the body

1266. and that he was going

  1267. to make his name

  1268. great and glorious

  1269. even through her

  1270. as she was hobbled

  1271. and hurt.

  1272. You are desperately needed

  1273. not because

  1274. there's anything

  1275. lacking in Jesus

  1276. but because King Jesus

  1277. has chosen

  1278. to work through

  1279. his people

  1280. because the body

  1281. of Christ

  1282. is his plan

  1283. for the advancement

  1284. of his kingdom

  1285. and you,

  1286. you can get it,

  1287. right?

  1288. Like I get it.

  1289. We look around

  1290. at each other

  1291. and we're like,

  1292. I don't know Jesus.

  1293. have you seen

  1294. the ways that I

  1295. continue to fail

  1296. and struggle?

  1297. Have you seen

  1298. the conflict

  1299. we're capable of?

  1300. Like are you sure

1301. you want to hit yourself

  1302. to this wagon?

  1303. Right?

1304. And yet that is what

  1305. Jesus assures

  1306. his people

  1307. that he is going

  1308. to do.

  1309. It's actually,

  1310. he says it's better

  1311. for him to leave

  1312. to his disciples

  1313. because he's going

  1314. to send his spirit

  1315. to work among them.

  1316. Jesus is doing

  1317. something incredible

  1318. among us

  1319. as we draw near

  1320. to him.

  1321. And so I hope

  1322. you're encouraged

  1323. this morning

  1324. by this idea

  1325. that Jesus

  1326. is at work

  1327. among his people,

  1328. that this vision

  1329. of unity

  1330. we talked about

  1331. last week

  1332. is actually

  1333. going to be realized

  1334. by the gifting

  1335. and grace of Jesus

  1336. worked out

  1337. in the lives

  1338. of individuals

  1339. seeking to love

  1340. one another

  1341. and serve one another.

1342. This can only be done

  1343. by the gifting

  1344. of Jesus.

1345. Would you pray with me?

  1346. Gracious Father,

  1347. once again,

  1348. we just thank you

  1349. that you are

  1350. a good, good father

  1351. and you love

  1352. to give your people

  1353. good gifts

  1354. and too often

  1355. perhaps we are prone

  1356. to listen

  1357. to the voice

  1358. of the accuser

  1359. and to deny

  1360. your grace to us

1361. and to say to you,

  1362. no father,

  1363. not me,

  1364. like Moses,

  1365. like don't you want

  1366. someone that can speak

  1367. better?

  1368. And yet,

1369. you are a faithful king.

  1370. you are faithful

  1371. to work through

1372. the lives of your people.

  1373. Your gifting

  1374. is greater

  1375. than our sin.

  1376. Your grace

  1377. is greater

  1378. than our sin.

  1379. You are at work

  1380. through humble,

  1381. dependent,

  1382. needy people

  1383. by the grace

  1384. of Jesus.

  1385. Would you help us

  1386. to love each other

  1387. to your glory?

  1388. Would you help us

  1389. to point one another

  1390. to Jesus

1391. so that we might grow

  1392. into this loving maturity,

  1393. this fullness,

  1394. the stature of Jesus?

  1395. Would you help us

  1396. to labor towards that

  1397. as your people

  1398. this morning

1399. we ask in Jesus' name.

  1400. Amen.
