  1. They came up to him saying, Hail King of the Jews, and struck him with their hands.

  2. ! Pilate went out again and said to them, See, I am bringing him out to you, but I want you to know that I do not find him guilty of any crime.

  3. So Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate said to them, Behold the man.

  4. When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, Crucify him, crucify him.

  5. Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.

  6. John 19, verses 7 to 13 from the New Living Translation.

    John 19:7–13

  7. The Jewish leaders replied, By our law he ought to die because he called himself the Son of God.

  8. When Pilate heard this, he was more frightened than ever.

  9. He took Jesus back into the headquarters again and asked him, Where are you from?

  10. But Jesus gave no answer.

  11. Why don't you talk to me, Pilate demanded.

  12. Don't you realize that I have the power to release you or crucify you?

  13. Then Jesus said, You would have no power over me at all unless it was given to you from above.

  14. So the one who handed me over to you has a greater sin.

  15. Then Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leader shouted,

  16. If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar.

  17. Anyone who declares himself a king is a rebel against Caesar.

  18. When they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again.

  19. Then Pilate sat down on the judgment seat on the platform that is called the stone pavement, in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

  20. Now it was the day of preparation of the Passover.

  21. It was about the sixth hour.

  22. He said to the Jews, Behold, your king.

  23. They cried out, Away with him.

  24. Away with him.

  25. Crucify him.

  26. Pilate said to them,

  27. Shall I crucify your king?

  28. The chief priests answered,

  29. We have no king but Caesar.

  30. So he delivered him over to them to be crucified.

  31. So they took Jesus and he went out,

  32. bearing his own cross,

  33. to the place called the place of a skull,

  34. which in Aramaic is called Golgotha.

  35. There they crucified him.

  36. And with him two others,

  37. one on either side and Jesus between them.

  38. Pilate also wrote an inscription and put it on the cross.

  39. It read,

  40. Jesus of Nazareth, the king of the Jews.

  41. Many of the Jews read this inscription,

  42. for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city.

  43. And it was written in Aramaic,

  44. in Latin,

  45. and in Greek.

  46. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate,

  47. Do not write the king of the Jews,

  48. but rather,

  49. This man said,

  50. I am the king of the Jews.

  51. Pilate answered,

  52. What I have written,

  53. I have written.

  54. When the soldiers had crucified Jesus,

  55. they took his garments and divided them into four parts,

  56. one part for each soldier,

  57. also his tunic.

  58. But the tunic was seamless,

  59. woven in one piece from top to bottom.

  60. So they said to one another,

  61. Let us not tear it,

  62. but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.

  63. This was to fulfill the scripture which says,

  64. They divided my garments among them,

  65. and for my clothing they cast lots.

  66. So the soldiers did these things.

  67. But standing by the cross of Jesus

  68. were his mother and his mother's sister,

  69. Mary, the wife of Clopas,

  70. and Mary Magdalene.

  71. When Jesus saw his mother

  72. and the disciples whom he loved standing nearby,

  73. he said to his mother,

  74. Woman, behold your son.

  75. Then he said to the disciple,

  76. Behold your mother.

  77. And from that hour,

  78. the disciple took her to his own home.

  79. Jesus, knowing that all was now finished,

  80. said to fulfill the scripture,

  81. I thirst.

  82. A jar full of sour wine stood there.

  83. So they put a sponge full of the sour wine

  84. on a hyssop branch

  85. and held it to his mouth.

  86. When Jesus had received the sour wine,

  87. he said,

  88. It is finished.

  89. And he bowed his head

  90. and gave up his spirit.

  91. Since it was the day of preparation

  92. and so that the bodies would not remain

  93. on the cross on the Sabbath,

  94. for that Sabbath was a high day,

  95. the Jews asked Pilate

  96. that their legs might be broken

  97. and that they might be taken away.

  98. So the soldiers came

  99. and broke the legs of the first

  100. and of the other

  101. who had been crucified with him.

  102. But when they came to Jesus

  103. and saw that he was already dead,

  104. they did not break his legs.

  105. But one of the soldiers

  106. pierced his side with a spear,

  107. and at once there came out blood and water.

  108. He who saw it has borne witness.

  109. His testimony is true,

  110. and he knows that he is telling the truth

  111. that you also may believe.

  112. For these things took place

  113. that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  114. Not one of his bones will be broken.

  115. And again, another scripture says,

  116. They will look on him

  117. who may have pierced.

  118. After these things,

  119. Joseph of Arimathea,

  120. who was a disciple of Jesus,

  121. would secretly, for fear of the Jews,

  122. ask Pilate that he might take away

  123. the body of Jesus.

  124. And Pilate gave him permission.

  125. So he came and took his body.

  126. Nicodemus also,

  127. who earlier had come to Jesus by night,

  128. came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes,

  129. about 75 pounds in weight.

  130. So they took the body of Jesus

  131. and bound it in linen cloths with the spices,

  132. as is the burial custom of the Jews.

  133. Now in the place where he was crucified,

  134. there was a garden,

  135. and in the garden,

  136. a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

  137. So because of the Jewish day of preparation,

  138. since the tomb was close at hand,

  139. they laid Jesus there.

  140. Amen.

  141. So as we reflect this evening

  142. upon the death of Christ,

  143. hopefully we've seen from his word,

  144. we've sung of the effects of that death,

  145. and we've seen that on that last Friday of Jesus's life,

  146. that his life,

  147. the purpose of his life was his death.

  148. And as we reflect for a few minutes this evening,

  149. and the remaining time that we have,

  150. we're going to think on those things.

  151. And so before we do,

  152. let's ask the Lord to bless our time together.

  153. Lord, we thank you for your word,

  154. we thank you for the reminder

  155. that comes from scripture of the work of Christ,

  156. and especially the work of Christ on the cross.

  157. And as we reflect these many years later,

  158. we give you thanks.

  159. And Father, may you work in our hearts' faith

  160. because of these things.

  161. And we ask this in his name.

  162. Amen.

  163. So I want to turn our attention

  164. before we begin to the section that Deanna read,

  165. John 19, 28 through 30.

  166. And in the time that we have together,

  167. I just want to talk and reflect a little bit

  168. on something that she read.

  169. It's the reality of the death of Christ.

  170. And we see it most clearly in those first couple verses.

  171. And as we do so,

  172. I want us to think about the phrase

  173. that we probably all know

  174. and have even maybe said

  175. in anger at someone because of their laziness.

  176. It's that phrase,

  177. the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

  178. We don't know where that phrase comes from.

  179. Some people think it's Edmund Burke,

  180. the explorer, who said,

  181. all that's necessary for evil to triumph

  182. is for good men to do nothing.

  183. Some people think it's the development

  184. of some kind of proverb over the ages.

  185. And yet others think it's Bernard of Clairvaux,

  186. who's a French theologian,

  187. whose song we'll sing in a minute.

  188. But in that phrase,

  189. which's been taken on the lips of everyone

  190. from Mohammed to John Wesley,

  191. we see in that phrase

  192. that there's this slide

  193. into eternal obscurity or even worse.

  194. And in it,

  195. the participants either unwillingly,

  196. but definitely unwittingly,

  197. they don't even really know

  198. how they got there on that road.

  199. But in the life of Jesus,

  200. we see the exact opposite,

  201. especially when we reflect

  202. on what happened on this Friday so long ago.

  203. You see,

  204. in the life of Jesus Christ

  205. and really in his death,

  206. we see a road that is paved

  207. directly to the cross.

  208. But it's not a road to hell,

  209. it's a road to heaven.

  210. It's built brick by brick,

  211. stone by stone,

  212. paved directly to heaven

  213. by the suffering,

  214. by the blood,

  215. by the death of Christ

  216. to glory.

  217. It's real

  218. and it's purposeful.

  219. His death

  220. gives us life.

  221. And as we reflect this evening on that,

  222. we're gonna talk about those things.

  223. It's real

  224. and it's purposeful.

  225. The road to heaven

  226. and the road to hell.

  227. Even when I put those two together,

  228. they kind of stand in contrast.

  229. It might even be provoking,

  230. like which road am I on?

  231. Is there another way?

  232. Which road are you on?

  233. You see,

  234. the person of Jesus

  235. forces us to choose

  236. in one of those ways.

  237. And if you've remembered,

  238. over the last couple months,

  239. we've been walking

  240. every time I've spoken

  241. through the Gospel of John

  242. with the statements of Jesus.

  243. And there's this question

  244. that lingers among those statements.

  245. Who is Jesus?

  246. Or who am I

  247. when he is speaking?

  248. But there's this second question

  249. that's at sometimes

  250. explicit

  251. when Jesus is speaking

  252. to people.

  253. And sometimes

  254. it's hidden in the background

  255. and John brings it forth

  256. as the writer.

  257. What are you going to do

  258. with Jesus?

  259. What does it mean

  260. for you

  261. to have faith in him?

  262. What do you think

  263. about him?

  264. It kind of evokes

  265. this idea

  266. of it's a dividing line.

  267. It's a plumb line.

  268. It's the diversion

  269. of these two roads.

  270. What do you think

  271. about him?

  272. What do you think

  273. about the death

  274. of Christ?

  275. If it's one

  276. of rejection,

  277. is it one

  278. of neutrality

  279. that kind of slides

  280. into rejection?

  281. Is it one

  282. of apathy?

  283. Which really isn't

  284. apathy at all

  285. as Jesus tells us.

  286. Or is it one

  287. that really

  288. we're embarrassed

  289. to say

  290. it's one

  291. of quietly

  292. dismissing it

  293. because we're

  294. modern people

  295. that keep

  296. modern company.

  297. But that kind of

  298. begs the question

  299. that it can't be real,

  300. can it?

  301. But it is real.

  302. It's real

  303. because the gospel

  304. of John

  305. says it's real.

  306. It's real

  307. for these reasons.

  308. You can't

  309. have the death

  310. of Christ

  311. and still

  312. have Jesus.

  313. And that's often

  314. what we think.

  315. You see,

  316. it's palatable

  317. to our minds

  318. and even our senses

  319. to want Christ.

  320. You know,

  321. there's certain benefits

  322. if we try to

  323. separate those

  324. two things.

  325. We get all

  326. these great sayings.

  327. We get all

  328. of these

  329. great examples

  330. to follow

  331. in different

  332. situations.

  333. We get

  334. his teaching,

  335. but you don't

  336. get any of that

  337. without his death

  338. because they're

  339. bound together.

  340. And there have

  341. been attempts

  342. over history,

  343. even in our

  344. day,

  345. to kind of

  346. disentangle

  347. them.

  348. But when we

  349. do that,

  350. we don't make

  351. his sayings

  352. useful

  353. or his example

  354. helpful.

  355. Instead,

  356. what we do

  357. is we call

  358. him a liar.

  359. And when we

  360. do that,

  361. we think

  362. that we can

  363. have him

  364. on our terms.

  365. We think

  366. that all

  367. of those

  368. great things

  369. that he has

  370. done

  371. and all

  372. those great

  373. things that

  374. he has said,

  375. that we can

  376. have all

  377. of those

  378. things.

  379. And then

  380. when we

  381. come to

  382. a section

  383. like John

  384. 19,

  385. we think

  386. that's all

  387. fantasy.

  388. after this,

  389. Jesus,

  390. knowing that

  391. all was

  392. now finished,

  393. said to

  394. fulfill the

  395. scripture,

  396. I thirst.

  397. It seems

  398. pretty innocuous.

  399. It seems

  400. like a very

  401. throwaway

  402. statement.

  403. But in

  404. that,

  405. we see

  406. this culmination

  407. of all

  408. those events

  409. that led

  410. up to

  411. this moment.

  412. We see

  413. in that

  414. the sum

  415. of Christ's

  416. humiliation.

  417. We see

  418. that everything

  419. has been

  420. marching

  421. towards

  422. this fact

  423. of him

  424. being made

  425. low,

  426. that began

  427. when he

  428. came to

  429. this earth,

  430. and that

  431. continued

  432. on in

  433. this last

  434. week of

  435. Jesus.

  436. Mockery.

  437. Humiliation

  438. by being

  439. interrogated

  440. by his

  441. opponents,

  442. or questioned

  443. by even

  444. his closest

  445. followers.

  446. Humiliation

  447. humiliation

  448. that negated

  449. the fact

  450. that God

  451. was here

  452. in his

  453. glory

  454. in human

  455. form.

  456. Humiliation

  457. in that

  458. he was

  459. betrayed

  460. by both

  461. his enemies

  462. and denied

  463. by his

  464. closest

  465. allies.

  466. Humiliation

  467. in being

  468. judged

  469. in court

  470. and then

  471. in the

  472. court of

  473. public

  474. opinion.

  475. Humiliation

  476. in his

  477. being

  478. scourged.

  479. humiliation

  480. in his

  481. marching

  482. to the

  483. cross.

  484. Humiliation

  485. in this

  486. final act

  487. of his

  488. death.

  489. But even

  490. in his

  491. death,

  492. it was

  493. humiliation.

  494. It was

  495. the very

  496. last thing

  497. that could

  498. be done.

  499. It was

  500. the escalation

  501. of all

  502. these things

  503. that had

  504. been building.

  505. You see,

  506. even in

  507. his death,

  508. it was

  509. not easy,

  510. but it

  511. was marked

  512. by suffering.

  513. And we

  514. know this

  515. from the

  516. words that

  517. he spoke.

  518. We know

  519. this because

  520. he exclaims,

  521. I thirst.

  522. And then

  523. in that,

  524. he's not

  525. offered that

  526. same wine

  527. that we know

  528. of from the

  529. other gospels

  530. that people

  531. tried to

  532. hand him

  533. on his

  534. way to

  535. the cross,

  536. that wine

  537. mixed with

  538. myrrh that

  539. would have

  540. made his

  541. suffering easier.

  542. No, it's

  543. not that wine

  544. at all.

  545. Here, it's

  546. just simple,

  547. sour wine.

  548. And it

  549. was this

  550. weird turn

  551. of events.

  552. The same

  553. hyssop that

  554. now offers

  555. him this

  556. sour wine

  557. was the

  558. same hyssop

  559. that was

  560. dipped in

  561. blood.

  562. And for

  563. Israel, it

  564. marked the

  565. doorpost,

  566. saving them

  567. from death,

  568. saving them

  569. from suffering.

  570. And now,

  571. it's extended

  572. to him to

  573. prolong his

  574. suffering.

  575. the blood

  576. on the

  577. frames of

  578. the door

  579. and the

  580. Passover

  581. were offered

  582. by hyssop.

  583. And now,

  584. suffering is

  585. offered to

  586. Christ on

  587. that same

  588. hyssop

  589. branch.

  590. Even in

  591. his death,

  592. humiliation.

  593. Even in

  594. his death,

  595. suffering.

  596. It's real

  597. because it's

  598. the logical

  599. end of all

  600. of his life,

  601. of this

  602. humiliation

  603. that began

  604. in him

  605. coming to

  606. the world.

  607. And now,

  608. on this

  609. final day,

  610. it's real

  611. because

  612. scripture bears

  613. witness to

  614. it.

  615. When we

  616. read of these

  617. events of

  618. the cross,

  619. we're often

  620. confronted with

  621. this idea

  622. of injustice.

  623. And we

  624. think how

  625. unfair

  626. that the

  627. Savior that

  628. was sinless

  629. died,

  630. that sin

  631. held him

  632. there.

  633. And we

  634. can slowly

  635. kind of slip

  636. into this

  637. idea that

  638. this is an

  639. accident,

  640. this is

  641. unfortunate,

  642. and this,

  643. did they

  644. really know

  645. any better?

  646. They were

  647. just confused.

  648. It's

  649. definitely

  650. not

  651. deliberate,

  652. but it's

  653. anything but

  654. that.

  655. The death

  656. of Christ

  657. is for a

  658. purpose.

  659. The death

  660. of Christ

  661. demonstrates

  662. the

  663. intentionality

  664. of God

  665. working in

  666. redemption.

  667. God

  668. is for a

  669. life.

  670. But it's

  671. not just

  672. his death,

  673. it's also

  674. his life

  675. that demonstrates

  676. this.

  677. If you

  678. remember the

  679. miracles of

  680. Jesus,

  681. he often

  682. conducts them

  683. and then he

  684. reminds his

  685. friends or the

  686. person that

  687. has received

  688. this miracle,

  689. he says to

  690. them,

  691. don't tell

  692. anybody,

  693. for my

  694. hour has

  695. not yet

  696. come.

  697. Or he'll

  698. say this

  699. again,

  700. when he heals

  701. or brings

  702. people back

  703. from the

  704. dead,

  705. he'll do

  706. something a

  707. little bit

  708. different and

  709. he'll slip

  710. away in the

  711. crowd even

  712. though they

  713. press in

  714. amongst him

  715. and they

  716. want to

  717. take him.

  718. They're seeking

  719. to capture

  720. him.

  721. He does all

  722. of this so he

  723. can be in

  724. this moment

  725. right here

  726. in John

  727. 19.

  728. And all

  729. along,

  730. Jesus has

  731. reminded his

  732. followers of

  733. this,

  734. life.

  735. That no

  736. one takes

  737. his life

  738. from him,

  739. but he

  740. lays it

  741. down of

  742. his own

  743. accord.

  744. He has

  745. the authority

  746. to lay

  747. it down

  748. and he

  749. has the

  750. authority to

  751. take it

  752. up again.

  753. And that's

  754. the charge

  755. that he

  756. receives from

  757. the father.

  758. Christ's

  759. death is

  760. not by

  761. accident.

  762. Christ's

  763. death is

  764. with a

  765. purpose.

  766. his life

  767. is leading

  768. all to

  769. this moment.

  770. His life

  771. is paving

  772. the way

  773. to the

  774. cross.

  775. Even in

  776. these last

  777. moments,

  778. we see

  779. something

  780. where we

  781. see that

  782. purpose of

  783. his death.

  784. We see

  785. the purposefulness

  786. of his

  787. words.

  788. The last

  789. words of

  790. Christ

  791. show that

  792. to us.

  793. Even in

  794. this request

  795. of sour

  796. wine where

  797. he says,

  798. I thirst.

  799. It's

  800. fulfillment

  801. of the

  802. promise

  803. of Psalm

  804. 69.

  805. David

  806. utters

  807. those words

  808. and Jesus

  809. in his

  810. suffering,

  811. his mind

  812. kind of

  813. steeped in

  814. scripture,

  815. he utters

  816. these words

  817. from Psalm

  818. 69 because

  819. he responds

  820. to seal

  821. the promise

  822. of scripture.

  823. He's given

  824. wine not

  825. out of

  826. pity,

  827. but out

  828. of mockery

  829. is what

  830. Mark tells

  831. us to

  832. prolong

  833. his life,

  834. to prolong

  835. his suffering

  836. for

  837. entertainment.

  838. Even in

  839. his words,

  840. even in

  841. his dying,

  842. there's

  843. humiliation

  844. and suffering.

  845. And he's

  846. able to

  847. cry out

  848. then with

  849. these famous

  850. words after

  851. his thirst

  852. goes away

  853. with,

  854. it is

  855. finished.

  856. And when

  857. he says

  858. this,

  859. it's not

  860. out of

  861. resignation,

  862. it's not

  863. out of

  864. defeat,

  865. it's not

  866. out of

  867. completion

  868. of the

  869. task

  870. of dying.

  871. It's

  872. more than

  873. that.

  874. It's all

  875. of redemptive

  876. history,

  877. that's all

  878. of time

  879. coming to

  880. this moment

  881. in his

  882. death.

  883. The promise

  884. that was at

  885. the beginning,

  886. at the very

  887. beginning,

  888. that man

  889. would crush

  890. the head

  891. of the serpent

  892. and that his

  893. heel would

  894. be bruised.

  895. It's a

  896. fulfillment of

  897. that promise.

  898. It is

  899. finished.

  900. It's the

  901. picture of

  902. all of

  903. these

  904. saviors of

  905. Israel that

  906. we heard

  907. about in

  908. Judges,

  909. except they

  910. leave so

  911. much wanting.

  912. It's that

  913. promise

  914. fulfilled.

  915. It is

  916. finished.

  917. It's the

  918. picture of

  919. all these

  920. kings who

  921. are not

  922. so just

  923. in the

  924. life of

  925. Israel.

  926. That is

  927. finished.

  928. It's this

  929. picture even

  930. in the

  931. worship of

  932. Israel,

  933. the day

  934. of

  935. atonement.

  936. All of

  937. these things

  938. are pointing

  939. forth to

  940. Christ in

  941. this moment.

  942. It's the

  943. promise in

  944. Isaiah that

  945. his wounds

  946. would offer

  947. healing.

  948. It's this

  949. promise over

  950. and over

  951. again of

  952. this very

  953. moment and

  954. this very

  955. point in

  956. time.

  957. And so it's

  958. more than

  959. just words.

  960. it's more

  961. than just

  962. blood.

  963. It's more

  964. than the

  965. blood of

  966. bulls and

  967. goats as

  968. we see in

  969. Leviticus.

  970. It's more

  971. than that

  972. because it

  973. never has to

  974. happen again

  975. and it

  976. never does

  977. because those

  978. things promised

  979. a thing they

  980. couldn't fully

  981. do because they

  982. were pointing

  983. always to

  984. this moment

  985. right here.

  986. it's a

  987. conclusion of

  988. the charge

  989. the father

  990. gave the

  991. son.

  992. Not by

  993. accident,

  994. not by

  995. happenstance,

  996. but on

  997. purpose.

  998. It's a

  999. road paved

  1000. to the

  1001. cross to

  1002. death of

  1003. the Lord

  1004. Jesus Christ

  1005. who gave

  1006. himself for

  1007. our sins to

  1008. deliver us from

  1009. this present

  1010. evil age

  1011. according to

  1012. the will of

  1013. our God

  1014. and father.

  1015. It's planned

  1016. and purposed

  1017. by God.

  1018. What's the

  1019. purpose of

  1020. his death

  1021. though?

  1022. What does it

  1023. accomplish?

  1024. The purpose

  1025. of his death

  1026. is this.

  1027. It does

  1028. something that

  1029. sacrifices

  1030. never could

  1031. do,

  1032. right?

  1033. It's for

  1034. the last

  1035. time.

  1036. There's no

  1037. more need

  1038. for sacrifice.

  1039. There's no

  1040. more need

  1041. because it

  1042. is finished.

  1043. It is

  1044. finished

  1045. because in

  1046. the death

  1047. of Christ

  1048. we find

  1049. the love

  1050. of God

  1051. but we

  1052. find it

  1053. in being

  1054. met

  1055. with the

  1056. wrath of

  1057. God

  1058. against

  1059. sinners.

  1060. There's

  1061. pardon for

  1062. sin,

  1063. not for

  1064. brokenness,

  1065. not for

  1066. anything

  1067. less,

  1068. but full

  1069. on rebellion

  1070. against

  1071. authority.

  1072. Not authority

  1073. of that day,

  1074. not authority

  1075. of the highest

  1076. kind,

  1077. but authority

  1078. of the

  1079. ultimate

  1080. kind of

  1081. all

  1082. eternity.

  1083. It's that

  1084. kind of

  1085. rebellion.

  1086. And in

  1087. that,

  1088. the pardon

  1089. is extremely

  1090. great.

  1091. For the

  1092. creator

  1093. has now

  1094. become the

  1095. redeemer.

  1096. We talk

  1097. often of

  1098. Christ-centered

  1099. Christianity,

  1100. and that's a

  1101. good thing.

  1102. But there's

  1103. nothing less

  1104. than that.

  1105. In fact,

  1106. it's more

  1107. cross-centered.

  1108. It's

  1109. leading all

  1110. to this

  1111. moment,

  1112. because this

  1113. is the

  1114. heart of

  1115. the gospel.

  1116. The gospel

  1117. doesn't

  1118. happen unless

  1119. we have

  1120. the death

  1121. of Christ

  1122. for sinners.

  1123. Because in

  1124. this,

  1125. the Son

  1126. lays down

  1127. his life

  1128. for sinners

  1129. and turns

  1130. away the

  1131. wrath of

  1132. God,

  1133. so that

  1134. we might

  1135. have life.

  1136. And in

  1137. that,

  1138. John will

  1139. write later,

  1140. that in

  1141. that,

  1142. that is

  1143. a picture

  1144. of love.

  1145. And so

  1146. that's why

  1147. we can talk

  1148. about this

  1149. gruesome

  1150. event,

  1151. this injustice,

  1152. and speak

  1153. of it fondly,

  1154. for it has

  1155. purchased

  1156. pardon.

  1157. And how

  1158. do we know

  1159. it worked?

  1160. Because three

  1161. days later,

  1162. we get our

  1163. confirmation.

  1164. So,

  1165. this evening,

  1166. and for all

  1167. time,

  1168. slide not

  1169. into hell,

  1170. but instead,

  1171. remember that

  1172. you are

  1173. carried,

  1174. and you

  1175. are marched

  1176. down the

  1177. road to

  1178. glory,

  1179. not by

  1180. you,

  1181. but by the

  1182. blood,

  1183. suffering,

  1184. and death

  1185. of Christ.

  1186. That is what

  1187. carries you.

  1188. May we

  1189. delight in

  1190. his glory,

  1191. and may

  1192. we see

  1193. the real

  1194. purposeful

  1195. death of

  1196. Jesus,

  1197. and worship

  1198. the king,

  1199. so that

  1200. we may

  1201. know the

  1202. love of

  1203. God.

  1204. Let's pray.

  1205. Lord,

  1206. we're

  1207. thankful this

  1208. evening for

  1209. the reflection

  1210. upon

  1211. Christ's

  1212. death.

  1213. May you

  1214. work in

  1215. our hearts

  1216. to remind

  1217. us of this,

  1218. to carry it

  1219. forward with

  1220. us,

  1221. and Father,

  1222. may we

  1223. worship you,

  1224. and may we

  1225. rejoice at

  1226. his sacrifice.

  1227. We ask this

  1228. in Christ's

  1229. name.

  1230. Amen.
