  1. Please be seated.

  2. This morning we're going to continue our series, or the series that I've been doing every time you've seen me during Matthew's sabbatical, through the I Am statements of Jesus.

  3. And this morning we come to John 10. It's a familiar one, but we're going to be talking about a kind of unfamiliar statement of Jesus.

  4. So if you have a Bible, you can turn with me to John 10. If you have a bulletin, you can turn there as well. The text is printed before you.

  5. John 10, verses 1 through 10.

    John 10:1–10

  6. Truly, truly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs in by another way, that man is a thief and a robber.

  7. But he who enters the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

  8. To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

  9. When he has brought out all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. A stranger they will not follow.

  10. But they will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers.

  11. This figure of speech Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

  12. So Jesus again said to them,

  13. Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.

  14. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.

  15. I am the door, and if anyone enters by me, he will be saved.

  16. He will go in and out and find pasture.

  17. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.

  18. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.

  19. Let's pray.

  20. Lord, we thank you for your word.

  21. We ask for your spirit.

  22. Give it more and more measure, even now.

  23. May we see the glory of Jesus through this text.

  24. And may we worship you through Christ, your son, because of it.

  25. And we pray this in Christ's name.

  26. Amen.

  27. I don't know if you've heard this.

  28. I've become recently fascinated with this idea, this part of Colorado culture,

  29. that we have castles in Colorado.

  30. It's kind of bizarre.

  31. But they're not just any castles.

  32. We have one here in the Springs, up by Garden of the Gods,

  33. and there's one that's south of Fort Carson, down towards Pueblo.

  34. Now, I don't want to insult anyone, and chances are there's somebody in this congregation

  35. that knows one of the owners of these castles,

  36. and I don't mean this with any malintent.

  37. But they're not castles.

  38. They're lacking one really important feature,

  39. because none of these castles, either the one north of us,

  40. or the one down towards Pueblo, or the other ones all around the state,

  41. none of them have walls.

  42. So they're not castles.

  43. They're missing the critical components.

  44. And if you have watched a documentary,

  45. I think there was a castle documentary,

  46. or you've visited around Europe, or even been to Asia,

  47. you will see castles that have walls.

  48. If you watch Frozen, Elsa's house has a wall.

  49. If you visit Disney World, you'll see what I'm talking about.

  50. Castles have walls.

  51. They're fortified.

  52. They have moats.

  53. Some even have a drawbridge.

  54. And that's the genius of them,

  55. because they're fortified in a way,

  56. they're made and structured in such a way

  57. that there's one way in and one way out.

  58. It keeps the people inside safe.

  59. That's the purpose of the castle.

  60. It's to keep intruders out,

  61. and keep the people safe inside.

  62. And there's one way in and one way out.

  63. Whether it's a castle,

  64. or Robert Frost, who reminds us,

  65. the only way out is through it,

  66. or a gate to your backyard,

  67. or a bridge across that,

  68. the one bridge across the river,

  69. or a tunnel through the mountainside.

  70. There's one way in.

  71. One way.

  72. It might be a castle.

  73. It might be a bridge.

  74. It might be in architecture.

  75. It might be in literature.

  76. It might be in nature.

  77. We see that idea that there's one way in

  78. in this text this morning.

  79. The only way into the sheepfold is through the door.

  80. Jesus is telling them,

  81. and he's telling us,

  82. there's one way into the sheepfold.

  83. There's one way,

  84. and it's through that door.

  85. There are no side doors.

  86. There's no cracks.

  87. There's no alternate plans to get inside.

  88. There is one way,

  89. and he's really clear about it.

  90. Now, whenever we hear something like that,

  91. some of you,

  92. and I might be one of you too,

  93. I think in my mind,

  94. because I'm maybe an outside-the-box thinker,

  95. or I'm a contrarian,

  96. you tell me the sky's blue,

  97. I tell you,

  98. no, it's pale blue.

  99. If you're one of those,

  100. let me be really clear to you.

  101. This morning,

  102. Jesus says,

  103. in the realm of eternal life,

  104. in the spiritual realm,

  105. there is one way.

  106. There is one way in.

  107. And as we look at that this morning,

  108. we're going to contrast two big themes.

  109. One big theme is that

  110. there are thieves and robbers,

  111. and the other big theme

  112. is there is one door.

  113. One door.

  114. Now, this morning,

  115. we read a larger chunk of John 10,

  116. and if we did so,

  117. we're going to focus really on verses 7 through 10.

  118. Verses 7 through 10.

  119. And we're doing that

  120. because we're walking through

  121. the I am statements of Jesus.

  122. It's really important

  123. to look at somebody's life's work,

  124. or what other people have said about them,

  125. but it's even more so important

  126. when we come to the figure of Jesus

  127. to figure out

  128. what has he said about himself.

  129. And that's why we're looking at the I am statements.

  130. And in verses 7 through 10,

  131. he says very clearly,

  132. very plainly,

  133. I am the door.

  134. Now,

  135. what's confusing about this

  136. is often overshadowed

  137. by this more dominant theme of John 10.

  138. We have this idea of the shepherd,

  139. the sheep,

  140. the thieves,

  141. the robbers,

  142. but he says here

  143. that I am the door.

  144. And we're familiar

  145. with that theme of shepherds.

  146. It's idyllic.

  147. We see it

  148. even on the walls of nurseries.

  149. We see it in pictures,

  150. in modern pictures,

  151. of what the good life looks like.

  152. It's pastoral.

  153. It has those warm, fluffy sheep.

  154. Who doesn't love warm, fluffy sheep?

  155. Right?

  156. But Jesus is focusing our attention here

  157. on the fact that he is the door.

  158. Now, if you've been around Christianity

  159. for any amount of time,

  160. this is something that we're familiar with.

  161. Even if you didn't grow up on a farm

  162. or around any kind of sheep

  163. or any kind of livestock,

  164. we know,

  165. because we've heard at some point,

  166. that sheep are not very smart

  167. and they're smelly

  168. and they need a shepherd.

  169. And if they don't have the shepherd,

  170. they're going to run

  171. and go kill themselves.

  172. Now, we all know that.

  173. But why is that such a perpetual,

  174. persistent theme throughout Scripture?

  175. Because it's not just here that we see it.

  176. We see it in all the Old Testament.

  177. Remember, Moses is the great shepherd of Israel.

  178. And what happens when Moses isn't there?

  179. The sheep scatter.

  180. They're like sheep without a shepherd.

  181. This idea of a shepherd

  182. is not anything new to us

  183. and it's not anything new to them.

  184. So Jesus begins in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  185. with this idea of sheep and a shepherd,

  186. thieves and robbers.

  187. They know the voice of the shepherd.

  188. But then he figures out really quickly

  189. in verse six.

  190. Look at it with me.

  191. The figure of speech

  192. that Jesus was using with them,

  193. they did not understand

  194. what he was saying to them.

  195. It's the great peril of any preacher, right?

  196. We're talking, we're talking,

  197. and all of a sudden you realize

  198. blank faces

  199. and nobody knows what you're talking about.

  200. Or if you're a parent

  201. or you present at work,

  202. you realize at that point,

  203. I have to reattack.

  204. I have to figure out some other way

  205. to explain this

  206. to these people so they understand.

  207. And Jesus is no different.

  208. So in the midst of this big,

  209. grand idea of him being the great shepherd,

  210. he says,

  211. instead,

  212. I am the door.

  213. He says in verse seven,

  214. truly, truly,

  215. I say to you,

  216. I am the door of the sheep.

  217. Now before we get to that door,

  218. let's look at that other big theme,

  219. the one of thieves and robbers.

  220. We're going to look at who they are

  221. and what they do for each of them,

  222. who they are and what they do.

  223. If the robbers are supposed to be there,

  224. how did they get there?

  225. Well, they're not supposed to be there at all.

  226. They kind of enter in like mice.

  227. They find any crack or way to get through,

  228. but they don't come through the front door.

  229. You don't invite mice through your front door.

  230. They get into your house through another way.

  231. Same with a robber.

  232. You don't invite him through the front door.

  233. Keep that in mind

  234. because often we think about thieves and robbers

  235. in contrast to Jesus.

  236. We'd think they're misguided or misinformed.

  237. If they just knew better,

  238. it would be a little bit different.

  239. But you don't think about that

  240. when a robber's in your home

  241. and grabbing all your stuff.

  242. You don't think that he's misguided or misunderstood.

  243. You just say,

  244. I want my stuff.

  245. Don't take my stuff.

  246. It doesn't matter what their intentions are

  247. because the effects are devastating.

  248. Who are they?

  249. Verse eight tells us really clearly who they are.

  250. All who came before me are thieves and robbers,

  251. but the sheep did not listen to them.

  252. All became before me.

  253. Does that mean every person before Jesus' time

  254. was a thief and a robber?

  255. Was it all those faithful men of scripture?

  256. Was it all the judges,

  257. all the prophets,

  258. all the kings?

  259. Was it John the Baptist?

  260. Is he a thief?

  261. Is he a robber?

  262. No, he doesn't mean that.

  263. He means something a little different.

  264. How do we know that though?

  265. How do we know he's not talking

  266. about all those Old Testament saints?

  267. Because he talks very positively

  268. about someone that we just talked about earlier,

  269. Abraham.

  270. When those opponents of Jesus came to him,

  271. he said,

  272. Abraham,

  273. they asked him,

  274. is he greater than you?

  275. Are you greater than Abraham?

  276. Are you confused?

  277. And Jesus answers very clearly

  278. to what they asked him.

  279. Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day.

  280. And then they get even more confused

  281. and say,

  282. how do you know that?

  283. Like,

  284. you guys didn't cross paths.

  285. You're young.

  286. He's old.

  287. And he answers with the scandalous,

  288. I am.

  289. And then they get really angry

  290. and they try to kill Jesus.

  291. The thieves,

  292. the robbers,

  293. are not the ones

  294. who came before in scripture.

  295. They're the ones he's talking to now.

  296. They're the ones who should have been

  297. the shepherds of Israel.

  298. They're the ones

  299. right there,

  300. right now.

  301. Think about this.

  302. Who are the Sadducees?

  303. What are they doing

  304. during Jesus' time?

  305. They're profiting off of God's people

  306. and their worship.

  307. Who are the Pharisees?

  308. Mark reminds us

  309. that they do this.

  310. They walk around in long robes.

  311. They liked greetings in the street.

  312. They want the best seats in the synagogue.

  313. They want the places of honor at feast.

  314. All the while,

  315. they're devouring the widow's houses.

  316. Luke reminds us

  317. the Pharisees were lovers of money.

  318. Those are the thieves and the robbers.

  319. They should have been shepherds,

  320. but instead,

  321. they're preying on the very sheep

  322. they were supposed to protect,

  323. supposed to feed,

  324. just like Ezekiel reminds us.

  325. The opponents that John's speaking about,

  326. the thieves and robbers,

  327. are those people that in John 9,

  328. immediately before this,

  329. if you have a Bible,

  330. got angry that Jesus healed a blind man.

  331. And Jesus responds

  332. and reminds them that they are blind.

  333. They can't see the true picture,

  334. the true beauty of the gospel.

  335. They don't know as much as they think.

  336. They are the thieves and robbers.

  337. The emphasis is on are.

  338. They are the robbers.

  339. Not they were the robbers.

  340. They are present.

  341. They are active even now.

  342. But what do the robbers do?

  343. The robbers do this.

  344. Verse 10 tells us,

  345. the thief comes only to steal,

  346. kill, and destroy.

  347. They don't seek out the best interests of the sheep.

  348. They don't care for them.

  349. They don't care about the people of Israel.

  350. They don't feed them.

  351. Their motivation is their own profit

  352. and their own desires.

  353. That's who the thieves and robbers are.

  354. If you've ever had a babysitter

  355. when you were a kid

  356. or you've been a parent,

  357. the babysitter is supposed to put kids down to sleep

  358. at night.

  359. That's what we pay you for, right?

  360. But then,

  361. when you show back up,

  362. the babysitter has invited over her boyfriend.

  363. Another man has entered your home.

  364. They've neglected what they were supposed to do,

  365. put the kids to sleep,

  366. and then you come home

  367. to find a stranger in your house.

  368. The babysitter is probably not going to work for you again.

  369. But their responsibility

  370. is to care for their children.

  371. The responsibility

  372. of these shepherds

  373. is to care for the sheep of Israel,

  374. to care for the people.

  375. And they've actually

  376. only concerned

  377. themselves

  378. with themselves.

  379. They've used the sheep

  380. for their own gain.

  381. It's a tale as old as time.

  382. This issue

  383. is of false shepherds,

  384. Ezekiel reminds us.

  385. They prey on the sheep.

  386. The thief

  387. only comes to kill

  388. and destroy.

  389. All of us know the story

  390. of Little Red Riding Hood.

  391. And so,

  392. anytime that you

  393. talk about a story,

  394. you risk, like,

  395. ruining the story for everyone.

  396. But everyone knows

  397. the grandma

  398. gets eaten

  399. by the wolf.

  400. Okay?

  401. I didn't spoil it for you.

  402. And Little Red Riding Hood

  403. doesn't recognize

  404. that

  405. the wolf

  406. has eaten the grandma

  407. because

  408. with all the gleaming teeth

  409. she's wearing,

  410. or the wolf is wearing

  411. the grandma's clothes.

  412. that's often

  413. what we think of

  414. when we think of

  415. these people

  416. that are thieves

  417. and robbers.

  418. But the picture

  419. is not that.

  420. It's instead

  421. the grandma herself

  422. has turned

  423. on Little Red Riding Hood.

  424. She was supposed

  425. to take care of her.

  426. She was supposed

  427. to protect her.

  428. But instead,

  429. she eats

  430. Little Red Riding Hood

  431. just like the wolf.

  432. That's the picture

  433. that we have in John.

  434. That's the picture

  435. that we have

  436. in Ezekiel.

  437. the grandma

  438. has turned

  439. on the little girl.

  440. These images

  441. are both in view

  442. in John 10

  443. and Ezekiel.

  444. The thieves

  445. and the robbers

  446. are charged

  447. to protect God's people

  448. and they don't do it.

  449. And these people

  450. that now speak

  451. to Jesus

  452. don't recognize

  453. that they are

  454. the ones doing it.

  455. They don't recognize

  456. the great shepherd

  457. of the sheep

  458. stands before them

  459. and they're talking

  460. about how

  461. they're such

  462. great shepherds.

  463. Do they model

  464. the true shepherd?

  465. Or are they like

  466. Little Red Riding Hood's

  467. grandma

  468. that has eaten her?

  469. How does that apply

  470. to all of us?

  471. Well, one,

  472. we have to be aware.

  473. We have to be on guard

  474. and recognize

  475. that there are

  476. thieves and robbers.

  477. We're reminded

  478. in the first part

  479. of John 10

  480. that there are sheep

  481. and they must know

  482. the voice

  483. of the shepherd.

  484. We have to know

  485. the voice

  486. of the shepherd.

  487. We have to know God.

  488. If you want

  489. a tangible,

  490. practical checklist

  491. of how to prevent

  492. thieves and robbers

  493. from coming in

  494. and devouring

  495. and destroying,

  496. I can't give you that.

  497. But I can give you this.

  498. Remember

  499. that whether

  500. it's me

  501. or Matthew

  502. or the elders

  503. of this church,

  504. the thing that we can

  505. give you

  506. that point you to

  507. more than anything

  508. is not a checklist

  509. against thieves

  510. and robbers

  511. to validate

  512. whether we're doing

  513. things or not doing

  514. things.

  515. If we are pointing

  516. you to God

  517. and giving you

  518. more of him

  519. and away from yourself

  520. and away from us,

  521. that is the only

  522. checklist that we need.

  523. We need more

  524. of God

  525. and more of him

  526. and less of ourselves.

  527. That's the test

  528. of thieves

  529. and robbers.

  530. We're also

  531. to know

  532. our own hearts.

  533. Last week

  534. we were reminded

  535. from Galatians

  536. that the law

  537. doesn't bring life

  538. because the law

  539. we could never

  540. perfectly fulfill

  541. but it shows us

  542. our need of Christ.

  543. In this picture

  544. that Jesus has set up

  545. of these walls

  546. and the door

  547. and only going

  548. through the door,

  549. we often think

  550. through the wall

  551. we can climb over

  552. the wall

  553. and we can get

  554. eternal life.

  555. We can do it

  556. ourselves

  557. but Jesus

  558. is reminding us

  559. the only way in

  560. is through himself,

  561. only through

  562. the gate.

  563. Beware of your own heart,

  564. beware of the thieves

  565. and robbers.

  566. That's one theme.

  567. The second theme

  568. is this,

  569. there is a door

  570. and that door

  571. is Jesus Christ.

  572. He tells us that

  573. very clearly

  574. and then he doubles

  575. down on it.

  576. He says it in seven,

  577. truly, truly,

  578. I say to you,

  579. I am the door

  580. of the sheep

  581. and then he says

  582. in nine,

  583. I am the door

  584. if you're confused.

  585. He's the only

  586. entry point

  587. for salvation.

  588. Jesus is speaking

  589. of himself

  590. saying you cannot

  591. have eternal life,

  592. you cannot have

  593. these great

  594. and glorious pastures

  595. unless you come

  596. through me.

  597. If that doesn't

  598. excite us,

  599. if that doesn't

  600. stir our hearts,

  601. what will?

  602. we can't climb

  603. over the fence.

  604. Christ is calling

  605. each of us

  606. to enter through

  607. that door,

  608. to have this abundance,

  609. to have life,

  610. to have pasture,

  611. to have life

  612. to the full

  613. and if we do not

  614. enter through

  615. that door,

  616. we cannot have it

  617. at all.

  618. That's what he's

  619. speaking to us.

  620. Now,

  621. in our day and age,

  622. we like to think

  623. that there's lots

  624. of ways

  625. that we can have

  626. this good life,

  627. whether it's

  628. pursuit of success,

  629. worldly success,

  630. whether it's

  631. pursuit of the

  632. good life,

  633. of eternal life,

  634. through some

  635. other means,

  636. but those are

  637. all false.

  638. They can only

  639. come through the

  640. door that is

  641. Jesus Christ

  642. and he is really,

  643. really clear

  644. about it.

  645. And so the call

  646. for each of us

  647. this morning

  648. is to come

  649. through Christ,

  650. come to him

  651. because we cannot

  652. have life

  653. or have it

  654. to the full

  655. unless we have

  656. Jesus.

  657. And he invites

  658. all of us.

  659. That might sound

  660. pretty exclusive

  661. to say,

  662. hey,

  663. there's only one

  664. gate into this

  665. sheepfold.

  666. There's only one

  667. gate into this

  668. pen.

  669. There's no other

  670. gate.

  671. And it is

  672. exclusive.

  673. But it's because

  674. it was purchased

  675. with the precious

  676. blood of Jesus

  677. himself.

  678. But it's

  679. inclusive in the

  680. sense that he

  681. has asked all

  682. of us to

  683. come through

  684. Christ and

  685. to come to

  686. him.

  687. The former's

  688. got that right.

  689. They said,

  690. in Christ alone.

  691. But they're just

  692. repeating back

  693. this idea of

  694. scripture,

  695. this idea from

  696. John 10,

  697. that there is

  698. one gate,

  699. there is one

  700. door,

  701. there is no

  702. other.

  703. Some of you

  704. might be

  705. familiar with

  706. the famous

  707. minor league

  708. baseball team,

  709. the Durham

  710. Bulls.

  711. There was a

  712. movie made

  713. about them.

  714. I can't

  715. recommend it.

  716. But the

  717. Durham Bulls

  718. stadium is in

  719. downtown Durham.

  720. Now, it's a

  721. great stadium.

  722. It's built off of

  723. Fenway Park,

  724. which is the

  725. Boston Red Sox.

  726. It's an exact

  727. replica.

  728. But there's one

  729. interesting fact

  730. about this

  731. stadium.

  732. And it's not

  733. anything in the

  734. stadium.

  735. It's what lies

  736. across the street.

  737. Immediately across

  738. the street is the

  739. Durham County

  740. Jail.

  741. people.

  742. And so if you're

  743. a resident,

  744. part-time or

  745. full-time of

  746. the Durham County

  747. Jail, and you

  748. start moving up

  749. the floors, you're

  750. able to watch all

  751. of the Durham Bulls

  752. baseball games.

  753. Now, obviously,

  754. this angered much

  755. of the Durham County

  756. government, but they

  757. didn't do anything

  758. about it for a

  759. really, really long

  760. time.

  761. You see, those

  762. inmates up a couple

  763. floors could watch

  764. all the baseball

  765. games.

  766. They could see the

  767. numbers on the back

  768. of the jerseys, and

  769. they could see the

  770. names.

  771. They could hear the

  772. game.

  773. Didn't matter if it

  774. was night, day game,

  775. they could see all of

  776. it.

  777. And they had a

  778. perfect view, because

  779. it was right out of

  780. center field, and it

  781. was right across the

  782. street.

  783. There wasn't a

  784. better seat in the

  785. house to see all of

  786. the game.

  787. But even though they

  788. could watch,

  789. they're really

  790. different than a fan

  791. who comes and has a

  792. ticket and gets a

  793. hot dog, peanuts, and

  794. can smell the grass,

  795. and is in the stadium.

  796. They can see dimly what

  797. that fan in the game

  798. sees clearly, because

  799. beyond the bars on his

  800. window, he is not at

  801. the game.

  802. He is not in the

  803. stadium.

  804. He is not participating

  805. as a fan.

  806. He cannot see all the

  807. glory.

  808. And when we think of

  809. that prisoner in the

  810. jail looking out onto

  811. the baseball field, we

  812. think of ourselves, or

  813. we should.

  814. Because when we think of

  815. eternal life and what's

  816. promised in John 10, we

  817. think that God gives to

  818. us his greatness.

  819. Not really.

  820. We think so little of

  821. God.

  822. We think that he gives

  823. us something that we

  824. view through the bars of

  825. the jail across the

  826. street.

  827. When he's invited us in

  828. to the glory that's in

  829. the arena.

  830. We see so clearly.

  831. We experience the

  832. abundant life, and we

  833. have it to the full.

  834. But we think so little

  835. of God.

  836. We think so little of

  837. heaven that that's not

  838. attractive.

  839. We esteem it not.

  840. We think that God is

  841. stingy and miserly.

  842. But instead, Paul

  843. reminds us that he has

  844. blessed us with every

  845. spiritual blessing in

  846. Christ Jesus.

  847. All of it is ours in

  848. Christ Jesus.

  849. We all, we experience it

  850. all, and it all turns on

  851. the door that is Jesus

  852. Christ.

  853. We've all been invited to

  854. have life and have it

  855. abundantly.

  856. We've all been invited in

  857. through this door, but

  858. we're called to be on

  859. guard against thieves and

  860. robbers, but we are

  861. promised through the

  862. door of Jesus Christ to

  863. have life and have it to

  864. the full.

  865. He's the only door through

  866. which to enter.

  867. Let's pray.

  868. Amen.

  869. Lord, we thank you for

  870. the clear reminder that

  871. Christ is the only door by

  872. which we might have life

  873. and have it to the full.

  874. We ask that despite the

  875. words and voices in our

  876. day and even in our own

  877. hearts that say we can do

  878. something else, that there

  879. is another way, may we

  880. stand on guard against

  881. robbers and thieves.

  882. And may we find our way

  883. into the pasture through

  884. Christ our Lord.

  885. We ask in his name.

  886. Amen.

  887. Amen.

  888. Amen.

  889. Amen.

  890. Amen.
