  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  4. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  5. This week, we are beginning a series in the story of Abraham, which we find in Genesis chapters 11 through 25.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  6. Genesis, the entire book, is the origin story of God's people, his people Israel, beginning with Abraham.

  7. And you'll notice we're not going to do the entire book. We're just doing chapters 11 through 25.

  8. And the reason for that is we're actually, big picture, preparing to go back into the book of Romans, the letter of Romans.

  9. So you'll remember last year we did Romans chapters 1 through 3, and we took a break.

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  10. Guess what Romans chapter 4 is about?

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  11. Abraham.

  12. Okay, so we're going to continue the pattern of our church, which is to alternate between the Old Testament and the New Testament.

  13. And now this is a rich and layered story, even this specific passage that's in front of us.

  14. And so I just want to disappoint you right at the beginning and tell you that we're not going to talk about everything in Genesis chapter 11 and 12 today.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  15. Okay, so our focus this morning is on the call to Abraham to go.

  16. What we will not spend a lot of time talking about is the word that's repeated throughout this passage, which is bless and blessing.

  17. We're going to come back. We're going to hone in on that next week.

  18. And so we're going to just have a clear focus this week, a clear focus next week.

  19. If you think, hey, we missed some things, yes, we're coming back.

  20. With that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 11, starting in verse 27.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  21. You can turn in your worship guide.

  22. You can turn on your phone.

  23. You can turn in your Bible.

  24. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  25. Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  26. And so that's why we're going to read now Genesis chapter 11, starting at verse 27.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  27. Now these are the generations of Terah.

  28. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

  29. And Haran fathered Lot.

  30. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  31. And Abram and Nahor took wives.

  32. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah,

  33. the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah.

  34. Now Sarai was barren.

  35. She had no child.

  36. Terah took Abram his son and Lot, the son of Haran, his granddaughter,

  37. and Sarai, his daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife.

  38. And they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan.

  39. But when they came to Haran, they settled there.

  40. The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in Haran.

  41. Chapter 12.

  42. Now the Lord said to Abram,

  43. Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.

  44. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great,

  45. so that you will be a blessing.

  46. I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse.

  47. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  48. Verse 4.

  49. So Abram went as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him.

  50. Abram was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.

  51. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son,

  52. and all their possessions that they had gathered,

  53. and the people they had acquired in Haran,

  54. and they set out to go to the land of Canaan.

  55. When they came to the land of Canaan,

  56. Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Morah.

  57. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land.

  58. Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said,

  59. To your offspring I will give this land.

  60. So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

  61. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel,

  62. and pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east.

  63. And there he built an altar to the Lord, and called upon the name of the Lord.

  64. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negev.

  65. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  66. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you,

  67. and thank you this morning that you have spoken to us through your word.

  68. And we ask that you would do it again this morning.

  69. That you would open our eyes, that you'd unstop our ears,

  70. that you would clear our minds, you'd soften our hearts.

  71. That we would be able to see, and hear, and believe, and understand

  72. everything that's written about you in your word.

  73. Most of all, we ask that you would help us to see Jesus.

  74. We'd see him in his glory, and power, and majesty, and holiness, and authority,

  75. and his mercy, and his grace, and his love.

  76. That you would grow our love and our affection for him,

  77. our reverence and our awe for him.

  78. You'd grow our obedience to him.

  79. We come grateful that we don't have to worry this morning

  80. about whether we've earned these things or deserve them.

  81. We know that we don't, and so we simply ask for them

  82. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  83. Amen.

  84. Believe it or not, in a galaxy far, far away,

  85. I once was a college student.

  86. And when I was a college student,

  87. I was involved in what's called Reformed University Fellowship,

  88. which is the college ministry of our denomination that we support.

  89. And while I was away, you heard from Jonathan Clark and Wes Cowton,

  90. who are both ministers, campus ministers, with that college ministry.

  91. Actually, fun fact, Wes Cowton and I were in the same RUF together

  92. in North Carolina as students back in the day.

  93. And so as being part of involved in this,

  94. I was part of what was called the servant team,

  95. which was the leadership team for this ministry of students.

  96. And one of the things that we would do is every Sunday night,

  97. we would go over to our college pastor's house,

  98. and he would do a little teaching.

  99. And he would try to do some teaching about,

  100. hey, what does it look like to do ministry here on this college?

  101. If you're like me,

  102. there are plenty of sermons and talks and teachings

  103. that you have completely forgotten.

  104. And there are moments that stand out in your mind

  105. that you will never forget.

  106. Where a pastor or a teacher said something

  107. and it just stuck with you forever.

  108. And I remember one night,

  109. our campus pastor was going through Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  110. what we just looked at together,

  111. and he looked us all dead in the eyes and said this,

  112. following God's call always involves loss.

  113. Following God's call always involves loss.

  114. And then what he went on to say,

  115. and I think this actually might be why I remember this,

  116. is he said, you know, on Sunday afternoons,

  117. when I think about us meeting on Sunday night,

  118. sometimes I think about how nice it would just be

  119. to be all by myself and to not do this.

  120. Which seemed a little awkward then, it still does now.

  121. And of course, his college students were like,

  122. wait, what?

  123. This 35-year-old doesn't want to hang out with us all the time?

  124. But he said, no, but I get together with you all

  125. on Sunday evenings, even as it's a loss to me

  126. and what I might want to do with my rest and relaxation

  127. because God and his kingdom are worth it.

  128. And he was right.

  129. This passage presents us with the call to lose.

  130. It's right here.

  131. The very first interaction that God and Abraham have,

  132. chapter 12, verse 1, is a command, go.

  133. And it's not just go, it is go from.

  134. And we see this increasing intensity.

  135. First of all, you're going to go from your country.

  136. Okay, that's bad.

  137. Not as bad as what comes next, your kindred, your family.

  138. And then at the end, it gets even worse,

  139. your father's house, those who are closest to you.

  140. Now, in 2025, it is fair to say that we value our families.

  141. It is also fair to say we don't value them anywhere near

  142. as much as they valued them in the ancient Near East

  143. in the time of Abraham.

  144. Okay, so to wrap our minds around this,

  145. we have to think about what it would mean for God to come to us

  146. and call us to leave behind all the identity

  147. and the things that we cling to for security and meaning.

  148. It would be like God coming to you and saying,

  149. go, quit your job, abandon your career,

  150. shut down all your social media accounts,

  151. throw away your phone forever.

  152. Move cities, move countries, start over.

  153. That's how radical this command is to Abram, right?

  154. If he's leaving his father's house,

  155. he's not gonna be able to email them.

  156. He's not gonna be able to put a stamp on his letter

  157. to Tara's house and send it back, right?

  158. He's not gonna be able to call them.

  159. No, Abraham is being called to leave everything.

  160. And as we read in Hebrews chapter 11 this morning,

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  161. God doesn't even tell him where he's going.

  162. Just says go.

  163. Brothers and sisters, the point is this.

  164. If we obey God's call

  165. to follow him in his mission,

  166. we will give things up.

  167. If we obey God's call to follow him in his mission,

  168. we will give things up.

  169. Now, in the context of this passage,

  170. it is God's call specifically

  171. that Abram and his family would be a blessing to the nations.

  172. That's what we see in verse three.

  173. In New Testament terms,

  174. we would think of the great commission

  175. which Jesus gives to his disciples in Matthew chapter 28.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  176. Go, make disciples of all nations,

  177. baptizing them in the name of the Father,

  178. the Son, and the Holy Spirit,

  179. teaching them everything I've commanded.

  180. This loss looks very practical.

  181. While I was gone,

  182. you all paid off our building debt.

  183. What did we have to do to pay off that debt?

  184. You had to lose money.

  185. Right?

  186. You gave money to our generosity initiative.

  187. You could have done something else with that.

  188. There are things you didn't do

  189. because you gave to that, right?

  190. There are experiences that you didn't have.

  191. Maybe trips,

  192. maybe the security of having more savings.

  193. And you lost all that.

  194. So that we as a church

  195. could follow God and his call

  196. for us to be a gospel hub here

  197. in Southwest Colorado Springs.

  198. That's just one example.

  199. That's one example from us here

  200. in this community in this period of time.

  201. Following God and his call

  202. to follow him and his mission

  203. means we will lose.

  204. Now I hope you see the flip side.

  205. I hope you also see what we've gained.

  206. I hope you see what God is doing

  207. in this congregation

  208. as we continue to follow him more and more.

  209. I hope you see the way he's multiplying

  210. the ministry of this church.

  211. But what did we have to do?

  212. We had to lose.

  213. And it's not just about finances, of course.

  214. There's a pastor here in town

  215. who likes to say,

  216. you know, people are scared of the church

  217. because they think the church

  218. is after their money.

  219. And then he goes on to say,

  220. you know what?

  221. It's actually much worse than that.

  222. We're not just after your money.

  223. We're after everything.

  224. We're after all of you, right?

  225. Jesus calls our whole selves to follow him.

  226. And so we can think of it

  227. not just in sense of following God's call

  228. specifically obeying him in his mission.

  229. We can think of it as the call

  230. that he's given us to holiness.

  231. A number of years ago,

  232. a friend of mine dated a young woman

  233. who had been living in France.

  234. She's a Christian.

  235. She was living in France

  236. with a man that she was engaged to,

  237. not married to,

  238. who was not a Christian.

  239. And one day she woke up

  240. and realized,

  241. should not be living with someone

  242. I'm not married to,

  243. should not be engaged to someone

  244. who's not a Christian,

  245. who doesn't share my faith.

  246. What did she do?

  247. She broke up with him.

  248. She moved out.

  249. She left France

  250. and she moved to the United States.

  251. That, brothers and sisters,

  252. is a loss.

  253. Following God's call

  254. always involves loss.

  255. Could be big.

  256. It could be small.

  257. It could be giving up

  258. your Sunday evening

  259. to talk to college students

  260. about God's word.

  261. It could be leaving a relationship

  262. and a country

  263. because you're convicted

  264. about what God's call

  265. to obedience

  266. means for you.

  267. Question for us

  268. is this.

  269. Are you willing

  270. to give up a lot

  271. to follow God?

  272. Are you willing

  273. to lose

  274. in order

  275. to obey

  276. God?

  277. To answer that question,

  278. we have to answer

  279. another question first,

  280. which is this.

  281. Why?

  282. Why?

  283. Why is it worth

  284. losing?

  285. Why is it worth

  286. giving

  287. anything

  288. up?

  289. Is it actually

  290. a smart

  291. exchange?

  292. And I'm going

  293. to give you

  294. two reasons

  295. this morning

  296. why it is worth

  297. losing

  298. to follow God.

  299. Reason one,

  300. giving it up

  301. is the only way

  302. you keep it.

  303. Reason two,

  304. giving it up

  305. gets you

  306. something better.

  307. giving it up

  308. is the only way

  309. to keep it.

  310. Giving it up

  311. gives you

  312. something better.

  313. First of all,

  314. giving it up

  315. is the only way

  316. that you keep it.

  317. There is a core

  318. foundational principle

  319. to the way

  320. that we think

  321. in the world

  322. as Christians

  323. and you'll find it

  324. on page seven

  325. of your worship guide

  326. in that sidebar

  327. on the left.

  328. In the created world,

  329. you can only

  330. truly enjoy

  331. what you do

  332. not worship.

  333. In the created world,

  334. you can only

  335. truly enjoy

  336. what you do

  337. not worship.

  338. Now,

  339. if the language

  340. of worship

  341. feels abstract

  342. to you,

  343. then you can think

  344. of it in these terms.

  345. What is the object

  346. of your hope?

  347. What is it

  348. that you hope

  349. in?

  350. The beautiful

  351. things of this

  352. world

  353. cannot bear up

  354. under the weight

  355. of your hope.

  356. If you place

  357. your hope

  358. in them,

  359. you will crush

  360. them

  361. and they

  362. will crush

  363. you.

  364. you can only

  365. truly enjoy

  366. what you do

  367. not worship.

  368. There are many

  369. beautiful things

  370. in this world

  371. and they

  372. only work

  373. when they

  374. are downstream

  375. of our love

  376. for and our

  377. commitment

  378. to God.

  379. You can think

  380. about this

  381. in a variety

  382. of areas.

  383. If you're a parent,

  384. your hope

  385. cannot

  386. be in your

  387. kids.

  388. Your kids

  389. actually can't

  390. bear up

  391. under the

  392. weight

  393. of that.

  394. What's going

  395. to happen

  396. if you do

  397. that is

  398. you're going

  399. to be driven

  400. by anxiety,

  401. putting pressure

  402. that they

  403. can't handle

  404. onto them

  405. and you'll

  406. see the

  407. whole situation

  408. become twisted

  409. and marred.

  410. You can't

  411. actually enjoy

  412. them and raise

  413. them unless

  414. your hope

  415. is in something

  416. more and

  417. greater,

  418. unless your

  419. hope is in

  420. God.

  421. We can come

  422. up with a

  423. number of

  424. other examples.

  425. You'll find

  426. this on the

  427. back of

  428. your worship

  429. guide,

  430. a quote

  431. from David

  432. Foster Wallace

  433. who tells

  434. us the

  435. danger of

  436. worshiping

  437. all these

  438. other things,

  439. of putting

  440. our hope

  441. in things

  442. that cannot

  443. bear up

  444. under hope's

  445. weight.

  446. If you

  447. worship money

  448. and things,

  449. then you

  450. will never

  451. have enough.

  452. Worship

  453. your own

  454. body and

  455. beauty and

  456. sexual allure

  457. and you will

  458. always feel

  459. ugly.

  460. and when

  461. time and

  462. age start

  463. showing,

  464. you will

  465. die a

  466. million deaths

  467. before they

  468. finally plant

  469. you.

  470. Worship

  471. power.

  472. You will

  473. feel weak

  474. and afraid

  475. and you

  476. will need

  477. ever more

  478. power over

  479. others to

  480. keep the

  481. fear at

  482. bay.

  483. Worship

  484. your intellect.

  485. Being seen

  486. as smart,

  487. you will

  488. end up

  489. feeling stupid,

  490. a fraud,

  491. always on

  492. the verge

  493. of being

  494. found out.

  495. In the

  496. created

  497. world,

  498. you can

  499. only truly

  500. enjoy

  501. what you

  502. do

  503. not

  504. worship.

  505. Jesus

  506. tells us

  507. the same

  508. thing,

  509. Matthew

    Matthew 10 chapter mention

  510. chapter

  511. 10.

  512. Whoever

  513. loves

  514. father or

  515. mother more

  516. than me is

  517. not worthy

  518. of me,

  519. and whoever

  520. loves son or

  521. daughter more

  522. than me is

  523. not worthy

  524. of me,

  525. and whoever

  526. does not

  527. take his

  528. cross and

  529. follow me is

  530. not worthy

  531. of me.

  532. Whoever

  533. finds his

  534. life will

  535. lose it,

  536. and whoever

  537. loses his

  538. life for my

  539. sake will

  540. find it.

  541. Whoever

  542. finds his

  543. life will

  544. lose it,

  545. and whoever

  546. loses his

  547. life for my

  548. sake will

  549. find it.

  550. Giving it

  551. up is the

  552. only way

  553. you will

  554. keep it.

  555. Second

  556. reason I

  557. told you is

  558. giving it

  559. up because

  560. you will

  561. get something

  562. better.

  563. And this

  564. gets to

  565. answers the

  566. question,

  567. why is it

  568. that Abraham

  569. is willing

  570. to just

  571. go?

  572. Verse 4.

  573. So Abraham

  574. went.

  575. Doesn't know

  576. where he's

  577. going.

  578. Is told he's

  579. supposed to

  580. abandon

  581. everything else.

  582. So there's

  583. this radical

  584. act of

  585. obedience,

  586. which in

  587. many ways

  588. seems

  589. unexplainable,

  590. except the

  591. author of the

  592. book of

  593. Hebrews explains

  594. it for us.

  595. Brit read

  596. this for us

  597. this morning.

  598. You'll find

  599. it on page

  600. 3 of your

  601. worship guide.

  602. Verse 10.

  603. For he was

  604. looking forward

  605. to the city

  606. that has

  607. foundations,

  608. whose designer

  609. and builder

  610. is God.

  611. Abraham went

  612. because he was

  613. looking to

  614. something

  615. better.

  616. And it

  617. says it

  618. again at

  619. the end

  620. of that

  621. passage.

  622. Verse 16.

  623. But as it

  624. is, they

  625. desire a

  626. better country

  627. that is

  628. a heavenly

  629. one.

  630. Therefore,

  631. God is not

  632. ashamed to

  633. be called

  634. their God,

  635. for he has

  636. prepared for

  637. them a

  638. city.

  639. Abraham is

  640. willing to

  641. leave one

  642. place,

  643. because he

  644. is looking

  645. to a

  646. better

  647. place.

  648. Brothers and

  649. sisters, the

  650. same is

  651. true for

  652. us.

  653. We will

  654. not be

  655. willing to

  656. lose

  657. unless we

  658. have a

  659. vision of

  660. something

  661. better.

  662. It's not a

  663. coincidence

  664. that right

  665. after Brit

  666. read that,

  667. we sang the

  668. song,

  669. O Jerusalem.

  670. that is a

  671. song about

  672. us as a

  673. Christian

  674. community

  675. looking towards

  676. and longing

  677. for something

  678. better and

  679. more beautiful.

  680. And what is

  681. it?

  682. We're looking

  683. that they have

  684. told us of a

  685. city where

  686. all tears are

  687. wiped away.

  688. Is that worth

  689. losing for?

  690. Yes.

  691. And every

  692. shadowed valley

  693. is washed

  694. in the

  695. endless day.

  696. Last verse.

  697. They have

  698. told us of

  699. a city where

  700. all death

  701. will be

  702. undone.

  703. Is that

  704. better than

  705. the current

  706. place we're

  707. in right

  708. now?

  709. Yes.

  710. Is it

  711. worth losing

  712. right now

  713. for a city

  714. where death

  715. will be

  716. undone?

  717. Of course.

  718. and all

  719. our tearful

  720. mourning

  721. gives way

  722. to healing

  723. song.

  724. I hope

  725. when you

  726. come and

  727. as you

  728. come to

  729. our church

  730. on Sunday

  731. morning you

  732. realize we

  733. are not

  734. here simply

  735. to go

  736. through the

  737. motions and

  738. do church

  739. and be at

  740. another

  741. worship service.

  742. We're not

  743. singing random

  744. songs that we

  745. pulled together

  746. because churches

  747. are supposed

  748. to sing.

  749. No,

  750. we are coming

  751. here together

  752. to be reminded

  753. of what is

  754. most true

  755. and most

  756. real.

  757. And we're

  758. here to stir

  759. up our hearts

  760. as we repeat

  761. the truth to

  762. ourselves and

  763. one another

  764. about what is

  765. more true

  766. than anything

  767. else.

  768. That God

  769. has prepared

  770. a city

  771. and it is

  772. better than

  773. anything that

  774. you would

  775. give up

  776. here and

  777. now.

  778. Jesus tells

  779. us,

  780. John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  781. 14,

  782. in my

  783. father's

  784. house are

  785. many

  786. rooms.

  787. If it

  788. were not

  789. so,

  790. would I

  791. have told

  792. you that

  793. I go to

  794. prepare a

  795. place for

  796. you?

  797. Christian,

  798. Jesus is

  799. preparing a

  800. place for

  801. you and it

  802. is worth

  803. giving up

  804. everything

  805. for.

  806. How do I

  807. know that's

  808. true?

  809. How do I

  810. know that we

  811. can trust

  812. Jesus'

  813. words?

  814. We trust

  815. Jesus'

  816. words because

  817. of his

  818. death and

  819. his

  820. resurrection.

  821. The

  822. apostle Paul

  823. calls Jesus'

  824. death and

  825. resurrection the

  826. down payment

  827. on the

  828. future.

  829. That Jesus

  830. has put down

  831. the earnest

  832. money to

  833. show that

  834. he's

  835. serious.

  836. Right?

  837. He has not

  838. just given

  839. us words,

  840. he's given

  841. us himself.

  842. Are those

  843. rooms your

  844. line of

  845. sight?

  846. Is heaven

  847. your horizon

  848. line?

  849. if you

  850. are going

  851. to live

  852. the

  853. Christian

  854. life,

  855. at some

  856. point,

  857. it must

  858. be.

  859. We come

  860. together here

  861. on Sunday

  862. mornings,

  863. week after

  864. week,

  865. to reset

  866. and reorient

  867. where our

  868. eyes are

  869. looking.

  870. What is

  871. the future

  872. that we're

  873. hoping for?

  874. What is

  875. the object

  876. that can

  877. bear up

  878. under the

  879. weight of

  880. our hope?

  881. It's that

  882. vision,

  883. that truth,

  884. that reality

  885. that helps

  886. us understand

  887. what is of

  888. greater

  889. importance

  890. and what is

  891. of lesser

  892. importance.

  893. In her

  894. book,

  895. Tunnel

  896. 29,

  897. Helena

  898. Merriman

  899. tells the

  900. story of

  901. Joachim

  902. Rudolph.

  903. And Joachim

  904. decided in

  905. the summer

  906. of 1962

  907. that he

  908. was going

  909. to dig

  910. a tunnel

  911. from West

  912. Berlin to

  913. East Berlin.

  914. This is during

  915. the Cold

  916. War.

  917. He wants

  918. to help

  919. people escape

  920. from being

  921. under

  922. communism.

  923. And so,

  924. of course,

  925. during the

  926. Cold War,

  927. the Berlin

  928. Wall is

  929. keeping East

  930. Berlin.

  931. Where they

  932. are,

  933. they cannot

  934. escape,

  935. they can't

  936. move to

  937. where there's

  938. freedom,

  939. they can't

  940. escape

  941. communism.

  942. And so,

  943. he works

  944. all summer

  945. for this

  946. tunnel,

  947. and he

  948. eventually

  949. finishes it.

  950. And as he

  951. finishes it,

  952. he encounters

  953. one almost

  954. insurmountable

  955. problem.

  956. There are

  957. no telephone

  958. lines between

  959. West Berlin

  960. and East

  961. Berlin.

  962. And without

  963. any telephone

  964. lines,

  965. there is very

  966. challenging for

  967. him to actually

  968. tell people

  969. in East Berlin

  970. where and when

  971. they're going

  972. to escape.

  973. The only

  974. way to do

  975. it is to

  976. send someone

  977. across.

  978. And this is

  979. possible.

  980. West Berliners

  981. are allowed to

  982. cross over

  983. into East

  984. Berlin.

  985. It's just

  986. East Berliners

  987. can't go

  988. into the

  989. West.

  990. But no

  991. West Berliner

  992. wants to

  993. do it

  994. because the

  995. communists have

  996. realized,

  997. hey, we're

  998. actually not

  999. going to

  1000. punish the

  1001. East Berliners

  1002. trying to

  1003. escape that

  1004. harshly.

  1005. You know who

  1006. we're really

  1007. going to

  1008. punish?

  1009. We're going

  1010. to punish

  1011. the West

  1012. Berliners who

  1013. are organizing

  1014. the escapes.

  1015. We're not

  1016. going to go

  1017. after the

  1018. sheep.

  1019. We're going

  1020. to go

  1021. after the

  1022. shepherds.

  1023. And so it

  1024. gets to a

  1025. point where

  1026. it's almost

  1027. a death

  1028. sentence to

  1029. cross over

  1030. because what

  1031. happens if

  1032. you're caught?

  1033. If you are

  1034. caught, your

  1035. life is

  1036. essentially

  1037. over.

  1038. The communists

  1039. reserve their

  1040. cruelest punishments

  1041. for West

  1042. Berliners who

  1043. help East

  1044. Berliners escape.

  1045. And so they've

  1046. dug this

  1047. tunnel.

  1048. no one is

  1049. willing to

  1050. go over and

  1051. tell the

  1052. East Berliners

  1053. the details

  1054. except for

  1055. one person.

  1056. Just as they

  1057. are giving up

  1058. hope, they

  1059. find someone,

  1060. someone who

  1061. will do it

  1062. for the most

  1063. primal reason

  1064. of all.

  1065. they find a

  1066. man named

  1067. Wolf Dieter

  1068. Sternheimer.

  1069. What makes

  1070. Wolf Dieter

  1071. different than

  1072. every other

  1073. West Berliner?

  1074. Wolf Dieter's

  1075. girlfriend is

  1076. in East

  1077. Berlin.

  1078. And they go

  1079. to him and

  1080. they say,

  1081. look, we

  1082. have a tunnel

  1083. and you know

  1084. what?

  1085. We'll let your

  1086. girlfriend come

  1087. over to West

  1088. Berlin if you

  1089. go to East

  1090. Berlin and tell

  1091. everyone.

  1092. the book

  1093. says this,

  1094. Wolf Dieter

  1095. didn't need

  1096. long to

  1097. decide.

  1098. He knew

  1099. this was the

  1100. only way

  1101. to get

  1102. his girlfriend

  1103. out.

  1104. Brothers and

  1105. sisters,

  1106. plenty of

  1107. people in

  1108. West Berlin

  1109. had the

  1110. right world

  1111. view.

  1112. Plenty of

  1113. people in

  1114. West Berlin

  1115. understood

  1116. intellectually

  1117. the evils

  1118. of communism.

  1119. Right?

  1120. The understanding

  1121. wasn't enough.

  1122. They did

  1123. not have

  1124. a strong

  1125. enough vision

  1126. of the

  1127. future to

  1128. risk

  1129. everything.

  1130. Wolf Dieter

  1131. did.

  1132. Many people

  1133. were willing

  1134. to dig a

  1135. tunnel from

  1136. the West

  1137. where it

  1138. was safe.

  1139. Only one

  1140. man was able

  1141. to cross over

  1142. to the East

  1143. where it

  1144. was not

  1145. safe.

  1146. Why?

  1147. Because he

  1148. had a love

  1149. and a longing

  1150. and he

  1151. saw

  1152. something

  1153. better.

  1154. And he

  1155. was willing

  1156. to risk

  1157. everything.

  1158. By the

  1159. way,

  1160. he and

  1161. Renata

  1162. get married

  1163. and have

  1164. two kids.

  1165. Same is

  1166. true of

  1167. Abraham.

  1168. Same is

  1169. true of

  1170. us.

  1171. For he

  1172. was looking

  1173. forward to

  1174. the city

  1175. that has

  1176. foundations

  1177. whose

  1178. designer

  1179. and builder

  1180. is God.

  1181. Let's

  1182. pray.

  1183. Our

  1184. Father in

  1185. heaven,

  1186. we praise

  1187. you and

  1188. thank you

  1189. that you

  1190. have

  1191. prepared a

  1192. city where

  1193. all death

  1194. will be

  1195. undone.

  1196. We ask

  1197. that you

  1198. would remind

  1199. us of that

  1200. truth,

  1201. that it

  1202. would become

  1203. our horizon

  1204. line,

  1205. that we

  1206. would look

  1207. forward to

  1208. it and we

  1209. would be

  1210. willing to

  1211. do what

  1212. it takes

  1213. to be

  1214. there.

  1215. We thank

  1216. you that

  1217. Jesus has

  1218. given himself,

  1219. that he's

  1220. died for our

  1221. sins and

  1222. risen from

  1223. the dead,

  1224. that we

  1225. know that

  1226. we can

  1227. trust in

  1228. the future

  1229. you have

  1230. for us.

  1231. We ask

  1232. all of

  1233. these things

  1234. in the

  1235. mighty name

  1236. of Jesus

  1237. Christ.

  1238. Amen.

  1239. I invite

  1240. you to

  1241. stand for

  1242. our closing

  1243. hymn.
