  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. ! And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here.

  7. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  8. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  9. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  10. They don't need God's grace.

  11. And no one so bad that they can't have it.

  12. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  13. We're continuing this morning our series in the book of Genesis on the story of Abraham.

  14. Genesis tells the origin story of Israel, God's people, which begins with Abraham.

  15. And that's our focus.

  16. We're not doing the entire book, but instead looking just at chapters 11 through 25.

  17. And the reason for that, as I've been telling you, is to prepare us to go back to our series on Romans.

  18. Because when we return to Romans chapter 4, Paul will be telling us about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  19. It's also a great chance for us to ask the question,

  20. what does it look like for us to follow God in faith?

  21. This week and next week, we are going to see two different threats to faith.

  22. This week, it's going to be the threat of pragmatism and fear.

  23. And next week, it's the threat of comfort and wealth.

  24. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me in God's word to Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  25. You can turn in your worship guide.

  26. You can turn on your phone.

  27. You can turn in your Bible.

  28. No matter where you turn, Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  29. He's a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  30. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 12, starting at verse 10.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  31. Now there was a famine in the land.

  32. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.

  33. When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai, his wife,

  34. I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance.

  35. And when the Egyptians see you, they will say, this is his wife.

  36. Then they will kill me, but they will let you live.

  37. Verse 13.

  38. Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you,

  39. and that my life may be spared for your sake.

  40. When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.

  41. And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh.

  42. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.

  43. And for her sake, he dealt well with Abram.

  44. And he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.

  45. Verse 17.

  46. But the Lord afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

  47. So Pharaoh called Abram and said,

  48. What is this you have done to me?

  49. Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?

  50. Why did you say, she is my sister?

  51. So that I took her for my wife.

  52. Now then, here is your wife.

  53. Take her and go.

  54. And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him,

  55. and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

  56. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  57. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and we thank you again this morning that you have given us your word.

  58. That you speak to us in ways that we can understand.

  59. And we ask that you would do that again this morning.

  60. That you would use this passage in a powerful way in this community and in our lives.

  61. You would use it to grow our knowledge of you.

  62. You'd use it to increase our love for you.

  63. Most of all, you would use it to show us Jesus.

  64. That we would love him and serve him more and more.

  65. And we ask these things in his mighty name.

  66. Amen.

  67. For my first three years after college, I lived in Williamsburg, Virginia.

  68. And among its many claims to fame,

  69. well, one of Williamsburg's features is that it has Busch Gardens, the amusement park.

  70. And so as locals, the popular thing to do would be to buy an annual pass.

  71. And then what we would do is we would go in the evenings just for a couple hours to skip the crowds.

  72. And so we would laugh at all the tourists who had to come,

  73. pay an overpriced fee for one day,

  74. and have to fit everything in to however many hours they were there.

  75. And so we kind of pat ourselves on the back, right?

  76. We could show up whenever we wanted, ride a few rides,

  77. go back home, it would be there for us tomorrow.

  78. Now, if you're familiar with amusement parks,

  79. you know that there are two kinds of people in this world.

  80. There are people that love roller coasters,

  81. and there are people that hate roller coasters.

  82. And the Capone family is on the team hate roller coasters.

  83. I will say I'm a slight exception.

  84. I am willing to tolerate them.

  85. So I can ride a roller coaster maybe two at max three times in a day,

  86. and then I'm done.

  87. But I knew people who would go, and they would just ride them all day.

  88. Now, I think, how can your body, like, manage this?

  89. But for whatever reason, it had its attraction.

  90. Now, there's another ride at Busch Gardens called the Mock Tower,

  91. and it is what it sounds like.

  92. It was a drop tower, which is a tower, and it was 23 stories high.

  93. And what you would do is you would get strapped into this gondola,

  94. and you would slowly ride up the tower, all 23 stories.

  95. You'd get to look out the great views of Virginia,

  96. and then suddenly you would get sent into a complete free fall.

  97. You ride up slowly, and then you go down quickly,

  98. and you get to experience dropping 23 stories,

  99. which I know is the desire of many of your hearts.

  100. I bring up the drop tower because it helps us understand what's happening in this story,

  101. and it really captures where we're at in Genesis right now.

  102. Last couple weeks, we've had this slow ascent with beautiful views

  103. of how wonderful Abraham and his faith are.

  104. God tells him to go.

  105. He doesn't tell him where, and what does Abraham do?

  106. He goes.

  107. Hebrews chapter 11 presents him as this great model and example of faith.

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  108. Look at Abraham, who risked more than any of us ever will.

  109. We have these amazing promises that we talked about last week,

  110. this beautiful vision of how Abraham's going to be a blessing to the nations,

  111. and we see him as he travels around the promised land.

  112. He's setting up these altars and worshiping God.

  113. I mean, how could it get any better?

  114. Abraham, what a great example.

  115. And then verse 10.

  116. Suddenly, in one verse, the cord is pulled.

  117. The beautiful vision is over.

  118. The gondola begins to drop in free fall back to earth.

  119. Abraham is still a man.

  120. He's sinful.

  121. He's fearful.

  122. He's flawed.

  123. And he still lives in a world wrecked by sin.

  124. And so that takes us right here, the beginning, verse 10.

  125. Yes, God has promised blessing,

  126. and it's not all going to happen right now.

  127. Now there was a famine in the land.

  128. Yes, God has given this beautiful vision.

  129. Abraham still lives in a world filled with famines.

  130. Same is true of our lives today, right?

  131. Great promises.

  132. Great realism.

  133. You may have these great moments in your marriage, right,

  134. where you have come together with just clarity and inspiration,

  135. and the two of you are focused on God and his kingdom,

  136. and you're excited about what the future holds.

  137. And then in the next moment, you have a fight

  138. because your spouse has jumped to conclusions about something you said

  139. and didn't believe the best of you.

  140. Maybe you have a vision of how you're going to use your resources for good

  141. and bless the community around you,

  142. and you're filled with excitement about it,

  143. and then the stock market drops,

  144. and you have nowhere near the wealth you thought you did.

  145. Maybe you've developed the gifts that God has given you,

  146. and you have work that has power and purpose and inspiration to it,

  147. and then the next day you get laid off or you're fired.

  148. Verse 10 reminds us,

  149. as we look at God's great promises and the future that is before us,

  150. we do still live east of Eden.

  151. We do still live in a world wrecked by sin.

  152. Now, it's not just the circumstances that come crashing down.

  153. What happens here also reveals the cracks in Abraham's character.

  154. Remember, we've seen him.

  155. He has this great faith.

  156. He takes God at his word.

  157. He leaves everything behind,

  158. and then, very quickly,

  159. the next story,

  160. not so great faith.

  161. Instead, what he has for us is fear and anxiety.

  162. He's entering the land of Egypt because of this famine.

  163. In verse 13, right away,

  164. he decides he's going to cook up a lie.

  165. Say that you are my sister,

  166. that it may go well with me because of you.

  167. And it's not just that he's lying.

  168. He's lying because he's afraid.

  169. We see there in verses 11 and 12,

  170. I know that you are a beautiful woman.

  171. When they see you,

  172. they're going to kill me.

  173. So let's tell a lie.

  174. We're going to tell a lie

  175. because I'm afraid of what happens if I don't.

  176. And even worse than that,

  177. we're going to tell a lie,

  178. verse 13,

  179. because I'm selfish.

  180. That my life may be spared for your sake,

  181. which is what every wife longs for her husband to say to her.

  182. No, he's doing the exact opposite of what he should be, right?

  183. He should be putting himself to protect Sarai.

  184. Instead, Sarai is being used as a shield to protect him.

  185. Problem is this.

  186. Genesis chapter 12, verse 2,

    Genesis 12:2

  187. God made a promise.

  188. And God's promise to Abraham was this,

  189. I will make of you a great nation.

  190. If Abraham gets killed, which is his fear,

  191. there will be no great nation.

  192. Abraham doesn't believe that God will do what he said he's going to do.

  193. Abraham doesn't believe that God is powerful enough

  194. to actually keep his word without a little help.

  195. If I don't lie, this is the thinking,

  196. God's plan will be thwarted.

  197. And so he takes matters into his own hands.

  198. The irony here is that as he takes matters into his own hands,

  199. he's incredibly foolish.

  200. This is not even a great plan.

  201. It's not just that for God's promise to come true,

  202. Abraham has to keep living.

  203. Sarai also has to keep moving.

  204. And so he puts her at risk even as he saves himself.

  205. For the promise to be fulfilled,

  206. actually both of them have to make it out of Egypt intact.

  207. And yet in Abraham's world,

  208. the means justifies the ends.

  209. His fear gets in the way of his faith.

  210. One man puts it this way,

  211. pragmatism is the opposite of faith.

  212. And pragmatism is the opposite of faith

  213. because it doesn't leave room for God's supernatural power

  214. to be at work in the world.

  215. And so it decides not to follow first principles

  216. to trust that God will protect and honor.

  217. The great Presbyterian minister Francis Schaeffer,

  218. who lived in the 20th century,

  219. preached a sermon called God's Work in God's Ways,

  220. which is exactly what it sounds like.

  221. That if we're going to follow God in his mission,

  222. we don't get to make it up as we go along.

  223. No, it doesn't make sense to follow God

  224. and then operate by our own principles.

  225. It doesn't make sense to say,

  226. God is going to keep his promise

  227. and I have to lie to make it happen.

  228. And in that sermon, he says this,

  229. this is on page seven of your worship guide.

  230. Let us ask ourselves the hard questions.

  231. Do we really believe God exists?

  232. Do we really believe God exists?

  233. And do we really believe God?

  234. If you sacrifice your integrity to keep your job,

  235. you don't believe that God will provide for you.

  236. If we cheat and cut corners,

  237. we do not believe that God has or will give us enough.

  238. If we put our ultimate hope in children and success

  239. and wealth and pleasure and comfort,

  240. then we do not believe what we sang earlier today,

  241. in his glory is my good.

  242. First Samuel chapter two says this,

  243. it's from God who's making this statement.

  244. Those who honor me, I will honor

  245. and those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

  246. Those who honor me, I will honor.

  247. Good words here for Abraham to remember.

  248. Good words for us as well.

  249. Of course, it reminds us,

  250. this passage of the story that men of great faith,

  251. women of great faith are still works in progress.

  252. still tempted by fear,

  253. still find it challenging,

  254. but to believe that God will do what he's promised.

  255. And so that's why we sing things like

  256. what we sang this morning.

  257. A mighty fortress is our God.

  258. Did we in our own strength confide,

  259. our striving would be losing.

  260. We're not the right man on our side,

  261. the man of God's own choosing.

  262. Christian,

  263. do you believe the right man is on your side?

  264. If you do,

  265. you can follow God and his word no matter the risk.

  266. Thankfully,

  267. this story,

  268. as it shows us Abraham's failure,

  269. is also,

  270. and even more,

  271. dripping with God's grace.

  272. Because despite Abraham's sin

  273. and failure

  274. and unbelief,

  275. God is still

  276. faithful.

  277. despite Abraham's failure,

  278. God keeps

  279. his promises.

  280. I mentioned already

  281. God's promise

  282. in verse 2 of chapter 12

  283. that he is going to make

  284. Abraham a great

  285. nation.

  286. I'm sorry,

  287. verse 3.

  288. But that's not the only promise

  289. that shows up in verse 3.

  290. He also says this,

  291. Him who dishonors you

  292. I will curse,

  293. and in you

  294. all the families

  295. of the earth

  296. shall be blessed.

  297. What happens to Pharaoh?

  298. Verse 17,

  299. God keeps

  300. his promise

  301. to curse.

  302. The Lord afflicted

  303. Pharaoh and his house

  304. with great plagues

  305. because of Sarai,

  306. Abram's wife.

  307. So God provides

  308. a way up.

  309. He curses

  310. those

  311. who dishonor

  312. Abram.

  313. And he does it

  314. despite

  315. Abram's failure

  316. and sin

  317. and fear.

  318. Abram foolishly thinks

  319. he needs to protect himself.

  320. He thinks

  321. he's smart enough.

  322. What we see here

  323. is only God

  324. is powerful enough.

  325. As Abram

  326. puts together

  327. this silly plan

  328. to save his skin,

  329. it's actually God

  330. who rescues him

  331. from Egypt.

  332. The point is this.

  333. The nature of God

  334. is that he keeps

  335. his promises

  336. in the middle

  337. of our failures.

  338. The nature of God

  339. is that he keeps

  340. his promises

  341. despite

  342. our failures.

  343. Remember when we were

  344. in the book of Judges,

  345. I told you over and over

  346. about 2 Timothy 2,

    2 Timothy 2:13

  347. verse 13.

  348. If we are faithless,

  349. he remains faithful

  350. for he cannot

  351. deny himself.

  352. Abraham

  353. is faithless.

  354. God

  355. remains

  356. faithful

  357. because he cannot

  358. deny

  359. himself.

  360. What did we sing?

  361. Page 2 of your worship guide.

  362. Great is thy

  363. faithfulness.

  364. O God,

  365. my Father,

  366. there is no

  367. shadow

  368. of turning

  369. with thee.

  370. Abraham

  371. turns,

  372. God

  373. does not.

  374. Keeps his promises

  375. no matter what.

  376. And in that,

  377. there's great

  378. encouragement

  379. and humility

  380. for us.

  381. Encouragement

  382. because God

  383. does not

  384. abandon us

  385. when we

  386. forget him.

  387. God

  388. does not

  389. abandon us

  390. when we

  391. forget

  392. him.

  393. there's also

  394. great humility

  395. because it

  396. reminds us

  397. of what God

  398. tells his

  399. people

  400. all throughout

  401. the Old Testament

  402. which is this.

  403. I didn't

  404. choose you

  405. because you

  406. were anything

  407. special.

  408. I didn't

  409. pick you

  410. because you

  411. were hot

  412. stuff.

  413. No,

  414. I chose

  415. you

  416. because

  417. I chose

  418. you.

  419. don't

  420. pat

  421. yourself

  422. on the

  423. back.

  424. Don't

  425. assume

  426. you're

  427. more

  428. moral

  429. than the

  430. world

  431. around

  432. you.

  433. By the

  434. way,

  435. Pharaoh

  436. in this

  437. story

  438. is more

  439. upright

  440. than

  441. Abraham,

  442. which is a

  443. theme we'll

  444. see again.

  445. The man

  446. who doesn't

  447. believe in

  448. Yahweh,

  449. more faithful

  450. than the

  451. one who

  452. does.

  453. Pagans

  454. look better

  455. than Abraham.

  456. They look

  457. better than

  458. God's

  459. people.

  460. God chose

  461. you because

  462. he chose

  463. you.

  464. It's what

  465. we're told

  466. in Psalm

  467. 103.

  468. As a

  469. father shows

  470. compassion to

  471. his children,

  472. so the

  473. Lord shows

  474. compassion to

  475. those who

  476. fear him.

  477. For he

  478. knows our

  479. frame.

  480. He remembers

  481. that we are

  482. only dust.

  483. Christian,

  484. if you

  485. are

  486. faithless,

  487. God

  488. remains

  489. faithful,

  490. for he

  491. cannot

  492. deny

  493. himself.

  494. And how

  495. do we

  496. know that's

  497. true?

  498. We know

  499. it's true

  500. for a

  501. better and

  502. greater

  503. reason than

  504. Abraham.

  505. We have

  506. more reason

  507. to trust

  508. God than

  509. his people

  510. in the

  511. Old Testament

  512. because we

  513. have seen

  514. and we

  515. know what

  516. they only

  517. looked forward

  518. to,

  519. which is

  520. Jesus and

  521. his death

  522. and his

  523. resurrection.

  524. We have

  525. more reason

  526. to take

  527. God at

  528. his word

  529. because we

  530. have seen

  531. that he

  532. has kept

  533. it in the

  534. most important

  535. way.

  536. He's kept

  537. it in

  538. sending his

  539. son,

  540. his only

  541. son,

  542. to become

  543. a man,

  544. to live

  545. the perfect

  546. life that

  547. we should

  548. have lived,

  549. to die

  550. the death

  551. we should

  552. have died,

  553. and then

  554. he rose

  555. him from

  556. the dead.

  557. And so

  558. because of

  559. that,

  560. we know

  561. that God

  562. is a God

  563. who will

  564. keep his

  565. promises.

  566. We can

  567. follow him,

  568. we can

  569. trust him,

  570. no matter

  571. what.

  572. And so

  573. that's why

  574. we can

  575. sing,

  576. hallelujah,

  577. all I have

  578. is Christ,

  579. hallelujah,

  580. Jesus is

  581. my life.

  582. Let's pray.

  583. Our

  584. Father in

  585. heaven,

  586. we praise

  587. you and

  588. thank you

  589. that our

  590. belonging to

  591. you does

  592. not depend

  593. on us

  594. and our

  595. faithfulness,

  596. but on

  597. you and

  598. your

  599. faithfulness.

  600. We thank

  601. you that

  602. when we are

  603. faithless,

  604. you are

  605. faithful,

  606. for you

  607. cannot deny

  608. yourself.

  609. We ask

  610. that you

  611. remind us

  612. of that

  613. truth,

  614. and it

  615. would lead

  616. us to

  617. love and

  618. follow and

  619. serve and

  620. obey you.

  621. We ask

  622. these things

  623. in Jesus'

  624. name.

  625. Amen.

  626. I invite

  627. you to

  628. stand.

  629. for our

  630. closing

  631. hymn.
