  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  4. This morning, we're continuing our series in the book of Genesis. Genesis is the very first book in the Bible, so it's easy to find.

  5. And it tells the story of the origin of the world and also the origin of Israel, God's people, beginning with Abraham.

  6. We're actually not going to cover the entire book of Genesis. We are just focusing on the story of Abraham in Genesis 11 through 25.

  7. And the reason we're focusing in on that is to prepare us to return to our series in the book of Romans.

  8. We're going to jump back in in the fall in Romans chapter 4, which talks about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  9. So this is all prep right now.

  10. Not only does it prepare us for Romans, Abraham's story also helps us ask the question,

  11. what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  12. Last week, we saw that Abraham and his nephew Lot had to separate.

  13. This is chapter 13.

    Isaiah 13 chapter mention

  14. They had both become so wealthy that the land could not support both of them.

  15. They didn't have enough water, enough grass.

  16. And so they have to go to different pieces of land.

  17. Lot picks first.

  18. And you'll remember he picks the very best piece of land with one exception.

  19. He picks apart a parcel of land right next to Sodom, a place of great sin.

  20. And so we saw Lot is willing to cozy up to wickedness for the sake of comfort.

  21. He gives in to the temptation to put the good life as first and more important than the kingdom.

  22. This week, we're going to see very quickly Lot suffering because of his poor choice.

  23. And so it allows us to see how God responds to his people in their foolishness.

  24. How God responds to his people in their foolishness.

  25. That's with that that I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 14.

    Genesis 14 chapter mention

  26. You can turn in your Bible.

  27. You can turn on your phone.

  28. You can turn in your worship guide.

  29. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  30. Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  31. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  32. And so that's why we read now Genesis 14 starting at verse 1.

  33. Verse 4.

  34. 12 years they had served Chederleomer, but in the 13th year they rebelled.

  35. In the 14th year, Chederleomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaim and Ashtaroth Karnam,

  36. the Zuzim and Ham, the Emim and Shave Kiriathim,

  37. and the Horites and their hill country of Seir as far as El Perrin on the border of the wilderness.

  38. Then they turned back and came to An-Mishpat, that is Kadesh,

  39. and defeated all the country of the Amalekites and also the Amorites who were dwelling in Hazazon Tamar.

  40. Verse 8.

  41. Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Adma, the king of Zebuam,

  42. and the king of Bela, that is Zoar, went out,

  43. and they joined battle in the valley of Siddam with Chederleomer king of Elam,

  44. Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar,

  45. and Ariok king of Elessar, four kings against five.

  46. Now the valley of Siddam was full of bitumen pits,

  47. and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled.

  48. Some fell into them, and the rest fled to the hill country.

  49. So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah

  50. and all their provisions and went their way.

  51. They also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother,

  52. who was dwelling in Sodom, and his possessions, and went their way.

  53. Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew,

  54. who was living by the oaks of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner.

  55. These were allies of Abram.

  56. When Abram heard that his kinsmen had been taken captive,

  57. he led forth his trained men, born in his house, 318 of them,

  58. and he went in pursuit as far as Dan.

  59. And he divided his forces against them by night,

  60. he and his servants, and defeated them,

  61. and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus.

  62. Then he brought back all the possessions,

  63. and also brought back his kinsmen Lot with his possessions,

  64. and the women and the people.

  65. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  66. Our Father in Heaven, we do thank you for your Word

  67. that you've given to us as a great gift,

  68. that we would know and learn how to walk in this world,

  69. and most of all, we would know about your mercy,

  70. and your salvation, and grace in Jesus Christ.

  71. We ask that you would help us,

  72. that you would help us to see, and understand,

  73. and believe in your Word,

  74. that you would use it to grow our love, and affection,

  75. and reverence, and awe, and obedience to Jesus Christ.

  76. And we ask all of these things in his mighty name.

  77. Amen.

  78. In December of 2003,

  79. a man named Nick Berg decided to leave his hometown

  80. of Westchester, Pennsylvania,

  81. which is right outside of Philly,

  82. and he left it for the country of Iraq.

  83. He made this decision.

  84. It had taken Nick a while to figure out

  85. what he wanted to do with his life,

  86. but he settled on starting a company

  87. that would install and repair radio towers.

  88. He decided that was going to be his life's work.

  89. And you may remember,

  90. December of 2003 was right after the fall of Saddam Hussein.

  91. And so he sees this incredible business opportunity.

  92. Guess what?

  93. Their infrastructure's been destroyed,

  94. and I'm going to be the one to come in

  95. and save the day and make all the money.

  96. I'll repair radio towers that have been hurt, injured.

  97. I'll install new ones.

  98. Everything will be great.

  99. Nick's friends and family were appalled,

  100. and they warned him, urged him not to go.

  101. Nick, however, saw only the benefits

  102. and none of the dangers.

  103. And so seeing only benefits,

  104. he separates himself from the land

  105. and the protection of the United States.

  106. Nick Burke's family then is left wondering

  107. what is going to happen to Nick.

  108. That's similar to the situation

  109. we find ourselves here in this passage this morning.

  110. You might see where I'm headed with this.

  111. Lot has separated himself

  112. from the land and the protection of God.

  113. Lot sees all the benefits,

  114. comes to terms with none of the dangers.

  115. Remember, chapter 13,

  116. he and Abraham have to split.

  117. They head in different ways.

  118. He looks out, he sees the Jordan Valley,

  119. and for him it is only beautiful and alluring.

  120. It's this place of wealth and prosperity,

  121. somewhere where he's confident he's going to thrive,

  122. and yet we have the hint of coming tragedy,

  123. not once but twice.

  124. As he's picking it,

  125. remember, we're told,

  126. this was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.

  127. And then in verse 13, it says,

  128. now the men of Sodom were wicked,

  129. great sinners against the Lord.

  130. So like Nick Burke's friends,

  131. the careful listener here is wondering

  132. what is going to happen to Lot.

  133. We know it will not end well.

  134. There's a lot going on in the first,

  135. say, 13 verses, 12 verses,

  136. so I'm just going to summarize it for you very briefly.

  137. In verses 1 through 9,

  138. there is a geopolitical conflict

  139. that involves a lot of kings.

  140. We might even say it's not a geopolitical conflict,

  141. but geopolitical conflicts,

  142. because there's so much going on.

  143. Why do we care about this conflict?

  144. We care, we first find out,

  145. in verse 2 and verse 8,

  146. because Sodom is involved.

  147. And if Sodom is involved,

  148. then Lot is involved.

  149. That helps us understand why,

  150. in the midst of the story of Abraham,

  151. we suddenly are told about these 10 plus kings

  152. who are fighting with each other.

  153. Last week, we were told that Lot moved right next to Sodom.

  154. Did you notice what we find out in verse 12 of this week?

  155. He's not right next to Sodom.

  156. He is dwelling in Sodom.

  157. The danger of him setting up camp so close

  158. to these sinful people is coming true.

  159. So they have the conflict.

  160. Sodom's involved.

  161. Verses 10 and 11,

  162. Sodom is defeated,

  163. which means, verse 12,

  164. there is a lot of collateral damage,

  165. including Lot.

  166. Lot and all of his things are taken.

  167. That is the point of verses 1 through 13.

  168. Big conflict, lots of kings,

  169. Sodom's involved,

  170. because Sodom's involved,

  171. things don't end well for Lot.

  172. Which takes us back to our question,

  173. what does God do with the foolishness of his people?

  174. Lot, this is not an accident.

  175. He's not merely a victim of circumstance.

  176. He has made a foolish choice to move to a sinful place.

  177. Now, I want to note at this point,

  178. Lot is a very complicated figure.

  179. If we just had chapter 13,

  180. you might think,

  181. you know, Lot has no relationship with God.

  182. But actually, the New Testament

  183. only speaks positively of Lot.

  184. 2 Peter chapter 2 tells us he is a righteous man.

    2 Peter 2 chapter mention

  185. It speaks well of Lot

  186. that of all the people who did not go with Abraham,

  187. he actually goes with him, right,

  188. when he leaves his father's land.

  189. And Lot is deeply flawed and wildly foolish.

  190. So what is God going to do?

  191. Especially when Lot's predicament

  192. is because of Lot's decisions.

  193. Well, we find out right away.

  194. Verse 13,

  195. God shows Lot tremendous grace.

  196. And he shows Lot tremendous grace

  197. in the way I mentioned in our confession of faith,

  198. by his providence.

  199. It just so happens that one man escapes.

  200. And this doesn't have to happen,

  201. but not only does that man escape,

  202. he runs and he tells Abraham.

  203. In God's providential care,

  204. Lot's story is not over.

  205. What is God's response

  206. to the foolishness of his people?

  207. His response is one of great grace

  208. and undeserved mercy.

  209. Brothers and sisters,

  210. that is God's response

  211. to our foolishness as well.

  212. Outside of that,

  213. we really don't have much hope.

  214. As we've been looking at Abraham and Lot's story

  215. over the last few weeks,

  216. you might have been thinking,

  217. man, maybe some of my priorities

  218. are out of order.

  219. Maybe there are things

  220. that I have valued above God

  221. and his kingdom and his mission.

  222. Chapter 14 reminds us

  223. there is still so much grace.

  224. God is still protecting

  225. and pursuing his people.

  226. God is still watching out for you.

  227. God is still watching out for you.

  228. God is still watching out for you.

  229. If you belong to him,

  230. God is still watching out for you.

  231. Christian.

  232. In the midst of your foolishness,

  233. our foolishness,

  234. stupidity,

  235. short-sightedness.

  236. And so in Lot's story here,

  237. we see two things.

  238. We see an encouragement

  239. and a warning.

  240. Encouragement, I've already told you.

  241. God shows great grace to his people

  242. even when they are deeply flawed

  243. and sinful.

  244. If you belong to him,

  245. God has not given up on you

  246. no matter where you are.

  247. And if you do not belong to him,

  248. it is not too late.

  249. It's not too late to repent

  250. and follow after him.

  251. That's the encouragement.

  252. Lot also gives us a sober warning.

  253. Yes, Lot's life is saved.

  254. Yes, Lot escapes a future of slavery

  255. and so much is lost.

  256. Lot will not experience

  257. the intimacy and fellowship with God

  258. that Abraham does.

  259. Lot will not be a blessing to the nations

  260. in the way that Abraham will.

  261. And Lot's descendants

  262. are going to suffer

  263. from his unfaithfulness.

  264. As we watch the story

  265. of the Old Testament play out,

  266. there is a tragedy

  267. for those who are born from Lot.

  268. They are going to have

  269. one foot in

  270. and one foot out

  271. of God's people.

  272. They will be half-hearted at best

  273. and apostate at worst.

  274. So there's an encouragement.

  275. God's grace is always there

  276. for his people.

  277. And there's a warning.

  278. Actions have consequences.

  279. There are real things

  280. to be missed

  281. and lost

  282. if we forsake

  283. God's people

  284. and God's land.

  285. Now as people

  286. in the New Testament,

  287. we don't look

  288. to a specific land.

  289. We cling fast

  290. to God's promises

  291. and his protection.

  292. And where are those promises

  293. acted out?

  294. Where does God promise

  295. that his protection

  296. will happen?

  297. It is here

  298. with his people

  299. in his church.

  300. Remember what I told you

  301. last week.

  302. Never

  303. leave the promised land.

  304. I tell you the same thing

  305. this week

  306. but in a different way.

  307. Never

  308. leave

  309. God's

  310. people.

  311. No matter how good

  312. it looks

  313. over there.

  314. Cling

  315. to his church.

  316. Cling

  317. to his word.

  318. I've been telling you

  319. the last number

  320. of weeks

  321. about this quote

  322. from David Gibson

  323. where he says,

  324. hey,

  325. we can't enjoy

  326. created things

  327. that we worship.

  328. The only way

  329. to enjoy them

  330. is to worship God.

  331. C.S. Lewis

  332. puts it a different way.

  333. This is on page 7

  334. of your worship guide.

  335. Put first things

  336. first

  337. and we get

  338. second things

  339. thrown in.

  340. Put second things

  341. first

  342. and we lose

  343. both first

  344. and second

  345. things.

  346. What does Lot

  347. do here

  348. in chapters 13

  349. and 14

  350. but put

  351. second things

  352. first?

  353. The good land

  354. is more important

  355. to him

  356. than anything else.

  357. What does he end up

  358. losing?

  359. Chapter 19,

  360. he doesn't have

  361. any good land.

  362. Put first things

  363. first

  364. and we get

  365. second things

  366. thrown in.

  367. Now we left off

  368. here in our story

  369. on verse 13.

  370. That's not going

  371. to finish it though.

  372. Abraham needs

  373. more than

  374. a messenger.

  375. We see in the messenger

  376. God's grace

  377. to his people,

  378. his grace

  379. to Lot.

  380. we're also going

  381. to need God's grace

  382. through

  383. his people.

  384. 13,

  385. we meet Abraham.

  386. He is sitting

  387. with his connections,

  388. his allies.

  389. We find out

  390. Abraham is in fact

  391. not a loner.

  392. He's been making

  393. connections

  394. and shaking hands.

  395. He's been getting

  396. on the ancient

  397. Near Eastern

  398. linked in

  399. and friending people.

  400. He's been attending

  401. the desert block

  402. parties.

  403. You know,

  404. if you have something

  405. wrong with your cart,

  406. he has a torque wrench,

  407. he'll help you

  408. put the wheel

  409. back on.

  410. And with all that,

  411. that's when he

  412. receives the news,

  413. right?

  414. He is there,

  415. he's connected.

  416. It's not just

  417. that he has allies

  418. though,

  419. 14.

  420. He in fact

  421. has 318

  422. of his own men,

  423. trained men,

  424. which I'm guessing,

  425. you know,

  426. most of you all

  427. when you think

  428. about your trained men,

  429. doesn't reach

  430. the number

  431. of 318.

  432. Abraham's really

  433. wealthy.

  434. He's wealthy,

  435. that's why

  436. they had to separate.

  437. He's not just wealthy,

  438. verse 15,

  439. he comes up

  440. with a creative plan.

  441. Look,

  442. we're going to split

  443. into two forces

  444. and pursue them

  445. to the north.

  446. We're going to

  447. attack at night.

  448. So Abraham's not

  449. just been making

  450. connections,

  451. Abraham knows

  452. what he's doing.

  453. He is not a newcomer

  454. here to ancient

  455. Near Eastern warfare.

  456. Then,

  457. verse 15,

  458. he gives up

  459. his time.

  460. He's going

  461. to pursue them,

  462. we're told,

  463. Hobah north of Damascus,

  464. which is 125 miles

  465. north of where

  466. Abraham is currently.

  467. So Abraham loses

  468. at least a weekend,

  469. right?

  470. He might even have

  471. missed a big game

  472. to go and rescue Lot.

  473. Abraham gives up

  474. his resources,

  475. he uses his creativity,

  476. he sacrifices his time,

  477. and he takes

  478. bold and risky action

  479. for his stupid nephew.

  480. And he does

  481. all of those things

  482. because he believes

  483. God's promises.

  484. Remember the end

  485. of chapter 13,

  486. God repeats

  487. what he's already

  488. told him,

  489. this land

  490. will be yours.

  491. God's grace

  492. to his people,

  493. God's grace

  494. through

  495. his people.

  496. God uses us

  497. in his rescue mission.

  498. God uses our time,

  499. uses our creativity,

  500. community,

  501. he uses our resources,

  502. if and when

  503. we believe

  504. he will keep

  505. his promises.

  506. God shows his grace

  507. to his people

  508. through his people.

  509. So we use

  510. whatever God's given us

  511. to rescue

  512. and restore

  513. others.

  514. others.

  515. Remember I told you

  516. we're in the story

  517. of Abraham

  518. for two reasons.

  519. One,

  520. to prepare for Romans.

  521. Two,

  522. to see what it looks like

  523. to follow God

  524. in faith.

  525. And part of what

  526. it looks like

  527. to follow God

  528. in faith

  529. is to rescue

  530. stupid nephews

  531. with our 318

  532. trained men,

  533. with our time,

  534. with our resources,

  535. creativity.

  536. Abraham does it

  537. because of

  538. God's promises,

  539. his promise

  540. in chapter 12,

  541. his promise

  542. in chapter 13,

  543. and he knows

  544. whatever happens,

  545. he will never

  546. lose his ultimate

  547. security.

  548. Whatever happens,

  549. God has given him

  550. the promised land

  551. and said

  552. it will

  553. be his.

  554. Brothers and sisters,

  555. the same

  556. is true

  557. for us.

  558. When and where

  559. we believe

  560. God's promises,

  561. we will be willing

  562. to sacrifice

  563. much

  564. to save

  565. others.

  566. Even when it's

  567. because

  568. they've made

  569. their own

  570. bed.

  571. things did

  572. not end

  573. as well

  574. for Nick

  575. Berg

  576. as they

  577. did

  578. for Lot.

  579. It's a long

  580. and gruesome

  581. story that I

  582. will spare

  583. you most

  584. of the

  585. details.

  586. But Nick

  587. ends up

  588. being captured

  589. by a

  590. terrorist

  591. organization

  592. that later

  593. becomes known

  594. as ISIS,

  595. the Islamic

  596. state,

  597. and he is

  598. beheaded

  599. on video

  600. as a piece

  601. of revenge

  602. against

  603. America

  604. and American

  605. torture

  606. in Abu

  607. Graib.

  608. Videos of

  609. Nick's

  610. beheading

  611. go viral.

  612. The power

  613. and the

  614. might of

  615. the United

  616. States

  617. is not

  618. enough

  619. to protect

  620. him.

  621. Nick

  622. left the

  623. land

  624. and the

  625. protection

  626. of the

  627. U.S.

  628. He loses

  629. his life.

  630. Lot

  631. leaves

  632. the land

  633. of

  634. protection

  635. of God

  636. and is

  637. saved

  638. because

  639. God's

  640. promise

  641. is that

  642. he will

  643. never

  644. leave us

  645. or forsake

  646. us.

  647. So he

  648. saves

  649. his people,

  650. he saves

  651. you and

  652. me

  653. in the

  654. midst

  655. of our

  656. foolishness

  657. and our

  658. stupidity.

  659. We do

  660. the same

  661. for others.

  662. God

  663. shows his

  664. grace to

  665. us

  666. and he

  667. shows his

  668. grace

  669. through us.

  670. Let's

  671. pray.

  672. Our

  673. Father in

  674. heaven,

  675. we do

  676. praise you

  677. and thank

  678. you again

  679. for your

  680. word,

  681. which shows

  682. us your

  683. great mercy

  684. and grace

  685. to us

  686. in Jesus

  687. Christ.

  688. We ask

  689. that you

  690. would be

  691. at work

  692. in our

  693. hearts

  694. and our

  695. minds

  696. and our

  697. lives,

  698. that we

  699. would

  700. believe

  701. your

  702. promises

  703. more

  704. and more,

  705. that we

  706. would risk

  707. more and

  708. more for

  709. you and

  710. your

  711. kingdom,

  712. that we

  713. would

  714. follow

  715. you in

  716. faith.

  717. We ask

  718. all of

  719. these

  720. things in

  721. the mighty

  722. name of

  723. Jesus

  724. Christ.

  725. Amen.

  726. I invite

  727. you to

  728. stand for

  729. our

  730. closing

  731. hymn.

  732. Bum,

  733. Thank you.
