  1. We have challenges as a church, as every church does, and I praise God that that is not one of our challenges.

  2. ! It's a great blessing and privilege to be a church with young, crying children. We're thankful. So we give God all the praise for that.

  3. He grows his church by bringing folks from outside. He grows his church by giving us children inside. We're grateful for all of those.

  4. Good morning.

  7. And we are doing that for two reasons.

  8. First, it prepares us to go back into our series in the book of Romans.

  9. Romans chapter 4 will be about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  10. And second, it allows us to ask this question,

  11. what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  12. The last several weeks, we've sort of had this side quest.

  13. In chapters 13 and 14, we've been in the story of Lot.

  14. You'll remember that Lot is captured.

  15. Abraham rescues him.

  16. Has a great victory over multiple kings.

  17. And then last week, we saw Abraham comes back.

  18. He gives all praise and honor and glory to God.

  19. Now we're on the other side of the Lot quest,

  20. although we will come back to Lot next month.

  21. This week, though, we're back to the main plot.

  22. The main plot of Abraham and Sarai

  23. and what is going to happen with the promises that God has made to them.

  24. So our question this week is this.

  25. What is the foundation of our relationship with God?

  26. What is the foundation of our relationship with God?

  27. I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  28. You can turn in your Bible.

  29. You can turn on your phone.

  30. You can turn in your worship guide.

  31. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  32. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  33. every word of God proves true.

  34. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  35. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  36. After these things, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision.

  37. Fear not, Abram.

  38. I am your shield.

  39. Your reward shall be very great.

  40. But Abram said, O Lord God, what will you give me?

  41. For I continue childless,

  42. and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus.

  43. And Abram said,

  44. Behold, you have given me no offspring,

  45. and a member of my household will be my heir.

  46. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him.

  47. This man shall not be your heir.

  48. Your very own son shall be your heir.

  49. And he brought him outside and said,

  50. Look toward heaven and number the stars,

  51. if you are able to number them.

  52. Then he said to him,

  53. So shall your offspring be.

  54. And he believed the Lord,

  55. and he counted it to him as righteousness.

  56. Verse 7.

  57. And he said to him,

  58. I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans

  59. to give you this land to possess.

  60. But he said,

  61. O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?

  62. He said to him,

  63. Bring me a heifer, three years old,

  64. a female goat, three years old,

  65. a ram, three years old,

  66. a turtle dove,

  67. and a young pigeon.

  68. And he brought him all of these,

  69. cut them in half,

  70. and laid each half over against the other.

  71. But he did not cut the birds in half.

  72. And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses,

  73. Abram drove them away.

  74. Verse 12.

  75. As the sun was going down,

  76. a deep sleep fell on Abram.

  77. And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.

  78. Then the Lord said to Abram,

  79. Know for certain that your offspring

  80. will be sojourners in a land that is not theirs,

  81. and will be servants there,

  82. and they will be afflicted for 400 years.

  83. But I will bring judgment on the nation that they serve,

  84. and afterward they shall come out with great possessions.

  85. As for you,

  86. you shall go to your fathers in peace.

  87. You shall be buried in a good old age,

  88. and they shall come back here in the fourth generation,

  89. for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete.

  90. Verse 17.

  91. When the sun had gone down and it was dark,

  92. behold,

  93. a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch

  94. passed between these pieces.

  95. On that day,

  96. the Lord made a covenant with Abram,

  97. saying,

  98. To your offspring I give this land,

  99. from the river of Egypt

  100. to the great river,

  101. the river Euphrates,

  102. the land of the Kenites,

  103. the Kenizzites,

  104. the Kadmonites,

  105. the Hittites,

  106. the Perizzites,

  107. the Rephaim,

  108. the Amorites,

  109. the Canaanites,

  110. the Girgashites,

  111. and the Jebusites.

  112. I invite you to pray with me

  113. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  114. Our Father in heaven,

  115. we do praise you

  116. for this church that you have planted

  117. and established here

  118. before it was ever known to any of us.

  119. We thank you even more than that

  120. for your word

  121. that you have given to us

  122. to show us

  123. the way to walk in this world

  124. and even more

  125. to show us the great salvation

  126. that you have for us in Jesus Christ.

  127. We ask that you would send your spirit now

  128. to help us do what we can't do on our own,

  129. that we would be able to understand your word,

  130. that you would speak clearly to us in it,

  131. that we would see you

  132. and we would see Christ.

  133. We ask these things

  134. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  135. Amen.

  136. I know of a man

  137. who has four children,

  138. and at one point,

  139. when his kids were young,

  140. they had this ritual at bedtime

  141. when he would ask his kids this question,

  142. do you know that mommy and daddy love you?

  143. It was an easy question,

  144. and so they would just say,

  145. yes, we know that mommy and daddy love us.

  146. And then he would follow it up

  147. with a second question,

  148. do you know why mommy and daddy love you?

  149. And they would go through

  150. this set of answers each time.

  151. The kids would say,

  152. do you love us because we're good at baseball?

  153. No.

  154. Do you love me because I caught such a big fish?

  155. No.

  156. Do you love me because I'm so obedient?

  157. No.

  158. Maybe they're not.

  159. Do you love me because I got good grades?

  160. No.

  161. No.

  162. I'll tell you their final answer at the end.

  163. The real question they're asking, though, is this.

  164. What is the basis of our relationship?

  165. What is the foundation?

  166. Is it your baseball?

  167. Is it your grades?

  168. Is it your behavior?

  169. What is really at the bottom of all of it?

  170. Genesis 15 presents that same question to us.

  171. What is the foundation of our relationship with God?

  172. Why is it that God loves us?

  173. It's going to take us a little bit to get to the end,

  174. the bottom of that answer,

  175. but I want you to jump in with me

  176. at the very beginning of chapter 15.

  177. You have to remember that we're coming off of chapter 14.

  178. And what happens at the very end of that chapter?

  179. Abraham refuses to receive the spoils

  180. offered to him by the king of Sodom.

  181. The king of Sodom offers all of the spoils.

  182. Abraham rejects all of the spoils.

  183. And that helps us understand what's going on in verse 1.

  184. God comes to him and says,

  185. Fear not, Abram.

  186. I am your shield.

  187. Your reward shall be very great.

  188. Which raises the question for us,

  189. why is God saying this to Abram?

  190. And why is he saying it now?

  191. Of all the times in the narrative,

  192. why is it this specific point

  193. that God decides to tell him,

  194. By the way, don't be afraid.

  195. I'm your shield.

  196. Your very great reward.

  197. Well, it's very simple.

  198. Abraham's just sacrificed for God's glory.

  199. He's given up all these things that were his right.

  200. Of course he's entitled to take the spoils

  201. from rescuing Sodom, right?

  202. And so God's saying,

  203. Look, I see you.

  204. I've seen the sacrifices that you've made.

  205. I will take care of you.

  206. Yes, you gave up everything from Sodom.

  207. But, and,

  208. your reward shall be very great.

  209. Don't worry.

  210. You gave it up.

  211. I will take care of you.

  212. Last week I told you about a family trip

  213. that I went on in the year 2000

  214. to Easley, South Carolina.

  215. August of 2000 when I turned 11.

  216. And you'll remember we went to help

  217. an older relative with her house and her yard.

  218. And when we did that trip,

  219. that trip cost my family something.

  220. But my dad took off a couple days of work,

  221. which we know is precious, right?

  222. Cost my parents the money for a hotel and gas.

  223. And we did it.

  224. My parents were happy to do that.

  225. We got back home.

  226. And within a couple of days,

  227. a few days,

  228. out of the blue,

  229. my dad received an award at work.

  230. And for that award,

  231. he was given

  232. two days of vacation

  233. and $200.

  234. The exact amount,

  235. almost to the penny,

  236. of the hotel and the gas.

  237. And my mom said,

  238. God just handed it right back.

  239. Christian,

  240. whatever you give,

  241. God gives it all back.

  242. It may not,

  243. it probably won't be as direct

  244. or immediate as it was

  245. for my parents in that story.

  246. And it may not be in this life.

  247. But he will restore

  248. whatever you give.

  249. Abraham,

  250. you've sacrificed,

  251. you've rescued Lot,

  252. you gave up the plunder,

  253. you gave up the glory.

  254. Don't worry.

  255. I am your shield.

  256. Your reward shall be very great.

  257. Have you lost things

  258. for following Jesus?

  259. Have you given things up?

  260. Have you sacrificed something?

  261. Fear not.

  262. God is your shield.

  263. Your reward

  264. shall be very great.

  265. What does it look like

  266. to follow God in faith?

  267. Whatever we give,

  268. we receive so much more.

  269. If not in this life,

  270. then in the life to come.

  271. It turns out,

  272. Jesus says something like this too.

  273. Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  274. truly I say to you,

  275. there is no one

  276. who has left house

  277. or brothers

  278. or sisters

  279. or mother

  280. or father

  281. or children

  282. or lands

  283. for my sake

  284. and for the gospel

  285. who will not receive

  286. a hundredfold now

  287. in this time

  288. houses

  289. and brothers

  290. and sisters

  291. and mothers

  292. and children

  293. and lands

  294. with persecutions

  295. and in the age to come

  296. eternal.

  297. life.

  298. Never underestimate

  299. God's generosity.

  300. The Lord loves his people.

  301. Christian,

  302. he loves you.

  303. Your sacrifice

  304. is not in vain.

  305. There's a foundational question

  306. that we have to get straight

  307. for the rest of life.

  308. If you're a Christian,

  309. this question matters more

  310. than almost any other.

  311. Do you believe

  312. that God will care for you

  313. or do you not?

  314. Do you believe

  315. that God means it

  316. and he'll do it

  317. and he'll do it

  318. when he says,

  319. I will never leave you

  320. nor forsake you?

  321. Do you believe Jesus

  322. when he says,

  323. not a hair

  324. can fall

  325. from your head

  326. without your father

  327. in heaven

  328. knowing?

  329. And underneath that,

  330. there's an even more

  331. important question,

  332. which is this.

  333. did Jesus

  334. rise from the dead

  335. or did

  336. he not?

  337. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8:32

  338. verse 32.

  339. He who did not

  340. spare his own son

  341. but gave him up

  342. for us all,

  343. how will he not

  344. also with him

  345. graciously give us

  346. all things?

  347. Christian,

  348. whatever you have lost,

  349. do not fear.

  350. God is your shield.

  351. Your reward

  352. shall be very great.

  353. All that is good

  354. and true.

  355. we've been on a mountaintop.

  356. It's now time

  357. to go back

  358. straight down

  359. to sea level

  360. in verse 2.

  361. Abraham says,

  362. okay God,

  363. that is really cool.

  364. I'm so glad

  365. you're going to be

  366. my shield

  367. and my very great reward

  368. but guess what?

  369. That doesn't really matter

  370. and it doesn't matter

  371. because I don't have

  372. a child.

  373. Who cares

  374. that you can replace

  375. all this spoil?

  376. I have no one

  377. to give it to.

  378. I don't have a kid.

  379. This is verse 3

  380. and I don't have a kid

  381. because you haven't

  382. given me one

  383. and so

  384. I have this problem.

  385. Any spoil you give me

  386. it's going to go

  387. to Eliezer

  388. of Damascus

  389. and he's referring

  390. most likely

  391. to a servant here.

  392. Hey,

  393. there's this person

  394. in my household.

  395. Sarai and I

  396. have no child.

  397. What

  398. does it matter?

  399. This takes us back

  400. to the very beginning

  401. of the Abram story.

  402. The very first thing

  403. we learn about Sarai

  404. in chapter 11

  405. is this.

  406. She is not able

  407. to have children.

  408. The promise

  409. in chapter 12

  410. is that despite that

  411. they're going to be

  412. a great nation, right?

  413. And yet we find out

  414. also chapter 12,

  415. Abraham is 74 years old

  416. and none of it

  417. has come true.

  418. And so Abraham says,

  419. so what?

  420. So what that

  421. you're my shield?

  422. I don't have

  423. what matters

  424. most.

  425. And so God

  426. tells him here

  427. in verse 4,

  428. you don't have it now

  429. but you will.

  430. Not only

  431. will you have

  432. your very own son,

  433. verse 4,

  434. verse 5,

  435. number the stars.

  436. And you can

  437. number the stars,

  438. you will know

  439. the size

  440. of your offspring.

  441. And so we get

  442. to verse 6,

  443. one of the most

  444. shocking

  445. and important

  446. verses

  447. in the entire

  448. Bible.

  449. And it is shocking

  450. for two reasons.

  451. First,

  452. I don't want you

  453. to lose here

  454. how staggering

  455. it is

  456. the difference

  457. between the reality

  458. and the promise.

  459. The reality

  460. is that Sarai

  461. cannot have children

  462. and that Abraham

  463. is very old

  464. and they actually

  465. don't have any

  466. children right now.

  467. The promise

  468. is that they

  469. are going to

  470. have more children

  471. than the stars

  472. in the sky.

  473. God tells

  474. this staggering

  475. thing to Abraham

  476. and what does he say?

  477. Oh, okay.

  478. And he believed

  479. the Lord.

  480. Why is Abraham

  481. our great father

  482. in the faith?

  483. Because God

  484. comes and gives

  485. him something

  486. that seems

  487. completely impossible,

  488. right?

  489. And Abraham

  490. says,

  491. yes,

  492. I believe that.

  493. I'll take that,

  494. I'll live on that,

  495. I'll act on that.

  496. Okay,

  497. that's shocking.

  498. What's even

  499. more shocking

  500. is the second

  501. half of the verse.

  502. And he counted

  503. it to him

  504. as righteousness.

  505. Now to understand

  506. how shocking

  507. this is

  508. and to understand

  509. what he means

  510. by righteousness,

  511. we have to go

  512. back in the story

  513. all the way back

  514. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  515. Remember,

  516. Adam and Eve

  517. rebel against God

  518. in the garden

  519. and they take part

  520. of the forbidden fruit.

  521. In that moment,

  522. Adam and Eve

  523. lose their righteousness.

  524. They lose their

  525. standing with God,

  526. their relationship

  527. with him.

  528. That lack

  529. of righteousness

  530. as sons and daughters

  531. of Adam and Eve

  532. is passed on to us.

  533. Okay?

  534. We also don't have

  535. right standing with God.

  536. And we don't have that

  537. because we daily

  538. do not love him,

  539. serve him,

  540. obey him,

  541. worship him

  542. as we should.

  543. And so the whole

  544. plot of the Bible

  545. turns on this question.

  546. How will righteousness

  547. be restored?

  548. One man puts the story

  549. of the Old Testament

  550. in this way.

  551. How will God's people

  552. return to God's presence

  553. in God's land?

  554. How will God's people

  555. return to God's presence

  556. in God's land?

  557. Which is a way of asking

  558. how is righteousness

  559. going to be restored

  560. in light of humanity's

  561. rebellion against God?

  562. What's going to happen

  563. now that we live

  564. east of Eden?

  565. And verse 6 says,

  566. you know,

  567. it's actually going to be

  568. really simple.

  569. Believe.

  570. Believe that God's promises

  571. are true.

  572. that is part of the answer.

  573. I've told you before

  574. about the English writer

  575. Samuel Johnson

  576. from the 18th century

  577. who says people need

  578. to be reminded

  579. more often than they need

  580. to be instructed.

  581. And so I'm going to remind you

  582. of some things this morning.

  583. You live in a world

  584. full of voices

  585. that are not

  586. telling you

  587. about various things

  588. you need to do

  589. to be loved

  590. and lovable

  591. and okay.

  592. Some of those voices

  593. tell you that you need

  594. to take Botox

  595. to look young enough.

  596. Some of them

  597. are telling you

  598. that you need

  599. to wear the right thing

  600. and go to the right school

  601. and be powerful enough.

  602. Some of those voices

  603. tell you you need

  604. to be funny enough,

  605. athletic enough,

  606. have enough friends,

  607. hold the right beliefs

  608. for your social group.

  609. hope.

  610. Genesis chapter 15

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  611. says something

  612. radically different.

  613. What do you need

  614. to do

  615. to be okay,

  616. to be right with God?

  617. Believe.

  618. That is what God

  619. offers.

  620. Christianity is the only way

  621. to get off the treadmill

  622. of justifying your right

  623. to exist.

  624. Christianity is the only way

  625. to get off the treadmill

  626. of justifying your right

  627. to exist.

  628. I'm going to ask you

  629. to go back with me

  630. to page three

  631. of your worship guide.

  632. Jim already read this

  633. for us.

  634. He's talking about

  635. Abraham and his belief.

  636. Verse 7,

  637. blessed are those

  638. whose lawless deeds

  639. are forgiven

  640. and whose sins

  641. are covered.

  642. Blessed is the man

  643. against whom

  644. the Lord

  645. will not count

  646. his sin.

  647. How are your lawless deeds

  648. going to be forgiven?

  649. Believe.

  650. How are your sins

  651. going to be covered?

  652. Believe.

  653. How will the Lord

  654. not count against you

  655. your sin?

  656. Believe.

  657. Of course,

  658. belief,

  659. our belief,

  660. is not the foundation

  661. of a relationship

  662. with God.

  663. Your faith

  664. is not some sort

  665. of work

  666. that justifies you.

  667. And so we have

  668. to keep digging

  669. even more

  670. into this passage.

  671. God's promise

  672. is believing them

  673. part of the answer.

  674. God calls us

  675. to believe them.

  676. He credits that

  677. to us

  678. as righteousness.

  679. But we also have

  680. in this passage

  681. God's sacrifice.

  682. Verse 8,

  683. Abraham believes

  684. and he needs

  685. assurance.

  686. Verse 7,

  687. God's promised

  688. him to land.

  689. Land and descendants

  690. are part of what's

  691. happening here.

  692. Verse 8,

  693. Abraham believes,

  694. God credits that

  695. belief to him

  696. as righteousness

  697. and as a feeble,

  698. falling,

  699. frail person.

  700. He is looking

  701. for reassurance.

  702. What happens here

  703. in verses 9

  704. through 17,

  705. there's a lot

  706. going on,

  707. so I'm going to

  708. summarize it for you

  709. very briefly.

  710. Abraham takes

  711. five animals.

  712. Three of those

  713. animals get cut

  714. in half.

  715. Those halves

  716. are placed

  717. on opposite

  718. sides

  719. of basically

  720. a path

  721. that someone

  722. can walk

  723. through.

  724. So I want you

  725. to imagine

  726. a path

  727. or a road

  728. and on each

  729. side

  730. there's the

  731. halves

  732. of the animals.

  733. So on one

  734. side you've

  735. got heads

  736. and the other

  737. side you've

  738. got tails.

  739. I'm assuming

  740. that's how

  741. the animals

  742. were cut.

  743. And this

  744. sounds like

  745. a strange

  746. practice

  747. to most

  748. of you.

  749. Maybe some

  750. of you do

  751. this from

  752. time to

  753. time.

  754. The reason

  755. is this.

  756. In the ancient

  757. Near East,

  758. if you were

  759. making a

  760. covenant,

  761. an agreement,

  762. you would

  763. chop animals

  764. in half

  765. like this

  766. and then

  767. both parties

  768. would walk

  769. down the

  770. path.

  771. And you

  772. were acting

  773. out the

  774. consequences

  775. of breaking

  776. your agreement.

  777. So you

  778. were essentially

  779. saying,

  780. if I don't

  781. keep my

  782. word on

  783. this,

  784. may I

  785. be like

  786. these

  787. animals.

  788. If I

  789. break my

  790. promise,

  791. may I

  792. be cut

  793. in half.

  794. Okay,

  795. so that's

  796. what's

  797. happening.

  798. There's a

  799. covenant

  800. being made

  801. between

  802. Abraham

  803. and God,

  804. animals on

  805. each side

  806. of the

  807. path to

  808. represent

  809. the curse

  810. for anyone

  811. who breaks

  812. the agreement.

  813. Verse

  814. 17,

  815. a smoking

  816. fire pot

  817. and a

  818. flaming

  819. torch

  820. passed,

  821. between

  822. these

  823. pieces.

  824. So the

  825. fire pot

  826. and the

  827. torch

  828. represent

  829. God.

  830. God is

  831. passing

  832. through the

  833. animals

  834. and saying,

  835. if I

  836. don't keep

  837. my word,

  838. if I

  839. break the

  840. covenant,

  841. may I

  842. become like

  843. these

  844. animals.

  845. Now,

  846. did you

  847. notice

  848. where

  849. Abraham

  850. walks

  851. between

  852. the

  853. animals?

  854. No,

  855. you didn't

  856. because he

  857. doesn't.

  858. Abraham

  859. is

  860. left off the

  861. hook.

  862. That's the

  863. wrinkle here

  864. is that

  865. God

  866. upholds

  867. both

  868. sides.

  869. God

  870. breaks

  871. it.

  872. God

  873. is cut

  874. in half.

  875. If

  876. Abraham

  877. breaks

  878. it,

  879. God

  880. is cut

  881. in half.

  882. Of course,

  883. that is

  884. exactly

  885. what happens,

  886. right?

  887. the story

  888. of Israel

  889. and of

  890. mankind

  891. is that

  892. they

  893. continue

  894. to fail

  895. to worship,

  896. love,

  897. serve,

  898. and obey

  899. God.

  900. God

  901. upholds

  902. his side

  903. of the

  904. agreement.

  905. Mankind

  906. does not.

  907. But who

  908. does the

  909. punishment

  910. fall on?

  911. It

  912. doesn't

  913. fall on

  914. man.

  915. It

  916. falls

  917. on

  918. God.

  919. Because

  920. he is

  921. the only

  922. one

  923. who

  924. walked

  925. between

  926. the

  927. halves.

  928. Mind

  929. blowing.

  930. At this

  931. point,

  932. Abraham

  933. is probably

  934. shaking

  935. with how

  936. overwhelmed

  937. he is.

  938. We

  939. don't get

  940. cut in

  941. half.

  942. God

  943. does.

  944. I invite

  945. you to

  946. turn with

  947. me to

  948. the back

  949. of your

  950. worship

  951. guide.

  952. You'll

  953. see this.

  954. In

  955. Jesus,

  956. God

  957. himself

  958. bears the

  959. punishment

  960. of being

  961. almost

  962. literally

  963. torn apart

  964. by the

  965. whips,

  966. the

  967. thorns,

  968. the

  969. nails,

  970. and the

  971. spear for

  972. our sin

  973. so that

  974. he could

  975. be faithful

  976. to his

  977. promise to

  978. be our

  979. God,

  980. that we

  981. might be

  982. his people

  983. through

  984. simple

  985. faith in

  986. him.

  987. What is

  988. the foundation

  989. of our

  990. relationship

  991. with God?

  992. First of

  993. all,

  994. it's

  995. belief in

  996. his

  997. promises

  998. which he

  999. credits to

  1000. us as

  1001. righteousness.

  1002. Second,

  1003. it is the

  1004. sacrifice that

  1005. God takes

  1006. upon himself

  1007. that Jesus

  1008. dies the

  1009. death that

  1010. we deserve

  1011. for our

  1012. sins and

  1013. lives the

  1014. perfect life

  1015. that we

  1016. should have

  1017. lived.

  1018. But I

  1019. want you to

  1020. dig underneath

  1021. that even

  1022. deeper because

  1023. there is a

  1024. deeper

  1025. foundation.

  1026. If we

  1027. say that

  1028. Christ's

  1029. death is the

  1030. foundation

  1031. ultimately,

  1032. then we have

  1033. to say in

  1034. some ways that

  1035. Jesus was

  1036. convincing God

  1037. to love

  1038. us.

  1039. But what

  1040. does John

    John 3 chapter mention

  1041. chapter 3

  1042. tell us?

  1043. For God

  1044. so loved

  1045. the world

  1046. that he

  1047. gave his

  1048. only son

  1049. that whoever

  1050. believes in

  1051. him should

  1052. not perish

  1053. but have

  1054. eternal life.

  1055. You notice

  1056. the sequence?

  1057. God loved

  1058. the world

  1059. first,

  1060. sent his

  1061. son.

  1062. I told you

  1063. at the

  1064. beginning I

  1065. know a man

  1066. who has

  1067. four kids.

  1068. and when

  1069. he puts

  1070. his kids

  1071. to bed

  1072. he has

  1073. a ritual

  1074. with them

  1075. and he

  1076. asks them

  1077. do you

  1078. know that

  1079. mommy and

  1080. daddy love

  1081. you?

  1082. And they

  1083. say yes.

  1084. And then

  1085. he asks

  1086. them do you

  1087. know why

  1088. mommy and

  1089. daddy love

  1090. you?

  1091. And they

  1092. go through

  1093. all the

  1094. reasons that

  1095. are not

  1096. true.

  1097. It's not

  1098. because you

  1099. bought a

  1100. big fish.

  1101. It's not

  1102. because you're

  1103. so obedient.

  1104. You're probably

  1105. not.

  1106. It is not

  1107. because you're

  1108. good at

  1109. school.

  1110. It's not

  1111. because you're

  1112. so funny.

  1113. They get to

  1114. the end of

  1115. the questions

  1116. and the dad

  1117. finally says

  1118. this.

  1119. We love

  1120. you because

  1121. you are

  1122. our child

  1123. and that

  1124. will never

  1125. change.

  1126. Christian,

  1127. what is the

  1128. foundation of

  1129. your relationship

  1130. with God?

  1131. He loves

  1132. you because

  1133. you're his

  1134. child and

  1135. that will

  1136. never change.

  1137. love.

  1138. Let's

  1139. pray.

  1140. Our

  1141. Father in

  1142. heaven,

  1143. we do

  1144. praise you

  1145. and thank

  1146. you for

  1147. your great

  1148. love,

  1149. love beyond

  1150. what we

  1151. can

  1152. comprehend

  1153. and

  1154. understand.

  1155. We ask

  1156. that we

  1157. would turn

  1158. to you

  1159. rather than

  1160. all the

  1161. other things

  1162. that offer

  1163. to make

  1164. us okay

  1165. because we

  1166. know that

  1167. you and

  1168. you alone

  1169. can give

  1170. us the

  1171. righteousness

  1172. that matters.

  1173. We ask

  1174. these things

  1175. in Jesus'

  1176. name.

  1177. Amen.

  1178. Amen.

  1179. Amen.
