  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced that there's no one so good. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  4. This morning, we're continuing our series in Genesis. You'll remember that Genesis tells two stories. It tells the story of the origin of the world.

  5. That's in Genesis chapters 1 through 11. And then in chapters 11 through 50 to the end, it tells us the origin story of God's people of Israel, beginning with Abraham.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  6. We are focused in on chapters 11 through 25 because we're looking at Abraham's story and we're doing that for two reasons.

  7. First, it's preparing us to go back into our series in the book of Romans, where we will pick up in Romans chapter 4, which is about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  8. And second, it allows us to answer this question. What does it look like to follow God in faith?

  9. I told you last week when we were in Genesis chapter 15 that we were in one of the most important passages in Scripture.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  10. This week, Genesis 16, we're in one of the most painful and tender passages of Scripture.

  11. Painful because of the way that humans act.

  12. Tender because of the way that God acts.

  13. As we come to this story in chapter 16, we all know the appeal, the temptation of a quick fix.

  14. We know what it's like to wish that things would happen faster.

  15. We grow tired of waiting for our lives and for circumstances to change.

  16. And so we know the temptation that in the heat of life, we're tempted to choose our way instead of God's way.

  17. We're tempted to go the fast way instead of waiting for God to act.

  18. This passage we're going to see, Abraham and Sarah face the very same temptation, that very same struggle.

  19. They have been waiting, unable to have children.

  20. Remember, we found that out at the end of chapter 11 at the very beginning.

  21. What's the first thing we found out about Sarah?

  22. She is unable to have kids.

  23. And then chapter 12, there's this great promise.

  24. God comes to Abraham and says, look, you're going to be the father of this great nation.

  25. The promise is then repeated at the end of chapter 13.

  26. Last week, chapter 15, remember, Abraham asks God, hey, by the way, what about my heir?

  27. You made this great promise.

  28. I still don't have a son.

  29. And God says, don't worry.

  30. Your descendants will be as many as the stars.

  31. And so there's this anxiety, this ache, this impatience as Abraham is caught between the gap,

  32. the gap between God's promises for the future and his current reality.

  33. And so as we come to this passage, Genesis 16 this morning, we're asking this question.

  34. What happens when we do things our way instead of God's way?

  35. What happens when we do things our way instead of God's way?

  36. With that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 16.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  37. If you're new to the Bible, this is the very first book, so it'll be easy for you to find.

  38. You can turn in your Bible.

  39. You can turn in your worship guide.

  40. You can turn on your phone.

  41. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  42. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  43. every word of God proves true.

  44. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  45. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 16.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  46. Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had born him no children.

  47. She had a female Egyptian servant whose name was Hagar.

  48. And Sarai said to Abram,

  49. Behold now, the Lord has prevented me from bearing children.

  50. Go into my servant.

  51. It may be that I shall obtain children by her.

  52. And Abram listened to the voice of Sarai.

  53. So after Abram had lived 10 years in the land of Canaan,

  54. Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her servant,

  55. and gave her to Abram, her husband, as a wife.

  56. And he went into Hagar, and she conceived.

  57. And when she saw that she had conceived,

  58. she looked with contempt on her mistress.

  59. And Sarai said to Abram,

  60. May the wrong done to me be on you.

  61. I gave my servant to your embrace.

  62. And when she saw that she had conceived,

  63. she looked on me with contempt.

  64. May the Lord judge between you and me.

  65. But Abram said to Sarai,

  66. Behold, your servant is in your power.

  67. Do to her as you please.

  68. Then Sarai dealt harshly with her,

  69. and she fled from her.

  70. Verse 7.

  71. The angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness,

  72. the spring on the way to shore.

  73. And he said,

  74. Hagar, servant of Sarai,

  75. where have you come from,

  76. and where are you going?

  77. She said,

  78. I am fleeing from my mistress, Sarai.

  79. The angel of the Lord said to her,

  80. Return to your mistress and submit to her.

  81. The angel of the Lord also said to her,

  82. I will surely multiply your offspring

  83. so that they cannot be numbered for multitude.

  84. And the angel of the Lord said to her,

  85. Behold, you are pregnant and shall bear a son.

  86. You shall call his name Ishmael

  87. because the Lord has listened to your affliction.

  88. He shall be a wild donkey of a man,

  89. his hand against everyone,

  90. and everyone's hand against him.

  91. And he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen.

  92. So she called the name of the Lord

  93. who spoke to her,

  94. You are a God of seeing.

  95. For she said,

  96. Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.

  97. Therefore the well was called Bir Lahai Roy.

  98. It lies between Kadesh and Bered.

  99. And Hagar bore Abram a son,

  100. and Abram called the name of his son,

  101. whom Hagar bore,

  102. Ishmael.

  103. Abram was 86 years old

  104. when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham.

  105. I invite you to pray with me

  106. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  107. Our Father in heaven,

  108. we praise you and thank you this morning

  109. that you are a God of seeing.

  110. That you see us

  111. in the midst of our struggles and trials and sin,

  112. and that you haven't given up on us,

  113. but instead you've given us your word,

  114. and even more than that,

  115. you've given us your son.

  116. And so we ask that you would help us again this morning,

  117. that you would open up your word to us,

  118. that we would see it clearly,

  119. that we would grow in our knowledge and love for you,

  120. our obedience to you,

  121. that we would see Jesus Christ

  122. as more and more beautiful.

  123. And we ask all of these things

  124. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  125. Amen.

  126. We live in a world of quick fixes.

  127. We know that not just from others,

  128. but from ourselves.

  129. But the tragic reality is

  130. often our quick fixes make the problem much, much worse.

  131. You may be lonely and decide that to solve that,

  132. you're going to go onto social media for a little bit,

  133. but researchers tell us

  134. that actually makes us more lonely.

  135. We live in a culture of radical diets,

  136. and so you may think,

  137. I'm going to lose weight really fast,

  138. I'm going to go on a crash diet

  139. by eating almost nothing.

  140. Well, what happens?

  141. You do lose weight fast,

  142. and then your body goes into starvation mode,

  143. and your metabolism plummets,

  144. and suddenly your problem is much worse than before.

  145. Kids, you know this as well.

  146. You get poison ivy, right?

  147. And it itches so bad.

  148. And so you think,

  149. well, I'll solve this problem.

  150. I'll scratch it.

  151. What does that do?

  152. Makes it much, much worse.

  153. My journey as a homeowner

  154. could be described in this way,

  155. hiring professionals

  156. to come in and redo and replace

  157. what previous homeowners thought they could accomplish.

  158. A quick fix is what Sarah does in this passage.

  159. We find out in verse three

  160. that she has been waiting for a long time.

  161. She has, in fact, been waiting for 10 full years,

  162. and she has decided it is time to wait no more.

  163. God has promised her,

  164. promised Abram that great nations will come from him,

  165. and yet not only do they not have great nations,

  166. they don't have a single child.

  167. She blames God in verses two and three,

  168. and this is true in a sense.

  169. It is true that God has prevented her from having kids.

  170. What she doesn't say is the other half of the story

  171. that God has promised.

  172. Right?

  173. She knows that she doesn't have a child.

  174. What she forgets is that she can hold on to his promise

  175. that he is going to come and answer.

  176. And so in the midst of that tension,

  177. in the midst of her ache and anxiety and impatience,

  178. Sarah takes things into her own hands,

  179. fails to trust God.

  180. This plan that she concocts,

  181. and the words that are used actually echo Genesis chapter three.

  182. If you're familiar with the book of Genesis,

  183. you know that chapter three is when Adam and Eve

  184. rebel against God by eating the forbidden fruit.

  185. Here, verse three, we're told she takes Hagar

  186. and gives Hagar to her husband.

  187. Genesis chapter three,

  188. Eve takes the forbidden fruit,

  189. gives it to her husband.

  190. Here, verse two,

  191. Abram listened to the voice of Sarah.

  192. Genesis chapter three,

  193. God comes to confront Adam and Eve,

  194. and what does he say to Adam?

  195. You listen to the voice of your wife.

  196. And so the narrator is telling us,

  197. look, when Abraham and Sarah do this,

  198. they are reenacting Genesis three all over again.

  199. They are failing to trust God's word all over again.

  200. And so the results are predictable here.

  201. We ignore God's ways.

  202. It does not fix our problems.

  203. It makes them much, much worse.

  204. It makes them worse in two ways.

  205. First, we hurt ourselves.

  206. Notice what happens in verses five and six.

  207. Sarah gets exactly what she wants.

  208. What she's asked for comes true.

  209. And what's her response?

  210. She is filled with rage.

  211. She's livid with Abraham for going along with her plan.

  212. Her shame and her frustration are actually worse

  213. than they were before.

  214. She now has this daily reminder that Hagar is able.

  215. She is unable, right?

  216. She has this raw anger in verses five through six,

  217. which reminds us,

  218. it's when our plans are thwarted

  219. that we really get to know ourselves.

  220. It's our emotions that tell the truth.

  221. When we're angry or sad,

  222. we get to find out what's really important to us.

  223. Not only is she filled with rage,

  224. the narrator here makes it clear to us

  225. her plan did not work.

  226. It worked in one sense.

  227. It works in the sense that Hagar does,

  228. in fact, become pregnant.

  229. It fails in another.

  230. Look with me at verse two.

  231. The plan here is,

  232. I shall obtain children by her.

  233. The goal is that Sarai has a kid.

  234. Now go to the end of the chapter.

  235. Verse 15,

  236. Abram called the name of his son,

  237. whom Hagar bore.

  238. Verse 16,

  239. Abram was 86 years old when Hagar bore.

  240. In other words,

  241. this is not Sarai's child.

  242. The plan in an ultimate sense has not worked.

  243. Hagar's gonna bear a child for me?

  244. No.

  245. Hagar is going to bear a child for Hagar.

  246. It's not just Sarai who hurts himself.

  247. Abram also hurts himself.

  248. What does Abram want?

  249. He wants what any husband wants,

  250. peace.

  251. Fortunately,

  252. he wants peace at any cost, right?

  253. And so instead of getting peace,

  254. he gets the opposite.

  255. He gets his wife cursing and yelling at him.

  256. As we look at verses five through six,

  257. we can say on the one hand,

  258. Sarai's anger is irrational, right?

  259. On the other hand,

  260. it's justified.

  261. It's irrational in the sense

  262. that she actually asked for this.

  263. It's irrational that Abram

  264. did exactly what she said.

  265. It's justified in another sense.

  266. Abram should have known better.

  267. What is God saying when he says,

  268. hey, Abram, you listened to your wife?

  269. He's saying,

  270. you should have been leading your family.

  271. She's saying this to him,

  272. why did you let me do that?

  273. You should have known

  274. that I wasn't thinking straight, right?

  275. You knew I was overcome

  276. with my own pain and shame.

  277. Shame.

  278. Why didn't you stop it?

  279. You chose the easy way

  280. rather than the right way.

  281. Unfortunately,

  282. we don't just hurt ourselves.

  283. We also hurt others.

  284. Hagar ends up

  285. as the collateral damage

  286. of this passage.

  287. Verse six,

  288. she is driven out.

  289. Abram says,

  290. look, your servant's in your power,

  291. so he's continuing

  292. to try to have peace.

  293. Do to her as you please.

  294. Then Sarai dealt harshly with her

  295. and she fled from her.

  296. Notice before that moment,

  297. the way that Abram and Sarai

  298. speak about Hagar.

  299. This is gonna become important

  300. in a moment.

  301. They are unable

  302. to refer to her by name.

  303. Verse two,

  304. a female Egyptian servant.

  305. Sorry,

  306. verse two,

  307. go to my servant.

  308. Verse five,

  309. my servant.

  310. Verse six,

  311. your servant.

  312. When it comes to Abram and Sarai,

  313. Hagar has no name.

  314. When we do things our way

  315. and not God's way,

  316. we end up using

  317. and dehumanizing

  318. the people around us.

  319. God's laws,

  320. what we're seeing here,

  321. are not arbitrary.

  322. They come out

  323. of his fatherly care

  324. that he wants

  325. only for us

  326. what is best.

  327. And so Sarai and Abraham

  328. choose to learn that

  329. the hard way.

  330. Sarai loses her servant.

  331. Abram loses his peace.

  332. Hagar loses her home.

  333. everyone loses.

  334. Now it'd be easy

  335. for us at this point

  336. to throw them

  337. under the bus

  338. for what's happened here.

  339. The reality is

  340. that what Hagar

  341. happens to her here

  342. is actually

  343. a common cultural practice.

  344. In the ancient Near East,

  345. if you can't have a kid

  346. and you're wealthy enough

  347. to have a servant,

  348. this is the accepted wisdom.

  349. This is the way

  350. of the world.

  351. This is just

  352. what you do,

  353. right?

  354. If you have enough money,

  355. if you have enough resources,

  356. why not?

  357. Just like Sarai,

  358. we are tempted

  359. to do things our way

  360. rather than God's way

  361. in the midst

  362. of our own impatience

  363. and pain.

  364. Sarai has a hard time

  365. waiting 10 years.

  366. In our culture,

  367. we have a hard time

  368. waiting 10 days,

  369. if not 10 minutes.

  370. Sarai and Abraham

  371. knew nothing

  372. of two-day prime delivery.

  373. We, in fact,

  374. want the most efficient way,

  375. right?

  376. We want things

  377. to be fast

  378. and practical.

  379. We want to have

  380. justice now.

  381. And so instead

  382. of waiting on God

  383. to act,

  384. we do it ourselves

  385. through our gossip.

  386. We see riots

  387. more and more

  388. across our country

  389. as people believe

  390. it is up to us

  391. and only us

  392. to make things right.

  393. You may be married

  394. and you've seen

  395. the dreams

  396. of what you thought

  397. your marriage

  398. would be shattered.

  399. and instead

  400. of doing

  401. the hard work

  402. of rebuilding,

  403. you bury yourself

  404. in kids

  405. or work.

  406. Maybe you're single

  407. and you want

  408. desperately

  409. to be married

  410. and you're tired

  411. of waiting.

  412. And so you decide,

  413. you know what I'm going

  414. to do?

  415. I'm going to date

  416. someone

  417. who does not share

  418. my deepest

  419. commitments

  420. and values.

  421. because being

  422. with someone

  423. is better

  424. than no one,

  425. right?

  426. God has not

  427. brought me

  428. someone who

  429. believes in him.

  430. I will find

  431. a Hagar.

  432. Of course,

  433. the problem

  434. is this.

  435. There are more,

  436. there's more

  437. than one way

  438. to be lonely.

  439. One of those

  440. is worse

  441. than the other.

  442. Parents,

  443. temptation,

  444. right?

  445. like Abram

  446. is to want

  447. peace

  448. and comfort.

  449. And so you decide,

  450. you know,

  451. I'm not going

  452. to discipline

  453. my kids.

  454. Of course,

  455. if you don't

  456. discipline now,

  457. things will be

  458. much,

  459. much worse

  460. later.

  461. We always

  462. constantly

  463. face this

  464. temptation,

  465. the temptation

  466. to do things

  467. the fast way

  468. rather than

  469. to wait

  470. for God.

  471. Amen.

  472. Where do we

  473. get the power

  474. though?

  475. Where do we

  476. get the power

  477. to do things

  478. God's way

  479. and not our

  480. way?

  481. To find that out,

  482. we're going to

  483. have to move

  484. away from

  485. Abram and

  486. Sarai.

  487. They're negative

  488. examples for us

  489. and we have to

  490. turn to Hagar.

  491. Hagar here in

  492. this passage

  493. is the one

  494. person who

  495. is willing

  496. to trust

  497. God.

  498. God.

  499. It's not the

  500. heroes of the

  501. faith who

  502. help us here.

  503. It's an

  504. unexpected

  505. character.

  506. It's the

  507. Egyptian slave

  508. woman.

  509. She's the one

  510. who shows us

  511. what it looks

  512. like to trust

  513. God.

  514. In verse 6,

  515. she flees.

  516. In verse 7,

  517. we find out

  518. she's near the

  519. border of Egypt

  520. which makes

  521. sense, right?

  522. Remember,

  523. she's an

  524. Egyptian woman.

  525. Of course,

  526. she is fleeing

  527. to head back

  528. home.

  529. It's possible

  530. that she

  531. became part

  532. of Abram

  533. and Sarai's

  534. family back

  535. when they

  536. were in

  537. Egypt.

  538. Remember,

  539. at the end

  540. of chapter

  541. 12.

  542. She's on

  543. the return.

  544. She's going

  545. back to her

  546. home.

  547. Verse 7,

  548. this angel

  549. of the Lord

  550. meets her.

  551. There's a

  552. debate over

  553. the angel.

  554. People ask

  555. questions like,

  556. is the angel

  557. God?

  558. Is the angel

  559. a representative

  560. of God?

  561. I'm just

  562. going to make

  563. it really

  564. simple for

  565. us.

  566. Whatever

  567. the angel

  568. sees,

  569. God

  570. sees.

  571. Whatever

  572. angel

  573. says,

  574. God

  575. says.

  576. Whether

  577. it's God,

  578. whether it's

  579. pre-incarnate

  580. Christ,

  581. whether it's

  582. an angel,

  583. those things

  584. are true,

  585. okay?

  586. Abram and

  587. Sarai have

  588. had a hard

  589. call to

  590. wait.

  591. That's why

  592. Sarai accuses

  593. God.

  594. Verses 2 and

  595. 3,

  596. you haven't

  597. given me a

  598. child.

  599. Hagar

  600. Hagar

  601. also receives

  602. a hard

  603. call.

  604. Verse 9,

  605. the angel

  606. of the

  607. Lord said

  608. to her,

  609. return to

  610. your

  611. mistress

  612. and

  613. submit

  614. to her.

  615. Return to

  616. the woman

  617. who won't

  618. call you

  619. by your

  620. name.

  621. Return

  622. to the

  623. house of

  624. dysfunction

  625. and shame

  626. and anxiety.

  627. return.

  628. It will

  629. not be

  630. a quick

  631. fix.

  632. Return

  633. and just

  634. wait.

  635. Return

  636. to Sarai

  637. who's a

  638. hard

  639. mistress.

  640. Return

  641. to a

  642. place

  643. where

  644. you have

  645. a child

  646. but no

  647. power.

  648. What

  649. does

  650. Hagar

  651. do?

  652. She

  653. takes

  654. God

  655. at his

  656. word

  657. and she

  658. goes

  659. back.

  660. We know

  661. that because

  662. in verses

  663. 15 and

  664. 16 it

  665. tells us

  666. she bore

  667. Abram

  668. a son.

  669. What is

  670. it that's

  671. different

  672. about

  673. Hagar?

  674. Why is

  675. she able

  676. to trust

  677. God

  678. and return?

  679. It's

  680. for one

  681. reason

  682. and one

  683. reason

  684. only.

  685. God

  686. and his

  687. overwhelming

  688. grace.

  689. Remember

  690. I told

  691. you this

  692. passage is

  693. painful

  694. and tender.

  695. It's

  696. painful

  697. because of

  698. human

  699. failing.

  700. It's

  701. tender

  702. because of

  703. God's

  704. mercy.

  705. Verse

  706. seven.

  707. The

  708. angel of

  709. the

  710. Lord

  711. found

  712. her.

  713. Hagar

  714. is not

  715. looking

  716. for God

  717. but God

  718. is looking

  719. for

  720. Hagar.

  721. Verse

  722. eight.

  723. God

  724. addresses

  725. her

  726. by

  727. name.

  728. Hagar

  729. servant

  730. of Sarai

  731. where have

  732. you come

  733. from

  734. and where

  735. are you

  736. going?

  737. this is

  738. the only

  739. time

  740. in the

  741. entirety

  742. of

  743. ancient

  744. Near

  745. Eastern

  746. literature

  747. that a

  748. God

  749. addresses

  750. a woman

  751. by name.

  752. I'm going

  753. to say

  754. that again.

  755. This is

  756. the only

  757. time

  758. in ancient

  759. Near

  760. Eastern

  761. literature

  762. that a

  763. God

  764. addresses

  765. a woman

  766. by

  767. name.

  768. Remember

  769. what Abram

  770. and Sarai

  771. did.

  772. They

  773. couldn't

  774. say

  775. Hagar's

  776. name.

  777. They

  778. could

  779. only

  780. say

  781. servant.

  782. And

  783. the reason

  784. is this

  785. that names

  786. are

  787. reserved

  788. for people

  789. of great

  790. power

  791. and influence

  792. and here

  793. God

  794. comes to

  795. this

  796. Egyptian

  797. woman

  798. who has

  799. no

  800. power

  801. no

  802. influence

  803. is

  804. pregnant

  805. and

  806. stuck

  807. in the

  808. desert.

  809. sees

  810. her

  811. not

  812. as a

  813. servant

  814. but as

  815. a daughter

  816. in need

  817. of help.

  818. Verse 8

  819. he doesn't

  820. just call

  821. her by

  822. name

  823. he gives

  824. her

  825. dignity.

  826. He

  827. engages

  828. her

  829. in

  830. conversation

  831. something

  832. Abram

  833. and Sarai

  834. never

  835. did.

  836. Where

  837. have

  838. you

  839. come

  840. from

  841. and

  842. where

  843. are

  844. you

  845. going?

  846. Hagar

  847. is no

  848. longer

  849. a

  850. one

  851. way

  852. recipient

  853. of

  854. commands

  855. and

  856. orders

  857. she

  858. is a

  859. person

  860. to be

  861. loved

  862. and

  863. engaged.

  864. God

  865. cares

  866. for those

  867. who have

  868. no

  869. power

  870. and no

  871. influence

  872. and he

  873. calls by

  874. name

  875. those

  876. who

  877. others

  878. will

  879. not

  880. name.

  881. God

  882. does

  883. give

  884. her

  885. to

  886. return

  887. because

  888. the

  889. God

  890. who

  891. tells

  892. her

  893. to

  894. return

  895. shows

  896. her

  897. that

  898. he

  899. cares

  900. for

  901. the

  902. powerless

  903. and

  904. the

  905. downtrodden.

  906. God

  907. doesn't

  908. just give

  909. her

  910. dignity

  911. here

  912. though

  913. although

  914. he

  915. does

  916. do

  917. that

  918. he

  919. also

  920. gives

  921. her

  922. great

  923. hope.

  924. Verse

  925. 10

  926. we have

  927. some

  928. practical

  929. promises

  930. here

  931. I

  932. will

  933. surely

  934. multiply

  935. your

  936. offspring

  937. so that

  938. they

  939. cannot

  940. be

  941. numbered

  942. for

  943. multitude.

  944. It's

  945. not just

  946. that God

  947. knows

  948. Hagar's

  949. name

  950. it's

  951. that now

  952. Hagar

  953. has a

  954. future.

  955. It's

  956. not all

  957. lost

  958. it's

  959. not all

  960. in vain

  961. no

  962. she's

  963. going to

  964. return

  965. and wait

  966. for God

  967. to do

  968. what he

  969. has

  970. said

  971. he

  972. will

  973. do.

  974. It's

  975. not a

  976. dead

  977. end

  978. it's

  979. a

  980. future

  981. with

  982. many

  983. children.

  984. None

  985. of this

  986. by the

  987. way

  988. goes

  989. over

  990. Hagar's

  991. head.

  992. Verse

  993. 13

  994. she

  995. called

  996. the name

  997. of the

  998. Lord

  999. who

  1000. spoke

  1001. to

  1002. her

  1003. you

  1004. are

  1005. a

  1006. God

  1007. of

  1008. seeing.

  1009. Truly

  1010. here

  1011. I

  1012. have

  1013. seen

  1014. him

  1015. who

  1016. looks

  1017. after

  1018. me.

  1019. Brothers

  1020. and

  1021. sisters

  1022. when

  1023. we

  1024. know

  1025. and

  1026. believe

  1027. that

  1028. God

  1029. looks

  1030. after

  1031. us

  1032. we

  1033. can

  1034. wait

  1035. as

  1036. long

  1037. as

  1038. we

  1039. need

  1040. for

  1041. him

  1042. to

  1043. fulfill

  1044. his

  1045. promise.

  1046. I

  1047. have

  1048. seen

  1049. him

  1050. who

  1051. looks

  1052. after

  1053. me.

  1054. Verse

  1055. 15

  1056. she

  1057. goes

  1058. back.

  1059. She

  1060. goes

  1061. back

  1062. because

  1063. God

  1064. has

  1065. given

  1066. her

  1067. dignity

  1068. and

  1069. given

  1070. her

  1071. a

  1072. future.

  1073. Of

  1074. course

  1075. it's

  1076. going to

  1077. be

  1078. normal

  1079. life

  1080. right?

  1081. We

  1082. have

  1083. this

  1084. great

  1085. mountaintop

  1086. moment

  1087. and

  1088. it's

  1089. also

  1090. not

  1091. the

  1092. end

  1093. of

  1094. Hagar's

  1095. struggles.

  1096. Her

  1097. problems

  1098. aren't

  1099. all

  1100. solved.

  1101. Her

  1102. relationship

  1103. with

  1104. Sarai

  1105. will

  1106. still

  1107. be

  1108. strained.

  1109. In

  1110. fact,

  1111. if you

  1112. stick

  1113. with

  1114. us

  1115. for

  1116. a

  1117. couple

  1118. more

  1119. chapters,

  1120. you're

  1121. going to

  1122. see

  1123. that

  1124. things

  1125. for

  1126. Hagar

  1127. get

  1128. worse.

  1129. But

  1130. she's

  1131. no

  1132. longer

  1133. alone.

  1134. And

  1135. that

  1136. is

  1137. enough.

  1138. Christian,

  1139. the

  1140. Lord

  1141. calls

  1142. you

  1143. by

  1144. name

  1145. as

  1146. well.

  1147. When

  1148. people

  1149. look at

  1150. you,

  1151. they

  1152. may

  1153. see

  1154. all

  1155. sorts

  1156. of

  1157. things

  1158. first.

  1159. They

  1160. may

  1161. look

  1162. at

  1163. you

  1164. and

  1165. see

  1166. your

  1167. wealth

  1168. or

  1169. your

  1170. poverty.

  1171. They

  1172. may

  1173. see

  1174. your

  1175. power

  1176. or

  1177. your

  1178. lack

  1179. of

  1180. power.

  1181. They

  1182. may

  1183. see

  1184. your

  1185. status

  1186. or

  1187. your

  1188. health

  1189. or

  1190. your

  1191. unhealth.

  1192. The

  1193. Lord

  1194. sees

  1195. you

  1196. as

  1197. his

  1198. children.

  1199. He

  1200. sees

  1201. you

  1202. as

  1203. his

  1204. people.

  1205. And

  1206. I

  1207. don't

  1208. just

  1209. say

  1210. that

  1211. as a

  1212. sentimental

  1213. thing.

  1214. I

  1215. say

  1216. it

  1217. because

  1218. it's

  1219. true.

  1220. And

  1221. I

  1222. know

  1223. it's

  1224. true

  1225. because

  1226. our

  1227. Lord

  1228. Jesus

  1229. says

  1230. these

  1231. things

  1232. in

  1233. the

  1234. Gospels.

  1235. Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  1236. chapter

  1237. 10

  1238. rejoice

  1239. that

  1240. your

  1241. names

  1242. are

  1243. written

  1244. in

  1245. heaven.

  1246. John

    John 10 chapter mention

  1247. chapter

  1248. 10

  1249. I

  1250. am

  1251. the

  1252. good

  1253. shepherd.

  1254. I

  1255. know

  1256. my

  1257. own

  1258. and

  1259. my

  1260. own

  1261. know

  1262. me.

  1263. He

  1264. doesn't

  1265. see

  1266. first

  1267. your

  1268. stereotypes

  1269. or your

  1270. failures.

  1271. Doesn't

  1272. see you

  1273. first

  1274. as a

  1275. soldier

  1276. or a

  1277. civilian.

  1278. Doesn't

  1279. see you

  1280. as

  1281. someone

  1282. who's

  1283. old

  1284. or

  1285. young.

  1286. He

  1287. sees

  1288. and

  1289. knows

  1290. your

  1291. name.

  1292. If

  1293. you're

  1294. not a

  1295. Christian

  1296. I

  1297. imagine

  1298. you

  1299. know

  1300. what

  1301. it's

  1302. like

  1303. to

  1304. be

  1305. known

  1306. only

  1307. by

  1308. your

  1309. class

  1310. or

  1311. your

  1312. abilities

  1313. by

  1314. labels

  1315. that

  1316. people

  1317. put

  1318. on

  1319. you.

  1320. The

  1321. Gospel

  1322. is the

  1323. only

  1324. thing

  1325. that

  1326. offers

  1327. you

  1328. freedom

  1329. from

  1330. that.

  1331. God

  1332. sees

  1333. you

  1334. even

  1335. if

  1336. the

  1337. world

  1338. doesn't.

  1339. He

  1340. sees

  1341. you

  1342. even

  1343. if

  1344. you

  1345. have

  1346. nothing

  1347. spectacular

  1348. to

  1349. offer.

  1350. Verse

  1351. 7

  1352. we

  1353. saw

  1354. that

  1355. God

  1356. pursues

  1357. Hagar.

  1358. Of course

  1359. this is

  1360. an angel

  1361. in one

  1362. day in

  1363. the

  1364. desert.

  1365. God

  1366. pursues

  1367. us

  1368. even

  1369. more.

  1370. We

  1371. know

  1372. that.

  1373. We've

  1374. seen

  1375. his

  1376. pursuit

  1377. for

  1378. us

  1379. in

  1380. Jesus

  1381. Christ.

  1382. Romans

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  1383. chapter

  1384. 5

  1385. tells

  1386. us

  1387. but

  1388. God

  1389. chose

  1390. his

  1391. love

  1392. for

  1393. us

  1394. in

  1395. that

  1396. while

  1397. we

  1398. were

  1399. sinners

  1400. Christ

  1401. died

  1402. for

  1403. us.

  1404. He

  1405. sent

  1406. his

  1407. son

  1408. like

  1409. he

  1410. sent

  1411. the

  1412. angel

  1413. to

  1414. Hagar

  1415. when

  1416. we

  1417. weren't

  1418. looking

  1419. for

  1420. him.

  1421. But

  1422. he

  1423. was

  1424. looking

  1425. for

  1426. us.

  1427. Just

  1428. like

  1429. he

  1430. promised

  1431. Hagar

  1432. a

  1433. future

  1434. Christian

  1435. he's

  1436. done

  1437. the

  1438. same

  1439. for

  1440. you.

  1441. Why

  1442. do

  1443. we

  1444. do

  1445. things

  1446. God's

  1447. way

  1448. and

  1449. not

  1450. the

  1451. easy

  1452. way?

  1453. What

  1454. allows

  1455. us

  1456. to

  1457. wait

  1458. for

  1459. 10

  1460. years

  1461. and

  1462. even

  1463. more?

  1464. We

  1465. do

  1466. it

  1467. for

  1468. two

  1469. reasons.

  1470. God

  1471. knows

  1472. our

  1473. name.

  1474. He's

  1475. given

  1476. us

  1477. a

  1478. future

  1479. and

  1480. a

  1481. hope.

  1482. We

  1483. might

  1484. put it

  1485. this

  1486. way.

  1487. I

  1488. will

  1489. honor

  1490. him

  1491. for

  1492. this

  1493. I

  1494. know.

  1495. I

  1496. belong

  1497. to

  1498. the

  1499. Lord.

  1500. I

  1501. am

  1502. not

  1503. my

  1504. own.

  1505. Let's

  1506. pray.

  1507. Our

  1508. Father in

  1509. heaven,

  1510. we do

  1511. thank you

  1512. and praise

  1513. you that

  1514. we belong

  1515. to you,

  1516. that you

  1517. look for

  1518. us even

  1519. when we're

  1520. not looking

  1521. for you.

  1522. in the

  1523. midst of

  1524. our

  1525. failure

  1526. and

  1527. mistakes,

  1528. you meet

  1529. us with

  1530. great

  1531. grace.

  1532. We

  1533. ask that

  1534. you'd

  1535. remind us

  1536. of that

  1537. truth,

  1538. you'd

  1539. drive it

  1540. deep

  1541. into

  1542. our

  1543. hearts,

  1544. that

  1545. it

  1546. would

  1547. cause

  1548. us

  1549. to

  1550. follow

  1551. you

  1552. no

  1553. matter

  1554. what.

  1555. We

  1556. ask

  1557. these

  1558. things

  1559. in the

  1560. mighty

  1561. name

  1562. of

  1563. Jesus

  1564. Christ.

  1565. Amen.
