  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  4. ! And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here.

  7. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  8. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  9. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  10. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  11. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  12. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  13. The book of Genesis first tells the origin of the world in chapters 1 through 11.

  14. And then it tells the origin of God's people, the story of Israel, in chapters 11 through 50.

  15. We are focusing only on chapters 11 through 25 because we are in the Abraham story.

  16. And we're looking at Abraham for two reasons.

  17. First, because we are preparing to go back into our series in the book of Romans.

  18. Romans chapter 4 is about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  19. Second, it allows us to ask the question, what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  20. Last week we were in Genesis chapter 16, which I told you was one of the most painful and tender passages in Scripture.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  21. Painful because of human failing and tender because of God's great mercy and grace.

  22. This week we're in chapter 17.

  23. There have been 13 years of silence since the end of the previous chapter.

  24. So we have a large gap between 16 and 17.

  25. 17 is a follow-up in many ways to chapter 15.

  26. Because both 15 and 17 cover God's covenant.

  27. When we talk about covenants, we are always talking about the nature of our relationship with God.

  28. That's the realm that we're in when we have covenant talk.

  29. Chapter 15, we ask this question, what is the foundation of our relationship with God?

  30. You remember the foundation is that we are His children.

  31. That will never change.

  32. Chapter 17 is a different question, not what is the foundation of our relationship,

  33. but what does it mean to be in a relationship with God?

  34. How does that relationship change and form us?

  35. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  36. You can turn on your phone.

  37. You can turn in your worship guide.

  38. You can open your Bible.

  39. And no matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  40. Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  41. Every word of God proves true.

  42. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  43. And so that's why we read now chapter 17, starting at verse 1.

  44. When Abram was 99 years old, the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him,

  45. I am God Almighty.

  46. Walk before me and be blameless,

  47. that I may make my covenant between me and you,

  48. and may multiply you greatly.

  49. Then Abram fell on his face,

  50. and God said to him,

  51. Behold, my covenant is with you,

  52. and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations.

  53. No longer shall your name be called Abram,

  54. but your name shall be Abraham,

  55. for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.

  56. I will make you exceedingly fruitful,

  57. and I will make you into nations,

  58. and kings shall come from you.

  59. And I will establish my covenant between me and you,

  60. and your offspring after you throughout their generations,

  61. for an everlasting covenant,

  62. to be God to you and to your offspring after you.

  63. And I will give to you and to your offspring after you

  64. the land of your sojournings,

  65. all the land of Canaan,

  66. for an everlasting possession,

  67. and I will be their God.

  68. Verse 9.

  69. And God said to Abraham,

  70. As for you, you shall keep my covenant,

  71. you and your offspring after you throughout their generations.

  72. This is my covenant,

  73. which you shall keep between me and you

  74. and your offspring after you.

  75. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

  76. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins,

  77. and it shall be a sign of a covenant between me and you.

  78. He who is eight days old among you shall be circumcised.

  79. Every male throughout your generations,

  80. whether born in your house or bought with your money,

  81. from any foreigner who is not of your offspring,

  82. both he who is born in your house

  83. and he who is bought with your money,

  84. shall surely be circumcised.

  85. So shall my covenant be in your flesh,

  86. an everlasting covenant.

  87. Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised

  88. in the flesh of his foreskin

  89. shall be cut off from his people.

  90. He has broken my covenant.

  91. Verse 15.

  92. And God said to Abraham,

  93. As for Sarah, your wife,

  94. you shall not call her name Sarah,

  95. but Sarah shall be her name.

  96. I will bless her,

  97. and moreover I will give you a son by her.

  98. I will bless her,

  99. and she shall become nations.

  100. Kings of peoples shall come from her.

  101. Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed

  102. and said to himself,

  103. Shall a child be born to a man

  104. who is a hundred years old?

  105. Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old,

  106. bear a child?

  107. Verse 18.

  108. And Abraham said to God,

  109. Oh, that Ishmael might live before you.

  110. God said, No,

  111. but Sarah, your wife,

  112. shall bear you a son,

  113. and you shall call his name Isaac.

  114. I will establish my covenant with him

  115. as an everlasting covenant

  116. for his offspring after him.

  117. As for Ishmael, I have heard you.

  118. Behold, I have blessed him

  119. and will make him fruitful

  120. and multiply him greatly.

  121. He shall father twelve princes,

  122. and I will make him into a great nation.

  123. But I will establish my covenant with Isaac,

  124. whom Sarah shall bear to you

  125. at this time next year.

  126. Verse 22.

  127. When he had finished talking with him,

  128. God went up from Abraham.

  129. Then Abraham took Ishmael his son

  130. and all those born in his house

  131. or bought with his money,

  132. every male among the men of Abraham's house,

  133. and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins

  134. that very day,

  135. as God had said to him.

  136. Abraham was ninety-nine years old

  137. when he was circumcised

  138. in the flesh of his foreskin.

  139. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old

  140. when he was circumcised

  141. in the flesh of his foreskin.

  142. That very day,

  143. Abraham and his son Ishmael were circumcised.

  144. And all the men of his house,

  145. those born in the house,

  146. and those bought with money from a foreigner,

  147. were circumcised with him.

  148. I invite you to pray with me

  149. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  150. Our Father in heaven,

  151. we do thank you again for your word,

  152. that you do speak to us

  153. in words that we can understand.

  154. We ask that you would do that this morning,

  155. that you would open our eyes

  156. to what you have for us,

  157. that you would speak to us,

  158. you'd teach us,

  159. you would grow our love for you

  160. and our obedience as well.

  161. We thank you that we don't worry this morning

  162. about whether we've earned

  163. or deserved these things.

  164. We know that we haven't,

  165. and so we simply ask for them

  166. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  167. Amen.

  168. Amen.

  169. In April of 2016,

  170. there was a news article that came out

  171. that threatened to break the internet,

  172. as they say,

  173. because the British government

  174. had commissioned a research vessel

  175. for polar research.

  176. So this vessel was supposed to study

  177. global warming and climate change,

  178. polar science, rising sea levels,

  179. and they decided they had a great idea

  180. that they would find the name,

  181. they'd pick the name of this ship

  182. through an online poll.

  183. And so there were a variety of names

  184. that rose to the surface in this.

  185. One of them was Ice Ice Baby.

  186. Another one was I Like Big Boats

  187. and I Cannot Lie.

  188. Science with three exclamation points.

  189. Clifford the Big Red Boat.

  190. None of those I've told you about

  191. won the poll, though.

  192. The winner was this,

  193. Bodie McBoatface.

  194. And so the question that came up was this,

  195. are they going to honor the poll?

  196. Will they do what they said

  197. they were going to do?

  198. Will the British government

  199. have an RRS,

  200. Bodie McBoatface?

  201. And the answer was this,

  202. no.

  203. British government went back on their word.

  204. They didn't do what they said

  205. they would do.

  206. They didn't honor the process.

  207. No, instead they decided

  208. they're going to name the ship

  209. after a natural scientist.

  210. And so it was named after

  211. David Attenborough.

  212. It makes sense, right?

  213. It's fitting.

  214. It makes sense that a ship

  215. devoted to natural science

  216. would be named after

  217. a natural scientist.

  218. Principle is this,

  219. names really matter.

  220. names really matter.

  221. You actually can't name

  222. a research vessel

  223. by the British government,

  224. Bodie McBoatface.

  225. Because the name of the ship,

  226. right, it needs to reflect

  227. the ship's purpose

  228. and mission.

  229. Names shape

  230. and show

  231. our identity.

  232. Parents, you know this.

  233. When you named

  234. your child,

  235. there's a good chance

  236. that name reflected

  237. your hopes for them, right?

  238. Especially if you choose

  239. a name from the Bible.

  240. Man, I like this character

  241. and what they show

  242. and I want my son

  243. or daughter to show that.

  244. Wives, when you got married,

  245. maybe you took

  246. a new last name, right?

  247. Because there's a change there

  248. in identity.

  249. That's what's happening here

  250. in chapter 17.

  251. Verses 4 and 5,

  252. we go from Abram,

  253. which means father,

  254. to Abraham,

  255. which means father

  256. of many nations.

  257. There's a change.

  258. Yes, Abram's a father.

  259. He hasn't been

  260. for most of his life.

  261. He has one son,

  262. Ishmael.

  263. That's the present.

  264. The future is going

  265. to be something much greater.

  266. The father not of nations,

  267. of a nation,

  268. many nations.

  269. Same thing happens

  270. with Sarai to Sarah,

  271. verse 15.

  272. Now, there's a vowel change

  273. that happens.

  274. That's the difference here.

  275. And what's hard about this

  276. is that Sarai and Sarah

  277. actually mean the same thing.

  278. So they both mean princess.

  279. Our best guess, then,

  280. is that the first name

  281. reflects the past,

  282. that Sarah came

  283. from this royal family.

  284. The new name

  285. reflects the future,

  286. that she will be

  287. the mother of kings.

  288. Note that in verse 16,

  289. it's said in the context

  290. of the name change,

  291. she shall become nations,

  292. kings of peoples

  293. shall come from her.

  294. By the way,

  295. this is the first,

  296. but not the only mention

  297. of kings in Genesis.

  298. The first time we're told

  299. that the kings

  300. are going to come

  301. from Abraham and Sarah.

  302. And so we see also,

  303. not just this identity marker,

  304. but there's a decisive break

  305. from the past here.

  306. We knew Abram and Sarah,

  307. they were a couple

  308. with no kids

  309. wandering around

  310. in the desert.

  311. Now we're introduced

  312. to Abraham and Sarah.

  313. And we might say

  314. in a certain sense

  315. they're new characters

  316. because the new names matter.

  317. What does it mean

  318. to be in a relationship

  319. with God?

  320. How does that relationship

  321. change us?

  322. First answer is this.

  323. It means that God

  324. gives us a new identity.

  325. It means that God

  326. gives us a new identity.

  327. Now it doesn't mean

  328. that your name will change,

  329. although we do call

  330. ourselves Christians.

  331. It does mean we get

  332. a new purpose,

  333. a new mission,

  334. a new life.

  335. I had a job interview

  336. many, many years ago

  337. and I think

  338. it was a large interview.

  339. It was me

  340. and a bunch of people

  341. around this big table

  342. and I think

  343. one of the individuals

  344. that interviewed

  345. had gone on the internet

  346. and searched questions

  347. to ask in a job interview

  348. and got in probably

  349. one of the worst lists possible.

  350. And so she looked at me

  351. and she said,

  352. how would you describe yourself

  353. in one word?

  354. Which is extremely relevant

  355. to getting a job.

  356. And I'm terrible

  357. at questions like that

  358. and really the only answer

  359. I could think of

  360. was the one I gave.

  361. I said, well,

  362. redeemed.

  363. That's the Christian

  364. in one word.

  365. What is one word

  366. that describes you

  367. as a Christian?

  368. Redeemed.

  369. You've been bought by God.

  370. You've a new identity.

  371. So if you're a Christian,

  372. what is most true about you?

  373. What is most true about you

  374. is not that you are a man

  375. or a woman

  376. or a boy or a girl.

  377. It is not that you are wealthy

  378. or poor.

  379. It is not your choices

  380. or your parents' choices.

  381. It is not your education

  382. or your lack of education.

  383. I'm not saying those things

  384. don't matter.

  385. I'm not saying they're insignificant.

  386. They are not

  387. what is most true

  388. about you.

  389. They are not

  390. what is most important.

  391. What is most important

  392. about you

  393. is this,

  394. that you belong

  395. body and soul

  396. to your faithful Savior,

  397. Jesus Christ.

  398. He is fully paid

  399. for all your sins

  400. with his precious blood

  401. and he has set you free

  402. from the tyranny

  403. of the devil.

  404. He also watches over you

  405. in such a way

  406. that not a hair

  407. can fall from your head

  408. without the will

  409. of your Father in heaven.

  410. In fact,

  411. all things must work together

  412. for your salvation.

  413. Christian,

  414. that is what is most true

  415. about you.

  416. That is what is first.

  417. Of course,

  418. that brings to us

  419. both great humility

  420. and great hope.

  421. Humility,

  422. if we look to all

  423. those other things,

  424. if we think,

  425. I'm fine

  426. because I'm smart

  427. or wealthy

  428. or powerful,

  429. brings great hope

  430. if you don't have

  431. any of those things.

  432. What does the world say

  433. if you don't have

  434. any of those things?

  435. Either hustle

  436. or give up.

  437. The Bible says

  438. something quite different.

  439. If you don't have

  440. those things,

  441. you still belong,

  442. body and soul,

  443. to Jesus Christ.

  444. Brothers and sisters,

  445. we do not make

  446. our own identity.

  447. That is the great lie

  448. of our current age.

  449. The great lie

  450. of our current age

  451. is that it is all

  452. up to you

  453. to figure out

  454. exactly who you are

  455. and what that means.

  456. That's actually

  457. too great of a weight

  458. for you to carry

  459. as a human.

  460. That's actually more

  461. than you were meant

  462. to figure out.

  463. It's like that quote

  464. that I told you

  465. from a few years ago

  466. by Taylor Swift.

  467. I have some good news.

  468. It's totally up to you.

  469. I have some terrifying news.

  470. It's totally up to you.

  471. Christian,

  472. I have some good news.

  473. It is not at all

  474. up to you.

  475. We don't make

  476. our identity.

  477. We receive it.

  478. What do you believe

  479. is most true

  480. about you?

  481. If it is something

  482. other than

  483. the fact that

  484. you have been redeemed,

  485. you have lost

  486. the plot.

  487. That is what

  488. is most important.

  489. I also don't want you

  490. to miss that there

  491. is a decisive break

  492. from the past here.

  493. There's, of course,

  494. many things that have

  495. happened to Abraham

  496. and Sarah,

  497. and there's now

  498. a new future.

  499. You,

  500. if you're a Christian,

  501. have a decisive break

  502. from the past

  503. as well.

  504. I do not mean

  505. that the past

  506. does not affect you.

  507. Remember,

  508. I had a professor

  509. in seminary.

  510. He said,

  511. there are things

  512. that have happened

  513. to me in this life

  514. that I will

  515. never get over.

  516. Meaning,

  517. the impact of that

  518. is going to travel

  519. with me until I die.

  520. And so,

  521. I'm not saying

  522. the past doesn't

  523. affect you.

  524. What I am saying

  525. is this.

  526. It cannot

  527. define you.

  528. It cannot

  529. define you.

  530. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  531. chapter 5

  532. tells us,

  533. therefore,

  534. if anyone

  535. is in Christ,

  536. he is a new

  537. creation.

  538. The old

  539. has passed away,

  540. the new

  541. has come.

  542. If you belong

  543. to God,

  544. there is

  545. nothing else

  546. that gets

  547. the final

  548. word on you.

  549. If you belong

  550. to God,

  551. there is

  552. nothing else

  553. that gets

  554. the final

  555. word

  556. on you.

  557. What did we sing?

  558. Verse 3,

  559. this is on page 4.

  560. And if

  561. he has

  562. redeemed me,

  563. I am not

  564. my own.

  565. The measure

  566. of my worth

  567. is his love

  568. alone.

  569. He declares

  570. my standing

  571. and he declares

  572. my state.

  573. So,

  574. I will know

  575. myself

  576. by the

  577. what?

  578. By the name

  579. he

  580. gave.

  581. If you are

  582. cynical,

  583. you might

  584. be thinking,

  585. man,

  586. that sounds

  587. really great,

  588. Matthew,

  589. except you

  590. totally skipped

  591. verses 1

  592. and 2.

  593. What does

  594. God say to

  595. Abraham in

  596. verses 1

  597. and 2?

  598. He says,

  599. walk before

  600. me and

  601. be

  602. blameless.

  603. Man,

  604. that kind of

  605. sounds like a

  606. bait and switch,

  607. right?

  608. Sounds like

  609. you have to

  610. earn something

  611. from God.

  612. Yes,

  613. get those

  614. new names

  615. and there's

  616. a new

  617. weight that

  618. comes along

  619. with it.

  620. Kind of

  621. sounds,

  622. right?

  623. You have

  624. to earn

  625. something

  626. from God.

  627. Then in

  628. verses 9

  629. through 13,

  630. there's all

  631. these instructions

  632. about circumcision.

  633. Verse 14,

  634. the threat

  635. of punishment.

  636. If you

  637. do not

  638. circumcise,

  639. you'll be

  640. cut off.

  641. So,

  642. how is

  643. this new

  644. identity,

  645. how is

  646. that a

  647. good thing

  648. if it

  649. also comes

  650. with this

  651. requirement,

  652. this demand

  653. to be

  654. blameless?

  655. To understand

  656. that,

  657. we've got

  658. to grasp

  659. a couple

  660. of things.

  661. First,

  662. we have

  663. to understand

  664. what is

  665. meant by

  666. a covenant.

  667. The word

  668. covenant

  669. appears 13

  670. times in

  671. this passage,

  672. and there's

  673. many different

  674. ways of

  675. defining it.

  676. The definition

  677. I like

  678. best shows

  679. up on the

  680. back of

  681. your worship

  682. guide.

  683. It's from

  684. a pastor

  685. who says

  686. this,

  687. a covenant

  688. is a

  689. stunning

  690. blend

  691. of both

  692. law

  693. and love.

  694. It is

  695. more intimate

  696. and loving

  697. than a mere

  698. contract,

  699. more binding

  700. and accountable

  701. than a mere

  702. relationship.

  703. God's calling

  704. Abraham into

  705. this relationship.

  706. It's a relationship

  707. that has intimacy

  708. in it.

  709. It's also a

  710. relationship that

  711. has things that

  712. are binding

  713. and accountable.

  714. The second

  715. thing then

  716. is God

  717. is not,

  718. Abraham is not

  719. earning God's

  720. blessing here.

  721. What's being

  722. presented to us

  723. is the logic

  724. of relationships.

  725. That blessing

  726. requires certain

  727. activities.

  728. Okay,

  729. blessing

  730. requires

  731. certain

  732. activities.

  733. You'll see

  734. this on page

  735. seven of your

  736. worship guide.

  737. Obedience

  738. then is the

  739. means of

  740. living within

  741. the sphere

  742. of blessing

  743. and enjoying

  744. it.

  745. Obedience

  746. is never

  747. the means

  748. of earning

  749. or deserving

  750. the blessing.

  751. In other words,

  752. you never earn

  753. God's blessings.

  754. You do have

  755. to be in the

  756. right place

  757. to receive

  758. them.

  759. Okay,

  760. you don't earn

  761. God's blessings.

  762. You do have

  763. to be in the

  764. right place

  765. to receive

  766. them.

  767. So think

  768. about it

  769. this way.

  770. Today is

  771. July 6th.

  772. Two days

  773. ago was

  774. July 4th.

  775. If you

  776. were invited

  777. to a

  778. cookout

  779. and you

  780. went,

  781. you received

  782. a blessing.

  783. Right?

  784. Probably

  785. you got a

  786. hamburger

  787. or a hot

  788. dog.

  789. did you

  790. earn

  791. the

  792. burger?

  793. No.

  794. Would

  795. you have

  796. received

  797. the

  798. burger

  799. had you

  800. not

  801. shown

  802. up

  803. to

  804. the

  805. cookout?

  806. No.

  807. You had

  808. to be

  809. within

  810. the sphere

  811. of blessing.

  812. Right?

  813. You had

  814. to be

  815. within

  816. the

  817. proximity

  818. of the

  819. grill.

  820. Your

  821. invitation

  822. was not

  823. based on

  824. merit.

  825. The host

  826. did not

  827. say,

  828. come over

  829. to my

  830. house

  831. because

  832. you

  833. have

  834. performed

  835. so

  836. well.

  837. Come

  838. over to

  839. my

  840. house.

  841. You

  842. showed

  843. up.

  844. You

  845. didn't

  846. earn

  847. anything.

  848. But

  849. you

  850. had

  851. to

  852. be

  853. there

  854. to

  855. receive

  856. it.

  857. Kids,

  858. you

  859. know the

  860. same

  861. thing.

  862. If

  863. you

  864. want

  865. to

  866. receive

  867. your

  868. parents'

  869. wisdom

  870. and

  871. blessing

  872. and

  873. guidance,

  874. what

  875. do

  876. you

  877. have

  878. to

  879. do?

  880. You

  881. don't

  882. have

  883. to

  884. earn

  885. it.

  886. It's

  887. given

  888. to

  889. you

  890. freely,

  891. right?

  892. You're

  893. their

  894. child.

  895. You

  896. do

  897. have

  898. to

  899. show

  900. up

  901. for

  902. it.

  903. You

  904. do

  905. have

  906. to

  907. be

  908. within

  909. the

  910. same

  911. thing

  912. here

  913. with

  914. Abraham

  915. and

  916. Sarah.

  917. Do

  918. they

  919. earn

  920. anything

  921. that

  922. God

  923. has

  924. promised

  925. to

  926. them

  927. to

  928. become

  929. a

  930. great

  931. nation?

  932. Of

  933. course

  934. not.

  935. Do

  936. they

  937. have

  938. to

  939. do

  940. something?

  941. Yes.

  942. It

  943. actually

  944. turns

  945. out

  946. there

  947. are

  948. certain

  949. things

  950. you

  951. have

  952. to

  953. do

  954. if

  955. you

  956. want

  957. to

  958. have

  959. a

  960. child.

  961. Abraham

  962. and

  963. Sarah

  964. are

  965. going

  966. to

  967. have

  968. to

  969. do

  970. those

  971. things.

  972. They

  973. don't

  974. earn

  975. the

  976. blessing.

  977. They

  978. show

  979. up

  980. to

  981. know

  982. what's

  983. also

  984. included.

  985. The

  986. Lord

  987. appeared

  988. to

  989. Abraham

  990. and

  991. said

  992. to

  993. him,

  994. I

  995. am

  996. God

  997. Almighty.

  998. The

  999. Hebrew

  1000. word

  1001. here

  1002. is

  1003. El

  1004. Shaddai.

  1005. El

  1006. Shaddai

  1007. talks

  1008. about

  1009. God's

  1010. great

  1011. power

  1012. over

  1013. creation.

  1014. In

  1015. other

  1016. words,

  1017. God

  1018. is

  1019. saying

  1020. these

  1021. great

  1022. things

  1023. are

  1024. going

  1025. to

  1026. happen

  1027. to

  1028. you

  1029. because

  1030. I

  1031. will

  1032. do

  1033. it.

  1034. Verse

  1035. two,

  1036. I

  1037. will

  1038. make

  1039. the

  1040. covenant.

  1041. Verses

  1042. five

  1043. through

  1044. seven,

  1045. I

  1046. will,

  1047. I

  1048. will.

  1049. Of

  1050. course,

  1051. that's

  1052. going to

  1053. have to

  1054. happen,

  1055. right?

  1056. God

  1057. was not

  1058. in the

  1059. ancient

  1060. Near

  1061. East

  1062. looking

  1063. for

  1064. the

  1065. most

  1066. powerful

  1067. or

  1068. fertile

  1069. couple,

  1070. and

  1071. if

  1072. he

  1073. were,

  1074. he

  1075. would

  1076. not

  1077. have

  1078. chosen

  1079. Abraham

  1080. and

  1081. Sarah.

  1082. God

  1083. loves

  1084. to

  1085. use

  1086. the

  1087. foolish

  1088. and

  1089. the

  1090. weak.

  1091. Christian,

  1092. God

  1093. loves

  1094. to

  1095. use

  1096. you.

  1097. Gives

  1098. him

  1099. great

  1100. honor

  1101. and

  1102. glory.

  1103. And so

  1104. what does

  1105. it mean

  1106. to be

  1107. in a

  1108. relationship

  1109. with

  1110. God?

  1111. How

  1112. does

  1113. it

  1114. change

  1115. us?

  1116. We've

  1117. seen

  1118. that it

  1119. gives

  1120. us

  1121. a

  1122. new

  1123. identity.

  1124. We

  1125. also

  1126. see

  1127. it

  1128. gives

  1129. us

  1130. new

  1131. responsibilities.

  1132. Yes,

  1133. Abraham

  1134. has a

  1135. new

  1136. name

  1137. and

  1138. he's

  1139. called

  1140. to

  1141. new

  1142. things.

  1143. We

  1144. have

  1145. two

  1146. commands

  1147. to

  1148. obedience

  1149. here.

  1150. There's

  1151. a

  1152. general

  1153. and

  1154. a

  1155. specific.

  1156. We're

  1157. going

  1158. to

  1159. look

  1160. at

  1161. both.

  1162. The

  1163. general,

  1164. verse

  1165. one,

  1166. walk

  1167. before

  1168. me

  1169. and

  1170. be

  1171. blameless.

  1172. The

  1173. specific,

  1174. verse

  1175. two,

  1176. is that

  1177. Abraham

  1178. would

  1179. perform

  1180. this

  1181. circumcision.

  1182. You

  1183. might

  1184. be

  1185. wondering,

  1186. why

  1187. in the

  1188. world

  1189. is

  1190. circumcision

  1191. the

  1192. sign

  1193. that's

  1194. presented

  1195. here?

  1196. This

  1197. passage

  1198. does

  1199. not

  1200. answer

  1201. that

  1202. question

  1203. for

  1204. us.

  1205. There's

  1206. all

  1207. kinds

  1208. of

  1209. theories

  1210. and

  1211. conjectures.

  1212. What I

  1213. want to

  1214. point

  1215. out

  1216. is

  1217. simply

  1218. what

  1219. we

  1220. see

  1221. here

  1222. in

  1223. these

  1224. verses.

  1225. We

  1226. find

  1227. out

  1228. two

  1229. things.

  1230. Verse

  1231. 13,

  1232. circumcision

  1233. is the

  1234. sign

  1235. because

  1236. it's

  1237. a

  1238. permanent

  1239. sign

  1240. of a

  1241. permanent

  1242. covenant.

  1243. So

  1244. shall

  1245. my

  1246. covenant

  1247. be in

  1248. your

  1249. flesh

  1250. an

  1251. everlasting

  1252. covenant.

  1253. Permanent

  1254. sign

  1255. of a

  1256. permanent

  1257. covenant.

  1258. We

  1259. find out

  1260. also in

  1261. verse

  1262. 14

  1263. the

  1264. punishment

  1265. and

  1266. the

  1267. punishment

  1268. gets at

  1269. the

  1270. purpose.

  1271. The

  1272. meaning

  1273. here.

  1274. If

  1275. the

  1276. punishment

  1277. is being

  1278. cut off

  1279. from the

  1280. community,

  1281. what

  1282. must be

  1283. part of

  1284. the

  1285. meaning

  1286. of

  1287. circumcision

  1288. if not

  1289. membership

  1290. in the

  1291. community?

  1292. It's the

  1293. same thing

  1294. we see

  1295. in

  1296. baptism.

  1297. The

  1298. emphasis

  1299. in this

  1300. passage

  1301. though is

  1302. not on

  1303. the

  1304. meaning

  1305. of

  1306. circumcision.

  1307. The

  1308. emphasis

  1309. is on

  1310. obedience.

  1311. Is

  1312. Abraham

  1313. going to

  1314. do

  1315. what God

  1316. has

  1317. called

  1318. him

  1319. to

  1320. do?

  1321. Especially

  1322. something

  1323. so

  1324. painful.

  1325. When I

  1326. was a

  1327. teacher

  1328. many years

  1329. ago at a

  1330. Christian

  1331. school,

  1332. I was

  1333. teaching

  1334. ninth

  1335. graders

  1336. and we

  1337. went

  1338. through the

  1339. book of

  1340. Genesis

  1341. together

  1342. and this

  1343. sweet

  1344. ninth grade

  1345. boy,

  1346. when we

  1347. got to

  1348. Genesis

  1349. 17,

  1350. raised his

  1351. hand and

  1352. he said,

  1353. what is

  1354. circumcision?

  1355. And I

  1356. said,

  1357. you know

  1358. what?

  1359. That's a

  1360. great question

  1361. for you to

  1362. ask your

  1363. parents at

  1364. home.

  1365. Came back

  1366. to the next

  1367. class and

  1368. every time

  1369. circumcision

  1370. came up

  1371. after that,

  1372. he would

  1373. just put

  1374. his head

  1375. in his

  1376. hands and

  1377. go like

  1378. this.

  1379. The

  1380. ninth grade

  1381. girls would

  1382. laugh at

  1383. him.

  1384. Why?

  1385. This is not

  1386. an easy

  1387. command.

  1388. God is

  1389. demanding

  1390. something very

  1391. serious from

  1392. Abraham.

  1393. The narrator

  1394. of Genesis

  1395. is very

  1396. skilled and

  1397. so the

  1398. question in

  1399. the mind of

  1400. the ancient

  1401. Near Eastern

  1402. reader is,

  1403. is Abraham

  1404. actually going

  1405. to do it?

  1406. There's this

  1407. suspense that

  1408. the narrator

  1409. is building.

  1410. Verse 14

  1411. is when the

  1412. punishment is

  1413. laid out

  1414. and then we

  1415. have to wait.

  1416. Right?

  1417. We have to

  1418. wait throughout

  1419. the rest of

  1420. the reading and

  1421. so as we're

  1422. waiting through

  1423. the narrative,

  1424. we're wondering,

  1425. wow, is

  1426. Abraham actually

  1427. going to do

  1428. this?

  1429. Is he for

  1430. real right

  1431. now?

  1432. Is he going

  1433. to follow

  1434. through?

  1435. And then to

  1436. make it even

  1437. better,

  1438. verse 22,

  1439. when he had

  1440. finished talking

  1441. with him,

  1442. God went

  1443. up from

  1444. Abraham.

  1445. Scholars will

  1446. tell us that

  1447. when God

  1448. finishes speaking,

  1449. we almost

  1450. always move

  1451. on to the

  1452. next scene.

  1453. There is no

  1454. note of God

  1455. getting up and

  1456. leaving.

  1457. And so this is

  1458. especially important

  1459. that we're told

  1460. of God's exit.

  1461. It is, in a

  1462. sense, God's

  1463. kind of his

  1464. mic drop,

  1465. right?

  1466. Okay, you

  1467. need to

  1468. obey.

  1469. I'm out.

  1470. And so we

  1471. have that

  1472. moment where

  1473. the question

  1474. is, is

  1475. Abraham going

  1476. to obey?

  1477. That explains

  1478. for us

  1479. verses 22

  1480. through 27.

  1481. Does

  1482. Abraham

  1483. obey?

  1484. Yes.

  1485. And not

  1486. only does he

  1487. obey, he

  1488. really obeys.

  1489. We are

  1490. told, not

  1491. once, not

  1492. twice, but

  1493. three times

  1494. that Abraham

  1495. circumcised

  1496. Ishmael.

  1497. Why do we

  1498. need to hear

  1499. about that

  1500. three times?

  1501. So there's

  1502. no mistake

  1503. in our

  1504. mind.

  1505. Abraham did

  1506. what God

  1507. told him

  1508. to do.

  1509. of course, our

  1510. New Testament

  1511. reading, Romans

    Romans 4:11

  1512. chapter 4,

  1513. verse 11,

  1514. points out,

  1515. Abraham's

  1516. righteousness

  1517. came before

  1518. circumcision.

  1519. Genesis 15

  1520. comes before

  1521. Genesis 17.

  1522. This obedience

  1523. does not earn

  1524. his new

  1525. identity.

  1526. It does not

  1527. earn God's

  1528. favor.

  1529. It is the

  1530. right response

  1531. to his new

  1532. identity, to

  1533. God's favor.

  1534. God's favor.

  1535. What does

  1536. it mean to

  1537. be in a

  1538. relationship

  1539. with God?

  1540. How does

  1541. it change

  1542. us?

  1543. Being in a

  1544. relationship

  1545. with God

  1546. means that

  1547. he gives

  1548. us a

  1549. new identity.

  1550. Being in a

  1551. relationship

  1552. with God

  1553. means he

  1554. gives us

  1555. new

  1556. responsibilities.

  1557. I told

  1558. you that

  1559. Abraham had

  1560. a general

  1561. and a

  1562. specific

  1563. command.

  1564. There is

  1565. a general

  1566. and a

  1567. specific

  1568. command for

  1569. us as

  1570. well.

  1571. general

  1572. command,

  1573. walk

  1574. before me

  1575. and be

  1576. blameless.

  1577. As I

  1578. told you a

  1579. couple weeks

  1580. ago,

  1581. God's

  1582. laws,

  1583. his rules

  1584. are not

  1585. arbitrary.

  1586. God's

  1587. rules,

  1588. his laws

  1589. are set

  1590. up to

  1591. cooperate

  1592. with the

  1593. grain of

  1594. the

  1595. universe.

  1596. If you

  1597. want to

  1598. experience

  1599. blessing

  1600. and

  1601. flourishing,

  1602. do

  1603. what

  1604. God

  1605. says.

  1606. God

  1607. gives us

  1608. his

  1609. commands

  1610. not

  1611. because

  1612. he

  1613. is

  1614. a

  1615. harsh

  1616. task

  1617. master,

  1618. but because

  1619. he wants

  1620. you to

  1621. have

  1622. what is

  1623. good.

  1624. He wants

  1625. you to

  1626. have

  1627. what is

  1628. good.

  1629. There's a

  1630. specific

  1631. command as

  1632. well.

  1633. Abraham

  1634. has this

  1635. call to

  1636. circumcision.

  1637. Now,

  1638. circumcision

  1639. has been

  1640. replaced

  1641. by baptism

  1642. in the

  1643. New Testament.

  1644. Baptism

  1645. means many

  1646. things.

  1647. One of the

  1648. things it

  1649. means is

  1650. the same

  1651. that we

  1652. saw this

  1653. morning in

  1654. circumcision,

  1655. which is

  1656. membership

  1657. in God's

  1658. people.

  1659. We know

  1660. that,

  1661. right,

  1662. because of

  1663. the punishment.

  1664. The punishment

  1665. in the Old

  1666. Testament often

  1667. fits the

  1668. crime.

  1669. Verse 14,

  1670. if you

  1671. don't get

  1672. circumcised,

  1673. you'll be

  1674. cut off

  1675. from the

  1676. people.

  1677. What's

  1678. the opposite

  1679. of that?

  1680. The

  1681. opposite is

  1682. embracing

  1683. God's

  1684. people.

  1685. Embracing

  1686. the church,

  1687. being a

  1688. part of

  1689. where God

  1690. has said,

  1691. this is the

  1692. place where

  1693. my blessing

  1694. happens.

  1695. You cut

  1696. yourself off

  1697. from God's

  1698. people.

  1699. You've

  1700. actually chosen

  1701. what God

  1702. says is a

  1703. curse.

  1704. Can you

  1705. imagine an

  1706. Israelite saying,

  1707. well, I've

  1708. been circumcised

  1709. and I'm still

  1710. going to

  1711. leave?

  1712. No,

  1713. that's where

  1714. God's

  1715. blessing

  1716. resides.

  1717. Don't

  1718. choose

  1719. the

  1720. curse.

  1721. Commit

  1722. to God's

  1723. church.

  1724. Commit

  1725. to his

  1726. people.

  1727. You

  1728. will be

  1729. blessed.

  1730. That's the

  1731. place.

  1732. That's the

  1733. place where

  1734. we're

  1735. equipped and

  1736. empowered to

  1737. do everything

  1738. God's called

  1739. us to

  1740. do.

  1741. The article

  1742. about Bodie

  1743. McBoatface

  1744. came out in

  1745. 2016,

  1746. and at the

  1747. time, they

  1748. said it was

  1749. going to set

  1750. sail in

  1751. 2019, did

  1752. not have

  1753. its maiden

  1754. voyage until

  1755. 2021.

  1756. Why?

  1757. The boat

  1758. had to be

  1759. equipped for

  1760. the mission

  1761. ahead of it,

  1762. right?

  1763. It is not

  1764. easy to

  1765. navigate the

  1766. icy waters

  1767. of the

  1768. Arctic.

  1769. Christian,

  1770. the Lord

  1771. never sends

  1772. us out

  1773. before he

  1774. equips us.

  1775. Notice what

  1776. happens here.

  1777. the identity

  1778. comes before

  1779. the mission.

  1780. The same

  1781. thing with

  1782. our Lord

  1783. Jesus.

  1784. Remember,

  1785. Jesus is

  1786. baptized before

  1787. he goes into

  1788. the desert

  1789. for 40 days

  1790. and 40 nights.

  1791. And what

  1792. happens when

  1793. he's baptized?

  1794. God the

  1795. Father says,

  1796. this is my

  1797. beloved son.

  1798. Even

  1799. Jesus needed

  1800. to be reminded

  1801. of his

  1802. identity

  1803. before his

  1804. mission.

  1805. Of course,

  1806. it doesn't

  1807. come free.

  1808. Remember what

  1809. we saw in

  1810. Genesis 15.

  1811. God is

  1812. the one

  1813. who pays

  1814. the price

  1815. of the

  1816. covenant.

  1817. He's the

  1818. one who

  1819. pays for

  1820. our failure.

  1821. The

  1822. punishment,

  1823. verse 14,

  1824. is that you

  1825. will be

  1826. cut off.

  1827. What

  1828. happened to

  1829. Jesus?

  1830. Jesus was

  1831. cut off.

  1832. Jesus came,

  1833. lived the

  1834. perfect life

  1835. that we

  1836. should have

  1837. lived,

  1838. died the

  1839. death that

  1840. we deserve,

  1841. cut off

  1842. instead of

  1843. us.

  1844. We don't

  1845. earn the

  1846. blessings

  1847. because Jesus

  1848. earned them

  1849. for us.

  1850. Because God

  1851. has given

  1852. us a

  1853. new

  1854. identity,

  1855. we can

  1856. live

  1857. lives

  1858. of obedience.

  1859. Because we

  1860. have a new

  1861. identity,

  1862. we can

  1863. embrace

  1864. new

  1865. responsibilities.

  1866. let's

  1867. pray.

  1868. Our

  1869. Father in

  1870. heaven,

  1871. we do

  1872. again praise

  1873. you and

  1874. thank you

  1875. for your

  1876. word.

  1877. We thank

  1878. you that

  1879. you come

  1880. to us,

  1881. you seek

  1882. us out

  1883. like Hagar,

  1884. even when

  1885. we're not

  1886. seeking you.

  1887. That you

  1888. free us

  1889. from the

  1890. burden

  1891. of justifying

  1892. ourselves and

  1893. instead

  1894. you're the

  1895. one who

  1896. gives us

  1897. a name.

  1898. We ask

  1899. that you

  1900. would drive

  1901. that deep

  1902. into our

  1903. hearts,

  1904. that it

  1905. would lead

  1906. us to love

  1907. and serve

  1908. you more

  1909. and more.

  1910. We ask

  1911. these things

  1912. in Jesus'

  1913. name.

  1914. Amen.

  1915. Amen.

  1916. Amen.
