  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. ! It's my joy to bring God's word to you today. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here.

  3. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  4. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  5. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  6. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  7. You'll remember that Genesis is the very first book in the Bible.

  8. It tells the origin story, first of the world and the universe in chapters 1 through 11.

  9. And then in chapters 11 through 51 it tells the story of God's people, the story of Israel.

  10. We're focusing together on chapters 11 through 25 which tell the story of Abraham.

  11. We're getting near the end by the way, we're in chapter 20 this morning.

  12. And we're doing that for two reasons.

  13. First, to prepare us to return to our series in the book of Romans.

  14. Where we're going to pick up in chapter 4 which is about Abraham.

  15. So we're looking at Abraham so that later we can again look at Abraham.

  16. We're doing it for a second reason too which is that it allows us to ask this question.

  17. What does it look like to follow God in faith?

  18. This week, Abraham does it again.

  19. What I mean by that is he does the very same sin he did back in chapter 12.

  20. Now several months ago, you'll remember in chapter 12 he told Sarah,

  21. Hey, when we go into this foreign country I need you to lie.

  22. And I need you to tell people you're my sister rather than my wife.

  23. And I want to do that because I'm trying to save my skin.

  24. I'm afraid that if I tell people that you're my wife they will kill me to get at you.

  25. And so in some ways, this is a repeat of what we've seen before.

  26. If we were to go on to chapter 26 of Genesis, we would see it again with Abraham's son Isaac.

  27. But there is this week a new angle which is this.

  28. Abimelech serves as a contrast to Abraham.

  29. We have a pagan king who does what's right.

  30. God's chosen Abraham who does what's wrong.

  31. So it raises this question for us.

  32. When we come across non-Christians who are upright and moral,

  33. does it mean our faith is unnecessary?

  34. Do we really need to follow Jesus?

  35. There's these people out there who are living good lives without him.

  36. So with that question, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 20.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  37. You can turn in your worship guide.

  38. You can turn on your phone.

  39. You can turn in your Bible.

  40. No matter where you turn, Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5 tells us,

    Proverbs 30:5

  41. every word of God proves true.

  42. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  43. So that's why we read now Genesis chapter 20 starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  44. From there, Abraham journeyed toward the territory of the Negev

  45. and lived between Kadesh and Shur.

  46. And he sojourned in Gerar.

  47. And Abraham said of Sarah his wife,

  48. She is my sister.

  49. And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

  50. But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night and said to him,

  51. Behold, you are a dead man

  52. because of the woman whom you have taken,

  53. for she is a man's wife.

  54. Now Abimelech had not approached her.

  55. So he said, Lord, will you kill an innocent people?

  56. Did he not himself say to me, she is my sister?

  57. And she herself said, he is my brother.

  58. In the integrity of my heart and the innocence of my hands,

  59. I have done this.

  60. Verse 6.

  61. Then God said to him in the dream,

  62. Yes, I know that you have done this in the integrity of your heart.

  63. And it was I who kept you from sinning against me.

  64. Therefore, I did not let you touch her.

  65. Now then return the man's wife, for he is a prophet,

  66. so that he will pray for you and you shall live.

  67. But if you do not return her,

  68. know that you shall surely die,

  69. you and all who are yours.

  70. Verse 8.

  71. So Abimelech rose early in the morning

  72. and called all his servants and told them all these things.

  73. And the men were very much afraid.

  74. Then Abimelech called Abraham and said to him,

  75. What have you done to us?

  76. And how have I sinned against you

  77. that you have brought on me and my kingdom a great sin?

  78. You have done to me things that ought not to be done.

  79. And Abimelech said to Abraham,

  80. What did you see that you did this thing?

  81. Abraham said,

  82. I did it because I thought

  83. there is no fear of God at all in this place

  84. and they will kill me because of my wife.

  85. Besides, she is indeed my sister.

  86. The daughter of my father,

  87. though not the daughter of my mother.

  88. And she became my wife.

  89. And when God calls me to wander from my father's house,

  90. I said to her,

  91. This is the kindness you must do to me.

  92. At every place to which we come,

  93. say of me,

  94. He is my brother.

  95. Verse 14.

  96. Then Abimelech took sheep and oxen

  97. and male servants and female servants

  98. and gave them to Abraham

  99. and returned Sarah, his wife, to him.

  100. And Abimelech said,

  101. Behold, my land is before you.

  102. Dwell where it pleases you.

  103. To Sarah he said,

  104. Behold, I have given your brother

  105. a thousand pieces of silver.

  106. It is a sign of your innocence

  107. in the eyes of all who are with you

  108. and before everyone you are vindicated.

  109. Then Abraham prayed to God

  110. and God healed Abimelech

  111. and also healed his wife and female slaves

  112. so that they bore children.

  113. For the Lord had closed

  114. all the wombs of the house of Abimelech

  115. because of Sarah, Abraham's wife.

  116. I invite you to pray with me

  117. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  118. Our Father in heaven,

  119. we do thank you and praise you again

  120. that you have established this church

  121. here in Southwest Colorado Springs

  122. even before any of us thought of it.

  123. It was in your mind.

  124. We thank you that you have given us your word

  125. and that you use it powerfully in our lives.

  126. We ask that you would do that again this morning,

  127. that you would open our eyes,

  128. you'd unstop our ears,

  129. you'd clear our minds,

  130. you'd soften our hearts,

  131. that we would see and hear

  132. and believe and understand

  133. everything that's written in your word.

  134. We ask most of all

  135. that we would see Jesus Christ,

  136. that he would be more precious

  137. and beautiful to us

  138. than ever before,

  139. that we would love him,

  140. we'd follow him.

  141. We ask these things in his mighty name.

  142. Amen.

  143. In the summer of 1998,

  144. I started fourth grade

  145. and I also started violin lessons.

  146. And for the next three summers after that,

  147. 99 and 2000 and 2001,

  148. I went to music camp

  149. on the campus of Catholic University

  150. in Washington, D.C.

  151. And while I was there,

  152. I made a friend whose name was Lee.

  153. Lee and I were tight.

  154. We were buds.

  155. He was kind and accepting and funny

  156. and really he was just a wonderful person all around.

  157. But,

  158. Lee was not a Christian.

  159. Now, I loved Lee,

  160. but Lee lived in New Jersey

  161. and I lived in Maryland

  162. and so it was more of a camp friendship

  163. than anything else.

  164. I remember after the last concert,

  165. one of those weeks,

  166. I was just crying in the car

  167. as my parents were driving me home

  168. because I realized,

  169. I'm not going to have this buddy anymore.

  170. But we had those summers together.

  171. Summer of 2001 was the last summer with Lee

  172. and that fall I started seventh grade.

  173. When I started seventh grade in school,

  174. I also started seventh grade in Sunday school.

  175. And one Sunday at our church,

  176. we had this lesson.

  177. I don't remember what it was about,

  178. but I do remember this.

  179. At the end of the lesson,

  180. and we had this handout

  181. with these little illustrations on it,

  182. we were told the application was,

  183. you should hang out

  184. and have Christian friends

  185. instead of non-Christian friends.

  186. And the reason you should do this

  187. is because Christians

  188. are better than non-Christians.

  189. So if you do this,

  190. your Christian friends will be kinder

  191. and nicer and they won't lie.

  192. And so that's really

  193. who you should be tight with.

  194. I was furious.

  195. And I was furious

  196. because my friend Lee

  197. was better than the Christians that I knew.

  198. In fact, the other 12-year-olds

  199. at this church

  200. were terrible.

  201. They were kind of bullies.

  202. They were little punks.

  203. And so 12-year-old Matthew

  204. went off.

  205. And I informed my Sunday school class

  206. that this was in fact incorrect

  207. and that there were actually

  208. some non-Christians

  209. who were nicer than Christians.

  210. To make things better,

  211. there was another girl

  212. in the class named Sydney

  213. and she backed me up.

  214. Yeah, that's right.

  215. Tell them.

  216. And so we staged

  217. an insurrection

  218. in the seventh grade

  219. Sunday school class

  220. at Alexandria Presbyterian Church

  221. in Alexandria, Virginia.

  222. And I don't think

  223. our teachers quite knew

  224. what to do.

  225. This is not a sell

  226. for teaching Sunday school,

  227. by the way.

  228. But I won't be in your class.

  229. Thankfully,

  230. it was the end of the class.

  231. So I think we just kind of

  232. wrapped things up

  233. quite awkwardly.

  234. But what we're getting at here

  235. is there is a tension

  236. which is this.

  237. Sometimes Christians

  238. do really terrible things.

  239. And sometimes non-Christians

  240. do really wonderful things.

  241. Sometimes Christians behave poorly.

  242. Sometimes non-Christians

  243. behave quite well.

  244. And what do we do with that?

  245. It's part of the challenge

  246. of this passage

  247. this morning.

  248. Genesis chapter 20

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  249. is a repeat,

  250. as I mentioned,

  251. of Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  252. In both,

  253. Abraham tells Sarah

  254. to lie.

  255. In both,

  256. she says

  257. she's just a sister

  258. rather than a wife

  259. to protect

  260. Abraham's life.

  261. In chapter 12,

  262. she tells this lie

  263. to Pharaoh.

  264. In chapter 20,

  265. to Abimelech.

  266. And so both Pharaoh

  267. and Abimelech

  268. take Sarah

  269. into their household

  270. as their wives.

  271. Chapter 12,

  272. remember God afflicts

  273. Pharaoh with plagues.

  274. Chapter 20,

  275. God comes in a dream

  276. to warn him.

  277. That's what we see

  278. in verse 3.

  279. And there's an emphasis here

  280. on how righteous

  281. Abimelech is.

  282. Verse 4,

  283. Abimelech says,

  284. Lord, will you kill

  285. an innocent people?

  286. Verse 5,

  287. in the integrity

  288. of my heart

  289. and the innocence

  290. of my hands,

  291. I have done this.

  292. Verse 6,

  293. God says,

  294. God agrees with him.

  295. Yes.

  296. You know what,

  297. Abimelech,

  298. you're right.

  299. I know that you

  300. have done this

  301. in the integrity

  302. of your heart.

  303. In a certain sense,

  304. Abimelech is innocent.

  305. He's just trying

  306. to do what's right.

  307. Now there's a sense

  308. in which he's not,

  309. right?

  310. He's done something wrong

  311. even though he didn't

  312. realize it.

  313. And so he goes

  314. to Abraham,

  315. this is verses 9 and 10,

  316. and he is livid.

  317. What have you done

  318. to us?

  319. This is verse 9.

  320. You have done

  321. to me things

  322. that ought

  323. not

  324. to be done.

  325. And so he demands

  326. an explanation.

  327. Abraham,

  328. explain yourself.

  329. Even I,

  330. a pagan,

  331. know this is not

  332. right.

  333. Abraham gives

  334. this incredibly

  335. lame explanation

  336. in verse 11.

  337. I did it

  338. because I thought

  339. there is no

  340. fear of God

  341. at all

  342. in this place

  343. and they will

  344. kill me

  345. because

  346. of my wife.

  347. And in that

  348. statement,

  349. there is this

  350. rich

  351. irony.

  352. because Abraham

  353. says,

  354. I thought

  355. there is no

  356. fear of God

  357. here.

  358. And yet,

  359. who is it

  360. that doesn't

  361. fear God?

  362. It's Abraham.

  363. Abraham is the

  364. one who doesn't

  365. believe God's

  366. promise from

  367. the last chapter.

  368. Remember,

  369. it was just

  370. the last chapter

  371. when God

  372. came to Abraham

  373. and Sarah

  374. and says,

  375. look,

  376. or two chapters

  377. ago,

  378. says,

  379. look,

  380. within a year

  381. you're going

  382. to have a son.

  383. Abraham is the

  384. one who does

  385. not take God

  386. at his word.

  387. Who does

  388. take God

  389. at his word?

  390. Abimelech.

  391. Abimelech,

  392. the pagan,

  393. is actually

  394. the one here

  395. who fears

  396. God.

  397. God comes

  398. to him

  399. in a dream,

  400. gives him

  401. a word,

  402. Abimelech

  403. believes

  404. and obeys.

  405. And in case

  406. we missed it,

  407. the author

  408. of Genesis

  409. rubs it

  410. in our

  411. face

  412. in verse

  413. 8.

  414. Abimelech

  415. tells his

  416. servants

  417. and what

  418. happens?

  419. The men

  420. were very

  421. much

  422. afraid.

  423. Three

  424. verses later,

  425. yeah,

  426. I just didn't

  427. think anyone

  428. feared God

  429. here.

  430. So I

  431. decided to

  432. go off

  433. the map.

  434. So the

  435. way of

  436. things is

  437. reversed.

  438. Pagans

  439. act well,

  440. God's

  441. people

  442. act

  443. poorly.

  444. In fact,

  445. if you've

  446. lived on

  447. this earth

  448. for some

  449. time and

  450. you've been

  451. in the

  452. church,

  453. you know

  454. this.

  455. It's a

  456. common

  457. experience.

  458. There's a

  459. man named

  460. Abraham

  461. Kuyper

  462. who's a

  463. Dutch

  464. theologian

  465. and actually

  466. was prime

  467. minister of

  468. the Netherlands

  469. for a while

  470. when he

  471. wrote a lot

  472. about God's

  473. common grace

  474. and he

  475. says this,

  476. this is on

  477. page 7

  478. of your

  479. worship guide,

  480. the world

  481. turns out

  482. to be

  483. better than

  484. expected

  485. and the

  486. church

  487. worse

  488. than

  489. expected.

  490. Why is

  491. that?

  492. Seems

  493. counterintuitive,

  494. right?

  495. We would

  496. expect the

  497. church to

  498. always exceed

  499. our

  500. expectations.

  501. God's

  502. spirit is

  503. at work

  504. in a

  505. special way

  506. turning

  507. hearts of

  508. stone

  509. into

  510. hearts of

  511. flesh

  512. and that's

  513. not true

  514. in the

  515. outside world.

  516. So why

  517. do things

  518. not

  519. appear,

  520. play out

  521. the way

  522. that we

  523. want to?

  524. We're

  525. going to

  526. look in

  527. two

  528. sections

  529. really

  530. broken

  531. out by

  532. this

  533. quote.

  534. Why is

  535. the world

  536. better

  537. than

  538. expected?

  539. Why is

  540. the church

  541. worse

  542. than

  543. expected?

  544. First of

  545. all,

  546. why is

  547. the world

  548. better

  549. than

  550. expected?

  551. The

  552. world

  553. is

  554. better

  555. than

  556. expected

  557. because

  558. despite

  559. man's

  560. rebellion

  561. against

  562. God,

  563. every

  564. person

  565. is

  566. still

  567. made

  568. in

  569. God's

  570. image.

  571. Despite

  572. our

  573. rebellion,

  574. every

  575. person

  576. is

  577. made

  578. in

  579. God's

  580. image.

  581. Brit

  582. read it

  583. for us

  584. this morning

  585. from Acts

    Acts 17 chapter mention

  586. chapter 17.

  587. This is on

  588. page 3

  589. of your

  590. worship

  591. guide.

  592. Verse

  593. 28,

  594. for we

  595. are

  596. indeed

  597. his

  598. offspring.

  599. God

  600. is

  601. embracing

  602. him.

  603. There's

  604. a sense

  605. in which

  606. we can

  607. say

  608. not

  609. everyone

  610. is

  611. God's

  612. child

  613. in the

  614. sense

  615. that not

  616. everyone

  617. has been

  618. adopted

  619. by God

  620. as one

  621. of Jesus'

  622. brothers and

  623. sisters.

  624. There's

  625. a sense

  626. in which

  627. if you're

  628. not a

  629. Christian,

  630. God

  631. is not

  632. your

  633. father.

  634. There's

  635. another

  636. sense

  637. in which

  638. if you're

  639. not a

  640. Christian,

  641. God

  642. is

  643. your

  644. father

  645. in the

  646. sense

  647. that

  648. he

  649. made

  650. you.

  651. You

  652. can't

  653. erase

  654. the

  655. image

  656. of

  657. God

  658. in

  659. humanity.

  660. So the

  661. image

  662. of

  663. God,

  664. it's

  665. marred,

  666. it's

  667. obscured,

  668. it's

  669. twisted,

  670. never

  671. erased.

  672. I want

  673. you to

  674. think about

  675. it this

  676. way.

  677. A

  678. number

  679. of you

  680. have

  681. had the

  682. very

  683. painful

  684. experience

  685. of being

  686. cut off

  687. by a

  688. son or

  689. a

  690. daughter.

  691. So I

  692. want you

  693. to imagine

  694. if that's

  695. not your

  696. experience,

  697. imagine

  698. with me

  699. that your

  700. son cuts

  701. you off.

  702. He says,

  703. you know

  704. what,

  705. I'm just

  706. not going

  707. to talk

  708. to you

  709. anymore.

  710. Done

  711. with you.

  712. As far

  713. as I'm

  714. concerned,

  715. mom and

  716. dad are

  717. erased

  718. from my

  719. life.

  720. No

  721. matter

  722. what,

  723. if he

  724. is your

  725. biological

  726. son,

  727. he still

  728. looks

  729. like you.

  730. Right?

  731. He still

  732. has your

  733. nose.

  734. He might

  735. still have

  736. your spouse's

  737. smile.

  738. His

  739. physical

  740. appearance

  741. doesn't

  742. change

  743. even if

  744. he has

  745. cut

  746. you off.

  747. When he

  748. talks,

  749. he probably

  750. still has

  751. some of

  752. your

  753. verbal

  754. tics.

  755. When he

  756. walks,

  757. he might

  758. remind some

  759. people of

  760. your dad,

  761. his

  762. grandfather.

  763. The point

  764. is this,

  765. you can

  766. act as

  767. if your

  768. parents

  769. don't

  770. exist.

  771. You

  772. can't

  773. escape

  774. the

  775. resemblance.

  776. Same is

  777. true of

  778. us and

  779. God.

  780. You can

  781. act as

  782. if God

  783. does not

  784. exist.

  785. You

  786. cannot

  787. escape

  788. the

  789. resemblance.

  790. Why is the

  791. world better

  792. than expected?

  793. Because

  794. everyone is

  795. still made

  796. in the

  797. image of

  798. God.

  799. The image

  800. of God

  801. can be

  802. obscured,

  803. it can be

  804. marred,

  805. it can be

  806. twisted,

  807. it will

  808. never be

  809. erased.

  810. Christ.

  811. How is it

  812. that we

  813. explain

  814. non-Christians

  815. who are

  816. kind and

  817. generous and

  818. moral and

  819. upright in

  820. many ways,

  821. well,

  822. in the

  823. broad sense,

  824. God is

  825. still their

  826. father.

  827. And so

  828. in some

  829. ways,

  830. they still

  831. look like

  832. him.

  833. It is

  834. possible

  835. to accept

  836. the gifts

  837. and not

  838. acknowledge

  839. the

  840. giver.

  841. You can

  842. distance

  843. yourself

  844. from God

  845. as much

  846. as you

  847. want.

  848. You

  849. cannot

  850. erase

  851. his

  852. image.

  853. It is

  854. critical for

  855. us to

  856. understand

  857. this,

  858. to really

  859. comprehend

  860. it,

  861. because if

  862. we don't,

  863. we are

  864. setting

  865. ourselves

  866. up for

  867. disillusionment

  868. in this

  869. world.

  870. We are

  871. setting

  872. ourselves

  873. up for

  874. disillusionment

  875. when we

  876. meet

  877. wonderful

  878. people

  879. who are

  880. not

  881. Christians.

  882. Remember

  883. last week,

  884. I told you

  885. kids,

  886. hey,

  887. if you

  888. want to

  889. go to

  890. college,

  891. great.

  892. Make sure

  893. you pick

  894. a college

  895. where there's

  896. a community

  897. of believers

  898. who can

  899. sustain

  900. and uphold

  901. your faith.

  902. This week,

  903. I'll add

  904. this.

  905. When you

  906. go to

  907. college,

  908. you will

  909. meet

  910. wonderful,

  911. thoughtful,

  912. smart,

  913. and moral

  914. pagans.

  915. And if

  916. you're

  917. not

  918. prepared

  919. for

  920. that,

  921. it

  922. will

  923. shake

  924. your

  925. faith.

  926. Wait,

  927. this

  928. person

  929. is so

  930. good,

  931. what is

  932. my

  933. religion

  934. worth?

  935. It doesn't

  936. mean that

  937. your religion

  938. is worthless.

  939. It means

  940. that the

  941. image of

  942. God

  943. shines

  944. through

  945. in them

  946. despite

  947. and in

  948. the midst

  949. of their

  950. sin.

  951. It does

  952. not mean

  953. your religion

  954. is worthless.

  955. It means

  956. that the

  957. image of

  958. God

  959. shines

  960. out in

  961. them

  962. despite

  963. and in

  964. the midst

  965. of their

  966. sin

  967. and rebellion.

  968. What is

  969. it that I

  970. say every

  971. week?

  972. There's

  973. no one

  974. so good

  975. they don't

  976. need God's

  977. grace.

  978. And no

  979. one so bad

  980. they can't

  981. have it.

  982. This part's

  983. the first

  984. half.

  985. There's

  986. no one

  987. so good

  988. they don't

  989. need

  990. God's

  991. grace.

  992. We can

  993. also remember

  994. this as we

  995. talk with

  996. non-Christians

  997. we can

  998. affirm all

  999. the good

  1000. and beautiful

  1001. wonderful

  1002. things in

  1003. their lives

  1004. and we

  1005. can point

  1006. them to

  1007. its

  1008. source.

  1009. I've

  1010. mentioned

  1011. to you

  1012. several

  1013. times that

  1014. for the

  1015. last

  1016. three

  1017. years or

  1018. so my

  1019. chiropractor

  1020. and I

  1021. have had

  1022. this ongoing

  1023. conversation

  1024. about faith

  1025. and Christianity

  1026. and one

  1027. of the

  1028. lines he

  1029. likes to

  1030. use is

  1031. well I

  1032. act like

  1033. a

  1034. Christian.

  1035. And I

  1036. have several

  1037. responses to

  1038. that.

  1039. One of

  1040. them I

  1041. have shared

  1042. with you

  1043. well you

  1044. act like a

  1045. Christian except

  1046. in the most

  1047. important way

  1048. which is that

  1049. you don't

  1050. worship the

  1051. living God.

  1052. But the

  1053. other response

  1054. is this

  1055. and I've

  1056. said this

  1057. to him

  1058. multiple

  1059. times

  1060. yes you

  1061. do

  1062. because God

  1063. is your

  1064. father.

  1065. The last

  1066. time I

  1067. said that

  1068. to him

  1069. he said

  1070. well I

  1071. thought

  1072. you'd

  1073. say that.

  1074. Right

  1075. what are you

  1076. saying when

  1077. you say I

  1078. act like a

  1079. Christian?

  1080. You're

  1081. saying I

  1082. don't

  1083. need

  1084. God.

  1085. I don't

  1086. need

  1087. religion to

  1088. be a

  1089. good

  1090. person.

  1091. Well guess

  1092. what?

  1093. You're giving

  1094. witness to

  1095. God even

  1096. as you

  1097. deny him.

  1098. And your

  1099. moral behavior

  1100. however great

  1101. it is it's

  1102. twisted,

  1103. it's distorted,

  1104. it's pointed

  1105. in the wrong

  1106. direction.

  1107. And that's

  1108. what I mean

  1109. when I say

  1110. well you act

  1111. like a

  1112. Christian except

  1113. in the most

  1114. important way

  1115. that you

  1116. don't worship

  1117. the living

  1118. God.

  1119. The last

  1120. time I said

  1121. that to

  1122. him he

  1123. said yeah

  1124. you know I

  1125. kind of get

  1126. that.

  1127. You know the

  1128. things that I

  1129. do that are

  1130. good are

  1131. kind of

  1132. pointed in

  1133. the wrong

  1134. direction for

  1135. the wrong

  1136. reason.

  1137. Yes.

  1138. Exactly

  1139. right.

  1140. Are you

  1141. going to

  1142. accept God's

  1143. gifts and

  1144. then insult

  1145. the giver?

  1146. Are you

  1147. going to

  1148. look like

  1149. God the

  1150. father and

  1151. then act

  1152. like he

  1153. doesn't

  1154. exist?

  1155. What

  1156. greater insult

  1157. could there

  1158. be?

  1159. Yes,

  1160. non-Christians

  1161. are better

  1162. than expected

  1163. because the

  1164. image of God

  1165. is still

  1166. there.

  1167. That doesn't

  1168. mean they

  1169. don't need

  1170. God.

  1171. It gives

  1172. witness to

  1173. the fact

  1174. they've

  1175. rejected

  1176. him.

  1177. Remember

  1178. Romans

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  1179. chapter 1

  1180. the conscience

  1181. convicts the

  1182. fact that we

  1183. know right

  1184. from wrong

  1185. shows our

  1186. need for

  1187. God.

  1188. It doesn't

  1189. excuse us.

  1190. It's the

  1191. first half.

  1192. The world

  1193. better than

  1194. expected.

  1195. Perhaps this

  1196. is the

  1197. harder one.

  1198. The church

  1199. worse than

  1200. expected.

  1201. God's

  1202. grace.

  1203. We should

  1204. think,

  1205. we would

  1206. hope,

  1207. right,

  1208. that someone

  1209. who's

  1210. come to

  1211. Christ,

  1212. who said,

  1213. yes,

  1214. I'm a

  1215. sinner in

  1216. need of

  1217. God's

  1218. grace,

  1219. and the

  1220. Holy Spirit

  1221. is at

  1222. work in

  1223. a powerful,

  1224. an extra

  1225. special way

  1226. transforming a

  1227. heart of stone

  1228. into a heart

  1229. of flesh,

  1230. would always be

  1231. behaving better

  1232. than the world

  1233. around them.

  1234. And yet Abraham

  1235. shows us that's

  1236. not true,

  1237. right?

  1238. A

  1239. Bimelech has

  1240. the fear of

  1241. God, at

  1242. least in this

  1243. episode,

  1244. Abraham does

  1245. not.

  1246. Well,

  1247. come back to

  1248. the phrase I

  1249. mentioned earlier.

  1250. No one's so

  1251. good they don't

  1252. need God's

  1253. grace,

  1254. and no

  1255. one's so

  1256. bad they

  1257. can't have

  1258. it.

  1259. First half,

  1260. why are

  1261. non-Christians

  1262. so good?

  1263. No one's so

  1264. good they don't

  1265. need God's

  1266. grace.

  1267. Why are

  1268. Christians

  1269. sometimes so

  1270. terrible,

  1271. and no one

  1272. so bad

  1273. they can't

  1274. have it?

  1275. You don't

  1276. become perfect

  1277. the day you

  1278. become a

  1279. Christian.

  1280. Be great

  1281. that were

  1282. true,

  1283. be great

  1284. if God

  1285. came and

  1286. just after

  1287. that point

  1288. you never

  1289. sinned.

  1290. Some churches

  1291. teach that

  1292. that's

  1293. possible.

  1294. No,

  1295. the reality

  1296. of a

  1297. Christian

  1298. is not

  1299. that every

  1300. sin in

  1301. your life

  1302. is just

  1303. taken to

  1304. a place

  1305. where it

  1306. has no

  1307. temptation

  1308. or power

  1309. over you.

  1310. No,

  1311. the promise

  1312. of the

  1313. Christian

  1314. life

  1315. is that

  1316. you are

  1317. growing

  1318. holier

  1319. year by

  1320. year.

  1321. The question

  1322. is not

  1323. are you

  1324. perfect?

  1325. The question

  1326. is are you

  1327. in a different

  1328. place than

  1329. you were

  1330. ten years

  1331. ago?

  1332. is there

  1333. evidence that

  1334. the Spirit

  1335. of God

  1336. is at

  1337. work in

  1338. your life?

  1339. And where

  1340. a Christian

  1341. is today

  1342. depends on

  1343. where they

  1344. started.

  1345. Where a

  1346. Christian is

  1347. today depends

  1348. on where they

  1349. started.

  1350. Is Abraham

  1351. holier than

  1352. he was in

  1353. chapter 12?

  1354. Yeah,

  1355. I think so.

  1356. We've seen

  1357. Abraham's

  1358. great acts

  1359. of faith.

  1360. We're going

  1361. to see

  1362. them,

  1363. especially

  1364. in chapter

  1365. 22.

  1366. Is Abraham

  1367. perfect?

  1368. Of course

  1369. not.

  1370. No one

  1371. so good

  1372. they don't

  1373. need God's

  1374. grace.

  1375. Abimelech.

  1376. No one

  1377. so bad

  1378. they can't

  1379. have it.

  1380. Abraham.

  1381. So if

  1382. someone comes

  1383. to you and

  1384. says,

  1385. I can't

  1386. believe you're

  1387. a Christian

  1388. based on the

  1389. things you

  1390. do.

  1391. yes,

  1392. that should

  1393. convict you.

  1394. And I

  1395. hope you

  1396. can say

  1397. this,

  1398. you should

  1399. have seen

  1400. me 10

  1401. years ago.

  1402. If you

  1403. think this

  1404. is bad,

  1405. you should

  1406. have seen

  1407. where God

  1408. had to

  1409. start with

  1410. me.

  1411. You should

  1412. have seen

  1413. the work

  1414. that he's

  1415. doing.

  1416. We also

  1417. see in this

  1418. passage that

  1419. even in the

  1420. life of

  1421. believers,

  1422. sin patterns

  1423. run deep.

  1424. Abraham's

  1425. fear flared

  1426. up.

  1427. This was

  1428. his go-to

  1429. pattern in

  1430. chapter 12

  1431. to lie about

  1432. Sarah.

  1433. Abraham's

  1434. fear flares

  1435. up here

  1436. again.

  1437. Many

  1438. chapters

  1439. later,

  1440. it does

  1441. the same

  1442. exact

  1443. play.

  1444. In fact,

  1445. it's going

  1446. to get

  1447. worse.

  1448. This

  1449. pattern is

  1450. going to

  1451. run

  1452. across

  1453. generations.

  1454. In

  1455. chapter 26,

  1456. which we're

  1457. not going

  1458. to get

  1459. to in

  1460. this

  1461. series,

  1462. Abraham's

  1463. son Isaac

  1464. does the

  1465. exact same

  1466. thing.

  1467. with his

  1468. wife,

  1469. Rebecca.

  1470. He lies

  1471. about her.

  1472. He says,

  1473. oh, she's

  1474. just my

  1475. sister.

  1476. Where did

  1477. he learn

  1478. that from?

  1479. Remember

  1480. last week,

  1481. Lot and

  1482. his daughters,

  1483. the children

  1484. always know.

  1485. We'll say

  1486. this.

  1487. There's a

  1488. part in our

  1489. confession of

  1490. faith that

  1491. we subscribe

  1492. to as a

  1493. church that

  1494. says some

  1495. sins are

  1496. worse than

  1497. others.

  1498. It goes

  1499. into this

  1500. long

  1501. explanation of

  1502. what makes

  1503. one sin

  1504. worse than

  1505. another sin.

  1506. one of the

  1507. things it

  1508. says is

  1509. sins by

  1510. older people

  1511. are worse

  1512. than sins

  1513. by younger

  1514. people.

  1515. Why would

  1516. that be?

  1517. You've had

  1518. more life,

  1519. right?

  1520. You've had

  1521. more time

  1522. to grow

  1523. in holiness

  1524. and in

  1525. God's word.

  1526. So there's

  1527. something actually

  1528. that's worse

  1529. about chapter

  1530. 20 than

  1531. chapter 12.

  1532. Man,

  1533. Abraham should

  1534. know better,

  1535. right?

  1536. He doesn't

  1537. have the

  1538. excuse of

  1539. youth and

  1540. foolishness.

  1541. By the

  1542. way,

  1543. if you

  1544. think I'm

  1545. picking on

  1546. old people,

  1547. that part of

  1548. the confession

  1549. also says

  1550. sins by

  1551. pastors are

  1552. worse.

  1553. So what

  1554. goes around

  1555. comes around.

  1556. But Abraham's

  1557. older here,

  1558. right?

  1559. God has

  1560. made a

  1561. specific

  1562. promise.

  1563. Two

  1564. chapters

  1565. ago,

  1566. he said

  1567. in a

  1568. year,

  1569. Sarah's

  1570. going to

  1571. give birth,

  1572. and then

  1573. what does

  1574. he do?

  1575. He puts

  1576. her at

  1577. risk.

  1578. The point

  1579. is this,

  1580. are you

  1581. growing?

  1582. Is there

  1583. evidence

  1584. that God's

  1585. spirit is

  1586. at work in

  1587. your heart,

  1588. in your

  1589. mind,

  1590. in your

  1591. life?

  1592. Are you

  1593. today

  1594. someone who

  1595. has more

  1596. of the fruit

  1597. of the

  1598. spirit than

  1599. you did

  1600. two and

  1601. five and

  1602. ten years

  1603. ago?

  1604. More love,

  1605. joy,

  1606. peace,

  1607. patience,

  1608. kindness,

  1609. gentleness,

  1610. and self-control?

  1611. Is there

  1612. evidence that

  1613. God is

  1614. at work?

  1615. I told you

  1616. earlier,

  1617. there's a

  1618. disillusionment

  1619. that can

  1620. come,

  1621. if we

  1622. haven't

  1623. wrapped our

  1624. minds around

  1625. this,

  1626. there's a

  1627. disillusionment

  1628. that can

  1629. come when

  1630. we meet

  1631. wonderful

  1632. people who

  1633. aren't

  1634. Christians.

  1635. We need

  1636. to have

  1637. these

  1638. categories,

  1639. we need

  1640. to think

  1641. about these

  1642. things.

  1643. There's

  1644. also a

  1645. disillusionment

  1646. that comes

  1647. if we

  1648. haven't

  1649. thought about

  1650. these things

  1651. from meeting

  1652. terrible

  1653. Christians.

  1654. I think,

  1655. man,

  1656. you know,

  1657. people will

  1658. tell you

  1659. sometimes,

  1660. well,

  1661. I love

  1662. Jesus,

  1663. I just

  1664. can't

  1665. stand

  1666. his

  1667. followers.

  1668. Of course,

  1669. one of

  1670. his followers,

  1671. unfortunately,

  1672. is in the

  1673. mirror.

  1674. And yet,

  1675. the Bible

  1676. tells us,

  1677. right,

  1678. no one's so

  1679. good,

  1680. they don't

  1681. need God's

  1682. grace.

  1683. No one's

  1684. so bad,

  1685. they can't

  1686. have it.

  1687. And so,

  1688. when we

  1689. meet Christians

  1690. who do

  1691. terrible

  1692. things,

  1693. what should

  1694. we think?

  1695. Wow.

  1696. God

  1697. saves

  1698. people

  1699. like me.

  1700. We need

  1701. to be

  1702. realistic

  1703. about the

  1704. world.

  1705. We need

  1706. to be

  1707. prepared

  1708. for both.

  1709. Can't

  1710. let our

  1711. faith be

  1712. rattled

  1713. when we

  1714. meet

  1715. wonderful

  1716. pagans.

  1717. Can't

  1718. let our

  1719. faith be

  1720. rattled

  1721. when we

  1722. meet

  1723. terrible

  1724. Christians.

  1725. The way

  1726. we avoid

  1727. that is

  1728. we understand

  1729. God's

  1730. grace.

  1731. God's

  1732. grace is

  1733. not

  1734. about

  1735. my

  1736. behavior.

  1737. We'll

  1738. realize

  1739. no one's

  1740. so good,

  1741. they don't

  1742. need God's

  1743. grace.

  1744. No one

  1745. so bad,

  1746. they can't

  1747. have it.

  1748. It's a great

  1749. humility that

  1750. comes for us

  1751. with this

  1752. as well.

  1753. God

  1754. is not

  1755. impressed

  1756. with you.

  1757. If you

  1758. think

  1759. that you're

  1760. a Christian

  1761. because of

  1762. your great

  1763. and superior

  1764. behavior,

  1765. you have,

  1766. as I say

  1767. a lot

  1768. recently,

  1769. lost the

  1770. plot.

  1771. You lost

  1772. the plot.

  1773. God did

  1774. not choose

  1775. Abraham

  1776. because he

  1777. was great.

  1778. God chose

  1779. Abraham

  1780. because God

  1781. was merciful.

  1782. Christian,

  1783. God did

  1784. not choose

  1785. you because

  1786. you were

  1787. or are

  1788. great.

  1789. God chose

  1790. you because

  1791. God is

  1792. merciful.

  1793. The

  1794. scandal

  1795. of the

  1796. gospel is

  1797. this,

  1798. that good

  1799. people still

  1800. need it

  1801. and bad

  1802. people can

  1803. have it.

  1804. Scandal

  1805. of the

  1806. gospel is

  1807. this,

  1808. good people

  1809. need it,

  1810. bad people

  1811. can have

  1812. it.

  1813. Christians

  1814. behave

  1815. poorly

  1816. sometimes,

  1817. non-Christians

  1818. behave quite

  1819. well,

  1820. and it's

  1821. explained by

  1822. this,

  1823. this is on

  1824. page 7

  1825. of your

  1826. worship guide.

  1827. God's

  1828. grace does

  1829. not come

  1830. to people

  1831. who morally

  1832. outperform

  1833. others,

  1834. but to

  1835. those who

  1836. admit their

  1837. failure to

  1838. perform and

  1839. who acknowledge

  1840. their need

  1841. for a

  1842. savior.

  1843. The

  1844. kingdom of

  1845. God is

  1846. not a

  1847. meritocracy.

  1848. good

  1849. Christians

  1850. and bad

  1851. Christians

  1852. and good

  1853. pagans

  1854. both fall

  1855. short of

  1856. the glory

  1857. of God.

  1858. Both face

  1859. the reality

  1860. that the

  1861. wages of

  1862. sin is

  1863. death.

  1864. Both need

  1865. a merciful

  1866. savior as

  1867. their only

  1868. hope in

  1869. life and

  1870. in death.

  1871. Is

  1872. Jesus your

  1873. savior?

  1874. savior?

  1875. Is he

  1876. your only

  1877. hope in

  1878. life and

  1879. in death?

  1880. can you

  1881. say,

  1882. I'm

  1883. never so

  1884. good.

  1885. I don't

  1886. need

  1887. God's

  1888. grace.

  1889. If you

  1890. can,

  1891. you won't

  1892. be shaken.

  1893. You won't

  1894. be shaken

  1895. when those

  1896. who don't

  1897. know God

  1898. are

  1899. examples,

  1900. positive

  1901. examples.

  1902. And you

  1903. won't be

  1904. shaken when

  1905. those who

  1906. do know

  1907. God are

  1908. negative

  1909. examples.

  1910. You'll

  1911. say,

  1912. whatever

  1913. happens,

  1914. it's

  1915. God's

  1916. grace

  1917. for me.

  1918. Christian,

  1919. it's

  1920. God's

  1921. grace

  1922. for you.

  1923. Let's

  1924. pray.

  1925. Our

  1926. Father in

  1927. heaven,

  1928. we do

  1929. praise you

  1930. and thank

  1931. you that

  1932. the kingdom

  1933. of God

  1934. is not

  1935. a meritocracy

  1936. because if

  1937. it were,

  1938. none of us

  1939. would make

  1940. it.

  1941. We ask

  1942. instead,

  1943. instead of

  1944. looking at

  1945. ourselves and

  1946. those around

  1947. us,

  1948. we would

  1949. set our

  1950. eyes on

  1951. you.

  1952. We would

  1953. have the

  1954. right horizon

  1955. line,

  1956. that we

  1957. would compare

  1958. ourselves,

  1959. not to

  1960. others,

  1961. but to

  1962. you and

  1963. your holiness.

  1964. That would

  1965. drive us

  1966. to your

  1967. grace,

  1968. drive us

  1969. to see

  1970. how beautiful

  1971. and glorious

  1972. your mercy

  1973. is,

  1974. that we

  1975. would follow

  1976. you and

  1977. love you

  1978. with all

  1979. our hearts

  1980. and all

  1981. our lives.

  1982. We ask

  1983. these things

  1984. in Jesus'

  1985. name.

  1986. Amen.

  1987. Amen.
