  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us.

  9. In his word.

  10. This week, we are continuing our series in the book of Genesis.

  11. You'll remember that Genesis tells the origin story both of the world and of God's people, Israel.

  12. And when it tells the story of Israel, it begins with the story of Abraham, which is our focus.

  13. Genesis is 50 chapters.

  14. We're actually just doing chapters 11 through 25 to focus on Abraham and his life.

  15. And we're doing that for two reasons.

  16. First, to prepare us to go back to Romans, our series that we're slowly working for.

  17. And when we head back, we'll be in Romans chapter 4, which is about Abraham.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  18. So we're looking at Abraham in Genesis to prepare us to look at Abraham in Romans.

  19. The second reason is that Abraham's story allows us to ask the question,

  20. what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  21. Last week, we were in chapter 20.

  22. We saw this sort of counterintuitive contrast between good pagans and bad Christians.

  23. Abraham doesn't fear God in that episode.

  24. Abimelech, a pagan king, does.

  25. This week, chapter 21, we're going to have three different scenes.

  26. And those three scenes have one thread that go through all of them,

  27. which is God's great blessing and provision.

  28. And in case you're getting worried with three scenes,

  29. we're going to spend a lot of time on the first scene,

  30. some time on the second scene,

  31. a very small amount of time on the third scene.

  32. With that, I invite you to turn with me to God's Word, Genesis chapter 21.

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  33. You can turn in your Bible.

  34. You can turn on your phone.

  35. You can turn in your worship guide.

  36. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  37. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold,

  38. even the finest gold,

  39. and it's sweeter than honey,

  40. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  41. So that's why we read now Genesis chapter 21,

    Genesis 21 chapter mention

  42. starting at verse 1.

  43. The Lord visited Sarah as He had said,

  44. and the Lord did to Sarah as He had promised.

  45. And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age,

  46. at the time of which God had spoken to him.

  47. Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him,

  48. whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.

  49. And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old,

  50. as God had commanded him.

  51. Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him.

  52. And Sarah said,

  53. God has made laughter for me.

  54. Everyone who hears will laugh over me.

  55. And she said,

  56. Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children?

  57. Yet I have born him a son in his old age.

  58. Verse 8.

  59. And the child grew and was weaned,

  60. and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

  61. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian,

  62. whom she had born to Abraham, laughing.

  63. So she said to Abraham,

  64. Cast out this slave woman with her son,

  65. for the son of this slave woman shall not be heir with my son Isaac.

  66. And the thing was very displeasing to Abraham on account of his son.

  67. But God said to Abraham,

  68. Be not displeased because of the boy and because of your slave woman.

  69. Whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you,

  70. for through Isaac shall your offspring be named.

  71. And I will make a nation of the son of a slave woman also,

  72. because he is your offspring.

  73. So Abraham rose early in the morning and took bread and a skin of water

  74. and gave it to Hagar,

  75. putting it on her shoulder along with the child and sent her away.

  76. And she departed and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

  77. Verse 15.

  78. When the water and the skin was gone,

  79. she put the child under one of the bushes.

  80. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off,

  81. about the distance of a bow shot.

  82. For she said,

  83. Let me not look on the death of the child.

  84. And as she sat opposite with him,

  85. she lifted up her voice and wept.

  86. And God heard the voice of the boy.

  87. And the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven and said to her,

  88. What troubles you, Hagar?

  89. Fear not, for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is.

  90. Up, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand,

  91. for I will make him into a great nation.

  92. Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water.

  93. And she went and filled the skin with water and gave the boy a drink.

  94. And God was with the boy and he grew up.

  95. He lived in the wilderness and became an expert with the bow.

  96. He lived in the wilderness of Paran and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

  97. Verse 22.

  98. Verse 22.

  99. When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized,

  100. Abimelech said,

  101. I do not know who has done this thing.

  102. You did not tell me,

  103. and I have not heard of it until today.

  104. So Abraham took sheep and oxen and gave them to Abimelech,

  105. and the two men made a covenant.

  106. Abraham set seven ewe lambs of the flock apart.

  107. And Abimelech said to Abraham,

  108. What is the meaning of these seven ewe lambs that you have set apart?

  109. He said, These seven ewe lambs you will take from my hand,

  110. that this may be a witness for me that I dug this well.

  111. Therefore that place was called Beersheba,

  112. because there both of them swore an oath.

  113. So they made a covenant at Beersheba.

  114. Then Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army,

  115. rose up and returned to the land of the Philistines.

  116. Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba

  117. and called there on the name of the Lord, the everlasting God.

  118. And Abraham sojourned many days in the land of the Philistines.

  119. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  120. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and thank you

  121. for gathering us here together as your people.

  122. We thank you even more that your word comes and brings dead things to life.

  123. It comes where there's nothing and it creates new creation.

  124. Father, we thank you that that's true,

  125. that your word created new things at the beginning of the world,

  126. creates new life in us as well.

  127. And we ask that you would do that this morning,

  128. that you would pour out your Holy Spirit,

  129. that you'd be at work in our hearts here and now in a special way,

  130. melting and softening them,

  131. making them tender to you and your word and your ways.

  132. That most of all, they would be drawn more and more to Jesus,

  133. that we would see him as more beautiful and more glorious.

  134. We ask all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  135. Amen.

  136. Amen.

  137. We have a lot of visitors here this morning.

  138. So thankfully, I'm going to tell you that if you have been with us for a while,

  139. you are aware of the overarching plot of the story of Abraham.

  140. And if you've not been with us, I'll review that for you quickly.

  141. We've taken some side quests,

  142. especially a side quest with the story of Lot.

  143. But there has been this one overarching question,

  144. this major plot that's gone from chapter 11 goes to the end of chapter 25.

  145. And we are kind of getting there with chapter 21.

  146. The question, the tension starting with chapter 12 is this.

  147. Will God keep his promises to Abraham?

  148. Will God keep his promises to Abraham?

  149. And if he does, how will he do it?

  150. Will Abraham and Sarah actually have a child?

  151. Especially Sarah.

  152. Because remember, all the way back in chapter 11,

  153. the first thing we find out about Sarah

  154. is that she is unable to have children.

  155. But there's a promise, right?

  156. Genesis chapter 12, very beginning,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  157. God tells Abraham,

  158. Genesis chapter 15,

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  159. the promise is repeated again.

  160. Your son is going to be the heir.

  161. Your descendants will be as many as the stars.

  162. Then we proceed, chapter 17,

  163. God tells him again,

  164. not just chapter 12,

  165. you'll be the father of a great nation.

  166. No, now in 17,

  167. we find out you're gonna be the father of many nations.

  168. I will make you into nations

  169. and kings shall come from you.

  170. Chapter 17, he reiterates,

  171. the kings are gonna come not from Hagar.

  172. It's not gonna be through Ishmael.

  173. No, it's going to come from Sarah.

  174. And then in 17 and 18,

  175. we just keep plowing in this one direction

  176. and the promise is advanced.

  177. In both chapters, God says to Abraham,

  178. Sarah will have a child next year.

  179. So we're moving chapter 11.

  180. Sarah is not able to have children.

  181. Chapter 17 and 18, it's coming.

  182. It's gonna be in the year.

  183. Meanwhile, the years are ticking by.

  184. So every so often,

  185. you may have caught this,

  186. we are told Abraham's age.

  187. At the very beginning, chapter 12,

  188. Abraham is 75 years old.

  189. Next, chapter 16,

  190. we're told Abraham is 86 years old.

  191. Chapter 17, Abraham is 99 years old.

  192. And then we get here,

  193. this what we just read,

  194. look with me, verse five,

  195. Abraham was 100 years old.

  196. In the last couple months,

  197. we have covered 25 years of Abraham's life.

  198. Which means that Abraham and Sarah

  199. have been waiting for 25 years

  200. for God to do what he said he would do.

  201. Takes us to our first scene here.

  202. After 25 years of waiting,

  203. finally,

  204. finally,

  205. the promised son is here.

  206. We have the birth of Isaac.

  207. And the fact that God has fulfilled his promise

  208. is emphasized multiple times.

  209. Look with me at verse one,

  210. where it's repeated twice.

  211. The Lord visited Sarah

  212. as he had said.

  213. Same verse,

  214. the Lord did to Sarah

  215. as he had promised.

  216. Next verse,

  217. verse two,

  218. at the time of which God had spoken to him.

  219. This is a reference back to chapter 17 and 18,

  220. which said,

  221. in one year,

  222. Sarah will give birth.

  223. The point is this.

  224. After 25 years,

  225. God did what he said he would do.

  226. And not only did God do

  227. what he said he would do,

  228. God did it

  229. when he said he would do it.

  230. God has done what he said he would do.

  231. And he did it

  232. when he said he would do it.

  233. God has honored his promise.

  234. And so Sarah's laugh of cynicism

  235. turns into a laugh of joy.

  236. Look with me at verse six.

  237. And Sarah said,

  238. God has made laughter for me.

  239. Everyone who hears

  240. will laugh over me.

  241. We have been set up

  242. for that verse

  243. for several chapters now.

  244. Remember Genesis chapter 17,

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  245. God comes to Abraham,

  246. reaffirms that Abraham's gonna be

  247. the father of many nations.

  248. And Abraham says,

  249. hey, can't Ishmael just take it?

  250. Do we really have to do this thing

  251. where Sarah gives birth in her old age?

  252. Remember God says,

  253. yeah, it's gonna be Sarah's son

  254. and you're gonna call his name Isaac.

  255. What does Isaac mean?

  256. Isaac means laugh.

  257. So 17, Sarah's gonna have a son.

  258. His name means laugh,

  259. laughter.

  260. Genesis 18,

  261. remember Sarah overhears

  262. the conversation between Abraham and God.

  263. And what does she do

  264. when she hears that she is going

  265. to have a son in her old age?

  266. She laughs.

  267. But it's a laugh

  268. of bitterness,

  269. of cynicism,

  270. of disappointment.

  271. Right?

  272. Now,

  273. a laugh of hope,

  274. joy,

  275. and relief.

  276. 25 years

  277. in the making.

  278. God has fulfilled his promise.

  279. He's honored his word.

  280. Sarah's cynicism

  281. is turned

  282. to joy.

  283. If you're familiar

  284. with the Bible,

  285. you know right about

  286. the middle of the Bible

  287. there's the book of Psalms.

  288. And the book of Psalms

  289. is the Old Testament

  290. prayer book

  291. or song book

  292. of God's people.

  293. And depending on

  294. how you do the count,

  295. some people say

  296. a third of the Psalms,

  297. that's the conservative count,

  298. some people say

  299. a half of the Psalms

  300. are songs of lament.

  301. So they're songs

  302. of God's people

  303. crying out to him

  304. in sorrow

  305. saying,

  306. God,

  307. how long?

  308. Why does the world

  309. have to be broken

  310. in this way?

  311. How long

  312. till you bring justice

  313. and punish our enemies?

  314. How long

  315. till you heal

  316. and restore

  317. the things

  318. that have been broken?

  319. But then,

  320. the last five Psalms

  321. have zero

  322. laments.

  323. The last five Psalms

  324. all start

  325. and end

  326. with these cries

  327. of hallelujah.

  328. They are Psalms

  329. of incredible joy

  330. and praise.

  331. And there's a man

  332. who's a great scholar

  333. in the Psalms,

  334. this is on page seven

  335. of your worship guide,

  336. who comments on this

  337. explaining why the Psalms,

  338. which are filled

  339. with lament,

  340. end in praise.

  341. The Psalms

  342. are a miniature

  343. of our story

  344. as a whole,

  345. which will end

  346. in unbroken

  347. blessing

  348. and delight.

  349. This is what's happened

  350. with Abraham and Sarah.

  351. 25 years

  352. of doubt

  353. and frustration

  354. and cynicism

  355. and wondering,

  356. God's made a promise,

  357. we don't see

  358. any progress.

  359. Where does it end?

  360. It ends closer

  361. to this,

  362. unbroken

  363. blessing

  364. and delight.

  365. Of course,

  366. there's still challenges,

  367. right?

  368. We'll see some of those

  369. in the next chapters.

  370. The story is not

  371. totally over for them.

  372. They will not have

  373. unbroken blessing

  374. and delight

  375. now in this life.

  376. ultimately

  377. in the life

  378. to come.

  379. But why is that?

  380. Why is it

  381. that we have confidence

  382. that the story

  383. ends that way?

  384. It's very simple.

  385. It's a simple point

  386. about God's character.

  387. The character of God

  388. is such

  389. that he always

  390. keeps his promises.

  391. Why does it end

  392. in unbroken

  393. blessing

  394. and delight?

  395. Because God

  396. is a promise

  397. keeping God.

  398. God ultimately

  399. and finally

  400. keeps his promises

  401. to Abraham

  402. and Sarah.

  403. Christian,

  404. God ultimately

  405. and finally

  406. keeps his promises

  407. to you.

  408. but

  409. he keeps

  410. those promises

  411. on his own

  412. timetable,

  413. right?

  414. Verse 2,

  415. at the time

  416. of which God

  417. had spoken

  418. to him,

  419. God decided

  420. it was going

  421. to take

  422. 25 years.

  423. And so it's

  424. tempting,

  425. right,

  426. to stray

  427. and come up

  428. with our own

  429. plan.

  430. That's what we

  431. saw Abraham

  432. and Sarah

  433. do in chapter

  434. 16.

  435. They've had

  436. years of

  437. doubt,

  438. second guessing

  439. God's plan

  440. A with their

  441. own plan

  442. B.

  443. And I want

  444. you to imagine

  445. with me for a

  446. second,

  447. what could

  448. have been

  449. different?

  450. What would

  451. have been

  452. different if

  453. Sarah had

  454. hoped and

  455. trusted in

  456. God's word

  457. from the

  458. beginning?

  459. We wouldn't

  460. have had to

  461. have chapter

  462. 16,

  463. right?

  464. She wouldn't

  465. have had to

  466. go to Abraham

  467. and say,

  468. you know

  469. what,

  470. let's have

  471. a child

  472. through my

  473. servant

  474. Hagar.

  475. She could

  476. have skipped

  477. all the

  478. bitterness,

  479. all the

  480. pain that

  481. that brought

  482. her.

  483. Imagine if

  484. Abraham

  485. had had this

  486. unshakable

  487. trust in

  488. God's word.

  489. There would

  490. have been no

  491. lying to

  492. Pharaoh,

  493. chapter 12.

  494. There would

  495. have been no

  496. lying to

  497. Abimelech,

  498. last week,

  499. right?

  500. There's so

  501. much pain

  502. and heartbreak

  503. that could

  504. have been

  505. avoided.

  506. Brothers and

  507. sisters,

  508. we also

  509. find ourselves

  510. in a long

  511. obedience.

  512. We also

  513. find ourselves

  514. hoping in

  515. God's word,

  516. tempted to

  517. doubt that

  518. his promises

  519. will come

  520. true.

  521. Maybe you've

  522. been praying

  523. for 10

  524. years,

  525. for a

  526. friend or

  527. a family

  528. member to

  529. come to

  530. know the

  531. Lord,

  532. and you're

  533. tempted just

  534. to turn

  535. away.

  536. Maybe you've

  537. been in a

  538. season of

  539. depression

  540. or chronic

  541. pain,

  542. and you're

  543. not sure how

  544. much longer

  545. you can hold

  546. on.

  547. Maybe you've

  548. been married

  549. for 20

  550. years,

  551. and even

  552. though it's

  553. been 20

  554. years,

  555. the same

  556. arguments come

  557. up again

  558. and again,

  559. and you're

  560. ready to

  561. give up.

  562. Maybe your

  563. parenting has

  564. gotten hard

  565. and discouraging

  566. and you're

  567. tempted to

  568. believe the

  569. lie that

  570. it is too

  571. late,

  572. so it's

  573. time to

  574. check out.

  575. Christian,

  576. hope and

  577. hold on.

  578. God will

  579. keep his

  580. promises to

  581. you.

  582. You may

  583. not do it

  584. on your

  585. timetable.

  586. He will

  587. do it.

  588. His promise

  589. to you,

  590. by the way,

  591. is not that

  592. you will have

  593. a child in

  594. old age.

  595. That was

  596. his promise

  597. to Sarah.

  598. His promise

  599. to you is

  600. not that he

  601. will make you

  602. wealthy in

  603. this life,

  604. but God

  605. has made

  606. promises to

  607. you.

  608. In Psalm

  609. 34,

  610. he's promised

  611. you that he

  612. is close to

  613. the broken

  614. hearted and

  615. that he saves

  616. the crushed

  617. in spirit.

  618. In 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  619. chapter 10,

  620. he's made a

  621. promise to you.

  622. God is

  623. faithful and

  624. he will not

  625. let you be

  626. tempted beyond

  627. your ability.

  628. But with

  629. the temptation,

  630. he will also

  631. provide the

  632. way of escape

  633. that you will

  634. be able to

  635. endure it.

  636. God's made

  637. you a promise

  638. in Psalm

  639. 125.

  640. Those who

  641. trust in the

  642. Lord are like

  643. Mount Zion,

  644. which cannot

  645. be moved,

  646. but abides

  647. forever.

  648. God's made

  649. you a promise

  650. in James

    James 4 chapter mention

  651. chapter 4.

  652. Resist the

  653. devil and

  654. he will flee

  655. from you.

  656. Draw near

  657. to God.

  658. He will

  659. draw near

  660. to you.

  661. He's made

  662. you a promise

  663. in Psalm

  664. 37.

  665. I have

  666. not seen

  667. the righteous

  668. forsaken

  669. or his

  670. children

  671. begging

  672. bread.

  673. He's made

  674. you a promise

  675. in Hebrews

    Hebrews 13 chapter mention

  676. chapter 13.

  677. I will

  678. never leave

  679. you nor

  680. forsake

  681. you.

  682. He's made

  683. you a promise

  684. in Psalm

  685. 23.

  686. Goodness

  687. and mercy

  688. will follow

  689. you all

  690. the days

  691. of your

  692. life.

  693. And you

  694. will dwell

  695. in the

  696. house of

  697. the Lord

  698. forever.

  699. Christian,

  700. God

  701. will do

  702. what he

  703. has

  704. promised.

  705. He may

  706. not do

  707. it on

  708. your

  709. timeline

  710. and he

  711. may not

  712. meet your

  713. deadline.

  714. He

  715. will

  716. do

  717. it.

  718. Hope

  719. and hold

  720. on.

  721. God

  722. makes

  723. and

  724. keeps

  725. Of course,

  726. we don't

  727. want to be

  728. so heavenly

  729. minded that

  730. we're of no

  731. earthly good,

  732. as the saying

  733. goes.

  734. We have to be

  735. engaged in the

  736. work that God

  737. has for us

  738. here and

  739. now,

  740. but the way

  741. that we

  742. make it

  743. is that we

  744. never forget

  745. where we're

  746. going.

  747. God makes

  748. and keeps

  749. his promises.

  750. He makes

  751. and keeps

  752. them in

  753. this life

  754. and in

  755. the life

  756. to come.

  757. Of course,

  758. it's our

  759. Lord Jesus

  760. who tells

  761. us the

  762. same thing.

  763. God already

  764. read this for

  765. us this

  766. morning.

  767. This is page

  768. three from

  769. Matthew chapter

  770. six.

  771. For the

  772. Gentiles seek

  773. after these

  774. things,

  775. and your

  776. heavenly

  777. Father knows

  778. that you

  779. need them

  780. all.

  781. But seek

  782. first the

  783. kingdom of

  784. God and

  785. his righteousness,

  786. and all

  787. these things

  788. will be

  789. added to

  790. you.

  791. Therefore,

  792. do not be

  793. anxious about

  794. tomorrow,

  795. for tomorrow

  796. will be

  797. anxious for

  798. itself.

  799. Sufficient

  800. for the

  801. day is

  802. its own

  803. trouble.

  804. Okay, we

  805. have two

  806. more scenes,

  807. and I'm

  808. just going to

  809. very briefly

  810. those two

  811. scenes point

  812. out again

  813. God's

  814. faithfulness

  815. to his

  816. promises.

  817. That's the

  818. theme of

  819. this chapter.

  820. First, we

  821. have the

  822. scene with

  823. Ishmael.

  824. You may

  825. have been

  826. tracking that

  827. in 2023,

  828. Prince

  829. Harry came

  830. out with

  831. his book

  832. called

  833. Spare,

  834. which included

  835. his grievances

  836. against the

  837. royal family,

  838. and the

  839. reason he

  840. called it

  841. Spare,

  842. it was in

  843. contrast to

  844. the word

  845. heir.

  846. So he's in

  847. contrast to

  848. Prince William,

  849. who's the

  850. firstborn,

  851. that's the

  852. heir,

  853. the second

  854. born is

  855. the spare,

  856. the idea

  857. is, well,

  858. if something

  859. happens to

  860. the firstborn,

  861. we've got to

  862. back up.

  863. Right?

  864. That is what

  865. is going on

  866. with Ishmael

  867. and Isaac,

  868. except it's

  869. reversed.

  870. Ishmael is

  871. the spare,

  872. even though

  873. he's firstborn.

  874. The reason

  875. he's the spare,

  876. even though he's

  877. the firstborn,

  878. is he's born

  879. through Hagar,

  880. not Sarah.

  881. But as the

  882. spare,

  883. he's still a

  884. little bit of

  885. a threat.

  886. Not only is he a

  887. little bit of a

  888. threat, but he is

  889. threatened,

  890. right?

  891. Isaac means he's

  892. not going to be

  893. the one.

  894. Verse 12,

  895. for through

  896. Isaac shall your

  897. offspring be

  898. named.

  899. Verse 8,

  900. there's this big

  901. party thrown for

  902. Isaac.

  903. He's weaned.

  904. This is a big

  905. deal in the

  906. ancient Near

  907. Eastern world

  908. because infancy

  909. has high

  910. infant mortality.

  911. And so if you

  912. make it to this

  913. point, your odds

  914. of making it

  915. farther are

  916. really good.

  917. The celebration

  918. is this,

  919. the air is

  920. going to be

  921. the air.

  922. What's not

  923. stated is the

  924. spare is going

  925. to be the

  926. spare.

  927. And so verse

  928. 9, Ishmael,

  929. now a teenager,

  930. begins laughing,

  931. continuing the

  932. wordplay,

  933. laughing here

  934. does not mean

  935. laughing with

  936. joy.

  937. This is not

  938. Sarah's laugh.

  939. This is a

  940. mocking laugh.

  941. He's making

  942. fun of

  943. Isaac.

  944. The apostle

  945. Paul clarifies

  946. this for us

  947. writing in the

  948. New Testament

  949. in Galatians 4.

  950. He says,

  951. Ishmael

  952. persecuted

  953. Isaac.

  954. So there's

  955. some bullying

  956. going on here.

  957. This party

  958. ratifies what

  959. was always

  960. true.

  961. Ishmael

  962. ain't it.

  963. Isaac

  964. is the

  965. real deal.

  966. And so

  967. verse 10,

  968. he's sent

  969. away.

  970. Verse 11,

  971. this tears

  972. Abraham's heart

  973. apart because

  974. at the end

  975. of the day

  976. it's still

  977. his son.

  978. Verse 12,

  979. God says,

  980. do it.

  981. Do it

  982. because Isaac

  983. is the one

  984. through whom

  985. the blessed

  986. line will

  987. come.

  988. And

  989. God

  990. keeps

  991. his promise.

  992. Remember

  993. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  994. 17,

  995. Abraham had

  996. said,

  997. can't it

  998. just be

  999. Ishmael?

  1000. That's going

  1001. to make

  1002. life so

  1003. easy.

  1004. And in

  1005. 17,

  1006. God says,

  1007. look,

  1008. I'm going

  1009. to make

  1010. Ishmael

  1011. into a

  1012. great nation.

  1013. Ishmael's

  1014. not forgotten.

  1015. Same thing

  1016. here.

  1017. Verse 13

  1018. of this chapter,

  1019. I will

  1020. make a

  1021. nation of

  1022. the son

  1023. of the

  1024. slave woman

  1025. also because

  1026. he is

  1027. your

  1028. offspring.

  1029. So

  1030. Ishmael

  1031. is sent

  1032. away.

  1033. God

  1034. provides,

  1035. he provides

  1036. water,

  1037. saves

  1038. Ishmael's

  1039. life.

  1040. Yes,

  1041. the line

  1042. will not

  1043. continue

  1044. through Israel

  1045. and God

  1046. will keep

  1047. his promise.

  1048. Verse 20,

  1049. God was

  1050. with the

  1051. boy and

  1052. he grew

  1053. up.

  1054. God

  1055. will do

  1056. what he

  1057. said he

  1058. will do.

  1059. Keeps

  1060. promise about

  1061. Ishmael,

  1062. he also

  1063. keeps his

  1064. promise with

  1065. Abimelech.

  1066. Remember,

  1067. Abimelech is

  1068. just here in

  1069. the last

  1070. chapter,

  1071. he's this

  1072. pagan king

  1073. and he

  1074. comes to

  1075. make a

  1076. treaty.

  1077. Why?

  1078. Why does

  1079. Abimelech want

  1080. to make a

  1081. treaty with

  1082. Abraham?

  1083. Verse 22,

  1084. he tells us

  1085. why.

  1086. God is

  1087. with you

  1088. in all

  1089. that you

  1090. do.

  1091. Why is

  1092. God with

  1093. Abraham in

  1094. all that

  1095. he does?

  1096. Because

  1097. God made

  1098. a promise

  1099. in Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1100. chapter 12.

  1101. Remember

  1102. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1103. chapter 12,

  1104. he said,

  1105. I will

  1106. bless you

  1107. and make

  1108. your name

  1109. great.

  1110. What is

  1111. Abimelech

  1112. see?

  1113. Abimelech

  1114. sees that

  1115. God has

  1116. blessed

  1117. Abraham

  1118. and made

  1119. his name

  1120. great.

  1121. Also in

  1122. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1123. chapter 12,

  1124. God says

  1125. this,

  1126. I will

  1127. bless

  1128. those

  1129. who

  1130. bless

  1131. you

  1132. and

  1133. him

  1134. who

  1135. dishonors

  1136. you

  1137. I

  1138. will

  1139. curse.

  1140. What's

  1141. Abimelech

  1142. doing?

  1143. He wants

  1144. to get

  1145. the blessing

  1146. that comes

  1147. from blessing

  1148. Abraham.

  1149. God

  1150. will do

  1151. what he

  1152. said

  1153. he would

  1154. do.

  1155. The first

  1156. scene,

  1157. he's kept

  1158. his promise

  1159. about

  1160. the

  1161. son.

  1162. The last

  1163. scene,

  1164. he's

  1165. showing

  1166. he's

  1167. kept

  1168. his promise

  1169. about

  1170. the

  1171. blessing.

  1172. It's all

  1173. coming

  1174. together.

  1175. What God

  1176. promised

  1177. in 12

  1178. and 15

  1179. and 17

  1180. and 18

  1181. and 19,

  1182. here in

  1183. 21,

  1184. he does.

  1185. How do

  1186. we end?

  1187. Verse

  1188. 33,

  1189. Abraham

  1190. worships

  1191. God.

  1192. Why does

  1193. Abraham

  1194. worship

  1195. God?

  1196. Because

  1197. he's the

  1198. everlasting

  1199. God,

  1200. the one

  1201. who keeps

  1202. his

  1203. promises.

  1204. Of course,

  1205. the reason

  1206. that Isaac

  1207. matters

  1208. is Isaac

  1209. is part

  1210. of Abraham's

  1211. line.

  1212. And the

  1213. reason that

  1214. Abraham's

  1215. line matters

  1216. is that

  1217. Abraham's

  1218. line leads

  1219. ultimately

  1220. to Jesus.

  1221. That is

  1222. the greatest

  1223. fulfillment

  1224. of God's

  1225. promise in

  1226. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1227. chapter 12

  1228. that he

  1229. will be

  1230. a blessing

  1231. to the

  1232. nations.

  1233. How is he

  1234. going to

  1235. bless the

  1236. nations?

  1237. He's going

  1238. to bless

  1239. the nations

  1240. fully and

  1241. finally,

  1242. not through

  1243. Isaac,

  1244. not through

  1245. Jacob,

  1246. not through

  1247. Joseph.

  1248. He's going

  1249. to bless

  1250. them through

  1251. our Lord

  1252. and Savior

  1253. Jesus

  1254. Christ.

  1255. The one

  1256. who comes

  1257. as a

  1258. human,

  1259. lives the

  1260. life we

  1261. should have

  1262. lived,

  1263. dies the

  1264. death we

  1265. deserve to

  1266. die.

  1267. So God's

  1268. greatest

  1269. promise is

  1270. kept in

  1271. the greatest

  1272. way.

  1273. He takes

  1274. our sin

  1275. and gives

  1276. us his

  1277. righteousness.

  1278. Why are

  1279. all the

  1280. other promises

  1281. true?

  1282. They're true

  1283. because of

  1284. Jesus' death

  1285. and resurrection.

  1286. Apostle Paul

  1287. tells us this.

  1288. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1:20

  1289. chapter 1

  1290. verse 20

  1291. he says,

  1292. all the

  1293. promises of

  1294. God are

  1295. yes and

  1296. amen in

  1297. Jesus.

  1298. Jesus,

  1299. Jesus,

  1300. how I

  1301. trust him,

  1302. how I've

  1303. proved him,

  1304. or and

  1305. or,

  1306. Jesus,

  1307. Jesus,

  1308. precious

  1309. Jesus,

  1310. oh for

  1311. grace to

  1312. trust him

  1313. more.

  1314. Let's pray.

  1315. Our

  1316. Father in

  1317. heaven,

  1318. we do

  1319. praise you

  1320. and thank

  1321. you that

  1322. you keep
