  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. ! Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good they don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  4. This week and next week, we are finishing our series in the story of Abraham, which you find in the book of Genesis.

  5. The book of Genesis tells the story first of the origin of the world in chapters 1-11 and then in chapters 12-25, it tells the origin story of God's people, his people Israel, which begins with Abraham.

  6. And so that's been our focus as we've been going from the end of chapter 11 to the beginning of chapter 25.

  7. And we're doing that for two reasons. First, to prepare us to go back into our sermon series in the book of Romans.

  8. There we're going to pick up in chapter 4 in just a couple weeks, which tells, again, the story of Abraham.

  9. So we've been looking at Abraham to prepare us to look at Abraham.

  10. We're doing it for a second reason, which is that it allows us to ask this question,

  11. what does it look like to follow God in faith?

  12. Last week, we were in chapter 23, the death of Sarah.

  13. And we saw once again that God did what he said he would do in the burial plot.

  14. He was continuing the process of giving the land that he had promised.

  15. This week, we turn to chapter 24, the story of Isaac and Rebecca.

  16. And I have both good news and bad news for you.

  17. Bad news, this passage is really long.

  18. Good news, this story is really fun.

  19. And so I'm just going to invite you to really get lost in it as we read it.

  20. It's a long passage. It's a rich story.

  21. I am simply not going to be able to say the many number of things that could be said.

  22. So I want you to enjoy the narrative.

  23. We're going to skim the surface.

  24. I'm not going to retell the story very much.

  25. We're just going to draw out a couple truths from this chapter.

  26. We're going to see God's faithfulness.

  27. We're going to see his faithfulness through generations.

  28. We're going to see his faithfulness to Abraham.

  29. We're going to see God's faithfulness through generations.

  30. We're going to see God's faithfulness to Abraham.

  31. It's with that that I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 24.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  32. You'll find it in your worship guide.

  33. You can find it on your phone.

  34. You can find it in your Bible.

  35. No matter where you find it, remember that this is God's word.

  36. Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5 tells us every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  37. He's a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  38. So that's why we read now Genesis chapter 24 starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  39. Now Abraham was old, well advanced in years.

  40. And the Lord had blessed Abraham in all things.

  41. And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household,

  42. who had charge of all that he had,

  43. put your hand under my thigh,

  44. that I may make you swear by the Lord, the God of heaven and God of earth,

  45. that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites,

  46. among whom I dwell,

  47. but will go to my country and to my kindred

  48. and take a wife for my son Isaac.

  49. The servant said to him,

  50. perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land.

  51. Must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?

  52. Abraham said to him,

  53. see to it that you do not take my son back there.

  54. The Lord, the God of heaven,

  55. who took me from my father's house

  56. and from the land of my kindred

  57. and who spoke to me and swore to me

  58. to your offspring I will give this land,

  59. he will send his angel before you

  60. and you shall take a wife for my son from there.

  61. But if the woman is not willing to follow you,

  62. then you will be free from this oath of mine.

  63. Only you must not take my son back there.

  64. So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham, his master,

  65. and swore to him concerning this matter.

  66. Verse 10.

  67. Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed,

  68. taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master.

  69. And he arose and went to Mesopotamia to the city of Nahor.

  70. And he made the camels kneel down outside the city

  71. by the well of water at the time of evening,

  72. the time when women go out to draw water.

  73. And he said,

  74. O Lord, God of my master Abraham,

  75. please grant me success today

  76. and show steadfast love to my master Abraham.

  77. Behold, I am standing by the spring of water

  78. and the daughters of the men of the city

  79. are coming out to draw water.

  80. Let the young woman to whom I shall say,

  81. please let down your jar that I may drink.

  82. And who shall say, drink, and I will water your camels.

  83. Let her be the one whom you have appointed for your servant Isaac.

  84. By this I shall know that you have shown

  85. your steadfast love to my master.

  86. Verse 15.

  87. Before he had finished speaking,

  88. behold, Rebekah,

  89. who was born to Bethuel, the son of Milcah,

  90. the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother,

  91. came out with her water jar on her shoulder.

  92. The young woman was very attractive in appearance,

  93. a maiden whom no man had known.

  94. She went down to the spring

  95. and filled her jar and came up.

  96. Then the servant ran to meet her and said,

  97. please give me a little water to drink from your jar.

  98. She said, drink, my lord.

  99. And she quickly let down her jar upon her hand

  100. and gave him a drink.

  101. When she had finished giving him a drink,

  102. she said, I will draw water for your camels also

  103. until they have finished drinking.

  104. So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough

  105. and ran again to the well to draw water.

  106. And she drew for all his camels.

  107. The man gazed at her in silence

  108. to learn whether the Lord had prospered his journey or not.

  109. Verse 22.

  110. When the camels had finished drinking,

  111. the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel

  112. and two bracelets for her arms weighing 10 gold shekels

  113. and said, please tell me whose daughter you are.

  114. Is there room in your father's house

  115. for us to spend the night?

  116. She said to him,

  117. I am the daughter of Bethuel,

  118. the son of Milcah,

  119. whom she bore to Nahor.

  120. She added,

  121. we have plenty of both straw and fodder

  122. and room to spend the night.

  123. The man bowed his head and worshiped the Lord and said,

  124. blessed be the Lord,

  125. the God of my master Abraham,

  126. who has not forsaken his steadfast love

  127. and his faithfulness toward my master.

  128. As for me,

  129. the Lord has led me in the way

  130. to the house of my master's kinsmen.

  131. Then the young woman ran

  132. and told her mother's household about these things.

  133. Verse 29.

  134. Rebecca had a brother whose name was Laban.

  135. Laban ran out toward the man to the spring.

  136. As soon as he saw the ring and the bracelets

  137. on his sister's arms

  138. and heard the words of Rebecca, his sister,

  139. thus the man spoke to me,

  140. he went to the man.

  141. And behold,

  142. he was standing by the camels at the spring.

  143. He said,

  144. come in,

  145. O blessed of the Lord.

  146. Why do you stand outside?

  147. For I have prepared the house

  148. and a place for the camels.

  149. So the man came to the house

  150. and unharnessed the camels

  151. and gave straw and fodder to the camels.

  152. And there was water to wash his feet

  153. and the feet of the men who were with him.

  154. Then food was set before him to eat.

  155. But he said,

  156. I will not eat until I have said what I have to say.

  157. He said,

  158. speak on.

  159. Verse 34.

  160. So he said,

  161. I am Abraham's servant.

  162. The Lord has greatly blessed my master

  163. and he has become great.

  164. He has given him flocks and herds,

  165. silver and gold,

  166. male servants and female servants.

  167. These,

  168. excuse me,

  169. camels and donkeys.

  170. And Sarah,

  171. my master's wife,

  172. bore a son to my master

  173. when she was old

  174. and to him he has given

  175. all that he has.

  176. My master made me swear,

  177. saying,

  178. you shall not take a wife for my son

  179. from the daughters of the Canaanites

  180. in whose land I dwell.

  181. But you shall go to my father's house

  182. and to my clan

  183. and take a wife for my son.

  184. I said to my master,

  185. perhaps the woman will not follow me.

  186. But he said to me,

  187. the Lord before whom I have walked

  188. will send his angel with you

  189. and prosper your way.

  190. You shall take a wife for my son

  191. from my clan

  192. and from my father's house.

  193. Then you will be free from my oath

  194. and when you come to my clan

  195. and if they will not give her to you,

  196. you will be free from my oath.

  197. Verse 42.

  198. I came today to the spring

  199. and said,

  200. O Lord,

  201. the God of my master Abraham,

  202. if now you are prospering

  203. the way that I go,

  204. behold,

  205. I am standing by the spring of water.

  206. Let the virgin who comes out

  207. to draw water

  208. to whom I shall say,

  209. please give me a little water

  210. from your jar to drink

  211. and who will say to me,

  212. drink and I will draw

  213. for your camels also.

  214. Let her be the woman

  215. whom the Lord has appointed

  216. for my master's son.

  217. Verse 45.

  218. Before I had finished,

  219. speaking in my heart,

  220. behold,

  221. Rebecca came out

  222. with her water on her shoulder

  223. and she went down

  224. to the spring

  225. and drew water.

  226. I said to her,

  227. please let me drink.

  228. She quickly let down her jar

  229. from her shoulder

  230. and said,

  231. drink

  232. and I will give

  233. your camels drink also.

  234. So I drank

  235. and she gave the camels

  236. drink also.

  237. Then I asked her,

  238. whose daughter are you?

  239. She said,

  240. the daughter of Bethuel,

  241. Nahor's son,

  242. who milk aboard to him.

  243. So I put the ring on her nose

  244. and the bracelets on her arms.

  245. Then I bowed my head

  246. and worshiped the Lord

  247. and blessed the Lord,

  248. the God of my master Abraham,

  249. who had led me

  250. by the right way

  251. to take the daughter

  252. of my master's kinsman

  253. for his son.

  254. Now then,

  255. if you are going to show

  256. steadfast love

  257. and faithfulness

  258. to my master,

  259. tell me.

  260. And if not,

  261. tell me,

  262. that I may turn

  263. to the right hand

  264. or to the left.

  265. Verse 50,

  266. Then Laban and Bethuel

  267. answered and said,

  268. The thing has come

  269. from the Lord.

  270. We cannot speak to you

  271. bad or good.

  272. Behold,

  273. Rebecca is before you.

  274. Take her and go

  275. and let her be

  276. the wife of your master's son

  277. as the Lord has spoken.

  278. When Abraham's servant

  279. heard their words,

  280. he bowed himself

  281. to the earth

  282. before the Lord.

  283. And the servant

  284. brought out jewelry

  285. of silver and of gold

  286. and garments

  287. and gave them to Rebecca.

  288. He also gave

  289. to her brother

  290. and to her mother

  291. costly ornaments.

  292. And he and the men

  293. who were with him

  294. ate and drank

  295. and they spent

  296. the night there.

  297. When they arose

  298. in the morning,

  299. he said,

  300. Send me away

  301. to my master.

  302. Her brother

  303. and her mother said,

  304. Let the young woman

  305. remain with us a while,

  306. at least ten days.

  307. After that,

  308. she may go.

  309. But he said to them,

  310. Do not delay me

  311. since the Lord

  312. has prospered my way.

  313. Send me away

  314. that I may go

  315. to my master.

  316. They said,

  317. Let us call

  318. the young woman

  319. and ask her.

  320. And they called Rebecca

  321. and said to her,

  322. Will you go

  323. with this man?

  324. She said,

  325. I will go.

  326. So they sent away

  327. Rebecca their sister

  328. and her nurse

  329. and Abraham's servant

  330. and his men.

  331. And they blessed Rebecca

  332. and said to her,

  333. Our sister,

  334. may you become

  335. thousands of ten thousands

  336. and may your offspring

  337. possess the gate

  338. of those who hate him.

  339. Then Rebecca

  340. and her young women

  341. arose and rode

  342. on the camels

  343. and followed the man.

  344. Thus the servant

  345. took Rebecca

  346. and went on his way.

  347. Now Isaac had returned

  348. from Bir Lahai Roy

  349. and was dwelling

  350. in the Negev.

  351. And Isaac went out

  352. to meditate

  353. in the field

  354. toward evening.

  355. And he lifted up

  356. his eyes and saw

  357. and behold,

  358. there were camels coming.

  359. And Rebecca

  360. lifted up her eyes

  361. and when she saw Isaac,

  362. she dismounted

  363. from the camel

  364. and said to the servant,

  365. Who is that man

  366. walking in the field

  367. to meet us?

  368. The servant said,

  369. It is my master.

  370. So she took her veil

  371. and covered herself.

  372. And the servant

  373. told Isaac

  374. all the things

  375. that he had done.

  376. Then Isaac brought her

  377. into the tent

  378. of Sarah his mother

  379. and took Rebecca

  380. and she became his wife

  381. and he loved her.

  382. So Isaac was comforted

  383. after his mother's death.

  384. I invite you to pray

  385. as we come to this portion

  386. of God's word.

  387. Our Father in heaven,

  388. we do praise you

  389. and thank you

  390. for your providence

  391. and work in this world

  392. that you arrange

  393. all things

  394. for our good

  395. and for your glory.

  396. We ask that you would do that

  397. with this passage

  398. this morning,

  399. that you would

  400. open our eyes

  401. once again

  402. to see

  403. your great mercy

  404. and work

  405. in our lives

  406. and in the world

  407. that we would grow

  408. in our wonder

  409. and our love for you.

  410. We ask these things

  411. in the mighty name

  412. of Jesus Christ.

  413. Amen.

  414. Amen.

  415. If you

  416. ever go to the theater

  417. and you watch a movie,

  418. you know

  419. that it can be,

  420. well, maybe you know,

  421. a little bit dangerous

  422. to walk out

  423. right as the credits

  424. are starting.

  425. Although that's

  426. what some people do.

  427. And it's dangerous

  428. to walk out

  429. when the credits

  430. are starting

  431. because you never know

  432. if there's going

  433. to be another scene.

  434. Right?

  435. Sometimes in the middle

  436. of the credits

  437. a scene appears,

  438. sometimes after

  439. the credits.

  440. You know,

  441. a teaser for the next

  442. movie appears.

  443. This is called

  444. a stinger

  445. or a credit cookie.

  446. Happens all the time.

  447. You can find a list

  448. of every single one

  449. documented on Wikipedia.

  450. Last year,

  451. this happened

  452. in Captain America,

  453. Brave New World,

  454. which I know

  455. all of you watched.

  456. Captain America

  457. defeats the Red Hulk.

  458. The credits roll.

  459. And after the credits,

  460. this villain,

  461. Sam Stern,

  462. shows up

  463. to talk to Captain America

  464. and he tells him,

  465. by the way,

  466. there are other worlds.

  467. There's a whole multiverse.

  468. You thought you defeated

  469. the Red Hulk

  470. and it was all good?

  471. No,

  472. there's probably going to be

  473. other threats

  474. from other universes.

  475. So you've won that battle.

  476. The war isn't over.

  477. And even more importantly,

  478. not only is the war not over,

  479. there will be another movie.

  480. Right?

  481. That's the point.

  482. Here,

  483. as we're coming near

  484. the end of the Abraham story,

  485. we are in the middle

  486. of the credits.

  487. Okay?

  488. It started last week

  489. with the death of Sarah.

  490. Chapter 22

  491. is kind of the end

  492. of the Abraham story, right?

  493. Chapter 21,

  494. Isaac is born.

  495. Wow,

  496. the tension that's driven

  497. the entire plot

  498. is finally resolved.

  499. Chapter 22,

  500. we have this final test.

  501. You know,

  502. is Abraham going to remain faithful

  503. when God asks him

  504. for such a sacrifice?

  505. Then last week,

  506. chapter 23,

  507. the death of Sarah.

  508. Next week,

  509. chapter 25,

  510. the death of Abraham.

  511. It's all over.

  512. Except.

  513. Right?

  514. Except.

  515. The battle for Abraham

  516. is over.

  517. over.

  518. The war is not.

  519. Remember,

  520. God made this promise

  521. in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  522. which was then repeated.

  523. You're going to be

  524. the father of many nations.

  525. And the question was,

  526. how is this going to happen

  527. when I'm so old

  528. and Sarah's so old

  529. and she's not going to be able

  530. to have children?

  531. And so all of that

  532. drives us to the birth of Isaac

  533. and Isaac is finally born.

  534. Great.

  535. Abraham is still

  536. not a great nation.

  537. And that will only happen

  538. if Isaac himself

  539. marries

  540. and has children.

  541. And so we are not even close

  542. to the end

  543. of the story.

  544. The death of Sarah, though,

  545. signals this transition,

  546. this passing of the baton

  547. off to the next generation.

  548. Unless the Lord returns,

  549. every single one of us

  550. will exit stage left.

  551. There is a sense in which

  552. my job

  553. is to prepare this church

  554. for its next pastor.

  555. And there is a sense in which

  556. it is our job

  557. to prepare this church

  558. for the next congregation.

  559. This church was founded

  560. in 1996.

  561. And there are only

  562. two people in the room

  563. right now

  564. who were there.

  565. Abraham's story

  566. is over.

  567. Look what it tells us

  568. in verse 1.

  569. Abraham was old,

  570. advanced in years.

  571. Abraham's story is over.

  572. There is still work

  573. to be done.

  574. Abraham's story is over.

  575. The mission

  576. is not complete.

  577. This particular challenge

  578. has ended.

  579. There is still

  580. so much more

  581. to do.

  582. Point is this.

  583. The challenge

  584. of faith

  585. continues

  586. generation

  587. to generation.

  588. The challenge

  589. of faith

  590. continues

  591. generation

  592. to generation.

  593. It continues

  594. your entire

  595. life.

  596. Yes,

  597. verse 1 is true.

  598. Abraham is old.

  599. But

  600. Abraham's work

  601. is not

  602. done.

  603. Abraham is old.

  604. His work

  605. is not done.

  606. You know this

  607. in your own life

  608. if you've lived

  609. long enough.

  610. It never

  611. stops.

  612. Okay,

  613. you reach retirement.

  614. Great.

  615. time to raise

  616. up the next

  617. generation.

  618. You raised

  619. your kids.

  620. Great.

  621. And then

  622. what happens

  623. next?

  624. Your kids

  625. have kids.

  626. The work

  627. does not

  628. end.

  629. Maybe your kids

  630. love the Lord,

  631. right,

  632. and you have a

  633. sigh of relief.

  634. It's not over.

  635. Well,

  636. their kids

  637. rise up

  638. to know

  639. the Lord.

  640. And maybe

  641. they do.

  642. Maybe you're

  643. like my

  644. grandmother.

  645. You have

  646. multiple

  647. great

  648. grandchildren,

  649. right?

  650. And so

  651. the question

  652. begins

  653. all over

  654. again.

  655. One generation

  656. stands for

  657. truth and

  658. wins the

  659. battle.

  660. And it

  661. can be

  662. all

  663. lost

  664. by the

  665. next.

  666. The

  667. basketball

  668. player

  669. J.J.

  670. Reddick

  671. says,

  672. you never

  673. arrive,

  674. you are

  675. always

  676. becoming.

  677. And I'll

  678. change that

  679. quote to

  680. this.

  681. You never

  682. arrive,

  683. you're always

  684. following God

  685. in faith.

  686. Never

  687. arrive,

  688. you're always

  689. following God

  690. in faith.

  691. And that's

  692. discouraging

  693. news in a

  694. sense,

  695. right,

  696. to say,

  697. well,

  698. it's never

  699. over.

  700. You might

  701. think,

  702. no,

  703. I was

  704. hoping it

  705. would end

  706. at some

  707. point,

  708. right?

  709. I was

  710. hoping at

  711. some

  712. point I

  713. could put

  714. my feet

  715. up.

  716. It's

  717. discouraging

  718. news unless

  719. until we

  720. remember a

  721. greater truth.

  722. Yes,

  723. it's true

  724. that you've

  725. never arrived.

  726. It is

  727. also true

  728. that God

  729. is faithful

  730. again and

  731. again.

  732. God is

  733. faithful

  734. generation

  735. to

  736. generation.

  737. Your

  738. challenges

  739. in this

  740. life do

  741. not

  742. end.

  743. Neither

  744. does

  745. God's

  746. faithfulness.

  747. And that's

  748. what we see

  749. in this

  750. story.

  751. In every

  752. step,

  753. God is

  754. at work

  755. guiding

  756. Abraham's

  757. servant.

  758. One of the

  759. key words

  760. that appears

  761. over and

  762. over here

  763. is this

  764. idea of

  765. success or

  766. prospering.

  767. So track

  768. with me here

  769. for a second.

  770. You have

  771. verse 12.

  772. He said,

  773. O Lord,

  774. God of my

  775. master Abraham,

  776. please grant

  777. me success.

  778. The servant

  779. realizes God's

  780. going to have

  781. to show up

  782. for this to

  783. work.

  784. If his

  785. promises will

  786. be fulfilled

  787. and generation

  788. to generation

  789. will continue

  790. until Abraham

  791. becomes the

  792. father of

  793. many nations,

  794. God must

  795. act.

  796. So that's

  797. his prayer

  798. in verse 12.

  799. Then we get

  800. to verse 21.

  801. The man

  802. gazed at her

  803. in silence

  804. to learn

  805. whether the

  806. Lord had

  807. prospered his

  808. journey or

  809. not.

  810. So it's the

  811. same question,

  812. right?

  813. We could talk

  814. all day about

  815. the servant

  816. and his

  817. faithfulness

  818. and that

  819. would be

  820. true.

  821. But what

  822. is more

  823. true and

  824. more important

  825. is God's

  826. work and

  827. God's

  828. faithfulness.

  829. It keeps

  830. going through

  831. all that we

  832. read.

  833. Verse 40.

  834. He said

  835. to me,

  836. the Lord

  837. before whom

  838. I have

  839. walked will

  840. send his

  841. angel with

  842. you and

  843. prosper your

  844. way.

  845. Verse 42.

  846. And if

  847. now you are

  848. prospering the

  849. way that I

  850. go.

  851. Go with

  852. me to

  853. verse 36.

  854. 56.

  855. He said

  856. to them,

  857. do not delay

  858. me since the

  859. Lord has

  860. prospered my

  861. way.

  862. And why

  863. is God

  864. prospering

  865. his way?

  866. Well,

  867. there's

  868. another word

  869. that appears

  870. over and

  871. over.

  872. The servant

  873. keeps returning

  874. to God's

  875. steadfast love.

  876. Remember,

  877. we've talked

  878. about this

  879. before.

  880. It's the

  881. Hebrew word

  882. hesed,

  883. which the

  884. children's

  885. storybook

  886. Bible tells

  887. us means

  888. God's

  889. never ending,

  890. never stopping,

  891. never giving

  892. up, always

  893. and forever

  894. love.

  895. So go back

  896. again to

  897. verse 12.

  898. We looked

  899. at this just

  900. a second

  901. ago.

  902. Please grant

  903. me success

  904. today and

  905. show

  906. steadfast

  907. love.

  908. Verse 14,

  909. he gives

  910. this prayer.

  911. The end

  912. of verse

  913. 14,

  914. by this

  915. I shall

  916. know that

  917. you have

  918. shown

  919. steadfast

  920. love.

  921. Verse 27,

  922. blessed

  923. be the

  924. Lord,

  925. the God

  926. of my

  927. master

  928. Abraham,

  929. who has

  930. not

  931. forsaken

  932. his

  933. steadfast

  934. love.

  935. God

  936. is

  937. faithful.

  938. God

  939. is more

  940. faithful

  941. still.

  942. There's

  943. tons of

  944. faith here.

  945. It only

  946. works

  947. because of

  948. God's

  949. faithfulness.

  950. God's

  951. faithfulness

  952. to honor

  953. his promise,

  954. to continue

  955. the line

  956. that he's

  957. begun.

  958. Of course,

  959. it happens,

  960. right,

  961. because the

  962. servant actually

  963. finds a

  964. wife.

  965. It actually

  966. works.

  967. He goes

  968. out,

  969. gets what

  970. he needs.

  971. If you've

  972. been with

  973. us,

  974. I don't

  975. need to

  976. tell you

  977. at this

  978. point that

  979. one of

  980. the major

  981. themes of

  982. Abraham's

  983. story is

  984. God's

  985. faithfulness to

  986. his promises.

  987. What we've

  988. been saying

  989. over and

  990. over,

  991. that God

  992. will do

  993. what he

  994. said he's

  995. going to

  996. do.

  997. And you

  998. might be

  999. thinking at

  1000. this point,

  1001. well,

  1002. you know,

  1003. why are

  1004. we still

  1005. just saying

  1006. the same

  1007. thing over

  1008. and over?

  1009. You know,

  1010. you get to

  1011. this point

  1012. sometimes when

  1013. you're in a

  1014. narrative and

  1015. you think the

  1016. preacher doesn't

  1017. have a new

  1018. point,

  1019. right?

  1020. He's just

  1021. repeating the

  1022. same thing

  1023. over and

  1024. over.

  1025. Here we are

  1026. talking about

  1027. God's

  1028. faithfulness

  1029. again,

  1030. but there's

  1031. a specific

  1032. angle and

  1033. detail that

  1034. we're zoned

  1035. in on,

  1036. and it's

  1037. this.

  1038. Not God's

  1039. faithfulness

  1040. in general,

  1041. but his

  1042. faithfulness

  1043. throughout

  1044. the ages.

  1045. God's

  1046. faithfulness

  1047. generation

  1048. after

  1049. generation.

  1050. And so

  1051. we're not

  1052. just talking

  1053. about God's

  1054. faithfulness

  1055. to his

  1056. promises to

  1057. you in

  1058. particular as

  1059. a Christian,

  1060. which we've

  1061. covered before.

  1062. We are

  1063. talking about

  1064. his faithfulness

  1065. to his

  1066. church until

  1067. the end of

  1068. the age.

  1069. I don't

  1070. know if

  1071. Cheyenne

  1072. Mountain

  1073. Presbyterian

  1074. Church will

  1075. exist until

  1076. the end of

  1077. the world.

  1078. I hope

  1079. it does.

  1080. I don't

  1081. have any

  1082. reason to

  1083. believe it

  1084. won't,

  1085. but I do

  1086. know this.

  1087. God's

  1088. church,

  1089. his

  1090. capital

  1091. C

  1092. church,

  1093. will

  1094. not

  1095. fail.

  1096. And I

  1097. know that

  1098. because of

  1099. the character

  1100. of God

  1101. and the

  1102. promises

  1103. that he's

  1104. made.

  1105. Eight years

  1106. ago,

  1107. in the

  1108. summer of

  1109. 2017,

  1110. I told you

  1111. guys a story,

  1112. almost none

  1113. of you were

  1114. here back

  1115. then,

  1116. about how

  1117. when I was

  1118. a sophomore

  1119. in college,

  1120. I went on

  1121. this study

  1122. abroad trip,

  1123. a trip to

  1124. the classics

  1125. department at

  1126. my college,

  1127. and so part

  1128. of it was

  1129. focused on

  1130. ancient

  1131. archaeology,

  1132. and we

  1133. had to

  1134. take this

  1135. final exam

  1136. after we'd

  1137. seen all

  1138. of these

  1139. sites across

  1140. the Mediterranean.

  1141. The last

  1142. question on

  1143. the exam

  1144. was this,

  1145. if you're

  1146. an ancient

  1147. building,

  1148. and you

  1149. would like

  1150. to survive

  1151. until the

  1152. modern day,

  1153. what do you

  1154. need to do

  1155. to make sure

  1156. that you make

  1157. it,

  1158. and you don't

  1159. fall down and

  1160. topple?

  1161. the answer

  1162. is this,

  1163. if you're an

  1164. ancient building

  1165. and you want

  1166. to survive,

  1167. you need to be

  1168. used continuously

  1169. as a place of

  1170. Christian worship.

  1171. That's how you

  1172. make it.

  1173. God's people,

  1174. his church,

  1175. his mission,

  1176. transcends and

  1177. outlasts every

  1178. earthly kingdom.

  1179. It is his

  1180. faithfulness,

  1181. generation

  1182. generation after

  1183. generation.

  1184. As you work

  1185. in this world

  1186. to make it

  1187. on earth

  1188. as it is

  1189. in heaven,

  1190. know this,

  1191. God cares

  1192. about that

  1193. more than

  1194. you do.

  1195. God cares

  1196. about it

  1197. more than

  1198. you do.

  1199. God cares

  1200. about this

  1201. church

  1202. more than

  1203. any of us

  1204. does.

  1205. God cares

  1206. about people

  1207. worshiping in

  1208. him and

  1209. following him

  1210. in every

  1211. generation

  1212. more than

  1213. any parent

  1214. in this room

  1215. can.

  1216. God cares

  1217. more than

  1218. you do

  1219. and

  1220. he will

  1221. finish

  1222. what he

  1223. started.

  1224. He'll

  1225. finish

  1226. what he

  1227. started.

  1228. Isaac

  1229. matters

  1230. ultimately

  1231. because of

  1232. the promise,

  1233. right?

  1234. Because of

  1235. the promise,

  1236. Isaac must

  1237. have a wife

  1238. and the

  1239. promise matters

  1240. because it

  1241. is through

  1242. Isaac that

  1243. Jesus ultimately

  1244. is going to

  1245. come.

  1246. Matthew

    Matthew 1 chapter mention

  1247. chapter 1

  1248. when we go

  1249. to the

  1250. New Testament

  1251. we have

  1252. Jesus'

  1253. genealogy

  1254. which starts

  1255. with Abraham.

  1256. It shows

  1257. us how

  1258. God's promise

  1259. is fulfilled

  1260. from Abraham

  1261. all the way

  1262. to Christ.

  1263. Luke

    Luke 1 chapter mention

  1264. chapter 1

  1265. which we

  1266. read this

  1267. morning,

  1268. page 3

  1269. of your

  1270. worship guide.

  1271. You might

  1272. be wondering

  1273. why did

  1274. we read

  1275. Mary's

  1276. song

  1277. when we're

  1278. talking about

  1279. Abraham?

  1280. Well,

  1281. look with

  1282. me what

  1283. she says

  1284. in verse

  1285. 50.

  1286. His mercy

  1287. is for

  1288. those who

  1289. fear him

  1290. from

  1291. generation

  1292. to

  1293. generation.

  1294. Verse

  1295. 54 and

  1296. 55.

  1297. He has

  1298. helped

  1299. his servant

  1300. Israel

  1301. in remembrance

  1302. of his

  1303. mercy

  1304. as he

  1305. spoke to

  1306. our fathers

  1307. to Abraham

  1308. and his

  1309. offspring

  1310. forever.

  1311. brothers

  1312. and sisters,

  1313. it is not

  1314. just or

  1315. simply that

  1316. God will

  1317. do what

  1318. he said

  1319. he would

  1320. do.

  1321. It is

  1322. that in

  1323. doing it

  1324. God will

  1325. finish what

  1326. he started.

  1327. He will

  1328. finish it

  1329. for you.

  1330. He will

  1331. finish it

  1332. in his

  1333. church.

  1334. It's what

  1335. we sang

  1336. earlier this

  1337. morning.

  1338. We will

  1339. stand as

  1340. children of

  1341. the what?

  1342. the promise.

  1343. We will

  1344. fix our

  1345. eyes on

  1346. him,

  1347. our soul's

  1348. reward.

  1349. Till the

  1350. race is

  1351. finished and

  1352. the work

  1353. is done,

  1354. we'll walk

  1355. by faith

  1356. and not

  1357. by sight.

  1358. And by the

  1359. way,

  1360. unless you're

  1361. dead,

  1362. the work

  1363. is not

  1364. done.

  1365. some of

  1366. you all

  1367. remember,

  1368. we had

  1369. congregants

  1370. before who

  1371. have been

  1372. in their

  1373. 90s and

  1374. I tell

  1375. people,

  1376. you know

  1377. they're

  1378. serving the

  1379. church and

  1380. the way

  1381. that they

  1382. serve the

  1383. church when

  1384. they're in

  1385. their 90s

  1386. or even

  1387. in the

  1388. triple

  1389. digits is

  1390. they pray

  1391. faithfully

  1392. to God.

  1393. There is

  1394. always a

  1395. task before

  1396. us when

  1397. we're on

  1398. this earth.

  1399. It's not

  1400. just that God

  1401. is faithful

  1402. though,

  1403. generation to

  1404. generation,

  1405. we also

  1406. see his

  1407. faithfulness

  1408. in growing

  1409. and refining

  1410. Abraham.

  1411. I mentioned

  1412. this before

  1413. in our

  1414. confession of

  1415. faith,

  1416. Andy said

  1417. last week,

  1418. you know,

  1419. Abraham is

  1420. kind of a

  1421. dummy.

  1422. Abraham is

  1423. kind of a

  1424. dummy.

  1425. Abraham has

  1426. many failures.

  1427. Genesis

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  1428. chapter 12,

  1429. right after God

  1430. made this

  1431. promise to

  1432. him,

  1433. he lies to

  1434. Pharaoh about

  1435. Sarai,

  1436. right?

  1437. And then God

  1438. has to come

  1439. rescue them.

  1440. Genesis

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  1441. chapter 16,

  1442. Abraham and

  1443. Sarah don't

  1444. trust God's

  1445. promise and

  1446. so they have

  1447. to create

  1448. their own

  1449. alternative by

  1450. having a

  1451. child through

  1452. Hagar.

  1453. Genesis

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  1454. chapter 20,

  1455. Abraham lies

  1456. again,

  1457. this time to

  1458. Abimelech.

  1459. God rescues

  1460. him again.

  1461. But,

  1462. at the

  1463. very end,

  1464. Abraham is

  1465. not a

  1466. dummy

  1467. anymore.

  1468. When he

  1469. is almost

  1470. finished,

  1471. Abraham

  1472. has this

  1473. unshakable

  1474. faith.

  1475. Here he is

  1476. only trusting

  1477. and obedient.

  1478. There are

  1479. two different

  1480. mistakes Abraham

  1481. could make in

  1482. this situation,

  1483. right?

  1484. He knows

  1485. his son

  1486. needs a

  1487. wife,

  1488. right?

  1489. So we see

  1490. this at the

  1491. very beginning.

  1492. The first

  1493. mistake would

  1494. be for his

  1495. son to

  1496. marry a

  1497. Canaanite.

  1498. Look with

  1499. me at

  1500. verses 3

  1501. and 4.

  1502. He makes

  1503. him swear

  1504. with his

  1505. hand under

  1506. his thigh.

  1507. Don't ask

  1508. about that.

  1509. you will

  1510. not take

  1511. a wife

  1512. or my

  1513. son from

  1514. the

  1515. daughters

  1516. of the

  1517. Canaanites

  1518. among whom

  1519. I dwell.

  1520. No matter

  1521. what happens,

  1522. we will

  1523. not compromise.

  1524. And who's

  1525. saying this?

  1526. It's Abraham

  1527. who we've

  1528. seen time

  1529. and time

  1530. again

  1531. compromise.

  1532. But now

  1533. that is not

  1534. an option.

  1535. So that's

  1536. mistake one.

  1537. You could

  1538. marry a

  1539. Canaanite.

  1540. Abraham

  1541. has no

  1542. time for

  1543. that.

  1544. Mistake

  1545. number two,

  1546. you could

  1547. leave the

  1548. promised land.

  1549. That's

  1550. verses 5

  1551. and 6.

  1552. The servant

  1553. said to him,

  1554. perhaps the

  1555. woman may

  1556. not be

  1557. willing to

  1558. follow me

  1559. to this

  1560. land.

  1561. Must I

  1562. then take

  1563. your son

  1564. back to

  1565. the land

  1566. from which

  1567. you came?

  1568. And Abraham

  1569. is crystal

  1570. clear.

  1571. Verse 6,

  1572. see to it

  1573. that you

  1574. do not

  1575. take my

  1576. son

  1577. back

  1578. there.

  1579. Abraham

  1580. refuses

  1581. the

  1582. compromise

  1583. that he

  1584. has found

  1585. so

  1586. tempting

  1587. before.

  1588. In

  1589. verse 7

  1590. we find

  1591. out why.

  1592. Because

  1593. Abraham

  1594. has what

  1595. I've

  1596. called

  1597. this

  1598. unshakable

  1599. faith.

  1600. Look

  1601. with me

  1602. at verse

  1603. 7.

  1604. The

  1605. Lord,

  1606. the

  1607. God

  1608. of

  1609. heaven

  1610. who

  1611. took

  1612. me

  1613. from

  1614. my

  1615. father's

  1616. house

  1617. and

  1618. from

  1619. the

  1620. land

  1621. of

  1622. my

  1623. kindred

  1624. and

  1625. who

  1626. spoke

  1627. to

  1628. me

  1629. and

  1630. swore

  1631. to

  1632. me

  1633. to

  1634. your

  1635. offspring

  1636. I

  1637. will

  1638. give

  1639. this

  1640. land.

  1641. Abraham

  1642. believes

  1643. what he

  1644. doubted

  1645. before.

  1646. Abraham

  1647. finally

  1648. believes

  1649. that God

  1650. really

  1651. will

  1652. keep

  1653. his

  1654. promise.

  1655. What's

  1656. changed him?

  1657. Remember

  1658. Abraham's

  1659. failures

  1660. before

  1661. were driven

  1662. by fear.

  1663. Driven

  1664. by fear

  1665. that God

  1666. wouldn't

  1667. provide,

  1668. that he

  1669. wouldn't

  1670. protect

  1671. him

  1672. and

  1673. Sarah.

  1674. Fear

  1675. that God

  1676. needed

  1677. their

  1678. help

  1679. to

  1680. provide

  1681. a

  1682. child

  1683. through

  1684. Hagar.

  1685. Now

  1686. finally,

  1687. as he's

  1688. at the

  1689. end of

  1690. his

  1691. life,

  1692. Abraham

  1693. has

  1694. seen

  1695. God's

  1696. faithfulness

  1697. again

  1698. and

  1699. again.

  1700. He's

  1701. seen

  1702. God's

  1703. faithfulness

  1704. that Sarah

  1705. gave

  1706. birth

  1707. in her

  1708. old

  1709. age.

  1710. He's

  1711. seen

  1712. God's

  1713. faithfulness

  1714. chapter

  1715. 22.

  1716. Remember,

  1717. the

  1718. ram was

  1719. provided

  1720. instead

  1721. of

  1722. Isaac

  1723. and

  1724. what

  1725. does

  1726. Abraham

  1727. say

  1728. at this

  1729. point?

  1730. On the

  1731. mountain

  1732. of the

  1733. Lord,

  1734. he

  1735. will

  1736. provide.

  1737. Abraham

  1738. has

  1739. seen

  1740. God

  1741. provide

  1742. over

  1743. and

  1744. over.

  1745. Abraham

  1746. has

  1747. struggled

  1748. and

  1749. stumbled

  1750. for many

  1751. years.

  1752. And

  1753. at the

  1754. end,

  1755. God

  1756. has

  1757. used

  1758. all of

  1759. those

  1760. things

  1761. to

  1762. produce

  1763. a

  1764. sweet

  1765. fruit.

  1766. At

  1767. the

  1768. end,

  1769. God

  1770. has

  1771. shown

  1772. Abraham

  1773. his

  1774. faithfulness

  1775. in the

  1776. midst of

  1777. Abraham's

  1778. failure

  1779. and that

  1780. has

  1781. grown a

  1782. man

  1783. who

  1784. trusts

  1785. God

  1786. more

  1787. than

  1788. anything

  1789. else.

  1790. Christian,

  1791. your

  1792. life

  1793. is

  1794. filled

  1795. with

  1796. stumblings

  1797. and

  1798. failures.

  1799. God's

  1800. faithfulness

  1801. still

  1802. shines

  1803. through.

  1804. Your

  1805. life

  1806. is

  1807. full

  1808. of

  1809. mistakes

  1810. and

  1811. compromise.

  1812. God

  1813. is still

  1814. at work.

  1815. God

  1816. is

  1817. growing

  1818. you

  1819. year

  1820. after

  1821. year

  1822. after

  1823. year.

  1824. God

  1825. is

  1826. making

  1827. you

  1828. more

  1829. like

  1830. Jesus.

  1831. You can

  1832. look with

  1833. me on

  1834. page

  1835. nine of

  1836. your

  1837. worship

  1838. guide.

  1839. You'll

  1840. find this

  1841. quote.

  1842. God

  1843. is

  1844. working

  1845. throughout

  1846. your

  1847. life

  1848. on a

  1849. scale

  1850. of

  1851. days,

  1852. years,

  1853. and

  1854. decades

  1855. to

  1856. remake

  1857. you

  1858. into

  1859. the

  1860. likeness

  1861. of

  1862. Jesus.

  1863. You

  1864. are

  1865. being

  1866. progressively

  1867. sanctified.

  1868. You

  1869. are

  1870. being

  1871. saved.

  1872. Christian,

  1873. God

  1874. is doing

  1875. a

  1876. beautiful

  1877. work

  1878. in

  1879. your

  1880. life.

  1881. In

  1882. the midst

  1883. of your

  1884. failure and

  1885. compromise

  1886. sin.

  1887. He is

  1888. shaping

  1889. and

  1890. forming

  1891. you

  1892. to look

  1893. more

  1894. like

  1895. Jesus

  1896. Christ

  1897. at the

  1898. end of

  1899. your

  1900. life

  1901. than you

  1902. did at

  1903. the

  1904. beginning.

  1905. He is

  1906. doing that

  1907. through the

  1908. sufferings that

  1909. you encounter

  1910. as he grows

  1911. your faithfulness

  1912. in him

  1913. because he

  1914. shows up

  1915. over and

  1916. over

  1917. again.

  1918. And I

  1919. tell you

  1920. that not

  1921. because it's a

  1922. happy sentimental

  1923. thought but

  1924. because God

  1925. has made a

  1926. promise to

  1927. you.

  1928. Philippians

    Philippians 1:6

  1929. chapter 1

  1930. verse 6,

  1931. he who

  1932. began a

  1933. good work

  1934. in you

  1935. will bring

  1936. it to

  1937. completion

  1938. at the

  1939. day of

  1940. Jesus

  1941. Christ.

  1942. where is

  1943. God

  1944. growing

  1945. your

  1946. confidence

  1947. in

  1948. him?

  1949. What does

  1950. it look

  1951. like to

  1952. follow

  1953. God

  1954. in

  1955. faith?

  1956. It means

  1957. trusting

  1958. that little

  1959. by little

  1960. day by

  1961. day.

  1962. He is

  1963. making you

  1964. more like

  1965. Jesus

  1966. Christ.

  1967. At the

  1968. end,

  1969. the very

  1970. last

  1971. verse of

  1972. this

  1973. chapter,

  1974. then Isaac

  1975. brought her

  1976. into the

  1977. tent of

  1978. Sarah,

  1979. his mother.

  1980. The

  1981. baton

  1982. has been

  1983. passed.

  1984. One

  1985. generation

  1986. has handed

  1987. off to

  1988. the

  1989. next.

  1990. God

  1991. is

  1992. faithful

  1993. generation

  1994. to

  1995. generation.

  1996. God

  1997. is

  1998. faithful

  1999. to you,

  2000. growing

  2001. your

  2002. confidence

  2003. in

  2004. him.

  2005. So that's

  2006. why we're

  2007. able to

  2008. sing,

  2009. take my

  2010. life and

  2011. let it

  2012. be,

  2013. consecrated

  2014. Lord to

  2015. thee.

  2016. God

  2017. to

  2018. God

  2019. you.

  2020. Let's pray.

  2021. Our

  2022. Father in

  2023. heaven,

  2024. we do

  2025. praise you

  2026. and thank you

  2027. that your

  2028. mercy and

  2029. your grace

  2030. mean that you

  2031. don't leave us

  2032. or abandon us

  2033. in the midst of

  2034. our sin and

  2035. stupidity and

  2036. foolishness,

  2037. but instead you

  2038. work through

  2039. them to grow

  2040. us and to

  2041. change us.

  2042. That's our

  2043. hope and our

  2044. only hope,

  2045. that we belong

  2046. to you.

  2047. We ask that

  2048. you would

  2049. remind us of

  2050. that this

  2051. morning,

  2052. that you

  2053. would grow

  2054. and create

  2055. in us an

  2056. unshakable

  2057. confidence and

  2058. trust in you

  2059. that gives us

  2060. peace and

  2061. joy and

  2062. boldness and

  2063. courage and

  2064. confidence and

  2065. humility.

  2066. We ask these

  2067. things in the

  2068. mighty name of

  2069. Jesus Christ.

  2070. Amen.
