  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here. It's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. We are continuing this morning, really not just continuing, actually we're ending this morning, our series in the book of Genesis.

  3. Remember the book of Genesis tells the origin story of God's people beginning with Abraham.

  4. That's been our focus over the last four or five months to prepare us to do what we're going to do next week, which is to return to our series in Romans.

  5. We're going to be in Romans chapter 4 where Paul uses Abraham as this example that God's grace is by faith alone.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  6. Of course, we've also been asking this question as we go throughout Genesis of what does it look like to follow God in faith.

  7. Last week we looked at Genesis chapter 24 with Isaac and Rebecca and we saw that God was faithful through generations.

    Genesis 24 chapter mention

  8. That even as Abraham and Sarah exit stage left, God's promises continue.

  9. We also saw that God was faithful to Abraham, faithful to refine and grow him.

  10. That Abraham was more and more obedient as his life went on.

  11. Here we're in chapter 25, the death of Abraham.

  12. We're at the end of the road, so to speak.

  13. We're going to focus on two things.

  14. First and mostly one final look at God's faithfulness to his promises.

  15. And also a reminder, as death often reminds us, of a life well lived.

  16. So with that, I invite you to turn with me to Genesis chapter 25.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  17. If you're new to the Bible, Genesis is going to be very easy for you to find since it happens to be the very first book.

  18. And so you just have to open up to the very beginning.

  19. You can also turn where it's printed in your worship guide.

  20. As we come to it, remember that this is God's word.

  21. Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is a hammer that breaks a rock into pieces.

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  22. It's a way of saying that there is nothing so powerful that it can stand against God's word.

  23. So that's why we read now Genesis chapter 25, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  24. Abraham gave all he had to Isaac.

  25. But to the sons of his concubines, Abraham gave gifts.

  26. And while he was still living, he sent them away from his son Isaac eastward to the east country.

  27. Verse 7.

  28. These are the days of the years of Abraham's life, 175 years.

  29. Abraham breathed his last and died in a good old age,

  30. an old man and fool of years, and was gathered to his people.

  31. Isaac and Ishmael, his sons, buried him in the cave of Machpelah in the field of Ephron, the son of Zohar, the Hittite,

  32. east of Mamre, the field that Abraham had purchased from the Hittites.

  33. There Abraham was buried with Sarah, his wife.

  34. After the death of Abraham, God blessed Isaac, his son.

  35. And Isaac settled at Bir Lahai Roy.

  36. Verse 12.

  37. These are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar, the Egyptian, Sarah's servant, bore to Abraham.

  38. These are the names of the sons of Ishmael, named in the order of their birth.

  39. Nebaioth, the firstborn of Ishmael, and Kedar, Abdel, Mibsam, Mishma, Duma, Massa, Hadid, Tema, Jeter, Naphish, and Kedema.

  40. These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names by their villages and by their encampments.

  41. Twelve princes according to their tribes.

  42. These are the years of the life of Ishmael, 137 years.

  43. He breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people.

  44. They settled from Havilah to Shur, which is opposite Egypt, in the direction of Assyria.

  45. He settled over against all his kinsmen.

  46. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  47. Our Father in Heaven, you have promised us in Isaiah chapter 55 that your word does not return to you void, but it accomplishes your purposes.

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  48. So we ask this morning that you would honor that promise here and now,

  49. that you would use this passage to accomplish great things in our lives.

  50. You would remind us once again of your character, your steadfastness, your love,

  51. that you would use it to shape us and form us,

  52. that we would grow not merely in knowledge, but we would grow in love.

  53. We'd grow in our love and affection for Jesus Christ.

  54. We'd grow in our reverence and our awe for him.

  55. We'd grow in our obedience to him.

  56. That you would remind us of what matters.

  57. You'd help us to see clearly.

  58. Father, that we would worship you more and more.

  59. We ask all of these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  60. Amen.

  61. December of 1988 was the next to last month of the eight years of the Reagan administration.

  62. And so as they prepared for the handover in January of 1989,

  63. when President George H.W. Bush would take the oath of office,

  64. the administration published a 60-page book with four categories and 48 specific areas

  65. where Ronald Reagan believed he'd accomplished great things for the American people.

  66. And the title of that publication was this.

  67. Promises made, promises kept.

  68. And the point, of course, is to show, at least Ronald Reagan was trying to show,

  69. hey, I honored my word.

  70. And that matters because as a voter, you know we are cynical when it comes to politicians.

  71. Right?

  72. And we're cynical because we've had experience with them.

  73. Right?

  74. We know politicians often will say anything to get elected.

  75. And then magically, those things don't happen.

  76. Right?

  77. And so the perception is that politicians are lying.

  78. Reagan, on his way out, wanted to say,

  79. look, everything I said, I did.

  80. I honored my word.

  81. Now, whether he did or not, we'll leave to the historians.

  82. The point is not whether you loved or hated Ronald Reagan.

  83. The point is this.

  84. As we come to this passage, Genesis chapter 25,

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  85. the Abraham administration is coming to an end.

  86. It's coming to a close.

  87. But the point is not about Abraham.

  88. The point is about God.

  89. The final word of Abraham's life,

  90. final word of this story,

  91. is that God has honored his word.

  92. Promises he's made are promises he's kept.

  93. If you've been with us throughout this series for the last several months,

  94. you know God's promises are one of the major themes

  95. that we've turned to over and over again.

  96. And as we come to this passage,

  97. the very structure of the passage points us in that direction one final time.

  98. I've told you guys before that I don't want you to just learn things

  99. that are in the Bible or about the Bible.

  100. I actually want you to learn how to read the Bible.

  101. And so whenever we come across a bookend,

  102. I make a big deal about it.

  103. And we are coming once again to a bookend.

  104. Abraham's death is in verses 7 through 11.

  105. It is enclosed on both sides by genealogy.

  106. So it's bookended.

  107. It's trapped there,

  108. which tells us what the point is meant to be.

  109. It's pointing us towards the emphasis of this passage.

  110. It's telling us,

  111. focus on this as you think about Abraham's death.

  112. Focus on the genealogies.

  113. Focus on his descendants as his life comes to an end.

  114. There's another bookend that's happening,

  115. not just in this story, but the entire story.

  116. So this is the end of the Abraham story.

  117. Go back with me to the beginning of the Abraham story.

  118. Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  119. What do you need to become a great nation?

  120. You need people.

  121. And how do you get people?

  122. You have sons and daughters.

  123. Throughout the story,

  124. this promise has intensified

  125. as three different images were used

  126. to represent how many children Abraham would have.

  127. Genesis chapter 13.

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  128. God says,

  129. If you can count the dust of the earth,

  130. that's how many kids you will have.

  131. Genesis chapter 15.

    Genesis 15 chapter mention

  132. He comes to him and says,

  133. Look at the sky.

  134. Can you number the stars?

  135. If you can number the stars,

  136. that's how many children you will have.

  137. Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  138. He comes back again,

  139. repeats the stars,

  140. and adds another image.

  141. Can you count the sand on the seashore?

  142. If you can,

  143. that's how many descendants you're going to have.

  144. Dust, sand, stars.

  145. As Abraham dies,

  146. it is already happening.

  147. He's already multiplying generation by generation.

  148. So the point is this.

  149. We are given genealogies

  150. before Abraham's death

  151. and after Abraham's death

  152. to remind us

  153. God is keeping his promise.

  154. One last time,

  155. what we've been told over and over again,

  156. we're reminded of once more.

  157. Isaac will be the father of many nations.

  158. Not just the father of Isaac,

  159. as many children as the dust,

  160. as the stars,

  161. as the sand.

  162. You might wonder,

  163. that's great.

  164. I'm glad that Abraham had lots of kids.

  165. What in the world

  166. does that have to do with me

  167. in Colorado Springs

  168. in September of 2025?

  169. And it has many things to do with you.

  170. The most important of which is this.

  171. It is this promise of many descendants

  172. from Abraham

  173. that gets us fully and finally

  174. to Jesus Christ.

  175. It is because God honors his promise here

  176. that he fulfills his promise there.

  177. And it's related to another promise,

  178. also Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  179. It wasn't just that God

  180. was going to make Abraham

  181. the father of many nations.

  182. No.

  183. In you,

  184. all the families of the earth

  185. shall be blessed.

  186. How are all the families of the earth

  187. supposed to be blessed?

  188. It is not simply

  189. by Abraham having lots of kids.

  190. No.

  191. The families of the earth

  192. are going to be blessed

  193. by fulfilling

  194. an even earlier promise

  195. from Genesis chapter 3

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  196. that the seed of the woman

  197. will crush the head of the serpent.

  198. In other words,

  199. all the families of the earth

  200. are going to be blessed

  201. because one day

  202. a descendant of Abraham,

  203. that is Jesus Christ,

  204. will come.

  205. He will live the perfect life

  206. that we should have lived.

  207. He will die the death.

  208. We deserve to die.

  209. He will save his people

  210. from their sins.

  211. All families of the earth

  212. blessed in Christ.

  213. Not merely the Jews.

  214. you as well.

  215. I've been telling you

  216. for weeks now,

  217. one of our major questions

  218. of Genesis is

  219. what does it look like

  220. to follow God in faith?

  221. Following God in faith

  222. looks like

  223. constantly

  224. reminding ourselves

  225. of the promise

  226. that he has kept

  227. in Jesus Christ.

  228. I've said that before

  229. over the last number of months.

  230. That is the keystone

  231. to every other promise.

  232. It is the guarantee

  233. of every other prophecy.

  234. Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  235. he who did not spare

  236. his own son

  237. but gave him up

  238. for us all,

  239. how will he not

  240. also with him

  241. graciously

  242. give us

  243. all things?

  244. Which is a way

  245. of saying

  246. if God kept

  247. his promise

  248. about Jesus

  249. which he did,

  250. of course

  251. he will keep

  252. every other one.

  253. If he kept

  254. the hardest promise,

  255. of course

  256. he'll keep

  257. the easy ones.

  258. promise

  259. that God

  260. kept

  261. to Abraham

  262. is a promise

  263. he has

  264. kept

  265. to us.

  266. It's a promise

  267. he's kept

  268. to you.

  269. That is a

  270. north star

  271. of the Christian life.

  272. That's our

  273. horizon line

  274. as we try to

  275. keep big things

  276. big and small

  277. things small.

  278. I have a friend

  279. who I've known

  280. for many years

  281. who has struggled

  282. with a variety

  283. of things

  284. including his

  285. own challenges

  286. with depression

  287. and at one

  288. point he told

  289. me

  290. basically what

  291. it comes down

  292. to is this.

  293. When I get

  294. up out of bed

  295. every morning

  296. I answer

  297. this question.

  298. Did Jesus

  299. rise from

  300. the dead

  301. or did he

  302. not?

  303. And if he

  304. did,

  305. everything else

  306. flows from that.

  307. Jesus rose

  308. from the dead

  309. everything else

  310. will be

  311. okay.

  312. Whenever we're

  313. tempted

  314. to doubt

  315. God's word

  316. or to doubt

  317. God's

  318. goodness

  319. we can do

  320. one

  321. very simple

  322. thing.

  323. We look

  324. to God

  325. fulfilling

  326. his promise

  327. in his

  328. son

  329. and our

  330. savior

  331. Jesus Christ.

  332. that's what

  333. it looks like

  334. to follow

  335. God

  336. in faith.

  337. Remember

  338. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  339. chapter 1

  340. tells us

  341. all the

  342. promises

  343. of God

  344. are yes

  345. and amen

  346. in Christ.

  347. Promises

  348. made

  349. promises

  350. kept.

  351. There's a

  352. focus here

  353. not just

  354. on children

  355. in general

  356. although that

  357. is why we

  358. have these

  359. bookended

  360. genealogies

  361. but there's

  362. also this

  363. special focus

  364. on Ishmael

  365. in verses

  366. 12-18.

  367. It's

  368. first

  369. the first

  370. set we

  371. get

  372. verses 1-4

  373. is Keturah's

  374. children.

  375. So apparently

  376. Abraham had

  377. another wife

  378. we find out

  379. later in the

  380. passage she

  381. was a

  382. concubine

  383. but we

  384. end here

  385. with this

  386. word about

  387. Ishmael

  388. the special

  389. focus

  390. which raises

  391. the question

  392. why is

  393. this important

  394. as we think

  395. about the

  396. end of

  397. Abraham's

  398. life?

  399. Ishmael is

  400. important for

  401. a couple

  402. reasons.

  403. One reason

  404. is that

  405. Ishmael

  406. becomes one

  407. of the

  408. nations.

  409. Remember

  410. the promise

  411. at the

  412. beginning

  413. in chapter

  414. 12 was

  415. that Abraham

  416. would become

  417. a great

  418. nation.

  419. Later

  420. God

  421. adds to

  422. that.

  423. He says

  424. actually

  425. you become

  426. many

  427. nations.

  428. Ishmael

  429. is one

  430. of that.

  431. one of

  432. those.

  433. Another

  434. reason

  435. that we've

  436. kind of

  437. skipped over

  438. a little

  439. bit because

  440. we were

  441. focusing on

  442. other things

  443. is this.

  444. Abraham

  445. loves

  446. Ishmael.

  447. Remember

  448. in chapter

  449. 21

  450. Isaac is

  451. born and

  452. there's this

  453. rivalry that

  454. develops between

  455. Isaac and

  456. Ishmael.

  457. So Sarah

  458. comes to

  459. Abraham and

  460. she says

  461. you have to

  462. deal with

  463. this Abraham.

  464. Abraham.

  465. We didn't

  466. talk about

  467. it at the

  468. time because

  469. we were

  470. focused on

  471. God's

  472. fulfillment of

  473. the promise

  474. but in

  475. the Hebrew

  476. there even

  477. more than

  478. in the

  479. English you

  480. can see

  481. Abraham is

  482. livid.

  483. He's

  484. livid at

  485. the suggestion

  486. that Ishmael

  487. would be sent

  488. away because

  489. he loves

  490. him.

  491. That's why

  492. in that same

  493. chapter God

  494. has to come

  495. to Abraham

  496. and say

  497. do what

  498. your wife

  499. has told

  500. you to

  501. do.

  502. We saw

  503. the same

  504. thing back

  505. in Genesis

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  506. chapter 17

  507. God comes

  508. to Abraham

  509. and says

  510. look it's

  511. Sarah who's

  512. going to

  513. have a

  514. child.

  515. And Abraham

  516. says yeah

  517. but what

  518. about Ishmael?

  519. Sarah's in

  520. her 90s.

  521. Can't Ishmael

  522. be good

  523. enough?

  524. There's a

  525. promise that's

  526. repeated multiple

  527. times both to

  528. Abraham and to

  529. Hagar that

  530. Ishmael is

  531. going to be

  532. also the

  533. father of a

  534. nation.

  535. In fact God

  536. tells Hagar

  537. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  538. 16 he will

  539. have so many

  540. children they

  541. can't be

  542. numbered.

  543. So the

  544. promise is

  545. kept about

  546. offspring yes

  547. promise also

  548. kept about

  549. Ishmael.

  550. So we're just

  551. going through the

  552. list.

  553. Every promise

  554. God makes

  555. he keeps.

  556. All the

  557. loose ends

  558. are being

  559. tied up.

  560. Promise

  561. about the

  562. children kept

  563. promise about

  564. Ishmael

  565. kept promise

  566. not just about

  567. Ishmael but

  568. now turn for

  569. me for a

  570. second promise

  571. about the

  572. land.

  573. We saw a

  574. hint of

  575. this chapter

  576. 23 with

  577. Sarah's

  578. death now

  579. it comes

  580. again here

  581. verses 9

  582. and 10.

  583. We get to

  584. the burial

  585. of Abraham

  586. where is he

  587. buried?

  588. With Sarah

  589. in the cave

  590. he purchased

  591. in the land

  592. God had

  593. promised.

  594. Once again

  595. we end

  596. where we

  597. started.

  598. Remember

  599. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  600. 12 we had

  601. the promise

  602. great nation

  603. we had the

  604. promise of

  605. great blessing

  606. we also had

  607. the promise

  608. of land.

  609. In fact that

  610. came first.

  611. Go from

  612. your country

  613. and your

  614. kindred

  615. and your

  616. father's

  617. house

  618. to the

  619. land

  620. that I

  621. will show

  622. you.

  623. And then the

  624. land promise

  625. just like all

  626. the other

  627. promises is

  628. repeated over

  629. and over

  630. again in

  631. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 13 chapter mention

  632. 13 and 15

  633. and 17.

  634. and here

  635. at the

  636. end

  637. Abraham

  638. is buried

  639. in the

  640. land God

  641. promised

  642. to give

  643. him.

  644. Promises

  645. made

  646. promises

  647. kept.

  648. God has

  649. kept his

  650. promise

  651. about children

  652. that they

  653. would be

  654. as many

  655. as the

  656. dust

  657. and the

  658. stars

  659. and the

  660. sand.

  661. God has

  662. kept his

  663. promises

  664. about

  665. Ishmael

  666. whom

  667. Abraham

  668. deeply

  669. loved.

  670. God has

  671. kept his

  672. promise

  673. about the

  674. land.

  675. Everything

  676. God

  677. said

  678. he's done.

  679. Every

  680. promise

  681. fulfilled.

  682. We've

  683. talked about

  684. the promise

  685. of the

  686. blessing

  687. to all

  688. the nations

  689. how that

  690. overflows

  691. to you

  692. in Jesus

  693. Christ.

  694. The promise

  695. of the

  696. land

  697. also

  698. comes

  699. to you

  700. Christian.

  701. Jesus

  702. in the

  703. New Testament

  704. expands

  705. the promise

  706. of the

  707. land

  708. from this

  709. one

  710. specific

  711. plot

  712. to the

  713. entire

  714. earth.

  715. That's

  716. what he

  717. teaches

  718. in the

  719. Sermon

  720. on the

  721. Mount

  722. in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  723. chapter 5

  724. Jesus

  725. says this

  726. blessed

  727. are the

  728. meek

  729. for they

  730. shall

  731. inherit

  732. the

  733. earth.

  734. That's

  735. the

  736. Christian

  737. promise

  738. the

  739. Christian

  740. hope

  741. that

  742. heaven

  743. is

  744. when

  745. God's

  746. presence

  747. fills

  748. not just

  749. the

  750. promised

  751. land

  752. not just

  753. Jerusalem

  754. no the

  755. entire

  756. world.

  757. Promise

  758. of land

  759. to Abraham

  760. is just

  761. the beginning

  762. and Abraham

  763. himself

  764. knew that.

  765. Even

  766. Abraham

  767. was looking

  768. beyond

  769. this

  770. one

  771. plot

  772. of

  773. land

  774. to

  775. something

  776. larger

  777. and

  778. greater.

  779. Brit

  780. read it

  781. for us

  782. this

  783. morning.

  784. We

  785. talked

  786. about

  787. it

  788. before

  789. in

  790. our

  791. series

  792. on

  793. Abraham.

  794. Hebrews

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  795. chapter

  796. 11.

  797. This

  798. is on

  799. verse 2

  800. of your

  801. worship

  802. guide.

  803. Speaking

  804. about

  805. Abraham

  806. verse

  807. 10.

  808. For

  809. he

  810. was

  811. looking

  812. forward

  813. to

  814. the

  815. city

  816. that

  817. has

  818. foundations

  819. whose

  820. designer

  821. and

  822. builder

  823. is

  824. God.

  825. mentioned

  826. to you

  827. just a

  828. few

  829. minutes

  830. ago

  831. the

  832. north

  833. stars

  834. of the

  835. Christian

  836. the

  837. things

  838. that

  839. we

  840. fix

  841. our

  842. eyes

  843. on.

  844. One

  845. of

  846. them

  847. is

  848. Jesus'

  849. death

  850. and

  851. resurrection.

  852. That's

  853. a main

  854. thing.

  855. I wake

  856. up every

  857. morning.

  858. Has

  859. Jesus

  860. or has

  861. he not

  862. risen

  863. from

  864. the

  865. dead?

  866. If

  867. he

  868. has

  869. everything

  870. else

  871. flows

  872. from

  873. that.

  874. But

  875. here's

  876. another

  877. north

  878. star

  879. we

  880. look

  881. to

  882. the

  883. heavenly

  884. city

  885. to

  886. come.

  887. We

  888. look

  889. to

  890. the

  891. future

  892. that

  893. God

  894. is

  895. preparing

  896. for

  897. his

  898. people.

  899. The

  900. same

  901. place

  902. Abraham

  903. looked.

  904. Abraham's

  905. hope

  906. was more

  907. and

  908. greater

  909. than

  910. one

  911. plot

  912. of

  913. land.

  914. And

  915. so

  916. for us

  917. we

  918. look

  919. beyond

  920. this

  921. one

  922. story

  923. and

  924. this

  925. one

  926. man

  927. we

  928. look

  929. to

  930. the

  931. same

  932. city

  933. he

  934. longed

  935. for.

  936. Thankfully

  937. we

  938. don't

  939. have

  940. to

  941. wonder

  942. too

  943. much

  944. about

  945. it

  946. because

  947. God

  948. tells

  949. us

  950. there's

  951. another

  952. bookend.

  953. The

  954. Bible

  955. begins

  956. in

  957. Genesis

  958. in a

  959. garden.

  960. It

  961. ends

  962. in this

  963. city,

  964. the city

  965. that Abraham

  966. looked

  967. forward

  968. to.

  969. The

  970. book

  971. of

  972. Revelation

  973. tells

  974. us

  975. what

  976. this

  977. city

  978. looks

  979. like.

  980. This

  981. is

  982. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  983. chapter

  984. 21.

  985. verse 1.

  986. behold, the dwelling place of God is with men.

  987. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people,

  988. and God himself will be with them as their God.

  989. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes,

  990. and death shall be no more.

  991. Neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore,

  992. for the former things have passed away.

  993. What does it look like to follow God in faith?

  994. Christian, it looks like remembering every day two things.

  995. It looks like remembering every day that Jesus Christ did in fact die and rise again from the dead.

  996. And that because of that, he will honor every single promise.

  997. It also looks like remembering every single day exactly what your future will be.

  998. And your future will be this, that God will dwell with you,

  999. you will be his people,

1000. and God himself will be with you as your God.

1001. And your future, like Abraham's, involves God wiping away every tear from your eyes.

1002. It looks like death being no more,

1003. and it looks like no mourning, no crying, no pain,

1004. for the former things have passed away.

1005. That is what it looks like to follow God in faith.

  1006. Promises made, promises kept.

1007. If you live with those two things as the horizon line of your life,

  1008. I promise you,

1009. everything else will fall into place.

1010. Those are the north stars of the Christian.

1011. Those are how we live life in focus and on mission.

1012. It's how we keep our lives in perspective.

1013. In the midst of those, of course,

  1014. Abraham actually dies.

  1015. Verses 7 through 11.

1016. We have been with Abraham on a journey.

1017. We started with him in chapter 12.

1018. We were told he was 75 years old.

1019. In chapter 21, when Isaac is born,

  1020. we're told he's 100 years old.

  1021. And now, verse 7, he's what?

  1022. 175.

1023. Now, our focus has been really on like 40 to 50 of those years.

1024. Obviously, the story spans a full 100.

1025. Reminds us again of what I told you last week.

1026. All of us, at some point,

  1027. will exit stage left.

1028. All of us, at some point,

1029. end our walk in this world.

  1030. Following God in faith

1031. looks like living with death in mind.

1032. How do we keep our future front and center,

  1033. that new Jerusalem?

1034. Well, we have to remember

1035. that what we have here and now is temporary.

  1036. And we remember that

1037. as and when we think about the day of our death.

  1038. Christian,

1039. are you ready to die?

1040. Because, by the way, you will.

  1041. If you're not a Christian,

1042. are you ready to die?

  1043. Or are you pretending,

  1044. living as if,

1045. this life will continue forever?

1046. Will you let your death,

  1047. which will happen,

  1048. shape your life today?

1049. There's an old saying you may have heard

  1050. that goes like this,

  1051. only one life

  1052. will soon be passed.

1053. Only what's done for Christ

  1054. will last.

1055. Another person puts it this way,

1056. this is on the back of your worship guide.

1057. When life ends or is about to end,

1058. absolutely everything else comes into focus.

1059. The things that don't really matter,

1060. but which we gave so much time to,

1061. now seem so empty and pointless.

  1062. The lives we touched

1063. and the generosity we showed

1064. and the love we gave or received

1065. now mean so much more.

1066. At the end of a life of great faith,

  1067. Abraham died.

  1068. Christian, non-Christian,

  1069. you will too.

  1070. Live like it.

  1071. In his fantasy series,

  1072. The Stormlight Archive,

  1073. Brandon Sanderson introduces us

1074. to a character named Terevangian.

1075. And Terevangian is a king

1076. who has an unusual problem,

1077. which is that his days flip

  1078. between two things.

  1079. Some days,

  1080. he is extremely intelligent.

  1081. He's a genius.

1082. He's able to think at a level

1083. that the rest of us can only imagine.

  1084. On other days,

  1085. he's extremely compassionate.

  1086. He has an empathy

  1087. that we cannot imagine.

  1088. But those two things

1089. are never true on the same day.

  1090. So the compassionate days,

  1091. he's not smart.

  1092. The smart days,

  1093. not so compassionate.

1094. And so when he's very intelligent,

1095. he realizes he has to prepare himself

1096. for the days when he's not.

1097. And so on the days

  1098. when he thinks clearly,

1099. when he really sees what matters,

1100. he hurries to write down

1101. what it is he needs to remember.

  1102. He writes this book

  1103. called The Diagram,

  1104. which is his plan

  1105. to save the world.

1106. And then on the days

  1107. he can't think straight,

1108. he comes back to it.

  1109. Because it reminds him,

  1110. okay,

1111. when I was thinking clearly,

1112. this is what I knew

  1113. had to happen.

  1114. Now,

1115. if you're familiar with the series,

  1116. you know Teravangian

  1117. has some ethical problems.

  1118. The point,

  1119. though,

  1120. is this.

  1121. He thinks clearly

  1122. on some days,

  1123. his mind is muddled

  1124. on others.

1125. What does it look like

1126. to follow God in faith?

  1127. It looks like

  1128. living with focus

  1129. on what matters

  1130. more than anything else.

  1131. and on the days

1132. that we see that clearly,

  1133. we cling to it.

  1134. We write it down.

  1135. We return to it

  1136. again and again.

1137. And so that on the days

  1138. when we are filled

  1139. with doubt

  1140. and fear

  1141. and confusion,

  1142. we return

1143. back to what is true.

  1144. God has given us,

  1145. in a sense,

  1146. our own diagram,

1147. the things that we need

  1148. to cling to

  1149. more than anything else.

  1150. That as we're distracted

  1151. in this world,

  1152. pulled in so many

  1153. different directions

  1154. and loves

  1155. and affections,

  1156. we return

  1157. over and over again

  1158. to the fact

  1159. that Jesus

  1160. has died

1161. and risen from the dead.

  1162. And we return

  1163. over and over

  1164. that no matter

  1165. what happens now,

  1166. we know

  1167. what will happen

  1168. then.

  1169. That we will be

  1170. with God

  1171. forever

  1172. as our God.

  1173. all I have needed,

  1174. thy hand

  1175. have provided.

  1176. Great is thy

  1177. faithfulness,

  1178. Lord,

  1179. unto me.

  1180. Let's pray.

  1181. Our Father in heaven,

  1182. we praise you

  1183. and thank you again

  1184. that you have not

  1185. left us

  1186. as orphans

  1187. in a merciless universe,

  1188. but you have come

  1189. and spoken clearly

1190. to us in your word

  1191. that you remind us

  1192. of what matters.

1193. We ask that you would

  1194. capture our hearts,

  1195. that we would look

1196. at the right horizon line.

  1197. We would have

  1198. the correct north star,

  1199. that we would return

  1200. again and again

  1201. to Jesus

  1202. and his death

  1203. and his resurrection,

  1204. to the future

  1205. that you hold

1206. for us in this world,

1207. that it would cause us

  1208. to walk forward

  1209. in faith

  1210. and obedience

  1211. and love.

  1212. We ask these things

  1213. in the mighty name

  1214. of Jesus Christ.

  1215. Amen.
