  1. You may be seated. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. ! It's my joy to bring God's word to you today. This morning we're continuing our series in the book of Romans and you'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter.

  3. It's a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s AD and it's called Romans for a very simple reason, which is that it's written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  4. And it is about the gospel. It's about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection.

  5. Now if you've been with us for a while, you know that maybe a couple times every year I pull out the quote by Samuel Johnson,

  6. an English writer from the 18th century who said people need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.

  7. People need to be reminded more often than they need to be instructed.

  8. I looked back in my notes and the last time I said that was February 2nd, so we're doing great.

  9. I haven't run into my limit yet. And I say that because this Sunday is another reminder Sunday.

  10. We are finishing this long stretch we have had with the figure of Abraham.

  11. And we're going to see Abraham one last time. We will not see him again until Romans chapter 9.

    Romans 9 chapter mention

  12. So you'll remember back in the month of May, we started in Genesis chapter 11.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  13. We went through Genesis chapter 25. Then we started in Romans 4.

    Genesis 25 chapter mention

  14. And now Paul is going to remind us of everything we've seen.

  15. So the question is this.

  16. What is the most important lesson from Abraham?

  17. What is the most important lesson from Abraham?

  18. What is it above everything else that we are meant to learn from him?

  19. So with that question, I invite you to turn with me now to Romans chapter 4, starting at verse 16.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  20. You'll find it on page 7 of your worship guide.

  21. Remember as we turn here that this is God's word.

  22. Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is a hammer that breaks a rock into pieces,

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  23. which means there is nothing that can stand against the power of God's word.

  24. So that's why we read now Romans chapter 4, starting at verse 16.

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  25. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring.

  26. Not only to the adherent of the law, but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham,

  27. who is the father of us all.

  28. As it is written, I have made you the father of many nations.

  29. In the presence of God, in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead,

  30. and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

  31. Verse 18.

  32. In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations.

  33. As he had been told, so shall your offspring be.

  34. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was as good as dead,

  35. since he was about a hundred years old,

  36. or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb.

  37. No unbelief made him waver concerning the promise of God.

  38. But he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God,

  39. fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised.

  40. That is why his faith was counted to him as righteousness.

  41. But the words it was counted to him were not written for his sake alone,

  42. but for ours also.

  43. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead,

  44. Jesus our Lord,

  45. who was delivered up for our trespasses,

  46. and raised for our justification.

  47. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  48. Our Father in heaven, we do praise you and thank you again for drawing us together as your people.

  49. We thank you again for coming and speaking to us in your word.

  50. We ask that you would do that again this morning.

  51. That you'd honor your promise in Isaiah chapter 55,

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  52. that your word does not return to you empty,

  53. but accomplishes all your purposes for it.

  54. And so we ask that that would be true this morning,

  55. that you would use your word to accomplish great things

  56. in our hearts and our minds and our lives.

  57. Most importantly, we ask that you would show us Jesus,

  58. that we would see him,

  59. that he would be more beautiful

  60. than we've realized ever before.

  61. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  62. Amen.

  63. Do you guys need me to do something different before I...

  64. No? Okay.

  65. Let's keep rolling.

  66. One of the most boring events in politics every four years

  67. is the vice presidential debates,

  68. and they are boring primarily because vice presidents do not matter.

  69. But the 1988 vice presidential debate made history

  70. for a grand total of four sentences

  71. that became famous sentences that are still remembered today.

  72. Senator Dan Quayle, who was the Republican,

  73. was coming up against Senator Lloyd Benson, the Democrat.

  74. And Dan Quayle, Bush 1's running mate,

  75. had come under a lot of criticism.

  76. He was widely viewed as insufficient and unqualified.

  77. So the press had a heyday going after him.

  78. And so Quayle's strategy was to compare himself

  79. to John F. Kennedy, the 35th president,

  80. because there's the logic.

  81. JFK did not have much experience.

  82. He was still a great president.

  83. I don't have much experience.

  84. I will be a great vice president.

  85. And so he would repeat this on the campaign trail.

  86. His opponent, Senator Lloyd Benson,

  87. then began to practice in his debate prep

  88. a destructive killer line.

  89. He was waiting for Dan Quayle to bring this up

  90. in the vice presidential debates.

  91. Dan Quayle did not disappoint.

  92. And so when, once again, he compared himself to JFK,

  93. Lloyd Benson said this,

  94. Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy.

  95. I knew Jack Kennedy.

  96. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine.

  97. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy.

  98. And the point was this.

  99. Do not compare yourself to the greats.

  100. Yeah, that's fine that Jack Kennedy

  101. didn't have a little bit of experience,

  102. but he was a great man, right?

  103. He's the exception that proves the rule.

  104. You, Dan Quayle, are in fact not.

  105. And still today, this phrase is used.

  106. If you want to cut someone down to size,

  107. all you have to say is,

  108. you, sir, are no Jack Kennedy.

  109. Paul, the entire chapter, chapter four of Romans,

  110. has been focused on Abraham

  111. because Abraham is one of the greats.

  112. Right, remember, a couple weeks ago,

  113. he pulled out Abraham as an example,

  114. and then he pulled out David to prove his point.

  115. Hey, if this is true of the greatest figures

  116. of Israel's history,

  117. it can be true of you as well.

  118. In fact, that's Paul's point here

  119. as he comes to the very end of chapter four.

  120. He's saying actually the opposite of Senator Benson.

  121. He doesn't say,

  122. Christian, you are no Abraham.

  123. No, he actually says the opposite.

  124. That's his point here.

  125. Christian, you can be like Abraham.

  126. Christian, Abraham was one of the greats.

  127. You can be too.

  128. That's why our sermon title,

  129. you'll see this on page seven,

  130. is this, Abraham's faith, our faith.

  131. You, Christian, can be like Abraham

  132. no matter how great he was.

  133. And that's where we jump into this passage.

  134. He gives us the first reason in verse 16.

  135. You can be like Abraham

  136. because Abraham was in his salvation,

  137. in his life,

  138. based on faith rather than works.

  139. That's why we see verse 16.

  140. It depends on faith

  141. in order that the promise may rest on grace

  142. and be guaranteed to all his offspring,

  143. not only to the adherent of the law,

  144. but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham.

  145. Paul here is saying,

  146. look, you can be a child of Abraham

  147. whether you're a Jew or a Gentile.

  148. If you believe in God,

  149. you are Abraham's child.

  150. That's why he says there,

  151. who is the father of us all.

  152. In other words, Paul's saying,

  153. look, because Abraham's life

  154. was resting on faith and not on works,

  155. you, if you rest on faith and not on works,

  156. are his child.

  157. In fact, that's the only way.

  158. That's the only way

  159. that the blessings of Abraham

  160. can be guaranteed to his offspring.

  161. If it were based on works,

  162. then we'd have to see every generation,

  163. will this generation be good enough

  164. will this generation measure up?

  165. Will they be able to do the great things

  166. that Abraham did?

  167. That's not the question, though.

  168. The question is not whether they can do

  169. the great things Abraham did.

  170. The question is whether we believe

  171. in the great God that Abraham believed in.

  172. And so then, after verse 16,

  173. he jumps into it.

  174. What does it look like

  175. for us to be like Abraham?

  176. What does it look like for us to have

  177. that Abraham sort of faith?

  178. Verse 17, he tells us about Abraham.

  179. Abraham was the one who believed in God.

  180. It doesn't just tell us that he believed in God,

  181. though he tells us the type of God

  182. that Abraham believed in.

  183. In the presence of the God in whom he believed,

  184. who gives life to the dead

  185. and calls into existence the things that do not exist.

  186. That's one of the great themes of Scripture, by the way,

  187. that God creates something out of nothing

  188. by the power of his word.

  189. God's word is so powerful that,

  190. as I mentioned in my prayer in Isaiah 55,

  191. he makes this promise,

  192. my word will accomplish whatever I want it to accomplish.

  193. God speaks and it is done.

  194. And so how is it that we're supposed to be like Abraham?

  195. Well, the first answer is this.

  196. We are like Abraham when we believe in Abraham's God.

  197. Believe in the God who is powerful.

  198. Being like Abraham is not like trying to be like JFK.

  199. Being like Abraham is not trying to be great.

  200. Being like Abraham is believing in the God who is great.

  201. Believing in the God gives life to the dead

  202. and calls to existence the things that do not exist.

  203. Abraham believed in the all-powerful God.

  204. Christian, you believe in the all-powerful God as well.

  205. Paul then tells us what exactly that belief looks like.

  206. Okay, we see that Abraham believed in this powerful God.

  207. What does it look like to have faith in that powerful God?

  208. He goes on from telling us about the type of God

  209. that Abraham believes in to the type of faith

  210. that Abraham had.

  211. That takes us to verse 18.

  212. Abraham believed in the impossible.

  213. That's what had hope against hope means.

  214. Now that's a confusing phrase.

  215. In English we might say this.

  216. Abraham had hope against all odds.

  217. Abraham believed God despite the evidence.

  218. And what was it that he believed God to do?

  219. Verse 18 also tells us that.

  220. Abraham believed against all odds

  221. that he would be the father of many nations.

  222. It's a simple logic here that Paul's following.

  223. So verse 18, he believes the impossible.

  224. The impossible is that he'd be the father of many nations.

  225. Verse 19 tells us why exactly that's impossible.

  226. It's impossible because Abraham is impotent

  227. and Sarah is infertile.

  228. Abraham's belief was against all odds

  229. because humanly it was impossible.

  230. So again, we're talking about the type of faith Abraham had.

  231. It takes us to verse 20 which tells us

  232. despite these things being impossible,

  233. impossible, Abraham's faith is growing in hope.

  234. And then finally, verse 21.

  235. What is it that Abraham believed?

  236. Remember I said this was a review Sunday.

  237. Abraham believed that God would do

  238. what God said he would do.

  239. The faith of Abraham is believing

  240. in the almighty and all-powerful God.

  241. The faith of Abraham is believing

  242. that that God will do exactly what he said he would do

  243. even when and especially it is impossible.

  244. Abraham's faith, our faith.

  245. And then verse 22.

  246. What happens?

  247. That faith was counted to Abraham as righteousness.

  248. Abraham was made right with God

  249. not by works but by faith.

  250. There you have it.

  251. Now if you're a cynic, you might be thinking,

  252. man, we just spent four plus months

  253. in the story of Abraham in Genesis.

  254. And now we're spending a month

  255. in Romans chapter 4

    Romans 4 chapter mention

  256. and at the very end,

  257. Paul has nothing new to say.

  258. He's telling us the same thing

  259. that we have reviewed again and again and again.

  260. He's telling us

  261. that God's a promise keeping God.

  262. He's telling us the same thing

  263. that we should believe those promises.

  264. He's telling us that justification

  265. is by grace through faith alone.

  266. And so is it not

  267. that as we end the story of Abraham,

  268. we end not with a triumph

  269. but with a whimper?

  270. Is it not that we're ending

  271. merely with a review?

  272. If you're a cynic

  273. and you think you've heard this all before,

  274. you are in one sense correct.

  275. Right?

  276. We already know this.

  277. If you've been with us,

  278. you know that God made great promises to Abraham.

  279. If you've been with us,

  280. you know that God honored

  281. and kept those promises against all odds.

  282. You know that God did what he said

  283. he would do.

  284. We have talked about this over and over.

  285. But, in another sense,

  286. you are dead wrong.

  287. Remember I asked you,

  288. I told you the question was this.

  289. What is the most important lesson from Abraham?

  290. And what's new about this passage is this.

  291. As we come to the very end,

  292. Paul tells us

  293. why it matters more than anything else.

  294. Paul tells us the main point

  295. of the Abraham story.

  296. And he does it in verses 23 and 24.

  297. Paul finally points back to us.

  298. Points the finger straight at the reader.

  299. Notice we shift here finally

  300. to the first person plural.

  301. The words it was counted to him

  302. were not written for his sake alone,

  303. but for ours also.

  304. It will be counted to us

  305. who believe in him

  306. who raised from the dead

  307. Jesus our Lord.

  308. And so the point is this.

  309. Not just Abraham.

  310. You, sir,

  311. you, ma'am,

  312. can be like Abraham.

  313. That's the point.

  314. That's what we've been driving to now

  315. for about five months.

  316. For Paul to say this.

  317. All the stories of Abraham,

  318. everything we've seen

  319. of his great trust

  320. and confidence in God,

  321. the ways that he put it all on the line,

  322. the ways he risked it,

  323. all of that's been driving

  324. to this question.

  325. What about you?

  326. Do you believe

  327. that God raised Jesus Christ

  328. from the dead?

  329. Do you?

  330. I'm so serious.

  331. Do you believe

  332. that God raised Jesus Christ

  333. from the dead?

  334. That is what the point

  335. of the story of Abraham is

  336. that we've been driving at

  337. for five months now.

  338. There are so many reasons

  339. that people come to church.

  340. People come to church

  341. because it's a great place

  342. to meet other people.

  343. People come to church

  344. because they're lifted up

  345. by the message

  346. and the music.

  347. They want principles

  348. and ways to live

  349. and they want to learn

  350. about the Christian worldview

  351. and what it is that we do

  352. as we move forward together

  353. in God's mission.

  354. But none of that matters

  355. unless we can answer

  356. that question.

  357. Did Jesus rise from the dead?

  358. Do you know why

  359. we worship on Sunday

  360. and not Monday or Tuesday?

  361. We worship on Sunday

  362. because Jesus rose from the dead

  363. on the first day of the week.

  364. And so we celebrate

  365. Jesus' resurrection

  366. every week on the first day.

  367. In other words,

  368. happy Easter.

  369. Every Sunday is Easter Sunday.

  370. Christian,

  371. if you believe

  372. that God raised Jesus Christ

  373. from the dead

  374. and you stake your life on it,

  375. you live your life

  376. as if the resurrection is true

  377. because it is.

  378. and you take all the aspects

  379. of your life

  380. and orient them around that.

  381. You stake your life,

  382. you set as your north star,

  383. whether it is in your finances,

  384. your friendship,

  385. your family,

  386. your work,

  387. your play,

  388. your vocation,

  389. that Jesus died

  390. and was risen from the dead.

  391. If you do that,

  392. then you are like Abraham.

  393. Abraham.

  394. The words it was counted to him

  395. were not written for his sake alone

  396. but for ours also.

  397. Paul is turning the mirror

  398. on the reader for the first time.

  399. Abraham had great faith.

  400. That's wonderful.

  401. What about you?

  402. Will you also believe

  403. the impossible?

  404. Will you also believe

  405. that God will do

  406. what no human can do?

  407. Do you believe God has done

  408. what no human can do?

  409. Has Jesus Christ

  410. been raised from the dead

  411. or has he not?

  412. Do you believe in verse 17?

  413. Do you believe in the God

  414. who gives life to the dead

  415. and calls into existence

  416. things that do not exist?

  417. Do you believe that?

  418. Do you believe that

  419. as you navigate

  420. the mess

  421. of family

  422. and relationships

  423. and work

  424. and community

  425. and government

  426. and nations?

  427. Do you believe that

  428. as you come up against disease?

  429. Do you believe

  430. that what you do

  431. in this life

  432. is greater than

  433. the sum of its parts

  434. and it's greater

  435. than the sum of its parts

  436. because what God

  437. tells us through

  438. the apostle Paul

  439. in Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  440. is true

  441. that the very same power

  442. that raised Jesus Christ

  443. from the dead

  444. is at work

  445. in you?

  446. Do you?

  447. Do you believe it?

  448. If you do

  449. you are like

  450. Abraham.

  451. Do you believe

  452. that God

  453. keeps his promises?

  454. Do you believe

  455. that no matter

  456. what happens

  457. in history

  458. in this world

  459. in time

  460. and space

  461. in nations

  462. in geopolitics

  463. in families

  464. in generations

  465. that no matter what

  466. the end of history

  467. is a great

  468. wedding feast

  469. between God

  470. and his people?

  471. Do you believe

  472. that no matter

  473. what happens

  474. that will happen?

  475. If you do

  476. you are like

  477. Abraham.

  478. You like Abraham

  479. hope

  480. against hope.

  481. You like Abraham

  482. hope

  483. against all odds.

  484. You like Abraham

  485. believe

  486. in something

  487. that is not

  488. humanly possible.

  489. You like Abraham

  490. believe what's true.

  491. You like Abraham

  492. will see

  493. the reward.

  494. Do you believe

  495. that God

  496. raised Jesus Christ

  497. from the dead?

  498. Do you hope

  499. against hope?

  500. Do you believe

  501. that all the promises

  502. of God

  503. are yes

  504. and amen

  505. in Christ?

  506. Is that

  507. your north

  508. star?

  509. Paul says

  510. don't just talk

  511. about Abraham.

  512. Don't just remember

  513. the stories

  514. about Abraham.

  515. Don't just rehearse

  516. how great

  517. Abraham was

  518. be like

  519. Abraham.

  520. And be like

  521. Abraham

  522. in this sense

  523. that Abraham

  524. believed

  525. in a great

  526. God.

  527. Abraham

  528. believed

  529. in the impossible.

  530. Abraham

  531. believed

  532. in the God

  533. who gives

  534. life to the dead

  535. and calls

  536. into existence

  537. things

  538. that do

  539. not

  540. exist.

  541. that's the

  542. point.

  543. That's the

  544. point of

  545. Abraham's

  546. life.

  547. The final

  548. analysis

  549. we're reminded

  550. of what

  551. Paul later

  552. says in

  553. Romans

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  554. chapter 10.

  555. If you

  556. confess

  557. with your

  558. mouth

  559. that Jesus

  560. is Lord

  561. and believe

  562. in your

  563. heart

  564. that God

  565. raised him

  566. from the

  567. dead

  568. you

  569. will

  570. be saved.

  571. Do you

  572. believe

  573. that God

  574. raised

  575. Jesus

  576. Christ

  577. from

  578. the

  579. dead?

  580. Paul

  581. makes

  582. one more

  583. point.

  584. Not just

  585. is it

  586. that we

  587. are meant

  588. to be

  589. like

  590. Abraham

  591. that

  592. these

  593. things

  594. were not

  595. written

  596. for his

  597. sake

  598. alone

  599. but

  600. for

  601. ours

  602. also.

  603. it is

  604. also

  605. easier

  606. for us

  607. to be

  608. like

  609. Abraham

  610. than

  611. it was

  612. for

  613. Abraham

  614. to be

  615. like

  616. Abraham.

  617. I'll

  618. say that

  619. again.

  620. It is

  621. easier

  622. for us

  623. to be

  624. like

  625. Abraham

  626. than

  627. it was

  628. for

  629. Abraham

  630. to be

  631. like

  632. Abraham

  633. and

  634. it's

  635. easier

  636. for us

  637. for this

  638. one

  639. reason.

  640. Abraham

  641. looked

  642. forward.

  643. Christian

  644. you

  645. look

  646. backward.

  647. Abraham's

  648. hope

  649. and

  650. belief

  651. was

  652. in

  653. something

  654. that

  655. had

  656. not

  657. yet

  658. happened.

  659. Your

  660. hope

  661. and

  662. belief

  663. is

  664. in

  665. something

  666. that

  667. has.

  668. The

  669. death

  670. and

  671. the

  672. resurrection

  673. of

  674. Jesus

  675. Christ.

  676. That's

  677. what Paul

  678. says here

  679. in this

  680. last

  681. verse.

  682. Who

  683. was

  684. delivered

  685. up

  686. for

  687. our

  688. trespasses

  689. and

  690. raised

  691. for

  692. our

  693. justification.

  694. given

  695. up for

  696. our

  697. trespasses

  698. he's

  699. just

  700. saying

  701. what

  702. we've

  703. talked

  704. about

  705. many

  706. times

  707. Jesus

  708. paid

  709. the

  710. penalty

  711. that

  712. we

  713. deserve.

  714. Jesus

  715. took

  716. God's

  717. punishment

  718. so that

  719. we

  720. would

  721. not.

  722. But then

  723. he doesn't

  724. just talk

  725. about

  726. that

  727. he talks

  728. about

  729. Jesus

  730. resurrection

  731. raised

  732. for our

  733. justification.

  734. Wait I

  735. thought

  736. Jesus

  737. death

  738. was for

  739. our

  740. sins.

  741. Why

  742. is it

  743. the

  744. resurrection

  745. that's

  746. given

  747. with our

  748. justification?

  749. Jesus

  750. resurrection

  751. proves

  752. once

  753. and

  754. for

  755. all

  756. that

  757. he

  758. lived

  759. the

  760. perfect

  761. life

  762. that

  763. we

  764. should

  765. have

  766. lived.

  767. If

  768. Jesus

  769. did

  770. not

  771. rise

  772. from

  773. the

  774. dead

  775. if

  776. he

  777. was

  778. only

  779. handed

  780. over

  781. for

  782. our

  783. trespasses

  784. then

  785. his

  786. death

  787. was

  788. not

  789. for

  790. our

  791. sins.

  792. If

  793. Jesus

  794. did

  795. not

  796. rise

  797. from

  798. the

  799. dead

  800. then

  801. Jesus

  802. death

  803. was

  804. for

  805. Jesus.

  806. The

  807. resurrection

  808. proves

  809. once

  810. and

  811. for

  812. all

  813. Jesus

  814. died

  815. for

  816. our

  817. sins

  818. was

  819. raised

  820. for

  821. our

  822. justification.

  823. It

  824. is

  825. the

  826. confirmation

  827. that

  828. everything

  829. God

  830. promised

  831. to

  832. Abraham

  833. was

  834. true.

  835. The

  836. resurrection

  837. is the

  838. confirmation

  839. that

  840. Jesus

  841. did

  842. in

  843. fact

  844. die

  845. for

  846. our

  847. sins

  848. and

  849. live

  850. for

  851. our

  852. righteousness.

  853. What

  854. is the

  855. most

  856. important

  857. part

  858. of the

  859. Abraham

  860. story?

  861. What

  862. should

  863. we

  864. learn

  865. take

  866. away

  867. more

  868. than

  869. anything

  870. else?

  871. It's

  872. this.

  873. Abraham

  874. believed

  875. the

  876. impossible

  877. would

  878. happen

  879. in the

  880. future.

  881. we

  882. know

  883. the

  884. impossible

  885. has

  886. already

  887. happened

  888. in

  889. the

  890. past.

  891. No

  892. unbelief

  893. made him

  894. waver

  895. concerning

  896. the

  897. promise

  898. of

  899. God,

  900. but he

  901. grew

  902. strong

  903. in his

  904. faith

  905. as he

  906. gave

  907. glory

  908. to

  909. God,

  910. fully

  911. convinced

  912. that God

  913. was able

  914. to do

  915. what he

  916. had

  917. promised.

  918. that is

  919. why his

  920. faith

  921. was

  922. counted

  923. to him

  924. as

  925. righteousness.

  926. Has

  927. Jesus

  928. risen

  929. from

  930. the

  931. dead?

  932. Yes,

  933. yes,

  934. he has.

  935. Let's

  936. pray.

  937. Our

  938. Father in

  939. heaven,

  940. we do

  941. praise you

  942. and thank

  943. you again

  944. for your

  945. word.

  946. We thank

  947. you for

  948. the example

  949. of Abraham,

  950. not that he

  951. was great,

  952. but he

  953. believed in

  954. a great

  955. God.

  956. We ask

  957. that you

  958. would make

  959. that true

  960. of us,

  961. that we

  962. would see

  963. clearly

  964. that you

  965. are the

  966. God who

  967. brings life

  968. from the

  969. dead and

  970. calls into

  971. existence

  972. things that

  973. do not

  974. exist.

  975. We ask

  976. all of

  977. these things

  978. in the

  979. mighty name

  980. of Jesus

  981. Christ.

  982. Amen.
