  1. Or a bulletin, turn with me to Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  2. ! If we haven't had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Andy, and I am one of the pastors here.

  3. ! And I'm excited to share with you from God's word.

  4. Romans 5, verses 6 through 11.

    Romans 5:6–11

  5. For while we were still weak, at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly.

  6. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person, though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die.

  7. But God shows his love for us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  8. Since, therefore, we now have been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

  9. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son,

  10. much more now we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life?

  11. More than that, we also rejoice in God, through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  12. through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  13. Let's pray.

  14. Lord, we thank you for your word to us.

  15. May it be sweet.

  16. May we see Christ and the beauties of your love demonstrated through the cross through it.

  17. And we ask this in Christ's name.

  18. Amen.

  19. I'm not sure how many of you are dependent upon electronics or technology in general.

  20. This is not a show of hands, because I know that we'll have some people that love technology,

  21. and some people that just wish it would all go away, right?

  22. Whether you have a phone that you use to keep track of your daily life,

  23. whether you use a tablet for school, you use a computer at work,

  24. everybody uses some kind of electronic.

  25. Even if you have one of those really fancy screens in your car that makes you feel like you're driving a fighter jet,

  26. but you're just driving a minivan.

  27. Any of you out there?

  28. That's just me.

  29. Okay.

  30. So whether you hate it or love it, chances are you've had this issue.

  31. Because it doesn't matter if you like it or love it, you've all had this problem.

  32. You've gone to plug something in and hoping or expecting it's going to charge,

  33. and you might realize it at first, but more often you realize it after a series of hours

  34. when you go to pick up that thing that you need.

  35. It's not charged.

  36. It's still dead.

  37. Or maybe you've depended upon your phone for an alarm clock,

  38. and you've not slept through your alarm at all.

  39. In fact, it didn't even go off because it was dead.

  40. Your devices, your home electronics, your yard equipment, your alarm clocks,

  41. they all need power.

  42. And when the light doesn't turn on when you expect it to,

  43. or the phone doesn't recharge, or the car battery won't start,

  44. and you're stranded on the side of the road,

  45. or the plug's been pulled out of the wall by a toddler,

  46. no matter if you're well-meaning, no matter if you're smart,

  47. no matter if you're hopeful, no matter if you're even skilled,

  48. there's no power.

  49. It's not going to work.

  50. It's not going to work at all.

  51. You have to be connected to the source of power.

  52. Our lives that we live, even our spiritual lives,

  53. work on the same principle,

  54. that we have to be connected to the source of power.

  55. We can bebop along through life and think these great ideas,

  56. or think that we are really smart,

  57. or that we're just getting by,

  58. or we're tough enough to gut it out.

  59. But the reality is that if we're unplugged to the source of power,

  60. it's not going to work.

  61. No matter how hard we try,

  62. and that's even most true,

  63. not in our lives generally,

  64. but specifically in our spiritual lives.

  65. We like to think that we work really hard to make good grades in school.

  66. So working really hard works in this category, right?

  67. Or we like to think ourselves really smart,

  68. or wise, or clever.

  69. I can work less time and still get everything I want.

  70. That's going to work here, right?

  71. But when we apply those same principles,

  72. it's like when we take that plug,

  73. and not plugged it into the wall,

  74. we plugged it into a block of cheese.

  75. Or we put it into a cup.

  76. Don't try this at home.

  77. You might get electrocuted, right?

  78. I don't know how electricity works.

  79. But when I plug it into a block of cheese,

  80. or I put my phone plug into a cup of water,

  81. why would it work?

  82. It's not going to.

  83. So why do we expect in our spiritual lives anything different?

  84. We think that we can have salvation some other way,

  85. but I've just plugged it to a block of cheese.

  86. I try to work really hard,

  87. and I plug it into a cup of water.

  88. Or I don't think I need it at all,

  89. and I leave it sitting on the table.

  90. There's no power.

  91. It's not going to work.

  92. See, when we're unplugged or untethered from all of that,

  93. we're not drawing on the source of power,

  94. and we have nothing.

  95. This morning, this text that Paul shows us,

  96. shows us this,

  97. that salvation comes through the death of Christ.

  98. And that salvation is also realized,

  99. in some sense, through the resurrection.

  100. Salvation is secured by Christ's death,

  101. and then realized through his resurrection.

  102. If you were with us last week,

  103. Matthew showed us that the Christian life

  104. is marked by suffering.

  105. And if you've lived more than a day,

  106. and been awake more than an hour,

  107. you know that.

  108. And in the midst of that,

  109. our Christian life,

  110. we have endurance and hope,

  111. and we have all those blessings

  112. in the midst of difficulty.

  113. But only if we're connected to that source of power.

  114. And this text this morning

  115. shows us that source of power.

  116. It's Christ,

  117. and his death and resurrection.

  118. Now, you might be thinking this morning,

  119. I know, I've heard that all before.

  120. And quite frankly,

  121. it seems really silly

  122. if I try to go anywhere else.

  123. And you're right.

  124. Salvation only comes through the cross.

  125. And quite frankly,

  126. if we think it's anything different,

  127. we deceive ourselves.

  128. And we think,

  129. oh,

  130. I can go to something else.

  131. It can be Jesus plus this thing.

  132. It can be another source of life,

  133. of energy.

  134. But the reality is,

  135. it's not.

  136. And we know that.

  137. Just like when we try to plug it

  138. into a block of cheese,

  139. or a cup of water.

  140. But we do that over and over and over again.

  141. And even if we call upon Christ

  142. in our greatest hour of need,

  143. then we turn about

  144. and we forget it all.

  145. And often,

  146. we take the message of the gospel,

  147. the message of Christianity,

  148. and we divorce it

  149. from that source of power.

  150. Why do we do that?

  151. It's not just silly,

  152. that's stupid.

  153. If we think that that

  154. is a question

  155. that's not true in our day,

  156. or in a day past,

  157. let me remind you

  158. from some famous words.

  159. There's no power in Christianity

  160. if there's a God without wrath

  161. that brings men without sin

  162. into a kingdom without judgment

  163. through a ministry of Christ

  164. without a cross.

  165. Now, I don't agree

  166. with Mr. Reinhold Niebuhr

  167. who wrote that quote.

  168. But he's right.

  169. And Paul wouldn't agree

  170. with everything that he wrote either.

  171. But he would agree with that.

  172. That there is a kingdom

  173. without judgment

  174. and a ministry of Christ

  175. without a cross.

  176. There's no power in that gospel.

  177. There's no power in that Christianity.

  178. In fact,

  179. it's not Christianity at all.

  180. But we do that.

  181. We think that way

  182. even if we call upon

  183. the name of Christ.

  184. Sometimes we unintentionally do it.

  185. We go to the newspaper

  186. and we start clipping.

  187. Not clipping out coupons,

  188. but clipping out important lines

  189. of the story.

  190. Clipping out pictures

  191. until the story

  192. becomes unrecognizable.

  193. We kind of neuter God

  194. if we're honest.

  195. We think

  196. we're transforming lives,

  197. but the reality is

  198. we have no power to do so

  199. because we've cut it out

  200. of the story.

  201. We think

  202. that we're growing in holiness,

  203. but we're not

  204. because we're not

  205. depending upon his spirit.

  206. We're not depending

  207. upon the cross of Christ

  208. as Paul reminds us.

  209. We've clipped out God.

  210. With that,

  211. let's turn our attention

  212. to God's word.

  213. Salvation is secured

  214. by Christ's death.

  215. And that's most often

  216. what we try to cut out

  217. of the story.

  218. We see that

  219. and we think,

  220. oh, that's a really

  221. unpalatable part of scripture.

  222. I don't really like blood.

  223. I don't really like

  224. all that stuff.

  225. Or maybe I'm just

  226. really smart

  227. and I've moved beyond it.

  228. I distinctly remember

  229. being told once

  230. by a very old

  231. southern Presbyterian pastor

  232. that you never talk

  233. about blood

  234. because there's enough

  235. of it in the cross.

  236. And we don't want

  237. to neuter our minds

  238. from thinking

  239. that blood is everywhere.

  240. and lose sight

  241. of the fact

  242. that the blood

  243. of the cross

  244. is the thing

  245. that it achieves

  246. our spiritual life.

  247. And if we talk

  248. about it too much,

  249. we lose sight

  250. of that fact.

  251. It becomes commonplace

  252. to us.

  253. We can't move beyond it

  254. because that is

  255. the source of power.

  256. It is common,

  257. yes,

  258. but it's common,

  259. it's central

  260. in our Christian lives.

  261. look with me

  262. at verse 6.

  263. For while we were

  264. still weak,

  265. at the right time,

  266. Christ died

  267. for the ungodly.

  268. In Christ's death,

  269. we see a couple

  270. of attributes.

  271. Yes,

  272. there is the actual

  273. sacrifice of Christ himself.

  274. We also see

  275. that it's purposeful.

  276. And we see

  277. that he died

  278. for the ungodly.

  279. That's really unpalatable.

  280. It's not as if

  281. we've stumbled

  282. into the atonement.

  283. We've tripped

  284. and fallen into it.

  285. In fact,

  286. we see this

  287. in all of scripture.

  288. It's marching

  289. towards this event.

  290. Think about Leviticus.

  291. If you want to read

  292. gnarly stuff,

  293. Leviticus is where

  294. it's at.

  295. It speaks about

  296. sacrifice of God's people,

  297. how they were made right

  298. in some sense

  299. because of the blood.

  300. The blood was on

  301. the mercy seat

  302. and it was for sin.

  303. The death of animal

  304. sacrifices in the Old Testament

  305. were all pointing

  306. towards this event,

  307. towards this purpose.

  308. And yet,

  309. it doesn't stop there.

  310. We read the Old Testament

  311. earlier.

  312. We saw how God's people

  313. were saved

  314. in the Exodus.

  315. They were redeemed

  316. out of Egypt.

  317. All of it was pointing

  318. to Christ's death.

  319. Christ saving

  320. his people.

  321. And it doesn't stop

  322. there.

  323. Even when he was

  324. walking on this earth,

  325. those that walked

  326. closest with Jesus

  327. didn't,

  328. they struggled

  329. with this idea.

  330. They didn't see it.

  331. And he reminded them

  332. of this fact.

  333. He reminded them

  334. that Christ

  335. came not to do

  336. signs and wonders,

  337. but he came

  338. to die.

  339. That was his purpose.

  340. And as the disciples

  341. struggled with

  342. the idea that

  343. his hour

  344. had not yet come,

  345. it's because

  346. his hour

  347. wasn't to do

  348. signs and wonders,

  349. but his hour

  350. was to die

  351. for the ungodly.

  352. He came for sinners.

  353. The beginning

  354. of verse 6

  355. says that

  356. while they were

  357. weak,

  358. or while we

  359. were weak,

  360. that's really

  361. uncomfortable for us

  362. because we like

  363. to think ourselves

  364. smart,

  365. wise,

  366. tough,

  367. but the parallel

  368. to weak

  369. is later in that

  370. verse.

  371. They're ungodly.

  372. They're not

  373. physically weak,

  374. but they lack

  375. the strength.

  376. They're morally

  377. weak.

  378. They're sinners.

  379. That's not something

  380. that's new to us

  381. in the Christian life.

  382. It's not even

  383. something that's new

  384. to us in the book

  385. of Romans.

  386. If we think about

  387. Romans 4,

  388. as we've been

  389. marching through this,

  390. we have that idea

  391. in Abraham

  392. that God

  393. justifies the

  394. ungodly,

  395. and his faith

  396. is counted to him

  397. as righteousness.

  398. It's not that

  399. they cleaned

  400. themselves up

  401. and got ready

  402. for God.

  403. And the timing

  404. of this event

  405. that Paul says

  406. is just at the

  407. right time,

  408. that all of history

  409. is pointing to

  410. this event.

  411. The conditions

  412. are now set

  413. for his sacrifice.

  414. That picture

  415. that we have

  416. earlier in the

  417. life of Moses

  418. talking about

  419. God delivering

  420. his people.

  421. Israel wandering

  422. around.

  423. Israel being

  424. delivered from

  425. Egypt.

  426. The prophets

  427. even calling

  428. Israel back

  429. to true worship

  430. for their hearts

  431. to be turned.

  432. For the disciples

  433. to see

  434. that his hour

  435. had now come.

  436. The point

  437. of the gospels,

  438. the point

  439. the disciples

  440. missed,

  441. was that Jesus

  442. died,

  443. and he died

  444. for sinners.

  445. All those

  446. shadows,

  447. all of Leviticus,

  448. all of the

  449. example of

  450. Moses,

  451. all of those

  452. prophets calling

  453. Israel back,

  454. it was all

  455. pointing to

  456. this event.

  457. And Paul

  458. will remind

  459. the Galatians

  460. of this

  461. when he says,

  462. when the fullness

  463. of time

  464. had come,

  465. not the end

  466. of time,

  467. but the fullness

  468. of time,

  469. and that time

  470. is Christ

  471. coming and

  472. dying.

  473. Now what

  474. follows verse

  475. six is an

  476. interesting,

  477. it's an

  478. interesting

  479. comparison,

  480. because the

  481. argument goes

  482. something like

  483. this,

  484. if we can

  485. trust God

  486. to take

  487. care of

  488. this,

  489. we should

  490. trust him

  491. to take

  492. care of

  493. that.

  494. So look

  495. with me

  496. at verse

  497. seven,

  498. for one

  499. will scarcely

  500. die for a

  501. righteous person,

  502. though perhaps

  503. for a good

  504. person,

  505. one would

  506. even dare

  507. to die.

  508. If we

  509. think that

  510. Christ

  511. will die

  512. for the

  513. ungodly,

  514. wait a second,

  515. that's not

  516. how this

  517. goes,

  518. he's making

  519. this argument

  520. that if

  521. one will

  522. die for

  523. a righteous

  524. person,

  525. not that,

  526. no,

  527. he doesn't

  528. make that

  529. argument,

  530. he says

  531. no one

  532. even really

  533. wants to

  534. die for

  535. a righteous

  536. person,

  537. though maybe

  538. even for

  539. a good

  540. person you

  541. might die.

  542. So what

  543. he's saying

  544. here is

  545. that,

  546. hey,

  547. you don't

  548. really want

  549. to die

  550. for a

  551. righteous

  552. person,

  553. but maybe

  554. even for

  555. a good

  556. person,

  557. but how

  558. does that

  559. relate to

  560. us?

  561. How does

  562. that relate

  563. to what

  564. Paul has

  565. said earlier?

  566. He's saying

  567. for an

  568. ungodly

  569. person,

  570. you really

  571. don't want

  572. to die.

  573. Now the

  574. fuller context

  575. of this is

  576. something like

  577. this,

  578. those that

  579. were enslaved

  580. might have

  581. warm feelings

  582. towards a

  583. master,

  584. a benefactor

  585. that's rescued

  586. them out of

  587. debt or the

  588. depths of

  589. society,

  590. for that I

  591. will sacrifice,

  592. for that I

  593. might even

  594. die.

  595. But that's

  596. not what

  597. Paul is

  598. saying about

  599. us,

  600. is it?

  601. He's saying

  602. we stand in

  603. opposition to

  604. the Lord,

  605. to the

  606. ones that

  607. say to

  608. him,

  609. no I

  610. don't need

  611. you,

  612. to the

  613. ones that

  614. look to

  615. him,

  616. not with

  617. warm feelings

  618. of kindness,

  619. but enmity,

  620. for that

  621. Christ has

  622. died.

  623. Now the

  624. cross,

  625. the cross of

  626. Christ is not

  627. difficult for

  628. us on its

  629. face,

  630. but it's

  631. often difficult

  632. for us to

  633. comprehend in

  634. our hearts and

  635. how we live

  636. and how we

  637. think.

  638. Because of

  639. this.

  640. There's a

  641. great theologian

  642. named J.

  643. Gresham

  644. Macon that

  645. said this,

  646. it's not the

  647. Bible doctrine

  648. of the

  649. atonement,

  650. which is

  651. difficult for

  652. us to

  653. understand,

  654. that a

  655. man,

  656. that God

  657. dies for

  658. us,

  659. that Jesus

  660. dies for

  661. sinners.

  662. What really

  663. is incomprehensible

  664. are the

  665. elaborate modern

  666. efforts to

  667. get rid of

  668. the Bible

  669. doctrine in

  670. the interest

  671. of human

  672. pride.

  673. What he's

  674. saying is,

  675. is that in

  676. our own flesh

  677. we try to

  678. do this.

  679. We try to

  680. remove the

  681. cross and

  682. think we're

  683. going to be

  684. okay.

  685. And we

  686. miss all of

  687. the beauty

  688. that we

  689. just talked

  690. about.

  691. Our pride

  692. gets in the

  693. way because

  694. we try to

  695. reconcile

  696. scripture,

  697. we try to

  698. reconcile the

  699. fact that we

  700. want to do

  701. it ourselves

  702. and we

  703. trick ourselves

  704. into thinking

  705. that we

  706. can.

  707. And Paul

  708. reminds us

  709. that if we

  710. do that,

  711. there is no

  712. salvation at

  713. all.

  714. Maybe that's

  715. you this

  716. morning.

  717. Maybe you've

  718. come into

  719. this place

  720. and saying,

  721. I'm good.

  722. I don't

  723. need this.

  724. In fact,

  725. this seems

  726. really bloody

  727. and I don't

  728. really like

  729. that.

  730. Maybe I'm

  731. too smart

  732. for this.

  733. But each

  734. and every

  735. one of us

  736. need the

  737. reconciling

  738. power of

  739. the cross.

  740. And if we

  741. try to pull

  742. that out of

  743. the gospel,

  744. we try to

  745. pull that out

  746. of Christianity,

  747. we're left

  748. with nothing.

  749. we have

  750. no power,

  751. we have

  752. no Christian

  753. message.

  754. Or maybe

  755. we try to

  756. add something

  757. in.

  758. It's the

  759. cross plus

  760. something else.

  761. The cross

  762. plus education.

  763. Education is a

  764. good thing.

  765. But it's not

  766. an ultimate

  767. thing.

  768. It doesn't

  769. do anything

  770. from moving

  771. you from

  772. ungodly and

  773. standing at

  774. odds to the

  775. Lord to

  776. being reconciled

  777. to him.

  778. And you

  779. might think,

  780. well of course

  781. we all know

  782. this, but we

  783. all do this

  784. each day.

  785. Maybe it's not

  786. education, but

  787. we think of

  788. safety and

  789. security of

  790. our bank

  791. accounts.

  792. We think about

  793. the value that

  794. God provides

  795. in work and

  796. think I want

  797. to be a

  798. Christian, but

  799. I also want

  800. to be seen

  801. as healthy,

  802. as wise,

  803. as successful.

  804. When we do

  805. that, we

  806. remove the

  807. cross,

  808. as the

  809. source of

  810. power in

  811. our Christian

  812. lives.

  813. We're reminded

  814. that the

  815. cross is the

  816. source of

  817. power, but

  818. we're not

  819. really told

  820. why God

  821. uses the

  822. cross until

  823. we read

  824. verse 8.

  825. But God

  826. shows his

  827. love for us

  828. in that while

  829. we were still

  830. sinners, Christ

  831. died for us.

  832. That's a

  833. familiar verse

  834. to many of

  835. us.

  836. But we

  837. really just

  838. skip on by

  839. something that's

  840. really important

  841. in this

  842. verse.

  843. We see that

  844. love is a

  845. motivating factor.

  846. It's not a

  847. potential he

  848. sees in them.

  849. It's not

  850. really anything

  851. in them at

  852. all.

  853. Their wealth,

  854. their wisdom,

  855. their talents.

  856. It's all about

  857. who he is.

  858. God comes to

  859. them in love

  860. and he

  861. describes himself

  862. in these terms

  863. against the

  864. backdrop of

  865. disobedience.

  866. forgiveness.

  867. He reminds

  868. them that he

  869. is the same

  870. God here

  871. as he

  872. reminded them

  873. in the Old

  874. Testament

  875. where he

  876. proclaims,

  877. I am the

  878. Lord,

  879. the Lord,

  880. a God

  881. merciful and

  882. gracious,

  883. slow to

  884. anger,

  885. abounding in

  886. steadfast love

  887. and faithfulness,

  888. keeping steadfast love

  889. for thousands,

  890. forgiving iniquity

  891. and transgression

  892. of sin.

  893. And in the

  894. same breath

  895. he says this,

  896. he upholds

  897. his own

  898. justice but

  899. who will by

  900. no means

  901. clear the

  902. guilty,

  903. visiting the

  904. iniquity of

  905. the fathers

  906. on the

  907. children and

  908. the children's

  909. children to

  910. the third and

  911. fourth generations.

  912. Paul shows

  913. us the burning

  914. clarity of the

  915. cross that it's

  916. because he

  917. comes in love

  918. and that he

  919. sends his

  920. son but

  921. then in doing

  922. so it's a

  923. definite plan.

  924. He hasn't

  925. tripped and

  926. fallen into

  927. the atonement.

  928. He's

  929. motivated by

  930. love but

  931. it's held in

  932. tension with

  933. his holiness

  934. and his

  935. desire for

  936. justice.

  937. Love and

  938. loss of

  939. justice is

  940. often where

  941. we find

  942. ourselves.

  943. We get

  944. confused and

  945. we think it

  946. can't stand

  947. out from the

  948. crowd.

  949. If you watch

  950. the World

  951. Series this

  952. year, there

  953. was a guy

  954. almost every

  955. game he was

  956. in the

  957. background of

  958. home plate

  959. and he was

  960. wearing an

  961. orange jersey

  962. and orange

  963. hat upside

  964. down sometimes

  965. and that man

  966. is known as

  967. the Marlins

  968. man and the

  969. Marlins man

  970. goes and

  971. travels all

  972. over the

  973. country and

  974. sometimes the

  975. world to go

  976. to these big

  977. sporting events.

  978. I think he's

  979. been to

  980. something like

  981. 200 World

  982. Series games,

  983. NBA finals,

  984. he's been to

  985. horse races,

  986. I don't know

  987. what the horse

  988. races are called

  989. but he's been

  990. to those too and

  991. he always shows

  992. up in that

  993. orange jersey.

  994. He stands out

  995. among the

  996. crowd especially

  997. when the teams

  998. aren't even the

  999. Marlins, they're

  1000. very often not

  1001. the Marlins if

  1002. you know anything

  1003. about baseball

  1004. because they're

  1005. not very good

  1006. but he shows up

  1007. in his orange

  1008. jersey instead

  1009. of the blue

  1010. of the Blue

  1011. Jays or the

  1012. white or blue

  1013. of the Dodgers

  1014. and he sits in

  1015. the background

  1016. and he sits

  1017. right behind

  1018. home plate and

  1019. you can't miss

  1020. it.

  1021. He stands

  1022. out.

  1023. Now he spends

  1024. 300 days on

  1025. the road going

  1026. to sporting

  1027. events, he spends

  1028. countless dollars.

  1029. Now when we

  1030. think of him, we

  1031. think of him being

  1032. out of place, he's

  1033. not for either

  1034. team.

  1035. He stands out

  1036. among the crowd

  1037. but it's almost a

  1038. distraction.

  1039. The love that we

  1040. see in this passage

  1041. is not a

  1042. distraction, it's

  1043. not out of place

  1044. like Marlins

  1045. man.

  1046. In fact, it's

  1047. the motivator

  1048. by which we

  1049. get to the

  1050. cross that God

  1051. sends his son

  1052. to die.

  1053. It's not out of

  1054. place at all, it's

  1055. not ill-fitting, it's

  1056. not even crazy, it's

  1057. the very reason that

  1058. Christ died for us.

  1059. The love of God

  1060. for sinners.

  1061. Have you ever

  1062. thought about why

  1063. that's difficult for

  1064. us?

  1065. Yes, we have some

  1066. voices in the

  1067. modern day that say

  1068. love looks like

  1069. this and then we

  1070. redefine it in any

  1071. way that we want.

  1072. But in doing so,

  1073. we kind of, in

  1074. responding to that,

  1075. we nuance our way

  1076. and think, hey, I

  1077. can't even talk about

  1078. love because there's

  1079. not a good definition

  1080. for it.

1081. And when we do that,

  1082. we try to, we

  1083. almost minimize the

  1084. fact that God loves

  1085. sinners.

1086. Or we try to move

  1087. beyond that simple

  1088. fact and we think

  1089. that God is pleased

  1090. with me because of

  1091. what I've done.

  1092. That's not a problem

  1093. in the modern day,

  1094. that's a problem

  1095. with every heart.

  1096. That's a problem

  1097. with your heart

  1098. and that's a problem

  1099. with my heart.

  1100. Sometimes love is

  1101. difficult for us

  1102. because we don't

  1103. have a good earthly

  1104. picture of it.

  1105. And we struggle

  1106. and think, God

  1107. can't love me as a

  1108. father because my

  1109. father was a jerk

  1110. or worse.

  1111. That's not true.

  1112. Sometimes we struggle

  1113. with love because we

  1114. reduced it to the

  1115. romance that we see

  1116. on TV and think

  1117. it's like what we

  1118. see in these fantasies

  1119. or what we think

  1120. about in wedded

  1121. bliss.

  1122. And then we struggle

  1123. because we don't

  1124. have a good picture

  1125. of love.

  1126. Or maybe we even

  1127. think love is a

  1128. thing for sissies.

  1129. That we don't talk

  1130. about love if we're

  1131. big, strong, burly

  1132. men.

  1133. I'll tell you

  1134. that I have seen

  1135. the pictures of

  1136. love of the

  1137. strongest and

  1138. toughest people I

  1139. know in a moment

  1140. displaying love

  1141. and tenderness.

  1142. It's not a thing

  1143. for sissies.

  1144. Or maybe love

  1145. hurt us and we

  1146. think love will

  1147. never happen again.

  1148. Or we think we

  1149. don't deserve it.

  1150. Or we've had a

  1151. child who walked

  1152. away from our

  1153. love and has

  1154. thrown it in our

  1155. face.

  1156. Or a wife.

  1157. Or a husband.

  1158. And we think

  1159. that's the picture

  1160. of love.

  1161. The picture of

  1162. love that we

  1163. have is this

  1164. picture here of

  1165. God sending his

  1166. son for people

  1167. that were still

  1168. enemies.

  1169. Sending that which

  1170. was most precious

  1171. for us while we

  1172. were yet sinners.

  1173. Oftentimes we

  1174. think we can make

  1175. ourselves lovely

  1176. to the Lord.

  1177. But in spite of

  1178. our sin, God

  1179. loves you.

  1180. In spite of who

  1181. we are, God

  1182. still is gracious

  1183. to you.

  1184. And that picture

  1185. of love, not

  1186. those others,

  1187. should transform

  1188. us.

  1189. It should transform

  1190. how we think of

  1191. ourselves.

  1192. That we are loved

  1193. because of God

  1194. loving us.

  1195. Our interactions

  1196. with others

  1197. shouldn't be

  1198. transactional anymore.

  1199. If you do this,

  1200. then I will love

  1201. you.

  1202. No.

  1203. For those

  1204. difficult people,

  1205. those people that

  1206. are nasty, or

  1207. hey, I don't even

  1208. like their personality.

  1209. I love them

  1210. because God has

  1211. loved me.

  1212. That should

  1213. transform how we

  1214. interact in this

  1215. room and outside

  1216. the walls of this

  1217. building.

  1218. It transforms our

  1219. lives because then

  1220. we go to our

  1221. neighbors with the

  1222. gospel, then we

  1223. send our money

  1224. forth because God

  1225. has loved me.

  1226. I have known

  1227. love and I want

  1228. others to know

  1229. that same love.

  1230. Christian love

  1231. should compel us

  1232. to fulfill the

  1233. Great Commission.

  1234. It should compel

  1235. us to love God

  1236. and love our

  1237. neighbor.

  1238. Salvation is

  1239. secured by

  1240. Christ's death.

  1241. All those

  1242. benefits, it's

  1243. motivated by love,

  1244. yes, but salvation

  1245. is also realized in

  1246. his resurrection.

  1247. That part is a

  1248. really tough for us.

  1249. Let's turn our

  1250. attention there now.

  1251. Look at verse

  1252. nine.

  1253. Since therefore we

  1254. have now been

  1255. justified by his

  1256. blood, much more

  1257. shall we be saved

  1258. by faith, shall be

  1259. saved by him from

  1260. the wrath of God.

  1261. It's really easy to

  1262. see the cross of

  1263. Christ in this.

  1264. It's much more

  1265. difficult to see the

  1266. resurrection.

1267. We see that Paul is

  1268. pivoting from

  1269. something because he

  1270. uses since therefore,

  1271. but we don't know

  1272. what has happened in

  1273. the past and what

  1274. he's looking towards

  1275. in the future.

  1276. In a contrast, he's

  1277. saying you've been

  1278. justified by Christ's

  1279. death.

  1280. And then he's kind

  1281. of looking towards a

  1282. somewhat future event.

  1283. You might be

  1284. thinking, wait a

  1285. second, I thought I

  1286. put my faith in

  1287. Jesus and I'm good.

1288. Yes, you are if you

  1289. put your faith in

  1290. Jesus.

  1291. But there's a coming

  1292. day of judgment.

1293. And then by doing so,

  1294. you're also saved from

  1295. that, that day of

  1296. wrath.

  1297. Throughout this

  1298. passage, the mechanism

  1299. by which salvation is

  1300. accomplished is through

  1301. Jesus, both through his

  1302. death and resurrection.

  1303. resurrection.

  1304. Look at verse 9.

  1305. We have now been

  1306. justified by his

  1307. blood.

1308. Much more shall we be

1309. saved by him from the

  1310. wrath of God.

  1311. He's making this

  1312. argument by way of

  1313. comparison.

  1314. He's saying, if this

  1315. happened, then surely

  1316. that will happen.

1317. And he continues it in

  1318. verse 10.

  1319. For while we were

  1320. enemies, we were

1321. reconciled to God by the

  1322. death of his son.

1323. Much more now that we

  1324. are reconciled shall we

1325. be saved by his life.

  1326. Life, when he's

  1327. referencing life there,

1328. it's not the actions of

1329. Jesus while he was alive

  1330. on this earth.

  1331. That's shorthand for the

  1332. resurrection.

  1333. There's no longer

  1334. alienation from sinners

  1335. against a God because

  1336. of their offense.

  1337. The dividing wall of

  1338. separation has been

1339. torn down and now they

1340. shall be saved by his

  1341. life.

  1342. life.

  1343. The resurrection secures

  1344. all of this.

1345. And that life that Christ

1346. was raised to is a

  1347. guarantee that that will

  1348. happen to us.

  1349. Because so often our

1350. focus is on, yes, the

1351. death of Christ, which we

1352. said we try to skip past

  1353. what happened on Friday.

  1354. But we forget what

  1355. happens on Easter Sunday.

  1356. It accomplishes all these

  1357. things.

1358. And those are held in

1359. balance in the life of

  1360. Christ.

1361. We can't have one without

  1362. the other.

1363. The beauty of this is it's

  1364. confirmation that Christ's

  1365. death really accomplished

  1366. forgiveness of sin.

1367. And for us, it really

  1368. accomplishes

  1369. everlasting life.

  1370. It secured

  1371. our salvation.

  1372. resurrection.

  1373. It reconciles us.

  1374. It justifies us.

1375. And the resurrection is a

  1376. demonstration that it

1377. will happen, that we'll be

1378. saved from the wrath of

  1379. God.

1380. On the heels of the

  1381. Reformation, or Reformation

1382. Day, we think a lot about

1383. what Martin Luther did, of

1384. standing on the shoulders of

1385. what people have said before

  1386. in the past.

  1387. Christ.

1388. And this idea that we are

1389. saved by his resurrection is

  1390. essential to the gospel.

1391. That we're saved by his

  1392. life.

1393. Let me remind you, not with

1394. the words of Martin Luther,

  1395. but something much, much

  1396. older.

  1397. Because we might trick

  1398. ourselves into thinking,

1399. Martin Luther just came up

  1400. with this all, right?

  1401. What about the Nicene

  1402. Creed?

  1403. Nicene Creed's

  1404. 1700th anniversary this year

  1405. in 2025.

1406. And it says this about

1407. Jesus and his death and

  1408. resurrection.

1409. It answers all those pesky

  1410. questions that kind of

1411. linger in our minds when we

  1412. think, what did Jesus

  1413. actually do?

1414. Well, the Nicene Creed, the

  1415. Apostles' Creed, they

  1416. answer them for us.

1417. He was crucified for us

  1418. under Pontius Pilate.

1419. He suffered and was buried.

1420. The third day he rose again

  1421. according to the

  1422. scriptures.

1423. Jesus both died and was

  1424. resurrected.

  1425. the Nicene Creed confesses

1426. what we read in Romans 5,

1427. that Christ died and was

  1428. resurrected.

1429. And Paul reminds us that's

  1430. applied to us.

1431. So where does that leave us?

1432. Where does that leave us this

  1433. morning?

1434. Where does that leave us in

1435. this story in Romans 5?

1436. It leaves us with this.

  1437. Look at verse 11.

1438. More than that, we also

1439. rejoice in God through our

1440. Lord Jesus Christ, through whom

  1441. we have now received

  1442. reconciliation.

1443. He kind of flips it.

  1444. We've received reconciliation,

1445. but more than that, we

  1446. rejoice.

1447. Our response at knowing this

  1448. should be rejoicing.

1449. We should be so moved by

  1450. Christ's death and

  1451. resurrection, we rejoice

  1452. because it means our

1453. salvation is secure and that

  1454. we will escape coming

1455. judgment from the wrath of

  1456. God.

1457. It's really going to happen

1458. because he sent his own

1459. son and his own son just

  1460. didn't die but was

  1461. resurrected.

1462. And we're not so good as we

  1463. often assume.

1464. We're left lacking, coming up

1465. short in the measuring stick,

1466. but that's okay because Christ

1467. has paid the penalty for our

  1468. sin.

1469. And we're led there by the

  1470. Father's love.

1471. And for all that, we should

  1472. rejoice because we've been

  1473. reconciled with the Father.

1474. rejoice at his great love.

1475. Rejoice for him sending his

  1476. son.

  1477. Rejoice that Christ's death

  1478. paid for our sin.

1479. And rejoice that has been

  1480. secured and claimed and

1481. really happening because of the

  1482. resurrection.

1483. Rejoice because it wasn't just

  1484. for them.

1485. It wasn't just for me.

  1486. It was for us.

  1487. For you.

  1488. For me.

1489. Will you rejoice with that good

  1490. news this morning?

  1491. Let's pray.

  1492. Lord, we're reminded in Romans 5

1493. that we are to rejoice at Christ's

1494. death, which seems like a weird

  1495. thing.

1496. We're to rejoice in his

  1497. resurrection because those things

  1498. secure our salvation.

1499. And Father, they testify to what

1500. will happen in the future.

1501. May we not lose sight of that

  1502. fact, Father.

1503. May we rejoice because of it.

1504. This we pray in Christ's name.

  1505. Amen.
