  1. In the book of Romans.

  2. You'll remember that the book of Romans is a letter.

  3. ! It's a letter written by the Apostle Paul in the 50s A.D.

  4. It's called Romans because Paul writes it to the churches in the city of Rome.

  5. And at the end of the day, it is a letter that is about the gospel.

  6. It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection.

  7. Last week, we started chapter 6, and we had this question.

  8. If God forgives sin, why not just sin more?

  9. And that's the question Paul asked in verse 1.

  10. He said, what shall we say then?

  11. Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound?

  12. If you were here last week, you'll remember the answer was no.

  13. That doesn't make any sense.

  14. It doesn't make any sense because you've died to sin,

  15. and you know that you've died to sin because of your union with Christ.

  16. And then Paul ended verse 4 talking about walking in newness of life,

  17. which is the life that's empowered by the Holy Spirit,

  18. the life where the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead is at work in you.

  19. This week, we continue that same question, but we expand on it.

  20. It's the same topic.

  21. We're picking up where we left off with verse 4, walking in newness of life.

  22. And this passage takes us the next step, which is this.

  23. How do we walk in that life?

  24. If the glory of the Father raised Christ from the dead,

  25. and that power is at work in us,

  26. what do we do with it?

  27. How do we walk in it?

  28. It's going to be what we look at this week and next week.

  29. Now, in these verses, verses 5 through 11,

  30. Paul is actually going to repeat a lot of what he said in verses 1 through 4.

  31. He's even going to repeat some of what we looked at in chapter 5, verses 12 through 21.

  32. Okay, so we're going to focus this morning.

  33. Not every verse is going to receive the same amount of attention

  34. because some verses are repeating what's come before.

  35. Our focus this morning is on two new concepts,

  36. verses 6 and 7.

  37. We're going to see that we are free from the slavery of sin.

  38. Verse 11, Paul tells us,

  39. consider ourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  40. So our focus is in those two areas,

  41. focusing especially on verses 6 and 7,

  42. the idea of being free from the slavery of sin.

  43. Focusing also on verse 11,

  44. we consider ourselves dead to sin,

  45. alive to God in Christ.

  46. Jesus.

  47. It's with that that I invite you to turn with me to Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  48. You can turn in your Bible.

  49. You'll also find it on page 7 of your worship guide.

  50. As we turn to it, remember that this is God's word.

  51. And Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is like a hammer

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  52. that breaks a rock into pieces,

  53. which is a way of saying that there is nothing more powerful than God's word.

  54. So that's why we read it now, Romans chapter 6,

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  55. starting at verse 5.

  56. For if we have been united with him in a death like his,

  57. we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.

  58. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing,

  59. so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

  60. For the one who has died has been set free from sin.

  61. Verse 8.

  62. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

  63. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again.

  64. Death no longer has dominion over him.

  65. For the death he died, he died to sin once for all.

  66. But the life he lives, he lives to God.

  67. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  68. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  69. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you again for your word that you've given to us.

  70. We thank you that you've united us to yourself.

  71. That when Christ died, we died.

  72. And when he rose, he brought us new life.

  73. We ask that you'd remind us of those truths this morning,

  74. that you would bring them to life in our hearts, in our lives, in our minds.

  75. That you would help us to understand your word.

  76. Even more than that, you would show us Jesus Christ.

  77. We would see his great glory and power and majesty and holiness.

  78. His authority, his mercy, his grace, and his love.

  79. And we ask that you would use our time together to grow our love and affection,

  80. our reverence in all, our obedience to Christ.

  81. We ask these things in his mighty name.

  82. Amen.

  83. A couple of years ago, a friend of mine took a trip to the sand dunes in southern Colorado.

  84. And as she was hiking up the sand dunes, she came to the hardest part of the trail.

  85. She's hiking barefoot through the sand, and the trail becomes narrow.

  86. And as she was coming along, trying to get to the top,

  87. there was this obnoxious woman who was spread out, laying down on the ground,

  88. just blocking the path entirely.

  89. And not only was she just spread out, lying down, blocking the path entirely,

  90. but she was actually smirking.

  91. And refusing to move as people would come up along this trail.

  92. And you'd think, on a normal trail, this wouldn't be a big deal.

  93. But this is the sand dunes.

  94. And so it's hard enough as it is to walk on the trail.

  95. It's even harder to navigate around someone who is spread out on the trail.

  96. And my friend was hiking barefoot, so that makes it even more challenging.

  97. And so as she told this story, she said this,

  98. I wanted to kick sand in her face.

  99. Which is understandable.

  100. And the plan, of course, would be she's going to pretend it was an accident.

  101. Oh, sorry, I didn't mean for my foot to move in that direction.

  102. But she said, but then I remembered,

  103. I'm a child of God.

  104. So she didn't.

  105. She didn't kick sand in her face.

  106. I tell you that story because that is the point of this passage.

  107. In fact, that might capture some of the point of the end of chapter 5

  108. and what we saw last week.

  109. That is what it looks like to walk in newness of life,

  110. according to Paul in this passage.

  111. Walking in newness of life is remembering who you are.

  112. Now, my friend could have said,

  113. you know, I remembered what I remember from Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  114. that I was in Adam and now I'm in Christ

  115. and the power of sin has ceased to have authority over me

  116. and that when Christ died, I died,

  117. and that the reign of sin no longer controls the center of my heart

  118. and so I've risen to resurrection life,

  119. which is the newness of life that's empowered

  120. by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  121. She could have said all of that,

  122. but she captured all of that by simply saying,

  123. I remembered I am a child of God.

  124. That's why I don't kick sand in people's face.

  125. Romans chapter 6 is detailed and technical and complicated.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  126. Romans chapter 5 was the same way,

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  127. but at the end of the day,

  128. as we move through those things and understand them,

  129. I want you to remember that.

  130. The Christian does not continue in sin

  131. because the Christian is a child of God.

  132. It's as simple as that.

  133. So as we move through this passage,

  134. that is the big idea.

  135. The Christian instead grows to look more and more like Jesus Christ.

  136. So as we navigate through verses 5 and 11,

  137. if you're tempted to get lost,

  138. I want you to remember that is the big idea.

  139. I am a child of God.

  140. Much of this passage, as I mentioned,

  141. is repetition from last week,

  142. so we're going to move quickly through some of it.

  143. Verse 5 tells us why we have the newness of life

  144. that was mentioned in verse 4.

  145. Sin, this is what verse 5 is telling us,

  146. sin lost power because of Christ's death.

  147. Life gains power because of Christ's resurrection.

  148. Sin lost power because of Christ's death.

  149. Life gains power because of Christ's resurrection.

  150. Jesus died, you died.

  151. Jesus rose, you rise.

  152. By the way, that's the same thing that verse 8 is telling us.

  153. Verse 8 is also saying,

  154. Jesus' death, our death.

  155. Jesus' life, our life.

  156. That takes us then to verse 6,

  157. which is the most confusing verse in this section

  158. because of two phrases.

  159. It uses the phrase,

  160. the old self and the body of sin.

  161. We know that our old self was crucified with him

  162. in order that the body of sin

  163. might be brought to nothing.

  164. And when he says the old self,

  165. he is talking about what we discussed

  166. at the end of chapter 5,

  167. you when you were in Adam.

  168. So the old self is the self

  169. when sin controlled and owned your heart.

  170. The old self is you

  171. when sin owned and controlled your heart.

  172. The body of sin is related

  173. but not identical to the old self.

  174. The body of sin is how the old self

  175. in the totality of your person

  176. played out in real time and space.

  177. So we could put it this way.

  178. You are no longer in Adam,

  179. so no old self.

  180. Therefore, your entire life has changed.

  181. No body of sin.

  182. That's simply what Paul is saying in a sense.

  183. That's again what we saw last week.

  184. He's telling us again,

  185. sin doesn't rule over you.

  186. You don't have to obey it anymore.

  187. Sin does not rule over you.

  188. You don't have to obey it anymore.

  189. That takes us to the new concept for this week

  190. at the end of verse 6,

  191. which is the concept of slavery.

  192. Verse 6, he says,

  193. you no longer be enslaved to sin.

  194. That's the negative.

  195. You're not enslaved.

  196. Now verse 7 gives us the positive.

  197. You've been set free from sin.

  198. And Paul's again basically saying,

  199. remember what I told you in verses 1 through 4.

  200. You are free from the power of sin.

  201. So verses 6 and 7,

  202. two sides of the same coin.

  203. You're no longer a slave,

  204. but free.

  205. And so that's the new idea

  206. that he introduces in this passage.

  207. And so as we think about

  208. what it means to be enslaved to sin,

  209. I want to return to my

  210. non-sand-kicking friend.

  211. If you're not a Christian,

  212. you might be thinking,

  213. that's the stupidest illustration

  214. of Christianity I've ever heard.

  215. I actually don't need Christianity

  216. to not kick sand in people's faces.

  217. I'm an adult.

  218. I have something called self-control.

  219. And if you thought that,

  220. you would be right.

  221. You probably do have self-control.

  222. Most of you are adults.

  223. And you would still be a slave to sin.

  224. Whether you do that specific action or not,

  225. sin is still the ruling power in your life.

  226. Whether you do that specific action or not,

  227. sin is still the ruling power in your life.

  228. Remember, we talked about this

  229. in Genesis chapter 20.

    Genesis 20 chapter mention

  230. I think that was over the summer

  231. with the story of Abimelech and Abraham.

  232. And we said, look,

  233. sometimes Christians act poorly

  234. and pagans behave really well.

  235. The Dutch theologian Herman Bavinck explains it.

  236. He says, look,

  237. non-Christians can refrain from sinful actions.

  238. But,

  239. non-Christians can refrain from sinful actions,

  240. but it is a battle,

  241. this is what he calls it,

  242. a battle from the outside.

  243. They cannot do what he,

  244. he cannot invade the inner forces

  245. of the heart.

  246. They cannot attack the evil at its roots.

  247. They cannot invade the inner fortress of the heart.

  248. They cannot attack the evil at its roots.

  249. Then gives us another category.

  250. If you're not a Christian,

  251. you can,

  252. by exercising your self-control,

  253. restrain and limit sin.

  254. You can,

  255. even if you're not a Christian,

  256. restrain and limit sin.

  257. But there are some things you can't do.

  258. Bavinck says,

  259. you cannot cleanse it or renew it.

  260. You cannot cleanse it or renew it.

  261. In other words,

  262. yes,

  263. you can be someone who's not a Christian

  264. and you can live a moral life

  265. in certain ways.

  266. And you can refrain from certain actions,

  267. but when you do that,

  268. at your very best,

  269. you are white knuckling.

  270. You are holding on with your strength

  271. to restrain your lusts and your impulses.

  272. You're trying to keep those things at bay.

  273. But you cannot cleanse your heart.

  274. You cannot renew it.

  275. Of course,

  276. we've talked about this other idea before,

  277. that something is only truly good

  278. and pleasing to God

  279. if it's done for the right reasons,

  280. which is for God's honor and his glory.

  281. Of course,

  282. that's not the function, right,

  283. of someone who is white knuckling

  284. certain behaviors.

  285. Bob Vink says,

  286. you know,

  287. someone might behave

  288. because they want respectability.

  289. They might behave

  290. because of the morals

  291. of the culture around them.

  292. But,

  293. if sin controls

  294. the inner fortress of your heart,

  295. you are indeed its slave.

  296. We can think again

  297. of what happened

  298. with my friend.

  299. You might notice

  300. what her reasoning was not.

  301. Notice what her power was not.

  302. She didn't say,

  303. I was going to kick sand in her face,

  304. but then I thought,

  305. what will people think?

  306. What if someone saw me?

  307. That would be the power of shame.

  308. She'd be using shame

  309. to kind of hold her behavior at bay.

  310. She didn't say,

  311. what will happen?

  312. What if this woman stands up

  313. and wants to have a fist fight with me?

  314. That'd be the power of fear, right?

  315. That would be

  316. what's motivating her.

  317. That would have been

  318. fighting from the outside, right?

  319. That would have been

  320. the fortress

  321. that she can't penetrate,

  322. but she's holding,

  323. restraining,

  324. and limiting sin.

  325. But no,

  326. when she said,

  327. I didn't do it

  328. because I'm a child of God,

  329. what she's saying is this.

  330. The inner fortress

  331. of my heart

  332. has changed.

  333. The power center

  334. of my life

  335. no longer has sin

  336. in the chair.

  337. In my command center,

  338. at the very inner place

  339. of my heart,

  340. it's actually Jesus Christ

  341. ruling and reigning

  342. as king.

  343. And so I'm not

  344. white knuckling,

  345. not controlling

  346. my behavior

  347. for respectability

  348. or because of the society

  349. around me.

  350. No,

  351. I'm a child of God.

  352. The power of God

  353. by his spirit,

  354. the same power

  355. that raised Jesus Christ

  356. from the dead

  357. is at work

  358. cleansing,

  359. renewing,

  360. and transforming

  361. me.

  362. Even more than that,

  363. what my friend was saying

  364. was I did the right thing

  365. for the right reason.

  366. I didn't do it

  367. to escape consequences,

  368. I didn't do it

  369. to escape shame,

  370. I did it

  371. for God's honor

  372. and his glory.

  373. I'm his child.

  374. Why would I do

  375. anything else?

  376. That's what we sang

  377. about our second song

  378. this morning.

  379. We sang Run and Run.

  380. It says this

  381. in the first verse.

  382. Run and run,

  383. the law demands,

  384. which is saying,

  385. this is when you're

  386. trying to fight

  387. from outside the fortress,

  388. but gives me

  389. neither feet nor hands.

  390. In other words,

  391. your only tool

  392. is white knuckling.

  393. Better news,

  394. the gospel brings,

  395. it bids me fly,

  396. it gives me wings.

  397. Wings.

  398. Those wings,

  399. the power of the Holy Spirit,

  400. the glory of God

  401. that raised Christ

  402. from the dead

  403. at work in the heart

  404. and life of the believer.

  405. We also saw it

  406. in our Old Testament

  407. reading this morning

  408. from Ezekiel chapter 36.

    Ezekiel 36 chapter mention

  409. What does God promise?

  410. This is on page three

  411. of your worship guide.

  412. I will cleanse you,

  413. I will give you

  414. a new heart.

  415. I will remove

  416. the heart of stone

  417. from your flesh

  418. and give you

  419. a heart of flesh.

  420. That's in a sense

  421. what my friend was saying.

  422. God has given me

  423. a new heart.

  424. When she did that,

  425. she was following,

  426. in a sense,

  427. the other new concept

  428. in this passage,

  429. verse 11.

  430. Verse 11 says,

  431. so you also must

  432. consider yourselves

  433. dead to sin

  434. and alive to God

  435. in Christ Jesus.

  436. And what Paul

  437. is saying there is,

  438. hey,

  439. remember what's true.

  440. It's true

  441. that you are

  442. dead to sin

  443. and alive to God

  444. in Christ Jesus.

  445. Now you need to

  446. consider yourself

  447. that way.

  448. You need to remember that.

  449. You need to think

  450. about yourself

  451. in those terms.

  452. You need to remind yourself

  453. of what's already true.

  454. That is how you take hold

  455. of the power

  456. that we saw last week.

  457. It's also saying,

  458. hey,

  459. it's actually really easy

  460. to forget that you're

  461. in Christ

  462. and to think

  463. that you're still

  464. in Adam.

  465. It's easy to forget

  466. that you belong to God

  467. and he's changing

  468. your heart.

  469. And so you have to

  470. constantly be

  471. reminding yourself,

  472. remembering,

  473. coming back again

  474. and again to what is true.

  475. And what is true

  476. is this,

  477. when Jesus died,

  478. you died.

  479. when Jesus rose

  480. from the dead,

  481. he gave you

  482. new life.

  483. Scottish pastor

  484. named Sinclair Ferguson

  485. illustrates this

  486. with this concept

  487. of being called up

  488. to military service,

  489. the draft.

  490. And so I've taken

  491. this illustration

  492. and I've adapted it

  493. to be about yours truly.

  494. When I turned 18,

  495. as a man

  496. in the United States,

  497. I had to register

  498. for selective service

  499. so that the military

  500. would know who I was

  501. if they ever wanted

  502. to have a draft.

  503. Now that hasn't

  504. happened for me,

  505. but I want you to imagine

  506. for a second

  507. that our neighbors

  508. to the north,

  509. our great Canadian friends,

  510. decide they're going

  511. to have a military draft.

  512. They're calling up names

  513. and the name

  514. Matthew Capone

  515. pops up.

  516. Matthew is called

  517. to fight

  518. for the Canadian military.

  519. And so Canada

  520. calls me up,

  521. and they say,

  522. guess what?

  523. You showed up

  524. in the draft.

  525. This is your date

  526. to show up

  527. and serve in the military.

  528. You're going to help us

  529. fight our war

  530. against whomever.

  531. What am I going to do

  532. in that moment?

  533. Do I shake in my boots?

  534. Oh no,

  535. I have to go to war

  536. for Canada.

  537. No,

  538. I'm going to laugh

  539. in their face.

  540. And why would I laugh

  541. in their face?

  542. I'm not a Canadian citizen.

  543. You have no,

  544. what?

  545. You have no power

  546. over me.

  547. Point is this.

  548. Sin

  549. is going to call you up

  550. as a Christian.

  551. Hey,

  552. you know what would be

  553. a great idea?

  554. I think you,

  555. I think you should flirt

  556. with someone

  557. who isn't your spouse.

  558. Actually,

  559. I'm going to command you

  560. to do that.

  561. I'm sin.

  562. I'm going to speak to you.

  563. What do you do?

  564. You laugh.

  565. That's really silly.

  566. Why would I do that?

  567. I'm not a citizen of sin.

  568. That doesn't make any sense.

  569. That actually sounds

  570. kind of miserable.

  571. That sounds like slavery.

  572. Sin calls you up.

  573. Hey,

  574. I have a great idea for you.

  575. I want you to rehearse

  576. all the ways

  577. you've been hurt.

  578. Whatever grudges you have,

  579. I really want you

  580. nursing those.

  581. Actually,

  582. I don't just want you

  583. doing that.

  584. I command you to do that.

  585. What are you going to say?

  586. You're going to laugh.

  587. I'm not a citizen of sin.

  588. I don't have to do

  589. what you tell me to do.

  590. That actually sounds

  591. kind of miserable.

  592. That sounds like slavery.

  593. If you're falsely accused,

  594. sin's going to come to you

  595. and say,

  596. you know what?

  597. Punch them back.

  598. They hurt you.

  599. You hurt them.

  600. What are you going to say?

  601. You're going to laugh.

  602. You're going to say,

  603. I'm actually a child of God.

  604. And you know what God says

  605. to his children?

  606. He says he's going to defend them.

  607. He's going to vindicate them.

  608. I'm not going to worry

  609. that someone's falsely accused me.

  610. I know that God

  611. is the bringer of justice.

  612. I don't need to punch back.

  613. I'm what?

  614. I'm free.

  615. I'm free.

  616. Not a citizen to sin.

  617. Of course,

  618. it's easier said

  619. than done.

  620. Which is the point

  621. of verse 11.

  622. Paul has to remind us

  623. to do it.

  624. Paul is saying,

  625. look,

  626. think in this way.

  627. Remind yourself

  628. of what's true.

  629. The Christian life,

  630. one way of thinking about it,

  631. it is a battle

  632. to remember

  633. who you actually are.

  634. It's a battle

  635. to remember

  636. that you are in Christ,

  637. not in Adam.

  638. It is a battle

  639. to remember

  640. you are no longer

  641. under the reign of sin.

  642. It has no power

  643. or authority over you.

  644. You have died to sin.

  645. You are no longer in Adam.

  646. You have been set free.

  647. I don't care

  648. what sin says.

  649. Sin calling me up

  650. and telling me

  651. what to do

  652. is as silly

  653. as Canada

  654. trying to draft

  655. Matthew Capone

  656. to their military.

  657. I'm not part

  658. of that reign.

  659. I'm not part

  660. of that rule.

  661. By the way,

  662. and this is stretching

  663. back to last week,

  664. how do I know

  665. I am now in Christ?

  666. I've been baptized.

  667. Yeah, what sin?

  668. When sin comes to you,

  669. you remind it.

  670. Actually, that's silly.

  671. I've been baptized.

  672. I died when Christ died.

  673. When he rose,

  674. I was given life.

  675. Now what I'm about

  676. to tell you

  677. is going to sound

  678. a little weird.

  679. It's going to sound weird

  680. because it is,

  681. but it's also brilliant.

  682. I have a friend.

  683. She's a member

  684. of Generation Z,

  685. and she has trained

  686. ChatGPT

  687. to remind her

  688. of truths from Romans.

  689. So one time I said,

  690. okay, I want to watch you do this.

  691. Show me what you do.

  692. So she opened up ChatGPT.

  693. She's trained it.

  694. She said, hey,

  695. ChatGPT,

  696. I'm having a really bad day.

  697. I really need you

  698. to help me get back on track

  699. and remember what's true.

  700. And ChatGPT said,

  701. remember,

  702. you have actually died to sin.

  703. You are no longer

  704. a slave to righteousness.

  705. You actually belong to Christ.

  706. Sin has no power over you.

  707. And that, my friends,

  708. is a modern solution

  709. to an ancient problem.

  710. She, in a sense,

  711. is working to live out

  712. verse 11.

  713. She's reckoning herself

  714. dead to sin

  715. and alive to Christ Jesus.

  716. That is what this passage

  717. is telling us.

  718. We return again and again.

  719. We remind ourselves

  720. over and over

  721. of what is true

  722. and not just reminding ourselves,

  723. reminding each other.

  724. You may still feel like a slave.

  725. You may still act like a slave

  726. at times,

  727. but you are a slave no more.

  728. You are free.

  729. So act like it.

  730. Behave like it.

  731. Now, I don't mean

  732. to oversimplify this.

  733. There are other pieces

  734. to consider

  735. in our battle against sin.

  736. It certainly is more

  737. than this, right?

  738. But it is not less

  739. than this.

  740. And this is the place

  741. that Paul leans in

  742. in this passage.

  743. In this passage,

  744. as we think about

  745. what all of the Bible

  746. teaches about fighting sin,

  747. Paul says,

  748. this is one

  749. of the tools

  750. in your belt.

  751. Remember what is true.

  752. Reckon yourself.

  753. Consider yourself

  754. dead to sin

  755. and alive to God

  756. in Christ Jesus.

  757. Finally, Paul reminds us

  758. it's not just that

  759. we're free now.

  760. He also goes out of his way

  761. to tell us

  762. we will always be free.

  763. There's, in fact,

  764. no chance

  765. of going back

  766. into slavery.

  767. That's the point

  768. of verses 9,

  769. and 10.

  770. Verses 9 and 10,

  771. he's saying one thing,

  772. essentially.

  773. Look,

  774. it's a done deal.

  775. You actually can't

  776. unresurrect Jesus.

  777. And if you can't

  778. unresurrect Jesus,

  779. you can't be a slave

  780. to sin anymore.

  781. Jesus has risen,

  782. verse 10,

  783. once for all.

  784. It's done.

  785. There's no threat

  786. of Jesus being pulled

  787. back into the tomb.

  788. Verse 9,

  789. never die again.

  790. Okay,

  791. it can't be clear.

  792. You are free

  793. from sin forever

  794. because Jesus rose

  795. from the dead

  796. forever.

  797. You're free

  798. from sin forever

  799. because Jesus rose

  800. from the dead

  801. forever.

  802. Jesus is not

  803. going back

  804. in the tomb,

  805. so you can't go back

  806. into slavery

  807. to sin.

  808. It's done.

  809. The deal's sealed.

  810. return windows over.

  811. Of course,

  812. what Paul teaches us,

  813. Jesus taught

  814. first.

  815. Jesus tells us this

  816. in John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  817. if you love me,

  818. you will keep

  819. my commandments.

  820. how do we live

  821. the resurrection

  822. life?

  823. How do we walk

  824. in the newness

  825. of life

  826. that Paul talked

  827. about last week?

  828. We live it

  829. remembering

  830. that we

  831. are children

  832. of God.

  833. We're no longer

  834. slaves.

  835. We are free

  836. to obey.

  837. So you also

  838. must consider

  839. yourselves

  840. dead to sin

  841. and alive

  842. to God

  843. in Christ

  844. Jesus.

  845. May the mind

  846. of Christ

  847. my Savior

  848. live in me

  849. from day to day

  850. by his love

  851. and power

  852. controlling

  853. all I do

  854. and say.

  855. let's pray.

  856. Our Father

  857. in heaven,

  858. we praise

  859. you

  860. and thank

  861. you

  862. that you

  863. always

  864. empower

  865. what you

  866. command.

  867. You bid us

  868. fly,

  869. but you also

  870. give us

  871. wings.

  872. You've given

  873. us freedom

  874. through the power

  875. of your Holy

  876. Spirit and the

  877. resurrection

  878. of our Lord

  879. Jesus,

  880. and we ask

  881. that you

  882. would remind

  883. us,

  884. especially this

  885. morning,

  886. that that is

  887. true and

  888. that we would

  889. live into it

  890. as we follow

  891. you.

  892. We ask

  893. all of these

  894. things in

  895. Jesus' name.

  896. Amen.
