  1. I didn't get a chance to do a sound check before so I was running around. We're all good.

  2. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm one of the pastors here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  3. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. And we're continuing this morning our series in the book of Romans.

  5. And if you've been with us you'll remember that this book is a letter written by the Apostle Paul.

  6. In the 50s AD and it is called Romans for a simple reason which is that it is written to the churches in the city of Rome.

  7. And it is about the gospel. It's about the good news of Jesus, death, and resurrection.

  8. I've mentioned this to you before and I'll mention it to you again and I'll mention it to you later.

  9. Page 7 of your worship guide, the quote I keep coming back to, that Paul's letter to the Romans is arguably the single most important piece of literature.

  10. In the history of the world.

  11. A modest claim.

  12. I keep reminding you all of that because there is a sense in which Romans is kind of hard.

  13. And maybe you've noticed that as we've dug into it.

  14. There's times when Paul repeats himself and you're trying to figure out, okay, what's new? What's old?

  15. The good news in all of that though is that Romans may be hard but it is also great.

  16. Romans may be hard but it is also worth it.

  17. And as we may have the temptation to get lost a little bit in Paul's arguments,

  18. I want to make sure that you know exactly where we're at as we start this morning.

  19. So we are in Romans chapter 6 and Romans chapter 6 asks one and only one question.

Romans 6 chapter mention Romans 6 chapter mention

  20. If God's grace is real, we might say since God's grace is real, why do I still have to obey?

  21. Since God's grace is real, why does it matter what I do?

  22. If Jesus lived the perfect life that I should have lived if he took the punishment for my sins,

  23. why can't I do whatever I want?

  24. That would seem to be maybe the conclusion of that.

  25. Okay, so that's the question of chapter 6.

  26. To that one question, Paul has at least three answers.

  27. And that's what we have been working through the last number of weeks, okay?

  28. Answer 1.

  29. This is what we looked at verses 1 through 14.

  30. It doesn't make sense to continue in sin because you can't be both dead and alive at the same time.

  31. You're alive because of your union with Christ, that what's true of Christ is true of you.

  32. When Christ died in his death, you died to the power of sin.

  33. In Christ's resurrection, you experience newness of life, life empowered by the Holy Spirit.

  34. So that's answer 1.

  35. Answer 2 is our answer for today.

  36. It doesn't make sense to continue in sin.

  37. Why would a freed slave go back to his master?

  38. Slavery is already introduced.

  39. We looked at it in verse 6, which was two weeks ago, so we've talked about it some.

  40. And then next week, we're going to see the third argument.

  41. It doesn't make sense.

  42. Why would you do something that kills you?

  43. And we'll see some of that this week as well in verse 16.

  44. So the three answers again are this.

  45. Answer 1, we don't continue in sin because of our union with Christ.

  46. Answer 2, we don't continue in sin because we're no longer a slave to sin.

  47. Answer 3, sin leads to death.

  48. Why would you do something that kills you?

  49. So the question of this passage, this passage this morning, again, is this.

  50. Why would I?

  51. Why should I obey?

  52. So with that, I invite you to join me in reading Romans chapter 6.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  53. We are going to start at verse 15 and go to verse 19.

  54. You can turn in your Bible.

  55. You can turn in your worship guide to page 7.

  56. Wherever you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  57. Jeremiah chapter 23 tells us that God's word is like a hammer that breaks a rock into pieces.

    Jeremiah 23 chapter mention

  58. Which is to say, there is nothing so powerful that it can stand in the way of God's word.

  59. So that's why we read now Romans chapter 6, starting at verse 15.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  60. What then?

  61. Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace?

  62. By no means.

  63. Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey?

  64. Either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness.

  65. But thanks be to God that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed.

  66. And having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness.

  67. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations.

  68. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, leading to more lawlessness.

  69. So now present your members as slaves to righteousness, leading to sanctification.

  70. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  71. Our Father in heaven, we do thank you again for your word, which is good and right and true.

  72. It's more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  73. Sweeter than honey.

  74. Even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  75. We ask that you would make it precious and sweet to us this morning.

  76. That you would use it to show us your mercy and your grace once again.

  77. That we'd be reminded of the great love that you have for us in Jesus Christ.

  78. The freedom that comes to us in the gospel.

  79. Most of all, we ask that you would show us Jesus.

  80. We'd see his glory and his beauty and his power.

  81. His mercy, his grace, his love.

  82. We ask all of these things in his name.

  83. Amen.

  84. I have mentioned to you before, there's a great principle in life, which is this.

  85. If you are starting learning a new topic and you want a great introduction,

  86. one of the best things you can do is find a children's book.

  87. And it's one of the best things you can do because children's books, by definition,

  88. are meant to be simple and clear and basic.

  89. And so you're trying to get at what is the kernel of truth here?

  90. What is the main thing?

  91. You want to master the basics before you move on to the things that are advanced.

  92. If you don't master the basics, the advanced will not make sense.

  93. It turns out there is actually a children's book on the book of Romans.

  94. It's called The Sword by a man named Marty Mikowski.

  95. I brought it with me.

  96. You can see there's two little Roman soldiers on the front.

  97. It is for ages 8 through 12.

  98. Now, I have to confess, it's been a couple years since I was ages 8 through 12.

  99. But I enjoy it nonetheless.

  100. And in illustrating Romans chapter 6, Marty does it this way.

    Romans 6 chapter mention

  101. It says, imagine that there's a paintbrush.

  102. All of us know what a paintbrush is, right?

  103. Paintbrush is just an instrument.

  104. So if you put the paintbrush in the hands of a master artist, what's going to happen?

  105. You're going to get a masterpiece.

  106. And then he says, but what if you take that paintbrush and you put it in the hands of a toddler?

  107. What will you get?

  108. He says, well, you will likely get a mess on the wall.

  109. Same paintbrush.

  110. Two different people holding it.

  111. And he says this.

  112. This is on the back of your worship guide.

  113. When we walk through life with God as our master, he can use us to create unmatched beauty.

  114. On the contrary, if we allow sin to rule our lives, we can be in a terrible mess.

  115. Paul wants us to consider these questions.

  116. Who is controlling your life?

  117. Who is your master?

  118. And that's one of the major questions here of chapter six.

  119. Who will hold the paintbrush of your life?

  120. If you give it to God and you obey God, he will take your life and he will make it a masterpiece.

  121. If you give it to sin and you obey sin, sin will take your life and there will be a mess.

  122. That actually helps us understand not just this week, but also last week.

  123. You'll remember Andy last week discussed verse 13 of chapter six, which says this.

  124. Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness,

  125. but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life

  126. and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  127. You could just take the word paintbrush, replace instrument.

  128. Do not present your paintbrush as a paintbrush for unrighteousness,

  129. but present yourself as a paintbrush to God for righteousness.

  130. Then this week it helps us understand verse 16.

  131. Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves,

  132. you are slaves of the one whom you obey,

  133. either of sin, which leads to death,

  134. or of obedience, which leads to righteousness.

  135. So Paul's telling us there's another principle here.

  136. Whoever holds your paintbrush,

  137. that is your master.

  138. If you obey someone,

  139. you are their slave.

  140. There's another truth here,

  141. which is this.

  142. You will have a master.

  143. You will serve someone.

  144. Freedom from religion

  145. will not make you free.

  146. You will serve either sin or God.

  147. There is, in fact,

  148. no independent freedom in this world.

  149. That is a fiction.

  150. There are only two slaveries.

  151. There's only two ways to live.

  152. There's a way to live that leads to death.

  153. And there's a way to live that leads to life.

  154. Some of you may remember

  155. Bob Dylan's song from 1979

  156. called,

  157. You Gotta Serve Somebody.

  158. He says this,

  159. You may be an ambassador

  160. to England or France.

  161. You may like to gamble.

  162. You may like to dance.

  163. You may be the heavyweight champion of the world.

  164. You may be a socialite

  165. with a long string of pearls.

  166. But you're going to have to serve somebody.

  167. It may be the devil.

  168. Or it may be the Lord.

  169. But you're going to have to serve

  170. somebody.

  171. What Paul's telling us here

  172. is whatever you serve,

  173. it will rule you.

  174. If you serve money,

  175. you will be a slave to it.

  176. It will consume your thoughts

  177. and your time,

  178. and your mind will not rest.

  179. You won't be able

  180. to not check the stock market.

  181. If you serve pleasure

  182. and comfort,

  183. it will rule you.

  184. And one day,

  185. someday in the future,

  186. you will be very,

  187. very uncomfortable.

  188. If you serve accomplishments,

  189. you will find

  190. that there is never an end

  191. and that it's never enough.

  192. There is always something more,

  193. and there will always be

  194. someone who is stronger

  195. and smarter

  196. and faster

  197. than you.

  198. If you serve approval,

  199. you will always do

  200. what other people want

  201. and not what is right.

  202. You'll be a slave.

  203. If you serve independence,

  204. if that is more important to you

  205. than anything else,

  206. you may experience

  207. a cruel joke.

  208. You will get it.

  209. You also won't have

  210. the deep connection

  211. that makes life worth living.

  212. Actually,

  213. it might be better

  214. to be a slave.

  215. Slaves actually have

  216. friendships sometimes.

  217. If you make

  218. those things

  219. or anything

  220. your God,

  221. you will serve it.

  222. it will be your master.

  223. You will be

  224. its slave.

  225. Why not just sin

  226. all the more?

  227. For under law

  228. and not under grace,

  229. why not sin

  230. whenever we want?

  231. Paul tells us this,

  232. because it's miserable.

  233. Because it's slavery.

  234. Because those masters

  235. are hard

  236. and cruel.

  237. Now,

  238. you may be wondering,

  239. okay,

  240. we talked about slavery

  241. two weeks ago.

  242. What's the difference

  243. between Paul's point

  244. about slavery then

  245. and his point now?

  246. His point two weeks ago

  247. in verses 5 through 11

  248. was this,

  249. you don't have to obey

  250. sin anymore

  251. because you're not

  252. enslaved to it.

  253. Okay,

  254. that's verse 6.

  255. You don't have to obey

  256. sin anymore

  257. because you're not

  258. enslaved to it.

  259. This week,

  260. verses 15 through 19,

  261. he's saying this,

  262. but if you do

  263. obey it,

  264. you are bound

  265. to it.

  266. if you do

  267. obey it,

  268. it will enslave you.

  269. That's what he's saying

  270. in verse 16.

  271. Do you not know

  272. that if you present

  273. yourselves to anyone

  274. as obedient slaves,

  275. you are slaves

  276. of the one

  277. whom you obey,

  278. either of sin,

  279. which leads to death,

  280. or of obedience,

  281. which leads

  282. to righteousness.

  283. Now,

  284. how did we,

  285. how did we get here?

  286. We're picking up

  287. from last week.

  288. You'll remember

  289. last week ended

  290. with verse 14,

  291. which says this,

  292. for sin will have

  293. no dominion over you

  294. since you are not

  295. under law,

  296. but under grace.

  297. Paul then repeats

  298. that in verse 15,

  299. and so basically

  300. what he's saying,

  301. what he's reminding us

  302. of is this,

  303. there are two ways

  304. to get to heaven.

  305. You can get to heaven

  306. under law,

  307. or you can get to heaven

  308. under grace.

  309. If you're under law

  310. and you want to get to heaven,

  311. you must perfectly

  312. obey every single one

  313. of God's commands,

  314. and never sin.

  315. Now,

  316. if you've been with us,

  317. you know that's not an option.

  318. Romans chapter 3

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  319. says this,

  320. for all have sinned

  321. and fall short

  322. of the glory of God.

  323. So being under law,

  324. bad deal.

  325. If you are under grace,

  326. that means you trust

  327. in Christ.

  328. Believe he died

  329. the death

  330. that you deserve.

  331. He lived the perfect life

  332. that you did not.

  333. And that's good.

  334. Because you actually

  335. cannot earn heaven

  336. from the law.

  337. You can't,

  338. and you won't.

  339. You're no longer justified

  340. by your obedience.

  341. You are justified

  342. by Christ's obedience.

  343. And so that's the distinction,

  344. that distinction

  345. from verses 14 and 15

  346. that leads to the question

  347. of verse 15,

  348. which now we've already answered.

  349. The good news

  350. is now you're actually free

  351. to obey God.

  352. Not just that you've been freed

  353. from the slavery to sin,

  354. you actually have

  355. kind of a new slavery here.

  356. You're actually free

  357. to follow God

  358. as your true and real master.

  359. That's what Paul's saying

  360. in verses 17 and 18.

  361. But thanks be to God

  362. that you who were once

  363. slaves of sin

  364. have become obedient

  365. from the heart

  366. to the standard of teaching

  367. to which you were committed.

  368. And having been set free

  369. from sin,

  370. have become slaves

  371. of righteousness.

  372. Obedient from the heart,

  373. that phrase there

  374. gets to what we talked about

  375. at the beginning

  376. of chapter 6.

  377. That the very power center

  378. of your heart

  379. has changed.

  380. We discussed this

  381. when we talked about

  382. the three different ways

  383. of talking about sin.

  384. The power,

  385. the presence,

  386. and the penalty.

  387. And you remember

  388. that when Christ died,

  389. if you're a Christian,

  390. you died to the power

  391. of sin.

  392. You don't have to obey

  393. sin anymore.

  394. sin no longer controls

  395. your heart.

  396. And so that's why

  397. in verse 4

  398. we talked about

  399. newness of life.

  400. Life that is characterized

  401. by resurrection power.

  402. As I've mentioned to you

  403. many times now,

  404. Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  405. tells us

  406. the same power

  407. that raised Jesus Christ

  408. from the dead

  409. is at work in you.

  410. That's the newness of life.

  411. That's what allows us

  412. to obey

  413. from the heart.

  414. In other words,

  415. serving God

  416. sets you free

  417. to do the right thing

  418. for the right reason.

  419. Serving God

  420. sets you free

  421. to do the right thing

  422. for the right reason.

  423. You raise your children now

  424. and you love them

  425. not so that they can

  426. make you look good

  427. or so they can prove

  428. something about you.

  429. That's its own type

  430. of slavery.

  431. But so that they can

  432. go out

  433. and spread

  434. God's glory

  435. even more.

  436. You can make money

  437. for God's purposes.

  438. To provide

  439. for yourself

  440. and your family

  441. and to show

  442. the same generosity

  443. that God has shown

  444. to you.

  445. You can demonstrate

  446. sexual integrity

  447. in your life

  448. because you love

  449. from your heart

  450. God's gift

  451. of marriage.

  452. And you want to

  453. use your body

  454. to bless

  455. other people

  456. rather than

  457. to destroy

  458. and use them.

  459. and when you

  460. experience

  461. success

  462. which I hope

  463. that you do

  464. you can give

  465. glory to God

  466. and you can

  467. actually enjoy it

  468. because you have

  469. the right

  470. perspective.

  471. Brothers and sisters

  472. that's what real

  473. freedom

  474. looks like

  475. feels like

  476. tastes like.

  477. Remember I've

  478. told you this

  479. old quote

  480. from David Gibson

  481. in the created

  482. world

  483. you can only

  484. truly enjoy

  485. what you do

  486. not worship.

  487. In the created

  488. world

  489. you can only

  490. truly enjoy

  491. what you do

  492. not worship

  493. because if you

  494. worship it

  495. it will rule

  496. you.

  497. If you

  498. worship it

  499. it will be

  500. your master

  501. and you

  502. will be

  503. its slave.

  504. I've told you

  505. before and I'll

  506. tell you again

  507. Romans is the

  508. fifth gospel

  509. and Romans is

  510. called the fifth

  511. gospel

  512. because what

  513. Paul teaches

  514. Jesus

  515. taught

  516. first.

  517. Jesus is

  518. talking to the

  519. Jewish leaders

  520. in John

    John 8 chapter mention

  521. chapter 8

  522. and he says

  523. this

  524. truly truly

  525. I say to

  526. you

  527. everyone who

  528. practices sin

  529. is a slave

  530. to sin.

  531. The slave

  532. does not

  533. remain in the

  534. house forever

  535. the son

  536. remains

  537. forever.

  538. so if the

  539. son sets

  540. you free

  541. you are

  542. free

  543. indeed.

  544. A few

  545. verses earlier

  546. he says

  547. this

  548. also John

    John 8 chapter mention

  549. chapter 8

  550. if you

  551. abide in

  552. my word

  553. you are

  554. truly my

  555. disciples

  556. and you

  557. will know

  558. the truth

  559. and the

  560. truth

  561. will set

  562. you

  563. free.

  564. Man I

  565. wonder where

  566. Paul got

  567. this idea

  568. of slavery.

  569. I think

  570. he got it

  571. from Jesus.

  572. I think

  573. he knows

  574. that Jesus

  575. sets us

  576. free from

  577. slavery to

  578. sin by

  579. his death

  580. and his

  581. resurrection.

  582. That's what

  583. Paul's been

  584. saying over

  585. and over

  586. again in

  587. this chapter

  588. when Jesus

  589. died

  590. you

  591. died.

  592. Now that

  593. does raise

  594. a question

  595. for us.

  596. How can

  597. we say

  598. that Jesus

  599. sets us

  600. free

  601. if we're

  602. a slave

  603. to him?

  604. That doesn't

  605. sound like

  606. freedom.

  607. That sounds

  608. kind of

  609. odd that

  610. Paul's

  611. using

  612. different

  613. words

  614. than

  615. Jesus

  616. is.

  617. Well Paul

  618. I think

  619. is getting

  620. at this

  621. in verse

  622. 19.

  623. he says

  624. I'm speaking

  625. in human

  626. terms

  627. because of

  628. your

  629. natural

  630. limitations.

  631. What Paul's

  632. saying is

  633. this.

  634. Hey I

  635. realize this

  636. may strike

  637. you as a

  638. little bit

  639. odd to

  640. talk about

  641. being God's

  642. slave.

  643. I'm just

  644. trying to

  645. use an

  646. illustration

  647. that you

  648. can understand.

  649. It may

  650. be imperfect

  651. but it

  652. is true.

  653. Following

  654. Jesus

  655. is the

  656. only

  657. way

  658. to

  659. life

  660. and

  661. freedom.

  662. If

  663. the

  664. son

  665. sets

  666. you

  667. free

  668. you

  669. will

  670. be

  671. free

  672. indeed.

  673. We

  674. might

  675. put it

  676. this

  677. way

  678. to

  679. our

  680. God

  681. be

  682. the

  683. glory

  684. to

  685. our

  686. God

  687. be

  688. the

  689. praise

  690. he

  691. alone

  692. the

  693. name

  694. above

  695. all

  696. names.

  697. I

  698. will

  699. boast

  700. ever

  701. only

  702. in the

  703. Lord

  704. my

  705. God

  706. for

  707. I

  708. know

  709. his

  710. glory

  711. is

  712. my

  713. good.

  714. Serving

  715. him

  716. is

  717. real

  718. and

  719. true

  720. freedom.

  721. let's

  722. pray.

  723. Our

  724. father

  725. in

  726. heaven

  727. we

  728. do

  729. thank

  730. you

  731. that

  732. you

  733. set

  734. us

  735. free

  736. from

  737. the

  738. slavery

  739. to

  740. sin.

  741. Set

  742. us

  743. free

  744. to

  745. actually

  746. enjoy

  747. what

  748. you've

  749. given

  750. us

  751. in

  752. this

  753. world

  754. because

  755. we

  756. worship

  757. you

  758. above

  759. everything

  760. else.

  761. We

  762. ask

  763. that

  764. that

  765. would

  766. be

  767. true

  768. of

  769. us

  770. that

  771. you

  772. would

  773. continue

  774. to

  775. grow

  776. and

  777. shape

  778. and

  779. form

  780. our

  781. hearts

  782. that

  783. we

  784. would

  785. love

  786. your

  787. freedom

  788. we

  789. would

  790. run

  791. away

  792. from

  793. the

  794. slavery

  795. of

  796. sin.

  797. We

  798. ask

  799. these

  800. things

  801. in

  802. Jesus

  803. name.

  804. Amen.
