  1. My name is Randon Schleiden. I am an ordained teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church of America, the same denomination as this church body.

  2. I'm currently serving as a chaplain in the United States Army here at Fort Carson, and I have the privilege of opening God's word with you today.

  3. And if you would please turn in your Bibles to Mark chapter 10, and we'll be reading from verse 35 to 45. Mark chapter 10, verses 35 to 45.

Mark 10 chapter mention Mark 10:35–45

  4. As I see that most of you are there, have found it in your bulletins, let us first go to the Lord in prayer and ask his help for understanding this passage.

  5. Father in heaven, mighty is your name. We pray that in your strength you would build us up though we are weak.

  6. We pray that in your word and through your word you would do the work which you promise it will do, which is to rebuke us and correct us,

  7. to reform us, to improve us, to train us in righteousness, that we would be prepared for every good work, maturing Christ.

  8. Father, we pray that what we aren't yet, you would continue to make us through the sanctification of your word and the life that you take us through.

  9. We pray you do this work by the power of your spirit in Christ's name. Amen.

  10. If you would, please follow along as I read from Mark chapter 10, verses 35 to 45.

    Mark 10:35–45

  11. And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to Jesus and said to him,

  12. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.

  13. And he said to them, What do you want me to do for you?

  14. And they said to him, Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left in your glory.

  15. Jesus said to them, You do not know what you are asking.

  16. Are you able to drink the cup that I drink or to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?

  17. And they said to him, We are able.

  18. And Jesus said to them, The cup that I drink, you will drink.

  19. And with the baptism with which I am baptized, you will be baptized.

  20. But to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant,

  21. but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.

  22. And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John.

  23. And Jesus called them all to him and said to them,

  24. You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them,

  25. and their great ones exercise authority over them.

  26. But it shall not be so among you.

  27. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,

  28. and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.

  29. For even the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve,

  30. and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  31. As you look at this passage, I want you to recall another scripture that says in John 9,

  32. We must work the works of him who sent us while it is day.

  33. For night is coming when no one can work.

  34. And we know that God has prepared good works beforehand,

  35. before we even came about, that we would walk in them.

  36. And so what I want to challenge you with is that there is work ahead for us to do as Christians,

  37. as disciples of Christ.

  38. And as we look towards that calling which God has called us,

  39. we see in this passage, we are called to bear out those good works,

  40. to walk in them which Christ has called us to,

  41. by serving others.

  42. And so in this passage, I would argue that at least one of the main ideas

  43. that Christ means for us to take away from his word,

  44. is that Christians serve.

  45. Christians serve.

  46. And you may think, okay, yeah, I know Christians in the church are supposed to serve.

  47. I think this passage tells us, at least in three ways, how we are to serve,

  48. or with what mind.

  49. Christians serve, first of all, because Christ first served us.

  50. Christians serve because Christ first served us.

  51. Second, I want you to see that Christians serve in the face of trials.

  52. Christians serve others in the face of trials.

  53. And third, this passage tells us that Christians serve for a reward

  54. that's prepared in advance according to the purposes of God.

  55. Now, as we look at this passage, in this assembly, in this congregation, this flock,

  56. I know that you all have been in Romans, and you've been running through Romans.

  57. And then the Advent season came.

  58. And so you've likely also been focusing on the Advent season,

  59. the nativity scene, the birth of Christ,

  60. the second person of the Trinity taking flesh to himself.

  61. And then here I am coming to preach a sermon from the book of Mark.

  62. So let me tell you a little bit about where we are in this passage.

  63. You see, in Mark chapter 1, we find immediately that Mark is a fast-paced gospel

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  64. where Jesus is on mission, doing the work that God called him to do.

  65. And in all the gospel accounts, essentially, there's kind of a three-phase breakdown.

  66. The first phase is Jesus' Galilean or countryside ministry.

  67. He ministers the gospel and the truth of who he is

  68. and what he's about to do in the countryside.

  69. And then you have Jesus' journey to Jerusalem, phase 2,

  70. where Jesus is en route to Jerusalem, where he will complete phase 3,

  71. which is going to the cross, dying, raising, ascending on high.

  72. Where we are in this passage in chapter 10 is right at the end of phase 2.

  73. Jesus is completing his journey or road to Jerusalem.

  74. He is right on the cusp or right at the gates of entering the city.

  75. Now, closer to our passage of this morning, in Mark chapter 10, verse 32,

    Mark 10:32

  76. it says the disciples were amazed at Jesus.

  77. Now, if you've read the gospel of Mark,

  78. you know that there's plenty recorded that the disciples had to be amazed about.

  79. You'd see that Jesus did miracles of healing.

  80. He healed the blind.

  81. He healed the sick.

  82. He healed lepers.

  83. He forgave sin, which only God can do.

  84. You know that Jesus exercised authority over the winds and the sea and calmed the storm,

  85. showing that he was very God of very God, author of creation.

  86. They had plenty to be amazed about.

  87. But this passage tells us, in Mark chapter 10, around verse 30,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  88. that they were amazed at Jesus' determination to fulfill the will of God.

  89. Because Jesus said, hey, when I get to this city of Jerusalem,

  90. I'm going to be put to death.

  91. I'm going to be scorched.

  92. I'm going to suffer.

  93. I'm going to bleed.

  94. I'm going to be spit on, and I'm going to die.

  95. And what they saw after Jesus shared that with them,

  96. is that he continued marching, not losing a step towards the city,

  97. where he would be put to death for the sins of many.

  98. And so Mark chapter 10 is right on the edge of that.

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  99. And so as you see these Advent candles,

  100. and remember what it means that Jesus took flesh to himself,

  101. that God was willing to go to the cross for us,

  102. that we would have life as sinners.

  103. I want you to link the reality of that truth,

  104. of what those candles represent, to this one,

  105. that Jesus was born to die, to go to a cross,

  106. to shed his blood, and have it applied to you and me by name,

  107. so that we would be counted as children of God.

  108. So with that introduction, let us go into the passage.

  109. We serve as Christians because of Christ's service,

  110. because Christ first served.

  111. Look at verse 45 of our passage.

  112. It says,

  113. The Son of Man came not to be served,

  114. but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  115. When it describes Jesus,

  116. when he describes himself as the Son of Man,

  117. that Son of Man phrase, you may know,

  118. is one of Jesus' favorite descriptions or titles for himself.

  119. It's pulled from a few places in scripture,

  120. but specifically and most often referenced to Daniel chapter 7.

    Daniel 7 chapter mention

  121. And without reading that passage,

  122. the summary is that Daniel receives a vision from the Lord,

  123. of the Messiah, the Son of Man,

  124. the promised descendant of David,

  125. the one who would take away the sin of the world,

  126. that that one is in this vision given to Daniel,

  127. receiving all authority and dominion and power from God on high,

  128. and he's being given the throne,

  129. and this majestic sight that Daniel gets to report to all of God's children.

  130. And so, when Jesus says,

  131. The Son of Man, speaking of himself,

  132. came not to be served, but to serve,

  133. he says the one who sits on the throne

  134. is also going to be the one who gets lowest beneath other people in service,

  135. to lift them up.

  136. You see, when Jesus came from on high to low,

  137. a king to be a servant to all,

  138. he left what he had always enjoyed,

  139. which was the immediate presence of the Father and the Holy Spirit

  140. from all eternity,

  141. to do the work of redemption that God had called him to.

  142. Jesus left comfort.

  143. He left the service of angels

  144. and all other eternal created beings

  145. that God had made to serve him

  146. so that he could rescue you and I.

  147. If you read passages from places like the book of Luke,

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  148. chapter 15 and elsewhere,

  149. it says that Jesus even came

  150. and left that glorious company

  151. to sit in the company of drunkards

  152. and sinners,

  153. tax collectors

  154. and cheats

  155. and prostitutes.

  156. And in the presence of a military company,

  157. I would also say

  158. that if Jesus came for them,

  159. he also came

  160. for soldiers

  161. and for airmen

  162. and for sailors

  163. and Marines.

  164. But we have an issue here

  165. that we have to resolve.

  166. Jesus says

  167. he came to give his life

  168. as a ransom for many.

  169. For those of you

  170. who have read through the Psalms recently,

  171. maybe you've come across Psalm 49

  172. where it says,

  173. truly,

  174. no man can ransom another

  175. or give to God

  176. the price of his life.

  177. For the ransom of their life

  178. is costly

  179. and can never suffice.

  180. That he should live on forever

  181. and never see the pit.

  182. And then it says in verse 15,

  183. but God

  184. will ransom my soul

  185. from the power of Sheol

  186. for he will receive me.

  187. And so what Psalm 49 says

  188. is that

  189. if you're guilty of sin,

  190. which each of us are,

  191. each a sinner before God

  192. apart from Christ,

  193. we cannot pay the debt

  194. that we owe God

  195. for the sin

  196. and our offense against him.

  197. A debt that we cannot pay

  198. by any work in this world,

  199. any money in our bank account,

  200. any good that we do,

  201. any service we offer,

  202. the whole of our lives

  203. cannot purchase away

  204. the sin debt

  205. that we owe God.

  206. But then in verse 15,

  207. it says,

  208. but God can pay that debt

  209. if he so chooses for us.

  210. And when you look at this passage

  211. in verse 49,

  212. it tells us that

  213. Christ offers to do just that

  214. and he accomplishes it.

  215. But verse 45 of our passage says,

  216. the Son of Man

  217. came not to be served,

  218. but to serve

  219. and give his life

  220. as a ransom for many.

  221. And that might trigger again

  222. in your mind

  223. to go back to the Old Testament,

  224. places like Isaiah 53,

  225. not coincidentally called

  226. the servant song,

  227. referring to God's chosen servant

  228. to redeem his people.

  229. It says,

  230. out of the anguish of his soul,

  231. he shall see and be satisfied.

  232. By his knowledge

  233. shall the righteous one,

  234. my servant,

  235. make many

  236. to be accounted righteous

  237. and he shall bear their sins

  238. or bear their iniquities.

  239. Don't ever think for a moment

  240. that because God is sovereign,

  241. he has not made it his work

  242. to receive many into his presence

  243. at the command of his will.

  244. Some people think

  245. that because God is sovereign,

  246. it means that only a few

  247. will be elected to be saved.

  248. But the most that could ever

  249. be saved are saved

  250. because God is sovereign

  251. and he's chosen many

  252. to be received into his presence

  253. through the work of Christ.

  254. And so I ask you at this moment,

  255. is Christ and his service,

  256. his suffering on your behalf,

  257. the foundation and motive

  258. from which you serve other people?

  259. Is he the rock

  260. that you build

  261. your Christian service around?

  262. Or is that motive other?

  263. Is it to look good

  264. or be thought well of by others?

  265. Is it so that you could

  266. be promoted one day?

  267. Is it so that your spouse

  268. will thank you

  269. because you thank them?

  270. Or is it because Christ

  271. suffered for you

  272. and so you would

  273. willingly suffer for others?

  274. Maybe in application

  275. it looks like this.

  276. Maybe you're a spouse

  277. or maybe you're a wife

  278. who willingly sacrifices

  279. a career that you could have

  280. in service to your family.

  281. Or maybe you're a teenager

  282. who willingly drives

  283. your younger siblings

  284. to music lessons.

  285. Or maybe you're simply

  286. a politician

  287. who still willingly prays

  288. in the name of Christ

  289. because you know

  290. he deserves honor and glory

  291. in the office

  292. he has appointed you to.

  293. Now look at verses 43 and 44.

  294. It says,

  295. those that would be great,

  296. here's Jesus' lesson

  297. to the disciples.

  298. Let me back up for a moment.

  299. James and John

  300. make their requests

  301. and they say,

  302. hey Jesus,

  303. we know you're going

  304. to be in power.

  305. They haven't comprehended

  306. what type of power.

  307. They don't really understand

  308. what Jesus' kingdom

  309. is going to be just yet.

  310. But they know

  311. he's going to have a throne.

  312. They know he's going

  313. to be in power.

  314. So they make their request

  315. based on that understanding.

  316. And Jesus says,

  317. I'll tell you what,

  318. I've got a lesson

  319. for all of the disciples.

  320. I know this is an issue

  321. in your hearts.

  322. So he says,

  323. huddle up.

  324. And he brings in

  325. all 12 of his disciples.

  326. And this is what he says.

  327. Those that would be great

  328. among you

  329. must become your servant.

  330. And those who would be

  331. first among you

  332. must be slave of all.

  333. Here's what Jesus is saying.

  334. There is a formula

  335. for receiving glory from God.

  336. There is a formula

  337. for giving glory to God

  338. and for receiving glory from God.

  339. Jesus says,

  340. there's two formulas

  341. you can pick from.

  342. The first formula

  343. is the world's formula.

  344. which says,

  345. you lie,

  346. you cheat,

  347. you beg,

  348. you borrow,

  349. you steal,

  350. you do whatever you need to

  351. to get ahead

  352. of the person next to you.

  353. To be elevated

  354. in the eyes of the world.

  355. To pad your bank accounts.

  356. To have a bigger house.

  357. To have a greater title.

  358. To have more power

  359. and authority.

  360. That's what the world

  361. says to do.

  362. But what Jesus says is,

  363. here's my model.

  364. You suffer

  365. unto service

  366. of other people.

  367. And he says,

  368. let me walk it out

  369. in front of you.

  370. You've heard the saying,

  371. monkey see,

  372. monkey do.

  373. Jesus says,

  374. watch what I do,

  375. hear what I teach,

  376. and then follow my example.

  377. As Christians,

  378. we are called

  379. to be chiefly concerned

  380. with the glory of God.

  381. And when we're

  382. purchased in Christ,

  383. we are given the strength

  384. and the spirit

  385. to do exactly that.

  386. To glorify him

  387. with our heart

  388. and with our work

  389. and with our energy.

  390. That's why when we say

  391. the Lord's Prayer,

  392. it says,

  393. our Father in Heaven,

  394. hallowed be your name.

  395. We say that

  396. every single Sunday here.

  397. When we sing

  398. the Gloria Patri

  399. right before the sermon,

  400. we say,

  401. glory to the Father

  402. and to the Son

  403. and to the Holy Ghost.

  404. Glory, glory, glory

  405. to our triune God.

  406. And the five solas

  407. of the Reformation,

  408. one of them

  409. is

  410. sola deo gloria.

  411. Glory to God alone

  412. and Christ alone.

  413. the first catechism question,

  414. what is the chief

  415. and a man?

  416. To glorify God

  417. and to enjoy him forever.

  418. Glory to God,

  419. glory to God,

  420. glory to God.

  421. No higher privilege

  422. or calling

  423. that a Christian

  424. could be made for

  425. than that work.

  426. And God is glorified

  427. when you willingly suffer

  428. unto the blessing

  429. of other people,

  430. especially

  431. other children of God.

  432. J.C. Ryle,

  433. who was an Anglican minister,

  434. Church of England,

  435. he said this,

  436. kind of pointing

  437. at the issue

  438. of the heart

  439. of the disciples

  440. that Jesus was speaking to.

  441. He said,

  442. let all those

  443. who desire

  444. to please Christ

  445. watch and pray

  446. against self-esteem.

  447. Now, we live in a world

  448. where they tell you

  449. you need to be

  450. more confident

  451. in yourself,

  452. more courageous

  453. in your own strength,

  454. more confident

  455. in your abilities.

  456. Do more

  457. from within

  458. the strength

  459. that you can find

  460. within yourself.

  461. And here we have

  462. a renowned pastor

  463. who understood

  464. the gospel

  465. with great clarity,

  466. said,

  467. don't trust your heart,

  468. trust the strength

  469. that is found

  470. outside of you

  471. available only

  472. in Christ.

  473. In Jesus' lesson,

  474. if you think about

  475. who the disciples became,

  476. they were ministers.

  477. When I was walking

  478. through a food line

  479. parking lot

  480. in Mississippi

  481. during grad school,

  482. I bumped into a lady

  483. where the shopping carts were

  484. and she said,

  485. hey young man,

  486. thank you for this cart.

  487. And then she said,

  488. what are you here

  489. in Mississippi for?

  490. Because she heard my accent.

  491. She knew I wasn't from there

  492. and I said,

  493. oh I'm in seminary here.

  494. I'm training to be a minister.

  495. And she said,

  496. oh, a holy man.

  497. Right?

  498. And she said it

  499. with a southern twang

  500. which I can't replicate.

  501. But the implication there was

  502. if you're going to be

  503. a minister,

  504. your life needs to be

  505. above reproach

  506. because people are watching.

  507. And yet,

  508. the implication of Jesus' lesson

  509. to his disciples

  510. is that

  511. even you as ministers

  512. can be guilty

  513. of trying to climb

  514. to the top

  515. in the wrong way

  516. if you are not

  517. watching your heart

  518. and seeking God's will

  519. in Christ's order

  520. for your life.

  521. And if it's true of pastors,

  522. it can be true of anyone.

  523. Because if pastors

  524. and shepherds

  525. and elders of the flock

  526. are supposed to be

  527. the ones you look to

  528. for an example

  529. then know that

  530. if they need to be on guard,

  531. so do we all.

  532. If I was going to give you

  533. a definition of service

  534. from this passage,

  535. it might be something like

  536. suffering for the good

  537. of one another

  538. is what Christian service is.

  539. Suffering for the good

  540. of one another

  541. or for another.

  542. R.C. Sproul,

  543. another theologian

  544. that many of you

  545. know the name of,

  546. said,

  547. there is no theology

  548. of glory

  549. without a theology

  550. of suffering.

  551. That is,

  552. if you don't understand

  553. how suffering

  554. plays into serving others,

  555. you might not understand

  556. Christian service

  557. or in full yet.

  558. And so while the Bible

  559. isn't calling you

  560. to make your life miserable

  561. and even harder

  562. in suffering

  563. than God has already

  564. said it would be,

  565. the Bible does here

  566. in this passage tell you

  567. we need to willingly

  568. accept suffering

  569. as God assigns it

  570. so we can live

  571. and walk through

  572. that suffering

  573. relying on Christ's strength

  574. to his glory

  575. while blessing others.

  576. And so that makes me

  577. think of that song,

  578. Just a Closer Walk

  579. with Thee.

  580. The passage says,

  581. Through this world

  582. of toils and snares,

  583. if I falter,

  584. Lord who cares?

  585. Who with me

  586. my burden shares?

  587. None but Thee,

  588. Lord,

  589. none but Thee.

  590. Or maybe if you're

  591. a little younger

  592. in this passage,

  593. you know the children's rhyme

  594. or song that goes,

  595. we're going on a bear hunt?

  596. When it comes to

  597. Christian suffering,

  598. it's kind of like that song

  599. where it says,

  600. we're going through suffering,

  601. we can't go over it,

  602. we can't go under it,

  603. we're just going to have

  604. to go through it.

  605. And so that's our first

  606. and majority

  607. of our sermon points

  608. this morning,

  609. but I would tell you

  610. here's our second point.

  611. Christians serve

  612. because Christ first served,

  613. but second,

  614. Christians serve

  615. in the face of wrath

  616. and trials.

  617. Look at verse 39.

  618. Jesus asked them,

  619. he says,

  620. can you drink the cup

  621. that I drink?

  622. And they say self-confidently

  623. of self-esteem we can.

  624. He says,

  625. well let me tell you what,

  626. verse 39,

  627. the cup that I drink,

  628. you will drink.

  629. Now here's what Jesus

  630. isn't saying,

  631. he's not saying

  632. you will also die on a cross

  633. for the sins of many.

  634. Only he can do that.

  635. Only he is perfect,

  636. only he's very God

  637. of very God,

  638. only his blood

  639. is worth infinite value,

  640. valuable enough

  641. to cover the cost

  642. of the sins

  643. for the offense

  644. we have against God.

  645. But he says,

  646. if you are in me,

  647. and you receive my spirit,

  648. and you belong to God

  649. in Christ,

  650. you will suffer

  651. for my name,

  652. in my name,

  653. for the glory of God.

  654. And so Jesus kind of implies

  655. that until he drinks

  656. his cup of dine on the cross,

  657. they won't have the strength

  658. of the Holy Spirit

  659. they need in full

  660. as it's poured out

  661. at Pentecost

  662. to bear the cross,

  663. to bear the suffering

  664. that God calls

  665. each of the disciples to.

  666. And many of them

  667. were martyred.

  668. I mean,

  669. can you imagine,

  670. just stop and think

  671. for a minute,

  672. can you imagine

  673. suffering in this world

  674. as if you were a Christian,

  675. but not having the strength

  676. of the Holy Spirit

  677. to do so?

  678. Suffering,

  679. forbearing the name

  680. of a Christian,

  681. but not being a Christian,

  682. how awful that would be.

  683. And yet,

  684. Jesus says,

  685. I won't leave you

  686. without the Holy Spirit.

  687. I will drink the cup

  688. I must drink,

  689. so that when you are called

  690. to drink the cup

  691. that you're called to drink,

  692. to God's glory

  693. and in my name,

  694. you will have the strength

  695. to do so from on high.

  696. And Jesus essentially says

  697. by this thing

  698. that the cup that I drink,

  699. you will drink.

  700. Jesus says this,

  701. Christian suffering

  702. is not optional.

  703. And there aren't

  704. two types of suffering.

  705. There isn't suffering light

  706. and suffering heavy.

  707. He says there is just

  708. Christian suffering

  709. and you will suffer

  710. in the way that God

  711. has called you to

  712. and when you suffer,

  713. do so to service

  714. to others.

  715. Now,

  716. the Bible's clear.

  717. We don't get credit

  718. before the Lord

  719. for suffering

  720. for wrong that we do.

  721. For instance,

  722. if you steal a car,

  723. let's say you steal a Corvette

  724. and you drive it

  725. and you crash it

  726. and you find yourself

  727. standing before a judge

  728. and the judge says,

  729. you're going to suffer

  730. for the wrong that you've done,

  731. you're going to go to jail

  732. and you're going to pay a fine.

  733. You don't give glory to God

  734. for suffering

  735. for the wrong that you did.

  736. You are able to glorify God

  737. when you suffer injustices

  738. for righteousness sake.

  739. When you suffer injustices

  740. so that Christ

  741. will be glorified.

  742. In the book of Acts,

  743. we have a record

  744. of Paul's ministry

  745. and in Acts 14,

  746. Paul is stoned

  747. for preaching the gospel.

  748. He's in Antioch,

  749. he's in the city,

  750. he's preaching the gospel

  751. and here's what you find

  752. is that when he's preaching,

  753. they hate the truth

  754. of the gospel so much

  755. and the one who bore

  756. that message to them,

  757. loving the people

  758. by being willing

  759. to be stoned

  760. so that they would have

  761. life in the gospel,

  762. carried to them,

  763. that their ears might hear,

  764. that their heart might beat,

  765. relying upon Christ,

  766. they stone Paul.

  767. They take him out of the city

  768. and they stone him.

  769. They're so sure

  770. that he's dead

  771. that they leave him

  772. outside the city

  773. and when the disciples

  774. come to get Paul's body,

  775. they realize he's still alive

  776. and he gets up

  777. and he goes right back

  778. to preaching

  779. and he tells them

  780. that it's through

  781. many tribulations

  782. that we must enter

  783. the kingdom of God.

  784. Yet he was willing

  785. to serve anyone

  786. who would listen

  787. in Antioch

  788. even unto the point

  789. of death.

  790. Now why am I sharing

  791. this with you?

  792. Because 2025

  793. is essentially behind us.

  794. But 2026

  795. is ahead of us

  796. and there's work

  797. to be done

  798. as Christians

  799. and as a family.

  800. There is good

  801. that we can do

  802. obeying the Spirit's leading,

  803. serving others

  804. even while we

  805. willingly suffer.

  806. Are you beginning

  807. to prepare your heart

  808. to suffer

  809. unto the service

  810. of others

  811. in this body,

  812. in your immediate family,

  813. inside the church,

  814. to your neighbors,

  815. in your neighborhood?

  816. Maybe it means

  817. serving in the nursery

  818. and signing up

  819. to watch someone else's kids

  820. who may or may not

  821. be rambunctious

  822. so that other adults

  823. can attend worship together.

  824. Would you give up

  825. hearing the preached word

  826. so other people

  827. could hear it

  828. that Sunday

  829. without distraction?

  830. Would you be willing

  831. to give money

  832. to the missionaries

  833. that are on your board

  834. instead of continuing

  835. to increase

  836. your retirement account?

  837. Would you be willing

  838. to honor

  839. and applaud

  840. and pray for other people

  841. who are leaders

  842. in ministry

  843. in this church

  844. even though you thought

  845. you might have been

  846. a better fit

  847. for leading that committee

  848. that got stood up?

  849. Service creates discomfort

  850. and suffering

  851. creates discomfort.

  852. In service,

  853. you essentially

  854. give away your comfort

  855. so that others

  856. might be comfortable.

  857. You might pause

  858. and think about

  859. how you would do that

  860. in this body.

  861. Here's our last point.

  862. That in Christ,

  863. Christians serve

  864. for a reward

  865. prepared in advance

  866. according to the purposes

  867. of God.

  868. Look at verse 40.

  869. It says,

  870. To sit at my right hand

  871. or at my left

  872. is not mine to grant,

  873. but it is for those

  874. for whom it has been prepared.

  875. It is for those

  876. for whom it has been prepared.

  877. Does that mean

  878. that God already knows,

  879. has already chosen,

  880. has already appointed

  881. who would sit

  882. in higher seats

  883. of honor and glory?

  884. That's essentially

  885. what it means.

  886. It's talking about

  887. the providence of God.

  888. That God has ordered

  889. the events of history

  890. from the beginning

  891. to the end.

  892. The Westminster Shorter Catechism

  893. asks,

  894. What is the providence of God?

  895. It is his most holy,

  896. wise,

  897. and powerful,

  898. preserving and governing

  899. all his creatures

  900. and all their actions.

  901. That means that God

  902. orders your life

  903. so that you would be

  904. matured and improved

  905. for eternity.

  906. Every single thing

  907. you go through,

  908. he's not surprised.

  909. He allows it to happen.

  910. He's appointed it

  911. at the time

  912. that you are facing it

  913. so that you would

  914. turn to him

  915. and walk faithfully

  916. through it.

  917. It's kind of like

  918. how your kids go to school

  919. or how you went to school.

  920. You went to elementary school

  921. and then to middle school

  922. and then to high school

  923. and then to college

  924. or a trade school

  925. or into vocational training.

  926. Why?

  927. To be prepared

  928. for the time

  929. when you're done

  930. with school,

  931. to raise your family,

  932. to live life,

  933. to work in a job,

  934. to be prepared

  935. for that thing ahead.

  936. The suffering

  937. and the service

  938. you go through now

  939. is a schoolhouse

  940. to be trained

  941. in righteousness

  942. for eternity.

  943. So don't despise

  944. the service

  945. that God calls you to

  946. but embrace it

  947. with a grateful heart.

  948. But I might ask you this,

  949. how much suffering

  950. has God appointed you

  951. for in your life?

  952. It's a question

  953. we probably don't want

  954. the answer to

  955. because if we knew

  956. we wouldn't run

  957. and embrace that suffering

  958. that he's appointed for us.

  959. Jesus uniquely knew

  960. what suffering he would face

  961. because the scriptures

  962. are primarily written

  963. about him

  964. and so when he read

  965. the suffering servant

  966. would die on a cross

  967. and that people

  968. would gamble

  969. for his clothes

  970. whenever he was being

  971. put to death,

  972. he knew that was about him.

  973. And so he had to face

  974. those sufferings

  975. in his heart

  976. and his mind

  977. advance of when he faced

  978. them in his body.

  979. When you read

  980. about the martyrs,

  981. here's an example

  982. of what Jesus means.

  983. When he says,

  984. it's not mine to grant

  985. whether you sit

  986. at my right hand

  987. or my left hand

  988. in glory.

  989. If you were to go

  990. to Revelation 6,

  991. it says this

  992. about the martyrs.

  993. It says,

  994. John recording this,

  995. when he opened

  996. the fifth scroll,

  997. I saw under the altar

  998. the souls of those

  999. who had been slain

1000. for the word of God

  1001. and for the witness

  1002. they had borne.

  1003. They cried out

  1004. with a loud voice,

  1005. O sovereign Lord,

  1006. holy and true,

  1007. how long before

  1008. you will judge

  1009. and avenge our blood

  1010. on those who dwell

  1011. on the earth?

  1012. Then they were each

  1013. given a white robe

  1014. and told to rest

  1015. a little longer.

  1016. Until the number

  1017. of their fellow servants

  1018. and their brothers

  1019. should be complete

1020. who were to be killed

  1021. as they themselves

  1022. had been.

  1023. What this says

  1024. is that God knows

  1025. who will be slain

  1026. as martyrs,

  1027. who will be slain

  1028. in faithfulness,

  1029. who will suffer

  1030. for Christ's name.

  1031. And in this account

  1032. you see that

  1033. those faithful

  1034. who died as martyrs

  1035. bearing the testimony

  1036. of Christ's death

  1037. and resurrection

  1038. and his sufficiency,

  1039. they are surrounded

  1040. around the altar

  1041. where the scroll

  1042. is being opened

  1043. and where the throne

  1044. of Christ is.

  1045. There's not much

  1046. closer to Christ's throne

  1047. in this depiction

  1048. in Revelation

  1049. of Jesus' court,

  1050. of his throne room.

  1051. There's not much

  1052. closer to Jesus' throne

  1053. than the altar.

  1054. And the people

  1055. that are closer

  1056. to the altar

  1057. are those who died

  1058. in faithfulness

1059. in a very special way.

  1060. And so Jesus

  1061. is just saying

  1062. they were appointed

  1063. to that death

1064. that God might be glorified.

  1065. God might be glorified.

  1066. It's also important

  1067. for you to remember

  1068. that as you're called

  1069. to serve others,

  1070. even through suffering,

  1071. that what Christ

  1072. desires for you,

  1073. even in that suffering,

  1074. is greater than

  1075. what you desire

  1076. for yourself.

  1077. James and John

  1078. wanted glory for themselves.

  1079. Jesus says,

  1080. I've got something

  1081. much greater for you

1082. and it looks much different

  1083. than what you think

  1084. it'll look like.

  1085. That's why Ephesians 3,

  1086. describing what Christ

  1087. has for us,

  1088. says,

  1089. You see,

  1090. because here's part

  1091. of the reward.

1092. Jesus says in John 14,

  1093. I go to prepare

  1094. a place for you.

1095. He knows how many rooms

  1096. he needs to prepare.

  1097. Whose name is going

1098. to go on that door?

1099. Your name and your name

  1100. and your name,

1101. they're all going to go

  1102. on places Jesus

  1103. has prepared for you.

  1104. It's like a soldier

  1105. who goes to war.

  1106. He willingly fights

  1107. with more vigor

  1108. because he knows

  1109. that there may be

  1110. peace and resolution

  1111. of conflict ahead.

  1112. He fights so that

  1113. there might be peace.

  1114. And yet,

1115. a soldier is most miserable

1116. when he loses hope of peace.

  1117. Don't lose sight

  1118. of the reward

1119. that Christ has for you

  1120. even while you suffer.

1121. That there is a room

  1122. prepared for you.

  1123. Peace.

1124. I think about faithful ministers

  1125. like John MacArthur

  1126. who just passed away

  1127. this last year.

  1128. He preached

  1129. until the very end.

  1130. He was faithful

  1131. and ministering

1132. and active in the church

1133. and active in his body

1134. and active in his family

  1135. until the very end.

  1136. R.C. Sproul,

  1137. the same way.

  1138. Alistair Begg

1139. is exemplifying that as well.

  1140. They are preaching

  1141. to the end

  1142. and the only way

  1143. that they have

  1144. the strength of body

1145. and the strength of will

  1146. to continue ministering

  1147. the gospel

1148. until the day they die

  1149. is because they know

  1150. there is a reward

  1151. worth much more

  1152. than the suffering

  1153. they face.

  1154. So your reward

  1155. is the full presence

  1156. of God

  1157. in Christ,

1158. a room with your name on it,

  1159. a crown of glory,

1160. peace after a short life

  1161. of suffering

  1162. and service to others,

  1163. and fellowship

  1164. with other saints

  1165. for all eternity

  1166. who have also endured

  1167. as you have.

1168. This is why Psalm 11 says,

  1169. the Lord is righteous

1170. and he loves righteous deeds

1171. and the upright in heart

  1172. will behold his face.

1173. So as I close with this comment,

  1174. think about this.

  1175. Are you prepared

  1176. for good works?

  1177. Are you prepared

  1178. to serve others

  1179. through suffering?

  1180. Will you rely upon

  1181. the sufficiency

  1182. of Christ's work

  1183. and build upon

  1184. the foundation

  1185. of his work

  1186. and joyfully fulfill

  1187. your Christian calling

  1188. and the privilege

  1189. of the duty

  1190. that you can fulfill

  1191. in the strength

  1192. of the Spirit

  1193. this year?

  1194. Let us pray.

  1195. Father in heaven,

1196. I thank you for the glory

1197. of the work of Christ.

1198. I thank you for him coming,

  1199. taking on flesh

  1200. and being born.

1201. I thank you for his willingness,

  1202. his determination

1203. to go to the cross

1204. and to follow your will

1205. that we would be redeemed.

  1206. Sinners reconciled

  1207. to a holy God.

1208. I pray that you would

  1209. bless his work

  1210. in his name

1211. and that he would be glorified

1212. and that we would adore him more

1213. even as we serve others

  1214. in the Christian family

  1215. and in this world

  1216. through the suffering

1217. that you call us to.

1218. We pray this in Christ's name.

  1219. Amen.
