  1. It's good to be with you all this morning. My name is Jonathan. I've been with you all many times in the past, but if you're new, as Andy mentioned, I work as a college pastor here in Colorado Springs. I grew up here in Colorado Springs.

  2. And I work mostly on Colorado College and University of Colorado Springs as a Presbyterian minister with the campus ministry wing of the Presbyterian Church. It's called Reformed University Fellowship.

  3. It's always a treat to be with you. I hope you all had a happy new year. I hope you all had a happy Christmas, happy holidays.

  4. Anyways, we are, first of all, welcome to all of you, particularly if you're new. Maybe you're stumbling in here with new year resolutions to come to church and you don't know exactly why you're here.

  5. Particularly welcome to you. We're really, really glad that you're here. Coming to church can be a really intimidating thing, and we're glad you would spend your time with us.

  6. There's a lot of other things you can do on a Sunday morning, so we hope that this is a safe and welcoming place for you.

  7. Turn your Bibles to Judges chapter 19. Judges chapter 19. This is, I don't know if there's, there's no universe where this is a great sermon to start our New Year's off with.

Judges 19 chapter mention Judges 19 chapter mention

  8. One of you came up and said to me while we were getting, while we were doing our greet time, and says, you have your work cut out for you.

  9. This is a challenging passage that we are going to look at, and there's a reason why.

  10. The last time I was with you, Matthew asked me to walk through evangelism, sharing our faith, sharing the Christian faith with our friends who do not know Jesus yet as their Savior, King, Lord, Priest.

  11. And he says it was well received and asked me to continue this theme, asked me to do more of this.

  12. And so today and next week, I'll be with you again, and we'll look at this same idea again, different passage.

  13. But to continue the thread of how do we share our faith, or how is the Christian faith good news in 2026?

  14. Maybe that's the only way I can think about a New Year's sermon is how do we share our faith?

  15. The reality, here's the reality. There's two things that are happening in our world.

  16. The good news is there is a deep spiritual searching happening in this country on a level that we haven't seen since most of us have been alive.

  17. You can read pretty much any of the thought pieces, newspapers, anybody, even movies.

  18. I just watched a movie last night that was radically different from a movie that you would have made 10 years ago about how it thinks about religion and the pasture and all these.

  19. Something is happening. Something's in the air.

  20. There is a deep spiritual searching.

  21. The cows are coming home from secularism, this attempt to live our life apart from God, and it's not working.

  22. So that's the good news.

  23. The challenge is that our world, our friends, still have deep suspicion of organized religion and of the Christian faith in particular.

  24. They still are not persuaded.

  25. They still think Christianity is dangerous, is hard on minorities, is bad for our world.

  26. And so evangelism is simultaneously more necessary than it's ever been and also very challenging.

  27. And you've experienced this if you've ever tried to share your faith with someone who doesn't know Jesus yet.

  28. Family members, kids who've walked away from the Lord, neighbors, coworkers.

  29. It's just challenging.

  30. You can go back and look at the YouTube channels on what I talked about last time.

  31. We talked about this.

  32. We're going to look at it again from another angle today.

  33. And we're going to look at easily what I think is one of the most challenging passages in the Bible.

  34. It is, this is a doozy.

  35. I know that Matthew just finished preaching on the book of Judges.

  36. And we're going to look at it again, but from an angle of how do we share our faith.

  37. And if you're here today and you would say, I am not a Christian.

  38. I don't know why I'm here.

  39. I have deep questions of the Christian faith.

  40. Then in particular, I would say this is for you.

  41. I would ask you to wrestle rigorously with us as we think about what the Christian faith offers to our world.

  42. What this is is a passage that shows us that when humans do terrible things, God still intervenes to save us.

  43. That's what this passage is about.

  44. When humans do terrible things, God still intervenes to save us.

  45. I'm going to set the stage for a little bit and then we'll read it.

  46. The background of Judges is that Israel had been in a covenantal relationship with God.

  47. Israel is in a covenantal relationship with God, which is a lot like a marriage

  48. where they promised to worship and love and obey God completely in the same way that we would vow fidelity to our spouse.

  49. They would obey God.

  50. And the tragedy is they never did it.

  51. They never followed through fully on this promise.

  52. And as a matter of fact, they consistently, repeatedly run away from God and reject his rule, reject his covenant,

  53. and turn to pretty much anything else, power, money, other religions, anything else other than God.

  54. And Judges, the book of Judges is, in a sense, it's the social and spiritual critique of their failure to worship God.

  55. That's what Judges is.

  56. It's turning the mirror on them and saying this is what happens to your hearts, to your society, to your world when you don't follow God.

  57. And then the book is a slow deterioration.

  58. It's a slow, the drain coming out and showing us how bad it can get.

  59. And this is graphic, but if you are doing your dishes after, you know, a big meal,

  60. you start washing the dishes in the sink, and the top water of the dirty dishwasher is not that bad.

  61. You open up the drain, and all the bottom stuff starts circling to the bottom, right?

  62. All this gross stuff.

  63. That's what the book of Judges is, is the drain is circling, and all the bad stuff's at the bottom.

  64. And here we are at the end of this book, and it's all the bad stuff.

  65. It's the worst of the worst.

  66. And so I'm going to read this for us.

  67. I've written, I've chosen a long passage, so spare with us.

  68. And I would also warn you that this is a very hard passage.

  69. It does, I would say, this is a trigger warning.

  70. This passage does involve assault, sexual assault, and rape.

  71. And so please prepare yourself for that.

  72. If you need to step out, there's no shame, no foul in that.

  73. I'll try to deal with it as gently as I can, but I'll let you know that it's there.

  74. Okay, so this is Judges 19.

  75. This is God's word.

  76. In those days, when there was no king in Israel, a certain Levite was sojourning in the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim,

  77. who took to himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah.

  78. And his concubine was unfaithful to him, and she went away from him to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah,

  79. and was there for four months.

  80. Then her husband arose and went after her to speak kindly to her and to bring her back.

  81. He had with him his servant and a couple of donkeys, and she brought him into her father's house.

  82. And when the girl's father saw him, he came with joy to meet him.

  83. And his father-in-law, the girl's father, made him stay, and he remained with him three days.

  84. So they ate and drank and spent the night there.

  85. And on the fourth day they arose early in the morning, and he prepared to go.

  86. But the girl's father said to his son-in-law,

  87. Strengthen your heart with a morsel of bread, and after that you may go.

  88. So the two of them sat and ate and drank together.

  89. And the girl's father said to the man,

  90. Be pleased to spend the night, and let your heart be merry.

  91. And when the man rose up to go, his father-in-law pressed him till he spent the night there again.

  92. And on the fifth day he rose early in the morning to depart.

  93. And the girl's father said, Strengthen your heart and wait until the day declines.

  94. So they ate, both of them.

  95. And when the man and his concubine and his servant rose up to depart, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said to him,

  96. Behold, now the day has waned toward evening.

  97. Please spend the night.

  98. And behold, the day draws to its close.

  99. Lodge here and let your heart be merry, and tomorrow you shall arise early in the morning for your journey and go home.

  100. But the man would not spend the night.

  101. He rose up and departed and arrived opposite Jabez, that is, Jerusalem.

  102. He had with him a couple of saddled donkeys, and his concubine was with him.

  103. And when they were near Jebus, the day was nearly over, and the servants said to his master,

  104. Come now, let us turn aside to the city of the Jebusites and spend the night in it.

  105. And his master said to him, We will not turn aside into the city of foreigners who do not belong to the people of Israel,

  106. but we will pass on to Gibeah.

  107. And he said to his young man, Come and let us draw near to one of the places and spend the night at Gibeah, or in Ramah.

  108. So they passed on and went their way, and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin.

  109. And they turned aside there to go in and spend the night at Gibeah.

  110. And he went in and sat down in the open square of the city, for no one took them into his house to spend the night.

  111. Verse 16.

  112. And behold, an old man was coming from his work in the field that evening.

  113. The man was from the hill country of Ephraim, and he was sojourning in Gibeah.

  114. The men of the place were Benjamites.

  115. And he lifted up his eyes and saw the traveler in the open square of the city.

  116. And the old man said, Where are you going, and where do you come from?

  117. And he said to him, We are passing from Bethlehem and Judah to the remote parts of the hill country of Ephraim, from which I come.

  118. And I went to Bethlehem and Judah, and I am going to the house of the Lord.

  119. But no one has taken me into his house.

  120. We have straw and feed for our donkeys, with bread and wine for me and your female servant, and the young man with your servants.

  121. There is no lack of anything.

  122. And the old man said, Peace be with you.

  123. I will care for all your wants.

  124. Only do not spend the night in the square.

  125. So he brought him into his house and gave the donkeys feed.

  126. And they washed their feet and ate and drank.

  127. As they were making their hearts merry, behold, men of the city, worthless fellows, surrounded the house, beating on the door.

  128. And they said to the old man, the master of the house, Bring out the man who has come into your house, that we may know him.

  129. And the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them,

  130. No, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.

  131. Since this man has come into my house, do not do this vile thing.

  132. Behold, here is my virgin daughter and her concubine.

  133. Let me bring them out now.

  134. Violate them and do to them what seems good to you.

  135. But against this man, do not do this outrageous thing.

  136. But the men would not listen to him.

  137. So the man seized his concubine and made her go out to him.

  138. And they knew her and abused her all night until morning.

  139. And as the dawn began to break, they let her go.

  140. And as morning appeared, the woman came and fell down at the door of the man's house where her master was until it was light.

  141. And the man rose up in the morning.

  142. And when he opened the doors of the house and went out to go on his way, behold, there was his concubine lying at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold.

  143. He said to her, Get up.

  144. Let us be going.

  145. But there was no answer.

  146. Then he put her on the donkey and the man rose up and went away to his home.

  147. And when he entered his house, he took a knife and taking hold of his concubine, he divided her limb by limb into 12 pieces and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel.

  148. And all who saw it said, Such a thing has never happened or been seen from the day that the people of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt until this day.

  149. Consider it.

  150. Take counsel and speak.

  151. Take.

  152. As far as God's word.

  153. Let's pray.

  154. Lord in heaven, we come now to your word and we need you to give us strength and your spirit.

  155. Equip us now as we study it, that we would know you know your grace and love in Jesus.

  156. And we would hope and we would bring that hope to others.

  157. It's in Jesus name that we pray.

  158. Amen.

  159. Amen.

  160. Amen.

  161. So what has just happened in this passage?

  162. I'll recap it briefly.

  163. a man takes a sexual partner.

  164. He goes with her, and she eventually leaves him,

  165. spends five days to try and get her back,

  166. and as he starts for home, they stop at a town,

  167. and no one takes them in.

  168. An old man says ominously, don't spend the night here.

  169. At least come into my house.

  170. And a group of, as while he's in his home,

  171. a group of worthless fellows, the text says,

  172. comes demanding to essentially have the man sexually.

  173. And the man instead gives the concubine,

  174. and they proceed to effectively abuse her to death.

  175. And the original man takes her body

  176. and sends it throughout the country.

  177. And thus ends our passage.

  178. It's incredibly disturbing.

  179. It's incredibly unnerving.

  180. And we are left asking,

  181. what in the world do we do with a passage like this?

  182. What do we do with this?

  183. In fact, we read something like this,

  184. and we say, everything's wrong here.

  185. And in fact, we don't even know the half of everything that's wrong.

  186. We could spend a whole sermon discussing layers upon layers upon layers

  187. of things that have gone deeply wrong in this society.

  188. Things like a concubine.

  189. Things like a Levite.

  190. Things like having a woman like this.

  191. Things like sexual infidelity.

  192. Irresponsible parting.

  193. Inhospility to countrymen.

  194. Homosexual lust.

  195. Oppression of women.

  196. Gang rape.

  197. Human slaughter.

  198. We didn't even read the part where we get to civil war and genocide.

  199. It just spirals, and it's all woven together,

  200. and the whole scene is brutal and horrible.

  201. And we're left wondering, what do we make of this?

  202. What do we make of this?

  203. And actually, we're very used to thinking about,

  204. we're actually quite, we're used to thinking about things like this.

  205. There's a popular TV genre that most of us,

  206. at least, watch something like this,

  207. and these are these Vice shows that are very similar to this.

  208. I'm thinking of shows like Breaking Bad or Ozark or Yellowstone,

  209. and they put their character in a world that doesn't have restraints,

  210. where they are free to let their vices run wild.

  211. And they're basically asking, how bad can humanity get?

  212. How bad can this character deteriorate?

  213. How quickly can a vice destroy a society?

  214. And these shows are fascinating to us.

  215. It's kind of like when you drive past a car wreck.

  216. You say you just want everybody to pass it,

  217. but then as soon as you get to it, we're all looking at it too,

  218. the same way.

  219. We want to see, we know it's horrible, but we can't look away.

  220. And it's stories like this, it's shows like this,

  221. where they fix the camera on the philosophical

  222. and existential questions of the human nature.

  223. Don't flinch, don't look away,

  224. and force us to ask, what is humanity?

  225. What is wrong with our world?

  226. And that is a place that is ripe for sharing our faith.

  227. It is ripe for sharing our faith.

  228. This text asks, what is wrong with our world?

  229. And it shows us.

  230. It shows us what is deeply wrong with our world.

  231. Let me show you.

  232. There's a phrase that was repeated at the very beginning of chapter 19,

  233. but then it shows up several times throughout Judges.

  234. You see at the very beginning of chapter 19, verse 1,

  235. in those days there was no king in Israel.

  236. In those days there was no king in Israel.

  237. And it's actually repeated several times.

  238. In chapter 17, verse 6, it says,

  239. in those days there was no king in Israel.

  240. Then it adds another line.

  241. It says, and everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  242. Same thing in chapter 18.

  243. In those days there was no king in Israel.

  244. And then as a sort of inclusio to end this whole story,

  245. if we were to keep reading chapters 19 and 21,

  246. we read the continued deterioration that ends, like I said,

  247. in genocide and civil war.

  248. The very last words of the book of Judges are,

  249. in those days there was no king in Israel,

  250. and everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

  251. So three, four times the text repeats this refrain,

  252. and that repeated line is the interpretation.

  253. It explains what is going wrong.

  254. We're faced with this horrible, horrible situation

  255. that just is gut-wrenching.

  256. And the text tells us, what is wrong with this?

  257. There's no king and everyone does what is right in his own eyes.

  258. Judges tells us that what is wrong with our world,

  259. what is wrong in this situation,

  260. the oppression and the violence

  261. that we see percolating, spreading out

  262. throughout this story, throughout the human experience,

  263. is that there is no king,

  264. and everyone does what is right in his own eyes.

  265. And in this, it points us back

  266. to what we confessed in our confession of faith,

  267. which is, what is sin?

  268. Sin

  269. is a declaration

  270. of I would have no king

  271. but myself.

  272. I would do what is right

  273. in my own eyes.

  274. What did we confess?

  275. Sin

  276. is any

  277. transgression

  278. of the law

  279. of God.

  280. Anytime we look at God

  281. and say,

  282. you as king

  283. have no authority

  284. in my life,

  285. I will do

  286. and I will discern

  287. what is right

  288. for myself.

  289. I will be

  290. my own king.

  291. This is what we confess

  292. when we say,

  293. what is sin?

  294. It is the want of conformity unto

  295. and transgression

  296. of God's law.

  297. It is looking at God

  298. who is our creator

  299. and king

  300. and saying,

  301. not you,

  302. I will do

  303. what I would do.

  304. And this,

  305. the text says here,

  306. Judges 19,

  307. Judges,

  308. the whole book says,

  309. the source

  310. of the violence

  311. and the abuse,

  312. that gut sucker punch

  313. that you feel

  314. when you read this text

  315. is the rejection

  316. of God

  317. and the claim

  318. of this individual autonomy.

  319. I will do

  320. what is right

  321. in my own eyes.

  322. And this leads

  323. to the pain

  324. that we feel

  325. as we read this story.

  326. There's a great

  327. theologian philosopher,

  328. a guy named Christopher Walken,

  329. he says this,

  330. when every man

  331. deciding for himself

  332. what is good and evil

  333. sets a high value

  334. on himself

  335. and demands

  336. that everyone else

  337. value him

  338. in the same way,

  339. then human beings

  340. are in a perpetual

  341. and unrelenting war

  342. with each other.

  343. Autonomy

  344. and the ethic

  345. of violence

  346. are a natural fit

  347. for one another.

  348. Autonomy

  349. and an ethic

  350. of violence

  351. are a natural fit

  352. for one another.

  353. And so Judges 19,

  354. this passage

  355. shows us

  356. that the problem

  357. for humanity

  358. is autonomy,

  359. rejection of God

  360. and his rule.

  361. The story

  362. of the Bible

  363. is exposing

  364. our hearts

  365. as deep

  366. rebels

  367. against God.

  368. And the conclusion,

  369. here's the conclusion,

  370. is that unrestrained

  371. sin,

  372. that is unrestrained

  373. autonomy,

  374. leads inevitably

  375. to total

  376. societal breakdown.

  377. Unrestrained

  378. sin leads

  379. to weak

  380. parts of our world

  381. being hurt.

  382. when autonomy,

  383. everyone doing

  384. what is right

  385. in his own eyes

  386. runs its course,

  387. then the most vulnerable

  388. get the most hurt.

  389. Now,

  390. how in the world

  391. does this begin

  392. to apply

  393. to sharing our faith?

  394. Let me show you.

  395. I've read this passage

  396. many times

  397. with non-Christians

  398. and they will say

  399. something like this,

  400. see,

  401. how can the Bible

  402. have this passage

  403. in it?

  404. How does the Bible,

  405. how can your God

  406. possibly let this happen?

  407. This is awful.

  408. Don't you see?

  409. This is what's wrong

  410. with religion.

  411. This is what's wrong.

  412. This is why we,

  413. this is why I'm not a Christian

  414. is because this is

  415. in the Bible.

  416. Today's passage

  417. is a lot of things

  418. but you can't look at this

  419. and accuse it

  420. of shying away

  421. from the darkest parts

  422. of the human experience.

  423. You cannot help

  424. but feel outrage

  425. and grief

  426. and anger

  427. at verse 28.

  428. Oh my gosh.

  429. going to her

  430. he said,

  431. get up

  432. and be going

  433. and there was

  434. no answer.

  435. That woman

  436. alone,

  437. abandoned,

  438. in utter

  439. soul torment

  440. dies

  441. and what we get

  442. to do

  443. is as we read

  444. this with our

  445. friends,

  446. we say

  447. that's exactly

  448. what the Bible

  449. wants you to feel

  450. in this situation.

  451. You get,

  452. we must,

  453. if you're here

  454. and you're searching

  455. and you feel

  456. indignation,

  457. how can this

  458. be in the Bible?

  459. The Bible

  460. would say

  461. exactly.

  462. That's the point.

  463. You are feeling

  464. what you should feel.

  465. You should be

  466. outraged

  467. by this.

  468. You should be

  469. furious

  470. by this.

  471. It challenges us

  472. because it says

  473. the outrage

  474. that you feel,

  475. the source of it

  476. is sin.

  477. Sin is the problem.

  478. And frankly,

  479. we live in the same

  480. world as Judges 19

  481. today.

  482. We have a fancier

  483. world for everyone

  484. doing what is right

  485. in their own eyes.

  486. A famous sociologist,

  487. a guy named Robert

  488. Bella,

  489. coined a term

  490. called expressive

  491. individualism,

  492. which is a fancy

  493. way of saying

  494. everyone does

  495. what is right

  496. in his own eyes.

  497. Which,

  498. it means

  499. that we live

  500. in a world

  501. where everyone

  502. has the individual

  503. right to express

  504. their own

  505. individuality,

  506. express their

  507. own feelings.

  508. And in fact,

  509. we are taught,

  510. trained,

  511. incentivized,

  512. catechized,

  513. to look within us,

  514. to be our most

  515. authentic self,

  516. and then to live

  517. that out on the

  518. world as a stage.

  519. And this starts

  520. from as young

  521. as childhood.

  522. Think about

  523. every single

  524. Disney movie.

  525. Every single

  526. Disney movie.

  527. I let my kids

  528. watch Disney,

  529. I grew up

  530. watching Disney,

  531. and this is

  532. what we hear.

  533. And it's

  534. unavoidable.

  535. Even if you don't

  536. let your kids

  537. watch Disney,

  538. it is in the air

  539. we breathe.

  540. But every single

  541. one is a sugar-coated

  542. Broadway version

  543. of everyone do

  544. what is right

  545. in your own eyes.

  546. Think about

  547. the movie Frozen.

  548. What does Elsa

  549. sing in Let It Go?

  550. It is an expression.

  551. It is a song

  552. of self-expression.

  553. Listen,

  554. she says,

  555. the fears that

  556. once controlled me

  557. can't get to me

  558. at all.

  559. It's time to see

  560. what I can do

  561. to test the limits

  562. and break through.

  563. No right,

  564. no wrong,

  565. no rules for me.

  566. I'm free.

  567. Let it go.

  568. Let it go.

  569. This is the

  570. guiding vision

  571. of the sexual

  572. revolution

  573. from 1968

  574. to now.

  575. This is how

  576. we are trained

  577. to think about

  578. our money

  579. in our economics.

  580. This is the vision

  581. of capitalism.

  582. No one can tell me

  583. how to spend my money.

  584. I get to choose

  585. what I do with it.

  586. And we've created

  587. a whole online

  588. internet market system

  589. that will have

  590. your products

  591. to let you

  592. curate your own life

  593. within eight hours

  594. or less.

  595. You can have

  596. any product

  597. you want

  598. at your front door.

  599. This is how

  600. we treat our politics.

  601. Michael Sandel,

  602. who's a preeminent

  603. political philosopher,

  604. says that liberalism,

  605. liberalism is the

  606. political philosophy

  607. that undergirds

  608. how we,

  609. the American

  610. political experience,

  611. the vision of democracy,

  612. says this,

  613. liberalism is a

  614. plurality of persons,

  615. each with his own

  616. interests, aims,

  617. and conceptions

  618. of the good.

  619. Liberalism and

  620. democracy

  621. maximize the

  622. political,

  623. social,

  624. and economic

  625. rights of the

  626. individual

  627. to live their

  628. lives as they

  629. choose.

  630. In our world

  631. today,

  632. we have perfected

  633. the art

  634. of everyone

  635. does what is

  636. right in their

  637. own eyes.

  638. Robert Bella

  639. says it this way,

  640. in the absence

  641. of any objective

  642. criteria of right

  643. or wrong,

  644. good or evil,

  645. the self

  646. and its feelings

  647. become its own

  648. moral guide.

  649. and there

  650. each individual

  651. is entitled

  652. to his or

  653. her own

  654. bit of space

  655. and is utterly

  656. free with its

  657. boundaries.

  658. This is the world

  659. we live in.

  660. It's unavoidable.

  661. And here's the

  662. trick.

  663. It's killing us.

  664. And everyone

  665. knows it.

  666. This is why I say

  667. we have more

  668. opportunities to

  669. share the gospel

  670. than we have in

  671. 80 years.

  672. Everyone looks

  673. around us right

  674. now and says,

  675. whatever we're

  676. doing right now

  677. ain't working.

  678. This ain't it.

  679. If this is what

  680. living life is,

  681. I don't want to

  682. be a part of it.

  683. If this is what

  684. society does,

  685. I don't want a

  686. piece of it.

  687. It's killing us.

  688. And like this

  689. story,

  690. it's particularly

  691. hurting the

  692. weakest members

  693. of our world,

  694. the poor,

  695. women with

  696. weaker bodies.

  697. people with

  698. dark skin.

  699. It hurts them

  700. most.

  701. Many of you

  702. know,

  703. I was just

  704. sitting in on

  705. Scott Sage's

  706. AI class.

  707. Many of you

  708. know there's

  709. an AI tool

  710. called Grok.

  711. It's Twitter

  712. and X's

  713. AR platform.

  714. It's a powerful

  715. tool.

  716. Last week I was

  717. reading a story

  718. about how it is

  719. being used by

  720. men to deep

  721. fake women.

  722. And so it can

  723. take a single

  724. picture of a

  725. woman,

  726. any woman,

  727. and you can

  728. essentially turn

  729. any picture into

  730. pornography.

  731. And there's

  732. nothing that we

  733. can do about

  734. it.

  735. Women are

  736. scrolling the

  737. internet and

  738. they will find a

  739. picture of

  740. themselves that

  741. has been deep

  742. faked into a

  743. sexually explicit

  744. image.

  745. And they will

  746. call the police

  747. and say,

  748. what will you

  749. do about this?

  750. And they'll say,

  751. there's nothing

  752. we can do.

  753. Why?

  754. Because we live

  755. in a land where

  756. the First Amendment,

  757. I'm pro-First

  758. Amendment, but this

  759. is free speech and

  760. there's nothing we

  761. can do.

  762. there is no

  763. king in the

  764. land and everyone

  765. does what is right

  766. in their own

  767. eyes and the

  768. most vulnerable

  769. are hurt the

  770. most.

  771. And here's what's

  772. true, our

  773. non-Christian

  774. friends know that

  775. something is

  776. desperately wrong.

  777. They know it,

  778. but they can't

  779. explain why.

  780. And we read

  781. Judges 19 to

  782. them and we

  783. let it sink in

  784. and we let them

  785. feel outrage.

  786. We let them feel

  787. how terrible it

  788. is and we say,

  789. do you not see

  790. this is the world

  791. we live in?

  792. And they say,

  793. yes, I see it

  794. and I hate it.

  795. And we get to

  796. say, you know

  797. what the reason

  798. is?

  799. It's because of

  800. sin.

  801. It's because we

  802. live in a world

  803. where everyone

  804. does what is

  805. right in their

  806. own eyes and

  807. you know it's

  808. killing us.

  809. I know it's

  810. killing us.

  811. Don't you see

  812. that listening to

  813. your heart leads

  814. to oppression and

  815. abuse and

  816. injustice?

  817. this is where

  818. we can reason

  819. with our friends

  820. and say,

  821. would you agree

  822. that our world

  823. tells us to

  824. listen to our

  825. hearts, to

  826. express our

  827. individuality, to

  828. use our freedoms

  829. to make our own

  830. name great, to

  831. buy what we want

  832. when we want, to

  833. vote in a way

  834. that makes my

  835. life better?

  836. Well, yes, I

  837. would say that's

  838. the way we live.

  839. That's the world,

  840. that's a good

  841. world to live in.

  842. But don't you

  843. see that if

  844. everyone does this

  845. wholesale, the

  846. result is

  847. oppression.

  848. Pain, abuse,

  849. Judges 19, it's

  850. unavoidable.

  851. This is what we

  852. live in.

  853. And here's why

  854. this passage, here's

  855. why stories like

  856. this are so

  857. amazing.

  858. People will read

  859. this and say,

  860. this is in the

  861. Bible, this is

  862. outrageous, how

  863. can this be?

  864. And the Bible

  865. says exactly.

  866. It shocks us, it

  867. offends us, it

  868. shows us how

  869. threatening human

  870. nature is separated

  871. from God.

  872. And we can

  873. slingshot off of

  874. this and say we

  875. need someone to

  876. save us.

  877. you know that.

  878. Let me show you

  879. who he is.

  880. Back to our

  881. story.

  882. It gets worse.

  883. I wish I could

  884. say it gets

  885. better.

  886. I won't read the

  887. rest.

  888. You can go read

  889. it on your own.

  890. The Levite

  891. retrieves his

  892. concubine.

  893. He's not willing

  894. to intercede on

  895. his own, but he

  896. sends her body

  897. throughout the land

  898. and shows what

  899. has been done to

  900. her.

  901. And to us, this

  902. feels extremely

  903. hyperreactive.

  904. At the time, it

  905. was a version of

  906. basically photo

  907. journalism.

  908. Photojournalists

  909. would go to the

  910. Vietnam War, take

  911. pictures of what

  912. was happening, and

  913. send them back.

  914. This is photo

  915. journalism at its

  916. most graphic.

  917. And it incenses the

  918. nation.

  919. You read in

  920. chapter 20, at the

  921. end of the 20,

  922. everyone says,

  923. nothing like this

  924. has ever been done

  925. before.

  926. What are we going

  927. to do about it?

  928. So the rest of the

  929. Israelite nation

  930. gathers a giant

  931. army, 400,000

  932. soldiers, and goes

  933. and attacks the

  934. Benjamites.

  935. And there is a

  936. multi-day civil war

  937. between all the

  938. 11 tribes against

  939. the Benjamites.

  940. And eventually, the

  941. Benjamites are

  942. utterly obliterated.

  943. All the men are

  944. killed.

  945. And effectively, a

  946. tribe is almost

  947. wiped out.

  948. And the passage

  949. ends with

  950. essentially stealing

  951. more women to

  952. give to the

  953. Benjamites who are

  954. almost gone so

  955. that they can still

  956. be around.

  957. And so the passage

  958. ends, even worse,

  959. civil war and

  960. genocide, killing

  961. an entire people

  962. group.

  963. And it ends

  964. saying, there was

  965. no king in the

  966. land and everyone

  967. does what is right

  968. in his own eyes.

  969. And the human

  970. predicament apart

  971. from God is cold,

  972. nasty, brutish, and

  973. short.

  974. So what do we do

  975. with this?

  976. What do we do

  977. with this?

  978. Well, there's a few

  979. things.

  980. First, we have to

  981. acknowledge that God

  982. cares deeply about

  983. this story.

  984. God cares deeply

  985. about it.

  986. He does not approve

  987. of this evil.

  988. God is strikingly

  989. quiet in this whole

  990. story.

  991. You don't see any

  992. place where God is

  993. approving or

  994. condoning of any

  995. of this.

  996. The only time he

  997. speaks is he just

  998. sort of lets them

  999. go and have this

  1000. civil war.

  1001. But nowhere does

  1002. God approve of

  1003. this violence or

  1004. abuse.

  1005. And in fact, if

  1006. that's part of your

  1007. story, which

  1008. statistically it is

  1009. in this room, hear

  1010. me say that

  1011. whatever has

  1012. happened to you,

  1013. God is as upset

  1014. with it as anyone.

  1015. And he cares

  1016. deeply for you.

  1017. And the good news

  1018. of the gospel is

  1019. that he has, is,

  1020. and will do

  1021. something about

  1022. that pain.

  1023. And we will

  1024. look at that

  1025. in a minute.

  1026. The God of the

  1027. Bible hates

  1028. injustice.

  1029. He hates

  1030. abuse.

  1031. Listen to what

  1032. Deuteronomy says.

  1033. In Deuteronomy 16,

  1034. God tells his

  1035. people, justice

  1036. and justice only

  1037. you shall, you

  1038. shall follow.

  1039. In the Psalms,

  1040. it's all over how

  1041. he cares about

  1042. justice.

  1043. And then it

  1044. tells us that God

  1045. is going to do

  1046. something.

  1047. The next book

  1048. in the Jewish

  1049. Bible, the next

  1050. words in the

  1051. Jewish Bible

  1052. after 2125 is

  1053. 1 Samuel.

  1054. And 1 Samuel is

  1055. the story of God

  1056. beginning to

  1057. provide what?

  1058. A king.

  1059. Someone who

  1060. will come to

  1061. bring the

  1062. justice, the

  1063. vindication that

  1064. this story needs

  1065. so badly.

  1066. And it is not

  1067. just any king,

  1068. but it is the

  1069. king par

  1070. excellence.

  1071. David, the

  1072. king that Psalm

  1073. 89 says,

  1074. righteousness and

  1075. justice are the

  1076. foundation of your

  1077. throne.

  1078. The low point of

  1079. Judges 19 rises

  1080. to a climax of

  1081. the best king in

  1082. Israel's history

  1083. where there's a

  1084. time of peace and

  1085. thriving and

  1086. justice.

  1087. But we know that

  1088. that's not even

  1089. enough because even

  1090. David would what?

  1091. Abuse a woman.

  1092. We need a better

  1093. king than even

  1094. King David.

  1095. David.

  1096. And Psalm 110

  1097. points to him and

  1098. says that there is

  1099. a son of David,

  1100. one who will come

  1101. as king, who will

  1102. be perfectly

  1103. righteous and bring

  1104. perfect justice

  1105. forever.

  1106. And later on in

  1107. Matthew 22, what

  1108. does Jesus say?

  1109. He says, Psalm 110,

  1110. David's great son,

  1111. the king that David

  1112. was supposed to be,

  1113. it's me.

  1114. I'm him, Jesus

  1115. says.

  1116. And Jesus says,

  1117. the time is at

  1118. hand.

  1119. The kingdom of

  1120. God is now at

  1121. hand.

  1122. Jesus comes and

  1123. says, everything

  1124. that was wrong in

  1125. Judges 19, this

  1126. king that you

  1127. needed, I am he.

1128. I am the one who

  1129. will come and bring

  1130. justice.

  1131. The time that we

  1132. long for a king

  1133. where justice and

  1134. righteousness would

  1135. be integrated into

  1136. the very fabric of

  1137. our society, of our

  1138. world, Jesus says,

1139. I will come and do

  1140. that.

  1141. And here's what's

  1142. amazing.

  1143. Jesus is the

  1144. antidote to the

  1145. sin problem.

  1146. How?

  1147. Jesus never did

  1148. what was right in

  1149. his own eyes.

  1150. He was sinless.

  1151. John tells us that

  1152. his only desire was

1153. to do the will of

  1154. his father.

  1155. And yet, even

  1156. though he never

  1157. did what was right

  1158. in his own eyes,

  1159. what happens to

  1160. him, he suffers

  1161. the abuse of a

  1162. violent mob outside

  1163. the city.

  1164. What happens to the

  1165. concubine happens

  1166. to Jesus, brutally

  1167. murdered by a rage

  1168. filled crowd outside

  1169. of the city.

  1170. Jesus is the

  1171. sinless king who

  1172. would suffer the

  1173. abuse, the

  1174. violation, the

  1175. death at the

  1176. hands of an

  1177. abusive crowd.

  1178. How?

  1179. Why?

  1180. So that he could

  1181. crush abuse

  1182. forever.

  1183. Psalm, I mean,

  1184. Isaiah 9, we

  1185. read this for

  1186. Christmas.

  1187. Of the increase of

  1188. his government,

  1189. king, and peace,

  1190. there will be no

  1191. end.

  1192. And on the throne

  1193. of David and

  1194. over his kingdom

  1195. to establish it

  1196. and uphold it

  1197. with justice and

  1198. righteousness from

  1199. this time forth and

  1200. forevermore.

  1201. David's son, the

  1202. king, will bring

  1203. true justice, true

  1204. peace to a violent

  1205. and abusive world.

  1206. Judges tells us

  1207. that we are not

  1208. okay, that we need

  1209. help, that our

  1210. world is broken, and

  1211. God sees it, he

  1212. knows, and he will

  1213. do something about

  1214. it.

1215. And this is what we

  1216. get to tell our

  1217. friends.

  1218. We make them want

  1219. it so badly, and

  1220. then we say, and

1221. he has come to do

  1222. it.

  1223. There's three moves

  1224. as we share our

  1225. friends, share this

  1226. with our friends.

  1227. We agree with our

  1228. non-Christian friends

  1229. that the world is

  1230. broken.

  1231. Yes, I agree with

  1232. you.

  1233. Our world is deeply

  1234. broken.

  1235. You know it, I

  1236. know it.

1237. And then we show a

  1238. better diagnosis of

  1239. the problem.

1240. What do you think is

  1241. the problem?

  1242. And it doesn't go

  1243. deep enough.

1244. Let me tell you what

  1245. the deepest problem

  1246. is.

  1247. Everyone does what

  1248. is right in their

  1249. own eyes.

  1250. It's sin.

  1251. But I have a

  1252. better solution.

  1253. It's the coming

  1254. king.

  1255. It's the gospel.

  1256. It's the king who

  1257. has come and who

  1258. will come again to

  1259. right every wrong.

  1260. Jesus is the king

  1261. who will bring

  1262. perfect justice.

  1263. Will you follow him

  1264. with me?

  1265. Jesus is the king

  1266. who suffered the

  1267. abuse to crush

  1268. abuse forever.

  1269. Will you follow him

  1270. with me?

  1271. Jesus suffered in

  1272. our place.

  1273. Never did what was

  1274. right in his own

  1275. eyes to fix a

  1276. broken world.

  1277. Will you follow

  1278. him with me?

  1279. This is what

  1280. evangelism is.

  1281. Slingshotting off

  1282. the pain of a

  1283. broken world and

  1284. showing them the

  1285. best and only

  1286. solution.

  1287. I'll close with

  1288. this.

  1289. Kurt Vonnegut

  1290. wrote a book

  1291. called Slaughterhouse

  1292. Five which is a

  1293. story processing

  1294. the trauma of

  1295. World War II.

  1296. It's particularly

  1297. the firebombing

  1298. of Dresden which

  1299. he describes in

  1300. the book.

  1301. He talks about a

  1302. man named Billy

  1303. Pilgrim who

  1304. becomes unstuck

  1305. in time and

  1306. can travel backwards

  1307. in time and he

  1308. sees life backwards

  1309. and he pictures

  1310. the firebombing of

  1311. Dresden backwards.

  1312. This is what he

  1313. says.

  1314. Seen backwards by

  1315. Billy the story

  1316. went like this.

  1317. American planes

  1318. full of holes and

  1319. wounded men and

  1320. corpses took off

  1321. backwards from an

  1322. airfield in

  1323. England.

  1324. Over France a few

  1325. German fighter planes

  1326. flew at them

  1327. backwards and

  1328. sucked bullets and

  1329. shell fragments from

  1330. some of the planes

  1331. and crewmen.

  1332. They did the same

  1333. for wrecked American

  1334. bombers on the

  1335. ground and those

  1336. planes flew home

  1337. backwards to join

  1338. the formation.

  1339. The formation flew

  1340. backwards over a

  1341. German city that

  1342. was on flames.

  1343. The bombers opened

  1344. their bomb bay

  1345. doors and exerted a

  1346. miraculous magnetism

  1347. which shrunk the

  1348. fires and gathered

  1349. them into cylindrical

  1350. steel tubes and

  1351. lifted these tubes

  1352. into the bellies of

  1353. the planes.

  1354. The containers were

  1355. stored neatly in

  1356. racks.

  1357. The Germans below

  1358. had miraculous

  1359. devices on their

  1360. own which were

  1361. long steel tubes.

  1362. They used them to

  1363. suck fragments from

  1364. the crewmen in the

  1365. planes.

  1366. But there were still

  1367. wounded Americans

  1368. though and some of

  1369. the bombers were in

  1370. bad repair.

  1371. Over France though

  1372. the German fighters

  1373. came up again and

  1374. made everything and

  1375. everybody as good as

  1376. new.

  1377. When the bombers got

  1378. back to base the

  1379. steel syndicals were

  1380. taken from their

  1381. racks and shipped

  1382. back to the United

  1383. States of America

  1384. where factories were

  1385. operating day and

  1386. night dismantling the

  1387. tubes and separating

  1388. the dangerous

  1389. components into

  1390. minerals.

  1391. Touchingly it was

  1392. mainly women who did

  1393. this work.

  1394. The minerals were

  1395. then shipped to

  1396. specialists in remote

  1397. areas.

  1398. It was their business

1399. to put them deep in

  1400. the ground to hide

  1401. them cleverly so that

  1402. they could never hurt

  1403. anyone again.

  1404. The American pilots

  1405. turned in their

  1406. uniforms and became

  1407. high school kids and

  1408. Hitler was turned into

  1409. a baby Billy Pilgrim

  1410. supposed.

  1411. Billy Pilgrim saw that

  1412. everybody turned into a

  1413. baby and all humanity

  1414. without exception

  1415. conspired biologically to

  1416. produce two perfect

  1417. innocent people named

  1418. Adam and Eve he

  1419. supposed.

  1420. that's what our faith

  1421. promises.

1422. To suck all of the

  1423. pain out of our

  1424. world.

  1425. All of the abuse.

1426. The hell that is a

  1427. firebombing of a city

1428. and to bury it deep in

  1429. the ground.

1430. That's what we offer to

  1431. our friends.

  1432. God sucking all the

1433. evil out of the world

  1434. through Jesus as bad

  1435. as it gets.

  1436. Judges 19 or firebombing

  1437. Jesus the king time

  1438. working backwards to

  1439. save us from ourselves.

1440. We offer that to our

  1441. friends.

1442. I offer that to you.

1443. And I say would you

  1444. follow Jesus with me?

1445. Would you pray with me?

  1446. Father in heaven thank

1447. you that you have are

1448. and will suck all the

1449. pain and the abuse and

1450. the evil out of this

  1451. world.

1452. And you are doing it

  1453. soon.

1454. We pray that you would

1455. come soon and finish the

  1456. job.

  1457. Until then give us

  1458. grace.

  1459. Give us patience.

  1460. Give us endurance to

1461. await the day when the

  1462. kingdom finally comes.

1463. Give us the ability to

  1464. share this good news

  1465. faithfully and patiently

1466. with our friends and be

  1467. glorified in it.

1468. It's in Jesus name we

  1469. pray.

  1470. Amen.
